Dogara, Speaker Of House Picks PDP Nomination Form

Posted: 12 Sep 2018 05:31 PM PDT

Honurable Yakubu Dogara, Speaker House of Reps.

Honurable Yakubu Dogara, Speaker, House of Representatives has been reported to have picked the nomination form to return to the House of Representatives on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, multiple sources familiar with the development has said.

According to the Premium Times, the speaker picked the form on Wednesday, a day after dozens of his constituents travelled from his home state of Bauchi to Abuja, to meet with him.

Dogara told his constituents during the rally, which held at his residence in Abuja Tuesday, where he told them, that he wanted to threw in the towel on partisan politics — having served 12 years at the House, four out of which he spent as Speaker — but their overwhelming demand forced his hands to continue his lawmaking career.

"Some people said they will retire us from politics, but we want to inform them that only God and the electorate can retire us," Mr Dogara said in an apparent reference to his state governor Mohammed Abubakar, with whom he had been locked in a fierce battle of wits over 2019 electioneering.

Mr Dogara's dispute with his APC state governor typifies similar patterns in many APC governed states including Kano, Ogun, Kaduna, Jigawa, Oyo and so on. In many of such states, the lawmakers defected from the governing party with the belief the governors would eventually have their way in the party. Only in few instances like in Kaduna did the federal lawmakers choose to remain in the APC and battle it out with the governor.

The Speaker with this development has apparently demonstrated his choice now to leave the ruling APC.

The Bauchi politician was first elected to the parliament in 2007 as a member of the PDP, Nigeria's ruling party from 1999-2015. He defected to the APC in 2014 as part of the new-PDP bloc that revolted ahead of the 2015 elections.

The loss of the new-PDP bloc to the APC was considered a major factor responsible for the defeat of President Goodluck Jonathan and the emergence of Muhammadu Buhari as the first opposition flag-bearer to defeat an incumbent in the country's post-independence history.

Mr Dogara did not say through which political party he would run when he addressed his loyalists Tuesday, a development that tormented top APC politicians, according to one of them who spoke with PREMIUM TIMES Wednesday night.

"He has picked up a PDP nomination form," a source close to the Speaker told PREMIUM TIMES Wednesday night. "They are filling it now and should be submitting it by tomorrow (Thursday)."

The disclosure was corroborated by another top PDP official at the Wadata House Wednesday night.

"I can confirm it, he picked up the form already," the official said under anonymity to avoid offending Mr Dogara, whom they described as "a new bride".

The low-key affair under which Mr Dogara obtained his nomination form from the PDP follows a consistent pattern of his political style.

The Speaker has long been identified as amongst those expected to leave the APC, but he declined to make this public unlike Senate President Bukola Saraki and a host of other top APC politicians who abandoned the ruling party in recent months.

Mr Dogara was amongst APC chieftains who moved to polarise the party in early July, alleging unbridled marginalisation and frustrated by a reconciliation effort that was characterised by distrust between all parties.

Although Mr Dogara did not formally announce his defection to the PDP, his acquisition of the party's form to run in his Bogoro/Dass/Tafawa Balewa Federal Constituency next February has effectively made him a chieftain of the opposition party.

The loss appears the biggest since the ruling party lost Mr Saraki to the PDP late July. The senate president is now in the race for the opposition party's presidential ticket in primaries scheduled for next month.

Kola Ologbondiyan, a spokesperson for the PDP, declined comments Wednesday night. A spokesperson for Mr Dogara did not immediately return calls for comments.

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala Got Nigeria Out Of Debt After Years, We Are Back Deep Into It – Buhari’s Ex-Minister (VIDEO)

Posted: 12 Sep 2018 04:15 PM PDT

Mrs Amina Mohammed

The deputy secretary-general of the United Nations (UN), Mrs Amina Mohammed, says Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, two-time minister of finance, spent years to get Nigeria out of debt.

Amina, noted that the country is now back to worrying levels of debt.

The International Monetary Fund, (IMF) on Wednesday published a video which has now gone viral which shows Amina Mohammed, the immediate past minister of environment in Nigeria, expressing her worry on the rising level of debt in Nigeria and the rest of Africa.

The former minister, while speaking at the UN working together conversation with Christine Lagarde, the Managing Director of the IMF, Mohammed had agreed with Lagarde that Okonjo-Iweala was very influential in the debt relief Nigeria secured in 2006.

Amina added that, the UN and IMF must have better conversations on the demands of a growing economy, seeking ways to make growth better and inclusive.

"As I was coming up from New York, some of the concerns that came up from the meeting we had in China just recently and reports that we have; the debt issues are really big, I mean, having experienced what it was for Ngozi (Okonjo-Iweala) to get debt relief.

Watch video below:

"It took her a few years to convince people, and we are now back again in my country, with a level of debt that is worrying, but its happening all over. Africa, is that the way we want to go?

"I think we really need to sit down and have a better conversation about all the asks of a growing economy; that needs to be inclusive, it needs to succeed, because stability is needed more than ever today, across our countries and where we are working."

Before 2005, Nigeria had an external debt stock of $36 billion, which had been carried over from the military years, dating back to 1985.

In October 2005, with Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as finance minister, Nigeria and the Paris Club announced a final agreement for debt relief worth $18 billion and an overall reduction of Nigeria's external debt stock by $30 billion.

The deal was completed on April 21, 2006, when Nigeria made its final payment and its books were cleared of any Paris Club debt, bringing Nigeria's external debt profile to just $3 billion while domestic debt was only about N1 trillion.

As at June 30, 2018, Nigeria's total debt profile, according to the Debt Management Office (DMO) had risen to $73.21 billion or N22.38 trillion.

JUST IN: See Reasons Why INEC May Suspend 2019 General Elections

Posted: 12 Sep 2018 02:25 PM PDT

INEC

Following threats of violence in the country by some Politicians, The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC may suspend the  2019 general elections

According to PoliticsNGR the INEC chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu made this comment on Tuesday while reacting to some disturbing videos of Political campaigns on Social media with some politicians threatening to shed blood.

After receiving a briefing from the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Osun State, on the progress and the preparedness of the forthcoming governorship election in the state, Mr. Yakubu said he was disturbed by the threat of violence.

The INEC Chairman, however called on politicians all over the country to conduct themselves in a orderly manner.

He said;

"In fact, the Electoral Act, especially section 26, empowers the commission to suspend election on account of violence or threat of violence. "So, we will continue to partner and continue to work with the security agencies as we approach the 2019 general election. Our meetings are going to become more frequent and regular".

Yakubu explained that the synergy between the electoral body and security agencies is crucial for the 2019 polls in order to secure the environment for the conduct of the elections. Insisting that there is no way election can be conducted except the nation maintains order, peace, and progress, he continued:

"Elections cannot be conducted in an atmosphere of rancor. So, we share this great responsibility with the security agencies. Good election is good for this country. Bad election is a recipe for disaster; we don't pray for it. "So, let us continue to work together to anticipate the challenges and address the challenges because we have the capacity to do so. The nation expects we should do so and once we do so, there will be fewer problems during elections".

"We see statements by some of the political actors captured and circulated nationwide via social media platforms. It is something that the security agencies need to put an eye on because if we allow this to pester, it will encourage those who may wish to do some destructive actions or feel encouraged to do so.

"But if we take immediate action, I think we may be able to stop them and further secure the environment for us to conduct free, fair and credible elections".

See How Gov. Ambode’s Rift With Bola Tinubu Started (Full Story)

Posted: 12 Sep 2018 05:57 AM PDT

Mr. Akinwumi Ambode

The quarrel between Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his godson, the Lagos State Governor Mr. Akinwumi Ambode is no longer a secret as Tinubu has come in the open to condemn Ambode.

The recent anointing of another APC candidate Mr. Jide Sanwaolu, a former Special Adviser to Tinubu, for the Governorship race of the state has nailed the existence of the rift.

Read below the full story of the genesis of the quarrel as published by PoliticsNGR:

The current rift between the Governor of Lagos state, Akinwunmi Ambode and the national leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress and Former Lagos Governor, Bola Ahmed Tinubu reportedly started after alteration of the state's major policies shortly after Ambode assumed office.

PoliticsNGR learned that APC leader refused to endorse his political godson for re-election yesterday, ascribing it to Ambode's decision to alter, modify and scrap some state's policies initiated under the Tinubu administration between 1999 and 2007.

READ ALSOMeet Godfathers in political battles with their Godsons - 2019 Election Loading

One of the sources mentioned the affected policies to include Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) and Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), which the Ambode administration scrapped and modified to serve the residents more effectively.

According to Thisday, While KAI was replaced with the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), the source said LAWMA gave way for Cleaner Lagos Initiative (CLI), which he said, designed for effective management of the state's residential wastes.

However, according to him, the CLI later created grievous waste management challenges in the state. When scrapped, Asiwaju believed Ambode just wanted to rubbish his legacies. He was indeed displeased.

Apart from KAI and LAWMA, another source cited the case of Lagos Bus Reform Initiative, which the Ambode administration invested over N30 billion Paris Club refunds the state received from the federal government between 2016 and 2017.

Specifically, the source disclosed that Tinubu's idea of public transportation "is completely different from the Bus Reform Initiative, which Ambode introduced in 2017. Asiwaju believes public transportation should be driven by the private sector

"Ambode's decision to invest such huge amount on the construction of bus terminals and procurement of about 6,000 air-conditioned high occupancy vehicles is at variance with Asiwaju's position. Asiwaju never bought into this initiative."

Besides policy alteration, an entirely different source said Asiwaju was displeased with his godson because he set up a political group of his own called Akinwunmi Ambode Campaign Organisation (AAMCO) with networks across all LGAs and LCDAs.

READ ALSODele Momodu Reacts On Tinubu's Joker, As Jide Sanwoolu Joins Lagos Governorship Race

According to the source, all political groups in the state have been collapsed into Bola Ahmed Tinubu Campaign Organisation (BATCO). Asiwaju felt the creation of AAMCO was a violation of his directive. But the truth is Ambode created the group because he won the APC governorship ticket in December 2014.

Ambode had expressed interest to run for a second term as governor of the state on the platform of the APC.

The governor made the official declaration on Monday, September 10, in Alausa. Ambode recalled how he was called upon by Lagosians to come and serve the state four years ago and thanked them for their support.

He said: "In the last three and a half years, I have fulfilled my promises to you to make Lagos work for all. With your support, we have made Lagos a better place and changed the face of our State. I did not do it alone; we did it together, because you believed.

"Our state has remained steadily prosperous because of your positive outlook. I urge you to always stay positive in your personal and communal lives and continue to aspire to great things.

But recent developments might mar his Second term ambition as some APC chieftains including former APC Deputy Chairman, Cardinal James Odumbaku and former Commissioner for Agriculture and Cooperatives, Mr. Kaoli Olusanya, allegedly directed him(Ambode) to return his nomination form or face impeachment at a meeting held at Watercress Hotel, Ikeja Monday night.

At the meeting, all Chairmen of 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 37 Local Council Development Area (LCDAs) signed the governorship nomination form of Tinubu's anointed candidate, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, announcing him as the next governor of Lagos state.
