APC Has Disclosed How They Will Stop Saraki & Kwankwaso From Defecting To The PDP - 2019 Election In Focus

Posted: 21 Jul 2018 05:57 PM PDT

APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has revealed that they are confident that talks with Senate President, Bukola Saraki and former Governor of Kano State, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso will stop them from defecting to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

In an interview with Vanguard, Bolaji Abdullahi, the APC National Publicity Secretary, stated that the party was doing all prevent possible defections of his members to the opposition party PDP.

"I am sure you are aware of all the efforts being made, including at the level of Mr President. All these are indications of what is going on.

"So, the idea now is for everybody to rally as much as possible to prevent any defection. Meetings are going on and we believe that, at the end of the day, we will be able to persuade everybody to have faith in the party and to know that their interests will best be protected within the party. So, to us, we believe it is in our interest to keep as many people together as possible within the party.

"You also know that the National Chairman met with a former Governor of Kano state, Sen. Rabiu Kwankwaso. We believe that all these efforts that are being made will, in the end save the day for us," he said.

On the fear of continued marginalization of aggrieved stakeholders should President Muhammadu Buhari be voted in for second term, Abdullahi said: "Well, you will have to talk to the President's people regarding that. I mean I don't speak for the President.

"What I know is that the people involved are having meetings including the meetings with the President. And the President, like everyone knows, is a man of integrity, is an honourable man.

"So, if he agrees to anything, he will definitely abide by it. So, I think there is no question about that".

Oshiomhole Discloses Why PDP Wants To Boycott 2019 Elections

Posted: 21 Jul 2018 05:33 PM PDT

Adams Oshiomhole

Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has stated that the reason the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is planning to boycott the 2019 general elections is because they know the end of the party has come.

The APC National Chairman said this when the Chairman of the election committee in Osun State, Governor of Zamfara State, Abdulaziz Yari came to submit the Governorship primaries result.

Oshiomhole made it clear that nobody could threaten democracy in Nigeria.

"Let me also use this opportunity to comment on what I read. I saw the PDP chairman threatening that they may boycott the 2019 election.

"Now, when a rabbit, because I come from a village, when a rabbit in the afternoon jumps out of the hole not because the hunter has come to smoke it out and it is running, you know it has already seen its end.

"But the truth is that we are not desperate. We have worked hard to defeat PDP while they were in power, when they had no faction, when all the founding fathers and founding fathers were in the same house, we defeated them.

"Nigerian people rejected them on account of 16 years of absolute misrule at the peak of our prosperity as a nation when oil sold for $140 a barrel and we came in when oil price has dropped.

"If with all those huge revenue that accrued to them, people complained of bad roads whether from the south to the east, from the north to the west, they have nothing new to offer to the Nigerian people.

"So, I think they are hunted by their own ghost and because they had perpetuated a do-or-die politics and they are on record both electronic and print as saying that election matter is about do or die.

"One of their old man was recorded as saying that and they perfected the language of ring them out, let them go to court.

"Now, rigging machine has been dismantled and how can they survive without it? The glue that held them together which was cheap money from federal treasury, again, that has been cut off. What they already have like a typical village sheep, they may be chewing it all day, all night.

"You know in the day time, the sheep will go to grab every food they can get so that at night, it is chewing. Just reprocessing.

"It appeared they have almost finished digesting what they have taken and now they are worried about how they can sustain power and they are threatening," Oshiomhole said.

Adeosun’s Forged NYSC Certificate And Ayodele James’ Fake ICAN Certificate - The Untouchables?

Posted: 21 Jul 2018 03:36 PM PDT

Mrs Kemi Adeosun

The last has not been heard of the Finance Minister, Mrs Kemi Adeosun's NYSC alleged certificate forgery, as Daily Post examines between her issue and that of one Lebi-Ayodele James who was arrested for forging ICAN certificate and was arraigned before an Abuja High Court where he bag two years imprisonment.

Read the article by Farooq Kperogi of the Daily Post, published on 21st of July, 2018:

The reader is probably asking,"Who in the world is Ayodele James?" Well, Lebi-Ayodele James made headlines on July 13 when an Abuja High Court sentenced him to a two-year jail term-and asked him to refund N100,000 to the government in restitution-for forging an Institute of Chartered Accountant of Nigeria (ICAN) certificate, a coveted professional license for accountants.

He was convicted of "forgery of certificate contrary to section 25(1)(a) and punishable under section 25(1)(b) of the ICPC Act 2000 and being in possession of a forged document contrary to section 368 of the Penal code CAP 532, Laws of the FCT Nigeria 2006."He was also convicted of parlaying his forged ICAN certificate into getting a promotion at the office of the Auditor-General of the Federation.

This would have been an unremarkable, run-off-the-mill fraud case had it not come to light a little over a week after Premium Times reported that Finance Minister Kemi Adeosun forged an NYSC exemption certificate she isn't entitled to have, and for which she has faced no consequences. By Nigerian law, Adesoun has committed at least two offenses: failure to participate in the NYSC scheme after claiming her Nigerian citizenship (since she got her bachelor's degree before the age of 30) and forgery. She should also be prosecuted and thrown into jail like James.

James' ICAN certificate forgery and Adeosun's NYSC exemption certificate forgery bear many striking similarities. James owed his position as a "senior auditor" in the office of the Auditor-General of the Federation to his forged ICAN certificate. His degree, without ICAN certification, had earned him the position of an "executive officer" at the office.

Like James, Adeosun owes her current job to her forged NYSC exemption certificate since the act that established the NYSC says, "[…] it is illegal to hire a person who graduated but failed to make himself or herself available to serve, or falsify any document to the effect that he or she has served or exempted from serving." Although Adeosun was born in the UK, she is now a Nigerian citizen and is obligated by law to participate in the one-year national youth service scheme. It is the legal precondition for her previous and current employment in Nigeria.

The Abuja high court judge who sentenced James to two years in prison without an option of fine lamented that had James' forgery not been discovered, he could have risen to the position of Accountant-General of the Federation "in the nearest future."You would think the judge was visualizing the unthinkable.

But Adeosun forged an NYSC certificate "in the present," has willfully refused to acknowledge the forgery, and is still a minister. As I pointed out last week, a Louis Edozien whose credentials were found to be forged after an audit in 2014-and fired as a consequence-is now the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Works, Power and Housing, Nigeria's biggest ministry. And Okoi Obono-Obla, Chairman of the Special Presidential Investigative Panel for the Recovery of Property, was discovered to have fudged his WASC to gain admission to study law at the University. He hasn't lost his job. So the judge's lamentation about a bleak future he averted is insensitive to the blight of forgery in the present.

What has become clear in all of this is that in Buhari's Nigeria, justice isn't blind. Its blindfolds are off; it is a love-struck beholder of the president and people in the president's good graces. The "wrath" of justice is reserved only for the poor, the vulnerable, the uninfluential, and political opponents; in short everyone outside the orbit of the reigning power structure. It is unvarnished and unpretentious in its invidiousness and double standard.

But let this be known: No nation that punishes its poor and protects its powerful for the same offense can endure. Shehu Usman Dan Fodio was right when he said, "A kingdom can endure with unbelief, but it cannot endure with injustice." Before him, Aristotle said, "The only stable state is the one in which all men are equal before the law."

For every second that James remains in jail while Adeosun, Edozien, and Obono-Obla not only walk free but live off the fat of the land even when they committed the same offense as he, the very foundation of Nigeria chips off. A nation whose foundation comes off piecemeal as a result of blatant, in-your-face judicial double standard will sooner or later give way. That was what Frederick Douglass meant when he said, "Where justice is denied, where poverty is enforced, where ignorance prevails, and where any one class is made to feel that society is an organized conspiracy to oppress, rob and degrade them, neither persons nor property will be safe."

This government has adopted a policy of willfully pigheaded silenceand insouciance when it is confronted with momentously indefensible scandals. It hopes that the legendary collective amnesia and forgiving spirit of Nigerians where infractions concern people at the upper end of the social scale would conspire with its "silent treatment" strategy to cause the scandals to taper off.But this strategy will soon wear off and the pent-up anger people have been suppressing will burst forth. It's only a matter of time.

Either we have laws or we don't. There is no twilight zone. If the law no longer matters, let everyone who violated the law be free. Let James be free. Let no one go to jail or pay a fine for offenses for which other people don't even as much as get a slap on the wrist. If Buhari wants to run his government on the principles of lawlessness, he should codify this so that we would have no expectations.

In my August 6, 2016 column titled "Nigeria as a Perverse Anarchist Paradise," I pointed out that given the absence of government in people's everyday lives, "we might as well formalize anarchism… as our system of government" and concluded that "the stark, unsettling truth is that ordinary Nigerians have no need for government, and government has no reason to exist. The only reason government exists in Nigeria now, it would seem, is to supervise the dispensation of our national patrimony to the ruling elite and to pauperize an already traumatized and dispossessed citizenry."

This is now truer today than it was in 2016. Nevertheless, for as long as Nigeria makes pretense to having laws, henceforth, every certificate forgery that is punished with imprisonment will always remind Nigerians of government's criminal and hypocritical silence over the forgeries of Adeosun, Obono-Obla, Edozien, and other favored forgers.

‘Why Buhari Cannot Secure 10% Of Our Total Votes In Benue’

Posted: 21 Jul 2018 01:38 PM PDT

Muhammadu Buhari

Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State, has been in serious political dilemma in recent times and his subsequent announcement last week Monday receiving a red card from his party, the ruling APC'

In this article by the Vanguard, it  examines Ortom's situation and the probable scenarios that may play out.

Read as published by Vanguard Newspaper today, 21st of July, 2018.

Party branch at crossroads as Ortom controversy continues By Peter Duru, Makurdi Like a thunderbolt, Governor Samuel Ortom last Monday announced to the Benue public that his party, the All Progressives Congress, APC, had issued him a "red card" ahead of the coming 2019 general elections.

The Governor's pronunciation which literally meant that he has been booted out of the ruling party did not come to many as a surprise given the political power play that was witnessed in the state several weeks before that public declaration which was laced with inconceivable bravery.

Before the Governor's pronouncement, it had been in public domain that he was in a running battle with some powerful forces in the presidency who had been piqued by his decision and dogged determination to ensure the full implementation and enforcement of the now popular Benue grazing law which came into effect last November 1.

The law which was a product of the collective wishes and decision of the Benue people to stem the mindless killings in the state arising from the unending farmers/herders crisis had pitched governor and the people of the state against these forces who may have found willing friends within the state to have the law repealed or watered to suit their purpose.

Saturday Vanguard gathered that the unwavering stance of the governor to turn down the bidding of these forces against what he termed the uncharitable lashes from Senator George Akume, the leader of the party in the state, exposed him to what is now regarded as the battle for his political life.

Hence, before the pronouncement by the governor,   rumour mills had it that his party had already put machinery in motion to have him replaced as the party's gubernatorial flag-bearer in the coming elections.

While this plot was gaining grounds, the party at its last state congress in Makurdi gave the governor some form of false sense of security by endorsing him as the sole governorship candidate of the party probably with the intent to embarrass him by pulling the carpet from under his feet at the zero hour.

But Ortom, being a quick-witted politician of close to 35 years in the game beat them to the plot. He pulled the political trigger by announcing to the Benue people the machinations of his persecutors.

On that fateful day, the Governor shortly after swearing in his new Special Adviser on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs in Makurdi, urged the people to jettison their political, tribal and religious differences and work for the sustainable growth and development of the state.

Continuing he said, "As for party, I have been given red card and I'm outside the pitch. So, if I have been given red card and I'm standing outside, I'm a free man.

"So I don't know what will happen next but I'm waiting. If others approach me, then I will tell the Benue people that I'm joining another football club. I'm a child of destiny and it's only God that will decide what I will be."

From that date, the entire Benue political landscape was thrown into untold turmoil and the quack reverberated in all the political parties that have presence in the state with majority of them angling to have him berth at their dock.

The development has also left the state chapter of the APC in disarray with some of its state working committee members tendering their resignation from the party even as more are expected to follow suit.

Majority of the people of the state hailed the move of the governor, insisting that it was long overdue. Political pundits were also of the view that the decision was apt and timely given the people's ill feelings toward the ruling party arising from the indifference of the bigwigs of the party to the renewed Benue pogrom that dates back to January 1, 2018 which has claimed over 500 lives.

The people were further angered by the seeming weak reaction to the bloodbath caused by herdsmen in the region. Of note to Benue people is that the APC led federal government, at different times, laid the blame for the massacres on Benue people.

Hence it would have amounted to a political suicide if the governor remained in the party or sought reelection on that platform because fillers from across the state indicated that the people feel the APC led federal government turned the other way while defenseless Benue people were mindlessly massacred daily by armed herdsmen because the government is dominated by people of Fulani extraction. That is the feeling in Benue.

While the people wait anxiously for further pronouncements from the governor on his next political move not but a few pundits are of the firm belief that the next few days would witness a huge alignment and realignment of political forces in a state where political consciousness and awareness is over 80 percent.

Hold Oshiomhole & Masari Responsible If Anything Happens To Me – R-APC Chairman, Galadima Raises Alarm

Posted: 21 Jul 2018 08:57 AM PDT

Buba Galadima

Buba Galadima, Chairman of the Reformed All Progressives Congress (R-APC), has raised alarm in what he called a threat to his life, and asked Nigerians to hold the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole and their National Welfare Officer, Ibrahim Masari, responsible if anything happens to him.

Galadima disclosed this in an interview with Vanguard, where he claimed Oshiomhole is an "usurper", who was not among those who signed APC's Memorandum of Association.

He also made reference to statements made by Oshiomhole, where the former Edo Governor vowed to "crush" him".

"I have read the new national chairman say there are still PDP members in APC and they should go.

"Oshiomhole was not part of the APC. When we were signing the memorandum of association with other parties that formed the APC, Oshiomhole was not there. I didn't see his signature and I didn't see his face. I look at him as a usurper but I want to say; you know desperate people and drowning people can do anything.

"Adams Oshiomhole, the purported chairman of APC and Ibrahim Masari, the purported national welfare officer have made statements in the press, both in print and electronic media that they will crush me. That means that they can kill me.

"So, should anything happen to me, the nation and the world should hold them responsible. They can use state powers to detain me. They can use state powers to eliminate me. I want this to be on record and I want this recorded. To crush means anything.

"They have no confidence in themselves in engaging me in a public discourse for the world to know who is right and who is wrong. So, they want to use extra means to deal with me. I have the papers; I have the audio and the video," Galadima said.

Afenifere, Ohanaeze Slam Islamic Professor For Saying Middle Belt Belongs To Fulani

Posted: 21 Jul 2018 08:33 AM PDT

A controversial Kano based Islamic cleric, Prof. Umar Labdo Muhammad, has been slammed by Afenifere and Ohanaeze, prominent socio-cultural groups, for claiming that the Fulani dynasty owns the Middle Belt area of Nigeria.

Umar, is a Professor of Islamic Studies and Political Thoughts at Yusuf Maitama Sule University, Kano, in an interview with the Saturday Sun, claimed that the Fulani herdsmen have the right to graze in any part of the country unhindered.

He also said that the Middle Belt region belongs to the Fulani as it was earlier conquered by the Sokoto caliphate.

Reacting to his claims, the spokesman of Afenifere, Yinka Odumakin, said it was unreasonable for such a knowledgeable person to take that position.

He said:

"In this age and time, 2018, it is very unfortunate for somebody to be talking of cattle routes, grazing routes that should still be enforced. The same professor has sent his children to Ivy universities in America and Europe, and he is encouraging the children of other people to be dragging cows from Maiduguri to Akure and other places. Why can't he bring his own children to join the herdsmen.

"Modernity demands that these people build ranches and put in place facilities and be confined there, instead of moving cattle from one location to the other, and causing troubles. If he holds such views in this age and he calls himself a professor, it is unfortunate."

According to the Afenifere spokesman, Umar's position showed an imperialist agenda and a quest for domination and conquest, which should be resisted.

In a related development, the National Publicity Secretary of Ohanaeze, Uche Achi-Okpaga, noted that the position of the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation on cattle grazing has been unwavering, as it has declared that, there is no part of Igbo land that should be ceded in the guise of establishing a cattle ranch.

"Where on earth does it happen that you coerce people's heritage and give to an advertised adversaries?" Achi-Okpaga asked.

According to him:

"Ndigbo is passing through herculean crucibles under this regime and if this is another ploy to push us to the wall by unleashing the herdsmen on us, then we shall have no other option than to declare, to your tents oh Igbo".

He said:

"The South East Governors had obeyed our resolution by reaffirming it in their last meeting. Revisiting the concluded matter is tantamount to declaring war and civil unrest in the relatively peaceful Igbo land.

"It is needless going round the issue. Hitting the nail on the head is most apt in the prevailing circumstances. President Buhari is the one encouraging all these comments and killings in Nigeria.

"We are not running a parliamentary government. Here in Nigeria, it is presidential system where the president takes all the glory and, as well, the blames. A state government makes an anti-grazing law and a serving minister makes a public statement countering the existing law, which is accepted by the people it is meant to govern. It is not challenged in a court of competent jurisdiction and that minister is still enjoying the comfort of his office.

"Nigerians are killed in tens and hundreds in a staccato and unbridled brigandage and Prof Umar and the likes are making all these insinuating and untowardly statements.

"Why would people be making this kind of unlawful and thought provoking statements in this digital age to the effect that herdsmen should graze their cattle even in churches and mosques and kill all in resistance and he is not questioned? One can only construe that the government is heaping sand round their waists and the sky is now their limit in making inflammatory comments.

"Fulani herdsmen are killing people in the villages with jihadist embellishments and we are told to pray, while on each occasion the president assures that the perpetrators will be brought to book. No book has been seen neither has anyone's name seen on it."

British Government Chides Nigeria Over Buying Vote In Ekiti Election

Posted: 21 Jul 2018 05:06 AM PDT

Mr.Paul Arkwright

Ekiti State governorship election has received another knock over the issue of vote buying during the election. This time it is coming from the British Government who has frowned at the alleged vote-buying, which marred the just concluded Ekiti election.

Mr.Paul Arkwright, the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, described vote-buying as a form of electoral misconduct like rigging and ballot stuffing.

Arkwright, stated this while addressing journalists at the end of a meeting with the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, in Abuja on Friday.

The High Commissioner said,

"I was there in Ekiti to monitor elections and I heard a lot of reports of alleged vote buying and we are convinced that some vote buying went on. I condemn it. Vote buying is illegal; it is against the law, it is just as vote rigging, it is just as bad as ballot stuffing.

"We cannot make a distinction when all these activities are illegal so I condemn that. What are we going to do about it? Well we just had a meeting with the chairman of INEC, we have been talking about public awareness and how the political parties themselves can take responsibility for condemning this action and not continuing it.

"We do hope that 2019 will be free, fair, credible and of course, peaceful elections."

Mr.Arkwright, however, commended INEC for the conduct of elections in recent times, stating that the UK government seriouls had faith in INEC and its leadership.

He further stated;

"I think the election process itself went well, the materials were there, the security forces kept their distance and did manage to keep a peaceful election and we are seeing progress in how INEC is carrying out each election. So, we have confidence in INEC and the chairman.

"The UK has been a very strong supporter of INEC and together with the USAID, we are spending about $60m over a six-year period in support of deepening democracy in Nigeria."

In a releated development, while giving his remarks, the Department for International Development Secretary of State, Penny Maudaunt, advised security agencies to be neutral in conduct even as the 2019 general elections approached.

Maudaunt said;

"Though the elections were largely peaceful and results widely endorsed by stakeholders, vote buying by both the main political parties was widely criticised.

"There is time to tackle some of the challenges noted before next year's elections. But INEC will not be able to solve all electoral problems on its own. Everyone in society has a role to play and a contribution to make.

"Political parties must respect a code of conduct adhering to the highest standards. We encourage security agencies to remain visibly neutral and ensure a safe and secure environment for the electorate."

Police Give Reasons Why They Arrested Borno Guber Aspirant At Atiku‘s Event

Posted: 21 Jul 2018 04:25 AM PDT

CP Damian Chukwu

The Borno State Police Command on Friday said a governorship aspirant in Borno State, Alhaji Grema Terrab, was arrested over allegations of murder and inciting disturbances.

Recall that on Tuesday the report of the arrest of Alhaji Grema Terrab, by SARS personnel at an event attended by former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar was all over various media platforms.

However, according to the Commissioner of Police, in charge of Bornu State, Mr Damian Chukwu, in a statement obtained by NAN on Friday in Maiduguri, said the arrest was necessitated by the murder and other allegations against the politician.

CP Chukwu said;

"The command wishes to state categorically that while it is true that one Alhaji Grema Terrab has been arrested over his role in the offences of culpable homicide, inciting disturbances and sundry other offences, which occurred at his residence on 15th April, 2018, most of the claims in the report under reference are false in its entirety.

"It is worthy of note that Terrab, on 15th April, 2018, organised a political event at his residential quarters, contrary to security advice by the police.

"Expectedly, the meeting attracted large crowd of people. In the course of the event, and right inside his residential premises, one Maina Mustapha Babagana, a 20-year-old welder, was stabbed to death by persons present at the event," he said.

Chukwu explained that contrary to speculations, Terrab did not present himself to the police to report the incident.

He said that the politician also refused to honour series of invitations extended to him by the police, but went into hiding.

The commissioner added that the police subsequently declared the politician wanted after due processes.

According to him, the police evacuated the corpse at the politician's resident and invited those present at the scene of the crime for questioning.

Chukwu confirmed that Terrab was arrested by the police on July 17, during a political visit by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in Maiduguri.

He noted that the suspect had been charged to court, and assured of police commitment to be non-partisan, neutral, fair and just in the discharge of their duties.

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala Congratulated By Johnathan On Her Twitter Board Appointment

Posted: 21 Jul 2018 03:11 AM PDT

Dr Goodluck Jonathan and Dr. Ngozi Okonjo Iweala

The former President Goodluck Jonathan, has congratulated Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on her recent appointment into the board of Twitter. He said he is not surprised at the Finance expert's feats.

Dr. Goodluck Jonathan made this known through a post via his official Twitter handle and Facebook page.

See his tweet below

I am not surprised that Dr. Mrs. Ngozi Okonjo Iweala has been appointed into the board of Twitter. If anyone merits such an appointment, it is definitely a woman who helped her nation manage its finances most prudently and was instrumental to pulling many millions out of poverty. Ngozi, I am proud of you. You served Nigeria most meritoriously and I am more than certain that you would do the same at Twitter. Congratulations. GEJ.
