Report Yourself Or Be Declared Wanted, Police Tells Melaye Over Convoy Shooting

Posted: 20 Jul 2018 05:58 PM PDT

CP Ali Janga

The Nigeria Police threatens to declare Senator Dino Melaye wanted if he fails to report himself to answer questions on allegations he accused the force of.

On Thursday, Senator Melaye had accused the police of shooting at his convoy on his way to inaugurate a project in his constituency in Kogi State.

The Kogi State Commissioner of Police, Mr Ali Janga, reacting to Dino's accusation, noted that while the accusations were untrue, the police opened fire in defence of a alleged shooting by some individuals in the lawmaker's convoy.

The Commissioner of Police, made this disclosure on Friday while addressing newsmen in his office.

"Unidentified civilians inside (a vehicle in the convoy) decided to open fire on my policemen. You don't expect the police to fold their arms; eventually they replied and opened fire too," Janga said.

"Dino has been going round telling people that he was attacked by unidentified people armed men; no, they were real police officers.

"They were there on assignment. Nobody attacked Dino but rather, his convoy attacked my policemen and they repelled," he added.

The Kogi State Police henchman condemned the alleged assault on the police officers who were on official duty at the time the incident took place. He however, said the lawmaker has been invited for questioning and that the police would be forced to declare him wanted, should he refuse to honour the invitation.

"We are going after him (Melaye) and if we cannot see him, we will declare him wanted and we will send his name for watchlisting," Janga said.

Osun State Governorship Election, A Done Deal For APC – Oshiomole

Posted: 20 Jul 2018 04:14 PM PDT

Adams_1
Adams Oshiomhole

Comrade Adams Oshiomole, the National Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC), has said that the forthcoming Osun State governorship election is going to be a walk-over for the APC, saying the party is confident to emerge victorious.

Oshiohmole made this disclosure on Friday, in a chat with State House correspondents after a closed door meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the presidential villa, Abuja, that APC had no political challenges in Osun as the state governor, Rauf Aregbesola, was at home with the people.

According to Oshiomhole, Gov. Aregbesola is a mobiliser, an organiser and an astute politician, capable of winning elections for the party in the state.

He explained that the party had resolved to adopt direct primaries to elect candidates for the Sept. 22 governorship election in Osun.

The APC Chairman added that "as for Osun State, we are even much more confident because we have a governor who is at home with his people, a mobiliser, an organiser and an astute politician.

"We have also decided that in order to give people a more sense of ownership in the electoral process, we will use direct primaries, which means that every card-carrying member of APC will participate in choosing who should fly the party's flag.

"The method will give more people a sense of ownership and a sense of commitment to the candidate that they have all chosen.

"It will also return the party to the grassroots so it can have new sense of renewed ownership, renewed sense of participation and inclusion by itself and a value that will make the actual election easier.

"So, we are confident that the great people of Osun State will vote for our party because the candidate that will emerge will be the candidate chosen by the party members and not the party oligarchy. That makes a lot of difference."

Responding on the reported threat of mass defection from the APC, Oshiohmole dismissed the reports, saying it was the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that suffered from mass defection.

He said: "I think it is something you should ask the PDP. They are the ones who suffered huge, huge mass defection even of the so called founding fathers.

"I mean, in those good old days, people like Professor Jerry Gana will tell us, we are the founding fathers.

"People like President Obasanjo will tell us, you know I was the first President. All of these people are gone.

"I think the media need to get more engage and scrutinise us, those of us who are political players. When we speak from both sides of the mouth or we are turning the story upside down.

Just few months back, you know that a good section after their convention, people like Oyederan, Prof. Jerry Gana and a host of others who can be said to be founding fathers of that party, they left to form what they call SDP or ADC or both.

"So, they broke out and then when it dawn on them that even together we defeated them just four years ago, and now further factionalised, what can they do.''

He said that members of the opposition were only interested in power not the welfare of Nigerians.

According to him, the PDP just want to capture power for the sake of power.

"So they say, even though we have already broken the house, can we for the sake of power come together. Does it make sense?

"In the morning, you broke away from PDP to SDP and then to ADC.

"And there is no better proof than that old man who is going round as an organising secretary recruiting people, looking for tired players to continue with a third term agenda which Nigerians have rejected.

"By whatever form they come in, Nigerians have spoken. They are not going to return to the era where central bank and NNPC security money is shared to people based on PDP philosophy 'share the money'. We won't do that, if they have forgotten.

"It is quite easy for robbers to forget easily the robbery they just did but it is not easy for the victim of the robbery to forget,'' he said to further buttress his point.

On the conduct of APC congresses in Imo as directed by the court and the subsequent court injunction, Oshiohmole said he was not aware of any court injunction against the conduct of fresh congresses in the state.

He said: "There is no stay of execution. A stay of execution is not something that is secret. If anybody has one, he should show it to you.''(NAN)

Northern Elders, Afenifere, Ohaeneze Ndigbo, Pan Niger Delta Forum Are Selfish, Shedding Crocodile Tears On Security - Presidency

Posted: 20 Jul 2018 10:28 AM PDT

Northern Elders and President Buhari

The Presidency today reacted to the communique issued by leaders of some socio-cultural organisations led by the Northern Elders Forum, who questioned President Buhari's competence in handling the security situation in the country.

The Presidency described the leaders as selfish leaders who felt alienated after a transparent and accountable system "halted their disproportionate survival on resources of the state."

Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, in statement said, it considered the communique "as the shedding of crocodile tears by selfish leaders."

The Senior Special Assistant, therefore urged Nigerians to ignore what he described as the unholy alliance by the groups.

"The Presidency notes with dismay that the refrain about President Buhari not doing anything about security in the country had turned into the number one fake news item being peddled in the media.

"The Presidency refers all the purveyors of falsehood to a State House press release published a few days ago and signed by the Special Adviser to President, Femi Adesina, which clearly outlined the government's major achievements and initiatives in tackling security challenges from January to July, 2018.

"The press release which was titled: 'Combating Insecurity in the Country: Lest We Forget – Presidency' listed out ongoing security operations: (1) Nigerian Army's Exercise Ayem Akpatuma covering Benue, Taraba, Kogi, Nasarawa, Kaduna and Niger States launched in February to tackle cases of kidnappings, herdsmen/farmers' clashes, among others; (2) Nigerian Air Force establishment of three new Quick Response Wings (QRW) in Taraba, Nasarawa and Benue States respectively, and deployment of Special Forces personnel.

"The press release also noted President Buhari's approval for the establishment of a new Battalion of the Nigerian Army, as well as a new Police Area Command, in Birnin Gwari Local Council in Kaduna State, as part of measures to scale up security in response to the banditry affecting the area.

"We advise Nigerians to read Adesina's statement if they haven't yet, or re-read it for better understanding of the efforts to ensure peace in the country.

"It is sad and misleading for anyone to say that President Buhari had not responded to the security challenges in the country.

"No one can honestly say that President Buhari is doing nothing about security. It's just a fake news item being peddled by selfish politicians with vested interests in keeping Nigerians incensed, and it risks being entrenched as reality if we don't educate ourselves with the truth" he said.

Police Invite Dino Melaye, Over Sergeant Allegedly Shot By His Guard

Posted: 20 Jul 2018 08:52 AM PDT

Senator Dino Melaye has been invited by the Kogi State Police Command  to report at the State Criminal and Investigation Department after his armed guards allegedly fired on a team of policemen on patrol duties in the state.

According to the police, a Sergeant was the victim of the shooting, the police however said he is recuperating in the hospital.

The Kogi Police Command therefore has asked Melaye to report at the SCIID office in the state capital, in the company of his armed guards, as investigation began on the shooting.

DSP William Ovye Aya, the Command PRO, in a statement made available to the press, partly refuted Melaye's allegation that he was shot at by the police.

On the contrary, the police said that Melaye's guards opened fire first, with the police responding.

Senator Melaye in an Instagram post, did not mention any shooting incident. However, he claimed the police tried to block his convoy with a grader, parked on a bridge, while he was on his way to Yagba east to commission some projects. According to him, his convoy avoided the blockade.

The Senator representing Kogi West, in another Instagram post, said the state government barricaded the road to stop his movement.

It was on Twitter that the senator claimed an attempt was made on his life during the visit to his state.

He claimed over 20 bullets were fired at his jeep by a combination of policemen, men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and the military.
Dino Melaye
"I thank God for spearing(sic) my life once again. Over 20 bullets holes on my jeep. Combination of police,SARS and military. God I thank you.

In a statement by the Police, they contradicted Melaye's claims:

"Today, at about 1530hours, a team of policemen from the Command was on a routine Anti – Robbery/Kidnapping patrol along Aiyetoro Gbede – Mopa Road.

"During the patrol, and as it is often the practice, the team pinned down at a point at Iyah Gbede Junction, where they were observing the highway and occasionally conducting Stop and Search.

"It was in this process a long convoy of vehicles coming from Mopa towards Aiyetoro Gbede approached the Point. Officers of the Command at the Point flagged down the convoy. While the lead vehicle, a Toyota Hilux van, which was later discovered to be conveying officers of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, stopped to introduce themselves, other vehicles in the convoy dangerously zoomed off without regards to the safety of the officers on ground.

"Surprisingly, some plain clothed armed men, occupying a white Toyota Hilux van, without registration number, without provocation fired gunshots at the officers of the Anti-Robbery /Kidnapping Patrol Team.

"One of the officers, a Sergeant, was hit by bullet on the right part of his chest as a result of which he sustained grievous injury.

"The Officer is currently lying critically ill in the hospital where he has undergone a live threatening surgery and currently recuperating.

"Expectedly, the policemen in self defence responded by firing back to repel the unexpected attack. Vehicles in the convoy nevertheless, drove away from the scene. It was not until the officers of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps were questioned that it was realised that the convoy was that of Senator Dino Melaye.

"It is rather unfortunate that the Senator could after this dastardly act by his aides, be going around with armed men, unknown to the Command who could launch such a lethal attack on police officers in the course of their normal duty.

"It is more saddening that the Senator could turn around to issue misleading statements to cover up the heinous crime committed by his hired aides.

"While, the command has instituted a high powered investigation panel into the incident, Senator Melaye is hereby advised to report with people in his convoy to the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police, State Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department, Lokoja to assist in the investigation."

Ozekhome Pleads To Buhari To Release Dasuki

Posted: 20 Jul 2018 02:58 AM PDT

Col. Sambo Dasuki

Chief Mike Ozekhome SAN, Human Rights activist and constitutional Lawyer, has pleaded to President Muhammadu Buhari to release Col. Sambo Dasuki, the former National Security Adviser, to President Goodluck Jonathan, who has been granted bail six times by different courts.

This was contained  in a letter by Ozekhome to Buhari on Thursday tagged, "President Muhammadu Buhari, Please, Release Col. Sambo Dasuki in God's Name", insists Dasuki has not been convicted by any court of law to have warranted the long detention since December 2015.

Chief Ozekhome, in the letter, made references to the various bails including the one by ECOWAS Court, said a situation where government picks court order is dangerous.

The Human Rights Activist said;

"We are having the dangerous situation where this government picks and chooses which orders to obey or disobey, an anarchical situation.

"The same government has so far refused to obey several orders for the release of the Shittes leader, El-Zakzaki. This is clearly against constitutionalism and the Rule of Law."

The legal luminary further pleaded with the President to give Dasuki a lifeline by releasing him on bail.

"Mr President sir, in the name of almighty Allah, the Supreme God we all serve, let Dasuki go home on bail. Give him a breather. He has a family, friends and dependants to care for. He has not yet been convicted by any court of law.

"He is still presumed innocent under section 36 of the Nigerian Constitution.

"Give him a lifeline. Help us build strong institutions, not strong men. I appeal to you sir, on my bended kneels. Let the milk of human kindness flow in you. Seek ye not vengeance. Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but give place unto wrath; for it is written, vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord (Romans 12:19).

"The Rule of law doctrine theorises, amongst others, that: all people and institutions are subject to and accountable to law, the principle of government of law.

"The rule of law means that no person or government is above the law; that there is restriction of arbitrary exercise of power by subordinating it to well-defined and established laws. It means that no person however highly placed, is above the law, whether law makers, law enforcement officials, judges or persons in government".
