Reasons Nigeria Should Adopt Single Term For Governors And President – Ekweremadu

Posted: 22 Aug 2018 07:50 PM PDT

Senator Ike Ekweremadu

Senator Ike Ekweremadu, Deputy Senate president, has urged Nigerians to reconsider single term for governors and president.

Via a Facebook post on Wednesday, Ekweremadu said with the 2019 elections in focus, politicians are doing all they can to get into power or remain in power. He noted that as a result, governance is at the receiving end.

Ekweremadu believes that a single term of 5 or 6 years for governors and president will reduce the political tension that accompanies elections.

According to the deputy Senate President, some countries in South America practiced it before, when they were faced with similar situation as Nigeria.

Ekweremadu further said that many of those countries, transitioned from military and autocratic regimes and their democracies became threatened  with incumbents overheating the polity with their desire to perpetuate themselves in power.

READ ALSO: Tinubu Breaks Silence On Defections, Says APC Will Be Better Without Saraki And Tambuwal

Senator Ekweremadu wrote:

"As is always the case, Nigeria's political atmosphere is getting toxic ahead of the 2019 general election and governance is taking a backseat.

Unfortunately, this atmosphere, with the accompanying brazen political excesses, are unlikely to abate until well after the 2019 general election."

"Unable to resist the temptations that come with enormous power of incumbency, those who call the shots today, throw everything within their reach into the mix in desperate efforts to retain power at all cost and by all means. The feverish political climate in the country today, once again, justifies the call by some of us for a single term of five or six years for the president and governors.

"Although a renewable four-year term is popular, societies are dynamic and it is up to us to make necessary constitutional adjustments to safeguard our democracy and make periods leading up to our elections less toxic.

"In the 1970s, many Latin American democracies faced the same challenges we face in Nigeria today. As many of them transited from military and autocratic regimes to democratic regimes, they discovered that the politics of succession, including incumbents' penchant for self-perpetuation, overheated their polities and threatened their democracies.

"They adopted the single term presidency until such a time their respective democracies matured and stabilised. Although virtually all of them have reverted to two-term presidency, Mexico still practices single term presidency, called Sexino. She also retained the Sexino in the 2014 constitution amendment.

"In Nigeria's case we proposed a single term for the president and governors with several transitional options during the constitution amendment exercise in the seventh national assembly. Unfortunately, it was misunderstood by various political and sectional interests for various reasons and the proposal did not succeed.

"However, I strongly believe a single term of five or six years for president and governors, even if for a stipulated period as was the case with several Latin American democracies, is something Nigerians should revisit after the 2019 general election."

Miyetti Allah Leadership Reacts To Threat On Saraki - Says Gololo's Statement Unfortunate

Posted: 22 Aug 2018 05:06 PM PDT

Saraki
Dr. Bukola Saraki

Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), National leadership has reacted to the threat on the Senate Presisent, Bukola Saraki.

A Benue Coordinator of the association, had stated that Saraki would be forced out of office if he refused to resign his position immediately. Alhaji Garus Gololo, gave the warning in Makurdi, the State capital Tuesday.

Gololo claimed that Saraki had created numerous problems for the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.

In a twist of events, Baba Uthman Ngelzarma, MACBAN National Secretary, while reacting, described the statement as unfortunate.

According to a statement by Ngelzarma on Wednesday read:

"I will categorically state that Garos Gololo spoke in his personal capacity and has no mandate to speak on behalf of the association.

"Miyetti Allah is a non partisan association with no interest in the political terrain and we couldn't meddle into the affairs of political actors thereby compounding our already obvious challenges. I therefore urge all and sundry to disregard this statement.

"This statement is not from MACBAN and should be disregarded in its entirety. We take exception on this statement and Garos Gololo is entirely on his own and will be sanctioned accordingly.

"We cannot afford to add up to the many challenges we are confronted with. I'm therefore appealing to the general public to disregard this statement as it is coming from someone who doesn't have the mandate of the association to speak on its behalf."

Voice Of Nigeria DG, Osita Okechukwu Daydreaming - Ekweremadu’s Aide

Posted: 22 Aug 2018 05:05 PM PDT

Ike Ekweremadu

Mr. Luke Ngbor, aide to the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, has described the Director General of the Voice of Nigeria (VON), Osita Okechukwu, as a joker.

This came after Okechukwu vowed to retire Ekweremadu from politics.

According to the aide, the VON-DG had said he would be contesting tthe sit for Enugu West Senatorial District, an office currently being occupied by Ekweremadu.

Okechukwu had in a statement, asked his party members in the district to support his ambition, adding that he would retire Ekweremadu from the Senate.

"My dear APC compatriots, may I seek your endorsement to retire Ike Ekweremadu from the Senate. I pledge to give the good people of Enugu West Senatorial District the following service – selfless, revamp Enugu coal, eastern corridor railway and cassava and rice settlement," he said.

However Ngbor in a swift response, said Okechukwu was daydreaming as the APC has no place in the South-East.

READ ALSOThey Approached Me To Agree To Replace Ekweremadu - Abaribe Discloses

"I want to put it categorically that APC has no place in South East. Recently if you recall, my brother Osita Okechukwu accepted that APC has no place in South East when he lambasted Imo State governor, His excellency Rochas Okorocha and claimed that because of governor's activities in Imo, that APC will fail in South East.

"That is why I am letting you know that APC has no place in South East. Even Osita has us to contend with in Eke ward. Osita is an Abuja politician that doesn't know anybody at the grassroots. Over the years, we had election in our ward and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP has always come out victoriously with a flying colour.

"But beyond that, let me draw your attention to the fact that that as I speak to you, in Eke ward that APC has two factional chairman and I wonder how Okechukwu will get nomination in the first place not to talk of getting nomination for the party in Enugu west.

"PDP is on ground and we know that our people are PDP. They support and will vote for PDP.

" My brother Okechukwu cannot retire anybody; It's an over statement to say that he will retire any man from politics. Man by nature is a political animal and nobody can retire any human being from politics.

"Apart from himself, there is another major stakeholder in APC at Eke ward, Minister of foreign affairs, I am still wondering how he is going to get nomination to represent his party in the first place not to talk of contending with the PDP, which is where I belong.

"Lastly, I want to bring your attention that there is great different between being a politician and being a propagandists.a

"He has me to contend with in Eke ward, which I can assure you that I will defeat him hands down before before we go to Udi LG and of course other four LGAs in Enugu west.

"Talking of retiring anybody, I think is another dream. We have 81 wards in Enugu West senatorial district, which Eke ward is just one ward. So it's dream which I know will never work out for now. Let him first contend with me and see if he will defeat me in Eke ward before going to Udi, not to talk of Enugu west zone. Let him go back first and start building bridge for him to cross the bridge," Ngbor stated.

PDP Ask Buhari To Arrest Miyetti Allah Leaders Within 24 Hours

Posted: 22 Aug 2018 09:59 AM PDT

President Buhari

The major opposition party in Nigeria, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has on Wednesday given President Muhammadu Buhari "24 hours to arrest leaders" of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association, MACBAN.

The PDP stated that should President Muhammadu Buhari fail to order the arrest of MACBAN leaders and commence their prosecution, Nigerians will hold him responsible for the actions of the group, henceforth.

The party said this while responding to MACBAN's threat that the Senate President, Bukola Saraki should resign his position or be forced out.

According to the Daily Post report, the PDP, while describing MACBAN as an "agent of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and agents of the Buhari Presidency", stated that the threat against Saraki was "ominous and revealing."

READ ALSOResign Or We Will Force You Out - Miyetti Allah Tell Senate President

A statement by Kola Ologbondiyan, PDP's spokesperson, said the threat has allegedly exposed the alleged synergy between APC and MACBAN.

The PDP spokesperson's statement reads:

"If anything, this unguarded statement by Miyetti Allah has exposed the synergy between the ruling party and some troublesome elements, who are being used to stoke division and create violent crisis that had resulted into daily bloodlettings in various parts of the country.

"It is now abundantly clear to Nigerians that those fomenting crisis, including the bloody clashes in Benue, Taraba, Zamfara, Nassarawa, Plateau, Kaduna, Edo, Borno, Yobe, Enugu, Kogi, Adamawa and other states
in our country, have political backers, who now want to channel them to achieve their unpatriotic quest to subvert our constitution and forcefully take over the National Assembly.

"Before now, to majority of Nigerians, the Miyetti Allah has always represented the military wing of the APC and the Buhari Presidency. It is incontrovertible that they have now become the fourth arm of government that can determine when and how to forcefully remove the
number three citizen, the President of the Senate.

"It is common knowledge that Mr. President has come under heavy public criticisms on how his body language has condoned the unguarded utterances and actions of these characters.

"However, in the light of these treasonable and inciting utterances by Miyetti Allah, we demand that President Muhammadu Buhari, should within the next 24 hours, order the arrest and commence immediate trial of the
leadership of this group, otherwise Nigerians will henceforth hold him directly responsible for the utterances and actions of the Miyetti
Allah.

"Finally, the PDP is aware that Miyetti Allah does not represent the views and interests of the vast majority of cattle breeders or even any ethnic group in the country. We therefore urge all good spirited Nigerians to rise in condemnation of the actions and utterances of these misguided elements, who are being used to attempt a constitutional breach that portends grave danger to national cohesion and our hard earned democracy."

Saraki Fight Back At Buhari Media Organisation

Posted: 22 Aug 2018 09:23 AM PDT

Dr. Bukola Saraki
Dr. Bukola Saraki, the Senate President on Sunday responded to a statement credited to President Muhammadu Buhari's Media Organisation, where the Organisation cautioned and urged him to reconvene the Senate to attend to urgent National issues.

The President Muhammadu Buhari's Media Organisation, accused the Senate President of postponing the resumption of the Senate, despite the ongoing issue in the country, especially the INEC budget and approval for foreign loans tied to several critical infrastructures.

It could be realled that the chairman Niyi Akinsiju and Secretary Cassidy Madueke of the organisation, said that Saraki is the one holding the whole nation to siege, by using his position to undermine the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.

In a swift response to statements of both the chairman and secretary of the President Muhammadu Buhari's Media Organisation, the Senate President through his Special Assistant on new media, Olu Onemola said that the organisation's statement was a careful and deliberate example of conscientious ignorance on full display.

Below is the full statement:

"It is necessary to begin this response to the Buhari Media Organization by reminding us of the aforementioned fact. This is because their statement is a careful and deliberate example of conscientious ignorance on full display.

By now, the Nigerian people are aware that the Executive branch could have submitted INEC's 2019 Election budget at the time it submitted the 2018 appropriations proposal last year. Furthermore, the Executive had from January till June this year to submit the budget request.

However, due to a lack of foresight, or the usual display of tardiness or an attempt to ensure that due process would not be followed — the INEC budget request was submitted by the Executive branch only a few days before the statutory National Assembly annual recess.

Regardless of this unforced error on the part of the Executive, the National Assembly has continued its work on this budget. As it stands: the relevant Senate & House Committees have held individual budgetary hearings with the INEC Chairman & all his Commissioners on this budget.

The @NGRSenate and @HouseNGR have also held follow-up Joint Committee meetings to carefully scrutinize the provisions of the budget. Furthermore, the Joint Committees are now scheduled to meet on Monday when they are expected to come up with a Committee report.

This Report will then be given to the Appropriations Committee, which will spell out how to source the President's virement request through the concerned MDAs. Any person or organization that is conversant with legislative due process would know this.

It is only after the Appropriations Committee has worked on the budget details that a plenary sitting is required to adopt the final report.

The Senate President, the Senate and the entire National Assembly, are committed to ensuring that the 2019 elections receive all necessary funding. However, this should not be at the expense of due process and stated guidelines.

Groups like the Buhari Media Organization that try to scapegoat the Senate President for the failure of the Executive to submit INEC's 2019 election budget on time, know that the National Assembly has been working on this request through its Committees.

Nigerians want to know why President Buhari withheld his assent on the first Electoral Act passed by the National Assembly to help legalize the various innovations that are needed for free and fair elections. These are the questions @BuhariMediaORG should ask their principal.

@BuhariMediaORG should ask their principal the following questions:

"What is he afraid of in the very progressive proposals contained in the Electoral Bill?"

"Why does he want to frustrate the 2019 election by not signing the much-needed enabling laws into effect?"

For the record, it is necessary to state that the Buhari Media Organization (@BuhariMediaORG), in its failed attempt to mislead the public, has been crying more than the bereaved.

During this process, INEC, that will utilize the funds and conduct the proposed elections has stated that it is confident and comfortable with the thorough and transparent response exhibited by the National Assembly.

Finally, it is necessary to once again emphasize that the public will continue to see through all attempts to mislead them with empty political grandstanding that is detrimental to the adherence to due process that the National Assembly's leadership is committed to upholding."

North Will Not Let You Succeed Buhari, You Are Daydreaming – Adebanjo Tell Tinubu

Posted: 22 Aug 2018 07:06 AM PDT

Chief Ayo Adebanjo

Chief Ayo Adebanjo, Afenifere chieftain,  has said that the  National Leader of All Progressives Congress, APC, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu must be naive to think that the North will allow him to succeed Buhari in 2023.

The Afenifere Chieftain, further called on the people of the South-West not to allow themselves to be fooled by Tinubu a second time.

According to a report by the Punch Newspaper, Adebanjo was quoted: "Tinubu is daydreaming if he thinks the North will ever support his presidential ambition. We have our principles,"

"We are not supporting Buhari under any circumstance and Tinubu cannot lead Yoruba land because all he has done is to lead us astray. All he has done for us is to give some of our people who are close to him appointments. Nothing tangible has been done for Yoruba land. He gave his stooges appointments, nothing more, nothing less. If he has done more than that, let him say it."

The elder statesman who is in his 90's, said the only demand the Yoruba had made was restructuring, which the APC had been dishonest about.

"If Tinubu is daydreaming, he shouldn't think others are daydreaming like him.

"Buhari is a stranger to us in Yoruba land. The only Yoruba supporting him are those benefiting from this corrupt regime."

They Approached Me To Agree To Replace Ekweremadu - Abaribe Discloses

Posted: 22 Aug 2018 06:30 AM PDT

Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe

Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, who is the Chairman of the South-east Senators' Forum, yesterday disclosed how he had been approached by undisclosed persons to replace Senator Ike Ekweremadu as Deputy Senate president.

This revelation is coming as the governors of the South-east states have also alleged that the evaluation of the 2017 budget of the federal government in the zone showed that the construction of second Niger Bridge was not included in the budget.

According to a report by ThisDay, Senator Abaribe however said the move was one of the strategies being employed to break the unity of the South-east lawmakers in order to effectively clip the wings of Ekweremadu.

Abaribe disclosed this even as the Enugu State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) vowed to show the embattled deputy Senate president the exit door in the coming general election, insisting that his four-terms in the Upper Chamber of the National Assembly have been dismal.

In a related development, the state APC said rather than allow Ekweremadu for the fifth time, they would support President Muhammadu Buhari's Adviser on Justice Sector Reform, Mrs. Juliet Ibekaku-Nwagwu, to represent them, saying  the deputy Senate president has overstayed his usefullness in the National Assembly.

Senator Abaribe, while speaking at a one-day workshop for the presentation of the performance report of the 2017 Federal Capital Budget in the South-east states, organised by the South East Governors' Forum held in Enugu, he said Senators from the zone remained undivided.

"We are united in one purpose and we have demonstrated that by ensuring that Ekweremadu remains the deputy Senate president. I've been approached severally to take the position and I said no!

"I was clearly told that the position was not the exclusive reserve of Enugu State but I made it clear that Ekweremadu represents our collective interest," he said.

In the same vien, the governors of the South-east states yesterday alleged that a report on the performance of the 2017 budget of the federal government in the zone showed that the much celebrated construction of second Niger Bridge in Onitsha, Anambra State, has never been budgeted for.

They also lamented that the zone had been lagging behind in the implementation of federal government budgets when compared to other geopolitical zones in the country.

They asked the government to effectively carry the zone along in the implementation of the 2018 budget, insisting that the people of the area were being alienated.

The South-East Governors who spoke through Prof. Simeon Otuanya, the Director General of their Forum, noted that the budgets were designed to ensure the restoration of the Nigerian economy on the path of robust and sustainable growth across various sectors and geographical spaces around the country, stressing that it should fulfill expectations of the public

"We believe that such re-balancing must take into consideration the concepts of equity and fairness vertically and horizontally in other to develop every nook and cranny of the country. We will continue to work as think-tanks to review budget allocations and implementations at the state and national levels for all the years forward with special interest on how they are helping the region towards economic renaissance,"the governors stated.

Dr. Bukola Saraki

The National Coordinator of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders' Association in Benue State, Garus Gololo, has said they will force Bukola Saraki, the Senate President, out of office if he fails to resign.

Garus Gololo, in an interview with Punch, accused Saraki of creating problems for President Muhammadu Buhari.

According to Garus Gololo, these problems are also affecting the economic and national growth of the country.

"Nigerians are in dire need of people who have the interest of the masses. Miyetti Allah is looking for a leader who would preside over the affairs of the Senate with ultimate respect for the executive and the judiciary, not someone like Senator Saraki that would always scheme to outdo the Presidency.
