However, the major opposition party, the Peoples Democratic party, PDP, has described the supplementary election as a broad day robbery, and the most brazen assault on democracy in the history of the state.

This statement was contained in a press release signed by the Chairman of the party, Hon. Soji Adagunodo, the copy which was made available to journalists in Osogbo.

Adagunodo accused the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, of conniving with security personnel to manipulate the electoral process, vowed to resist it in due course.

The PDP State Chairman, explained that thousands of eligible voters were chased away from their homes in Orolu, Ife North and Ife South Local Governments in the early hours of Thursday .

"Scores of our supporters in those local governments were shot and matchetted on their way to polling centres and in the full glare of security men. Hundreds of people holding PVCs from other polling units were accredited and allowed to vote in Osogbo and Ife South Local Governments.

"PDP Agent in Olode was axed and abducted at about 7am today. Media men and election observers were denied access in several polling units. By the time access was granted to journalists at about 11am, ballot boxes had been stuffed by APC agents acting in connivance with INEC officials.

"It is regrettable that election in 7 polling units could not be freely and fairly concluded by the Independent National Electoral commission.

"We reject any returns of results from this sham and call on the INEC authorities in Abuja to direct that the so called supplementary election result collation be put on hold now.

"We equally invite leaders of thought in Nigeria and the International community to rise up now to rescue Nigeria's democracy from being ruined.

"We also call on all members and supporters of our party to resist any attempt to foist a concocted election results on the people of Osun using all legal means at their disposal".

JUST IN: OsunRerun: UK, EU, US Observers Rate The Governorship Election Rerun

Posted: 27 Sep 2018 04:02 PM PDT

Voters on queue

The UK, EU, and US election observation team have given their initial observation on the conduct of the rerun governorship election in Osun State.

According to the media reports available to us, the observers gave their position while addressing journalists in Osogbo in an interview televised by the TVC television station.

A member of the observer team, who spoke on behalf of the team, said the UK, EU, and US observers had heard reports of irregularities, harassment and interference by inappropriate persons in the elections.

"We are very concerned by these reports and will be checking with stakeholders to check the facts. We call on all stakeholders to remain calm," he added.

Earlier, the Centre for Democracy and Development, one of the foremost observer groups in Nigeria, faulted the rerun election process.

"In the light of these anti-democratic acts, which have undermined the sanctity of the ballot therefore, we hold strongly the view that the re-run poll of Thursday, September 27, 2018 does not meet up with the minimum standards for free, fair and credible elections," the CDD said in a statement to PREMIUM TIMES Thursday afternoon.

However in the same vein, the United States Consul General in Lagos gave a clean slate to the rerun election.

Recall that the rerun election was slated to determine the winner of the governorship election which held in Osun on Saturday 22nd of September, following the cancellation of votes in seven polling units in four local governments.

However in the Saturday election, the PDP candidate, Senator Ademola Adeleke had a lead in that election, his margin of victory over the APC candidate, Gboyega Oyetola, was less than the total cancelled votes, the electoral commission, INEC, had said.

"I'm here as an observer today. All I can talk about is what's in front of me. And today in Osogbo its working fine.

"At this polling unit things have been going on pretty well today. No problem with card readers; people have been orderly.

"We have party agents here from all the political parties. I'm not hearing a lot of complaints. I haven't seen any vote buying here."

On why he was there personally to monitor the election, Bray said it was due to the importance the United States attaches to democratic processes.

"The United States is interested in democracy, because we're a democratic country. So, we always support elections and democracy in Nigeria.

"I observe all the elections personally and I was here last week," he said.

On how he rates the performance of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Bray said: "From what I've seen so far in Osogbo, INEC's performance is fine."

Bray, who was at the unit when gunshots were fired around noon, praised the security agencies for preventing any disruptions.

"There was someone who tried to disrupt the poll. They quickly got the unit back to order. The Police and security services came together.

"There was somebody trying to upset the balance, but he didn't," Bray said.

Osun Rerun Election: Voters Defy Heavy Downpour, As They Refuse To Quit The Queue

Posted: 27 Sep 2018 03:51 AM PDT

Voters at Osun Rerun Election

There was great determination witnessed today at Polling Unit 17, Ward 5, Adewale Street, Alekuwodo, Osogbo, when voters that came out to participate in the Osun State governorship rerun election refused to quit the queue in spite of a heavy downpour.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the election process started at 8 a.m. on Thursday but at around 9:12 a.m., there was heavy downpour which halted the process.

It was reported that the sudden rainfall had everybody running for cover but voters already on the voting queue, who initially ran for cover, quickly returned when they noticed that others who refused to take cover had moved forward to replace them.

By the time the rain subsided, all the voters on the queue were already drenched.

The voting, however, continued at 9:30 a.m. when everyone (INEC staff, security, media men and others) had returned to their posts.

Earlier, some middle-aged men and an elderly woman who came with Permanent Voter Cards from another unit, had attempted to cast their votes but were disallowed by vigilant security and party agents.
