See How The Hausas Raised Alarm After Sighting Fulani In Trucks In Cross River State

In an earlier report on how two trucks filled of Fulani indigenes were intercepted at a checkpoint in Ogoja local government area in Cross River state after an alarm was raised by Hausa villagers who sighted them while coming down from the truck to buy food on Sunday, May 6th. Youths from the host community where the Fulanis stopped at Ogoja - came in agreement and refused the Fulanis from settling there as they chased them away.

According to an eyewitness, "the Fulanis came with two armed escorts – an Army Officer and a Policeman since they suspected the locals could resist them if eventually they got to know". To their greatest surprise, the Hausas who have been living in Garki over the years were the first to raise alarm and called the attention of the public about the "new faces" who have come to join them''.

According to the Hausas, "The new Fulanis will make life difficult and hostile for them to continue living in Ogoja peacefully because it is possible they were driven from wherever they came from because they were killer Herdsmen".

Youths chased the Fulanis from Garki, to Yahe in Yala. When the people of Yahe saw what was going on, they joined in the campaign and chased them farther through the borders of Yala and Ikom.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Ms Irene Ugbo said that actually two trucks loaded with Fulani Herdsmen arrived the towns but were returned back with armed escorts.

Police IG Idris Rebuff The Senate For Third Time.

NASS

The Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, has ignored to honour the invitation to appear before the Senate for the third time.

Mr Idris has rebuffed the Senate for three weeks. The IG was expected to give more insight to the Senate on the arrest of a lawmaker, Dino Melaye, and prevalent killings across the Nation.

The police boss was first summoned on April 25 but he did not honour the invitation and did not  appear.

On the day he was expected, the chairman of senate committee on police affairs, Abu Ibrahim, informed the lawmakers that the IGP had accompanied President Muhammadu Buhari to Bauchi.

The Senate re-summoned Mr Idris after it refused to allow the deputy Inspector-General of Operations to represent him.

The lawmakers summoned Mr Idris to appear on May 2 by 11 a.m. Again, he did not show up.

Mr Ibrahim said last week he had not been able to reach Mr Idris for a while.

He said he later found out the police chief had travelled to Kaduna instead of honouring the Senate's invitation.

The Senate issued a third summons following a suggestion by the senate president, Bukola Saraki.

Mr Idris was asked to attend the senate plenary today, May 9.

But when it was time for the IGP to be ushered in to the senate chamber, the lawmakers realised Mr Idris was not available.

Mr Saraki announced his non-appearance after some minutes of wait to allow him into the chamber.

"I've just been informed that the IG or any member of his team are not here," he said.

The lawmakers are currently deliberating on next line of action.

Chief Ernest Shonekan Is 82nd Today

Posted: 09 May 2018 01:24 AM PDT

Chief Ernest Shonekan Is 82nd Today

Chief Ernest Shonekan is celebrating his 82nd birthday today and we have decided to pay some tribute to the elder statesman with this brief from Wikipedia.

Read below:

Chief Ernest Adegunle Oladeinde Shonekan (born 9 May 1936 in Lagos, Colonial Nigeria) is a British-trained Nigerian lawyer, industrialist, politician and traditional chieftain. He was appointed as interim president of Nigeria by General Ibrahim Babangida on the 26th of August, 1993.

Babangida resigned under pressure to cede control to a democratic government. Shonekan's transitional administration only lasted three months, as a palace coup led by General Sani Abacha forcefully dismantled the remaining democratic institutions and brought the government back under military control on the 17th of November, 1993.

Prior to his political career, Shonekan was the chief executive of the United African Company of Nigeria PLC, a large Nigerian conglomerate.

Interim government

Oloye Shonekan assumed the office of President of Nigeria on the 26th of August, 1993, with Babangida's blessing. The nation was gradually moving towards a stalemate. Shonekan had lobbied for debt cancellation but, after the cancellation of the 12th June elections, most of the western powers had imposed economic sanctions on Nigeria.

Inflation was uncontrollable and most non-oil foreign investment disappeared. The political problems continued. The winner of the June the 12th elections vowed to oppose the interim government. The democracy supporters of southwest Nigeria, Shonekan's region, considered him an obstacle on the nation's path to democracy, social justice, and improving the welfare of the people. During his few months in power, he tried to create a new timetable for democratic return, while his government was hampered by a workers' strike.

Shonekan released political prisoners detained by Babangida. He tried to set a timetable for troop withdrawal from ECOMOG's peacekeeping mission in Liberia. The government also initiated an audit of the accounts of NNPC, the oil giant, an organisation that had many operational inefficiencies. Shonekan's administration introduced a bill to repeal three major draconian decrees of the military government.

His control of the military was loose. This would ultimately prove to be his undoing, as the defence secretary made a military coup and took control of power in November 1993, just a few months into the administration.

We say a happy birthday to baba..........
