Nigeria Is in Serious Problem … – Okorocha

Posted: 21 Nov 2018 05:49 PM PST

Owelle Rochas Okorocha

Owelle Rochas Okorocha, the Governor of Imo State, has said that his Rescue Mission Government in the State is open to constructive criticisms but takes exception to politically motivated criticisms that do not reflect any practical reality.

The governor spoke on Monday when the Federal Commissioner representing Imo State in the Public Complaints Commission, Chief Willie Amadi and his team paid him Courtesy Call at the Government House, Owerri.

The governor remarked that the Public Complaints Commission must take note that Nigeria is in a serious problem with this issue of what he called "Elastic Freedom" that allows people to go on the internet and misrepresent facts, regretting that if one should be relying on stories on social media, the person might be making a great mistake.

His words, "The worst part of it now is that it is no longer an attack on governments, but on individuals. People are defaming others on daily basis because they have access to phones, they can touch a few buttons and send out the wrong messages, and completely misinform the members of the public".

He continued "For the very reason that the commission works to ensure checks and balances between the employee and the employers of labour, let it be known to you that Imo State Government has paid salaries of November in the first week of the month, thereby reversing the entire law of nature which says you must work before you get paid but in this case, they get paid before they work. And that is a great innovation and all to ensure that we alleviate the sufferings of the ordinary citizens in the State".

His words, "Again we have also set aside N5billion to offset all outstanding Pension Arrears by this administration. I also want to inform that this is the only State as far as I can tell, that has built headquarters for the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), to bring about synergy between labour and government. We have also built complexes for Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN). All these are to make sure that institutions work".

The governor further explained "Talking about this decision to move Ekeukwu Market, you were once the Chairman of ENTRACO in this State, and I know that you did a publication showing that there was EXCO decision during Ohakim's time to remove Ekeukwu Market and you are the Chairman of that Committee and all efforts you people made could not work. But we came in with a greater political will to relocate it to a different place because its location is not good for the security of the State and it created so much problem for traffic in the land. These are some of the complaints that might be reaching you but I'm happy that you are in a better position to answer those questions having been one of those who pioneered this very move to do so".

He stressed "It is also very important to inform you that some of the speculations on demolitions is not true. All we have done in the course of Urban Renewal was to carefully remove fences though we had always said there should be no fencing within the capital city. It's only in this part of the world that people build houses in the capital city and fence them which encourages criminal activities."

In his speech earlier, the Commissioner, Chief Amadi said that they were on a courtesy visit to interface with the government, adding that the commission functions as an alternative dispute resolution that takes complaints from the Public and Civil Servants, private and public companies even multi-nationals.

He appealed to the governor to facilitate prompt responses to their letters to Agencies of government so as to inform distressed people correctly since they don't have access to vital reasons why government took certain decisions.

How Jega & INEC Conspired Against Me In 2015 - Goodluck Jonathan

Posted: 21 Nov 2018 03:23 PM PST

Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, former President, casting his vote in 2015

Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, former President, has insinuated that a vast conspiracy by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC was partly responsible for his loss in 2015, PoliticsNGR reports.

The Former President, who was the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP  lost to President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress, APC on March 31st 2015, marking the first time an opposition party wins an election in Nigeria.

In his book, 'My Transition Hours' launched in Abuja on Tuesday, Jonathan wrote;

"For some inexplicable reason, the INEC had been able to achieve near 100% distribution of Permanent Voter Cards in the North, including the North East, which was under siege with Boko Haram insurgency but failed to record a similar level of distribution in the South which was relatively more peaceful,".

Social media was filled with all manner of stories, pictures and videos. I had settled in my mind that I was not going to be the sitting president pointing out these infractions and accusing the opposition and the very INEC I helped to strengthen.

The world saw my ordeal at the polling unit in my community in Bayelsa State, where the card reader refused my PVC even after we tried repeatedly during accreditation.

And it was the same with my wife and my mother. It was a moment that exposed the shortcomings of INEC".

Mr Jonathan said even though he conceded defeat because of personal principles he had long held, he was even more conscious of past predictions of the United States intelligence that Nigeria would break apart.

"I knew what was coming the day before I called General Muhammadu Buhari. I had reports on the polls around the country. It was clear the results were not going to favour me. There were series of problems with card readers, resulting from widespread technical hitches leading to the non-uniform application throughout the country.

However, I was heading towards peace. Stopping the election on voting day would have been like detonating an atomic bomb," he said.

Mr Jonathan said shortly after he finished voting on March 28, he departed Bayelsa for Abuja to monitor the rest of the exercise from March 29 until he made concession call on March 31.

"The country was tensed. I had to do something. I could no longer wait for the collation of final results. The pressure on the country was palpable. In Lagos, people were ready to burst loose on the streets and in the North, the stage was set for envisaged violence. One of my party's agents at the INEC National Collation Centre in Abuja, Elder Godsday Orubebe eventually got into a heated argument with the INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega.

That further raised the tension in the country. Everyone was expecting the worse. I knew it was time to douse the tension,".

Security Agents Take Over Akwa Ibom State House Of Assembly

Posted: 21 Nov 2018 02:28 PM PST

Earlier today, Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly complex was reported locked down by joint security agents.

According to PoliticsNGR, as at the time this news was gathered, there were indications that workers of the State House of Assembly were barred from gaining entrance into the complex.

Recall, that the IGP had changed the Commissioner of Police who stopped the illegal invasion of the State House complex by APC thugs two days ago, thereby replacing him with Mr. Hyelasinda Musa Kimo.

Media reports has it that the reason for this change is a strategy to always give the five sacked APC Lawmakers access to the chambers each day they want to have their factional plenary sessions.

JUST IN: Dogara Speaks On Jonathan’s Phone Call To Buhari

Posted: 21 Nov 2018 01:06 PM PST

Hon Yakubu Dogara, Nigeria's Speaker of the House of Representatives

Hon Yakubu Dogara, Nigeria's Speaker of the House of Representatives, said that the decision of former president Goodluck Jonathan to concede defeat after the 2015 presidential election was responsible for bringing Nigeria's democracy to maturity.

Dogara who said this in a remark at the launching of the book "My Transition Hours" written by the former president in Abuja Monday, argued that not only did the singular action bring honour to him and place him among the rank of Africa's statesmen, it also conferred legitimacy to Nigeria's political process.

He added that the former president deserves to be celebrated for not choosing to take the path of African demagogues and narcissists by relying on the executive powers when he was in authority in order to pursue an ambition of remaining in office, PoliticsNGR reports.

Going further, he noted that, "In moments of difficulties, great uncertainty such as the presidential elections of 2015, it took only leadership for us to be able to renew our confidence in our political process. "

The speaker recalled the tension that the nation was under during the period which was fully doused when the then president Jonathan "decided, not out of compulsion but as has been amply testified to by the former president of Ghana, out of his own volition, to make that gracious call and I tell you, that gracious call conceding defeat was what changed the narrative of politics in Nigeria."

He stated, "Your excellency, we celebrate you. Those who choose not to do what you did today are not being celebrated, as a matter of fact if they were to organise an event like this, nobody will even attend and I guess the high point would be the events in Cote d'ivoire involving Laurent Gbagbo and we all know where he is presently, where he has been confined to and that is lesson to anyone who will not want to follow this legacy of honour and dignity that you have established as a standard.

"We celebrate you today because your executive powers conferred you the authority to take a seat among the demagogues and the narcissists of Africa but you refused. You chose instead to take a seat at the table with all those statesmen of Africa and today, you are celebrated. That singular gracious call you put to your opponent was what brought our democracy to maturity and conferred legitimacy to our political process. Nobody ever is going to change that. We celebrate you today because by doing that you have brought honour to yourself and you have brought honour to all those that will identify with you."

Jonathan Reveals Governors That Betrayed Him In 2015

Posted: 21 Nov 2018 05:32 AM PST

Dr. Goodluck Jonathan

Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, Nigeria's former president,  has revealed that some Governors during his tenure were responsible for his defeat in 2015.

Jonathan claims that some former Governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who defected to the then opposition All Progressive Congress (APC) cost him the presidency because of their ambition. He also claims that they attacked him with a barrage of 'Fake News'.

GEJ made the claim in a book about his tenure in office titled: "My Transition Hours" which was launched on Tuesday.

He wrote;

"This time around, there were governors who were rounding off their eight years tenure and were blinded by ambition.

Some governors wanted to be Vice President whilst others strived to be the President. If I contested none could realise his ambition. This muffled implosion would fully manifest in the buildup to the 2015, which each ship-jumper calculating how much he or she would take from the PDP or the most opportune moment to cause maximum damage and based on that, plot their exit.

As they jumped ship in preparation for the 2015 elections, only very few of this lots, if any at all, bothered about what the PDP did or did not do in terms of delivering our campaign promises. Their opposition to my re-election was principally driven by personal ambition. They therefore played up the issue of where I come from and the faith, I professed to fuel their burning ambition. My performance mattered quite little, if it mattered at all," .

It will be recalled that Rotimi Amaechi, Adams Oshiomhole, Babatunde Fashola and Rauf Aregbesola were notable among the governors that rebelled against Jonathan.
