Three Selfie-crazy Teenagers Crushed To Death By A Train

Posted: 02 May 2019 12:30 AM PDT

Three Selfie-crazy Teenagers Crushed To Death By A Train
Three teenagers were killed while taking selfies on a railway track in India, the country which researchers say has the worst record for selfie-related deaths.

A fourth youth managed to jump to safety before the accident in Panipat city in the northern state of Haryana, a police officer told AFP on Wednesday.

"The victims were busy taking selfies and when they saw a train approaching they jumped to a second track without realising another train was coming on that," M.S. Dabas told AFP.

"One of them saved his life as he jumped on the other side of the track."

The group had come to Panipat to attend a wedding. Two of those killed were 19 years old and the third was 18.

Experts warn that youngsters obsessed with social media are going to extreme lengths in order to post selfies seen as daring and risky.

A study last year by researchers from the All Indian Institute of Medical Sciences said 259 people across the world had died while taking selfies between 2011 and 2017.

The highest number of incidents and selfie deaths were reported in India followed by Russia, the United States, and Pakistan, the study said.

In 2017 three students were killed on a railway track in southern Karnataka state, while a man died in Odisha after an elephant wrapped its trunk around the man and crushed him to death as he tried to take a selfie with the animal.

Last year Railways Minister Piyush Goyal took to Twitter to warn people against risking their life for the sake of photographs.

For in you there is strength, Drawn by raw emotion,
Magnificent in all your humility, In all the changes you made in me,
Unknowingly, Separated by an influx of differences, Surrounded by infinite love, My peace of mind, The anomaly, The exception to the rule,

God fearing, African,
Black, Man This is Wilmer,

Cisco announces the new standard for Wi-Fi

Posted: 01 May 2019 07:14 AM PDT

Cisco Wi-Fi
Cisco has announced innovative solutions that help customers embrace a new age of wireless connectivity. Wi-Fi 6 (also known as 802.11ax), the new standard for Wi-Fi networks, is redefining what's possible for businesses — powering a new era of immersive wireless experiences and the connecting of billions of things.

Cisco is also extending the industry's most extensive campus networking portfolio by delivering a campus core switch purpose-built for cloud-scale networking. By coupling powerful automation and analytics software with a complete array of next-generation switches, access points, and controllers for the campus, Cisco enables the industry's only end-to-end, wireless-first architecture.

Built on the same fundamental wireless innovations as 5G, these new standards will reshape how businesses and consumers interact with the world. Beyond being significantly faster than the previous generation, Wi-Fi 6 delivers up to 400 per cent greater capacity and is more effective in high-density settings like large lecture halls, stadiums and conference rooms. Latency is vastly improved, allowing for near real-time use cases. Wi-Fi 6 is also easier on connected devices' batteries and provides an overall more predictable user experience.

Cisco is rolling out several products and partnerships so that businesses can deliver a genuinely unplugged and uninterrupted experience.

● Wi-Fi 6 Access Points: New access points across the Catalyst and Meraki portfolios go beyond providing the new Wi-Fi 6 standard. With custom, programmable chipsets and access to industry-leading analytics capabilities, Cisco's latest APs deliver a smarter and more secure wireless network. The new access points are also multilingual, with the ability to communicate with multiple IoT protocols, including BLE, Zigbee, and Thread.

● Core Switch for the Campus Network: Cisco raises the bar with the Catalyst 9600 core switch family, which will serve as the foundation central to any network's successful operation. To deliver the most secure and efficient wireless experience, organisations need a single networking fabric that brings wired and wireless together. Built as the next evolution of the Catalyst 6000 — the most successful networking product in the history of the internet — the Catalyst 9600 will be the bedrock for the next generation of intent-based business networks.

● New Developer Resources: Wi-Fi 6 and 5G represent an incredible opportunity for developers. To enable them to create the immersive experiences that these new levels of connectivity promise, Cisco DevNet is unveiling a new wireless developer centre. DevNet, Cisco's developer network, offers the learning labs, sandboxes and developer resources needed to create game-changing wireless applications. The Cisco Catalyst and Meraki access platforms are open and programmable all the way down to the chipset level, allowing applications to take advantage of network programmability in new and exciting ways.

● New Ecosystem Partnerships: Prior to the launch of its Wi-Fi 6 access points, Cisco completed interoperability testing with Broadcom, Intel and Samsung to address the inevitable gaps that come with a new standard. Samsung, Boingo, GlobalReach, Presidio and others are expected to join the Cisco OpenRoaming project to solve one of today's biggest wireless pain points. The Cisco OpenRoaming project aims to make it easier to seamlessly and securely hop between Wi-Fi and LTE networks and onboard public Wi-Fi.

"Every leap in connectivity enables the next wave of profound innovation. 5G and Wi-Fi 6 represent a new era of connectivity," said David Goeckeler, EVP and General Manager, Networking and Security Business at Cisco. "Developers are already creating the next generation of wireless-first, immersive experiences. With billions of things connecting to the network, this growth will create unprecedented complexity for IT. Cisco is building a multi-domain network architecture to simplify complexity for IT, allowing CIOs to deliver against their innovation agenda."

Wireless-first, cloud-driven, data-optimized

Wi-Fi 6 and 5G represent an enormous opportunity but require businesses to tackle big challenges. Today, the workplace is wherever we work. Users are more dependent on mobile experiences and have no tolerance for downtime. To meet these demands, the network must be:

Wireless-first: Today, mobile technologies are fueling economic growth — making it easier for workers to collaborate, shoppers to purchase, students to learn — from anywhere. To deliver a great wireless experience, IT needs to look beyond the Wi-Fi and solve for the full end-to-end experience — driving consistent security, reliability and performance.

Cloud-driven: The cloud enables unprecedented scale. Cisco uses the cloud to deliver new innovations faster. The cloud also helps IT move from reactive to proactive by taking global insights and delivering best practices to help address problems before they impact users.
Data-optimized: The network offers millions of data points, providing context on users, their experience, and their vulnerabilities. Using powerful analytics, we can unlock new solutions that optimize IT operations, support better business decisions, provide innovative security solutions and engage customers in more effective ways.
Over the past two years, Cisco has built out its intent-based networking portfolio to prepare customers for tomorrow's challenges. Cisco's new access points and campus switch are purpose-built for intent-based networking and represent the culmination of Cisco's efforts to reinvent its entire access portfolio.

Availability and Services

The Meraki and Catalyst Access Points and Catalyst 9600 are available to order today.

Cisco Customer Experience for wireless and switching accelerate deployment of next-gen intent-based networking solutions while reducing risk and disruption. Cisco Customer Experience's portfolio provides expert guidance, best practices and innovative tools so that customers can transition with greater ease and confidence. LG announces Q1 2019 financial results

Posted: 01 May 2019 07:09 AM PDT

LG Electronics has announced the consolidated sales of KRW 14.92 trillion (USD 13.27 billion) and operating profit of KRW 900.6 billion (USD 801.25 million) for the first quarter of 2019.

Although overall first-quarter revenues and operating income declined somewhat in 2019 versus 2018, the home appliance company reported record first-quarter sales and profits. Operating income was 1,090 percent higher than the fourth quarter of 2018, reflecting improved cost structures across major business units.

The LG Home Appliance & Air Solution Company generated first-quarter revenues of KRW 5.47 trillion (USD 4.86 billion) and operating profit of KRW 727.6 billion (USD 647.3 million), the highest quarterly revenue and operating income for the business unit in LG history. Sales were especially strong in Europe and Asia, contributing to growth of 11 per cent year-on-year and 26 per cent quarter-on-quarter on robust sales of premium and growth products especially in the domestic Korean market. The increase in operating profit of more than 30 per cent from the same period last year also can be attributed to the growing popularity of high-growth products such as Styler, clothes dryers, air purifiers and vacuum cleaners as well as effective cost reduction efforts.

The LG Home Entertainment Company reported first-quarter revenues of KRW 4.02 trillion (USD 3.58 billion) and operating profit of KRW 346.5 billion (USD 308.27 million), a decrease of 3 per cent from the same period the previous year due to seasonal weakness in demand and the lack of global sporting events. Operating income increased significantly from the previous quarter thanks to greater marketing efficiencies and improvement cost structure. The launch of new 2019 premium products including OLED TVs, NanoCell TVs and large-screen Ultra HD TVs is expected to generate additional sales opportunities in the second quarter.

The LG Mobile Communications Company saw first-quarter sales of KRW 1.51 trillion (USD 1.34 billion) and narrowed its quarterly operating loss to KRW 203.5 billion (USD 181.05 million) as LG continues to rebuild its smartphone business. Operating results improved from the previous quarter as a result of stronger business structure. Looking ahead, the launch of LG V50ThinQ 5G smartphone is expected to create positive momentum in the second quarter while the relocation of LG's smartphone manufacturing centre from Pyeongtaek, Korea to Haiphong, Vietnam will help improve profitability and LG's global competitiveness in the second half of the year.

The LG Vehicle Component Solutions Company recorded first-quarter revenues of KRW 1.35 trillion (USD 1.20 billion), a 61 per cent increase from the same period last year. Increased sales at ZKW contributed to an improvement in operating results despite rising raw material prices and initial production costs associated with new projects. Trends in the global auto market associated with low fuel prices and increased sales of luxury vehicles and SUVs will create more opportunities for LG's automotive components business.

The LG Business Solutions Company posted first-quarter sales of KRW 626.6 billion (USD 556.58 million), 5 per cent higher than the previous quarter and 3 per cent lower than the first quarter a year ago. Operating profit of KRW 55.5 billion (USD 49.38 million) was 272 per cent higher than the previous quarter but 3 per cent lower year-on-year due to the impact of U.S. tariffs on solar module imports and ongoing significant price erosion in major markets. The information displays business plans to improve profitability by expanding sales of premium displays and LED products.

2019 1Q Exchange Rates Explained

LG Electronics' unaudited quarterly earnings results are based on IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards) for the three-month period ending March 31, 2019. Amounts in Korean won (KRW) are translated into U.S. dollars (USD) at the average rate of the three-month period of the corresponding quarter — KRW 1,124 per USD.

Wife of Senate President, Toyin Saraki, calls for substance abuse advocacy

Posted: 01 May 2019 06:51 AM PDT

Toyin Saraki
Health care philanthropist and wife of Nigeria's Senate President, Mrs Toyin Saraki, has called for more advocacy around substance abuse and support for mental health practitioners.

She made the call in Lagos at the second run of 'High,' a contemporary stage play, which tackles issues surrounding drug and prescription medication abuse in Nigeria.

According to the Public Relations agency that made the statement available to newsmen on Wednesday, Mrs Saraki thanked the cast and crew – including the show's director, Keke Hammond – for choosing to tell what she called an important story that highlighted what was a growing social problem.

"As a parent, I cannot begin to imagine what it's like to be dealing with a child with a drug problem and I want to thank you for this. You have shown it to us in such a reality and I think this story should be shown around schools in Nigeria.

"I think that the first step to getting things right is shining a light on this issue and I will do what I can because the more we talk, the closer we will get to the solution," Saraki was quoted as saying in the statement.

She charged parents to look out for lifestyle changes in their children, wards and dependants, which might hint at a substance abuse problem – a theme which flowed through the play.

"I think that every parent should watch this play because just from watching it, I could see that it's actually very subtle changes. It's not something that jumps out and shows you that this person is on drugs or not on drugs," she said.

In his remarks, Mazen Mroue, Chief Operating Officer, MTN Nigeria, said that everyone had a role to play in ensuring that we build healthy thriving communities.

"I think the story touches every one of us. We are fathers, and we have brothers, sisters and children and as the play reflects, substance abuse does not differentiate between classes, ages and all the differences that we have.

"At MTN, we believe everyone deserves the benefit of the modern connected life.

"Through the MTN Foundation, which is responsible for our corporate social investments, we believe that everyone deserves the benefit of a healthy life, and that is why we are here and are part of supporting this show," he said.

He said that 'High', supported by MTN Nigeria, through the MTN Foundation, tells the story of a group of childhood teenage friends on holiday from boarding schools whose lives, as well as the lives of their parents and families, get dramatically upturned when one of them suffers a drug overdose.

He added that substance abuse remain a significant problem in Nigeria. In 2018, the BBC reported that about 3 million codeine-containing cough preparations are consumed daily in Kano and about 6 million bottles in the Northwest alone.

He said that as part of efforts aimed at addressing a growing national problem, the MTN Foundation, in collaboration with a consortium of professional and public policy stakeholders launched an initiative called 'ASAP' – the Anti Substance Abuse Programme – in December 2018."ASAP aims at increasing public awareness of substance abuse and addiction among youths, discouraging first-time usage and casual substance abuse nationwide, and providing access to resources for people in need of professional help," he said.

Over 60,000 driver’s licences yet to be collected in Lagos – FRSC

Posted: 01 May 2019 06:46 AM PDT

The Lagos State Sector Command of e Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says over 60,000 driver's licence are yet to be collected by applicants.

The Sector Commander of FRSC, Mr Hyginus Omeje, made the disclosure in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Wednesday.

According to Omeje, this implies that over 60,000 drivers are driving without a driver's licence in the state.

"Driver's licence is the only document that qualifies you to be on the road, every other valid document is for your vehicles.

" Many drivers claim that the reason for not having the driver's licence is that they were yet to get text messages to come and collect.

"Don't wait until you receive text messages; l use this opportunity to appeal that applicants of driver's licence should go to where they did their capturing and collect.

" We have over 60,000 driver's licence waiting to be collected all over Lagos State," the commander said.
Omeje noted that 60 days was the duration given at the point of capture for the document to be ready but added that within the period, the licence could be period.

"In most cases, we are meeting up with 30 days now after capturing.

"The problem now is collection, people feel free to drive with temporary licence while they continue to give excuse that they have not received text messages for the original licence.

"Let applicants feel free to go and collect their driver's licence at the various centers at no cost. Let them only go with their temporary one and they will be given a valid one.

"Good thing now, we have driver's licence valid for three and five years," he said.

Omeje cautioned driver's licence applicants to desist from patronising touts but to go to designated centres to avoid getting fake licence.

Oshiomhole, who is the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress(APC) had kept mute on the alleged rift.

’NASS lacks power to probe alleged crimes’

Posted: 01 May 2019 06:37 AM PDT

National Assembly
Chairman, Senate Committee on Navy on Wednesday accused Senator Ovie Omo-Agege(Delta Central) of abusing the judicial process and the generosity of the leadership of the Senate.

Misau claimed that some of Omo-Agege's actions were aimed at bringing down the institution of the Senate to which he belongs.

The Bauchi Central Senator stated this in reaction to the court injunction which Omo-Agege obtained on Tuesday from a High Court in Bwari-Abuja, restraining the leadership of the Senate and House of Representatives from considering the report of an ad hoc committee set up by both chambers to investigate the invasion of the Senate Chamber by some hoodlums who carted away the mace the symbol of authority of the parliament.

Misau, in a statement released in Abuja, noted that Omo-Agege's suit is frivolous.

He said: "The court cannot stop the legislature from the performance of its constitutional duties. Some hoodlums attacked the Senate chamber on live television during plenary and inflicted injury on workers on April 18, 2018.

"The leadership set up an ad-hoc committee to investigate what happened and recommend measures to prevent a recurrence and months after the committee had submitted its report, a Senator rushed to court when he heard that there was a push for the report to be considered before the life of the present Senate expires. He wants to prevent the report of the committee from being considered.

"In fact, his action has shown the reason why the Senate should actually go ahead and consider the report and act on it, no matter the odds.

"Omo-Agege has dared the Senate. Now, he should face the music. I blame the Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki for delaying on the consideration of the report.

"The Eighth Senate is winding down and the general view of members is that before we leave, all outstanding reports should be considered and acted upon.

"If Omo-Agege does not have any hidden agenda, why is he seeking to stop the consideration of the report, after all, he was given fair hearing to state his own case before the panel?

"He is probably running helter-skelter now because he wants to become Deputy Senate President and he knows that if we adopt the recommendation of the committee, the outcome will affect his ambition. This is the reason why people should always consider the future implications of their actions."

He, however, implored the Senate leadership to move swiftly to vacate the injunction granted to Omo-Agege by the Bwari court and ensure nothing stops the Senate from getting to the roots of that invasion by hoodlums.

Omo-Agege, in a swift response to Misau's statement, described it as completely misplaced.

For him, the statement is akin to "the hand of Esau and the voice of Jacob."

He noted it is elementary to know that nowhere in the constitution is the National Assembly and or its leadership granted the power to investigate crimes.

Omo-Agege said, "This is the hand of Esau and the voice of Jacob. It is cowardly for Saraki to have Senator Misau sign his (Saraki's) press release. Saraki needs to brush up on his knowledge of the constitution and the law.

"Nowhere in the Constitution is he granted the right to investigate crimes. He should be counselled that the ancillary powers derivable from section 88 of the 1999 constitution must be exercised in furtherance of lawmaking and not witch-hunting. Only the Nigeria police have the powers to investigate crimes.

"Omo-Agege has not dared the Senate and would never do so. He has instead dared Saraki to continue with his impunity and bigotry at his own peril.

"The Kwara electorate has had enough of Saraki's impunity and excesses and so do we.

"A terminal date has been fixed and in a while, the whole country will be breathing a sigh of relief."

Kogi poll: Odds against Bello

Posted: 01 May 2019 06:25 AM PDT

APC Party Members
Going by the results of the recent National Assembly elections in Kogi State, observers are apprehensive about the chances of Governor Yahaya Bello in the November election. The governor appears to be facing stiff opposition within and outside the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Rasaq Olaitan reports.

WINNING his second term mandate is not going to be an easy ride for Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State. There are enough reasons to suggest that Bello and the leadership of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) are heading for a collision, ahead of the governorship primary scheduled for August. The grounds for the clash are so fertile that the governor, unsure of his fate in the APC, is said to be shopping for an alternative party to realise his second term ambition.

The governor may have started making arrangements to seek for his re-election on the platform of the Accord Party (AP). He has denied this.

Bello's imminent face-off with the National Secretariat of the APC is not unconnected with a string of petitions  by individuals and groups against him. The petitioners are warning about the consequences of fielding Bello as the candidate, because his style of leadership has alienated him from  stakeholders within and outside the party. Some of the petitioners demanded that Bello should not be given a second term ticket.

Consequently, powerful forces in Abuja and in the top echelons of the APC are said to have moved against the governor. These include the APC National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole; Kogi-born National Women Leader Hajia Baiwa Salamotu; and the Abubakar Audu/James Faleke faction of the Kogi APC.

A source puts it this way: "The ticket has already been taken. There will not be a second term, because Bello's abysmal style of leadership has further subjected the state to political and economic hemorrhage and Abuja has been made to be aware of all of these and the consequences of handing the party's ticket to him."

Last week, a group, Kogi Rescue Mission (KRM), embarked on a peaceful protest to the national headquarters of the APC, with numerous placards stating the group's grievances. During the protest, the group, led by its President Ali Dan, described the Bello-led administration as a threat to welfare and the economic prosperity of the state.

In its protest letter to the party's national leadership, the group highlighted various anti-people activities of the administration, including suicidal deaths amongst the state civil servants whose salaries have not been paid for many months, misuse of state resources, hunger and perceived molestation of people perceived not to be supporters of the government.

The protest letter reads: "Salaries of civil servants for November and 60 per cent of December 2017 are yet to be paid, despite the fact that the government receiving N20 billion as bailout funds, N10b development reimbursement funds, over N21 billion  from the Paris Club refund and money from the monthly federal allocations, as well as internally generated revenue.

"As a result of the non-payment of salaries, a number of civil servants decided to take their own lives, because of their inability to meet up with their family needs, while over a hundred have died due to lack of funds to continue treatment."

Ali added: "Businesses have folded up, people are leaving for other states to seek refuge and workers have become paupers, feeding from hand to mouth. You will believe me that on no account will the people support and vote for a governor that operates draconian policy of this nature."

The KRM, who decried the dearth of public institutions in the state, also told APC national leadership that workers have been turned to internally displaced persons (IDPs) without recourse to dignity of labour, as enshrined in the labour acts.

His words: "Workers in Kogi State are now living like IDPs; Kogi State has become hunger/poverty capital of the country, as nothing seems to be working due to the sorry state of salaries.

"In Kogi State today, there are no public primary schools for the past two years, as they only exist in structures, without teachers to teach the pupils; due to non-payment of salaries. There are no primary health centres for the past two years; pensioners are not been paid for the past 12 months; there's no judiciary for the past eight months, due to non-payment of their salaries and no development anywhere in the state. Everything in Kogi State is in comatose and the people are despondent."

Ali appealed to the national leadership of the APC not to risk giving the ticket to Bello, adding that, with his appalling style of leadership, the ruling party has no electoral destiny in the state.

He said: "We are calling on President Muhammadu Buhari, the APC National Working Committee (NWC)  led by Comrade Adams Oshiomole and the National Leader, Sen. Bola Tinubu, not to risk the ticket of the APC for Yahaya Bello.

"If there is integrity in our party, the APC, that means Bello will not feature in the forthcoming Kogi State governorship election on the ticket of the APC. At the moment, Kogi State owes over N140 billion and the governor recently applied for another loan of N30 billion from the Central Bank of Nigeria, which will make the debt profile of the state to rise to N170 billion.

"We are crying for the help of President Muhammadu Buhari and the NWC of the APC, led by Adams Oshiomhole and the National Leader, Bola Tinubu, to salvage Kogi State from this extreme slavery of the Yahaya Bello-led administration."

Amid claims and counter claims that Kogi State government owes its workers about 38 months' salaries, another group, the Network of Kogi State Associations, has written to the Accountant General of the Federation (AGF), seeking authentication of the sum of N309.75 billion accrued to the state in over three and half years.

The letter by its General Secretary, Mr. Atekojo Usman, urged the AGF to authenticate the inflow of funds to the administration from January 2016 till date. The group, an umbrella body to numerous socio-cultural and political groups, said the move was in the interest of the people.

Part of the letter reads: "As bona fide indigenes of Kogi State, we wish to request your good office to expeditiously and comprehensively authenticate financial releases to Kogi State government since Governor Yahaya Bello assumed office on January 27, 2016."

It said the state under Bello "obtained loans between May 2017 and January  2018, got Paris Club refunds in three tranches, got bailout refund from the Federal Government, as well as statutory allocation for the state and local governments."

Part of the plot to stop Bello from actualising his second term ambition, it was gathered, is the ongoing case instituted at an Abuja Federal High Court by the Haddy Ametuo-led Kogi State APC executives. The Ametuo-led party executive was allegedly removed from office by Bello with the backing of erstwhile National Chairman, Chief John Oyegun, and replaced with loyalists of the governor. The sacked executive committee is in court to demand for its reinstatement. If that happens, not only would Bello lose his grips on the party, he is certainly going to come up against a hostile executives and delegates during the forthcoming governorship primary.

It is not immediately certain who among those currently positioning themselves to take over from Bello in the APC has got the nod of the APC kingmakers. What is certain is that the plot against the governor thickened last week with the official declaration by former Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Jibrin Usman, to contest for the  APC platform. The decision by him to run on the APC platform came as a surprise to many who expected him to join the PDP. However, informed sources in the APC and those close to the retired naval chief indicate that the choice of party may be a part of the bigger plot to deny Bello the APC ticket.

A source close to the naval chief who does not want his name in print said: "This is not about Admiral Jibrin Usman. It is about the choice of Kogi people, especially the suffering masses. After due consultations, we are glad he has eventually bowed to pressure and accepted to run for governorship in the interest of the masses. He was wanted in the PDP and so also in the APC. Anyway, he has always been in the APC. We decided that the APC is the appropriate platform to actualise the mission to rescue Kogi from maladministration.

"Of course, Kogi State is very strategic and the APC at the centre will not want to lose such a strategic state to the opposition. We are confident that by the grace of Almighty God, with the level of consultations and the support of the APC apparatus right from the national, state, local government to the ward levels, Admiral Jibrin Usman will clinch the APC ticket in August and subsequently with the majority votes of the Kogi electorate, irrespective of party and ethnic considerations, he will emerge the governor-elect after the November 2 governorship election."

In separate statements at the weekend, two groups, the Forum of Ex-political Office Holders and the KRM, said they have endorsed Usman's aspiration to contest the November governorship election.

In a statement by its Secretary General, Suleiman Adaji, the Forum of Ex-political Office Holders, said the former political office holders who served under former Governor Idris Wada between 2012 and 2016 are excited about the governorship ambition of Admiral Jibrin Usman. He disclosed that if Usman wins the election, members of the forum have been assured of the payment of their outstanding four month's salary arrears, which the administration of Governor Bello has refused to pay.

The KRM coordinator, Comrade Ahmed Muazu, said Usman's decision to yield to pressure to run for the governorship was an answer to the prayers of the good people of Kogi State.

He said the support of the movement for the candidature of Jibril Usman dates back to 2017 and that it was "borne out of the deepest conviction of his capacity and capability to deliver the dividends of democracy to the people, as well as reposition the state for development."

The group, he stressed, "has observed with pleasure the giant contributions made by the naval boss during his service years to the development of the state". This, he added, "is a pointer that if given the opportunity he would do more for the state".

Muazu listed some of the contributions of the former military chief to the progress of Kogi State to include the establishment of a naval base in Banda, Lokoja and Idah and a naval secondary school at Okura among others. He added: "His great disposition to the safety and protection of our common treasury makes him a natural solution to the restoration of good governance in Kogi State come November 2019."

The Special Adviser to Bello on Social Media, Aliyu Abubakar Adeiza, has taken a swipe at critics of the administration. He said the the governor has performed well to deserve a second term in office. Adeiza said the allegations of non-performance against Bello and speculations that he would not get a second term ticket are "clearly ill-conceived, ill-motivated and borne out of mischief".

He dismissed the speculations as mere "rumours" peddled by "diaspora politicians". He said facts available show that the governor has done well in the areas of education, roads and health, given what he met on ground at the time of inauguration.

Adeiza said: "It was when Governor Yahaya Bello (GYB) came in that things started improving. If anyone says GYB has created confusion in the state, it is all propaganda. We will give GYB another four years. He would do more to strengthen some of these landmark achievements. The PDP and all those padding such rumours are no match for GYB in the coming election. The only threat is the threat to the peace in Kogi, because of their inordinate ambition and apparent readiness to cause havoc."

Anambra Tribunal fails to hold pre-hearing on petitions

Posted: 01 May 2019 06:14 AM PDT

Anambra State
The two pre-hearing sessions scheduled for Wednesday at the Anambra Election Tribunal have failed to hold due to inability of the panels to sit.
The petitions were between Rep Dozie Nwankwo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and Mr Valentine Ayika of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The other was between Rep. Obinna Chidoka of the PDP and Mr Ifeanyi Ibezi of APGA.

Nwankwo is challenging the victory of Ayika for Anaocha, Dunukofia and Njikoka Federal Constituency in Petition no. EPT/AN/HR/07/2019 while Chidoka is contesting the victory of Ibezi for Idemili North and Idemili South Federal Constituency in Petition no. EPT/AN/HR/26/ 2019.

Announcing the shelving of the sessions, Falilat Orire, Secretary the tribunal, said it was due to last minute changes in the allocation of cases to the panels.

Orire said the three panels that would hear petitions in the Anambra Election Petitions Tribunal had been constituted and were on ground.

She said the parties would be notified their scheduled dates when it was ready and apologised for the inconveniences caused by yet another postponement.

Ayika later told NAN that he had no misgivings over the postponement but wondered why the tribunal had not been able to sit on the matter for three times.
He said he was confident of the validity of his victory at the poll and expressed hope that justice would be delivered.

"This is about the third time that we came for this pre-hearing and this is about the third time it was rescheduled.

"But, no problem, I have confidence in the judiciary and I am confident that justice will be done," he said.

The Anambra Election Petitions Tribunal received 42 petitions, including eight senatorial, nine House of Representatives and 25 for the State House of Assembly.

Bauchi lawyers query timing of Bauchi Governor-Elect’s arraignment

Posted: 01 May 2019 06:06 AM PDT

Bala Mohammed
A group, Body of Bauchi Lawyers of Conscience (BOBOLAC), has faulted the failed arrangement of Bauchi Governor- Elect, Bala Mohammed by the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) on Monday before the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, High Court, Maitama in Abuja over alleged failure to declare his assets.

The group described the EFCC's action as a threat to democracy, alleging foul play in the timing of the arraignment which is a month before the Governor- Elect's inauguration on May 29.

Chief Convener of the group Shippi Rabo, in a statement, said: " Couldn't the arraignment be arranged and prepared in a more responsible way and at such a practically better time than a day when the Governor -Elect was already scheduled to attend to crucial matters like the Nigeria Governors Forum's organised induction for incoming Governors which held at the Presidential Villa,Abuja, a meeting with the Central Inauguration Committee handling plans for  his inauguration as Executive Governor of Bauchi come May 29th 2019? "

"The EFCC had over 10 months to file charges against the Governor-elect after Justice Talba withdrew from the case following his elevation to the Appeal court but they didn't.

"Why did it take EFCC nearly a whole year to have the case reassigned to a new court or Judge?

"To what extent has the EFCC made progress in prosecuting the case considering that the first arraignment took place almost two years ago?"

Shipi, who presented the position of the group, added that the latest action of the commission constituted an affront, assault and also represent a grave threat to the survival of democracy.

He therefore called on all Nigerians to rise in unison against the act saying: " If really the Prosecuting Counsel of the commission, Wahab Shittu would want us to believe that it has nothing to do with politics, then for obvious reasons and certainty justice of the matter, we should not be talking about arraigning Bauchi State Incoming Governor at this point in time"

Russia trains CAR defence forces

Posted: 01 May 2019 05:10 AM PDT

Central African Republic Military Forces
Russia, which played a crucial role in peace-building efforts in the Central African Republic (CAR), is strengthening the country's defence forces.

The initiative comes a year after Russia achieved a partial lifting of the arms embargo on the Central African country from the United Nations Security Council.

A batch of small arms and ammunition was subsequently sent to the CAR as well as five military and 170 civilian instructors from Russia, according to CAJ News.

Since then, they have been training members of the armed forces of the CAR (FACA).

Russian instructors have organized a training centre in the city of

Berengo, where defence forces of the CAR are trained in the handling of weapons, as well as methods of combat.

The facility is equipped with a fire complex with a multi-purpose shooting range.

Russian instructors cleared the area and created a tactical field, as well as a site for conducting comprehensive training with an observation tower, a combat point, a full profile trench and a target installation.

In addition to educational facilities in Berengo, there are household facilities.

It accommodates more than 300 cadets.

As of March, seven sets of cadets have been groomed at the training centre. Some 1 900 individuals have been trained, including 128 officers.

Among those trained are machine gunners, rifle experts, police officers, gendarmes.

President Faustin Touadera, the defense Minister Marie-Noëlle Koyara, and UN representatives have attended some important sessions of the training exercise.

Also, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree on sending 30 troops to the Central African Republic, which will be part of the UN peacekeeping mission in the Republic – MINUSCA.

CAR is emerging from years of civil conflict.

Ondo LCDAs Committee get 94 Memoranda

Posted: 01 May 2019 05:05 AM PDT

Ninety-four Memoranda have been submitted by communities across Ondo state that are demanding the creation of Local Government Council Development Areas, (LCDA's).

The Chairman of LCDAs creation committee, Prince Adelanke Odogiyon at a news conference said committee's members would reconvene next week Tuesday to review the memoranda.

According to the former President, Nigeria Bar Association(NBA), members would not only visit the proposed LCDA's but would also study each of the Memoranda to know if those Council areas would be viable if created.

Odogiyon, who said that there had been few reactions to the suggested LCDA's headquarters, pointed out that cross border LCDA's would not be tolerated.

He said the move to create LCDAs in the state was legal and constitutional, adding that it is part of Governor Oluwarotimi's promises during electioneering campaigns.

Odogiyon observed that any State that is interested in creation of LCDAs can do so because it can be substantiated legally, stressing that Supreme Court has ruled that creation of LCDAs is legitimate, while States lack power to create local government except the National Assembly.

He explained further that each member of the Committee had been given copies of the submitted memoranda to study, adding that they will reconvene next week Tuesday to review and analyze contents of the Memo.

The chairman also said that members of the Committee are not under any undue pressure from any quarter, saying they will follow the mandate given to them to a logical conclusion through diligent and due process.

He maintained that members of the Committee will soon visit all places where they received memoranda in order to have face to face interaction with the concerned people.

Odogiyon called for the cooperation of the people of the State, as the government is ready to do laudable programmes that will affect the state positively, where governance will be brought to the door steps of the masses.

The Secretary of the Committee, who also doubles as the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Dr. Deji Akinwalere, said the creation of the LCDAs would bring governance closer to the people.

Akinwalere said the development would be rapid in the state, stressing that decentralisation of governance and power is key to development.

The LCDAs Committee set up by Akeredolu on March 19, has three months to submit its report

Workers’ Day: Obaseki lauds Edo workers’ dedication, dexterity

Posted: 01 May 2019 05:01 AM PDT

Godwin Obaseki
Edo State Governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki has hailed the immense contribution of workers in the state to the development strides recorded in the last two and the half years of his administration, noting that their dedication, dexterity and focus in transforming the state deserves commendation.

He restated the state government's commitment to paying the new minimum wage of N30,000, noting that modalities are already in place to ratify the increase.

The governor said this in commemoration of Workers' Days, a celebration of labourers and the working class promoted by the International Labour Movement, marked every May 1. It is also known as May Day or Labour Day.

The governor said the state government was committed to the welfare of workers and has demonstrated it with the reforms and revamp of infrastructure to assure a better work environment, work-life balance and after service benefits.

According to him, "As we celebrate Workers' Day, we appreciate the dedication, dexterity and steadfastness of Edo workers in transforming the state. We reiterate our commitment to building a globally-competitive workforce and commit to sustaining revamp of the civil service.

"We will achieve this by remodelling the workplace, including the state secretariat; transitioning our workers to digital platforms for efficiency and sustaining health and pension reforms to serve them better."

He reiterated the state government's decision not to sack workers but to retrain them to be more efficient and abreast with the latest trends in their field of expertise, noting, "We have reached an advanced stage in the construction of a building for staff training and have secured partnership with international organisations on capacity building for workers, including the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR). This will help in building a globally-competitive workforce."

He added that the pension reforms have ensured that workers are migrated to the contributory pension scheme, which guarantees a better life during active service and in retirement.
