Posted: 13 Oct 2018 05:53 PM PDT

The presidency has released a statement which announced the placement of travel restrictions on 50 high-profile Nigerians.

According to the statement, individuals, whose identities were not however disclosed, include those whose assets, valued at N50million and above, are subject of corruption investigation and litigation.

Garba Shehu,  presidential spokesperson, releasing the statement, said the measure is part of the implementation of Executive Order Number 6 which seeks to ensure "that all assets within a minimum value of N50 million or equivalent, subject to investigation or litigation are protected from dissipation by employing all available lawful means, pending the final determination of any corruption-related matter."

Mr Shehu added that the financial transactions of these persons of interest are also being monitored by relevant agencies to ensure the assets are not dissipated and that such persons do not interfere with, investigation and litigation processes.

Below is the full statement:

STATE HOUSE PRESS RELEASE

PRESIDENT BUHARI DIRECTS IMPLEMENTATION OF EO 6 IN FULL FORCE

Following the instant judicial affirmation of the constitutionality and legality of the Executive Order 6 (EO6), President Muhammadu Buhari has mandated the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Minister of Justice to implement the Order in full force.

To this end, a number of enforcement procedures are currently in place by which the Nigeria Immigration Service and other security agencies have placed no fewer than 50 high profile persons directly affected by EO6 on watch-list and restricted them from leaving the county pending the determination of their cases.

Also, the financial transactions of these persons of interest are being monitored by the relevant agencies to ensure that the assets are not dissipated and such persons do not interfere with, nor howsoever corrupt the investigation and litigation processes.

It is instructive to note that EO6 was specifically directed to relevant law enforcement agencies to ensure that all assets within a minimum value of N50 million or equivalent, subject to investigation or litigation are protected from dissipation by employing all available lawful means, pending the final determination of any corruption-related matter.

The Buhari administration reassures all well-meaning and patriotic Nigerians of its commitment to the fight against corruption, in accordance with the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and the general principles of the Rule of Law.

Accordingly, this administration will uphold the rule of law in all its actions and the right of citizens would be protected as guaranteed by the Constitution.

We, therefore, enjoin all Nigerians to cooperate with the law enforcement authorities towards ensuring a successful implementation of the Executive Order 6 which is a paradigm-changing policy of the Federal Government in the fight against corruption.

Atiku Is A Formidable Opponent, Whether We Admit It Or Not - APC Chieftain

Posted: 13 Oct 2018 05:06 PM PDT

Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and President Buhari

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Niger State, Dr Mohammed Santuraki, has said whether the ruling party admits it or not, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, is a "formidable opponent".

He also urged the APC to put its house in order to emerge victorious in the 2019 general election.

He stated this when he spoke with NAN in Suleja, Niger State on Saturday.

Santuraki also urged the party to address the issues related to the primaries to ensure that the APC remains united.

His words: "Whether we would like to admit or not, the presidential candidate that the main opposition party, the PDP, settled for is a formidable opponent, even if not a credible one.

"Within a week of emerging as the presidential flag bearer, he appointed his campaign team and named his running mate. This to me indicates a much needed sense of urgency. We, in APC must respond in like manner. The clock is ticking. We must push the button."

Speaking on the disagreements within the party, he highlighted the steps taken to address them and commended the party's leadership for its efforts.

He said: "I am happy to note that 10 long days after the October 2 primary elections in Niger, better judgement eventually prevailed. Agreed, it was a choice between a rock and a hard place, but it shouldn't have been a difficult choice.

"While the election results were adjudged incomplete, flawed and inconclusive in Zone A, and the results also contested in the other zones, a greater level of injustice would have been perpetrated if the tickets were auto-awarded to the incumbents.

"It is commendable that the national chairman finally accepted a more logical reasoning by awarding the victory to the presumed winners of the elections.

"I congratulate and thank Governor Abubakar Sani Bello, the senatorial aspirants, the elders and other APC stakeholders for their resolute stand on the side of our people, for fairness throughout this process. I firmly believe that a flawed democratic process is better than outright dictatorship."

Buhari’s Economic Team Has Failed Nigerians - Throwback Interview Of Festus Keyamo, SAN

Posted: 13 Oct 2018 04:39 PM PDT

Festus Keyamo, SAN

Human rights lawyer, Festus Keyamo, in this interview with ADELEKE ADESANYA says the ineptitude of President Muhammadu Buhari's economic teams is responsible for the current hardship in the country. He also speaks on sundry other national issues. Excerpts:

What is your view about the controversial FRCN code currently causing ripples and confusion in churches across the country?

Actually, I ought to have commented on the raging issue, but for now, I will cease to do so, because I am currently going through some researches on the code and the situation before I can comment on it. For now, maybe I am not in a good position to make comments on it, but because I don't want to base my comments on what people have been saying since the issue occurred. But very soon I will make a complete write up on it and I will make my own stand known to the public.

Nigerian lawmakers have showed interest in mediating in the ongoing crisis in Gambia by granting asylum to President Jameh. How do you see this, as a legal expert?

Well, anything for now that will Buhari's economic team has failed Nigerians – Festus Keyamo bring peace to Gambia as a co-West African nation is alright. But I want to say that let us not make it a habit, let us not make it what will be recurring in West Africa and Africa in general, that people should be granted a kind of immunity against prosecution, against institutions and people in power. Like I twittered sometimes, it was good news that some African leaders are conceding defeat and bad news that some of them are not doing so. I think people should be cautious of the fact that when they are in power, they will not be there forever, they will lose the power one day. In the case of Gambia, Jahmeh should be made to know that nobody is begging him to leave power. Fine, asylum is okay and may be fine, but nobody should beg him to leave the seat of power and come to have asylum in Nigeria. If he doesn't leave power, he should be chopped out of power like Lawrence Gbagbo in Cote d' Ivoire. African leaders should learn what is right. They should know that being in power will not be forever, so the greed of trying to remain in power forever should be rebuffed by them, because I wonder the kind of role model they want to be for the younger generation. I think he should be made to serve as a deterrent like Gbagbo, if he fails to leave power so that other leaders in Africa can learn from him, too.

But do you think that is what should be on our lawmakers' priority list for now, looking at the fact that Nigeria is currently facing a lot of hardship?

No matter how sick an elephant may be, it does not mean an ant is greater than an elephant. We all know that we are facing a lot in terms of the recession we are currently facing, but no matter how weak our economy is, we are still bigger than all West Africa put together. That means we are a very big brother to Gambia. And that will tell us that we should play our own roles very well. Moreover, Gambia is an English-speaking country like we are, and if anything happens in Gambia, the citizens will be heading to only Ghana or Nigeria. They will not go to the French-speaking countries. They will prefer to go to a country where they can easily blend and nobody will understand they are foreigners. So we should understand that whatever happens to Gambia, if we don't move to help them, they will surely come here because Nigeria is a big country. So, we should play our roles. And I think the lawmakers are trying to see whether they can play their own role, too. But if you ask me, I prefer asylum for Jameh to a civil war in that country.

The recent killings that occurred in Southern Kaduna have been generating reactions across the nation, especially among the Christians and political leaders, who feel somehow more affected by the killings. What is your take on this?

It is quite a pathetic case and it very disheartening that such an ugly incident will still be occurring in this country. And despite that, I will like to say that Christians and political leaders in this country should realise that it is high time they turned down ethnic connotation to this crisis. This is because the more they are doing this, the more the issue will be getting worse and more victims will be recorded. So, they should try as much as possible to be holistic. Issues in Southern Kaduna have been there over a long time. It could be traced to as far back as the Ibrahim Babangida era. And I believe that this time government should find a lasting solution to it. Be that as it may, I will say nobody should try to score cheap political point with the crisis. Instead, they should try as much as possible to be matured and contribute their quota towards ending the crisis. Nigeria needs to truly be united and this can be achieved with concerted efforts from all of us.

The Federal Government is currently disbursing N5000 to the poor in the country to cushion the effects of the hardship caused by the economic crisis. How do you see this gesture?

For me, that will not help the poor in this country. Instead, I would have preferred that jobs are created for these poor people; not that money is given to them. If you want to empower people, it is better to get them jobs through which they can make their money and earn themselves a good living; not that you give them money today and tomorrow. What if the money is no longer there to give them? But instead, if jobs are created for this people, it will give them hopes, life and even for their children because through it, some of them will sponsor their children to school and they will get something meaningful out of life. So, for me, I believe creating jobs for these people is far better than giving them N5000 stipend on monthly basis. Though I am not against it, it's a good development, government should give priority to job creation than the money they are giving to the poor as a means of ending poverty in this country.

People have been requesting that the President reshuffle his cabinet, because some of his ministers have not been performing. What is you stand on this?

I agree entirely that President Muhammadu Buhari's cabinet should be reshuffled. He needs to choose some new people to work with him in his cabinet, especially when it comes to the issue of the economy. Of course, I understand that he knows better the areas that he needs to introduce drastic changes, because he is the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces and these people work with him directly, and as such he can determine their strength. I urge him to pay special attention to the economy, like he has done well in some other areas. For instance, in fighting terrorism, he has done very well and also in the war against corruption. Though we are not there yet, efforts have been made and we can all see that he is a man that has zero tolerance for corruption. But in terms of the economy, he needs a lot of hands on deck to improve the economy.

But on the fight against corruption that you just given him a pass mark, a lot of Nigerians have said that the fight is one-sided…

There are a lot of things people don't understand. People in Buhari's government started one and a half years ago; so will he start running after people who just resumed office for probe? The people in government now will definitely be probed about their work in their various offices, but now is the time they are exercising the duties of their various offices.

In fact, most of the ministers just spent a year and few months in their various offices. There is still an ample time to look into what they have done. But presently, we are talking about those who have been in power for five years and above, those who have held this country to ransom to the extent that we landed where we are today. And at the same time, those in power now should not be carried away and be deceived that they will not be probed, because soon, they will be called upon to give account of their stewardships.

How well has the judiciary, which is regarded as the last hope of the common man, fared since the advent of this administration?

I will say it is about mixed situation. There are very good stories about the judiciary and at the same time there are ones that were not good at all, looking at judgements passed and the rest. But there have been situations where the judiciary, despite challenges, has risen to help democracy and there are instances where people in the judiciary have had to face the reality of life. It has always been ups and downs like it used to be. But in evaluation, so far the Nigerian judiciary has helped our democracy a lot

Reasons APC Senators Dish Plans To Impeach Saraki – Senate Leader

Posted: 13 Oct 2018 04:06 PM PDT

Senator Ahmed Lawan, Senate Leader

Senators of the All Progressive Congress (APC) have dished their initial plan of impeaching Dr. Bukola Saraki, the president of the 8th Senate.

Mr Saraki who emerged the leader of the National Assembly has not been in good terms with the APC even while he was in their fold.

Since his emergence, against the wish of the ruling party, several attempt to oust the top lawmaker from his position have often met brick wall.

His defection to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) recently made the APC to openly call on him to relinquish the position. Mr Saraki, however, vowed to remain in office because he enjoys the support of majority members of the chamber.

Threatening Saraki, the lawmakers of the ruling party vowed to oust the Senate President when the house resumed from recess on Tuesday. On resumption no drama of sought has taken place thereby suggesting that the APC Senators may have backed down.

Addressing State House correspondents on Friday, the Senate Leader, Ahmed Lawan, who heads the APC caucus at the upper chamber said they decided to drop the plans because of national interest which supersedes those of the party.

"We definitely have to bury our hatchets for us to work for Nigeria and Nigerians. Perhaps that might have informed the disappointment of many people that there will be crisis in the National Assembly," Mr Lawan said after meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari.

"I don't know what informed your view to anticipate crisis but let me tell you that National Assembly will continue to remain focus on national issues, we must be patriotic, nationalistic.

"We must put national interest above individual, parochial or partisan interest.

"Let me also say that disagreements are usual. In fact, there are very practical components of any parliament, when you have two to three parties or even within parties, you will have views that may differ.

"It is traditional, it is usual for us to disagree. Maybe these disagreements may crop up and some other issues. But for now, our focus is on national interest.

"The National Assembly is a Nigerian parliament and therefore the best thing to do is to ensure that Nigerians gets a good deal and for now the good deal is for Nigeria to have all those pending request of Mr President approved by the National Assembly.

"I think the national interest for now overrides any other interest.

"Our intention is to ensure that Mr President doesn't lack from inactivity of the National Assembly. That whatever he requests, the fundamental aspects especially will be attended to. This is our determination both as APC senators. In fact as Senate and National Assembly."

Pay Senator Omo-Agege Or Go To Jail – Judge Warns Saraki

Posted: 13 Oct 2018 06:19 AM PDT

Senator Ovie Omo-Agege

The Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki has been warned by a judge to pay Senator Ovie Omo-Agege his entitlements due to the Senator or risk contempt of court.

The Federal High Court on Thursday warned the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, over the contempt proceedings initiated against him by the Delta-Central senator, Ovie Omo-Agege.

Omo-Agege had initiated the committal proceedings praying that Saraki be sent to prison as punishment for flouting the May 10 judgement of the court which ordered him (Omo-Agege) to be reinstated from illegal suspension and be paid all his accrued benefits for the period of the voided suspension.

The hearing of the committal proceedings was scheduled for Thursday, but the alleged contemn-or and his lawyers were absent from court.

Ruling on a request by Omo-Agege's lawyer, Dr. Alex Izinyon (SAN), to have the committal application heard despite the absence of the defence, Justice Nnamdi Dimgba said he was more inclined to giving the Senate President another chance to "remedy the alleged wrong" or appear in court to defend himself.

Justice Dimgba noted that the application was truly "ripe for hearing," as argued by Izinyon, as the court's records showed that Saraki had been served with the motion on notice and hearing notice for the Thursday's proceedings via a newspaper publication of September 25, 2018 as earlier ordered by the court.

The judge, however, said he would give Saraki another chance to remedy the alleged wrong or appear in court to defend himself.

He also directed Izinyon to write the Senate President and the legal department of the Senate, informing them of the adjournment of the proceedings till October 18.
