Posted: 14 Sep 2018 04:50 PM PDT

Kemi Adeosun

President Muhammadu Buhari Friday accepted the resignation letter of the Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun.

Mr. Femi Adesina, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, in a statement signed by him confirmed the development.

Buhari thanked Adeosun for her services to the nation and wished her well in her future endeavours.

Daily Post reported earlier that Adeosun, a graduate from London East Polytechnic at the age of 22 in 1989, failed to comply with NYSC Act, which made it compulsory for every Nigerian graduate at home or abroad to participate in one year of mandatory service to the nation.

Recall that the NYSC had said that from their records, Adeosun applied for an exemption certificate, but failed to state whether the request was granted or not.

According to the DAILY POST, the Presidency in its initial reaction to the certificate saga, said it hopes the certificate forgery allegation against the Minister of Finance would soon be proven to be false and added that investigations were ongoing.

Mr. Garba Shehu, President Muhammadu Buhari's spokesperson, was quoted at that time: "The Minister of Information has spoken on the matter. And a process is ongoing to address the allegations. When that process is complete, Nigerians will know the outcome.

"Some people want a particular outcome and because they are yet to see this outcome, they are not happy. Give it (investigation) time. There is a process ongoing."

Following the resignation of Mr. Adeosun, President Buhari has approved that the Minister of State for Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, should oversee the Ministry of Finance with effect from today (Friday).

See Reasons I Resigned As Finance Minister – Kemi Adeosun Finally Opens Up (Full Text)

Posted: 14 Sep 2018 03:53 PM PDT

Mrs. Kemi Adeosun

Mrs Kemi Adeosun's letter of resignation has been obtained by our reporter following our earlier report that the Finance Minister has resigned her appointment.

Adeosun gave reasons in the letter why she decided to resign among which is the allegation of forgery of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificate. She however thanked and appreciated President Buhari for the privilege to serve in his administration.

She also appreciated Buhari for his patience and support "during the long search for the truth in this matter".

Read the extract of Mrs Adeosun's resignation letter dated 14th September, 2018,  as obtained by our reporter:

14th September, 2018

His Excellency,
Muhammadu Buhari,
President, Federal Republic of Nigeria,
State House,
Aso Villa
Abuja.

Dear Excellency,

Let me commence by thanking you profusely for the honour and privilege of serving under your inspirational leadership. It has been a truly rewarding experience to learn from you and to observe at close quarters your integrity and sense of duty.

I have, today, become privy to the findings of the investigation into the allegation made in an online medium that the Certificate of Exemption from National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) that I had presented was not genuine. This has come as a shock to me and I believe that in line with this administration's focus on integrity, I must do the honourable thing and resign.

Your Excellency, kindly permit me to outline some of the background to this matter. I was born and raised in the United Kingdom, indeed my parental family home remains in London. My visits to Nigeria up until the age of thirty-four (34) were holidays, with visas obtained in my UK passport. I obtained my first Nigerian passport at the age of thirty-four (34) and when I relocated there was debate as to whether NYSC Law applied to me. Upon enquiry as to my status relating to NYSC, I was informed that due to my residency history and having exceeded the age of thirty (30), I was exempted from the requirement to serve. Until recent events, that remained my understanding.

On the basis of that advice and with the guidance and assistance of those, I thought were trusted associates, NYSC were approached for documentary proof of status. I then received the certificate in question. Having never worked in NYSC, visited the premises, been privy to nor familiar with their operations, I had no reason to suspect that the certificate was anything but genuine. Indeed, I presented that certificate at the 2011 Ogun State House of Assembly and in 2015 for Directorate of State Services (DSS) Clearance as well as to the National Assembly for screening. Be that as it may, as someone totally committed to a culture of probity and accountability I have decided to resign with effect from Friday, 14th September, 2018.

Your Excellency, It has been an exceptional privilege to have served our nation under your leadership and to have played a role in steering our economy at a very challenging time. I am proud that Nigeria has brought discipline into its finances, has identified and is pursuing a path to long term sustainable growth that will unlock the potential in this great economy. Under your leadership, Nigeria was able to exit recession and has now started to lay the foundations for lasting growth and wealth creation. Repositioning this huge economy is not a short term task and there are no short cuts, indeed there are tough decisions still to be made but I have no doubt that your focus on infrastructural investment, revenue mobilisation and value for money in public expenditure will deliver growth, wealth and opportunity for all Nigerians.

I thank His Excellency, the Vice President and my colleagues in the Federal Executive Council for the huge pleasure and honour of working with them. I also thank most specially, the team in the 'Finance Family' of advisers and heads of agencies under the Ministry of Finance. Your Excellency, this group of committed Nigerians represent a range of backgrounds, ethnicities and ages. They have worked well above and beyond the call of duty to support me in the tasks assigned. The diversity in my team and their ability to work cohesively to deliver reforms, convinces me that Nigeria has the human capital required to succeed.

Your Excellency, let me conclude by commending your patience and support, during the long search for the truth in this matter. I thank you again for giving me the honour of serving under your leadership, it is a rare privilege, which I do not take for granted. As a Nigerian and committed progressive, I appreciate you for your dogged commitment to improving this nation.

Please be assured, as always, of my highest regards and best wishes.

Kemi Adeosun (Mrs)

Buhari Has Power To ‘Fire And Hire’ Anybody – Presidency Responds To Critics Over Appointment Of Bichi, New DSS DG

Posted: 14 Sep 2018 12:38 PM PDT

Lauretta Onochie

The Presidency, on Friday called out those condemning the appointment of Yusuf Magaji Bichi as the new Director-General of the Department of State Service, DSS.

We reported yesterday, that President Buhari had in a statement through his Spokesman, Garba Shehu, appointed Yusuf Magaji Bichi as the new Director General of the security agency.

According to the report, Magaji replaces Matthew Seiyeifa, a native of Bayelsa State, who has been operating in acting capacity since Lawal Daura was sacked few months back.

The appointment of Bichi has generated controversies from different quarters of the Nation, with many accusing the president of nepotism.

The DAILY POST reports that, the Presidency in reacting to the negative reactions trailing the appointment, Buhari's Aide on Social Media, Lauretta Onochie, in a statement posted on her Facebook page, said the President has the constitutional right to hire and fire anyone.

The Aide urged critics of the Buhari administration to stop turning a selective blind eye to procedures.

She cited how the Niger Delta region remained underdeveloped despite their son, President Goodluck Jonathan being the number one citizen for six years.

Onochie statement reads, "President Buhari will continue to exercise his constitutional rights to hire and fire.

"The truth is that small minded people who think only in Geography and Religion will always find fault in everything President Buhari does. And everything he does, he does within the boundaries of the law.

"The practice is that when a top public officer is dismissed, sacked or resigns, he or she is instructed to hand over to the highest ranking CIVIL SERVANT who assumes the office in an acting capacity UNTIL a substantive appointment is made.

"The top man when Mr. Lawal Daura lost his appointment at the DSS, was Mr. Matthew Seiyeifa. I am not aware that he was sacked. He wasn't. He's still in employment. In fact, he's due for retirement in a few weeks.

"When the former SGF, Engr. Babachir Lawal was relieved of his Duty, Lovely Dr. Habiba Lawal, the most senior Permanent Secretary, took charge in an acting capacity. She returned to her original duty post, when Mr. Boss Mustapha, the current SGF was appointed. And she's still there. And there are other examples.

READ ALSOPresident Buhari Appoints New Director-General Of DSS

"There was no single protest that Dr. Mrs. Lawal was not confirmed as the SGF. Maybe these people having a fit over this DSS appointment should ask themselves why they did not protest then.

"This pettiness of turning a selective blind eye to procedures and capacity and at the same time, embracing tribal/religious sentiments and ineffectual buffoonery, is what destroyed our nation.

"All of us are witnesses of how the Niger Delta was underdeveloped under Pres. Jonathan, a son of the Niger Delta while President of this country. The only people whose lives improved were his friends from every tribe in this nation.

"When do we learn that it's a battle between the haves and have-nots in our nation? That it's not between North and South. The greedy thieves in the north are in alliance with the greedy thieves in the south. And they are all livid with rage that the recovered Abacha loot, is going to struggling traders and not them!

"But why do we love the man, Buhari? Pres. Muhammadu Okechukwu Buhari has the political will to override the ingrained primordial needs of the willfully deaf, the willfully blind and the willfully dumb.

"President Buhari will continue to exercise his constitutional rights to hire and fire. The best part of why we love him is that he never gives in to intimidation and blackmail. Let the uninformed be informed that we have rules, regulations, policies and procedures. Let's all grow above this antediluvian state of being. It expired 200 years ago."

Tinubu In Aso Rock To Meet Buhari Over Ambode’s Second-Term Bid

Posted: 14 Sep 2018 10:32 AM PDT

President Buhari and Asiwaju Tinubu

President Muhammadu Buhari and the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Bola Tinubu, were on Thursday night locked in a meeting in Abuja, over Tinubu's withdrawal of support for the second term bid of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, ThisDay has reported.

It was learnt that with the President's last-minute intervention, Gov. Ambode would likely get Tinubu's nod to seek re-election in 2019 on the platform of the ruling APC.

Recall that there has been serious speculations of the uncertainty of the political future of Ambode after Jideo Sanwo- and former Lagos State Commissioner for Works & Infrastructure, Hamzat obtained nomination form, to challenge Ambode in the APC primaries scheduled to hold on September 19.

An insider source disclosed that all the chairmen of 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) as well as 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in the state, have signed Sanwo-Olu's governorship nomination form, claiming that they were acting on Tinubu's instruction.

Other sources however said that they doubt, if the meeting with the president would provide succour for Ambode as Tinubu's options are said to be limited.

It was learnt also that, Asiwaju Tinubu's close associates are reportedly telling him that having showed his hand, it was better for him to finish what he has started, fearing that should he be persuaded to back pedal and support Ambode, it could be costly.

"Ambode could play the good boy now, and deal with Tinubu and his supporters once he wins his second term. He would have nothing to fight for or lose again.

"Tinubu is not likely to be persuaded by Buhari's fear that an Ambode defeat could backfire. He would assure them that he could handle the situation without any adverse consequence for the president's election and APC's fortune in the state," a source said.

Kemi Adesoun’s Resignation Won't Help You In 2019 – Junaid Mohammed Tells Buhari

Posted: 14 Sep 2018 08:01 AM PDT

Junaid Mohammed

Junaid Mohammed, Second Republic lawmaker,  on Friday reacted to the resignation of embattled Kemi Adeosun, Nigeria Finance Minister.

The news of Adeosun resigning her appointment as the Minister of Finance, too over major media platforms.

Adeosun's resignation from President Muhammadu Buhari's cabinet may not be unconnected with her alleged forgery of National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, certificate.

Reacting to the development, a former lawmaker,  Junaid Mohammed while speaking with DAILY POST, commended the courage of the Minister for her decision.

Junaid Mohammed, however, warned that the move was not enough to redeem the President Muhammadu Buhari's government ahead of the 2019 elections.

The former Lawmaker, noted that anyone who commits any "infraction" in politics must be made to face the consequences.

Mohammed said;

"It's good news and it means that the nation under the Buhari's Presidency is beginning to recover and I must say this, the media in the case of Adesoun has played a very honourable role. They stuck d to their role and the media as the moral conscience of the country insisted that what is right must be seen to be right and what is wrong must be seen to be wrong and those people who committed infractions when they are in positions of authority who are supposed to be seen as role models must behave reasonably no matter his or her position.

"No matter the position, when they commit this kind of outrageous offence, they must be made to face the consequences.

"I wish to remind Nigerians that in politics, doing wrong implies people will have to pay for what they did wrong, if you do something criminal, you must pay for your criminality and if you abuse public office, the least you can do is that you resign.

"I'm sure she was forced to resign and for the first time in this government, something has been done right."

On Adeosun's resignation been a move by the Buhari's government to redeem its image ahead of the 2019 election, Mohammed said, "It may be that, but I have some news for Buhari himself and the government, this is not enough to redeem Buhari and his government."

Reasons Bukola Saraki Should Be Sent To Prison – Omo-Agege

Posted: 14 Sep 2018 08:22 AM PDT

Senator Ovie Omo-Agege

The Senator representing, APC-Delta Central in the Upper Chambers of the National Assembly, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege on Thursday, asked the Federal High Court in Abuja to commit the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, to prison for disobeying court orders.

According to Omo_Agege, in form 49 (contempt of court charge) he filed before the court, he alleged that Saraki had since refused to comply with the judgement that nullified his suspension from the Senate.

Omo-Agege's lawyer, Dr. Alex Iziyon, SAN, told the court that though his client was sequel to the May 10 judgement, allowed entry into the Senate chambers, he said that Saraki has refused to okay the payment of his entitlements.

"My client has since resumed, but he has not been paid his entitlements. That is why we want this court to summon the Respondents to show cause why they should not be committed to prison for refusing to comply with judgement of this court", Iziyon, SAN, submitted.

Dr. Iziyon, further applied for leave of the court to serve a copy of the contempt charge on both the Senate and Saraki, through substituted means.

"My lord it has been very difficult to serve them", Omo-Agege's lawyer added.

Justice Nnamdi Dimgba who is currently sitting as a vacation judge, said the court would communicate a hearing date to the Applicant.

Recall that in June, the court granted Omo-Agege's application to serve contempt proceedings on the Senate and Saraki, through newspaper publication.

The court had nullified his suspension and declared it illegal on the grounds that the reason given by the Senate and the Senate President for suspending him was unconstitutional.

The court had consequently ordered the defendants to pay Omo-Agege any outstanding salaries or allowances which were due to him during the period of the suspension.
