Boko Haram Insurgents reportedly killed over 30 Nigerian Soldiers Saturday, following an attack on their Military Base in Borno state.

According to media reports, no fewer than 30 soldiers was killed, following an attack by Boko Haram insurgents at  their military base.

The insurgents, according to AFP, were said to have invaded the military base, located in the North-East, near the Nigeria border and Niger.

The AFP reported that the insurgents attacked the army establishment at Zari village, near the northern axis of Borno State, late on Thursday.

The troops had to temporarily withdraw their attacks, following the heavy fighting that took place.

According to an anonymous military source, who said:

"They came in large numbers in trucks, carrying heavy weapons and engaged soldiers in a battle that lasted for an hour.

"We lost at least 30 men.

"They overwhelmed the troops, who were forced to temporarily withdraw before reinforcements arrived."

Reinforcement, however, later arrived before some sense of normalcy was restored.

While the fight lasted, the terrorists raided the army base, carting away weapons and other military equipment, before they were repelled by a fighter jet.

A military officer, speaking on the incident, said: "The terrorists also suffered heavy casualty from the bombardment."

According to one of the sources, the terrorists may have attacked from nearby Garunda village, where 17 soldiers were killed and 14 left injured in a similar attack, but on another military base, in August.

Meanwhile, a statement credited to the Nigerian Army on the incident, read: "Troops…have successfully routed Boko Haram insurgents in an encounter that ensued yesterday evening at Zari village."

There was no mention of soldiers being killed, but the army noted that "several Boko Haram fighters and weapons" were destroyed in the incident.

Angela Merkel Ends Visit To Africa In Nigeria

Angela Merkel

Angela Merkel, German Chancellor, who had been on a three-day tour of Africa, wraps up visit in Nigeria with a meeting between the leaders of Europe's and Africa's largest economies focusing on migration.

The German Chancellor, has been travelling with nearly a dozen German CEOs in Senegal and Ghana, two of Africa's fastest-growing economies. The tour aims to boost investment in a region that is a major source of migrants heading toward Europe, even as migrant arrivals across the Mediterranean are at their lowest level in five years.

"This administration is very clear: We do not support illegal migration," Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari told a joint press conference. "But we will also do everything to help bring all stranded Nigerians back home."

Some in Europe hope that investing in West Africa will keep people in a region plagued with unemployment, rising extremism and the effects of climate change from leaving. Merkel's visit comes two days after that of British Prime Minister Theresa May, who announced a project with France to help Nigeria, the region's powerhouse, and neighbouring Niger improve border cooperation along a key migration route.

The international community also has interest in sub-Saharan Africa's economic potential and its booming population, which is expected to double by 2050.

Nigeria is among several West African nations that in recent months have brought home thousands of citizens stranded in squalid camps in Libya on their way toward Europe. After reports of abuses, Buhari late last year called it appalling that some Nigerians "were being sold like goats for few dollars" in the North African nation.

Finding opportunity at home, however, has been a challenge. Some Nigerians were alarmed by recent reports based on data by the World Poverty Clock, funded by Germany's ministry for economic cooperation and development, saying their country had surpassed India with the largest number of people living in extreme poverty.

Also faced with widespread corruption, more than one-third of Nigerians say they have considered moving abroad, according to a 2017 Afrobarometer survey last year. – AP
