2019 PRESIDENCY: See Candidate Gani Adams Said Yorubas Will Vote For

Posted: 25 Nov 2018 03:29 PM PST

Otunba Gani Adams

The Are Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Otunba Gani Adams has stated that his people of the Southwest will support any presidential candidate who is truly committed to the peaceful coexistence of Nigerians in all facets of national life.

He made this statement when a former Governor of Ogun State and the Deputy Director General/Chairman, (South) of the PDP presidential campaign Council, Otunba Gbenga Daniel led a team of some stakeholders in the Southwest geopolitical zone to pay a courtesy call on Adams at his Lagos residence on Saturday.

He emphasised that restructuring is very key in Nigeria's march towards nationhood, and a candidate who preaches this as one of his core agenda in the coming election will be considered above others.

According to him, "The coming election will be based on ideologies rather than partisanship or sentiments as it was in the past."

Adams, who is also the national coordinator of the Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC), revealed how Otunba Daniel averted what could have been a bloody scenario in the Yorubaland when two factions of the group were enmeshed in battle of supremacy some years back.

He recalled that it was Daniel who waded into the matter and established a lasting truce between the leaders and members of the two factions forestalling what could have snowballed into violent unrest.

In his response, Daniel thanked the Are Ona Kakanfo for the warm reception, words of encouragement and support.

He stated that a situation where the Yoruba people appear not to be getting it right in the governance of the country especially at the centre was one of the reasons he got involved in national politics which took him round the country on about three occasions.

He assured that he is convinced of the electoral promises of Atiku Abubabar who he described as "a thorough and visionary politician who is so passionate about the Nigerian project, a lover of the Yoruba people, a honest and true Nigerian who will not say what he could not do".

2019 Election: 'I Did Not Defect To APC' – Senator Akpabio

Posted: 25 Nov 2018 03:02 PM PST

Senator Godswill Akpabio

Senator Godswill Akpabio, former governor of Akwa Ibom State, has clarified that he did not defect to the All Progressives Congress, APC, but only moved to the party.

Akpabio said he was surprised that the same people who founded the ruling party were the ones pulling it down.

The former Governor, who represents Akwa Ibom North-West at the National Assembly, told Vanguard that the same people were determined to ruin the party to bring down the government of President Muhammadu Buhari just because of their selfish interests.

Asked why he defected to the APC, Akpabio said, "I did not defect, I moved to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the national interest especially if you look at what is happening at the national level.

"I was surprised that people who founded the APC were the same people determined to ruin that party, to bring down the government of President Buhari just because election is approaching, so that they could go and contest under another platform.

"I felt there is need for us to have a country before we talk about elections. People say statesmen think about the next generation while politicians think of the next election.

"I saw a trend where a lot of us are now becoming politicians thinking only of the next election without thinking of the next generation.

"I moved in the national interest, to stabilize the polity and in order to support the current administration.

"And I think that, to a large extent, my intention was achieved and so it was referred to as 'uncommon defection' because it was one defection that stopped a lot of defections.

"I was not thinking whether I will win election in 2019 when I was moving because, at that time, my state was totally PDP; when I moved, people were shocked but today, less than two months after, the entire state, 98%, has turned APC."

Speaking further on the forthcoming general election, the former governor said there will be no war in the country and added that only people who want war will see war.

He said, "There will be no war in Nigeria in 2019, people should not think of election as war. Election should not be war.

"I appreciate that question because recently I made a statement which I love to make.

"I said, 'Warsaw saw war' because the political leadership in PDP in Akwa Ibom had said that the current administration should recruit people and prepare for war, that 2019 will be war and that only the fittest would survive.

"So, the youths and some elders of the APC met me to say that people are calling for war.

"And I told them that people calling for war have never seen war and that, in those days, even when the worst enemies of mankind, Hitler, went to Poland which capital is Warsaw to wage war, he thought it was going to be a cheap thing but it wasn't."

BOKO HARAM: Surviving Soldiers Laments, Accuse Military Authorities Of Acquiring Obsolete Weapons

Posted: 25 Nov 2018 02:07 PM PST

Army

Some soldiers who survived the attack by Boko Haram on the military formation in Metele have sent an SOS to President Muhammadu Buhari, urging him to probe the quality of weapons procured by the military authorities and save them from further avoidable deaths.

In a video sent to journalists in Maiduguri, the soldiers accused the military authorities of providing them with obsolete weapons, which they said are grossly inadequate to effectively confront the insurgents in the ongoing counter insurgency campaign in the Northeast.

In the amateur video footage, the soldiers also levelled allegations against the military authorities accusing them of negligence which resulted into the death of scores of their colleagues in a series of attacks coordinated by the Albarnawi faction of the Boko Haram at Metele in Guzamala Local Government Area of Borno.

Foreign wire agencies reported that dozens of soldiers were killed when the insurgents attacked Metele military base on November 18.

In the video, two soldiers, who claimed to be among the survivors of the attack, narrated the precarious condition of the troops and obsolete equipment which made it difficult for them to repel the insurgents' attack.

The video footage showed the level of destruction of military equipment and makeshift shelters, while soldiers were seen packing their luggages, apparently preparing to live the camp.

In the video, the soldiers appealed to President Buhari—they repeatedly appealed to him— to intervene to save the situation from deteriorating.

"See what the Nigerian Army has been doing to us, they brought us here. See how they killed our fellow soldiers, they burn them inside the tanks", a narrator in the video said.

"They are using us to make money; why? Are we not human beings? They can kill soldiers inside a tank; if Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG) can penetrate M-RAG vehicle, what of a fellow human being?

"This is the location called 'Metele', This is a place they (the insurgents) took over 40 barrel and these people want to use us, and within one week they killed over 200 soldiers and we are now 147, they want to waste us here. It is a lie, our blood is not here.

"This is a Third World vehicle, a tank manufactured in 1972; and Albarnawi broke all of it.They want to use us and we are not getting anything from them.We want to tell the government of our condition.

"Please; the Federal Government should intervene before the insurgents come and kill us. They mocked us and said we are Zombies; animals, we do not know our rights, any order given to us we will follow.

"We are millennium soldiers, most of us are graduates.

"Look at what they did to this T12 tank; it is obsolete. It was a 1983 Czechoslovakian tank procured during Shagari's regime. Is this the money the Federal Government provided to procure weapons?

"All the equipment are not working. When it fired two shots it stopped. All the weapons are obsolete and bought during Shagari(1979-1983).

"We know about the money the Federal Government gave to them but the Nigerian Army had turned us into a business".

"All the money federal government gave them to buy weapons… Nigerian Army is buying INNOSON…. All these are obsolete… Oyinbo came here and said they are obsolete. All these weapons were bought during the Shagari regime in 1983… They have turned us to business…. Federal Government you will hear about it….

"All these weapons are not genuine…if you fire two times you have stoppages. This is 1983 when Shagari was head of state… Federal Government give them money, they go and buy INNOSON, Nigerian made… Federal Government please help us. Help us."

The Nigeria Army on Friday, confirmed on its Twitter handle the attack on 157 Task Force Battalion at Metele, on November 18 by Boko Haram insurgents.

However, the military authorities response, which came five days after, was short on details and the extent of casualties.

The army said that it has laid down procedures for reporting incidents that involve its personnel who become casualties in action, as a form of respect to the families of the gallant troops.

It noted that the families were first to be notified before any form of public information so as to avoid exacerbating their grief were they to discover it from unofficial sources.

"It is suffice to observe that several social media, print and online publications have been brandishing false casualty figures as well as circulating various footages of old and inaccurate Boko Haram terrorists' propaganda videos, and alluding it to be the attack on 157 Task Force Battalion.

"While; it is understandable how such misinformation can spread in this era of social media frenzy, the spurious circulation of some of these videos only contribute to further propagate the propaganda intent of the terrorists, misinform the populace and portray themselves as what they are not?

"So far, the situation in the location is under control as reinforcing units had been able to repel the terrorists and stabilize the situation.

In his reaction, President Muhammadu Buhari expressed deep shock over the killing of military personnel in Metele village by Boko Haram terrorists.

He gave an assurance that immediate measures are being taken to ensure that the loopholes which led to the fatalities are blocked once and for all.

Reacting to the tragic incident, the President said that his administration remains ever committed and focused on the security of military personnel and other citizens.

According to President Buhari, "No responsible Commander-in-Chief would rest on his oars or fold his hands to allow terrorists to endanger the lives of its military personnel and other citizens. Our loyal forces have proved their strength over the terrorists and we are ready to give them all the needed support in terms of equipment and manpower to succeed in ending the renewed threat. In the coming days, I am engaging the Military and Intelligence Chiefs in extensive discussions on the next steps we shall be taking."

The President noted that fighting terrorism has taken a global dimension, which necessitates international collaboration among states facing similar security challenges.

President Buhari reassured Nigerians of his continued commitment to their security and of his efforts to sustain the momentum in the previous significant successes recorded against the terrorists.

He, however, advised Nigerians against making a political capital out of national tragedy, stressing that members of the armed forces are one family who are commonly committed to the security and safety of all Nigerians.

2019 ELECTION: We Will End APC’s Reign In Lagos — PDP

Posted: 25 Nov 2018 11:40 AM PST

The Lagos State chapter of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) on Saturday said it was sure to defeat the All Progressives Congress (APC) to capture the state in the 2019 elections.

The state Organising Secretary of the party, Mr Johnson Agbaje, spoke in Epe during the campaign flag-off of Princess Abiodun Oyefusi, the Lagos East Senatorial candidate of the party.

He said the party had been re positioned for greatness and the confidence of residents in the party was growing by the day.

Agbaje said that residents were tired of what he called the failures of the APC administration in the state.

"The PDP will win in 2019. We are very confident. The people are tired of the APC and their failed promises and they want us to give them hope.

"We are the party of the people for the people. We are the party to deliver Lagos and give it to the people.

"With the growing confidence in the PDP, we will surely win in 2019," he said.

Agbaje said all the candidates of the PDP for the general elections in the state were people of integrity with the capacity to deliver.

He described Oyewusi as a candidate with a very rich pedigree, saying the party trusted in her capacity to give better representation to the Lagos East in the Senate.

"We have given the Lagos East a woman with great capacity. A woman who will bring the needed development for the people of this area.

"We have given you a woman with proven track records. We need you to support her and vote for her for better representation," he said.

Oyefusi, a daughter of the late Ayangburen of Ikorodu, Oba Salaudeen Oyefusi, said she was contesting the Senate seat to bring development to the Lagos East Senatorial seat.

She said she was contesting to contribute her quota to nation-building and create opportunities for women.

The candidate urged people of the area to give her the required support, promising not to disappoint if elected.

"I am going to the Senate to contribute to laws that will strengthen our communities and bring development, not only to our people here, but to the entire nation.

"I will create opportunities for our youths. I will fight for increased representation of women in politics.

"I am for the development of this area. By the grace of God, I will make you proud", she said.

Oyefusi urged the people of Lagos East to vote for the PDP, as the party would not disappoint them in 2019.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Oyefusi and her campaign team, after her official flag off at her Marina area of Epe, later moved from one part of the ancient town to another to sell her manifesto to the people. (NAN)

Chief Olusegun Obasanjo and Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, both ex-Predidents, joined some Peoples Democratic Party governors to visit the palace of Lamido of Adamawa in Yola on Sunday.

APC Reconciliation: Aggrieved Members Ask For Refund, Demand Tickets, Appointments

Posted: 25 Nov 2018 06:30 AM PST

Oshiomhole, Shettima, and Yari

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the APC, led by Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, had, on Wednesday, November 21, inaugurated the National Peace and Reconciliation Committee for each of the six geo-political zones in the country, majorly due to cases arising from primary elections.

The NWC had announced the formation of the committees, with each headed by a governor, to find a way out of the stalemate, so that they could go into the 2019 elections as one strong family.

"Do everything to ensure peace within the rank and file of the party," Oshiomhole charged the committees during their inauguration.

Oshiomhole, who said the committees were free to consult them on new issues that might arise in the course of their assignments, added that the terms of reference given to them were amenable.

However, reliable sources told Daily Trust on Sunday that the committees might not be able to alter the decisions the party had already taken on the volatile states, particularly Ogun, Imo and Zamfara, despite the ongoing protests.

What the aggrieved members want

The demands of the aggrieved members of the party vary.

Amosun's camp insist on Adekunle

In Ogun State, the grieving loyalists of Governor Ibikunle Amosun have insisted on the declaration of the governor's anointed candidate, Adekunle Akinlade, as the party's governorship flag-bearer as condition for peace to reign in the party.

They are equally demanding the ceding of 26 House of Assembly tickets to Amosun's loyalists, who had been "denied" candidates form (CF001) by the national leadership of the APC.

The ruling party in the state was polarised following the submission of Dapo Abiodun's name as the governorship candidate against the governor's pick.

Amosun had won the senatorial ticket for Ogun Central, alongside his chief of staff, Tolu Odebiyi, who got the Ogun West ticket. Another ally of Amosun, Lekan Mustapha, also got Ogun East senatorial ticket. But this is yet to pacify the aggrieved party leaders and members.

A presidential reconciliatory team had met with Amosun's group in Abeokuta, barely three days before the APC inaugurated its own peace committee.

The three-man team, led by Princess Sandra Oladele and state executives of the APC, was locked in a closed door meeting at party's secretariat in Abeokuta.

All the 26 candidates vying for State House of Assembly from the governor's camp, who had been denied tickets, were present at the meeting.

The state chairman, Derin Adebiyi, represented by the APC chairman, Ogun Central, Yomi Ademefun, presented the party's demands for peace, including declaration of Amosun's anointed candidate, Akinlade as the party's governorship candidate.

Speaking at the end of the meeting, a member of the panel, Adewale Adenaike, promised to forward their demands to the party for the reconciliation of the aggrieved parties concerned, asking party members to work together in the interest of peace.

Adenaike said the crisis would be resolved before December 1, but sources said replacement of the name of the current governorship candidate might be difficult because of powerful forces behind him.

"We should not deceive ourselves; this fresh committee can't alter the decisions taken in Ogun and other states. The forces behind Dapo Abiodun are bigger than those being fingered. It is not about Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole or even Chief Olusegun Osoba," one of the sources said.

Visit to Zamfara will have no value

In Zamfara State, Governor Abdulaziz Yari said the visit of the APC reconciliation committee would be of no value if its main focus is to look into the controversy surrounding the state's party primaries.

Governor Yari, who spoke through his special adviser on communication, media and public enlightenment, Alhaji Ibrahim Dosara, said the effort of the committee would not make any difference since they had already filed a suit in a court before the constitution of the peace and reconciliation team.

He said that until the court delivered its verdict on the case, any reconciliation on the state's party primaries would be an exercise in futility.

"However, if the committee is coming to talk to all aggrieved members to unite and forge ahead so that the forthcoming election would be won, it would be a welcome idea," he stated.
