See Senators Who Will Not Return In 2019 And Reasons

Posted: 06 Nov 2018 11:42 PM PST

Nigerian Senators

A good number of the current members of the Senate will not be part of the ninth Senate when it is constituted next year. While some of the lawmakers are pursuing other ambitions, many lost out in their party primaries.

As things currently stand, over three dozens of lawmakers will not return to the Senate. But there is a slim possibility of one or two changes happening by November 17 deadline for the replacement of parties' candidates.

If such changes do not occur by that date, then below is a state by state list of senators who will not return to the red chamber and why.

Adamawa

Abdulaziz Nyako (APC Adamawa Central) and Ahmed Abubakar (APC, Adamawa South) are not returning to the ninth Senate.

Mr Nyako opted to contest for governorship of Adamawa state under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) while Mr Abubakar was replaced by Ahmed MoAllayidi who was unopposed at party primary.

Bayelsa

The trio of Forster Ogola, Ben Murray Bruce and Emmanuel Paulker will not be representing their constituencies when the next Senate convenes.

Forster Ogola (PDP, Bayelsa South) lost the PDP ticket to the state Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo. In the case of Bayelsa East, Ben Murray Bruce said he withdrew his ambition due to a rotational arrangement existing among the three local governments that make up the district. Emmanuel Paulker (PDP Bayelsa Central), who lost his primary, completes the list.

Benue

Former senate president, David Mark, who has been representing Benue South since 1999, contested and lost the PDP presidential primary. So he will not be returning.

Borno

Two senators, Baba Kaka Gabbai and Abubakar Kyari, will not return to the upper parliament.

While Mr Gabbai (APC, Borno Central) lost the return ticket to Governor Kashim Shettima, Mr Kyari (APC, Borno North) stepped down for a former commissioner, Umara Zulum.

Cross River

John Enoh (APC, Cross Rivers Central) emerged as APC candidate for governorship election in the state. Therefore, he will not be coming back.

Ebonyi

Sonny Ogbuoji (APC, Ebonyi South) is out of the contest to return to the Senate. He will instead contest the state governorship election under the banner of APC.

Enugu

Gilbert Nnaji (PDP, Enugu East) lost the PDP ticket to former governor, Chimaroke Nnamani, and will not return.

Ekiti

Fatima Raji Rasaki lost the primary to return to the Senate.

Gombe

Usman Nafada and Joshua Lidani are not coming back.

While Mr Nafada (PDP Gombe North) defeated 12 other aspirants to emerge winner of the PDP gubernatorial primaries, Mr Lidani lost his seat to a member of the House of Representatives, Binta Bello.

Imo

Hope Uzodinma (APC, Imo West) will not return. He defeated the governor, Rochas Okorocha's in-law, Uche Nwosu, to win the All Progressive Party's gubernatorial ticket. His counterpart from Imo East, Sam Anyanwu, will not also return. He contested and lost the governorship ticket of PDP to Emeka Ihedioha.

Katsina

Abu Ibrahim and Umar Kurfi will not be part of the ninth senate.

The 72-year-old Mr Ibrahim (APC, Katsina South) decided not to seek re-election. Mr Kurfi, on the other hand, lost his bid to return.

Kwara

Rafiu Ibrahim and Shaaba Lafiagi will not return.

Mr Ibrahim stepped down to allow the governor, Abdulfattah Ahmed, contest in the district. Meanwhile, Mr Lafiagi (PDP, Kwara North) contested the PDP gubernatorial election and lost.

Lagos

Gbenga Ashafa lost his return bid under the APC to a member of Lagos State House of Assembly, Bayo Osinowo.

Nasarawa

Aruwa Gyunka (PDP, Nasarawa North) lost the gubernatorial primary of PDP. He is not coming back to Senate.

Niger

Sabi Aliyu Abdullahi and David Umaru are out of the race at least for now.

Both men lost their party primaries to return to the senate.

Ogun

None of the three Ogun senators will return.

Buruji Kashamu, who was expelled from the PDP, has been replaced by Bola Kalejaiye. Meanwhile, two APC senators, Lanre Tejuoso (Ogun Central) and Gbolahan Dada (Ogun West) were replaced by the governor, Ibikunle Amosun, and his chief of staff, Tolu Odebiyi, respectively.

Osun

Also in Osun, the three senators will not return to the chamber.

Senate chief whip, Olusola Adeyeye (APC, Osun Central) and Babajide Omoworare (APC, Osun East) lost the party primaries while Ademola Adeleke contested the state's governorship and lost.

Oyo

Rilwan Akanbi (APC Oyo South) lost the party primary and will not return.

Plateau

Joshua Dariye and Jeremiah Oseni are out.

Plateau Central senator, Mr Dariye, will not return to the Senate as he is currently serving a 14-year jail term for corruption during his time as governor. Mr Useni (PDP, Plateau South) won PDP governorship ticket in the state and will vie for governorship instead.

Rivers

Rivers South East senator, Magnus Abe, lost the APC gubernatorial primary in the state and will not return.

Yobe

Bukar Abba Ibrahim (APC, Yobe East) was replaced by the state governor, Ibrahim Geidam.

Zamfara

Zamfara State APC will not be fielding candidates in next year's election. INEC on October 10 said the party is ineligible to field candidates for any elective office in the 2019 general elections, for failing to meet up with the deadline for submission of candidates.

Before the INEC embargo, Ahmed Sani Yerima (APC, Zamfara West) had stepped down for Governor Abdul'azeez Yari for Zamfara West ticket while Kabiru Marafa (APC, Zamfara Central) is not returning because of his governorship ambition.

2019 Election: Communications Minister, Adebayo Shittu Dumps Buhari/Osinbajo, Campaign Office To Be Let Out

Posted: 06 Nov 2018 11:24 PM PST

Barrister Adebayo Shittu, the Minister of Communications, has closed down the South West campaign office for President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo ahead of the 2019 general elections, DAILY POST reports.

This is coming few weeks after the Saki-born lawyer turned politician lost the bid to get the gubernatorial ticket of the ruling All Progressives Congress in Oyo State to former Deputy Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Bayo Adelabu.

The office inside a building strategically located along Mokola-Ojoo Road in the heart of Ibadan, the Oyo state capital, DAILY POST recalls was meant to serve as the campaign office of Buhari and Osinbajo in the South West region, gubernatorial campaign office and Ministerial office of the embattled Minister, Shittu.

Photographs during the inauguration of the office attended by former Governor of Abia state, Chief Orji Kalu and former Senate President, Ken Nnamani obtained by DAILY POST revealed that there were APC banners and photographs of President Buhari, Osinbajo, APC National Leader, Bola Ahmed Tinubu as well as that of the Minister.

But, the banners and photographs which were earlier erected during the commissioning of the building have been removed and DAILY POST gathered that the building has been offered for let after the Minister closed it.

Investigations by DAILY POST in the last two weeks revealed that the office which once served as beehive of activities has been deserted, surrounded and over grown by weeds which shows that it has been abandoned by the Minister.

The office was commissioned on Saturday, 20 January 2018, but it has been deserted after it was abandoned and closed by the Minister ten months after the commissioning.
DAILY POST gathered that the immediate environment of the fenced building has become bushy and shrubs and trees have also overtaken the premises.

It was also gathered that residents of Veterinary, Oke-Itunu and Mokola and other people have also taken the advantage of the bushy compound to dump refuse into the premises.

The Minister while reacting to calls put across to him by DAILY POST to inquire why he closed the office and abandoned it, said that the house was rented to him (Shittu), by Hon. Ajibola Muraina, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), chieftain.

Shittu in a statement sent to DAILY POST Tuesday morning by one of his aides, Malik Aderogba added that the fact that the rent had terminated, it does not mean that Shittu is abandoning campaign for Buhari/Osinbajo ticket.

Aderogba, a cousin to the Minister said, "To start with, the building in question is not owned by Barrister Adebayo Shittu but was rented from one Barrister Hon. Ajibola Muraina, a PDP chieftain.
"Secondly, the fact that the rent was terminated is not conclusive that Barr. Shittu is abandoning campaigning for Buhari/ Osinbajo ticket as we are aware that Barr. Shittu is already making arrangements for a new and better location for coordinating campaigns for Buhari and Osibajo's reelection.

"Furthermore, Barrister Adebayo Shittu remains one of the most loyal, the most trusted and the most beloved ministers in the Buhari presidency.

Here are the pictures taken during the inauguration of the office and the ones taken when the office had been offered for let as obtained by DAILY POST…

JUST IN: '20,000 APC Members' From Akpabio's Village Defect To PDP

Posted: 06 Nov 2018 11:06 PM PST

APC members who defected to the PDP in Akpabio's home

No fewer than twenty thousand members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from Essien Udim, the home of Godswil Akpabio, former Governor of the state, on Tuesday defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the ruling party has said.

But the occasion was marred by an attack by hired thugs, with Moses Ekpo, Deputy Governor of the state, among party stakeholders and government officials to escape by the skin of their teeth.

The highlight of the reception for the new members, held at the Unity Hall of Essien Udim Local Government Council headquarters, was a massive declaration of support for Governor Udom Emmanuel by former and serving chapter and ward executive council members of the APC.

Prince Ukpong Akpabio, younger brother and former aide of the immediate past Senate Minority Leader, as well as Chief Michael Afangideh, regarded as Akpabio's political godfather, also declared for Udom.

The Deputy Governor was receiving the APC defectors on behalf of the Governor when thugs suspected to be Akpabio's supporters stormed the venue and attacked on the participants, including Ekpo.

The thugs, allegedly led by one Adionganye Akpabio, a cousin of Akpabio, and Imo Ibara from Ukana West ward1, arrived in buses and started launching missiles at everyone at the premises,
Speaking with Ukpong Akpabio, the state Commissioner for Investment, Commerce and Industry, thanked God for the prompt response of the Police to arrest the situation.

The miscreants succeeded in injuring some people and destroying some vehicles at the venue before escaping via a nearby river at Afaha Ikot Ebak.

A Honda Accord vehicle belonging to the PDP Chapter Chairman in Essien Udim, Hon. Ntiedo Usoro, was damaged, as well as some cars and motorcycles belonging to the APC members who defected to the PDP.

Elder Ufot EBong, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Technical Matters, said he was astonished by the nature of the attack.

"I have never seen anything like this; they came armed and they made bonfires on the road and attempted to barricade us inside so they can kill us," he said. "This is very horrible and I am worried about this development."

2019 Election: APC Reveals Why Atiku, Peter Obi, Saraki Held Meeting In Dubai

Posted: 06 Nov 2018 11:09 AM PST

Add caption

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has claimed that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, his running mate, Peter Obi, Senate President, Bukola Saraki and the party's National Chairman, Uche Secondus, travelled to Dubai for "sinister purposes".

This was contained in a statement signed by the party's Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Yekini Nabena, on Sunday.

Nabena dismissed reports that the four men went to Dubai to "plot strategies to oust President Muhammadu Buhari" in next year's election and urged security agents to be on the alert.

"The purpose of the said meeting is both comical and ridiculous as they have held several meetings for the same purpose in Nigeria.

"Clearly, the meetings held in Nigeria did not yield their desired results, hence, a follow up meeting in Dubai.

"But we know the way of these set of politicians and the political party they represent.

"There is more to the meeting that meets the eye. Nigeria has enough meeting/conference rooms, many of which meet international standards. It is therefore clear that the Dubai meeting is for other sinister political purposes ahead of the 2019 elections.

"Our intelligence, anti-graft and security agencies must be awake to its responsibility of investigating the Dubai meeting.

"Cash and carry politicians must be prevented from moving illicit cash around to induce voters and sponsor election violence and rigging.

"Again, relevant agencies must check suspicious movement of cash both locally and internationally by politically exposed persons under the guise of a 'Dubai meeting' or any clandestine meeting.

"We are mindful of how millions of dollars were confiscated in an aircraft belonging to a Nigerian PDP sympathizer in South Africa in the leadup to the 2015 elections.

"The case of N250 million cash found in the Peter Obi's private office in Lagos remains unresolved.

"Another round of election is here and it is not unlikely that they are playing a repeat performance, under the guise of holding a meeting in Dubai.

"Our security agencies should be on the watch for a stitch in time saves nine," the statement read.

See Reasons APC Senators Refused To Remove Saraki As Senate President – Shehu Sani

Posted: 06 Nov 2018 09:33 AM PST

Senator Shehu Sani

The senator representing Kaduna Central who recently defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC), Shehu Sani, has revealed why his colleagues in the ruling APC backed out of a plot to remove the Senate President, Bukola Saraki.

Mr Sani, who is now a stalwart of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) after he lost out in getting the senatorial ticket of the APC, said the senators were unable to remove Mr Saraki because it was "constitutionally impossible".

The vocal lawmaker who spoke with reporters in Abuja on Sunday also said the ruling party did not have the number of lawmakers required (two-third majority) to carry out its plan.

Following the defection of the senate president from the ruling party to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the APC leadership and some of its senators called for his resignation or forceful removal.

Mr Saraki's defection to the opposition was to seek the presidential ticket of the party which he eventually lost.

The APC chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, was particularly vociferous in his threat to ensure Mr Saraki was removed if he did not resign.

Mr Saraki, however, vowed to remain in office saying he enjoys the support of majority of the senators.

The senators of the APC eventually dropped plans to remove Mr Saraki when the house finally resumed from a 10-week recess as nothing was said or done about it.

Mr Sani explained why the plan failed.

"It is technically impossible to remove Saraki because the APC does not have two thirds majority in the National Assembly. Secondly, Saraki has been able to carry everybody along and provide a leadership to the extent that he is able to accommodate those who are critical of him."

"I can tell that APC backed out from plot to remove Saraki because they don't have the number to do that and it is impossible to do that through constitutional means," he said.

Mr Sani, who is now seeking re-election on the platform of PRP, said the opposition party, PDP, "where Mr Saraki now belongs to is more united than the ruling APC senators in the National Assembly."

"The opposition are more united and more formidable in their resolve to keep the senate president than the ruling party in their plot to remove the senate president.

"So, I can tell you that removing Saraki through constitutional means is very much impossible because the APC is not united to do that. The APC is not having the number to do that and the APC does not have the kind of support it needed to be able to carry out the plot."

2019 ELECTION: Presidency Discloses How Buhari Will Win

Posted: 06 Nov 2018 05:41 AM PST

Femi Adesina

The Presidency has declared that President Muhammadu Buhari will win the 2019 election by a wide margin.

President Muhammadu Buhari's Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, made the declaration while stressing that Nigeria can't afford to go back to its "infamous past."

Featuring on Channels Television, Adesina also described the 2019 Presidential election as a contest between light and darkness.

He said, "What we know is that a contest is ahead and it is going to be a contest between light and darkness, between integrity and people who have question marks; between a man whose life is plain and transparent and a man with so much opacity that you can't say, well, this is his life, this is his background and this is how he got this and that.

"It's going to be a fair contest and, at the end of the day, Nigerians will decide.

"Our conviction is that the party will win by a wider margin, far wider margin, than in 2015. Look around, what is the alternative? Can we afford to take the country back into the infamous past? It would be very sad. It would be quite shameful to take Nigeria back into the past.

"The best option for Nigeria is a continuity of what we have now so that it can be properly consolidated for a better future and Nigerians know it.

"The option is President Buhari to be re-elected. Our confidence is that President Buhari will win the election."
