#FreeSamuelOgundipe - Bukola Saraki’s Spokesman Speaks About Premium Times’ Reporter’s Arrest

Posted: 16 Aug 2018 07:51 PM PDT

Samuel Ogundipe - Premium Times Journalist, Held By Police

The Special Adviser on Media to Senate President, Bukola Saraki, Mr. Yusuf Olaniyonu, has stated that the continued detention of Premium Times' journalist, Samuel Ogundipe, is an affront on the fourth estate of the realm and an assault on freedom of the press, freedom of speech and due process.

According to the Daily Post, Mr. Olaniyonu, a former Editor and Editorial Board Chairman with THISDAY newspapers, in a statement released on Thursday, reiterated that freedom of speech and due process must be adhered to in Ogundipe's case, stating that journalists must be free to practice their profession without fear of intimidation by security Agencies.

See protesters at Police HQR yesterday:

"As a journalist and media professional, I find it preposterous that Mr. Ogundipe has been held without recourse to due process for more than 48hours

"This is a democracy and even when it hurts, journalists must be free to write their truthful stories and protect their sources without the fear of being picked up and tried secretly.

"It is a settled issue in our jurisprudence that a journalist cannot be compelled to disclose the source of his or her information.

"In cases like Tony Momoh versus Senate, Ray Ekpu Vs IGP and many others, our courts have decided that the journalist cannot be compelled to reveal the source of his story.

"I want the world to know that, I and my colleagues in this profession will continue to stand alongside Samuel Ogundipe. We will continue to speak up for him and demand his immediate and unconditional release.

"We will also continue to demand that due process must be followed and freedom of speech and that of the press must be protected," the journalist-turned-media aide added.

Another PDP Senator Decamps To APC

Posted: 16 Aug 2018 06:21 PM PDT

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has made another big catch from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), this time in Enugu State.

Senator Ayogu Eze, a former Senator and (PDP) governorship aspirant in 2015 elections, has defected from the PDP to the APC.

Daily Sun has reported  that Eze, a two-time senator, had engaged in intensive consultation with political associates, stakeholders in Enugu and APC before defecting to the ruling party.

According to the report, he has been registered as a member of the APC in his ward, and that a planned grand reception is being prepared to formally welcome him into the party.

Senator Eze's membership of the APC caused wild jubilation in the party, as members see him as a strong force in Enugu, especially as they believe that his entry will give a push to the campaign to dislodge the PDP in Enugu State.

Political watchers say Eze's entry will alter political calculations in the state ahead of 2019 general election.

Associates of the Senator told our reporters that it took a lot on their part to convince him to switch loyalty to the APC, arguing that their selling point was emphasis on the need to take Enugu State back to the mainstream of Nigerian politics as a way of ending the cry of marginalisation by the people.

The report further stated that the former Senator is joining other notable sons of Enugu, like former governor of old Anambra State, Chief Jim Nwobodo; former governor of Enugu State, Sullivan Chime; former Senate President, Chief Ken Nnamani and many others, who have decamped from PDP to APC.

Senator Eze confirmed joining the APC, when contacted by the Daily Sun yesterday.

APC Lawmaker In Niger State Dumps Party

Posted: 16 Aug 2018 03:01 AM PDT

APC and PDP

Alhaji Danladi Iyah, a Lawmaker in the Niger State House of Assembly, has resigned his membership of the All Progressives Congress APC.

His resignation has started fueling speculations that the strong wind of defections from the ruling party will soon hit the house.

As at the time of this report, Alhaji Danladi Iyah has not disclosed what party he was going to join.

The Lawmaker addressed his resignation to the state chairman of the party, Alhaji Jibrin Imam, in which he said the reason for leaving the APC was  "humiliation and due to hostilities I suffered while I was in the APC".

Iyah was elected on the platform of the APC from Tafa constituency. The house had before the resignation of Iyah 26 APC members and one PDP.

According to ThisDay, the APC in a swift reaction, wrote to the Assembly demanding that the legislator's seat should be declared vacant.

"I want the House of Assembly to effect the provisions of section 109 sub section 1(g) of the Nigerian constitution and declare the seat of the member representing Tafa Constituency vacant. His reasons are not justifiable." Imam said in the letter.

According to the chairman's letter, the reason given by the legislator was not tenable as it was personal and not constitutional.

When the APC chairman's letter was read at plenary on Wednesday, member representing Borgu Constituency, Alhaji Bala Ahmed Abba, threw his weight behind the chairman's letter saying that the resignation of his colleague was unconstitutional.

Abba said "declaring his (Iyah) seat vacant is the right thing to do."

Member representing Bida 1 Alhaji Mohammed Haruna seconded the motion.

When the motion was put to vote, the members unanimously agreed that the legislator's seat should be declared vacant.

The speaker Alhaji Ahmed Marafa Guni directed the clerk of the Assembly to convey the decision to the Lawmaker.

Saraki Given Conditions By Oshiomhole That Will Save Him From Impeachment

Posted: 16 Aug 2018 02:41 AM PDT

Oshiomole_1
Adams Oshiomhole

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, has said to the Senate President Bukola Saraki, that the only way he can avoid impeachment is if he resigns.

The National Chairman of the Party, said this to the Senators and members of the House of Representatives elected on the platform of the APC, in Abuja on Tuesday, during a meeting with them.

Oshiomhole further stated that Saraki, is now a member of the minority party in the Senate, following his defection to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

In his words;

"Democracy teaches us that minority has the right to have their say but majority must have their way. So, if we have 56 senators and they have 49 senators, I insist that 49 senators cannot preside over the affairs of a House in which APC has 56 senators. And I ask them to tell us anywhere in the world where minority rules over majority.

READ ALSO: 'You Should Be Ashamed Of Indicting Buhari' - Misau Mocks Presidency, APC

"Often times, we take flights to Washington and other places to understudy the American presidential system of government. Once you lose majority, without further ado, you step down.

"Over and above all of these stories about illegal impeachment, let me restate that we cannot be subjected to minority rule in the Nigerian Senate and therefore, whether it is convenient for Distinguished Senator Saraki or not, the truth is whether by morality or by law or by convention, Saraki can only avoid impeachment by toeing the path of honour, step down so that APC can take over the leadership of the Senate.

"So, I want to repeat, Saraki as President of the Senate will be lawfully and democratically impeached. It will not be illegally done. It will be done according to law and tradition.

"Those lawyers who have chosen to sit as judges, need to be reminded that lawyers are at best, officers of the court and do not constitute the court. So, when Saraki is lawfully and democratically impeached, they will be free to go to anywhere they want to go and canvass the legality or the illegality of the action. It is not in their place to pronounce with finality as if they constitute the judicial arm of government," Oshiomhole added.
