NUPENG issues 7-day ultimatum, fuel scarcity imminent

Posted: 29 Jun 2018 06:42 PM PDT

The National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers NUPENG, Port-Harcourt Zone has issued a 7-day ultimatum to one of the oil companies operating in the zone for alleged unlawful disengagement of some of its members.

Mr. Alex Agwanwor, Chairman of the Port Harcourt zone of NUPENG, while briefing news men in Port Harcourt said the ultimatum was an outcome of an extensive deliberation by the union over the matter.

According to the Daily Trust, the NUPENG Chairman said, three hundred of their members were unlawfully disengaged by the company, stressing that the move was against labour laws.

Mr. Agwanwor therefore said he called on the government to prevail on the company to rescind the decision, failure which their members in the zone will withdraw their services indefinitely.

"After an exhaustive meeting and deliberations by the Zonal Council of this union covering the 10 states in the South have resolved that a 7-day ultimatum has been issued for the unlawful disengagement and anti labour practices of some oil serving companies operating within the Port Harcourt Zone.

"The leadership of the Union wish to register our displeasure over the unwarranted disengagement of our members on board of a rig belonging to one of the oil servicing companies and the hostage taking of the workers by the management of the company.

"The management's action is anti labour, uncivilized and condemnable and without giving recourse to their agreement they went ahead to terminate the contract of over three hundred of our members.

"We hereby give 7 days ultimatum to OES Deep See Offshore and other anti union companies who are fond of violating Labour Laws.

"If nothing is done by these companies to reverse their anti labour practices we will embark on an indefinite strike and we will be left with no choice than to withdraw our service.

"We will make sure this affects everywhere our members are involved including refineries and oil depots," Alex said.

Mr. Bassey Harry who is the National Vice President of NUPENG, on his part said, he expressed the support of the National leadership of the union to the decision of the zone.

Premium Times sacks Andrew Ajijah for publishing a false report on Miyetti Allah

Posted: 29 Jun 2018 06:43 PM PDT

Few days ago we published a story regarding the statement from Miyetti Allah, that he said the attack on Plateau villages where over 100 were massacred was a retaliatory attack.

However we published the news based on the report by Premium Times  reporter. Premium Times has now apologised to Miyetti Allah as it has discovered that there was no recording or evidence that Miyetti Allah said so and has sacked it's reporter.

See the new story as published by News Agency of Nigeria:

Premium Times, a popular online newspaper, has sacked its Jos-based reporter, Mr. Andrew Ajijah, over a false story credited to Miyetti Allah on the mayhem in Plateau in which 100 people were killed.

The management of Premium Times has also resolved to apologise to Mr. Danladi Ciroma, the North Central leader of the apex cattle breeders' organisation over the story published on June 25.

The story with the headline, "Killing of nearly 100 people in Plateau 'retaliatory' — Miyetti Allah'' turned out to be false.

The Premium Times had reported that the violence that erupted in 11 villages in some local governments was retaliation by the herders whose cattle were killed.

Mr Ajijah's report in Premium Times quoted Ciroma as saying: "These attacks are retaliatory. As much as I don't support the killing of human being, the truth must be told that those who carried out the attacks must be on revenge mission."

"Fulani herdsmen have lost about 300 cows in the last few weeks – 94 cows were rustled by armed Berom youths in Fan village, another 36 cows were killed by Berom youths. In addition to that, 174 cattle were rustled."

Miyetti Allah distanced itself from the report that went viral and the insinuations that it justified the killings of over 100 people in Plateau State.

Ciroma, was reported as saying that the killings were a retaliation of previous acts of deadly aggression against Fulani residents and pastoralists in the state.

PREMIUM TIMES published the alleged statement, which was the first to be attributed to Miyetti Allah in the wake of the chilling massacre.

The denial and strong protest by Ciroma led to an extensive investigation by the respected online newspaper which discovered some infractions on the part of the reporter.

Premium Times therefore stated as follows:

"While Mr Ciroma acknowledged speaking with a reporter on Monday in Jos, he insisted to PREMIUM TIMES that he did not make the statement credited to him. In fact, he said what he told the reporter was the opposite of what was reported.

"I told the reporter that leaders at the local and national levels should come together and resolve this crisis before it is too late," Mr Ciroma said by telephone Wednesday night, protesting strongly the comments attributed to him.

"An internal investigation by PREMIUM TIMES found that there was no recording of any interview in which Mr Ciroma made the statement, neither was any statement signed or circulated by him that contained the quotes.

"The error was traced to our outstation reporter based in Jos, whose failure to properly attribute the source of the purported statement by Mr Ciroma misled the editors into believing that it was e-mailed to the reporter.

"The reporter filed the story on Monday morning based on 'a statement' from Mr Ciroma. But checks by PREMIUM TIMES following Mr Ciroma's protest on Wednesday afternoon showed that the quotes were lifted from The Nation Newspapers.

"The Nation's reporter in Plateau State also circulated the quotes in the WhatsApp group of reporters on the government house beat in Jos, telling his colleagues they were the full transcription of his interview with Mr Ciroma.

"The reporter later admitted to PREMIUM TIMES that he did not have a recording of his call with Mr Ciroma, but said the quotes mirrored the Miyetti Allah leader's position on the latest killings in Plateau State.

"The Nation published the purported quotes by Mr Ciroma hours before our reporter in Jos lifted it without attribution, thus misleading his editors in Abuja.

"PREMIUM TIMES management has initiated an ethics and professional review of the reporter's work; how it came to be that his sourcing for the story fell below house standards, and how his documentation fails to measure up to expected standards for verification and accuracy.

"Even if Mr Ciroma made the purported statement, newsroom managers agreed yesterday, the expectations would be to report it with proper recording or digital footprints, for the simple reason that ethical journalism places the onus on the reporter to document proof of sources' contribution to a story.

"When one of the editors on duty called our reporter to find out how the story was sourced shortly before passing it on Monday morning, he said it was personally sent out by Mr Ciroma. This turned out to be the WhatsApp group broadcast by The Nation reporter, which several other Jos-based print and electronic correspondents sent to their respective media organisations throughout Monday.

"This again brings to fore the limits of a common culture in Nigerian beat reporting where correspondents share stories amongst themselves in the manner of pool reporting. While journalists cannot be at two or more events simultaneously, standards in ethical reporting require reporters to ensure thorough verification of any second-hand information".

PREMIUM TIMES publisher, Dapo Olorunyomi, admitted in a meeting with newsroom senior editors yesterday that the paper was substantially in error with respect to its reporting on Mr. Ciroma's role in the conflict in Jos.

"This is very much below the standards of verification we strive to maintain and for which we have come to earn the trust of our readers. As a first step, we are sending an apology letter to Mr. Ciroma regretting the mischaracterisation of his role, and assuring him that a disciplinary process is currently apace to ensure accountability for the breakdown in our editorial procedures."

The controversial attribution to Miyetti Allah came as the media were facing allegations of bias in its coverage of the ongoing killings in the country.

In February, presidential spokesperson, Garba Shehu disparaged the media for its coverage of the killings. PREMIUM TIMES largely restrains from using potentially harmful stereotypes or slurs save for where authoritative references have linked an incident to a group pattern.

"Stop Heating Up The Polity" - Governor Okowa Tells Oshiomole

Posted: 29 Jun 2018 03:24 PM PDT

Adams Oshiomole and Ifeanyi Okowa

The Delta State Governor, Dr Arthur Ifeanyi Okowa has urged the new National Chairman of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Comrade Adams Oshiomhole to exercise restraint in his utterances as they were capable of heating up the polity.

Responding to alleged remarks by the new APC helmsman that his emergence marked the annihilation of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and APC take-over of Delta State in 2019, Governor Okowa charged the former Edo State governor to be mindful of his political utterances.

According to Daily Trust, Dr Okowa charged politicians to be cautious in the choice of words and be decent in their approach to issues as activities towards the 2019 general elections commence.

Okowa, who responded to questions from journalists at the second 2018 media interaction stated that Nigerians should not be divided because of politics.

"I believe that Comrade Oshiomhole is playing politics just as Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has a right to play politics as well as any other political party. The only advice I have for all politicians both in PDP and APC is that there must be decorum.

"We must be cautious in the language that we use as they should be decent and I believe that what politicians need to do is to address issues and when issues are addressed the people will make their choice.

"As politicians wherever you are, try to be civil in your approach to politics because that is the way it ought to be," the governor said.

The Governor responding to journalist on the visit of a PDP presidential aspirant and former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, said: "If you followed us properly when he (Alhaji Abubakar) addressed Deltans, it was obvious that he made a lot of statements which did interest our people and he did say that he is a friend of the state and if his programmes as he has said continues to interest the people, I will not be the one to hold back the hands of the people.

"I am not going to force any Deltan to vote the way I think; Deltans who will be delegates in the convention will be allowed to exercise their discretion to vote. I am not the kind of person who insists on how a person should vote.

"So, if on his programmes he talked about restructuring and the people are excited and they want to follow him, they have that right. So I made my statement and it was clear and cautious and when Sule Lamido came, he spoke so well and he is also a man I respect. He also has his followers in the state. He was well received and I made my comments. So it is my hope that all the presidential aspirants in the PDP will start to talk with each other because not all of them will get into the final stage," he stated.

Dr Okowa further said; "As I spoke when Alhaji Abubakar came, I was very cautious and that is because, I do not want as a governor to say that this is the man I am supporting, I do not want to directly support any candidate and people will be given the room to make their choice. The will of the people will be allowed to prevail and not my will."

"We will blow up your properties" – Militants threaten Senators, Reps over 2018 budget

Posted: 29 Jun 2018 09:17 AM PDT

Militants in the Niger-Delta has threatened to blow up properties belonging to National Assembly  members from the region.

According to a report by PoliticsNGR, the militants has declared the National Assembly members as 'enemies of the region' for irresponsibly consenting to the cutback of funds allocated to key infrastructural projects for the region in the 2018 national budget.

The militants, at a meeting in Egbema, Delta state, blasted the lawmakers, branding their move as "ineptitude, foolishness, non-committed approach and dumbness."

Read below the statement from the group:

"The RNDA has declared all National Assembly members from the Niger Delta region as the true enemies of the development of the region and would deal decisively with them while their properties scattered across the Niger Delta region will receive a dose of our ravaging dynamites.

We note that the National Assembly members have not been able to attract projects but would sit down and fold their hands in the Green and Red chambers and superintend over reduction of funding for key projects attracted to the development of the long-neglected region by others.

It is shameful and abysmal failure on the part of our legislators in the National Assembly to sit down and endorse this injustice done to the people of the region when the President had already allocated funds for such projects with direct positive impact on the people.

It is totally unacceptable in this era as it will no longer be condoned for our elected representatives to pursue their personal interest to the detriment of the region's development as was clearly displayed by former President Goodluck Jonathan in his epileptic six years reign while under his blind watch, allowed some of his ministers and cohorts to milk the wealth of the region dry without contributing any single project to the region.

We were totally taken aback over the reduction of funds allocated to the Nigerian Maritime University, Okerenko. This was one project that we sacrificed our lives in the creek to fight for, the second Niger bridge, the East- West road that cuts across all the Niger Delta states, which former President Jonathan and his PDP government could not complete among other critical projects by the National Assembly."

The Federal Government says it has concluded plans to commence disbursement of the recovered $322 million dollars Abacha loot through Conditional Cash Transfers (CCT) to 302,000 poor households in 19 states in July.

The National Cash Transfer Office (NTCO), Tukur Rumar disclosed this at a round-table on assets recovery organised by the Swiss Embassy on Thursday, in Abuja.

The 19 states include: Niger, Kogi, Ekiti, Osun, Oyo, Kwara, Cross River, Bauchi, Gombe, Jigawa, Benue, Taraba, Adamawa, Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, Plateau, Nasarrawa, Anambra and Internally Displaced Persons Camps (IDPs) in Borno.

According to Rumar, the benefiting households will receive N5,000 monthly.

The DAILY POST reported that Mr Iorwa Apera, the National Coordinator, National Social Safety Net Coordinating Office (NASSCO), said 503,055 households were already on the NSR register from the 19 states, adding that by July, there would be a social register for all the states of the federation.

"The Federal Government would begin with those states, because they had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with NASSCO to put in place certain infrastructure to empower the national register.

"Some of the states delayed, but the other ones were quick enough to set up infrastructure that allowed us to start work there, but all the states are now on board as they have set up their state operating offices and donated office equipment to us.

"As states come on board, we enroll and so they extend to the beneficiary register, and presently we are generating data in all the states now,'' he said.
