R-APC Has Petitioned INEC To Declare Null And Void The Election Oshiomhole, 17 Other National Officers Of APC

Posted: 11 Jul 2018 05:14 PM PDT

T

he Reformed All Progressives Congress, R-APC has petitioned the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC to invalidate the election of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole as national chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC upon alleged irregularities at the convention where he emerged.

Besides Oshiomhole, the R-APC is also seeking the annulment of the election of 18 other national officers who emerged at the convention. In the petition authored by the chairman of the R-APC, Engr. Buba Galadima, the faction alleged that the conduct of the convention violated several provisions of the party's constitution and the Electoral Act.

The petition which was submitted on July 4, 2018 was backed with video evidence to show the alleged irregularities. APC national publicity secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi in a sharp rebuttal said INEC has no role to play in the invalidation of a party convention even as he questioned the basis of the petitioner as to whether he was a candidate in the election.

Galadima in the petition wrote:

"I write as a foundation member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), a member of its Board of Trustees, National Caucus and an automatic delegate at its National Convention, to bring to your notice that on 23rd June, 2018, the All Progressive Congress (APC) purportedly held a very flawed and undemocratic Convention for the purpose of electing its National Officers following the disputed Congresses held in various Wards (May 2, 2018), Local Governments (May 5, 2018), State Congress (May 8, 2018).

"These Congresses leading up to the National Convention of the party were marred with serious irregularities and manipulations to the extent that in at least 22 States, parallel Congresses were held and different set of delegates and officers emerged. Some of the States includes: Abia, Adamawa, Bauchi, Benue, Cross-River, Delta, Enugu, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos, Niger, Ondo, Oyo, Rivers, Sokoto and Zamfara. "You should please access the Report of your offices in these States for confirmation.

He observed that the emergence of the 18 officers violated Article 20 (1) of the APC Constitution stipulating that officers of the party should only emerge through democratic means.

The officers he listed were

1. National Chairman – Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.

2. National Welfare Secretary – Alhaji Ibrahim Masari.

3. National Financial Secretary – Alhaji Tunde Bello.

4. National Physically Challenged – by Misbahu L. Didi.

5. Zonal Secretary North-Central – Dr. Zakari Muhammed.

6. Zonal Organising Secretary North-Central – Ibrahim M. Abdul.

7. Zonal Women Leader North-Central – Hajia Hassana Abdullahi.

8. Ex-Officio North-Central – Nelson Abba.

9. Zonal Secretary North-East – Abubakar Sadiq Ajia

10. Ex-Officio North-East – Mallam Isah Azare.

11. Zonal Secretary North-West – Tukur A. Gusau.

12. Zonal Organizing Secretary North-West – Abdulmunab Muhammad.

13. Ex-Officio, North-West – Nasiru Haladu Danu.

14. Zonal Woman Leader South-South – Mrs. Rachael Akpabio.

15. Ex-Officio, South-South – Kotenten Ibadan.

16. Zonal Secretary South-West – Ayo Afolabi.

17. Zonal Women Leader South-West – Mrs. Kemi Nelson.

He alleged that the withdrawal of several candidates was compelled on the convention floor without following any due process especially for the office of National Secretary and others.

"What transpired was that the Chairman of the Convention, His Excellency, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar flagrantly usurped the powers of the delegates and declared 18 officers elected without following the laid down criteria. I have attached the video recording of the relevant aspects of the proceedings of the convention for your perusal. The Convention held on 23rd June, 2018 which purportedly produced the National Officers of the APC was not conducted in a democratic manner as required by Article 20(1) of the APC Constitution, the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Electoral Act.

"All attempts to activate the appeal processes and internal mechanisms of seeking redress as a senior member of the APC was frustrated by the party." He thus prayed "INEC to intervene, following precedents established over the years, to declare invalid and unlawful and not to accord any form of recognition to officers purportedly elected at the APC Convention of June 23, 2018.

"The officers include the aforesaid 18 officers and indeed all those who purportedly withdrew during the Convention as they were just declared elected by the Chairman of the Convention Committee without a "Yes" or "No" vote and indeed without any form of democratic foundation.

"It also includes the remaining officers as the Delegates election that produced them was seriously flawed and not in compliance with relevant rules. Their emergence is a breach of the 1999 Constitution, the Electoral Act and the Constitution of the APC (Article 20(1))."

A National Campaign Against Fake News Launched In Nigeria- Sponsored By NTA, FRCN And Others

Posted: 11 Jul 2018 04:43 PM PDT

The Minister of Information Alhaji Lai Mohammed has launched a campaign against fake news in Nigeria. The News Agency of Nigeria, has reported the full details of the Minister's campaign plan.

Read full details as published by NAN:

According to NAN, A National Campaign Against Fake News has been launched in Nigeria by the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, who described the phenomenon a time bomb that can detonate with deadly consequences if left unchecked.

At a world press conference in Abuja on Wednesday, the Minister also described fake news a a global epidemic that could be worse than all the plagues that the world has recorded put together, a clear and present danger to global peace and security, and a threat to democracy.

He said the fake news phenomenon is capable of undermining confidence in the media, adding: "Once the people lose confidence in the media, the media and the society are in trouble."

Alhaji Mohammed said the essence of the campaign is to "sensitize all Nigerians to the dangers posed to the peace and security, and indeed the corporate existence of Nigeria by the phenomenon, and the fact that each and every Nigerian has a role to play in curtailing the spread of fake news".

He explained that though the federal government has been calling national attention to the issue of fake news and hate speeches since last year, "the timing of the launch is also not unconnected to the role of fake news in aggravating the various crises in the country as well as the need to check this phenomenon ahead of the 2019 elections."

The Minister said the government will use all the information dissemination tools at its disposal, work with both the traditional and social media, as well as the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to sensitize Nigerians.

He said the campaign will, however, not involve the use of coercion and censorship, but appealed to the media to lead the campaign, and to Nigerians not to share any news or message unless they can vouch for its source and authenticity

Citing instances from around the world to illustrate the dangers posed by fake news, Alhaji Mohammed said a recent study by researchers at the Ohio State University in the US concluded that Russian interference and the fake news it promoted probably played a significant role in depressing Hilary Clinton's support on election day during the 2016 presidential elections in the US.

He also said that in India, about a dozen people have been killed in the past six weeks just because of fake news or hoax messages, noting: "The victims were lynched after they were falsely accused of child abduction based on fake messages circulated via the social media platform, WhatsApp."

The Minister said that last week, a national newspaper in Nigeria reported on its front page that a court has ordered the National Assembly to begin impeachment of Buhari, which was not the case.

"The problem with that news item is that it is fake news. According to the certified true copy of the order, the Presiding Judge of the Federal High Court in Osogbo ordered and I quote: 'The applicants are hereby granted leave to issue and bring an Application for the order of Mandamus to compel 1st to 3rd Respondents to start impeachment proceedings against the 4th Respondent, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria'. This was manipulated to read that the court has given the go-ahead for the National Assembly to commence impeachment proceedings against the President. Fake News," he said

The launch, which was sponsored by the NTA, FRCN, and three newspapers – The Nation, Vanguard and Leadership – was attended by all the heads of the media parastatals under the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture, President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), representatives of the security agencies, social media practitioners and journalists.

"We Didn't Vote For Killings" - Tambuwal To Buhari

Posted: 11 Jul 2018 09:47 AM PDT

Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal, the Sokoto State Governor, has blamed the killings in the country on failure of the leadership.

Aminu Tambuwal, in a statement he signed and released yesterday said the deaths were avoidable and preventable.

"The worst part of all this is that these deaths are avoidable and the killings preventable. It boils down, at the end of the day, to failure of leadership. Nigeria cannot progress and be part of a 21st Century forward looking world by creating new batches of mourners every other day.

"This is not the way to go. That is not what Nigerians voted for in 2015. That is not what will build a virile, united, united, politically stable and economically prosperous African giant," he said.

The former Speaker of the House of Representatives in his statement also commiserated with the families of those killed across the country.

"I wish to commiserate with the families, friends, colleagues and associates of all our beloved fellow citizens, who lost their lives in the persistent and senseless killings now occurring in all parts of our dear country. Indeed, the growing spate of mindless shedding of innocent blood, especially of policemen and other security personnel on their lawful duty posts, has brought a new dimension to the reprehensible state of insecurity in the country.

"Last May, three policemen were shot dead in Sokoto State by kidnappers, who abducted a Syrian national they were escorting. A few days later, four police officers were ambushed and killed in Benue State. Last week, seven policemen were reportedly gunned down, in cold blood, in Abuja, and their arms and ammunition taken by unknown persons.

"This is happening amidst repeatedly reported cases of attacks on police stations and other security facilities in various parts of the country.

"The question from every law abiding citizen today is: "Who will protect us, when even those constitutionally charged with the responsibility of protecting our lives and property have, themselves, become vulnerable targets of criminals? Where shall we run to for protection, when the institutions of state put in place to protect us are being progressively dismantled by opportunistic criminality and the trained personnel are also on the run?

"It bears repeating for me to state here that Nigeria's security architecture and the strategies currently adopted and deployed for national security, if any, need a comprehensive overhaul. It is not working. The needless waste of life everywhere, both those of trained security personnel and ordinary citizens, is a drain on the nation's resources and an unacceptable diminution of our valuable human capital.

"Every policeman or military personnel is someone's father, mother, brother, sister, uncle, aunt or friend. The number and frequency of deaths is undermining our humanity, making us less sensitive to the gravity of the situation we are in today and also creating a new generation of Nigerians, who may get accustomed to inhuman acts as the norm."
