Court Sentence SUBEB Chairman To 41 Years In Prison

Posted: 29 Nov 2018 03:55 PM PST

Murtala Adamu Jengebe

The Chairman of Zamfara state Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Murtala Adamu Jengebe, has been sentenced to 41-year in prison by a Federal High Court sitting in Gusau, Zamfara State.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) disclosed this via its official Twitter handle, @officialEFCC on Thursday.

The anti graft Agency, disclosed that a five-man panel of the Court of Appeal sitting in Sokoto and presided over by Justice Hannatu Sankey sentenced Jengebe to a cumulative jail term of 41 years.

The tweets further reads: "Jengebe was convicted by the court after the appellate court found him guilty on the seven out of the 10 counts for which he was earlier acquitted at the Federal High Court, Gusau, Zamfara State.

"In the lead judgement of the Court read by Justice Habeeb Abiru, the earlier acquittal of the embattled Chairman by a Federal High Court in Gusau was set aside.

"The appellate court held that the prosecution has proved beyond reasonable doubt seven out of the ten counts of the money laundering charge brought against him by the EFCC.

"He was consequently sentenced to five years imprisonment on each of four of the counts and seven years each on three other counts respectively. However, the Court ordered that the sentences shall run concurrently.

"It would be recalled that on the 12th day of May 2017, the Federal High Court sitting in Gusau presided over by Justice Z.B Abubakar discharged and acquitted the convict on the 10 counts charge of Money Laundering but convicted him for engaging in private business while he was still in public service. An offence he was never charged for by the Commission.

"Dissatisfied with the judgement of the lower court, the prosecution approached the Court Of Appeal seeking it to set aside the judgement of the lower court."

Atiku, PDP Appoints 35 Years Old Abdullahi Hussaini Maibasira As Campaign Finance Director

Posted: 29 Nov 2018 11:48 AM PST

Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and Hon. Abdullahi Hussaini MaiBasira

In one of his first major indication towards Youth Inclusion, Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has appointed 35 year old PDP National Financial Secretary, Hon. Abdullahi Hussaini MaiBasira as the Director of Finance for the 2019 Atiku - Obi Presidential Campaign Council.

The appointment of a youth into this vital position is unprecedented in the history of PDP's and possibly national campaign councils in Nigeria. MaiBasira is currently the youngest member of the PDP National Working Committee and is the immediate past National Youth Leader of the Party.

By this appointment, MaiBasira becomes the youngest person ever to serve in two successive Presidential Campaign Councils as Director. In 2015, then President Goodluck Jonathan appointed MaiBasira his Director for Youth and Student Mobilization. MaiBasira possesses two Masters degrees in Agricultural Economics and the other, in Strategic and Security Studies from the Nigeria Defense Academy, Kaduna. An old boy of Kings College, Lagos, MaiBasira has been tutored in Oxford, Harvard, Westminster as well as the Lagos Business School.

It could be recalled that Atiku had promised an accelerated youth and women inclusion agenda in his government when elected . This latest action is seen as keeping with that commitment as evidenced by the appointment of other vibrant young minds like  Hon Ude Okoye; Current National Youth leader of the party to serve as Director of youth mobilization for the campaign and Segun Showunmi who served as Atikus Spokesman.

Atiku has consistently proven his passion and desire to involve young people in nation building. Atiku is also believed to be the largest single private employer of Labour in Nigeria after the federal government. Nigeria has so far lost over 9 million jobs and unemployment rate is at an all time high of 23% according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

As Vice President to President Olusegun Obsasanjo; Atiku was credited with bringing in some of the youngest and most vibrant brains  at the time who made  significant contributions to national development from 1999- 2007. Nigerian Youths have decried the APC Buhari administration for not having a single young person in his current Cabinet or at any sensitive position of responsibility thus not living up to their 2015 campaign promises.

Army Authorities Finally Releases Figures Of Metele Attack Casualty

Posted: 29 Nov 2018 10:56 AM PST

Lt Gen Tukur Buratai, Chief of Army Staff

The Nigerian Army has revealed that 23 of its personnel were killed and 31 others wounded when the Boko Haram insurgents overran the military base at Metele in Borno state.

This was contained in a statement released by the Army Wednesday night, ten days after the deadly attack.

."As at date 23 personnel were killed in action and 31 personnel were wounded in action and have been evacuated to several medical hospitals within Borno State," Brigadier General Sani Kukasheka Usman said in the statement.

Usman also confirmed that between November 2nd and 17th the insurgents attacked troops' positions at Kukawa, Ngoshe, Kareto and Gajiram.

He said troops repelled those attacks but lost 16 soldiers, while 12 others sustained injuries in those incidents.

"The sacrifices of these fallen heroes will not be in vain. We also wish all those wounded in action speedy recovery and assure them of our continued support and care," Usman said

The Army had in its first statement about the attack said "the NOKs are first notified before any form of public information" on level of casualties during attacks.

Prior to this, there had been contrary claims by a military personnel among the troop that was attacked, who told foreign news agency Reuters that "the insurgents took us unawares. We lost about 100 soldiers. It is a huge loss."

Presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina, on Sunday, however, said the Military did not release the casualty figures in line with global practice.

"All over the world, the military does not or rarely disclose the figure of its casualties," Adesina said in an interview with Channels Television's Sunday Politics.

A fact-check by The Guardian showed the Adesina's claim is untrue.

The attack has been condemned by security analysts while many Nigerians are also questioning how the $1 billion approved in April for firearms was used.

Soldiers complained about the deplorable state of their equipment in a five-minute video seen on Saturday, a soldier, while lamenting that dozens of troops had died in a recent attack, showed the burnt shells of several tanks and vehicles in the Metele base.

"See the weapons they bring here. These are not working. These are outdated vehicles, they are not working. They just keep them here for formality," the soldier said.

President Buhari while reacting expressed deep shock on the attack and summoned the defence chiefs afterwards.

The Nigerian Senate adjourned its session last Thursday to mourn the fallen soldiers.

2019: It’s Not Proper To Compare Obasanjo’s Government With Buhari’s - Son

Posted: 29 Nov 2018 02:22 AM PST

Olujonwo Obasanjo

Olujonwo Obasanjo, the son of former President Olusegun Obasanjo and the National President of the Buhari Youth Organisation (BYO), has said that it is not proper to compare his father's administration with that of President Muhammadu Buhari-led government.

The Youth Leader, said the reason he cannot make such comparison is because the circumstances and the indices are not the same.

Olujonwo, who spoke yesterday at an interactive session with journalists at the All Progressives Congress (APC) national secretariat in Abuja, said while he cannot reasonably comment on the performance of his father-led administration, he believes that the present administration is doing a good work and should be given another chance, This Day reports.

The son of the former President, said as an adult, his current political view might be different from that of his father but that does not mean he is being disrespectful to his biological father.

The former President Olusegun Obasanjo had publicly opposed President Buhari's re-election bid and endorsed the aspiration of his former deputy and presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar.

When asked to compare his father's performance in office and that of Buhari's, Olujonwo said: "I think that will be unfair because of what each leader met on ground, and the fact that they came in under different circumstances. It will not be an unfair comparison".

On why he took another path different from his father, Obasanjo's son said: "Everybody's parent wanted his child to be one thing or the other, probably different from what they are today. But at a certain stage in our lives, we choose our part. That does not amount to disrespecting your parents."

He said as far as he was concerned, the present government has impressed him through some of things it has done, especially in the area of youth empowerment and agriculture.

"I am an adult and as individual, I am here as someone who believes in this government. This government is diversifying the economy from an oil based economy and has made agriculture fashionable.

"Today, people talk about farming and no longer look at it in a degrading manner. People now look at the value chain when you talk about farming," he said.

According to Olujonwo, it is all about the impact that the government has made to diversify the economy.

"As a country, we must look beyond oil and think outside the box by looking at other areas, which is what this government has come to do. Nigeria is a blessed in several ways and not just oil and this government is promoting youth involvement in all sectors.

"As a young man, I am looking at future and I believe in this government and I am supporting Mr. President. So, I cannot speak for my father.

"When we get to certain point in our life, you are responsible for the decisions you take. With all due respect, my father is my father and will remain my father despite our political differences. At the end of the day, this election will end. Does that stop him being my father?''

He said the country needs to progress mentally and quit looking at politics as a do-

or-die or as something that separates us.
