Posted: 15 Nov 2018 12:31 AM PST

Olusegun Mimiko

Olusegun Mimiko, former governor of Ondo State, has decided to quit the 2019 Presidential race. Mr. Mimiko, who is the Presidential candidate of Zenith Labour Party(ZLP) has opted to contest for the Senate.

Mimiko, would any moment from now, announce his ambition to contest for Ondo Central Senatorial District in 2019.

"It's true, Iroko (Mimiko) is no longer vying for the presidential seat again because he has decided to change his mind by making u-turn after our meeting," said the source.

"He now prefers to contest for the Senate seat and would now be the candidate of our party for the Ondo Central Senatorial District."

Although, Gboye Adegbenro, the Commissioner for Works during the tenure of Mimiko, had also been gunning for same position under the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP).

It was gathered that Adegbenro's name had already been enlisted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as a candidate of Ondo Central Senatorial District.

2019 ELECTION: Oshiomhole Discloses What Amosun, Okorocha Will Do To APC During Elections

Posted: 14 Nov 2018 02:39 PM PST

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, has described the party's estranged governors, who had been up in arms against him, since the party's recent primaries, as good party men, who would support the party and its candidates in their respective states despite their grievances.

Oshiomhole stated this yesterday when he spoke as a guest on the 'Morning Show' broadcast on Arise TV, a sister broadcast station of Thisday Newspapers.

Recall that four governors, Senator Ibikunle Amosun (Ogun State), Chief Rochas Okorocha (Imo State), Chief Rotimi Akeredolu (Ondo State) and Alhaji Abdulaziz Yari (Zamfara State), had been engaged in a public spat with Oshiomhole, accusing him of scuttling the chances of their preferred candidates in the recently concluded primaries.

However, Oshiomhole in holding out an olive branch, said: "They are angry now, but I believe in a short while they will turn around and support the party."

Specifically, he ruled out the possibility of any of them working against the party in spite of their rage; saying, "I believe Governor Amosun is my friend and I believe people are entitled to feel disappointed if things don't work out the way they want. I think usually like any leader, he will recognise the greater interest of the party, I know he is a loyal party man; I can't see him voting with his feet.

"As a statesman, who has contributed to the growth and development of Ogun State, he will want to ensure that his party continues to govern the state and play the role of a statesman; I have no fear at all because this thing called choice is a relative question.

"Whatever we have as internal issues in APC they do not in fact undermine that Amosun, has more things to show as governor of that state and for which I am very proud of as chairman of the party. I hope he can overcome his anger so that we can work to reconcile our various interests in Ogun State.

"As for my friend Rochas Okorocha, who talked about nepotism, well as the head of the family, I do not want to continue to bring family matters to the market. At the end of the day it makes sense to keep it in the family, that is what maturity and responsibility imposes on me.

"So I won't join issues with him, but the truth is that while I was in government, there was no other Oshiomhole in government. This is not something to hide, as a journalist you can go to Edo State and ask how many Oshiomholes were in government while I was at Osadebe House.

"Well, Okorocha is a great guy. He is one of those who left APGA to join APC. It is on record as having contributed his quota to the formation of the APC.

"We also have to accept that a tree cannot make a forest and we have to encourage those who think otherwise to recognise that this is a fact.

"In Imo State we have big names but it is not about big names, it is about big numbers. And the big numbers in Imo State are with us and I think governor Okorocha appreciates this fact.

"Now as for whether people will decamp or not I am not so sure. Even if they do, they will not make history, after all, in recent past, sitting governors decamped for one reason or the other because they want to be president. Having decamped they found that there are so many aspirants, they have since reconciled themselves with the reality that though they decamped from the APC believing that they are going to be presidential candidate of the PDP, they got there and found an over-crowded house.

"I think some of them have quietly taken the governorship ticket and some have even taken the senatorial ticket and they are living with the new reality. I think that is the way it is.

"In a democracy it is a game of numbers and in Imo State we have the numbers and I am sure that Okorocha, when he overcomes his disappointment with regard to whom he would have preferred to succeed him, he will recognise that as a democrat that is the way these things work sometimes. Outcomes can be predicted sometimes but it could be shocking some other time. I think Nigeria's democracy is evolving but we are not running traditional rulership."

He expressed the confidence that in spite of the current misgivings in the party in the affected states, the party's candidates would still win since the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had its fair share of crisis.

He said, "The truth is that in Ogun State we will win because PDP has its own pocket of crisis as well. As we speak we don't know who is the actual governorship candidate in Ogun State because the national secretariat of PDP parades a certain candidate and a running mate and a certain group run by Buruji Kashamu with due respect to him also parade a governorship candidate and a running mate.

"So while they are sorting out their own issues we will be sorting out our own issues."

He said the negative public perception of the government of President Muhammadu Buhari, was due to poor communication of its policies and programmes by its information management machinery.

He, however, said despite this shortcoming, the president's integrity would give him the edge in the forthcoming general elections slated for the first quarter of 2019.

Idongesit Ituen

A federal high court in Uyo on Wednesday declared vacant the seat of a lawmaker in Akwa Ibom State who defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The affected lawmaker, Idongesit Ituen, represented Itu State Constituency in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly.

The suit was filed by Mr Ituen in September this year to pre-empt the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Onofiok Luke, from declaring his seat vacant.

Apart from the speaker, other defendants in the suit were the PDP, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and the commissioner of police, Akwa Ibom state.

Mr Luke had filed a counterclaim, seeking for "a declaration that having defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress before the expiration of the tenure of four years for which he was elected to serve, Hon. Idongesit Ntuen has lost his seat in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly.

"An order of court directing Hon Idongesit Ituen to vacate the Itu State Constituency seat in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly with immediate effect.

"An order of court restraining the Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly or any other person acting on his behalf (including the staff of the House of Assembly) from further recognising Hon. Idongesit Ituen as a member of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly.

"An order of court directing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to immediately conduct a bye-election to fill the vacant seat of Itu State Constituency at the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly."

The court presided over by F. O. Riman, dismissed the main suit and granted all the reliefs in the counterclaim.

2019 ELECTION: ‘Nigerians Are Frustrated’ – Obasanjo Attacks Buhari Again

Posted: 14 Nov 2018 01:30 PM PST

Chief Olusegun Obasanjo

Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, Nigeria's ex-President,  has attacked President Muhammadu Buhari once again saying that Nigerians are frustrated with the present government.

Obasanjo lamented, saying that many Nigerians are "disillusioned and hopelessly frustrated."

Obasanjo spoke on Sunday at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, when the governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Gboyega Nasiru Isiaka, was formally presented to him alongside other candidates of the party ahead of the 2019 elections.

According to him, God did not create Nigeria to be a failed country, rather one of the leading countries among comity of nations.

The Ota-farmer said the country still lags behind other developed nations because of the "conscious and unconscious choice of the people of Nigeria."

Obasanjo said, "some people are hopelessly frustrated and when I see people like that I tell them – don't be frustrated because of the situation in the Nigeria. Otherwise, we have made many mistakes in this country that Nigeria should have ceased to exist, but that has not been our lot. That has not been our situation, we thank God for that".

How Jonathan Govt Threw Nigeria Into Debt – Osinbajo

Posted: 14 Nov 2018 07:18 AM PST

Professor Yemi Osinbajo, Nigeria Vice President.

Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, has once again accused the immediate past government of President Goodluck Jonathan of throwing Nigeria into untold hardship, recession and debt.

According to him, the corruption that took place under the previous government was the reason Nigeria's economy was currently in crisis.

Osinbajo made this statement on Monday in Lagos in a lecture entitled, "Restructuring and the Nigerian federation," which he delivered as part of activities marking the 40th anniversary of Association of Friends.

He said, "What do these figures show? They show that when oil prices were at the highest between 2010 and 2014 the government was borrowing heavily.

"From 2010 to 2014, debts moved from $35bn to $63bn. When we assumed office in 2015, the debt that the previous government left was $63bn.

"Today, three and half years later, the debt is $73bn.

"There are two reasons why despite high earnings we are poorer – the first is grand corruption and mismanagement of resources. And there is a difference between grand corruption and ordinary corruption.

"Grand corruption is directly stealing from the CBN, directly taking money from the treasury without any contract, no pretences; there's no caution, you just take money. That was going on and I will give you several examples.

"When I got to the office as Vice-President, I couldn't believe it. In one day, $292m was signed out and it disappeared. After that period, for two weeks, the Central Bank of Nigeria did not have cash dollar – $292m without any real explanation! We later discovered what became of the money.

"On another occasion, N60bn was moved out ostensibly for security purposes; but we know what happened.

"When you have a corrupt government, large sums of money which can be used for development is simply taken. If you are the President of Nigeria, you can literally say, 'Go and bring money'.

"Look at a sum of N60bn; when someone can take N60bn; and $292m, that's almost N70bn. Today, our TraderMoni scheme is costing us N20bn, where we're giving to petty traders a loan of N10,000 and when they pay back, we give them N15,000 and when they pay back, we give them, N20,000. But somebody will take $292m, almost N70bn. If you have N70bn, you will solve the problem of seven million of those petty traders. That's the kind of thing we are talking about and the kind of contrast that we're trying to draw."

Presidency Identifies Owners Of Cattle Causing Problem In Nigeria

Posted: 14 Nov 2018 05:27 AM PST

Herds

The presidency on Monday revealed the identity of the real owners of cattle allegedly destroying farmers' crops and causing major crisis in some part of the country, especially in the North Central.

It said the real owners of the cattle were the pastoralists themselves and not some wealthy individuals as popularly held in many quarters.

Reacting to a question at a pre-event press conference on 'Insights and Conversations with Prof. Yemi Osinbajo' in Abuja,' a Senior Special Assistant, Agriculture Policy to the Vice President, Andrew Kwasari said 70 per cent of the cattle found in the troubled areas were owned by the pastoralists themselves, and not by wealthy Nigerians as claimed.

According to him, ''It will interest you to note that cattle owned by these so-called rich people are highly secured and protected. They do not roam about. The truth is that the pastoralists themselves own most of the cattle that are causing trouble. In fact, I had met a particular herder who owns 6000 cattle''.

He added that efforts were in place to tackle the situation, especially now that the dry season was here.

On what the government is doing to address the continuous farmers/herders' clashes in the country, Kwasari said a 10-year-plan had been mapped out to tackle the situation.

He said the federal government was engaging the local people in various communities to understand how best to tackle the situation, saying ''The federal government has set up a committee to work with local communities in order to proffer a permanent solution to the clashes. A 10-year-plan has been proposed and a long-term sustainable solution is the target. 7 key states for the implementation of the 10-year policy have been identified and we have gone round most of the states and we have found interesting ways to tackle the situation.

''The people are also insisting on the implementation of the recommendation from the last national economic council. A conflict resolution mechanism has consequently been put in place and the people are at home with that. If we are going to succeed in implementing the 10-year plan, then we need the support of all stakeholders, including the media in order to change the narrative.

''I'm happy that the people are willing to resolve the problem. The people have agreed to work jointly.

''It's very important that we are looking into this problem as this is the first time in the history of our country where we have this type of problem on the eve of a national election. Very soon, politics will set in. So what we need to do is to ensure the community work together to stop this menace.

''From our findings, the people are also interested in proffering solution by themselves. They want the federal and the state government to recognize their institution and their community leaders. For instance, about 256 routes paths have been identified by the local people in Nasarawa State. Foreign herdsmen are believed to come in through those routes and they are working with the security agencies to stop illegal movement along those paths,'' he added.

2019 Presidency: Why Security Was Ordered To Search Me By Buhari, APC – Atiku

Posted: 14 Nov 2018 04:39 AM PST

Alhaji Atiku Abubakar

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has accused President Muhammadu Buhari of ordering the security personnel that searched his (Atiku's) private Jet.

The Wazirin Adamawa had revealed how he was intimidated by security agents on his return from Dubai on Sunday

Speaking through the Atiku Campaign Organization in a statement yesterday, the former Vice President alleged that the deployment of security men was directly ordered by the President in his capacity as Commander-in-Chief, being the only one so authorised to do so.

He also observed that the search of the aircraft had been canvassed in a statement issued by the All Progressives Congress, APC, a week ago.

The Atiku Campaign Organization said, "On November 5, 2018, exactly a week ago today, the All Progressives Congress released an official statement accusing former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of having strategy meetings for the purpose of moving 'illicit cash' into Nigeria and they asked the security services to investigate HE Atiku Abubakar and his plane.

"To quote from the APC's statement, the ruling party said 'Our intelligence, anti-graft and security agencies must be awake to their responsibility of investigating the Dubai meeting.

'Cash-and-carry politicians must be prevented from moving illicit cash around to induce voters and sponsor election violence and rigging.

"Again, relevant agencies must check suspicious movement of cash both locally and internationally by politically exposed persons under the guise of a 'Dubai meeting' or any clandestine meeting'

"They thereafter asked the security services to search aircraft belonging to members of the Peoples Democratic Party.

"That statement evinced an obvious premeditated intention by the APC and its Federal Government to deliberately embarrass the former Vice President by invading his plane with security personnel and possibly to set him up for the crimes they had already officially accused him of in their statement.

"The official denial by the All Progressives Congress and the Presidency of any hand in the ordeal of the former Vice President is put to lie when you examine their statement of last week which was clearly what was implemented against the former Vice President. It also shows that both parties have no credibility and will do or say anything to further their interests.

"The statement by the aviation ministry that the search of Atiku Abubakar's plane is 'routine' is an afterthought that does not hold water for the simple reason that the PDP Presidential candidate has been flying in and out of Nigeria without ever receiving such a treatment until the APC released its statement.

"This event raises grave concerns about using government services for purely political purposes and what this portends for the conduct of free and fair elections in February 2019, and shows as hollow President Buhari's promise to superintendent over credible polls.

"The Atiku Presidential Campaign Organisation wishes to remind Nigerians and the international community that by Nigeria's constitution, only the President can order the deployment of military and paramilitary personnel as Commander-in-Chief.

"That, combined with the statement released last week, is proof beyond reasonable doubt that what happened to Atiku Abubakar was not a routine exercise, but a deliberate attempt to intimidate him by those who have seen the political handwriting on the wall."
