DSS Operatives Storm Ekiti School, Arrest Teachers Over PVC Collection

Posted: 03 Jul 2018 06:54 PM PDT

The Department of State Services, DSS operatives have reportedly raided a popular secondary school in Ekiti, Ola Oluwa Muslim Grammar School, and apprehended some members of staff.

According to report by the PunchNG, those arrested are the Secretary to the Principal, one Mrs. Olagbemi, and an Office Assistant, one Mrs. Ogunrinde.

They were arrested for allegedly collecting Permanent Voter Cards from teachers.

Mr. Sunmonu Olaoye, the Principal of Olaoluwa Muslim Grammar School, Ado-Ekiti, confirmed the arrest to journalists.
He narrated that the DSS officers came in some Hilux vehicles and right from the gate of the school, they started harassing people as if they were on a war mission.

"The DSS operatives were in black uniforms and also wore black masks and headed for my office. I wasn't in the office but I was on the premises to monitor the ongoing third term examinations. Some of my staff members were in my office making photocopies of their documents including their PVCs.

"I allowed them to make use of the school's facilities because I don't want anything to disrupt the ongoing examinations. The DSS people just swooped on the teachers, seized their documents including their PVCs and took away two members of staff. They also locked up my office and denied us access to examination materials we were to give to our students.

"I don't know when making photocopies of documents including PVCs became an offence. One of the operatives even called my number saying I must report in their office within an hour or I would be treated as a common criminal.

"We have 123 teachers in the school and the people are resolved on who they will vote for during the poll regardless of intimidation and harassment."

Olaoye calls for the release of those arrested because they did not commit any offence and that their documents including their PVCs should be returned to them.

"We are in a democracy and people reserve the right to vote the candidate of their choice. Harassing or intimidating people is not a democratic practice," he added.

'Nigerians Have More Electricity Than They Can Consume' - Garba Shehu

Posted: 03 Jul 2018 06:05 PM PDT

The Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, has said Nigerians have more electricity than they can consume.

Garba made this statement while speaking to journalists in Abuja on Monday.

The Special Adviser, said the current Federal Government is building infrastructure across the country, and every state has at least two federal roads currently in construction.

"We have more electricity that cannot be consumed, 2,000 megawatts of electricity that nobody is taking. By the year ending, we are going to hit 10,000 megawatts from the 2,600 that we inherited." he said.

He also said that the war against corruption led by the President was attracting lots of attacks from those who benefited from the old system of things.

"As I speak to you now, two former state governors are in jail; a lot of people thought that this war against corruption is a joke and that the back-and-forth that had characterized this over time, will continue," he said.

"One of the two cases was determined after 11 years of back-and-forth between lawyers and judges, kicking the ball from this court to that court. A lot of these harsh attacks against the President are coming from people who had become used to lifestyle they cannot sustain.

"On record, there were people in this country, because they are influential, they had permanent suites in major hotels in Abuja where they lived lavishly at the public's expense. And, when they are leaving, they are accompanied with bags of Ghana-Must-Go. They will continue to fight the president, but the happiness we have is that ordinary low-level Nigerians understand the huge conspiracy."

He then assured the public that the President would continue to develop the economy of the country despite these "attacks".

"Nigerians are with the President, the elite are going to places, America and the United Kingdom, and they are clicking in posh homes in Abuja, Lagos and some major cities in the country. They are trying to thwart the goodwill of the president towards the people. But this economy is being re-built; more foreign investment is coming, more infrastructure is being given to Nigerians and even the security infrastructure which had suffered neglect over the years is being given priority," he said.

Garba concluded by saying that no government in the past did as much for the military and the police as the current administration is doing.

Niger Delta Militants To Go After Herdsmen and Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders’ Association; If Nothing Is Done In 21 Days - Over Plateau Killings

Posted: 03 Jul 2018 04:49 PM PDT

The Federal Government of Nigeria has been given a 21-day notice to end killings in the country,  by a coalition of Niger Delta militants, yesterday.

According to media reports, the group is said to have lamented the recent killing by herdsmen in Plateau State.

Media sources have it that the militants, who met at Ikot Abasi, Akwa Ibom State during the weekend, also tasked the Federal Government on protection of lives and property of Nigerians.

The militants warned the Federal Government that there'll be doom if it failed to forestall anarchy and further bloodshed.

They declared a 21-day mourning period for those massacred recently in Plateau State by rampaging herdsmen, and threatened to declare herdsmen and Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders' Association enemies.

A statement by leader of the coalition, W.O I Izonebi, read:

"As agitators with conscience, we take lives of fellow Nigerians sacrosanct as no amount of provocation will lead to the slaughtering of innocent Nigerians because of cows.

"We, therefore, declare 21 days of mourning for the innocent Nigerians killed in Plateau State by foreigners trained by late Gaddafi that are now masquerading as herdsmen, according to our President, Muhammadu Buhari.

"We urge the government to do the needful before the expiration of our 21 days of mourning to avoid a total breakdown of law and order because it seems we do not have law, and government is unable to implement its primary responsibility of protecting lives and properties of its citizens.

"We demand implementation of the following to avoid doom and more loss of lives: The immediate devolution of power to states and regions to enable governors discharge their primary responsibility of protecting lives and properties and declaration and proscription of the Gaddafi mercenaries masquerading as herdsmen as a terrorist organisation.

"The government and security agencies saddled with the responsibility of protecting Nigeria and its territorial integrity should apprehend the perpetrators of this heinous crime against innocent Nigerians and humanity; total overhaul of the security organisation and security chiefs, immediate arrest of the Miyeti Allah Cattle Breeders Association leaders and its disbandment with immediate effect.

"We also condemn the inability of the government and securityagencies to protect its citizens from foreigners masquerading asherdsmen committing genocide in the Middle Belt of our dear nation, Nigeria.

"We are not going to fold our arms to see foreigners masquerading as herdsmen slaughter and kill hardworking Nigerians that are going about their legitimate businesses and livelihood anymore, when we have a democratically elected government in place.

"We are bold to ask these questions? What is the primary responsibility of government? Why is nobody being arrested and prosecuted for these killings? As agitators with conscience, we take lives of follow Nigerians sacrosanct as no amount of provocation will lead to the slaughtering of innocent Nigerians because of cows.

"We, therefore, warn that after this 21 days of mourning is over and nothing is done, we, the good people of the Niger Delta, and coalition of agitators will have no choice than to declare herdsmen and Miyeti Allah Cattle Breeders Association enemies of the Niger Delta and Nigerians in general.

"Therefore, we do not wish to see them in any of the Niger Delta states because the pollution and degradation of our farmlands and the polluted waters and rivers are enough provocation, let alone seeing our mothers and sisters in a life threatening situation and being killed by cattle breeders, while the Miyeti Allah is applauding them because they value the lives of cows more than human lives.

"Enough of this carnage going on, we should use this 21 days of mourning to reflect and ask the question, if we are truly a nation where the life of a cow is more valuable than human life."

French President Macron Meets Buhari In Abuja

Posted: 03 Jul 2018 12:33 PM PDT

French President Emmanuel Macron, has arrived Abuja in a Presidential aircraft Airbus 330.

President Macron touched down at the Presidential Wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, at 3:10pm.

He was earlier expected to arrive at 2:30pm, but the arrival was delayed by an hour.

The French President was received by the Nigerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Geoffrey Onyeama; Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Muhammad Musa Bello; French Ambassador to Nigeria, Denys Gauer and top Nigerian government officials.

Onyeama said, while in Nigeria, President Macron would focus primarily on security and economy.
The meeting is part of efforts to forge closer ties with English-speaking Africa.
Macron, a 40-year-old former investment banker who speaks fluent English, has made a point of boosting ties with France's former colonies but also improving trade with anglophone countries.

Later today, he will also visit Lagos State where the state government has planned to host him at the New Afrika Shrine founded by Femi Kuti, son of music legend, Fela Kuti – making him the first president to enter the venue.
The New Afrika Shrine located at Ikeja Lagos was built after the original Shrine by the musical maverick, Fela was burnt down in 1977.

In Lagos, the agenda will be less traditionally diplomatic, with a focus more on the megacity of 20 million people's artistic and cultural scene.
The French President is expected to officially launch the African Cultural Season which takes place in France in 2020, at an event showcasing music, fashion and theatre.

The choice of location — the Shrine concert venue of Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti — has come as a surprise for many Nigerians given its association with the anti-establishment musician.

"It's a pleasant surprise that Macron chose to celebrate the cultural scene in Lagos," said Steve Ayorinde, Lagos state tourism commissioner.

"But it didn't come as a shock, knowing that France is a very cultural country and knowing that Macron is a young president."

Meanwhile, the Lagos State Government has announced that there would be traffic diversion and restricted movement from 12 noon to 12 midnight on Tuesday around the Alausa, Afrika Shrine/Agidingbi axis.

"I Could Finish 2 Cartons Of Beer In A Day'' - Ifeoma Okeke Purple Campaign Founder

Posted: 03 Jul 2018 05:06 AM PDT

Ifeoma Okeke, Nollywood actress and Founder of the Purple Campaign has revealed why she is still not married, in a chat recently with Dupe Ayinla Olasunkanmi.

She also revealed to Dupe that there was a time she could finish two cartons of beer a day as a result of depression.

Read what she disclosed to Dupe below:

"I think I answered this same question some years back and I would not want it to be the topic of this interview. My foundation, Purple Campaign was given birth to out of a violent relationship I was in years back. I was in the relationship for three years, and the only Igbo guy I had dated. So with a new relationship, I tolerated those things I never had to put up with in the past ones.

Even if I am called that he is seen with someone, I will pretend to be in the know. I felt I had seen my husband. One thing I had said to myself was that I would never leave my man because he cheats. So I think he took that advantage knowing I was never going to leave. So the moment I started complaining, we started having issues and he battered me. In fact, sometimes I never believed the things he beat me up for. And it continued; it kept lingering and I was asking myself if I would leave if I was married.

One day, he had stopped beating me and we had reconciled. But on May 26, 2008, I looked at one of my beautiful pictures before dating him and compared it to the lady standing in front of the mirror and they were two opposites. I was looking like a widow; I was bigger and fading away. I started indulging in beer. I could finish two cartons in a day; nobody knew what I was going through.
Depression is real, you can hurt people by words and they will be dying silently. My birthday came, and I called a friend that I wanted something different aside just celebrating with friends, and she told me about a lady who was raped at nine and it continued and how this had affected her adulthood. I thought about it and wanted a colour to represent the idea, so I went on the internet and came about purple, which stands for the two things; violence and royalty.

That was how the idea of Purple Campaign started. And for me, there was no looking back. I want to be married and loved. I know I have my flaws. After that relationship, I tolerate less; I know I can be temperamental. But when someone loves you for your flaws, the good parts will complement. I know there is a good part of me. I haven't seen that man, and I know he is out there. There is no hurry in life."

Lagos State Government To Prosecute Owner And Driver Of The Otedola Bridge Tanker Incident

Posted: 03 Jul 2018 03:20 AM PDT

Following the unfortunate incident of the fuel laden tanker which exploded on Otedola Bridge inward Ojodu Berger along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, on Thursday last week, the Lagos State Government is concluding plans to prosecute the owner and driver of the tanker; the State's Commissioner of Police, Mr. Imohimi Edgal said on Monday.

Prior to this, the State's Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Adeniji Kazeem had at the weekend written to the CP to advise him on the relevant provisions of the law that could guide the ongoing investigation which would lead to possible prosecution.

Confirming receipt of the letter while briefing Government House Correspondents after the Security Council Meeting chaired by Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, Edgal said investigations into the incident were ongoing, saying that government would not allow vehicles that pose serious danger to residents on the road.

CP Edgal, who briefed journalists alongside heads of other security agencies in the State, specifically commiserated with those who lost their loved ones to the tragic incident, while also commending emergency responders who quickly raced to the scene to keep the causality figure low.

"As regards investigation into the matter, it is in top gear. I have just received a letter from the office of the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice which stated very clearly charges which we are going to prefer against the driver and the owner of that tanker.

"Henceforth, we are using this opportunity to call on all tanker drivers, all lorry drivers, all owners of such articulated vehicles to please submit those vehicles for Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) test; they must go through the entire hub and get the Ministry of Transportation (MOT) Certificate of Road Worthiness. We will not allow such vehicles which obviously pose serious danger to other road users on our roads," Edgal said.

The CP however said government had already directed security agencies to intensify enforcement of relevant laws, especially the State Traffic Law, with the view to ensuring that the roads and highways in the State were safe for commuters to ply without any danger.

Mr.Edgal also urged residents to always refrain from converging on the scene of any accident of such magnitude as that of the unfortunate tanker fire incident, saying there could be secondary explosion which could lead to loss of lives.

nPDP Set To Defect To PDP This Week

Posted: 03 Jul 2018 02:44 AM PDT

Saraki

The nPDP members comprises of those who left the PDP to the APC. The members had protested of marginalisation in the ruling APC and from all indications, the issue has not been resolved as new speculation on the news that the members are set to go back to the PDP this week.

However whether the speculation will turnout to be a true story, time will tell. See below an article from the New Telegraph Newspaper.

As published by the New Telegraph newspaper:

Baring any change in plan, former members of the Peoples Democratic Party (nPDP) may likely leave the All Progressives Congress (APC) before Thursday this week.

Leader of the group, Alhaji Kawu Baraje, had, in a statement on Sunday, said the group would announce its next political move before the end of this week.

But a PDP source disclosed that the party is expecting a declaration from the group before Thursday this week.

The nPDP had, in a letter dated April 27, accused the APC leadership and President Muhammadu Buhari of sidelining, harassing, intimidating and victimising its members.

Since then, the group had met with Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo and the APC leadership, but Buhari has refused to discuss with them.

The PDP source told New Telegraph that the group had perfected plan to leave APC on June 23, the date of the party's national convention, but for disagreement between the members.

"The plan was to address a press conference that day and announce their movement en masse to PDP, but there was a security report. The thing leaked and they had to put the plan on hold.

"They could also not agree to move that day. Some of them wanted it delayed but people like (Senator Musa) Kwankwaso said 'no!'" the source explained.

Kwankwaso visited Atiku Abubakar on the night of APC convention in what the former vice president's media office explained as a Sallah visit.

Senator Dino Melaye also stayed away from the convention.

The former Kano State governor, over the weekend, declared that he would help PDP beat Buhari in 2019, though he has not formally declared for the party.

The source, however, disclosed that a glitch in the group's movement might be the expected judgement on the President of Senate, Dr. Bukola Saraki, coming up on July 16.

"We were thinking that it (the defection) will be delayed until after the judgement. But going by Baraje's statement, it may be soon than expected," he said.

PDP has set up a contact and mobilisation committee headed by former Cross River State governor, Senator Liyel Imoke, which is yet to submit its report to the party leadership.

It was believed that the delay is in connection with the discussions with new members expected to join the party.
