Governor Shettima Honours Boy Who Scored Highest In UTME With Scholarship To Covenant University

Posted: 07 Aug 2018 04:57 PM PDT

Gov. Shettima and Isreal Galadima

The Governor of Bornu State, Gov. Kashim Shettima on Tuesday honoured Galadima Isreal, the boy who scored the highest mark in 2018 UTME with full scholarship to study Electrical Engineering at Covenant University in Ogun State.

The boy identified as Israel Galadima is from Borno State, had the highest mark in UTME with a score of 364.

Gov. Shettima who was impressed by the performance, invited Isreal and his mother, Jummai Galadima, and honoured him with N5m full scholarship to study Electrical Engineering at Covenant University, Ota, Ogun State under the Borno State Ministry of Higher Education.

The event took place at the council chambers of the Borno State Government House, where the Governor thanked them for honouring his invitation, reiterating how proud of him he is.

"It is my honour of Meeting the JAMB King Galadima Israel, an indigene of Borno who scored highest in the 2018 tertiary matriculation examination in Nigeria.

"We are mightily proud of this young man, an orphan raised by a single mother by coming first nationwide after scoring 364 in the 2018 JAMB examination. We must identify with our son of Boko Haram ravaged Borno who defiled against all odds and became victorious". he said.

Shettima urged all to be generous and support one another devoid of religious or tribal diffrences.
The Governor said since he will be completing his tenure in 2019, he prefers to approve payment upfront in order to ensure that Isreal, who made nine distinctions after taking this year's West African Examination Council's (WAEC) papers, does not have to follow-up on any tuition at the State scholarship board.

"Israel, as his mother has told us, was raised as an orphan. The mother lost her husband who was a Major in the Nigerian Army about 14 years ago and she singlehandedly raised three children.

"Israel is the second of her children. She works in Lagos as a Banker, we don't have to make her travel all the way to Maiduguri again to pursue any payment.

She has done her part by raising a child with excellence, and that child has made Borno State very proud. It's our turn to support him.

"I will suggest that the mother pays all the fees upfront to avoid any tuition increase in future. I am particular about Israel because he was raised as an orphan" Shettima said.

Mrs. Jummai Galadima, the mother, who was highly elated, thanked Governor Kashim Shettima for the kind gesture.

IGP Dissociates Police From Invasion Of National Assembly

Posted: 07 Aug 2018 09:37 AM PDT

Alhaji Ibrahim Idris, the Inspector-General of Police

Alhaji Ibrahim Idris, the Inspector-General of Police, has exonerated the Nigeria Police Force from Tuesday's invasion and blockage of the National Assembly by security operatives.

The IG absolved the police of any blame after a closed-door meeting with the acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Idris said that the standoff at the NASS complex reached him as a surprise, adding that the police would soon issue a statement in relation to the impasse.

"Obviously, like I said, I have not got a detailed brief on that. In fact, we are going to issue a (press) release (on that),'' he said.

The acting President had on August 7 sacked the Director General of the Department of State Services, Lawal Daura, with immediate effect over Tuesday's invasion of the premises of the National Assembly by security operatives.

The Acting President, condemned the unauthorised standoff at the National Assembly complex, describing it as "a gross violation of a constitutional order, rule of law and all accepted notions of the law and order."

Osinbajo said, the "unlawful act, which was done without the knowledge of the Presidency, is condemnable and completely unacceptable.''

He, therefore, assured Nigerians that all persons within the law enforcement apparatus, who participated in "this travesty'' would be identified and subjected to appropriate disciplinary action.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the sacked DSS boss, had, along with the IGP and the Chief of Staff to the President, Malam Abba Kyari, earlier met behind closed doors with the acting President.

Akpabio’s Defection Means Four Things For APC! - Consolatory Victory For APC?

Posted: 07 Aug 2018 03:15 AM PDT

Senator Godswill Akpabio and President Buhari

Senator Godswill Akpabio, the former governor of Akwa Ibom State, defection has been trending in the political terrain in Nigeria for the past few weeks.

Akpabio, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is set to announce his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC), on Wednesday.

It is no longer news also that the Akwa Ibom born politician went to London to meet with President Muhammadu Buhari, and Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Abuja, while a rally to formally welcome him into the party's fold, will be led by the Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo.

However, the interesting thing about the whole scenerio, is that he is leaving the opposition party not long after the PDP welcomed some political heavyweights and is close to regaining the majority at the senate. Why is Akpabio's defection beginning to look like the transfer of the season?

Read below some key factors that best offer insights into the significance of Akpabio's defection to the ruling party, APC;  put together by THECABLE

CONSOLATORY VICTORY FOR APC?

Akpabio's defection is coming at a time the ruling party has suffered severe loss, both at the national assembly and at the various states. In what began like a purge, the party first lost 15 senators before 37 members of the house of representatives followed suit and then governors of Benue, Kwara and Sokoto – all within two weeks!

The last time such shake-up occurred was in the buildup of the 2015 elections; with the defectors leaving the PDP into the welcoming hands of the newborn APC.

With the ruling party at the receiving end now, a move as that of Akpabio's could offer a temporary relief and, as best captured in the words of Lai Mohammed, could mean a one-one goalless draw for both parties.

The consolation makes more meaning with the circumstances surrounding the move brought into the picture. Unlike the case of other politicians whose defections were foreseen, no one anticipated that of Akpabio; not the PDP in the very least. And not when the party is seeking to cement its foundation ahead of the 2019 election.

INROAD INTO SOUTH-SOUTH

Like in the case of Saraki , the senator's defection is certainly going to reflect in the political rhythm of Akwa Ibom where he has a strong base. There is no doubt Akpabio remains one of the key political figures in Akwa Ibom, and arguably the most prominent governor the state has had.

Since moving to the senate in 2015, he still dictates, to a large extent, how things play out in the state's political theatre and enjoys massive support from both Akwa Ibom citizens and lots of other Nigerians.

And, you would agree, a win for APC in the state in 2019 is going to rub off on the whole of south-south. Currently, the PDP holds sway in five of the six states in the south-south – Akwa-Ibom, Bayelsa, Rivers, Delta, Cross River, with only Edo being controlled by the APC.

Securing Akwa-Ibom is going to have a huge impact on the PDP control in the region. The state had a considerably huge voting strength –1,644,481 registered voters during the 2015 poll – something big when compared to other south-south states like Bayelsa (605,637) and Cross River (1,144,288) and some south-west states like Ekiti (723,255) and Osun (1,378,113).

SENATE MINORITY LEADER TODAY, SENATE PRESIDENT TOMORROW?

Coincidentally, Akpabio currently leads the PDP lawmakers in the upper legislative chamber; a position he has been in with unquestionable allegiance and loyalty from his party members. His strong influence over his colleagues in the opposition party is in place without doubt, coupled with the fact that he is also well respected across party lines.

When he eventually decamps to APC, he might join hands with other top-ranking APC senators to oversee the alleged plot to impeach Saraki and ensure the APC regains its lead in the red chamber. With his streetsmart intelligence, who knows, the senator might as well end up as the senate president if the plot eventually sees the light of the day, assuming he has the backing of the party on this.

STAUNCH OPPONENT OF BUHARI… AND ALL OF A SUDDEN?

No doubt politics is really insane. Strictly a game of interest. One minute, you are one party's or individual's nightmare, opposing virtually everything they do and say; and the next day, you are in bed with them; with all criticisms and opposition forgotten.

Remember when as the chairman of the PDP governors' forum, how the senator was opposed to most of then-presidential candidate Muhammadu Buhari? In the buildup of the 2015 election and even afterwards, he was a staunch critic of Buhari and his agenda.

On one occasion, he had said the governors in the party are worried about the "age of Buhari's ideas " if he emerges as president.

He had said: "There is nothing wrong with his age, but we are extremely concerned about the age of his ideas, we are concerned that a man who could not take charge when he was in his 40s but rather bequeath to historical infamy a regime named after two individuals, Idiagbon-Buhari Regime ,instead of one person as used to be the case."

The criticisms did not get any better when he moved to the senate and emerged the minority leader. Usually outspoken, he had kept the current administration on its toes regarding many of its policies while speaking on the floor of the senate. In fact, he once said the administration of Nyesom Wike in Rivers state has
executed more projects than that of Buhari. Interesting how it is all changing now.

Akpabio's defection is the equivalent of one of those once-in-a-while type shaking the transfer market; big money and numerous caps to his name.

He comes with loads of experience in the kind of politics the APC needs ahead of the election. With his influence in the senate, the APC might as well be on its way to regaining the leadership of the upper legislative chamber – and maybe, having its way into the south-south.

Hyet urged them to work with the party to take power from the APC in the state come 2019.

Federal Government Evacuates Stranded Nigerians From Russia With $1million US Dollars

Posted: 06 Aug 2018 04:40 PM PDT

Mr Geoffrey Onyeama,

Mr Geoffrey Onyeama, Nigeria's Foreign Affairs Minister, has disclosed that the Federal Government spent one million dollars to evacuate 355 Nigerian football fans stranded in Russia after the 2018 World Cup.

The Minister made this disclosure on Monday in Abuja while in a questions and answers section with correspondents, and said that the evacuation was done in two batches of 155 persons and 200 persons.

Mr. Onyeama said that the second batch of 200 fans was returned to the country along with 17 Ghanaian football fans also stranded in Russia on Sunday.

He stated further that the money spent on the exercise was huge, particularly in the hard times in the country, and urged Nigerians to travel out of the country in a regular and legal manner.

According to the minister, by airlifting the 17 Ghanaians, Nigeria has again brought to the fore, its `Big Brother' role in Africa.

He said the Ghanaian authorities had appreciated the gesture through its Minister of Foreign Affairs as the returnees were transported to Ghana on Monday

READ ALSOPresident Buhari Jets Into Washington DC To Meet With US President

He recalled that the first batch of 155 fans, including a nursing mother, were evacuated from Russia after the Mundial in July,

The Nigerian mission in Russia had said that some of the fans initially profiled to be evacuated absconded and urged them to report at the mission as the federal government had made provision for their return.

Onyeama explained that the evacuation of the stranded fans followed a directive by President Muhammadu Buhari to Onyeama and his Aviation counterpart, Hadi Sirika, to immediately evacuate the stranded Nigerians back to the country.

"A week ago, we learnt that there was another huge number of Nigerians stranded and Russian authorities were going to take very strong measures.

"And again, the President directed that another plane should be made available to go and bring them back.

"They were 200 of them that were brought back on Sunday at a cost of one million dollars to the country," he said.

He said that the exercise was a clear indication of Buhari's determination to safeguard Nigerians and the interest of Nigerians wherever they may be compromised in the world.

Onyeama said the his Ghanaian counterpart, Shirley Botchway, who visited him earlier on Monday, expressed appreciation to the Federal Government for bringing back the 17 Ghanaian fans.

He said that the stranded fans expressed depressing and frustrating times as some of them recounted that they were scammed by travel agents "by cancelling their return tickets".

"We will, however, take the matter up with the travel agents; we will get to the bottom of the matter.

"It is very depressing and very annoying because we have a lot of challenges in our countries and the few resources we have, we want to utilise it on Nigerians.

"It is not to spend money to bring back people who just act in a very irresponsible fashion.

"We really have to work hard to stop this manner of trying at all cost to get to European countries in an irregular manner," he said. (NAN)

BREAKING: Akwa Ibom Assembly Lawmakers Vow Not To Follow Akpabio To APC - Declares ‘Udom Is Our Leader’

Posted: 06 Aug 2018 04:00 PM PDT

Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly members have restated their "support, loyalty and solidarity" with Udom Emmanuel, the State Governor.

Following Senator Godswill Akpabio, the former governor of the state, news of defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Wednesday, there have been some worries on what the effect of the outcome will have on both sides with regards to the power balance in the state.

According to Sahara Reporters, the lawmakers in the state have resolved to stay with "leader" Emmanuel Udom, the state governor and the PDP, insisting that their support for him is "based on the superlative performance that has characterized his leadership in the state".

Onofiok Luke, Speaker of the Assembly, said this on Monday when he led his colleagues on a visit to the Governor at the Government House, Uyo.

The Speaker however expressed regrets that two of his colleagues were absent but said it was only due to official engagements outside the country.

"We came with the understanding that we were elected by Akwa Ibom people on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party and that the leader of that party, His Excellency, the Governor in the state, has performed well and we on that platform of Peoples Democratic Party have come to show solidarity because of the performance that he has been able to put on ground," he said.

Onofiok reiterated their faith in "God's strength and in the leadership of Governor Emmanuel", maintaining that they visited to show their total support to him "so that at a time like this, he is not distracted, and can continue to deliver the dividends of Democracy for Akwa Ibom people".

"As members of the state legislature, we were not elected as Governors or members of the House of Assembly to be able to think about our personal interest. We were elected to carter for the well-being of Akwa Ibom people," he said.

"The easiest bet to fulfilling the wishes of the people is our unwavering support to the Governor who is the vision bearer that he will have the enabling environment to be able to deliver unto Akwa Ibom people.

"We came here to show solidarity and to show that he is our candidate for 2019, not only our candidate, that we will do all within our powers and all within the law to ensure that he returns to this Hiltop Mansion to complete his tenure as Governor just like every other person did in Akwa Ibom State in 2023.

"Your Excellency, the House of Assembly is with you and we want Nigeria to know that the House is totally with you because God is with you and because God is with us."

In his response, the State Governor, Emmanuel Udom, praised the loyalty of the lawmakers, saying: "As a state, we are not distracted; we are highly focused. Our party chairman is here, all of us here were elected on the platform of PDP.

"We are known to be very loyal people, the Niger Delta people are very loyal — very loyal and highly principled people. We don't just move like that."

He said it was not possible to see a Niger Delta man who is on a canoe in the high sea jump inside the Atlantic Ocean on the basis of a storm.

"So we just want the world to know that we are at peace with ourselves. All is well with us as far as this union, this body is concerned and we leave the rest into God's hands and then we will see what God wants to do," he added.
"This is God's own state; we restate and reaffirm our faith in God and God alone. Let the whole world know that we are PDP and PDP shall we be."

Africa50 Mobilise Funds To Shore Up Africa’s $108b Power & Infrastructure Deficit

Posted: 06 Aug 2018 02:51 PM PDT

The president of the African Development Bank (AfDB) Akinwumi Adesina

Africa50 has emerged a key player in driving infrastructure investments with commercial rates of return in the region, in an effort to bridge the continent's infrastructure financing gap estimated at $108 billion, after two years of operations.

The infrastructure investment platform comprises 26 African countries and two central banks, with over $850 million in committed capital from its shareholders. Already, it has made major investments in a number of shareholder countries, including Egypt, with 400-megawatt solar power plants; Nigeria, 100-megawatt solar power plants in Jigawa State; and Senegal, 120-megawatt combined cycle thermal power plant.

The Chief Executive Officer of Africa50, Alain Ebobissé, has stressed the urgent need to bring more infrastructure projects to financial close and operation to meet the continent's growing demands, which cannot be fulfilled by public funding alone. The African Development Bank Group President and Chairman of Africa50, Akinwumi Adesina also emphasised the importance of enhancing frameworks for public-private partnerships for infrastructure financing, adding: "This is where Africa50's role becomes very important."

Senate President Summons Emergency Meeting Of NASS Leaders

Posted: 06 Aug 2018 02:14 PM PDT

NASS
The Senate

Dr. Bukola Saraki, the Senate President has summoned an emergency meeting of the leaderships of the National Assembly.

The meeting, which is scheduled to hold on Tuesday noon time, is expected to have in attendance principal officers of the Senate and the House of Representatives.

The leadership of the two chambers have come under intense pressure to reconvene the federal legislature over certain issues.

The Aide of the Senate President on International Relations, Mr. Bamikole Omisore, said the lawmakers would also meet with Professor Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on the same day.

In the words of Bamikole Omisore:

"NASS leadership will tomorrow meet at noon to consider some national issues. The National Assembly leadership comprises both @NGRSenate and @HouseNGR," he tweeted.

"It will be followed by another meeting with the leadership of @inecnigeria led by its chairman, Prof Mahmood Yakubu."

Recall that the Senate and the House of Representatives proceeded on annual recess on July 24 to reconvene on September 25.

READ ALSOAPC vs PDP; Senators Misau, Ibrahim Blast Buhari's Supporters - Declares; Saraki Won't Resign, Do Your Worst!

According to the Guardian Newspaper, the meeting however, is coming hours after a plea from the Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly matters to the leadership of the national assembly to reconvene and treat pressing issues such as the 2019 elections budget and the supplementary proposed budget.

He said the country risks a total government shutdown if the National Assembly does not reconvene soon.

"So, there may be a complete government shut down and I know Nigerians will not like it; that is why we are appealing to the National Assembly to reconvene," Enang said.

But Nigeria's leading opposition party, the People's Democratic Party (PDP), said the call for the National Assembly to resume before the September 26 earlier scheduled is a matter of Enang's personal wishes.

PDP spokesman Kola Ologbodiyan said Enang had no power to force the lawmakers to reconvene and accused him of overreaching.

"As a matter of fact, Senator Enang was the Chairman, Senate Committee on Rules and Business, in both the House of Representatives and the Senate," Ologbodiyan said.

"Will he listen to anybody from outside the chamber to come and dictate to the presiding officers?

"It is unfortunate that people who have experience in legislative practices and procedures, when they get to the executive arm, instead of telling the executives the limit of their powers they pretend to know it all."

Members Of APC Kick Against Akpabio’s Defection To The Party

Posted: 06 Aug 2018 10:10 AM PDT

Godswill Akpabio

The All Progressives Congress (APC) APC members in Akwa Ibom State, under the aegis of Akwa Ibom Progressives Watch, have petitioned the National Chairman of the party, Adams Oshiomhole, protesting the defection of Senate Minority Leader, Godswill Akpabio, to the party.

The group in a letter dated August 3, 2018, that was addressed to the APC National Chairman, the group said it had noted with deep concern the broad chorus of disapproval and complete despondency amongst different strata of members of the APC in Akwa Ibom State over the defection of Akpabio to the party.

The letter endorsed by Innocent Sylvanus, Chairman and Ubong Victor, Secretary, according to the Daily Post, read in part:

READ ALSO: Godswill Akpabio, Senate Minority Leader, Visits Buhari In London, Set To Dump PDP For APC

"Our group is an integrity watch team whose support for the APC is driven by the party's change agenda, the fight against corruption as well as the near immaculate personality of the leader of the Party, President Muhammadu Buhari.

"We metamorphosed from Ibom Transparency Watch under the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), working assiduously in the last seven years to entrench in the party sterling values, such as integrity, justice, accountability and transparency, which are lacking in our political system.

"Hence, we have been on the watch so that such persons with tendencies which violate these values are not found tip-toeing around our party.

"For this reason, we feel sad, so are most members of the APC in Akwa Ibom State who looked up to our party as institution that will evict moral pervers as Senator Godswill Akpabio from position of authority, by the admission of Senator Godswill Akpabio into our party.

"Senator Akpabio who is now seeking asylum in the APC called our leader, President Muhammadu Buhari, very unprintable names during the 2015 electioneering.

"He ordered the immediate closure of the Ibom Airport on the day Buhari, who was then the presidential flag – bearer of our party visited Akwa Ibom State.

"After our President won the 2015 election despite all their antics, Akpabio encouraged former President Goodluck Jonathan to challenge Buhari's election victory in court."

According to the letter also, the group informed Oshiomhole, the APC National Chairman, that Akpabio polarised ethnicity to its zenith in his bid to annihilate the Ibibio majority, and destroy the Oro ethnic nationality, when he was governor of Akwa Ibom State.

Kumuyi Joins Politics

Posted: 06 Aug 2018 08:15 AM PDT

Justice Olasehinde Kumuyi, former Chief Judge of Ondo State,  has formally joined politics.

Kumuyi, a retired CJ, made the declaration at a political gathering held in his home town in Ogbagi-Akoko, Ondo State, confirmed that he has chosen to join the Labour Party as a resolve to rescue the downtrodden as well to fast track developments in Akoko which he described as the most marginalized part of the state.

The former CJ, who retired from the Ondo State judiciary in 2017, revealed that over 1000 chieftains of the PDP as well as the APC, including house of assembly aspirants on the platform of APC had defected to the Labour Party.

According to the DailyPost, Kumuyi said; the defections is attributed to the "zero" performance of the Gov. Akeredolu administration in the state, which he said has led to the decision of many to join Labour Party, Kumuyi emphasized that residents of the state are finding it hard to survive as a result of the government's lack of direction.

Justice Olasehinde Kumuyi

Justice Kumuyi, maintained that the Coalition of United Political Parties, CUPP that includes the PDP, Labour party and SDP was one of the major strategies to unseat the ruling APC at the 2019 general elections.

The former Chief Judge however called for caution, stressing that the coalition would only work if selfish political gladiators dropped their unnecessary ambitions for national interest.

Meanwhile, the former governor of Ondo State, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, who was represented by his ex-deputy, Alhaji Lasisi Oluboyo, expressed joy that well-meaning indigenes of the state like the former Chief Judge were joining Labour Party.

The former Governor disclosed that many more were set to join the party from the PDP and APC in a bid to rescue the state and the country at large.

"APC Can't Remove Saraki Without Two-Third Majority" - Falana States

Posted: 06 Aug 2018 06:36 AM PDT

Saraki, Tambuwal, Ortom and Ahmed

Mr. Femi Falana SAN, human rights lawyer, has stated that the All Progressives Congress (APC) cannot remove the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki without the required two-third majority of the entire members of the upper chamber of the National Assembly.

Falana, in a statement also justified the defection of Governors Abdulfatah Ahmed, Samuel Ortom and Aminu Tambuwal of Kwara, Benue, and Sokoto States respectively from the APC to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing a precedent by the Supreme Court.

The Senior Advocate of Nigeria(SAN) stated these positions in a statement he issued yesterday, making it clear that even though the defection of the Reformed APC (R-APC) lawmakers was illegal and unconstitutional, the APC "lacks the moral and political right to condemn their defection to the PDP."

It could be recalled that the APC, has witnessed in the last few weeks the defection of Saraki, Ahmed, Ortom, Tambuwal and scores of lawmakers in the National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly to the PDP in what could be attributed to  irreconcilable differences that had plagued the party since after the 2015 elections.

According to the ThisDay newspaper, following these defections, the PDP has alleged that the federal government and the APC had started shopping for "a fraudulent interim court order to declare vacant the seat of the Senate President following his defection from the APC to the PDP.

In a three-page statement, Mr. Falana cautioned against the illegal plot to remove Saraki as the Senate President, lamenting that the crisis of misgovernance in the country "has been accentuated by the official impunity of members of the ruling class."

He also lamented that the executive "is justifying disobedience of court orders while legislators regularly suspend their colleagues and carry out impeachment of governors outside the ambit of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria."

On the alleged plot to remove Saraki, Falana noted that section 52 of the 1999 Constitution provided the requirements for the impeachment of the Senate President and the Deputy Senate President, which should be fulfilled to remove Saraki.

Specifically, Falana explained that the section "provides that the Senate President and the Deputy Senate President can only be removed by the resolution supported by the votes of not less two- thirds majority of the entirety of the members of the Senate."

The human rights lawyer noted that since the APC legislators "cannot muster the required two-third majority of the votes of the entire members, the plan to impeach Senator Saraki should be dropped forthwith."

The human rights activist explained that the scenario playing out in the Senate was without precedent in our political history, though explained how the accord between the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) and Nigeria Peoples Party (NPP) collapsed in the Second Republic.

Falana added that when the accord collapsed in the Second Republic, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Ume Ezeoke of the NPP, a minority party in the lower chamber of the National was not forced to resign.

He explained that the election of Tambuwal as the Speaker of the House of Representatives was made possible by the alliance of the APC and defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) legislators.

Falana added that when he decamped from the PDP to the APC, Tambuwal was not asked "to step down from the office of the Speaker. Therefore, the APC should stop from demanding the resignation of Saraki as Senate President."

On the governors' defection, Falana observed that the 1999 Constitution "is silent on defection by the president and state governors from the political parties which sponsored their election."

The SAN, however, cited a decision of the Supreme Court in a case between Atiku Abubakar v Attorney General of the Federation (2007), which upheld that Abubakar's defection from the PDP to the defunct ACN was not illegal and unconstitutional.

Contingent on this judicial precedent, Falana said the decision of governors "to dump the political parties which sponsored their elections was not challenged.

"I have therefore, canvassed the argument that the defection of Tambuwal, Ortom and Ahmed from the APC to the PDP cannot be said to be illegal or unconstitutional," he added.

Also citing the decision of the Supreme Court in a case between Abegunde v Ondo State House of Assembly (2014), the senior advocate admitted that the defection of the R-APC legislators from the APC to the PDP and ADC "can be impugned under section 68 (1) (g) of the 1999 Constitution."

Since the APC had allowed legislators to decamp from the PDP to join its fold recently, Falana noted that the ruling APC "lacks the moral and political right to condemn the defection of the R-APC legislators".

"But the crass opportunism of the APC cannot legitimise the prostitution of the political system," he said.

"Having decamped from the APC, which sponsored their elections, the R-APC defectors ought to resign from the legislative houses and seek a fresh mandate from the electorate. In order to curb the dangerous trend, some aggrieved members of the constituencies of the defectors ought to contest the legal validity of the refusal to resign from the affected legislative houses," Falana suggested.

FG Blame Saraki For Frustrating Buhari’s Administration - See How!

Posted: 06 Aug 2018 04:58 AM PDT

Lai Mohammed and Bukola Saraki

The Federal Government, at the weekend, blamed Dr. Bukola Saraki, the Senate President for persistently frustrated the developmental efforts of the Muhammadu Buhari's administration since his emergence as leader of the upper legislative chamber through deliberate delay of annual budgets.

Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the Minister of Information and Culture, revealed this in an interview with journalists at the weekend in Lagos, and dismissed the claim by the Senate President that he was not considered by the President in appointments.

The Minister also described as untrue, the claim by Sokoto State governor, Aminu Tambuwal, while announcing his defection from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that his state was starved of Federal Government projects by the Buhari administration.

In his words:

"We have a National Assembly in which we had a clear majority in both houses, but which treated the executive with contempt and which actually slowed down the work of government.

In 2016, 2017 and 2018, our budgets were delayed. We can understand 2015 budget because we came on board in the middle of the year. But in 2016 and 2017, the earliest we got our budgets was June.

"Key appointments, nominations and confirmations for key organisations that could move the government forward like the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC), were delayed.

Really, it couldn't have been worse if the PDP had a majority in the National Assembly." On Saraki's claim on appointments, the minister said: "I think it is a blatant lie that Kwara State was not considered in appointments.

There are 26 appointees to boards, parastatals, either as members or directors- general to Kwara State and of these 26, I recommended only two. The other 24 were done by Saraki.

"In terms of development, the Ilorin-Jebba- Mokwa-Birnin Gwari road is 80 per cent completed. On the other hand, it is this same government that awarded the contract for Lokoja-Omu Aran-Ilorin road.

In terms of housing, we are building many two bedroom houses in Ilorin. Again, in terms of appointment, one of the chairmen of parastatals is the out-gone chairman of APC in Kwara State, Ishola Balogun-Fulani. So, Saraki's claim is a blatant lie."
