Atiku and Peter Obi

The Atiku Presidential Campaign Organisation (APCO) Friday night confirmed that former Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi, had been picked  by the Peoples Democratic Party Candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, as his running mate.

APCO also gave reasons why Obi was picked, explaining that his choice was largely influenced by his youthfulness, vast knowledge of global and local economies as well as being a financial expert, an experience which it said Nigeria was in need of at this point in time.

In a statement issued Friday night, the Director General, Atiku Presidential Campaign Organisation (APCO), Otuba Gbenga Daniels, described  Obi as an astute professional who had laid his footprints across the corporate world.

Daniels said Obi, born on 19th July, 1961, attended the Christ the King College, Onitsha and later proceeded to the University of Nigeria, Nsukka where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy.

He said Obi was also a graduate of several international and national institutions such as the Lagos Business School, Harvard Business School, London School of Economics, Columbia Business School, Institute of Management, Switzerland, Kellogg Graduate School, Oxford University and Cambridge University.

Garba Shehu Under Fire For Attacking Obasanjo, Atiku, Others - Buhari vs Atiku

Posted: 12 Oct 2018 05:43 PM PDT

Garba Shehu

Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to President Muhammadu Buhari has come under attack for criticizing his former boss, Atiku Abubakar.

Shehu worked under the Waziri of Adamawa between 2003 and 2015.

The Presidential spokesperson had on Thursday berated former President, Olusegun Obasanjo for endorsing Abubakar for the 2019 Presidential election at a meeting in Ogun State.

Shehu who described the meeting as a 'well-rehearsed theatre' was quoted as saying, "It is just eleven years ago that the former President and Vice President in their ugly fight for power accused each other of corruption. Nigerians are yet to forget all that.

"They will lose together. Listening to the prepared statement of the former President after the meeting showed the usual ego trip and "I know it all" character of Chief Obasanjo."

In their reaction, Nigerians, who took to their social media expressed divergent opinions.

Here are some comments DAILY POST gathered on Twitter.

@Gerund90, "You were Atiku's media aide before he donated you to Buhari's campaign. Now you want to deny your boss. Don't worry, no food for you after May 29th."

@olajidevincent, "And Nigerians remembered that you supported the then VP and now candidate of @OfficialPDPNig. You supported him with all you got and even denied all corruption charges against him. Whatever you are doing today for @MBuhari, you did more for @atiku then."

@Heightinfinity, "If Nigerians can forget that your boss toppled democracy which he now enjoys through coup d'etat in 80s, then nothing stops them from forgetting whatever happened in the Obasanjo-Atiku regime.

@SKSolaKuti, "Garba Shehu refused to author any press release when Atiku emerged as PDP chairman. He has found his voice when it concerns OBJ. Meanwhile, It is only in Nigeria that people say something is a non-issue in a press release on the issue that is a non-issue. Awon ode."

@Veektohr1, "Garba Shehu won't be working in the villa if Atiku didn't lend Buhari his media team before the 2015 elections and allowed Shehu to continue working for the president but now he wan dey insult am, na wa."

@BaronvonGeoff1, "Garba Shehu's filibustering is all about stomach infrastructure. If Fayose hires him tomorrow he will tear Buhari to shreds."

@JShoremekun, "See how the event turns, The same Garba Shehu was the Media aide to Atiku at the time Atiku and OBJ fell out. He remained so until his current appointment by PMB. Now he is on the other side dishing out jab at his former boss. The coming days promise to be interesting!"'

@PapazLagos, "Buhari should ask Garba Shehu to honorably resign. How do you have someone who worked as Atiku's media aide all his life as your mouthpiece against his former boss?"

@rapuchukwu, "Garba Shehu have you forgotten that Atiku was your boss for more than a decade. Don't forget your roots."

@EdreezGombawa, "Will Garba Shehu call his former boss corrupt despite all the articles he wrote way back trying to clear his name? Will he resign and declare support to his former boss? Will he continue as Buhari's spokesperson and go on a rigorous campaign to help his current boss win the election?"

@stopcorruption1, "Politics Today: People are being blackmailed, what Doyin Okupe and Reubén Abatti did in their era is now being replicated by Femi Adesina and Garba Shehu, what Obasanjo did for Buhari, same he has just done for Atiku. Our politics is the same yesterday, today and forever more."

@AyeeshaMusa1, "And so my prediction about @GarShehu played out, he finally spoke bad against his master. This same Garba Shehu that adored, damn I love the Internet"

@iam_wilsons, "It actually took Garba Shehu 4 days to write those jargons. Hmm, this @atiku man must be troubling these people in their coven."

@MrTomide, "How will Garba Shehu cope with attacking Atiku in favour of Buhari and defending Buhari against Atiku's attacks now? May our loyalty never be tested."

@YouthsForAtiku, "Empowering someone at times is bad, just take a look at Garba Shehu, Atiku made you whatever you think you are today, but such is life, may those you uplift(if any) treat you back this way in Jesus name."

Buhari Speaks On Obasanjo’s Endorsement Of Atiku For 2019 Presidential Election

Posted: 12 Oct 2018 08:26 AM PDT

President Muhammadu Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has reacted to Chief Olusegun Obasanjo's endorsement of presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Atiku Abubakar.

The former President had in a meeting held with Atiku and some PDP leaders endorsed his presidential ambition.

Obasanjo declared that Atiku will defeat the incumbent President, Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2019.

According to the ex-president, he believes that Atiku has 're-discovered and re-positioned himself' and is now good enough to enjoy his support in the next election.

Chief Obasanjo had said, "Let me start by congratulating President-to-be, Atiku Abubakar, for his success at the recent PDP Primary and I took note of his gracious remarks in his acceptance speech that it all started here."

However, President Buhari in a statement by his spokesperson, Garba Shehu, on Thursday described the meeting as a 'well rehearsed theatre', adding that both leaders will fail in 2019.

Read the statement below:

"The Presidency has received the news of former President Olusegun Obasanjo's predictable U-turn and somersault on the endorsement of the PDP candidate, Atiku Abubakar, at a meeting Thursday, and to say that we are the least surprised by the well-rehearsed theatre.

"They will lose together. Listening to the prepared statement of the former President after the meeting showed the usual ego trip and "I know it all" character of Chief Obasanjo.

"In the first place, we dare to say that a pompous statement from the former President advising Nigerians on a vote against President Buhari is the best recommendation that can come at this time.

"It also betrayed a lack of understanding of today's politics which is about good governance. The country voted for change in 2015 and a leader that ensures good governance which only President Buhari and the APC can provide.Bent on these laudable goals, we will not allow ourselves to be distracted.

"We are busy on various national issues including the restructuring and the diversification of the economy, fighting corruption, terrorism and other threats to national security; increasing the availability of electric power, improving education, health, and providing long-delayed infrastructure – roads, rail, airports and so forth.

"Many governments have come and gone, but they did not care about some of these projects.
We were talking about these things for sixteen years under the PDP and nothing was done.
President Buhari is proud of his record because his achievements are verifiable, while that of the PDP is manifested by the devastating social and economic impact of large scale corruption during their governance.

"The President will not relent in the war against corruption because the ordinary people are the ultimate victims if we surrender to corruption and let its perpetrators go unpunished.

"Abandoning the war against corruption is not an option. President Buhari is in this battle against graft because he cannot allow a few, rapacious, and selfish class of the elite to divert the resources meant for the well-being of the ordinary people to their private pockets.
Nigerians trust President Buhari in this effort because they are convinced he is not in government for personal financial benefits, or for an ego trip.

"It is just eleven years ago that the former President and Vice President in their ugly fight for power accused each other of corruption. Nigerians are yet to forget all that."

Arewa Youths Forum Discloses Who It Will Support, Explains Its Decision - Atiku vs Buhari

Posted: 12 Oct 2018 07:39 AM PDT

Atiku and Buhari

The Arewa Youth Consultative Forum, AYFC, has reacted to the emergence of former President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, as the standard bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in the 2019 presidential election.

The organization said that the 'God' that installed Muhammadu Buhari as president in 2015, will remove him and replace him with Atiku in 2019.

Speaking in an interview with DAILY POST on Friday, the President of the Arewa youths, Alhaji Yerima Shettima, also congratulated the PDP and Nigerians for the successful conduct of the party's National Convention in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, last weekend.

According to Shettima, PDP has demonstrated seriousness and maturity and has shown Nigerians that they were ready to take over power from the All Progressives Congress, APC, a party he described as a mere organization.

Shettima said that although had strongly canvassed for a young president, Atiku was an alternative to the desirable.

"For us, what happened at the PDP (National) Convention was clearly a demonstration of a people trying to sustain the country's democracy because the conduct, process of how Atiku Abubakar emerged is a clear indication that PDP has demonstrated maturity and seriousness to move the country forward.

"For us, we congratulate them and we congratulate ourselves because democracy has come to stay and that is what has been displayed and we hope Nigerians have seen all they needed to see.

"It's clear that PDP is now the only party that can give Nigeria what they truly desire. As far as I'm concern, APC's conducts, attributes and approaches to issues do not in any way portray them in good light to me or to a lot of us because the way they run the party, it is clear that it is more or less an organization owned by one individual or group of individuals and they run it the way they like without going through the processes of a political party.

"Indeed we congratulate PDP and indeed we congratulate ourselves and indeed we congratulate Nigeria.

"Indeed, if you look at Atiku's antecedent, though I'm one of the people who strongly said we needed a young president, but with the present circumstance, and the present situation of things, and sometimes if you look at what will give you answers immediately, there are steps to go for a long term and there are steps to go for a short term. For the short term, Atiku is the only solution available to us right now. And that's the only thing we have in our hand, as far as we are concerned,

"Atiku Abubakar remains the alternative. He remains the alternative because when the desirable is not achieved, then we look at the alternatives to the desirable.

"And that's exactly what we're looking at right now. We must be sure to give him all the necessary support he needs to emerge as president and save this country. He understands what democracy is all about.

"He was part of the struggle and he paid his dues. The God that gave Muhammadu Buhari the election of 2015 will definitely give Atiku 2019. We will do our own and God will decide. Nigerians have suffered a lot.

"We did not bargain for hunger; we didn't bargain for poverty; we didn't bargain for deceit; we didn't bargain for blackmails and these are the only things the president government can do for the past three and a half years."

JUST IN: Court Strikes Out Fraud Charges Against Innocent Chukwuma - Innoson vs GTBank

Posted: 12 Oct 2018 04:40 AM PDT

Innocent Chukwuma, Chairman Innoson Group of Companies

An Ikeja High Court has struck out a fraud case instituted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, against Innoson Motors and its CEO, Innocent Chukwuma.

Justice Olusola Williams struck out the case due to the inability of the prosecution to produce him in court for arraignment

In her ruling, Justice Williams said, "the prosecution is well aware that it is the duty to produce a defendant in court, this court is not inclined to continue to waste the tax of Lagos tax payers. This court cannot continue to waste precious time calling a case that is going nowhere.

"It is a criminal matter that can be instituted anytime. I advise that the prosecution gets its act together before coming to court. I am inclined to strike out this case and I so do. "

However, the prosecuting counsel, Zainab Ettu, had earlier informed the court that they have been able to effect the arrest of the 2nd defendant in order to physically serve him, claiming that he has been hiding from operatives to carry out the arrest on him.

"I think at this stage while we still pursue the arrest of the defendant, I think it behooves on the defence counsel being ministers at the temple of justice to carry out their duty to the court to ensure that they produce their client in court because they took brief from him and they can tell when who briefed them can be in court."

"They filed multiple applications but they cannot produce their client in court. We ask for an adjournment to produce the 2nd defendant in court, no matter what he cannot be above the law. We already have his warrant of arrest when the case was before Justice Moji Dada. "

In response to the prosecution and at the same time moving his motion, Counsel to the first defendant Joseph Mbaduga said, "all the defendants in this matter are being charged at the Federal High Court in Ikoyi in charge number FHC/L/565C/2015 in respect of the same subject matter and transactions in this particular charge and it is being prosecuted by the AGF.

"The charge is still pending and some facts in the case have been forwarded to the Supreme Court, while it is pending, the EFCC commenced this charge and never served any of the parties but we saw a media publication that the EFCC had filed a charge in respect of the matter at a Lagos High court.

"Going by this, we raised a preliminary objection dated 15th of January and filed on the same date as being an abuse of court processes and that the charge has not been served. And going by the norm as laid by the appellate court that it is the duty of the prosecution to produce the defendant in court and until then the court cannot exercise any jurisdiction over the defendant and the court cannot compel counsels to produce the defendants. "

However, prosecution held that "for any application to be treated on behalf of a defendant, he should be present in court, they can then decide if they want to raise an objection before he takes his plea or after.

"A fugitive cannot be asking for reliefs from a court he has not submitted to. He is very much aware of the court proceedings but refuses to submit himself to court and instead engages counsels to represent him.

"Although it is not the duty of the defence counsel to produce the defendant in court, it is highly unethical and unprofessional for them not to advise their clients properly to appear in court for justice to be done properly."

Innocent Chukwuma and his company Innoson were first brought before Justice Mojisola Dada of an Ikeja special offences court January 17 and had not appeared before the court in all the adjourned dates since then until the case was transferred from Justice Mojisola Dada in June after Innoson counsel wrote a petition in February against her asking her to disqualify herself from the case and it was transferred to the then vacation Judge sitting at Ikeja Justice Olushola Williams during the break in July.

Chukwuma and his company, Innoson Motors Nigeria Ltd., were to be arraigned on a four-count charge of conspiracy to obtain property by false pretences, stealing and forgery in a transaction with Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB).

According to the charge, the defendants committed the offences between 2009 and July 2011 in Lagos. The EFCC alleged that the defendants with intent to defraud, conspired to obtain by false pretences containers of motorcycle, spare parts and raw materials, property of GTB from Mitsui OSK Lines Ltd, Apapa, Lagos.

They are said to have fraudulently induced staff of Mitsui OSK and Maersk Line to deliver to them via their clearing agents the goods which were imported from China in the name of GTB by falsely pretending that they were authorized by the bank to clear the goods.

The prosecution claimed that the defendants in order to facilitate the fraud forged a bill of lading numbered 598286020 of Maersk Line Limited and 11007950841 of Mutsui O.S.K Lines by knowingly putting a false GTB stamp and signature of the bank staff.

The alleged forgery was in order that the forged documents be used or acted upon as genuine to the prejudice of any person within Lagos or elsewhere.

The offences contravened Sections 1(1)(b), 1(3), and 8(a) of the Advanced Fee Fraud and Other Related Offences Act 2016 and Sections 309(9), 388, 465 and 467(1)(j) of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State 2003
