Atiku Set To Pick Running Mate From South East

Posted: 08 Oct 2018 04:18 PM PDT

Atiku Abubakar

Following the victory of his Excellency Atiku Abubakar at the just concluded Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Presidential primary election, is said to be set to pick his running mate from the South East region of the country, for next year's general elections.

The former vice-president emerged as the flag bearer of the PDP, on Sunday, during their presidential primary in Port Harcourt, the Rivers state capital.

Atiku polled 1,532 votes out of total of 3,221 votes, representing almost 50% of the entire delegates' votes.

His closest rival, Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State scored 693 votes, while Senate President Bukola Saraki came third with 317 votes.

Punch reports that Atiku's search for a vice-president, may have been limited to the South East.

However, some states in the five states that made up the zone, might have reportedly been disqualified.

For instance, Anambra, where Senator Ben Obi who was a former running mate to Atiku hails from, was said to have been disqualified.

The reason being that the state had produced two former Speakers, two former presidents of the Senate, one vice president and a President.

Also, Enugu State which is a PDP-controlled state, was said to have produced a former national chairman of the PDP. The state has also produced the Deputy Senate President for the past seven and half years.

For Imo State, it has produced a former deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives and had also produced a Senate President.

The search is said to be between Abia and Ebonyi states.

Court Summons Saraki, Dogara, Akpabio, 52 Others Over Defection

Posted: 08 Oct 2018 01:08 PM PDT

Senator Saraki and Honourable Dogara

Days after Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, Speaker House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, a former Minority Leader, Godswill Akpabio and 52 others who dumped their party to achieve their aspirations in other political parties, a Federal High Court in Abuja has given them a 30-day ultimatum within which to explain why they would not lose their seats at the National Assembly in accordance with Section 68 (1) (g) of the 1999 Constitution.

The court, in a suit initiated by an advocacy group—the Legal Defence and Assistance Project (LEDAP) said Saraki and 55 others must appear before it to explain why they would not forfeit their seats in accordance with Section 68 following their defection to other political parties.

The court on September 14 had insisted that Saraki and other defendants should make appearance before it on or before October 12 on why they would not lose their seats at the National Assembly.

In the suit, LEDAP and its lawyer, Mr. Chino Edmund Obiagwu, had asked the court to declare Saraki and others' seat vacant in accordance with Section 68 of the 1999 Constitution.

According to Obiagwu, Saraki, Dogara, Akpabio and 52 others had no business at the National Assembly on the grounds that the political party on which they were elected into the lawmaking house had been abandoned by them contrary to Section 68 of the Constitution.

Besides, LEDAP and Obiagwu asked the court to grant an order of mandamus to compel Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu and Dogara to declare their seats and that of 52 others vacant with a view to allowing Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) conduct bye-elections into the vacant seats.

They, however, asked the court to declare the following reliefs among others:

•A declaration that by virtue of Section 68 (I) (g) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), any member of the National Assembly who resigns from the political party that sponsored his election into the National Assembly, before the expiration of the term for which he was elected, automatically loses his seat in the Assembly, unless saved by the exception under that section.

•A declaration that the 1st to 52nd defendant s are no longer members of the National Assembly and as such are no longer entitled to receive remunerations due to a member of the National Assembly and that any or such remunerations received by the 1st to 52nd defendants after the date of defection must be refunded to the Federal Government.

•A declaration that by virtue of the provisions of Section 57 of the Constitution and Section 8 (2) (d) of the Legislative Houses (Powers And Privileges) Act 2018, it is unconstitutional and a punishable offence for the1st to 52nd defendants to continue sitting as Senators and Honorable members of the National Assembly after defecting from the parties that sponsored their elections into the National Assembly.

•A declaration that effective from the date of defection, any debate or motion before the National Assembly that any of the 151 to 52nd defendants participates in or votes on, is null and void.

•An order of mandamus, compelling the Deputy Senate President and the Speaker of the House of Representatives to declare the seats of 1st to 52nd defendants in their respective chambers vacant.

•An order directing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct bye-elections in the federal constituencies and senatorial zones of the defendants within the time frame allowed under the Electoral Act.

Specifically, LEDAP and Obiagwu asked the court to determine whether by virtue of Section 68 (I) (g) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), any member of the National Assembly who defected from the party that sponsored his election into the National Assembly, before the expiration of the term for which he was elected would not automatically lose his seat in the Assembly, unless saved by the exception under that section?

Other questions posed before the court by LEDAP and Obiagwu are whether by virtue of section 68(2) of the Constitution, the Deputy Senate President and the Speaker of the House of Representatives are not bound by duty to declare the seats of the 1st to 52nd defendant s in the Senate and the House of Representatives as the case may be, vacant?

•Whether by virtue of the provisions of Section 57 of the Constitution, it is not an offence for the 1st to 52nd defendants to continue sitting and voting in the National Assembly, after resigning from the party that sponsored their elections into the National Assembly?

•Whether the Independent National Electoral Commission is under a legal obligation to conduct bye-elections in the senatorial zones and the federal constituencies of the defendants as the case may be, within the time frame provided under the electoral Act?

LEDAP and Obiagwu had on 14th September 2018, approached the court to declare Saraki, Dogara, Akpabio's seat vacant for defecting to other political parties.

Sued also are Senators Dino Melaye, Rabiu Kankwaso, Lanre Tejuoso, Shaaba Lafiagi, Rafiu Ibrahim, Barnabas Gemade, Abdulazeez Nyako, Monsurat Sunmonu, Usman Nafada, Suleiman Hunkuyi, Ibrahim Danbaba, Ubale Shittu, lsah Misau, Suleiman Azif and 45 others.

What Gov. Wike Said After Closed-Door Meeting With PDP Flagbearer - Atiku Vs Buhari

Posted: 08 Oct 2018 12:28 PM PDT

Governor Nyesom Wike

Nyesom Wike, the Rivers State Governor, has declared that the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, will do everything possible to ensure it takes over power from the All Progressives Congress, APC, in 2019.

The Governor made the remark while addressing reporters after a closed-door meeting with the party's Presidential flag bearer, Atiku Abubakar in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Sunday.

Wike met with the Waziri of Adamawa shortly after the presidential primaries.

The former vice president had emerged winner of the PDP primary election over the weekend after scoring 1532 votes to beat 12 other contestants who had vied for the party's ticket.

However, speaking after the meeting, Wike said, "All PDP people are happy. We are one family, you may support aspirant A or aspirant B but once somebody has emerged, you owe it a duty to make sure that your party returns to power.

The Governor, described the APC as the "most inefficient and ineffective" party in government, adding that the ruling party had failed Nigerians, DAILY POST reports.

Wike said, "We have no party that will salvage the country other than the PDP. A candidate has emerged and we owe it a duty to see that the party takes over from the most inefficient and ineffective party in control of the federal government.

"So, we are doing everything we can to make sure that we don't give any gap for APC. They have failed Nigerians and we will do everything to take over in 2019."

The governor also stated that all hands must be on deck for Abubakar.

"My happiness today is that the convention was successful and it went on without hitches.

In his remarks, Abubakar thanked the governor for hosting the convention. He said the country needs to chart a new direction in the interest of the people.

"I came to personally congratulate the governor, the people and government of Rivers state for hosting a most successful convention," he said.

"The entire country needs a new government. Definitely, we don't need APC to return to power in 2019."

Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, the Senate President,  has said that the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, will not go into disintegration following former Vice President Atiku Abubakar's emergence as the Presidential flag bearer of the party, at the just concluded national convention of the party held in Port Harcourt.

Saraki in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity Yusuph Olaniyonu, and made available to DAILY POST on Monday morning, said that those hoping that the opposition party will be rocked by crisis had already miscalculated, vowing to do all within his power to ensure PDP's victory in 2019.

"Our just concluded convention was a partisan event which the country can show-case as an example that democracy has a future in Nigeria and that when we are determined we can elect our leaders without any manipulation, intimidation and violation of the law and democratic norms.

"The credit goes to the leadership of our party led by Prince Uche Secondus, the organizing committee led by Governor Okowa, the numerous delegates who came from across the country and conducted themselves in a civil, mature and democratic manner. I give kudos to them.

"My commendation also goes to the government and people of Rivers State for providing the best necessary facilities for hosting over 5000 delegates, campaign workers, security personnel, observers, media people and others who came to play one role or the other in the convention.

"Those who expect that the party will degenerate into crisis after the primaries have miscalculated. We will all work for the Atiku-PDP ticket to succeed and contribute ideas into solving the problems confronting Nigeria today. The event in Port Harcourt between yesterday and today was a victory for Nigeria and for democracy. We will not lose the momentum but sustain it to rebuild Nigeria and elect Alhaji Atiku Abubakar as the next President of Nigeria.

"I wish all our delegates and other participants in the convention journey mercies back home", Saraki stated.

See Reasons Gov. Abubakar Will Dump Buhari For Atiku In 2019 – APC Chieftain

Posted: 08 Oct 2018 06:35 AM PDT

Governor Mohammed Abubakar of Bauchi State

Nasiru Darazo, an All Progressives Congress, APC, chieftain in Bauchi State, has alleged that Governor Mohammed Abubakar of Bauchi State would rather support the 2019 ambition of former vice president, Abubakar Atiku, who on Sunday, emerged  the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, presidential flag bearer.

According to media reports, the APC chieftain has lamented that party supporters in the state were in disarray and aggrieved following "the illegality and irregularities of the party's so-called primary election".

Darazo exclusively told DAILY POST on Monday in Bauchi that Governor Abubakar is a known Atiku's errand boy in politics.

"In fact, Governor Abubakar is well known with Atiku in politics , so the emergence of the former President as PDP presidential candidate is a slap to President Buhari in Bauchi state because APC will surely lose to PDP," he claimed.

Darazo stressed that Governor Abubakar allegedly voted against Buhari and supported Atiku in the APC presidential primary in Lagos in 2014.

The party chieftain warned the APC national headquarters not to be deceived by the political posture of Governor Abubakar of his support for Buhari to win in the state come 2019.

"Abubakar will lose to the opposition in Bauchi and it will affect Buhari's chances, especially now that no primary election was held in the state but imposed by the same Abubakar," Darazo said.

Darazo warned that if nothing was eventually done to replace Governor Abubakar as the APC gubernatorial candidate in Bauchi, nothing would prevent the party from losing to the PDP in 2019, stressing that Buhari's chance of winning the presidential election in Bauchi is now slim.

From The Day I Nominated Atiku To Be My Vice, He Set His Mind Not For Any Good – OBJ

Posted: 08 Oct 2018 06:00 AM PDT

Chief Olusegun Obasanjo and Atiku Abubakar

Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, Nigeria's former President is for sure not a fan of Atiku Abubakar, his former vice-president, who is now the presidential flag bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Obasanjo's  numerous testimonials about his former deputy, Aiku Abubakar are currently trending online.

The 72 year-old former customs officer, emerged on Sunday as the opposition's standard bearer for the 2019 election, to face incumbent Muhammadu Buhari.

Nigeria's Twitterati have been dredging out Atiku's testimonial as given by Obasanjo, who said in a BBC TV interview why he will never support Atiku for Nigeria's highest office. He even stated the reason in his book, about his eight-year presidency.

"God will never forgive me " –

— Yekini Nabena (@ynabena) October 7, 2018

Here is Obasanjo's testimonial in the book, My Watch:

"From the day I nominated Atiku to be my vice, he set his mind not for any good, benefit or service of the country, but on furiously planning to upstage, supplant or remove me at all cost and to take my place.

"That was what I brought him for, but he was impatient and over-ambitious. He was not ready to learn and to wait. His marabout, who predicted that despite being elected as governor, he would not be sworn in as a governor, which happened, also assured him that he would take over from me in a matter of months rather than years.

"All his plans, appointments of people and his actions were towards the actualisation of his marabout's prediction. Once I realised his intention and programme, I watched him like a hawk without giving any indication of what I knew and letting down my guard. I could not succumb to the distraction, diversion and malevolence of an ambitious but unwise deputy.

"The work in hand was more important than a confrontational relationship with my deputy, a man over whom I knew I had far more experience and outreach in all matters. To alert him of what I knew he was up to, would only lead to lying, denial, more mischievous plans and more duplicity on his part.

"He was better managed that way. What was important was not allowing myself to be surprised or outmanoeuvred by him. I must always seize the initiative and know what was going on if not in his mind, but at least in his camp. That I did very effectively.

"Sometime in the fourth quarter of 2004, an associate of Atiku came to my residence at the Aso Villa from Atiku's official residence. He felt uncomfortable and I tried to make him feel at ease. Then, he settled to tell me the story of what had just transpired in Atiku's residence. I listened with rapt attention. "He went on to say that Atiku told him that for him to become the President of Nigeria, the 2007 elections were only a formality.

"The seven ingredients he needed for his enthronement were already in his hands. He controlled the National Assembly because both the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives were in his pocket. He controlled twenty-eight out of thirty-six governors. He had control of the media. His influence over the judiciary was overwhelming.

"What he needed was foreign endorsement and for that he had employed two lobby groups in the US and one in the UK. And finally, the money for the elections was in his purse.

"When the man finished, I thanked him without passing any comment. The man was surprised at my reaction and asked, 'You have nothing to say to these?' I said that I had nothing to say and I immediately called my ADC, Chris Jemitola, to play a game of squash with me.

"On our way to the squash court with my ADC, I said, 'People at times make plans and leave God out of their plans.' My casual remark struck Chris and he said, 'Sir, that was a profound statement.' I said that I made the statement because of what I had just heard of Atiku's plan. I was not convinced he had put God in his plans.

"Atiku was confident and God was laughing. Most of Atiku's ingredients soon started to fall out of place one by one. The first was the party, PDP.

"He thought I was powerless and had no clue about the execution of his plan with his group; part of his attack on me was for national chairman of the party to give the first salvo, then other things would follow as his grip on the party would be firm and consolidated.

"That salvo came in the form of a letter to me from the chairman of the party, Audu Ogbeh, who had fully defected with (Iyorchia) Ayu to Atiku.

"The letter, which was not the product of any issue or matter discussed with or at any party meeting, came suddenly. When I received it, I could read the sinister intention behind it.

"I spent that night writing my reply and I sent it in the morning. My reply was clear. I wondered why Atiku and his group did not realise that with my reply, the battle line was clear or maybe they thought that the seven ingredients would remain intact to the end.

"My assistants had moles within the Atiku group. Anything that they planned would be reported. That was the case after Ogbeh's letter. They decided that Ogbeh should appear remorseful and come with the National Working Committee to apologise to me. It was not from their hearts, but to lure me to a 'killing ground'.

"All pieces of information that were reported were verified because it would not come from only one informant.

"Timely information is a very important principle of war and also of politics. In politics, just as in war, what matters is not just your plan, but knowledge of your opponent's plan. Knowing their plan, I had the choice of playing along with them or being firm, I chose the latter.

"I told Ogbeh that my relationship with him as national chairman and me as national leader of the party was based on mutual confidence and trust. But with his letter, my reply and what I knew of him then, I could no longer work with him in confidence and trust.

"There were only two choices left for both of us in our best interest and that of the party – he, leaves as chairman or I leave as leader of the party.

"The following Sunday, I called at his house, which I had done on several occasions in the past when there was an important party matter to discuss. This time, I asked him to give me an undated letter of resignation as the national chairman.

"I waited, he gave me but it was wrongly addressed to me rather than to the national secretary of the party as stipulated in the party's constitution.

"Ogbeh reported to his group and it was decided by them to play on and to wait for my disgrace whenever I presented a letter of resignation not addressed to the national secretary.

"The informants did their job and I, once again, paid another visit to Ogbeh at his residence. He entertained me to a meal and drink, and changed the addressee on his letter of resignation."

The Testimonial given in August 2018 in an interview with PremiumTimes:

"How can I be on the same side with Atiku?" Mr Obasanjo asked. "To do what?"

"If I support Atiku for anything, God will not forgive me. If I do not know, yes. But once I know, Atiku can never enjoy my support," he added.

"I do not have personal grudges with anyone," Mr Obasanjo said. "If you do not do well for Nigeria, you do not do well for all of us."

"It is not a question of working with or not working with an individual," he said. "If you are working for the good of Nigeria, I am working with you. If you are not working for the good of Nigeria it does not matter who you are I am not working with you."

"Most of you do not understand the way I operate," Mr Obasanjo said. "And I thought your own paper will understand better."

"I know Atiku very well. And I have mentioned my position with Atiku. My position has not changed," he said.

"If my children are getting married, he has sent representatives. If his children are getting married, I have sent representatives. That is social. That is not political".

What Pastor Tunde Bakare Said About Emergence Of Atiku As PDP Presidential Candidate

Posted: 08 Oct 2018 03:04 AM PDT

Pastor Tunde Bakare

Pastor Tunde Bakare, the Senior Pastor and founder of Latter Rain Assembly,  on Sunday congratulated Alhaji Atiku Abubakar on his emergence as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate.

Bakare, said Atiku's victory would make the 2019 election keen and interesting.
The Man of God, said this while speaking to newsmen in Ikeja.

According to the Pastor, the emergence of Atiku was a welcome development as it meant the battle for the presidency would be a tough contest between him and President Muhammadu Buhari.

He added that both the president, who is the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and Abubakar were equal match and it was Nigerians who would decide between the two.

"I congratulate him (Abubakar), he makes the issue in 2019 more robust.

"It is not going an eaglet versus an eagle but an eagle versus eagle: an old eagle versus new eagle and probably both of them old eagles.

"I wish president Muhammadu Buhari the best in 2019.

"He has the power of incumbency and he will do his best to win the election, but Atiku is not going to take No for an answer when the two forces collide in the election," he said.

Bakare said Abubakar, just like Buhari, had the experience, the exposure and the acceptance expected of the country's president.

He, however, pointed out that having those qualities alone would not translate into the victory for him, as the electorate would decide the parameters on which to elect the next president.

"I can't say Atiku will win or lose. You see, I am not advocating for him. Among all the aspirants who contested the PDP's ticket with him, he is perhaps the most cosmopolitan,he is a Wazobia man.

"He was Vice-President for eight years, and he inherited something from late Yaradua that he had held on to so effectively.

"He has been a businessman with a business acumen and he has the exposure.

"But you see, that is not what qualifies you to win. A lot comes into play, so again, I can not say whether he will win or lose," NAN quoted him as saying.
