The Sounds of Nature Around the World

Nature Sound Map provides a wonderful way to explore the soundscape of the natural world. On the Nature Sound Map you will find placemarks containing recordings of nature. The recordings have been added to the project by professional sound recordists. Some of the recordings you will find feature the sounds of just one animal, the sounds of a jungle, sounds of a marsh, sounds of a storm, or sounds of oceans and rivers.

Applications for Education
In science courses the sound map offers a nice way for students to hear the sounds of animals that they're learning about in different regions of the world. In some cases the sound recordings combined with Street View imagery could give students a more complete picture of what it is like to be at ground level in a place.

Two Good Tools That Help Students Learn to Program Games

Code Maven and Game Maven are interactive programming tutorials from Crunchzilla. Code Maven and Game Maven use the same style as the popular Code Monster javascript programming tutorial. That style is to present a piece of code with instructions on one side of the screen while providing a visual of the outcome on the other side of the screen.

Code Maven offers 59 lessons for students to work through at their own pace to learn programming fundamentals. After completing the Code Maven tutorials students are ready to move on to Game Maven where they can work through 37 lessons in which they will create three simple online games.

Applications for Education
Code Maven and Game Maven are appropriate for middle school and high school students who would like to learn a bit of programming on their own. The tutorials provide students with instant feedback which could be helpful in holding students' attention to the tutorials. Students don't have to register to use the service and they can stop a lesson and come right back to it whenever they want to.

RWT Flip Book - Free Flip Book Creator for Kids

Read Write Think offers a lot of great tools to help you get your students interested in writing. One of those tools is the RWT Flip Book app. The RWT Flip Book app is available for iPad, for Android, and for use in your web browser (Chrome or Firefox is recommended).

RWT Flip Book lets students create books by typing or by drawing on the pages in their books. There is a variety of page templates that students can choose to use within their books. Some templates are text-only, some are drawing-only, and some are a mix of drawing and text templates. To use RWT Flip Book students simply open the app, enter their first names, then start creating their first pages.

Applications for Education
RWT Flip Book could be a good choice for use in elementary school classrooms. Students do not need to have email addresses in order to use the app and multiple students can use the same installation of the app. RWT Flip Book could be used by students to write fiction stories. You might also consider having your students use RWT Flip Book to write and organize their notes.

Zoho Notebook - Your Evernote and Google Keep Alternative

Zoho Notebook is the alternative to Evernote and Google Keep that I mentioned in last week's edition of Practical Ed Tech Live. Zoho Notebook is a free and advertising-free tool for taking notes in typed, drawn, and spoken form.

Zoho Notebook is available to use on Android, iOS, and Mac OS. There is a Zoho Notebook web clipper to use in Chrome, Safari, and Firefox. Everything that you save in Zoho Notebook will sync across all of the devices on which you use it. There is not a limit to the number of devices on which you can use Zoho Notebook.

One of the first things that you will notice about Zoho Notebook is its clean design. All of your notes can be organized into notebooks with customized covers. Your notes can be typed, drawn, or spoken. The first minute of spoken notes is automatically transcribed to make them easier to later search for in your notebooks. Pictures and task lists can also be added to your notebooks.

Zoho Notebook's web clipper is the tool to use to save links in your notebooks. The web clipper lets you save links, take screenshots, and write notes. There is also a "clean view" option in the Zoho Notebook web clipper that removes sidebar content from articles that you find and read on the web.

Applications for Education
Zoho Notebook could be a great tool for students who have been frustrated by the limitations on Evernote's free plans. It's also a good option for students who want a bit more in their digital notebooks than what Google Keep provides. I found it easy to quickly create drawn notes in Zoho Notebook. That quick drawing capability could make Zoho Notebook a great option for students to use to take notes in math, science, or any other subject where typing isn't always the most efficient way to record notes.
