Jonathan Reveals What Anenih Told Him Before He Died

Posted: 28 Nov 2018 08:49 AM PST

Late Chief Tony Anenih

Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, Nigeria's immediate past President,  Tuesday lauded former Minister of Works, late Chief Tony Anenih, saying he was one of the few Nigerian that played politics of ideologies and commitment.

The former President said despite a couple of unpleasant things done to him as a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP , he served the party with his all till his last day.

The former President stated this in Abuja Tuesday night in Abuja at a church service as part of activities marking the commencement of Anenih's funeral rites.

Jonathan stressed, "When I looked at the few activities of Thony Anenih politically, I feel he's one of the few Nigerian politicians that you can say he played politics of either ideology or politics of commitment.

"From the time of former President Olusegun Obasanjo in 1999, to late Umaru Musa Yar'dua, to my time, there were a few things that were done to Tony Anenih that were not too good. I can say if it were some other kind of people, they would have left PDP, maybe go into another party.

"But no matter the political ups and downs, he remained steady, he remained committed to PDP. He stayed and served the party until his last day. It's difficult to have that kind of character, yet there are still others like that in the party but Tony Anenih was one of the foremost leaders of PDP."

The former President also revealed that the day he was told that Anenih was admitted in the hospital, he went there to check on him and see how he was doing.

He added, "When I got go the hospital, he was lying in the bed, he struggled to explain to me what happened and in fact he summoned the doctor to explain to me.

"The doctor had to show me the scan of the brain and told me of the injury he sustained when he fell and that he was bleeding in the brain, but he gave me hope that the bleeding appears to be stopping and if that happened, there is hope that he would be sustained and the next step was taking him out of the country for a follow up.

"I was hopeful. The next day, I travelled back to Bayelsa state, but after few days when I made enquiry, I was told that he had been moved to an Intensive Care Unit. For five minutes I couldn't say anything because the condition I saw him was critical and if he has been moved to ICU that means things were getting bad.

"Of course, before I returned to Abuja, one of the saddest story that came was that he had left us. It was a terrible story for people like us.He mentored me as his son until he left us."

On his part, Saraki said for over forty years Anenih worked tirelessly for the country and for the PDP.

The Senate President added that, "If we have many more like him, this country will be a great country."

On his part, Oshiomole said despite their political difference, he always referred to him as his son, adding that he is always proud to call him father.

Anenih who died on October 28, 2018 and would be buried on December 1, 2018 in his Edo state country home of Uromi.
Eminent personalities at the church service include, Senate President, Bukola Saraki, Chairman, PDP Board of Trustees, BoT, Senator Jibril Walid, the National Chairman of All Progressive Congress, APC, Adams Oshiomole, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Anyim Pius Anyim, Speaker of House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, former PDP chairman, Chief Bode George, National Chairman of PDP, Prince Uche Secondus, Governor of Edo state, Godwin Obaseki among others.

JUST IN: Okorocha’s Son In-law, Uche Nwosu Defects From APC To DPP

Posted: 28 Nov 2018 08:05 AM PST

Uche Nwosu

Media reports Wednesday reveals that Chief of Staff and Son In-law to Governor Rochas Okorocha, Uche Nwosu has finally dumped the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC for a minor opposition party, the Democratic Peoples' Party, DPP.

Nwosu alongside Okorocha's aides and members of the State House of Assembly allegedly defected on Tuesday. This development is arising from the refusal of the APC to field Nwosu as the party's Governorship candidate in the upcoming state governorship elections.

Okorocha, who spoke with journalists at the Government House, Owerri, however, promised to work for the victory of Nwosu as the next governor of the state in 2019 even as he remained in the APC as its candidate for Orlu Senatorial District, PoliticsNGR reports.

He also accused the APC governorship candidate in the state, Senator Hope Uzodinma, of duping the deputy governor, Mr. Eze Madumere, former Secretary to the State Government, Mr. George Eche, and his predecessor, Mr. Jude Ejiogu, of the governorship ticket.

According to him, what happened in APC primaries in many states presents interesting scenario as the party he said is known for justice, equity and fairness has been dented by the National Chairman, Mr. Adams Oshiomhole.

He said, "What happened in Imo was a clear case of injustice, where Uche Nwosu won the primary and was robbed of the ticket. This injustice must be addressed. However, in spite of the fact that my aides are leaving the party, I am still a member of APC and will not leave the party.

"I tried to persuade them not to leave, but they have made up their minds. I have done what I can to make them remain in the party, they disobeyed me. I don't have any moral justification to stop them.

"President Buhari is not behind the injustice done by the party in the state but Oshiomhole is solely responsible for all the injustice meted to my people in Imo State.

For me, I am still a member of APC. Buhari still remains my candidate and I will support him."

Okorocha maintained that Imo people did not play politics of party but politics of individual, revealing that the people's interest in APC was by his own making.

He contended that among the various governorship candidates in the state, his son-in-law, Nwosu, remained the best and vowed to support him to fulfill his governorship ambition.

FG Adamant Over New Minimum Wage – NLC President, Wabba

Posted: 28 Nov 2018 05:30 AM PST

Comrade Ayuba Wabba, NLC President

Comrade Ayuba Wabba, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC),  says that the Federal Government was operating on denial over the new minimum wage.

The Labour leader,  pointed out that private sectors were actually cooperating with the labour unions on the proposed new wage than the government.

Wabba stated this in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State on Tuesday during the opening session of the 2018 meeting of the joint national public service negotiating council, Daily Post Reports.

He stressed that private sectors pay their workers higher than those in public service.

He said: "Private sectors have actually displaced the public sector in industrial relation and collective bargaining role model, our experiences during the negotiations for the new minimum wage showed that the employers in the private sectors are more forthcoming and forthright, moving negotiation forward to mutual acceptable figure, while government continues to live in denial and even stop the conclusion for the negotiation.

"Private employers remain willing to sustain industrial relation harmony by supporting positions that will ensure that workers get appreciable wages increase, while government continues to politicize our agreement, devoid of genuine interest."

He added that state governments still owe salaries, pension and arrears of civil servants despite several interventions in form of bail-out, Paris club refunds, other initiatives and budgetary supports.

BOKO HARAM: Reps Set To Probe $1bn Arms Procured By Buhari Govt, Demand Names Of Killed Soldiers

Posted: 28 Nov 2018 04:44 AM PST

House of Representatives

The Lower Chambers of the National Assembly, on Tuesday, began investigation into the 1 billion dollars appropriated for procurement of arms and equipment in the fight against Boko Haram in the North East Nigeria.

The lawmakers also demanded that the Nigerian Army should, after due consultations with families of soldiers killed in the Nov. 18, insurgents' attack in Metele village in Borno, release all their names.

The resolution was sequel to a motion by Rep Chukwuka Onyema (PDP-Anambra) at the plenary presided over by Speaker Yakubu Dogara in Abuja, NAN reports.

Moving the motion, Onyema, who is the Deputy Minority Leader, noted that many Nigerian soldiers of the 157 battalion were massacred by Boko Haram insurgents, who now called themselves Islamic State West Africa, in Metele in Borno State.

According to him, the initial figures of the casualty put the death toll at 44 but as more details emerged, it is now confirmed that many more soldiers and officers were killed together with their commanding officer, Lt. Col. Ibrahim Sakaba, while others are still missing.

"The House notes that according to reports, the insurgents carted away large consignment of weapons from the Melete army base which security experts say would embolden them and pose great danger.

"The House observed that while the news of the attack and death toll continued to increase, neither the President nor the Minister of Defense or the army authorities said anything about the report as there was silence for more than five days.

"The House notes that the President and C-In-C finally broke his silence six days after the attack in a statement issued on his behalf," he said.

The lawmaker said it was unfortunate that in the last one year, no fewer than 600 Nigerian soldiers were killed by insurgents, mostly in Borno State around the fringes of the Lake Chad.

He enumerated instances of attacks launched by Boko Haram against Nigerian soldiers within the year under review.

Onyema, who expressed regret that while the executive continued to insist that the insurgents had been technically defeated, he said they seemed to be waxing stronger on a daily basis.

"The House recalls that twice in three years, the Commander-In-Chief gave directives to service chiefs to permanently relocate to the Theatre Command Centre in Maiduguri until Boko Haram is defeated," he said.

He said it was disheartening that with the recent happenings in the North, all the successes and gains made against the insurgents had been reversed.

Contributing, Rep Nnenna Ukeje (PDP-Abia) said it was high time Nigeria began to change tactics in order to checkmate the audacity of the insurgents.

She urged the Federal Government to take a cue from Pakistan and review the curriculum of its military.

Rep Aminu Shagari (PDP-Sokoto), who queried how the recently appropriated money was used, described the attack as sad.

Rep Beni Lar (PDP-Plateau) called for the sack of the service chiefs.

On his part, Rep Idris Ease (APC-Plateau) called on the House to treat the matter dispassionately and not to be affected by political sentiment.

Rep Rimande Shawulu (PDP-Taraba) recalled that last year, there were reports that about 6, 000 members of the Islamic State in Syria (ISIS) found their ways to the sub-Saharan Africa.

The Speaker, Mr Dogara, after over an hour deliberation on the motion, described the development as an eye-opener.

He said it was time the leadership in the country began to take responsibility and not to apportion blame.

When the motion was out on a voice vote by the speaker, the lawmakers unanimously adopted it.

An ad hoc committee to investigate all funds appropriated for utilisation by the Armed Forces for the fight against insurgency was set up by the House.

The committee was also charged to look into the operational lapses that led to the killings of the soldiers. NAN
