JUST IN: Reasons Obasanjo May Withdraw His Support For Atiku

Posted: 05 Nov 2018 05:13 PM PST

Atiku and Obasanjo

The Arewa Consultative Forum(ACF) has disclosed that Forer president, Olusegun Obasanjo may withdraw his support for the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar before the 2019 elections.

Secretary-General of the forum, Anthony Sani  told Independent Newspaper on Sunday.

"Former President Obasanjo is a factor in national politics having governed the country under both military and democracy. His commitment to one united Nigeria cannot be taken away from him, but whether such attributes can translate into electoral value is in doubt. More so that Obasanjo has been a product beyond himself.

"When the late Murtala Muhammed was assassinated in 1976, the military hierarchy at that time asked Obasanjo to take over as Head of State.

"It was not his efforts that got him the position. Also in 1999, the retired Generals and Northern leaders went and brought him out and made him the president. These are not his personal efforts. So, Obasanjo is a product of forces beyond him."

He pointed out that despite Obasanjo's endorsement, the Atiku camp is not rejoicing yet because the former could change his mind at any moment.

"As to whether Nigerians will pander to the former president's endorsement of the presidential candidate of the main opposition party is also in doubt, precisely because of his inconsistency that does not accommodate conviction and vision expected of a statesman of his status.

"Consider the former president tore his party card of PDP and wrote off both APC and PDP as unserviceable. He then formed a nonpartisan Coalition Movement which he later transmuted to a political party called ADC against his earlier 'new year resolution' not to be partisan.

"Former President Obasanjo said God would not forgive him if he endorsed his former VP for president, only for him to now leave his ADC and endorse Atiku.

"I believe not only Nigerians but even Atiku himself cannot bask in the glow of the endorsement by Obasanjo out of the fear that the manifest inconsistency can make him change his mind before the elections," he said.

BREAKING: Organised Labour Suspends Nationwide Planned Strike

Posted: 05 Nov 2018 04:50 PM PST

Organised Labour

The Nationwide planned strike of the organized labour has been suspended. This is coming on heels of marathon meetings with the Federal government.

UPDATE:

A Tripartite Committee set up by the Federal Government agreed on N30,000 new minimum wage. Nigeria Labour Congress President, Ayuba Waba (m) addressing a rally on Good Governance before a delegation took a list of Labour demands to Ag. President Yemi Osinbajo at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Photo by Abayomi Adeshida 09/02/2017 At the end of the first meeting of the tripartite committee set up to arrive at an agreeable minimum wage template, Chairperson of the committee and former Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Ms Ama People had said while the federal government insisted on N24,000, organized labour maintained its earlier stance of N30, 000.

She however said the government pleaded with labour to call off its planned strike "We have concluded and we have a little challenge with what we call Chapter 5 of our report, that is where we have the numbers and the figures we used for the negotiations and the figures that we concluded with and the committee has two figures: the N24, 000 suggested by the federal government and the N30, 000 given by the organized labour.

"There is no stalemate. We have finished and we have signed it but we are insisting that the strike must be called off. There are still two figures, N24, 000 and N34, 000. You know that labour came up with a figure of N66, 500 but when we put all that together with the figure we got from the states…so, we put all that in a basket plus the initial figure that the federal government recommended which was N20, 700. We put them together in a basket and came up with four scenarios, we worked with one of the scenarios and that was how we agreed on that N24, 000 and N30, 000 respectively", said Ms People.

Asked on what the committee was going to submit, she said both figures would be forwarded to the president. On his part, Labour and Employment minister, Chris Ngige said the committee was working to secure an appointment with President Muhammadu Buhari, adding that its resolution would be passed to the Federal Executive Council, then the National Economic Council and later the National Council of State after which the president would initiate an Executive Bill to be transmitted yo the National Assembly.

He said; "We are making progress. The governors' figure should be the figure of the federal government. We are just trying to carry them along. That is why we made the discussions 'tripartite plus'. It is just because we want to carry them along, otherwise the federal government speaks for governments. Yes, the figures are standing but we know that there are other processes. It has to go through the Federal Executive Council, the National Executive Council and the National Council of State, then an Executive Bill will be transmitted to the National Assembly". Asked if the two figures would pass through those processes,

he said; "Yes, because the federal government figure is noted and is also weighty because it says that it depends on the ability to pay, affordability and sustainability. "Labour are quiet satisfied, we are doing the needful, we have passed the rubicon. The only aspect of it now that we need to do is to fix an appointment for the handing over of the report to Mr President.

We are reconvening tonight because that appointment has to be gotten because the president has gone home. He is not just sitting down in the office. If we get the appointment now, we will reconvene later and agree on how to proceed. "The governors have no choice now because they have attached themselves to us because we are the supreme sovereign, they are minor sovereigns", he added.

On whether the strike would go on as planned on Tuesday, he said, "no", referring all enquiries to labour leaders. All the labour leaders at the meeting however declined media enquiries, saying they were on break and the meeting would reconvene later tonight.

WAEC CERTIFICATE: See How Buhari Is Committing Corruption, Deceiving Nigerians – PDP

Posted: 05 Nov 2018 03:58 PM PST

President Muhammadu Buhari

The main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Monday alleged that President Muhammadu Buhari displayed the "highest form of corruption" by entangling himself in a "web of corruption through, trying to launder his WAEC certificate scandal."

PDP said instead of being "remorseful and apologizing to Nigerians," Buhari was trying to deceive Nigerians about his certificate.

A statement by PDP's spokesperson, Kola Ologbondiyan said "The Presidency displayed the highest form of corruption and decadence by involving in manipulations, forgery and lies in an attempt to hoodwink Nigerians with bogus claims even when it had become clear that Mr. President does not possess the claimed WAEC certificate, Daily Post reports.

"Nothing is more humiliating to our nation than having our Presidency entangled in high-level of international corruption involving the name and personality of the President, the latest being the procuring and parading of fake WAEC certificate
attestation.

"We note that the development has further worsened the image of the President, whose administration is overburdened by allegations of ginormous financial corruption and which has not been able to provide explanation for the over N10 trillion siphoned under its watch, particularly in the oil and gas sector.

"The world now knows why the Buhari Presidency lacks the rectitude to genuinely fight corruption and the reason it has been harbouring liars, fraudulent individuals including certificate forgers both in ministerial and other top government positions as well as running the most corrupt administration in the history of our nation.

"Now that all the shenanigans are laid bare the PDP challenges President Buhari to, in his words, tell Nigerians how he would describe any person who claims to be what he is not, or claims to posses what he does not have.

"Finally, we urge Nigerians to continue to be alert and united in their determination to vote out this incompetent, deceitful, duplicitous, disconnected and overtly corrupt Buhari administration, which has brought so much anguish and shame to our nation."

Buhari Begs Nigerian Workers, As He Speaks On The New Minimum Wage

Posted: 05 Nov 2018 03:10 PM PST

President Muhammadu Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari, Monday appealed to the Organised Labour to reconsider its planned nationwide strike on November 6th over new Minimum Wage.

The President made this appeal when he received members of the Association of Retired Career Ambassadors of Nigeria led by Ambassador Oladapo Fafowora at the Presidential Villa on Monday, Daily Post reports.

The NLC strike is planned to begin on Tuesday, November 6 and in a statement by Femi Adesina, the President called for calm, saying his administration was doing more with fewer resources.

The statement read in part: "President Buhari also appealed to the Nigeria Labour Congress to consider what this government inherited and the more it is doing with fewer resources in putting the economy right.

"The president reassured Nigerians that his administration will sustain massive investments to upgrade and develop the country's transport and power infrastructure.

"He said Nigerians will never forget the ''lost opportunity between 1999 and 2015,'' when the nation had huge resources at its disposal.

"There is no part of the country I haven't been to, having attempted to be President four times.

"I know the condition of our roads. The rails were literally killed, there was no power despite the admittance of some previous leadership that they spent $16bn on the sector.

"Today, we are getting our priorities right and we believe that of the three fundamental issues we campaigned on – security, the economy and fighting corruption-, we have remained very relevant and Nigerians believe we have achieved something.

"I will do my best to see that where there are possibilities of making a quick improvement on infrastructure, we will do it."

The Kano State House of Assembly has been ordered by a Kano High Court sitting in Kano to stop the investigation of bribery allegation levelled against Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje that he collected $5 million bribe from contractors.

In Suit No. K/497/2018 instituted by Bar. Muhammad Zubair, National Coordinator of Lawyers for Sustainable Democracy in Nigeria against the Kano state House of Assembly, Hon. Baffa Babba Dab Agundi and other members of the seven-man Investigative Committee and Attorney-General and Commissioner of Justice of Kano state, the presiding Judge, Justice A.T. Badamasi issued an Interim Injunction, restraining the House of Assembly's Seven-man Investigative Committee from further investigation of the said bribery allegation.

According to the Judge, "upon carefully run through the ex-parte application dated 5th day of November, 2018 filed by Counsel for the plaintiff/applicant accompanied by a 23 paragraphs affidavit duly deposed to by Muhammad Zubair, a legal practitioner as well as the written address in support of Application thereto:

"The Respondents should be served before the close of work today (5 November). Accelerated hearing is hereby ordered and the respondents are given four days to respond to this application after service.

"Parties should maintain status quo ante pending the hearing of the Motion on Notice."

The Judge, however, adjourned the matter to Monday, 12 November, 2018 for hearing.

Speaking to reporters at the NUJ Press Centre, the plaintiff who is also the National Coordinator of Lawyers for Sustainable Democracy in Nigeria, Bar. Zubair said that, "we followed with keen interest the investigation being carried out by a seven-man Committee of the Kano state House of Assembly.

"We followed the issue and analyzed the provision of the law; we came to the conclusion that the House of Assembly have no right or constitutional backing to investigate the said bribery allegation. We believe it is an illegal action.

"As a pro-democracy group, we served the Kano state House of Assembly a letter on the 24th of October and gave them 24 hours ultimatum to stop the investigation, but the House leadership did not reply our letter. They did not invite us to hear from us. The House has a legal department which ought to have looked at our letter, rather they ignored us.

"Having followed what has happened, we felt that the Kano state House of Assembly did not heed to our advice. So, we decided to go to Court where we believe we can get justice. Already, we have served the three parties involved in the case; and the Court has ordered them to maintain the status quo ante pending the hearing of the Motion on Notice."

DEFECTION SEASON: Thousands Of ‘Original Members’ Of APC Set To Dump Party

Posted: 05 Nov 2018 02:17 PM PST

APC Members

The news of thousands of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, in Cross River State, reveals that they have concluded all plans to dump the party.

The aggrieved members, who claimed to be the 'original members' of the party, are accusing President Muhamnadu Buhari of not protecting them.

The APC members, who are likely to jump ship to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, had alleged fowl play in the conduct of the governorship and National Assembly primaries in the state.

This was revealed by a group, Cross River APC Vanguard, in a statement signed by Eyo Henshaw, spokesman for the group on Monday, in Calabar.

The group disclosed that thousands of its followers, which it described as the original members of the party in the state, have perfected plans to switch camp and dump the APC, owing to what it called apparent hijack by elements from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

The original members, according to the group, were those who had been with President Mohammadu Buhari right from his days in "Siberia" in CPC, noting, however, that they have completely been sidelined in the affairs of the party and gradually being edged out by the latter day joiners from the PDP.

"We find it troubling and worrisome that the governorship candidate who is recognized by the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party, Senator John Owan Enoh, was until recently a member of the PDP.

"As if this was not bad enough, he picked Ntufam Ekpo Okon as his running mate barely two days after Okon contested and lost the senate ticket of the PDP for Cross River South.

"Was this a mere coincidence? I do not think so.

"Do not forget also that Senator Ndoma Egba, former Senate Leader, who was in the senate for 12 years, was given the APC ticket for the Central Senatorial Zone of the state.

"Recall that he had barely left the PDP when he was made Chairman of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

"It is becoming clearer by the day that those of us who have been with Mr. President since his days in political wilderness have been abandoned and left to regret our support for all these years.

"Imagine how a man like the Minister of Niger Delta, Pastor Usani Usani, who was with the President in CPC, is being treated with so much disregard.

"He is being ridiculed by the party he suffered to nurture. It is as if he is nobody in the party.

"Elements from the PDP have hijacked our party and are having a field day. We are not going to remain in the party and continue to suffer such shame. Enough is enough," he said.

2019 PRESIDENCY: Buhari Lists 20 Reasons Fuel Price Can’t Be Reduced,As He Mocks Atiku

Posted: 05 Nov 2018 02:03 PM PST

Atiku and Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has listed 20 reasons fuel price can not be brought down as he mocks Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the PDP flag bearer.

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Presidential Candidate, had claimed in his campaign promise, that he will crash fuel price from N145 to N90 if elected as President.

Speaking through, Festus Keyamo, SAN, Director, Strategic Communications of his Campaign Organisation, Buhari described the promise as laughable and a move geared towards dragging the country backward.

In a press release issued to DAILY POST on Monday, the President through his campaign organization spokesperson, highlighted 20 reasons crashing the pump price of petrol will only be of grave damage to the country.

The statement added, "Our attention has been drawn to a statement credited to the PDP a few days ago that its presidential candidate, H.E. Alhaji Atiku Abubakar will, if elected President, crash the pump price of petrol to N97 per litre.

"However, there is no better evidence of desperation and phantom promises by the main opposition's candidate than this statement.

"At today's international price of gasoline, no supplier will ever contemplate any scheme that will deliver products at such ridiculous price. Those in the sector reading this must be having a good laugh at the opposition.

"A simple check at the international prices will show that even at the world market where gasoline is procured, it will cost not less than N158 to procure a litre of crude oil.

"When you add the cost of refining, plus freight, finance and port charges (premium), there is no magic that one would employ to supply the finished product at N145 a litre. Presently, the landing cost of the product in Nigeria hovers around N205 per litre.

"The claim by Alhaji Atiku Abubakar is opportunism of the highest order. Nigerians are aware that higher crude oil prices will translate to higher government revenues and a prudent administration will convert the resources to the benefit of the common man.

"This is exactly what President Muhammadu Buhari has done since he mounted the saddle in 2015. The President has worked out a transparent system whereby the whole subsidy regime and scam has been totally eliminated. There is no cash incentive or payment again to middlemen.

"In line with the President's transparent policy, we lay bare the present system as follows:

"(1) What obtained under the past government was the ABUSE of the subsidy regime.

"(2) The system under the past Government was that independent marketers and all sort of persons were allowed to import petroleum products on their own, declare non-existent volumes of these products and get paid for these non-existent volumes.

"(3) In addition, government would then pay them cash for the "loses" (subsidy) in selling at fixed market price.

"(4) Under this old system, more than N3trillion was lost.

"(5) However, when these independent marketers could no longer bring in products due to high prices of crude and make profit at the fixed market price of N145 to a litre, President Buhari refused to further raise the price of petroleum products beyond the N145 per litre. The President was also not prepared to go back to the subsidy regime. Therefore, President Buhari stopped the scam of overblown volumes and subsidy payments to middlemen.

"(6) As a result, NNPC took full charge of getting products for consumption.

"(7) Under this arrangement, NNPC would swap crude oil for the exact value of finished products in refineries anywhere the products are available around the world.

"(8) Middlemen are only allowed to go and ferry the products and bring into the country and hand over to NNPC.

"(9) NNPC will only then pay them for the cost of the logistics of bringing the products in (this is what is called premium).

"(10) Even this cost of logistics is now subject to competitive bidding unlike before.

"(11) In the past, mareters used to charge $86 per metric ton as cost of logistics (premium) to bring in products.

"(12) Under Buhari's regime when it was subjected to competitive bidding, the highest the government got was $7 per metric ton as cost of logistics to bring in products. More than N3billion has been saved by this bidding process.

"(13) Having gotten the value of the crude oil back in terms of finished products, NNPC will now sell at government controlled price which is far lower than the landing cost.

"(14) Presently, the landing cost is around N205 per litre, but government sells at N145 per litre.

"(15) Therefore, Government just records a loss in NNPC instead of paying cash to middlemen. That loss it suffers is fully reflected when NNPC pays money into the Federation Account.

"(16) This also further affects the money accruing to States monthly from the Federation Account.

"(17) As a result, this loss that NNPC suffers, (which is recorded as cost of operation of NNPC) is fully subjected to scrutiny by the National Economic Council which also includes the PDP Governors and the Federation Accounts Allocation Committee (FAAC), which includes Commissioners of Finance from PDP States.

"(18) If anybody alleges a scam in the process, then the PDP Governors and the States would also be involved because they are involved in jointly scrutinizing the records of NNPC at NEC and FAAC.

"(19) No cash settlement for any under recovery is involved, therefore there is no basis for any subsidy payments which is the avenue for fraud.

"(20) Therefore, it is true that Buhari is not paying subsidy to anybody.

"It has become necessary for Nigerians to interrogate Alhaji Atiku Abubakar further in order for him to lay bare before the Nigerian people the so-called 'template' he has developed to crash the price. This is not a game of tricks or hide-and-seek. He must come clean.

"Nigerians await the DETAILS of the TRANSPARENT system Alhaji Atiku Abubakar intends to adopt that would (1) Eliminate fraudulent cash payments to middlemen and (2) Make the product available at all times."

2019 Election: See Reasons Jerry Gana Urged Court To Disqualify Donald Duke As SDP Presidential Candidate

Posted: 05 Nov 2018 01:42 PM PST

Mr. Donald Duke

Professor Jerry Gana, a chieftain of Social Democratic Party (SDP), has asked the FCT High Court sitting in Maitama, to disqualify Donald Duke as a presidential candidate on the platform of the Party,  in the 2019 general elections.

Gana asked the court to nullify the emergence of the former Cross River State governor, on the grounds that the process that produced him violated the constitution of the party.

Duke polled 812 votes to defeat the former Minister, who scored 611 votes at the SDP National Convention in Abuja on October 7.

"In the party's constitution as provided under section 15(3), it was stipulated that the party will respect the principle of rotation and zoning because it is important to building up of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

"The provision specifies that the position of national chairman of SDP cannot come from the same part of Nigeria," Gana said.

The case has been adjourned till November 13 due to the indisposition of the presiding judge, Justice Husseini Baba Yusuf.

VIOLENT PROTEST: One Feared Dead As Police Arrest 15 Suspects In Rivers State

Posted: 05 Nov 2018 01:23 PM PST

Nigeria Police

At least one person was reportedly killed on Monday by a security operative at the Nkpolu axis of the East West Road during a protest by indigenes of the community.

The indigenes were protesting against the bad state of the road caused by persistent flooding.

Four people were also reported injured during the fracas.

Some properties, including a building and petrol tankers were destroyed by angry youths in the area in reaction to the death of one of them.

The Rivers State Police Command said 15 persons have been arrested following the violent protest.

Spokesman of the Command, Nnamdi Omoni in an interview with DAILY POST, however, said report of the death of one of the protesters was yet to be ascertained.

Omoni said preliminary investigation from the scene of the Protest indicated that the protesters violently attacked some security agents who were enroute Bayelsa State.

The Police Spokesman further noted that normalcy has been restored to the scene with deployment of an Area Commander and a detachment of personnel.

However, Chairman of Obio-Akpor Local Government area, Solomon Eke has denied that his security details pulled the triggered on the protester who died at Nkpolu community.

Eke in a telephone interview put the blame on security agencies especially the Nigerian Army whom he claimed, "were shooting at the youths".

He expressed displeasure over what played out during the protest, adding that he only went to the scene of the protest to play his role as the Chief Security Officer of the Local government.

But spokesman of 6 Division of the Nigerian Army, Port Harcourt, Col. Aminu Iliyasu, dismissed the claim that anybody was killed by soldiers.

According to Iliyasu, "It is cheap blackmail to say that soldiers killed anybody. They smashed the windscreens of our vehicles, including that of the escort. The mob threw stones and other objects at them.

"For them to extricate themselves and because of the blockade, the Soldiers had to turn back to base. In this era of social media, if somebody was killed, you would have seen it all over the social media."

The University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate, now known as Cambridge Assessment, has said it can only release the certificate of President Muhammadu Buhari if he makes a request.
