Gunmen

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Local Government Chairman, Mr Sunny Ejiagwu, has been killed by gunmen suspected to be hired assassins.

Ejiagwu who was the chairman of Ideato North Local Government of Imo State, was murdered on Friday morning, Channels Television reports.

The deceased APC Chairman, who was popularly known as Ohaneze, was one of the 27 LGAs chairmen inaugurated on Monday by the new state APC chairman, Daniel Nwafor, after the state APC rescheduled election as ordered by the court.

Dasuki Galandanchi, the Commissioner of Police, Imo State, confirmed that the politician was killed along the Akokwa road in the Ideato North LGA .

The CP said, "The APC chairman in Ideato North has been murdered. I was at the scene of the crime and only came back. His corpse has been evacuated to a mortuary.

''There is no preliminary suspicion but the investigator would find out. The blood of the innocent would expose them."

APC state chairman, Nwafor, briefing newsmen at the state party secretariat also condemned the killing of the chairman.

Nwafor said, "The killing is condemnable because APC preaches peace and political tolerance. People should practice politics without bitterness and violence.

''The constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria guarantees freedom of association.

''We, therefore, call on the Inspector General of police to press on the commissioner of police to nab the culprits. Imo is a peaceful state and an example of how politics should be played.

"The deceased was in our meeting on Thursday and he expressed concern about political violence in his area. He told us that his area is volatile and called on us to come to his rescue when the need arises.

"From the information made available to me, he was double-crossed and when he tried to move back, he fell into the gutter. His killers went there and shot him severely. "

Court Summons Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris Over Offa Robbery

Posted: 27 Jul 2018 11:18 AM PDT

IG Ibrahim Idris

The Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, has been summoned by an Ilorin High Court to appear before it by next week, Wednesday to explain the justification for the continued detention of Lekan Alabi, Personal Assistant to the Kwara State Governor Abdulfattah Ahmed, who was arrested over the April 5, 2018 armed robbery in Offa.

The summon followed protest by lead counsel to the suspect, Adelodun Ibrahim, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN).

He bemoaned the failure of the Police to release another suspect over the same incident, Alhaji Babatunde AbdulWahab, the Chief of Staff to the governor, who has been granted bail by another high court in the state.

Adelodun, leading four other lawyers, told newsmen after Thursday's proceeding that the refusal of the police to obey the court order on AbdulWahab was worrisome as it portends grave dangers to the deepening of democracy and might lead to a loss of confidence in the fairness of the police to handle such cases among the populace.

The police was not represented at the proceeding although Adelodun told the court they had been served all the processes relating to the case. The case was brought to Ilorin following the refusal of a Federal High court in Abuja to hear it as the alleged crime was committed in Kwara state.

Alabi has been in detention since May 28, 2018 and has not been arraigned before any court of law, a development his counsel, Adelodun, argued is in contravention of the provisions of Order 4, Rules 3 and 4 of the Fundamental Rights enforcement procedure rules (2009) as well as Sections 34, 35, 36, 37, 41 And 46 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

In his ruling, Justice Adebayo Yusuf said there was nothing in the constitution that allows the detention of a suspect without trial for a period beyond 24 hours where there is a court or 48 hours in environment where there is no court.

"The position of the law is as stated by the leaned silk, however I'm inclined to hear from the respondent to come to court and show cause why the applicant should not be released from their custody, since they have been served the motion on notice," the judge said, adding that it is clear that the police cannot change the constitution.

Adelodun, had while moving the application, pointed out that the detention of the applicant for 60 days without trial is a prima facie case of a breach of his rights to liberty as enshrined in section 35 (7) of the constitution and pointed out that Section 122 of the Evidence Act empowers the court to take judicial notice of the time involved in the exchange of written addresses and affidavit by parties which can compound the suffering of the applicant.

"We are not asking the court to declare our client guilty or innocent at this stage but the police has no right to keep a suspect forever", he said citing the decision of the Appeal Court in the case of EFCC vs Akingbola, (2015 NWLR p1470,pgh249,pp290) to buttress his submission," Adelodun said.

President Buhari

Buhari Support Group, Coordinator in Kwara State, Mashood Bakare, has formally resigned his appointment, ahead of the 2019 general elections.

According to media reports, Bakare, who announced his resignation on Thursday, at the floor of the House, represents Omupo Constituency in the State House of Assembly,

Mr. Bakare, according to Daily Nigerian, explained that his decision for his resignation was based on personal reasons.

He said he was no longer willing to be part of the organisation which he had been with since 2014.

The Kwara governor, Abdulfatah Ahmed had hinted that he and other top members of the state chapter, including the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, will soon dump the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The Governors said this in Ilorin, the state capital, during a meeting with youths, traders, local government chairmen among others.

Ahmed however lamented that the APC which was formed in 2014 with the hope of meeting the needs and aspirations of the people in critical areas of national life has not delivered it's promises.

"We are gathered here to consult with our supporters, market women, artisans, youths and women on how to guarantee our people's interest and our state's progress," he was quoted as saying.

"Our leader Senate President Bukola Saraki will soon come home to announce where we will go. APC has not met our expectations. You have told us that they have not met your aspirations as a people in APC.

"You have come to tell us that you want us to move on to a new platform that will give us room to meet our aspirations for the good of Kwarans. By the grace of God almighty, you will have a response very soon and very clear.

"But one is as clear as crystal you the stakeholders have told us to move out of the APC and because we run an inclusive process, that is why we have come to sit here and seek your opinion which you have expressed.

"And certainly your decision is our decision. So whatever you want is what we will do. God will guide us aright."State Chapter of Buhari Support Group, Mashood Bakare, has formally resigned his appointment, ahead of the 2019 general elections.

Shehu Sani Responds On Being Part Of Plot To Impeach Saraki

Posted: 27 Jul 2018 08:20 AM PDT

Senator Shehu Sani

Senator Shehu Sani, Senator Representing Kaduna Central at the National Assembly, has denied being among those allegedly plotting to impeach the Senate President, Bukola Saraki.

The lawmaker who described the reports as the handiwork of his enemies, added that he enjoys a good relationship with the Senate President and will continue to support him.

The Senator said the accusations leveled against him will not work, referring to it as "cheap blackmail."

Shehu in a statement on Thursday, said:

"My attention has been drawn to a report by an online newspaper without a defined address that I, Senator Shehu Sani and other senators plotted to impeach the senate president, Dr Bukola Saraki on Tuesday, 24th 2018.

"I'm not aware of such plot whether it happened or not. And If there was anything like that, it stands condemned. I can never be part of any plot to impeach the senate president because there was never reason to do so.

"I enjoyed a good working relationship with Dr Saraki since 2015 till date and he has always supported and identified with me in my moments of travails and trials and I reciprocated the same to him.

"He has managed the senate with experience, responsibility and maturity and always respects my views even when it differs with his. Fifthly, Senate President and Deputy Senate President Ike Ekwerenmadu have managed the Senate satisfactorily and championed and sustained its independence."

"My decision to remain in the APC or leave the party is my own choice to make in tandem with my conviction, conscience and the imperatives of the constituents and constituency I represent," he said.

"Fabrications, concoction and outright lies and blackmail aimed at me, to force me to toe a line against my conscience will not work. Using such cheap blackmail and character assassination against me will not work.

"I will continue to support the leadership of Dr Saraki and Dr Ike Ekweremadu till the end of the life of the eight senate. Once again, my choice of party is my business and not that of any person."

Dino Melaye Reportedly ‘Escapes’ From Abductors

Posted: 27 Jul 2018 02:27 AM PDT

Dino
Senator Dino Melaye

Dino Melaye,  Kogi West Senator, in the Red Chambers, ,has reportedly regained his 'Freedom' after he was abducted by unknown gunmen on Wednesday..

A lawyer to the lawmaker, Yemi Mohammed, on Thursday, said the senator was attacked at Gwagwalada on his way to Lokoja on Wednesday.

Mohammed, who represented Melaye's lead counsel, Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN), said this at a Senior Magistrate's Court in Lokoja, Kogi State where Melaye is facing charges of illegal possession of firearms and arms dealing.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, Mohammed told the court that he had it on good authority that Melaye was attacked in Gwagwalada on his way to Lokoja.

"I learnt that he was attacked yesterday (Wednesday) in Gwagwalada on his way to Lokoja to attend his trial and up till now, I have not been able to reach him, I don't know where he is at the moment,'' the lawyer said.

The magistrate, Sulyman Abdullah, adjourned the case till August 9 for the commencement of trial as the prosecution could not open its case due to the absence of its lead counsel, Dr Alex Izinyon (SAN).

The Officer in Charge of the Legal Department of the Kogi Command of the Nigeria Police, Mr Theophilus Oteme, told the court that Izinyon had an emergency call on Wednesday that made it impossible for him to appear in court on Thursday.

Oteme, therefore, applied for an adjournment until September 23 for the commencement of trial in view of the absence of the lead prosecutor. More so, one of the defendants, Melaye, was not in court.

In his ruling, Abdullah turned down the application by the prosecution for a long adjournment till September 23.

He said that the Kogi State Administration of Criminal Justice Law did not allow for an adjournment beyond two weeks in a criminal case.

The magistrate, therefore, adjourned the case till August 9 and ordered that the bail earlier granted to Melaye continued.

Abdullah, however, ruled that the other two accused persons, Nuhu Salihu, alias "small'', and Kabiru Seidu, also known as "Osama'', standing trial on a seven charges bordering on illegal possession of firearms and arms dealing, should remain remanded in the police custody.

Meanwhile, Senator Ben Murray-Bruce had on his Twitter handle earlier on Thursday alleged that Melaye was abducted in the Abaji area of the Federal Capital Territory.

Murray-Bruce said he was told that the lawmaker was blocked by some gunmen on the Abuja-Lokoja highway.

He tweeted: "I have just been informed by Moses Melaye, Dino Melaye's brother, that Dino has been abducted by unknown persons in a Toyota Sienna that blocked their car and overpowered them on their way to Kogi to answer to Dino's court case. Let's be on the watch out. Will keep you updated."

Melaye's telephone lines indicated that they had been switched off when several attempts were made to contact him by one of our correspondents. It was the same situation as of 8:20pm when this report was filed.

His Special Assistant on Media, Gideon Ayodele, also did not answer the several calls made to his telephone lines. He also did not reply a text message sent to him asking about the whereabouts of the lawmaker.

But a Melaye's family source, who spoke with one of our correspondents at about 8.30pm on Thursday, confirmed that the senator was free.

Another family source said, "He (Melaye) is getting better, as he managed to escape from his abductors."

But when contacted on Thursday night, Melaye's lawyer, Ozekhome, told one of our correspondents that he had only been in contact with the senator's brother while he also expressed hope of positivity.

"I am in touch with his brother. I believe all will be well," the senior lawyer said.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Police Force says it has not received any complaint or report in any of its divisions or stations throughout the Federal Capital Territory or any other state command about the kidnap of Melaye.

The police spokesman, Jimoh Moshood, a statement in Abuja, however, said they had commenced an investigation into the attack on the senator.

"The attention of the Police were drawn to the report of the purported kidnap of Senator Dino Melaye in some sections of the media. However, the Force has commenced an investigation into the purported kidnap of Senator Dino Melaye.

"We wish to implore any of his family members, relatives or friends who witnessed the kidnap or have information about the purported kidnap of the Senator to report the incident at the nearest police station to assist the police in the investigation.
