JUST IN: ASUU Commences Nationwide Strike

Posted: 04 Nov 2018 03:02 PM PST

ASUU union leaders attend a meeting at the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Ondo State on November 4, 2018.

STRIKE: The Academic Staff Union Of Universities (ASUU) has commenced an indefinite strike.

An official of the union, Ben Ugwoke from the University of Abuja, confirmed  the development to PREMIUM TIMES Sunday night.

When contacted, the chairman of ASUU at Obafemi Awolowo University, Adeola Egbedokun, said the strike is total and indefinite until the union's needs are met.

The strike is to protest the poor funding of Nigerian universities and alleged plan by the federal government to increase students fees and introduce an education bank.

Led by its National President, Biodun Ogunyemi, ASUU declared the strike at the end of its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting late on Sunday.

Weeks before the strike was announced, Mr Ogunyemi explained in an interview with PREMIUM TIMES why the lecturers were opposed to an education bank.

"The Nigerian government experimented with it for 7-8 years; it failed.

"So government had to set up a ministerial committee  at the federal executive council to go and wind up the national education banking plan in 2001/2002, something they started in 1993. So for seven to eight years, the experiment failed. Why did it fail? Government was not living up to its financial obligations towards the bank. There was widespread corruption, capacity of students to pay back the loan was not there, because there were no jobs and there are still no jobs.

"So you can imagine what will become of a bank that the loan equipment is not coming or is very low, the rate of payment is low or not coming. And we told them all of these but they went ahead to come up with the idea that well, we have calculated the cost of what we need to train an undergraduate and they have estimated that it will be N1 million that they will borrow from the bank. These students will borrow 1 million, but when they borrow, 70 per cent of it will be paid directly into the universities and 30 per cent will be given to students to maintain themselves. We smelt a rat. Why? Why are you insisting that students who do not have the capacity to pay should borrow and that this time around the money will not be given to them will be paid directly to universities irrespective of whether private or public," the don said.

Details later…

WAEC CERTIFICATE: Nigeria Now A Laughing Stock In W’Africa Over Buhari’s Certificate Saga

Posted: 04 Nov 2018 02:29 PM PST

President Muhammadu Buhari

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said that the public demonstrations that the Presidency may have procured a forged West African Examination Council (WAEC) Certificate Attestation and Confirmation for President Muhammadu Buhari has turned the country into a laughing stock in the West African sub-region and the entire global community.

The main opposition party said it is appalling that the president's handlers have succeeded in dragging a reputable institution as WAEC into public disrepute and opprobrium.

The party, in a statement Sunday by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Kola Ologbondiyan, said that Nigerians are quick to demonstrate marks of forgery in the attestation issued by the examination body.

According to him, "The development has turned our nation into a laughing stock in the West African sub-region and the entire global community, as our president is now being mentioned as beneficiary of a duplicitous act."

Ologbondiyan noted that a check on the attestation clearly shows that it does not have the 'Original Certificate Number', the key authentication feature in all genuine attestations by WAEC.

He stated: "Instead, a non-applicable is entered, indicating that the beneficiary does not have a certificate to be attested to, thus rendering the said attestation unauthenticated, fake and of no effect.

"Also, the attestation is for West African Senior School Certificate, which President Buhari couldn't have sat for, given that the Senior School Certificate Examination was established only in the late 1980s.

"Does it not smack of high level scam that the same WAEC, which, in 2015, confirmed that it does not have records of President Buhari's certificate, now had to send officials to present Mr. President with an attestation, that has no original certificate number?"

The opposition party said what the unauthenticated attestation has shown is that Buhari does not have a WAEC certificate, adding: "We urge his handlers to humbly so admit and apologise to the nation, having exhausted all gimmicks to mislead Nigerians."

The PDP added that by WAEC rules, attestations are only issued in the case of missing or destroyed certificate.

Ologbondiyan queried: "Why then should the exam body issue an attestation to President Buhari, whose certificate, he claimed are with the military and not missing or destroyed?

"If not intended to circumvent the system and deceive Nigerians, why did President Buhari's handlers choose to write to WAEC to issue an attestation when he, as the Commander-in-Chief, has the powers to direct the military to make available his credentials for all to see.

"The Buhari Presidency should know that there is no way the truth can be suppressed. In fact, the current disagreement between the Presidency and WAEC over who initiated the attestation deal is also very revealing. "

The PDP urged WAEC to redeem its image by handing over all its officials involved in the deal to the INTERPOL for investigation and prosecution, while also calling on the Nigeria Police to immediately invite Mr. President's handlers for questioning over this huge national embarrassment.

Atiku Lambast Buhari Over Donation Of $500,000 To Guinea Bissau

Posted: 04 Nov 2018 02:17 PM PST

President Buhari and Alhaji Atiku

Below is a Press statement from the Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Atiku Abubakar;

"Recently, we had cause to counsel the Buhari administration to be more prudent with national resources after the government declared its intention to sell national assets built by previous administrations to fund their business as usual 2019 budget.

Apparently, rather than give heed to our pro bono patriotic advise, the Buhari administration is persisting in the financial profligacy that has seen them destroy a once thriving economy.

In the latest instance, the Buhari government has announced that it is making a $500,000 donation to Guinea Bissau, along with other material donations.

Our response is to ask why a nation that has been officially named as the world headquarters for extreme poverty, will donate her resources to others instead of using them to solve pressing domestic problems?

This is the same government that is so cash-strapped that it has so far borrowed ₦13 trillion in 3 years putting our economy in even greater peril. How prudent is it to go about taking loans from whomsoever cares to lend you money and then turn around to give out those same monies even when your own people are suffering the worst forms of poverty they have ever endured?

We call on the Buhari administration to cut their coat according to their cloth. These huge loans they are collecting, only to squander it, will be repaid by future generations and limit the nation's ability to invest in projects that will Get Nigeria Working Again.

There are over a million Internally Displaced Persons in Nigeria. If you cannot adequately support your own people in dire need, what is the wisdom in crossing borders to support others?

We have the moral authority to question this administration's profligacy and imprudence, because Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the PDP was part of an administration that paid off Nigeria's entire foreign debt. We are therefore concerned to see this government piling on debt and then squandering it away without any consideration for the needs of her own people."

Atiku vs Buhari: What US institute Said About Who May Win Presidential Election

Posted: 04 Nov 2018 01:48 PM PST

Atiku and Buhari

The United States Institute of Peace, USIP, has predicted that the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Muhammadu Buhari may win the 2019 presidential election.

USIP said this in a report it published on the forthcoming general election in Nigeria.

The report also claimed that having peaceful election in Nigeria will depend on the performance of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

The report said though Nigerians feel their expectations were not met by the current administration, it would not cost Buhari his victory.

The USIP report contradicted the two predictions by The Economist magazine, which stated that Buhari would be defeated in the February poll.

Part of the report read, "Many Nigerians feel their hopes have not been met. Some respondents suggest the electorate is sufficiently disappointed that voter apathy will be greater in 2019 than it was in 2015, with the unifying narrative of change that helped elect the APC in 2015 much less compelling as a factor in mobilising the electorate, and perceptions that another defeat of the presidential incumbent is less likely to happen in 2019.

"Of all the state's institutions, most respondents felt that peaceful elections in 2019 are contingent on the performance of Nigeria's INEC," the report stated.

"Given the relative success of the 2015 elections, they (Nigerians) felt that INEC ought to be able to deliver credible elections again in 2019.

"They feared, however, that any regression from the level of performance achieved in 2015 could lead to violence because some would view the failings not as a result of incompetence but as deliberate attempts to frustrate the will of the voters.

"INEC should at least match the standards it set in 2015, and any regression could set the stage for violence."

2019 Election: I Warned You Against Joining APC, Quit Politics Now – Pastor Giwa Tells Olusola Oke

Posted: 04 Nov 2018 08:46 AM PST

Pastor Adewale Giwa, the senior Pastor of Awaiting The Second Coming Of Jesus Christ Gospel Church in Akure,  has advised the governorship candidate of the Alliance of Democracy in the last governorship election in Ondo State, Chief Olusola Oke to leave politics for another lucrative job.

Pastor Giwa, who was reacting to the statement made by Chief Oke who said he regretted rejoining the All Progressives Congress, APC, revealed that he (Giwa) personally warned the politician to remain in his previous party.

Oke had led his supporters to the APC shortly after he lost the 2016 governorship election.

The former National Legal Adviser of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and his supporters had since been sidelined in the scheme of things.

However, Giwa in a statement to DAILY POST said he knew Chief Oke would be used and dumped by the administration of Chief Oluwarotimi Akeredolu.

"Yes, I warned Chief Oke when he wanted to rejoin the APC, but didn't listen. Look at where he has ended up his political career.

"As a matter of fact, it is time for him to quit politics because he doesn't know the game. He needs to go learn the game more from professional politicians.

"Oke has lost followers with his inconsistency in politics, I do hope he has learnt a good lesson from his political downfall."

UPDATED: NLC, TUC’s Planned Strike Stopped By Court Order

Posted: 04 Nov 2018 05:45 AM PST

Nigerian Labour Congress

The organised labour has been restrained by the National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN) sitting in Abuja from proceeding on its planned nationwide indefinite industrial action.

Justice Sanusi Kado gave the order on Friday while delivering a ruling on an ex-parte application restraining the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) from embarking on the strike scheduled to commence on November 6.

According to a report by the Channels Television, the judge granted the application pending the determination of the substantive suit filed by the Federal Government and the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) against both unions.

Justice Sanusi also restrained the NLC, the TUC and the Incorporated Trustees of the Nigerian Governors Forum (listed as the first, second, and third defendants) from taking steps capable of destroying the subject of the dispute.

He said he was moved to granting the ex-parte application argued by the Solicitor General of the Federation (SGF), Dayo Apata, because of the likely devastating effect of the strike on the nation, its economy and the people.

The hearing of the main suit has been fixed for November 8.

The organised labour is demanding N30,000 as a new minimum wage for workers in the country, as against the existing N18,000.

Following a series of negotiations and meetings between the government and labour leaders which ended in a deadlock, the NLC and TUC threatened to embark on a fresh nationwide strike on Tuesday next week.

The unions had explained that the decision was necessary following what they described as the government's unwillingness to implement a new minimum wage for workers in the country.

Reacting to the new minimum wage demanded by the workers, the Nigeria Governors' Forum said most states lacked the capacity to pay such an amount.

The governors who said some of their colleagues were still struggling to pay the existing N18,000, however, agreed to pay N22,500.

This was strongly rejected by labour leaders who had insisted that there was no going back on their decision.

Rape Suspect Give Reasons He Raped My Mother And Mother-In-Law

Posted: 04 Nov 2018 05:17 AM PST

One Shekari David, a 32-year-old farmer from Kaduna state, who was accused of raping his mother and mother-in-law, has confessed to the crime, saying a spirit pushes him to older women.

David was recently arrested by operatives of the Inspector General of Police Special Intelligence Response Team, IRT.

He was nabbed in connection to several armed robberies and rape attacks in Kaura Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

The 32-year-old has confessed to raping his own mother and mother-in-law who he said were between the ages of 65 and 70.

David also confessed to the IRT that his wife had abandoned him and married another man because of his penchant for raping older women.

He was reportedly arrested in his hideout in Manchie area of Kaura LGA following a tip off by a member of a vigilante while a stolen motorcycle was also recovered from him.

The vigilante man also described David as a notorious serial rapist who specialized in raping older women residing within Manchie and environs.

Members of the community were said to have reported to the vigilante that on two occasions, David raped his own mother and his mother-in-law.

In his confession, David said, "I am a farmer and I was once married but my wife abandoned me due to my penchant for raping older women.

"I don't know if I am under a spell but whenever I am drunk a spirit comes into me and I will be going around looking for women. I have been beaten over this issue severally but I still can't control myself whenever I get drunk.

"I raped my mother during our last Moroha Festival after I got drunk. I couldn't find any old woman to rape and when I got home I found my mother sleeping and I penetrated and raped her.

"My mother screamed when she saw me on top of her and our neighbours gathered. Everyone saw that I was drunk and when I became sober I begged her for forgiveness and she accepted.

"When my wife heard about it she was angry and she left the house and went back to her parent before she later found another man who married her.

"Not long after that, I attended another festival in my wife's community known as Mahuta and I became drunk again. In the night I went to the house of my ex-wife's mother and found her sleeping. I then raped my mother-in-law but the woman shouted and people came around and caught me.

"I was given a beaten of my life before I was asked to go. I don't know what usually comes over me when I am drunk. That spirit normally pushes me to rape older women."
