APC Crisis: Oshiomhole Cries Out About APC Governors’ Plot Against Him

Posted: 22 Oct 2018 06:10 PM PDT

Comrade Adams Oshiohmole

Comrade Adams Oshiohmole, the National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), on Monday dismissed as untrue the reported gang-up by APC governors against his leadership of the party.

Oshiohmole, who responded to questions from State House correspondents in Abuja, said only one or two out of the 23 state governors under the platform of the APC were vehemently opposed to his leadership style.

The APC National said: "Maybe there is one or two governors who have issues and those issues can only be resolved democratically within the spirit, the letter and all the relevant positions of the APC constitution, the APC Election guidelines and of course the Electoral Act.

"The Electoral Act is completely blind and our party's rules also are completely blind to power but it's sensitive to procedures; it is sensitive to processes.

"The good news is that overwhelming majority (of the governors), we have about 23 governors, I think maybe one or two may have some situations they would like to see differently.

"But that is the way the world is, but we should uphold the rules. But, it is not correct to suggest that there is a move to remove me.
"Yes, one governor has publicly said he would ensure that I'm removed – that is fine. The beauty of democracy is anyone or two could say something but the majority is what matters.

"But even those two when they have deeper reflection would recognize that what I have done is to stubbornly insist that the rules are obeyed, nothing more nothing less.''

Oshiohmole, who described the ongoing political outcry in some quarters as his finest moment, said he would continue to support the interest of the ordinary members of the party against those of the powerful elements or political bigwigs.

He said he was very encouraged by the level of participation of members of the party in the political processes including the just concluded party's primaries across the country, the Daily Post reports.

Oshiohmole, however, declined comment on the Monday's Supreme Court ruling which set aside an interim order of the Court of Appeal in Port Harcourt, which gave the APC, the go ahead to conduct its Ward, Local Government and State Congresses in Rivers State.

He said he needed lawyers' interpretation of the ruling before passing any comment.

2019 General Election: Oyedepo Calls For Prayer & Fasting Against Wicked Politicians

Posted: 22 Oct 2018 05:35 PM PDT

Bishop David Oyedepo

Bishop David Oyedepo, the founder and presiding Bishop of the Living Faith Church Worldwide, aka Winners Chapel, has declared a seven-day prayer and fast against wicked politicians and any impending calamity ahead of 2019 general elections.

The clergy man announced this in a memo read to the congregation during the service at Faith Tabernacle, Ota, on Sunday.

He urged all Christians in the country to join the prayer and fast programme which would start from Monday, October 22 and end on October 28 to call on God to save the nation from wicked politicians, who he said were ready to wreck the nation in order to achieve their personal political ambition.

The Bishop said, "Recent elections that held in some states and some quarters across Nigeria are pointers to the need for divine intervention for the rescue of our nation to avert the breakdown of law and order in the forthcoming general elections in this coming year.

"Political thuggery has assumed a new dimension in Nigeria, where many voters were not able to access the polling booths because they did not belong to the group that must win. Some even resisted access even to the point of killing the opposition.

"If anyone is not sure of returning home from going to cast his vote and would not want to risk his life for that, how then do we determine the winner

"This is how much the soul of Nigeria is in distress and would require divine intervention for rescue.

"There is nothing wrong with a 'must win' determination, that is what the spirit of sportsmanship is all about, but this must be channelled through legitimate means only and not by killing the people one claims he wants to serve.

"Today, we cannot tell how much arms some individuals or group may have piled up to accomplish their political ambitions, by being determined to kill innocent Nigerians that may stand in their way. We have no choice but to pray for God to heal our land and deliver us from all forms of election crises."

Saraki, Dogara Eulogize Nigerian Lawmakers

Posted: 22 Oct 2018 03:08 PM PDT

Dr. Bukola Saraki, Nigeria Senate President

Dr. Bukola Saraki, Nigeria's Senate President and Hon. Yakubu Dogara, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, have underscored the important roles the National Assembly has played in helping save Nigeria from collapse.

The two leaders, who spoke Monday at the convocation ceremony of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS)/University of Benin Post Graduate Programmes for the 2015/2016 and 2016/2017 academic sessions, held at the National Assembly premises, said lawmakers in the eighth National Assembly have committed themselves to improving the lives of Nigerians.

According to Saraki, who is the chairman, NILDS Governing Council, the core legislative, oversight and representative functions of the legislature is to contribute to the quality of governance.

"There is no gainsaying the fact that the core legislative, oversight and representative functions of the legislature provide an essential contribution to the quality of our democracy and governance as a whole.

"In the eighth National Assembly, the legislature has played a greater role in policy formulation and has engaged more robustly with the Executive at the various stages of policy formulation. This stems from our conviction that the task of nation-building must be a collective one, and this sometimes requires sacrifices on the part of the individual.

"Many of the legislative measures we have pursued since 2015 have been targeted at driving productivity, easing access to finance, creating jobs and improving livelihoods. Legislative proposals in this area are focused on Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), particularly in reducing regulatory burdens and easing access to capital, with the objective of having a large number of sustainable fast-growing small and mid-size businesses. We have also taken legislative action to tackle tax avoidance and evasion, to encourage compliance with tax obligations by all persons.

"We have shown commitment to the need to develop our education sector, with a special focus on improving the quality of primary and secondary education, which have suffered from lack of investment and infrastructural provision. Our vision is to see to the attainment of 100 per cent literacy rate for all Nigerian children aged 12 and below. The Senate has also amended the Universal Basic Education (UBE) Act to ensure that the two per cent budgetary allocation to Universal Basic Education Commission by the central government is increased to three per cent," Saraki noted.

Also listing aspects of basic healthcare and human capital development as areas that have attracted the attention of the lawmakers, Saraki attributed the successes recorded by the legislators to the professional permanent staff and legislative aides, describing them as the "main resource for continuity and sustainable change in a legislative bureaucracy".

Also noting that the National Assembly has helped save Nigeria from collapse, Speaker Dogara said to attain stable, strong and effective governance in Nigeria, the National Assembly must receive priority attention in terms of capacity building.

Arguing that the legislature is the true face of democracy, especially in maturing democracies such as Nigeria, where it serves as the stabilising force with robust constitutional powers to check-mate the executive misuse and abuse of power, Dogara said it is preferable to build healthy and strong institutions like the legislature than strong personalities.

"It is our considered opinion that if there is any institution of government that should receive priority attention in terms of capacity building, it is the legislature. This is because the legislature is the true face of democracy. In our maturing democracy in this country, the legislature is the stabilising force as it has robust constitutional powers to check-mate the executive misuse and abuse of power which occasionally rears its head.

"Credit must be given to the Nigerian parliament, which has continued to make laws, perform its representative functions and make robust use of the power of oversight in order to preserve our hard-won democracy and achieve good governance," he said.

According to Dogara, "A key factor in moving from a nominal democracy to democracy that delivers development results for people is an effective legislature that holds the executive to account, especially in developing countries burdened by weak governance structures like Nigeria. Whereas much work has been done on strengthening executive leadership, not much attention has been paid to systematically building the capacity of the legislature to effectively contribute to national development."

He said in the last two decades, the Nigerian legislature contributed to providing better governance in Nigeria by setting unprecedented record in the areas of lawmaking, which has translated to stimulating economic growth and prompting competition.

"What is expected of modern legislatures goes beyond the traditional role of representation, lawmaking and oversight. The legislature in Nigeria must serve a greater purpose within wider national democratisation processes. Over the last two decades, the National Assembly has transitioned from being the weaker institution to becoming a strong and capable agent of change. Our activism in the area of lawmaking is attested to by the unprecedented record we have set in the area of lawmaking. Some of these laws are specifically designed to stimulate economic growth and promote competition. We have also successfully intervened in crises situations to save the country from avoidable collapse," he added.

It has been reported that over 200,000 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members and supporters of former Vice President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar have defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

According to the report, the  defecting Atiku's loyalists who are members of the 'Atiku Care Foundation' in the North-West Zone on Sunday dumped the Foundation and collapsed into Arewa Media Group Organisation for Buhari 2019 Campaign.

At a brief ceremony, chairman of the amalgamated group under the auspices of Atiku Care Foundation, Comrade Sanusi Ababai, said over seven affiliates of the Atiku Care Foundation supporters, decided to dump Atiku for the reelection of President Buhari because of unfulfilled promises.

Comrade Sanusi Ababai said: "For several years now, we have been working hard for the development of Atiku Care Foundation. A lot of promises were made when we started.

"They told us that Alhaji Atiku Abubakar needed a platform to reach out to the masses at the grassroot. We were committed because there were programmes from healthcare delivery, education, entrepreneurship, youth and women empowerment."

Ababai, former Director of Administration and Strategy in-charge of North-West for Atiku Care Foundation, said the group has decided to pitch its tent with President Muhammadu Buhari's 2019 re-election bid for his foresight and commitment to redeem Nigeria from the shackles of corruption and poverty.

SMEs FINANCING: Fidelity Bank Receives $50m Credit Lifeline From AfDB

Posted: 22 Oct 2018 05:30 AM PDT

Fidelity Bank Plc

The African Development Bank (AfDB), has approved a $50 million line of credit to Nigeria's Fidelity Bank Plc to support small and medium enterprises financing.

The money is also meant to support women-owned enterprises in selected transformative sectors, including close to a hundred SMEs in manufacturing, health and education.

Approved by the bank's Board on October 10, 2018, the facility is fully dedicated to financing micro, small and medium sized enterprises (MSMEs), with a minimum of 30 percent going to women-owned enterprises.

The loan will enhance Fidelity Bank's liquidity and help meet the demand for medium-term funding to players in the target sectors, contributing to improved quality of lives, job and wealth creation and tax-revenue generation for the government.

The facility complements the Federal Government's long-term development strategy, as espoused in its Vision 2020 agenda.

Aligned with Nigeria's Economic Recovery and Growth Plan 2017-2020 (ERPG), the funding will ultimately boost enterprise competitiveness and expand Nigeria's economic base.

The ERPG seeks to stimulate the country's economic growth, catalyse macroeconomic stability, foster diversification of the economy, and enhance social inclusion as well as governance.

According to AfDB, SMEs account for 30 percent of Fidelity Bank's loan portfolio.

The selection of the tier 2 Nigerian bank for this seven-year credit facility (with a grace period of two years) is based on its strong niche presence in the SME and mid-sized corporate space.

It is also in recognition of the bank's credit management and strong track record with the African Development Bank. The Nigerian lender had previously received US$18 million and US$75 million lines of credit from the development finance institution in 2001 and 2013, respectively.

"Fidelity Bank is a niche player, focused on the SME space and this US$50 million credit line will contribute to strengthening its presence in its key market segments," said Ebrima Faal, Senior Director, Nigeria Country Office at the African Development Bank.

"The Nigerian financial institution also continues to meet its ongoing credit obligations under the terms of previous support received from the African Development Bank."

The line of credit to Fidelity Bank is consistent with the bank's Ten-Year Strategy (2013–2022). It also aligns with two of its High 5 priorities – Industrialize Africa and Improve the quality of life for the people of Africa.

Founded in 1987, Fidelity Bank Plc has grown from its marginal position into a stable banking institution.
Currently the 10th largest commercial bank in Nigeria by asset size, it was listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange in May 2005.

It has a broad client base of about four million customers nationwide, served from a network of over 240 branches and business offices, supported by alternative service delivery channels like ATMs, mobile and electronic banking, and agency banking channels.

Following its renewed digital banking and retail drive, Fidelity Bank was ranked 4th best bank in Nigeria in the retail market segment in the KPMG Banking Industry Customer Satisfaction Survey (BICSS) in 2017.
