Posted: 13 Nov 2018 12:42 AM PST

Senator Hope Uzodinma

The Special Presidential Investigation Panel For Recovery of Public Property has provided reasons it arrested the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Senator Hope Uzodinma, on Sunday.

Okoi Obono-Obla, Chairman of the panel, said the lawmaker, who represents Imo West at the National Assembly, was arrested at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Daily Post reports.

He disclosed that the panel was investigating the lawmaker over his company's failure to execute contract of $12 million for the dredging of Calabar channel awarded by Nigerian Port Authority, NPA.

"This evening, at about 8.20pm, operatives of the Special Presidential Investigation Panel For Recovery of Public Property at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport arrested the APC governorship candidate in Imo State, Hope Uzodinma.

"He was disembarking from an Air Peace P47324 flight from Lagos.

"The panel is investigating economic sabotage against Senator Uzodinma arising out of the failure of his company to execute a contract of $12m for the dredging of Calabar channel awarded by the NPA," Obono-Obla, said in a brief statement.

Nigeria: 40 Million Nigerians Suffering From Mental Disorders - FG

Posted: 13 Nov 2018 12:22 AM PST

HIV

The federal government yesterday said an estimated 40 million Nigerians are believed to be suffering from mental disorders.

Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Health, Abdulaziz Mashi Abdullahi, stated this at the ongoing mental health action committee and stakeholders workshop in Abuja. Abdullahi, who attributed the country's high burden of mental disorders to inadequate attention paid to mental illnesses, misconceptions and lack of awareness on the part of the Nigerian public, said more people will be disabled by psychological challenges than complications arising from HIV/AIDS, heart disease, accidents, and wars combined by the year 2020.

He identified ways of addressing the country's mental health burden to include: fast-tracking the enactment of the Mental Health Act as well as the resuscitation of the national mental health action committee for the coordination of stakeholders' activities on mental health and psychosocial supports in the country.

He said: "In Nigeria, an estimated 20-30 per cent of our populations are believed to suffer from mental disorders. This is a very significant number considering Nigeria has an estimated population of over 200 million.

"Unfortunately, the attention given to mental health disorders in Nigeria is inadequate. The level of awareness of the Nigerian public on mental health issues is also understandably poor, and with lots of misconceptions.

"By 2020, it is estimated that common mental disorders such as depression, anxiety, and substance abuse-related disorders, will disable more people than complications arising from HIV/AIDS, heart disease, accidents, and wars combined! This is an astonishing statistic and possesses serious questions as to why mental health disorders are not given the needed attention that it currently receives.

"A policy for mental health services delivery was developed with several key provisions of the policy, including establishing a body at the Federal Ministry of Health to focus on Mental Health issues.

"Some of the pertinent issues is how to address and dialogue with stakeholders on the burden of mental health, intimate them on the Mental Health policy, identify ways to fast track the enactment of the Mental Health Act and modalities for resuscitating the National mental health action committee for coordinating the activities of various stakeholders on mental health and Psychosocial supports in Nigeria."

Also speaking, the Director of Public Health in the ministry, Dr. Evelyn Ngige, described the Nigeria's statistics on mental health disorders as damning considering the current economic hardships in the country.

Her words: "Considering the current economic situation in the country, the above statistics are damning and in the light of the recent suicidal episodes recorded in parts of Lagos (which are obviously a tip of the iceberg), it forces a rethink in our general attitudes to mental health and questions our current maintenance of the status quo."

In his remarks, Dr. Rex Mpaazange, the WHO Lead on Communicable and Non-communicable Diseases Intervention, also lamented Nigeria's high burden of mental health disorders; noting that "People with severe mental disorders - moderate to severe depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders - generally have a life-expectancy 10-20 years shorter than the general population."

LATEST: Ohanaeze Banned From South East Indefinitely

Posted: 12 Nov 2018 02:27 PM PST

Ohanaeze Ndigbo

The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, a  proscribed group by the Government, has indefinitely banned the Ohanaeze Ndigbo from the South-East.

The ban was ordered by the leader of the separatist group, Nnamdi Kanu, PoliticsNGR reports.

Mr Kanu placed the ban on Ohanaeze during his Sunday broadcast suspected to be coming from Israel. He stated;

"We are taking our stolen freedom back and nobody will stop us," Kanu, whose group has been calling for a referendum to decide their stay with Nigeria, said.

"Ohanaeze Ndigbo is banned for life. The organisation can hold its irrelevant gatherings in Lagos, Abuja, Sokoto and Kaduna, but not on our land. If Nwodo holds Ohanaeze meeting in Igboland, we will scatter them. Their meeting in MUSON Centre Lagos is irrelevant.

"These are men that met and conspired to kill me. Igbo traditional rulers met at Nike Resort and allegedly accepted money shared through Nnia Nwodo, to support my assassination. I will mention the names of all those who supported Operation Python Dance. I'm waiting for them to grant their usual One Nigeria interview, then, I will decimate them live on air.

"Voting in Nigeria has never brought anything good to the people. From the British who rigged the census of 1953 and 1957 and installed their Fulani puppets, it has been selection, instead of election.

"We have seen people without any known certificate take turns in raping us both politically and economically. This movement of IPOB is saying enough is enough.

"Unfortunately, it was a succession of Igbo men that put us in the mess we are in today, in Nigeria. The same mistake Dr. Azikiwe, Gen. Aguiyi Ironsi and Nzeogwu made, Nnia Nwodo, Dave Umahi and their kinds are repeating today. Nigeria was never meant to be one.

"We all heard the news about Customs Officers who set up 15 roadblocks from Apapa Wharf to Aba main town, all in a bid not just to criminally extort money from our people, but to punish us as a conquered people.

"They are not contented with making us import goods from Lagos which benefits the Yoruba economy and the government of Lagos State.

"Igweocha seaport is only 60 kilometres away, but we are not allowed to use it. We are forced to endure police, army, road safety, NDLEA, Civil Defence and customs checkpoints all the way from Lagos, where the goods are properly cleared and certified to our markets in the East and South.

"No Igbo politician, not a single one, has the mettle to challenge this apartheid system. This is evil. There is no roadblock in the whole of the North, where Boko Haram, Fulani terror herdsmen, armed robbers, kidnappers and various armed groups have made life unbearable for law abiding citizens.

"But, in the peaceful land of Biafra, from Igbake in Edo State to Azumiri and Opobo every kilometre is a roadblock.

"This was the menace Nwodo promised to take up when he was appointed Ohanaeze leader, but, till date, nothing has happened because they sold themselves so cheaply to the caliphate for peanuts. No dignity, no respect, no honour.

"The evil extortion of Biafran businessmen is going on right now in Aba, Abia State. Some of our brothers who imported their goods down to Biafra land were stopped by Nigerian Customs officers after they had cleared their goods in Lagos.

"If our people can learn to stand up against these evil and corrupt government agencies that are hell-bent on extoring and killing our people in their land, things would get a lot better as we march towards the restoration of Biafra," he added.

JUST IN: Osinbajo Asked To Resign, Given 7 Days To So

Posted: 12 Nov 2018 11:14 AM PST

Professor Yemi Osinbajo

The former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Timi Frank, has given Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, seven days to resign over alleged flagrant violation of the Constitution and the Public Procurement Act in the approval of N5.8billion as intervention funds for the North East in 2017.

Meanwhile the House of Representatives in its investigative report had indicted Osinbajo after its investigation into the fund disbursement, the Cable reports.

Frank in a statement on Monday, called on the National Assembly to immediately commence impeachment process against the VP based on the House report and in line with its constitutional mandate to act as a check and balance on the Executive.

He said that with the revelations about Osinbajo's role in this high level sleaze and the many corruption cases against top aides and appointees of President Muhammadu Buhari, "it is safe to say that the present administration is the worst so far in terms of corruption and circumvention of due process laws in the nation's democratic history."

He insisted that the fact that Osinbajo is a senior lawyer and Chairman of the Board of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) – now alleged to have diverted the funds – makes it mandatory for the Vice President to immediately step aside to allow for thorough criminal investigation to determine the veracity or otherwise of the issues collusion and core raised in the House report by security and anti-corruption agencies.

He noted that it is appalling to hear that Osinbajo – despite his public anti-corruption posturing – could be remotely mentioned in such a scam where funds meant to provide succour for hunger-ravaged Internally Displaced Persons in the North East were allegedly diverted in such brazen manner.

"As a learned gentleman, Osinbajo cannot say he did not know that it is illegal for any government official to spend funds not appropriated by the National Assembly. He should have known that it is intrinsically illegal for anybody to divert funds raised through the issuance of Euro Bond – approved by the National Assembly for specific capital projects – to fund his 'emergency intervention.'

"What is most telling is that it now appears that the VP used his brief stay as Acting President to open up the nation's coffers for fleecing in this manner with the approval of the N5.8billion to be disbursed from the Euro Bond account and another N17billion he caused to be released from the Ecological Fund.

"These acts of financial recklessness are most unbecoming of a person of the Vice President's standing. He has a lot of explanations to render to his Principal – who was on medical vacation at the time – and to Nigerians – whose trust has been rudely shaken by this stinking corruption affair.

"Being a man who enjoys immunity by reason of his office, I call on him to immediately resign his position to enable him appear before the anti-corruption agencies to state his involvement or otherwise in the scam.

"To hide under the toga of Vice President and not face prosecution alongside other NEMA officials indicted by the House of Representatives report on the investigation would amount to a travesty of justice and the selectiveness that has unduly characterised the war against corruption since the inception of the present administration.

"I give the VP seven (7) days to resign his position to enable him face the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission – like ex-Governor Ayodele Fayose did recently – to clear his name.

"Should he fail to heed my humble appeal, I shall have no choice but to commence the process of making available to the public other corruption-related information concerning the Vice President that will most certainly shock Nigerians," Frank stated.

Why Atiku Abubakar Was Subjected To Search At Airport – Presidency

Posted: 12 Nov 2018 02:01 AM PST

Alhaji Atiku Abubakar

The Nigerian government Sunday said there was no ulterior motive behind the search of a former vice president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the presidential candidate of the main opposition party, the People's Democratic Party, PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and his staff underwent on arrival at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport, Abuja, from Dubai.

Abubakar alleged earlier on Sunday that the search by the "agents of the state" was meant to intimidate him.

"I arrived to Abuja this morning to a search by agents of the state, aimed at intimidating me and my staff," he tweeted.

But the country's minister of aviation Hadi Sirika said the claim was false and "mischievous".

"For the records, all incoming passengers on international flights go through customs, Immigration, health and security screening," Sirika said.

"Where the aircraft is using the private, charter wing, as the PDP Candidate did, such arrivals are met by a team of the Immìgration, customs and other security agencies."

The minister confirmed that Abubakar was truly searched by the officials of Task Force on Currency at the airport, he insisted that former vice president was "accorded full respect as a former Vice President of Nigeria."

He explained that these checks were part of the international standards applicable in air travels and have no exemption except "if the passenger is the President of Nigeria."

"These checks are mandatory, conventional, internationally applied and routine," Sirika said.

"No one is excused from them under our laws. These checks are carried out on all international arrivals and President Buhari does not get involved in them."

A former spokesman of the ruling All Progressives Congress Timi Frank said in a statement on Sunday that the purpose of the search was to implicate Abubakar.

Frank alleged that the search squad planned to plant "bags of foreign currencies and other implicating things" in Abubakar's aircraft on arrival in Abuja.

He said the officials, who carried out the search, confessed that they were directed by the presidency to embarrass the former Vice President.

Frank did not, however, say where, when and to whom the officials confessed.

Man In Aso Villa Not Buhari, We’ll Shock Nigerians With His Identity – Fani-Kayode Insists

Posted: 12 Nov 2018 01:45 AM PST

Femi Fani-Kayode and President Muhammadu Buhari

A  former Minister of Aviation, during the administration of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Chief  Femi-Fani Kayode, has insisted that the person occupying the Presidential Villa is not President Muhammadu Buhari.

Fani-Kayode said Nigerians would be shocked in 2019 when the true identity of the president would be uncovered, Daily Post reports.

He was reacting to the ongoing crisis rocking the All Progressives Congress, APC.

According to the ex-Minister, "If APC provokes me again I will tell the whole world what we were cooking that got the house burnt"- Gov. Amosun.

"If I say what I know about APC Nigerians will burn down AsoRock within 24 hours"- Gov. Okorocha.

"There is something rotten in the APC that stinks worse than a dead body.

"For example the true identity of the man in the Villa that claims to be Buhari will only be made known after he is defeated and steps down from power.

"When that happens, Nigerians will be shocked to the marrow. In 2015, I warned about his fake certificate. Today I am warning about his fake identity."

BREAKING: EFCC Finally Set To Probe Oshiomhole

Posted: 12 Nov 2018 01:06 AM PST

Comrade Adams Oshiomhole

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC is reportedly set to probe Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, the National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, over allegations of financial impropriety levelled against him and his Chief of Staff, Abbas Braimoh.

According to PoliticsNGR reports, a member of the party's National Working Committee (NWC), who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the anti-graft agency will invite Oshiomhole for interrogation over the allegations as they constitute financial crime.

He revealed that there were series of petitions forwarded to the anti-graft agency by some aggrieved stakeholders of the party over the primaries. He said;

"From available information, I believe the EFCC is looking into the matter and the national chairman and his Chief of Staff may be invited this week. Aside the DSS, some aggrieved members also petitioned the EFCC, alleging that the recently concluded primaries were marred by bribery allegations.

"While many of the aspirants didn't come out in the open, we have seen people like Osita Okechukwu, the Director-General of the Voice of Nigeria (VON), who pointedly accused Oshiomhole of corruptly enriching himself through the primaries. He also urged the DSS and EFCC to immediately probe the call logs of Oshiomhole.

"So, I believe the EFCC will begin its probe this week. Those who wrote the petition will be made to present their facts while the national chairman will defend himself", he said.

"What happens, thereafter, will determine the fate of the national chairman", he noted.

On whether President Muhammadu Buhari will not intervene just as he was reported to have done when Oshiomhole was grilled by the DSS, another source in the presidency said while he was not aware of the EFCC case, the President will not intervene if indeed Oshiomhole is found guilty.

"I don't think the president will shield him or prevent EFCC from doing its job. If you know, the president has always given the EFCC a free hand to investigate anyone no matter how highly placed. The president will not stop EFCC from doing its job.

"Remember, the general election is just few weeks away and one of the campaign promises is the fight against corruption. So, how can it be said that he is shielding the national chairman of his party from being investigated? If he does that, the opposition will latch on to that and it will not do his image or the party a lot of good.
