Many People Feared Killed As Gunmen Raid And Take Over Villages In Plateau State

Posted: 24 Jun 2018 12:38 PM PDT

As published by Vanguard on June 24, 2018

Condemnations have continued to trail weekend's attacks and killings in villages in Barkin Ladi, Mangu and Riyom local government areas of Plateau State were unconfirmed reports say more than 100 bodies have so far been picked while over 200 people are currently receiving treatments in various hospitals in the State.

Vanguard gathered that heavily armed gunmen invaded the affected areas including Exland, Gindin Akwati, Ruku, Nghar, Kura Falls and Kakuruk all in Gashish district as well as Rakok, Kok and Razat villages all in Ropp district of the local government area, shooting sporadically, killing people, injuring others and setting structures ablaze.

Similar attack had caused heavily barricade of roads along Mangu Halle in Mangu local government area where youths protested the incessant killings in the area and some mourners on Saturday escaped death along Barkin Ladi – Bokkos road as they were bombarded by gunshots by the herders who occupied the expressway.

Security agencies were on Sunday searching and evacuating corpses and rescuing the injured and the Spokesman of Operation Safe Haven, Major Adam Umar told Vanguard, "There was an incident yesterday (Saturday) in Barkin Ladi, some attackers stormed the general area and started shooting sporadically.

"The sound of the gunshots attracted our personnel, they immediately mobilized towards the area the gunshots were coming from, on reaching there, they came under heavy fire. The incident is still ongoing though under control; there are casualties because there were gunshots and fire fight between our personnel and the attackers but for now, the number is not ascertained."

Many people are said to be trapped in the bushes and attacks are still being launched in some yet to be identified villages in the area. But the State Government in a statement by its Commissioner for Information and Communication, Yakubu Dati has said it is deeply pained that "despite concerted efforts which had led to the restoration of relative peace across the state, some unpatriotic elements are bent on disrupting the gains so far made." The statement condemned the attacks, assuring government had mobilised the "full compliments of security forces that are restoring normalcy in the affected areas and the environs." Also, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP has described the incident as "genocide" and called on the international community to come to the aid of the State.

In a statement issued in Jos and signed by the Party's Publicity Secretary, John Akans, "We received with rude shock the level of genocide going on now in Gashish District, Razat, Ruku Nyarr and Gana-Ropp, all in Barkin Ladi Local Government. We also note with great pains the dastardly attacks ongoing in many other local government areas in the State by the Fulani militias. "We condemn in the strongest terms the level of continuous genocide of Plateau people. At the moment Barkin Ladi is under siege with over 130 people feared to have been killed. As at time of this statement, the (SOM) CAPRO School of missions Gana-Ropp is under heavy attack by the militias. "This unholy act of systematic genocide and the destruction of the cultural heritage of Plateau people must stop. We call on the international community to come to the aid of Plateau people as besides the over 130 people killed many are missing."

How PDP Is Secretly Wooing Obasanjo

Posted: 24 Jun 2018 11:12 AM PDT

As Published by Vanguard on Sat, 23 Jun 2018

In its determination to mend fences with former members ahead of the 2019 general elections, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has intensified moves to convince former President Olusegun Obasanjo to rejoin the party in the next few weeks.

Saturday Vanguard gathered on Wednesday that apart from the party's Contact and Integration Committee and the Reconciliation Committee currently reaching out to all disgruntled members who left the PDP, the National Working Committee of the party led by Prince Uche Secondus has come up with yet another means of reaching out to Obasanjo, the first elected President on the platform of the party in the 1999 general election.

The move, according to findings involves the deployment of Colonel Habibu Shuaibu (retd), a former Military Administrator of Niger and Plateau States to help convey the message of reconciliation to the former chairman, Board of Trustees (BoT) of the party.

A dependable source said Colonel Shuaibu who remains a close confidant of former Military President, General Ibrahim Babangida (retd) and Obasanjo is confident that the latter would let go of whatever grouse he nursed against the PDP.

The retired Colonel, it would be recalled, was recently named Deputy Director General (North) of the Kabiru Turaki Presidential Campaign Council and has been a good voice calling for nationwide support for the PDP in the wake of the public apology tendered on behalf of the party by Secondus at a public forum in Abuja not long ago.

A highly placed sourced who craved anonymity revealed that part of Shuaibu's mission would be to pledge the party's readiness to play by the rules in the processes leading to the choice of the Presidential candidate for the 2019 elections, in line with the renewed vision of the Secondus-led NWC.

"When the party held a press conference sometime ago to call on all those who left the party to feel free to return; it was a serious call for all those who love Nigeria and who want to see a better Nigeria after President Muhammadu Buhari's tenure in 2019.

We are aware that Baba is aggrieved and as party, we are already re-positioning to correct the wrongs of the past. "Talks have taken place and they will continue to take place because Baba at the end would agree with us that the All Progressives Congress (APC) does not have the blueprint to transform this nation for good.

So, in addition to the formal channels of the party to address issues of reconciliation, the party is reaching out to him through other means," he said.

When asked if "other means" included moves by the former Military Administrator, the source was evasive but would later give himself away when he said that "his close link with General IBB and the fact that he is one of the image makers of one of our Presidential aspirants makes him the natural pick to complement the incredible works our various committees have been doing."

It is not clear if Shuaibu would also drum support for Turaki's bid when he meets the ex-President in the next few days.

Obasanjo's relationship with President Buhari is at an all-time low with the former President crying out recently of a plot to implicate and incarcerate him; an allegation the opposition warned against; given its capacity to heat up the polity, if truly such a move was in the works.

Why June 12 Election Was Annulled; Real Reason Revealed, Why Military Jailed MKO Abiola

Posted: 24 Jun 2018 08:53 AM PDT

The former governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido says that the real reason behind the annulment of June 12 election was  because the military did not want to pay Chief MKO Abiola his N45bn debt.

The former governor disclosed this in an interview with Punch Newspaper. Lamido said the military told him that the election was cancelled because if Abiola, the acclaimed winner of the election, became president, he would have taken the money, causing the country to go bankrupt.

Lamido, who was the national secretary of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), the party platform chief MKO Abiola contested, said Abiola made the claim of the money after the death of Murtala Muhammed, late military head of state, but the military turned his request down.

"When (General) Murtala (Muhammed) died, Abiola came in with a claim that he was owed, I think, about N45bn for contracts executed by International Telephone and Telecommunication for the ministry of communications," Lamido said.
"Murtala and Abiola were very, very close. One of the reasons they gave for annulling June 12 was that if they made him president, he will take his money and the country will run bankrupt.

"The military high command at that time said no. He went round the emirs in the north to lobby and the emirs asked that they (military) should please pay the money. They (military) said they cancelled the June 12 elections because if they made him president, he would take his money and the country will become bankrupt.

"Those who were close to Abacha should know this, because Abacha was then one of the big shots; they were all aware. There was this Bosnian war going on in Yugoslavia. I said sir, the Nigerian people are very innocent. This is like the case of a Bosnian woman raped by a Christian Serb who got pregnant. Yes, it is true that the pregnancy is a product of rape but this is also my flesh and blood, I cannot kill it. This (election) is my baby, my flesh and blood, I will not kill it. I said so.

"We went through a process and expenditure, the campaign, the Election Day and even the entire government machinery was involved in the election which we won and you are now coming with the excuse that you owed some money. That's your problem. The baby is my baby. Yes, it is a product of rape but I can't kill it. At that time, the Nigerian mood had been worked to go against June 12.

"After the annulment of June 12 (1993), I was called by the people who were then holding forth and I made it very clear that we were through with elections; we will only come back to it in 1996 because we ran an election, you cannot annul it and say we should go back and hold another one. They then told me the reason why they annulled June 12."

Asked his position on the conferment of the GCFR and GCON honours on Abiola and his running mate, Babagana Kingibe, Lamido said "It was a case of opportunism".

He described the annulment of the election as "a pattern that had been established, a continuation of a tradition of disqualifying candidates to annulling conventions."

Lamido, who is seeking to contest the 2019 presidential election, said he would withdraw the honour from Kingibe if elected president.

"I will go into the archive and bring out the genuine results and if Abiola is the winner, I will call INEC to announce the results and I will then go through the process and make sure we pay the N45bn he was owed because to me that was the main reason behind the annulment of June 12," he said.

"After that, I will strip Kingibe of the honour. I will withdraw it, because there is nothing like honour there. He was the first to betray June 12. He was the vice president-elect, but he followed his kinsmen, Abacha to undermine June 12.

"When Abiola was picked up, did they pick Kingibe? He was not picked because he was willing to trade it off, and that was why he was made a minister. After withdrawing Kingibe's title, we will then find a better way to honour Abiola properly because the title giving him posthumously is only given to someone that has been sworn in."
