El-Zakzaky Wife’s Bail Applications Rejected By Court, Fixes Trial For Jan 22

Posted: 07 Nov 2018 10:05 PM PST

Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky

Agency Report:

A Kaduna High Court, yesterday, rejected the bail application filed by the leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, IMN, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky and his wife, Zinat.

El-Zakzaky is facing trial over allegations of culpable homicide, unlawful assembly and disruption of public peace, among other charges.

The Shi'ites leader has been in the custody of the Department of State Services, DSS, since December 2015.

There was heavy security presence around the court premises during the hearing.

Yakubu Sabo, Kaduna Police Public Relations Officer, had earlier said a ban on all forms of processions in the state was still in force.

The judge, Justice Gideon Kurada, while delivering his ruling, ordered that El-Zakzaky and his wife remain in the custody of DSS and adjourned the case to January 22, 2019 for trial.

Counsel to the plaintiffs, Maxwell Kyom, had earlier applied for bail for his client, citing health grounds.

Newsmen were not allowed into the court during the proceedings.

Court unconvinced about health claims

Meanwhile, the prosecution counsel told journalists after the proceedings that the court was not convinced that there were not enough medical facilities to take care of the defendants at the DSS facilities.

He said: "He has not proved to the court that facilities he enjoys are not sufficient and his wife did not show any sufficient medical challenge per se from past file.

"The court has ordered that he remains in custody throughout trial and that prosecutors produce its witnesses to testify in support of the charges made against them."

He added that the third and fourth defendants, Yakubu Yahaya and Sunusi Abdulqadir, were not in court, but a bench warrant was being processed to get them arrested.

The 'offences'

Earlier, the defendant's counsel stated that "we are discussing with our client on what steps to take. We will soon take a decision on whether to appeal or not."

Kaduna State government had filed an eight-count charge against the IMN leader, his wife and the two other IMN leaders based in Katsina and Kano.

The IMN leader, his wife, Yahaya and Abdulqadir were charged with alleged conspiracy and abbeting culpable homicide, among other related offences. NAN

AGF Asks Court To Deny Bail Application To Alleged Importers Of 1,570 Rifles

Posted: 07 Nov 2018 09:44 PM PST

Court

The Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) has asked the Federal High Court, Lagos, to reject the bail applications filed by the two businessmen, Ayogu Great James and Ifeuwa Moses Christ, who were charged for unlawful importation of 1,570 pump action rifles into the country.

The AGF, in his argument yesterday, asked the court to refuse the accused persons bail on the ground that their offences bordered on national security.

But counsel to the accused, Mahmud Mogaji (SAN) and Wale Adesokan (SAN), prayed the court to admit their clients to bail in the most liberal terms, as the prosecution has not been able to contradict all the disposition of their affidavits.

The two senior lawyers told the court that the only prosecution's contention to their clients' affidavits was an Appeal Court's decisions, which stated that once a case is of national security, no bail should be granted.

They prayed the court to discountenance the prosecution's counter-affidavits.

However, the prosecution counsel, a Director in the Federal Ministry of Justice, Mr. Julius Ajakaiye, who also urged the court to dismiss the bail applications on the ground of national security, said the third defendant, Ifeuwa Christ, the alleged shipper of the illegal fire-arms, was elusive for more than a year but was arrested by the Customs and other security agencies.

He, therefore, pleaded with the court to discountenance the bail applications and dismiss same accordingly.

The trial judge, Justice Saliu Seidu, adjourned ruling till November 21, 2018.

Plot To Replace Shekarau By Kano State APC Thickens

Posted: 07 Nov 2018 09:16 PM PST

Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau

The plot to divert the senatorial ticket of former minister of education, Ibrahim Shekarau, by the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State has reached advance stage.

Reports have it that the party apparatchik was planning to replace Shekarau with another highly-favoured candidate for the Kano Central senatorial ticket.

The two-term governor defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC about two months ago, after the PDP leadership in the state was ceded to Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso. No thanks to long political rivalry between the two former governors.

Shekarau accepted to return to the APC on some conditions, including automatic senatorial ticket, The Guardian learnt.

A source within the government circles confirmed the plot, adding that it was due to alleged criminal case against Shekarau before the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Shekarau is standing trial over alleged N950 million fraud instituted against him by the EFCC.

"He (Shekarau) will be removed in due course. The arrangement is already perfected. Of course, the party has till November 17 to substitute his name. The party is being very careful and running from legal battle that will led to automatic disqualification after the election," the source hinted.

When contacted, state secretary of the APC, Zakari Sarina, who claimed to be unaware of the move, however, confirmed that five members of the House of Assembly would be replaced.

Although Zakari revealed that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had notified the party of candidates with criminal cases before the EFCC.

Shekarau's spokesman, Yau Sule, however refuted the report, insisting that the case was part of political blackmail.

PDP Speaks On Alleged Arrest Of Oshiomhole By DSS Over Bribery

Posted: 07 Nov 2018 08:39 PM PST

Adams Oshiomhole

Nigeria's main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has said the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Adams Oshiomhole, should be probed and made to face the full wrath of the law over allegations of him receiving bribes during the party's recent primaries.

Hon. Felix Imoisili, the Secretary, Edo State Chapter of the PDP, stated this on Wednesday in an exclusive interview with the DAILY POST.

The National Chairman of the ruling APC, was reportedly grilled by the Department of State Services, DSS, operatives for nine hours after some APC governors alleged that he received bribes during the party's primary elections across the country.

Reacting, Imoisili said Oshiomhole no longer had the immunity he enjoyed as governor, hence, was not above the law.

In his words: "If somebody has committed an infraction of the law, he should be made to face the wrath of law, because the law is not a respecter of persons.

"If in the course of the APC primaries he (Oshiomhole) did certain things that at variance with what the law says; that is, the extant laws, he should be made the full wrath of the law.

"There is nobody above the law. The rule of law must be obeyed. We are not looking at his office. The position he currently occupies does not give him immunity. Nobody is bigger than the Nigerian legal system."

Recall that the APC spokesman, Lanre Issa-Onilu, had said the party was not officially informed about the DSS detention of the national chairman of the party, hence, only Oshiomhole could either confirm or deny the report.

Okorocha Sues IGP Idris, EFCC To court, Seeks N1bn Damages

Posted: 07 Nov 2018 03:44 PM PST

Chief Rochas Okorocha

Chief Rochas Okorocha, The Governor of Imo State, has reportedly instituted a legal action against the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris over the "ransacking" of his house in Jos, Plateau State with court warrant.

Okorocha, who filed his case before justice Musa Kurya of the Jos Federal High Court, said the act was a breach of his fundamental human right.

The governor is demanding N1.25 billion as general damages for the action, Daily Post reports.

Also joined in the suit are Plateau Commissioner of Police, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice.

During yesterday's proceeding, Okorocha, through his counsel, Markus Saleh (SAN), informed the court that the respondents had on May 3, invaded his residence in Jos.

He claimed that they held his family members and staff hostage during their search.

Against this backdrop, Okorocha urged the court to declare the action as "illegal, null and void" because they had no authorisation from court to search his residence.

He also prayed the court for a perpetual injunction against the respondents from further searching his houses across the country.

The governor sought for an order declaring that only the Imo House of Assembly had the constitutional rights and power to supervise, monitor, legislate, appropriate and demand accounting of public funds of the state from him.

He prayed the court to order the respondents to pay him N1 billion as general damages and N25 million as cost of instituting the case.

After listening to his submission, Justice Kurya adjourned the matter to January 24.

JUST IN: How Atiku Got His US Visa

Posted: 07 Nov 2018 03:18 PM PST

Alhaji Atiku Abubakar

The Buhari Media Organisation has revealed how the Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP Atiku Abubakar was able to get his US Visa.

The group claims that a U.S. lobbyist was paid millions of dollars to secure an American visa for Atiku, PoliticsNGR reports.

The Chairman, Niyi Akinsiju and Secretary, Cassidy Madueke, said this in a statement jointly signed in Abuja on Tuesday, describing the effort as another chapter in PDP's "book of corruption".

The organisation said that the PDP had itself claimed it would be paying Brian Ballard, who is believed to be close to U.S. President Donald Trump, the equivalent of N400 million over a one year period to ostensibly lobby Washington on behalf of its candidate ahead of the 2019 Presidential election.

The group added that even if Trump's friend convinced the U.S. authorities to clear the path for Atiku to finally enter the U.S., it would not clear the allegation of corruption scandals that over the years stuck to it.

According to the group, Nigerians were not prepared to easily forget how the PDP Presidential candidate's name featured in high-profile sleaze probe, ranging from that of the Petroleum Trust Development Fund (PTDF) to Siemens during his 8-year tenure as Vice President.

"Not even a close ally of Trump can wipe clean a slate of corruption that took years of intense begging for his former principal to reluctantly accept his apology but which he still wants him to seek the forgiveness of Nigerians".

The group, however, stated that it was not surprised that a party with credibility problem should think the solution to its problem was in throwing money around.

"These are people that have been conditioned to see dollar rain as solutions to local credibility problems.

"Coming soon after they had shared wads of dollars among party delegates; they did not feel bad spending more to boost the economy of Dubai where they have been holding strategy sessions.

"The same people have signed a deal of 90,000 dollars a month to secure an American visa for a morally challenged presidential candidate.

"They are busy boosting businesses in other countries, yet they are running a presidential campaign with the theme of 'making Nigeria great again. How ironic!" BMO added.

"We want Nigerians to see the difference between President Muhammadu Buhari whose party does not need to spend money in any currency to whitewash his image and that of a candidate that needs to pay the equivalent of N400 million to clean its image in just one country."

Samuel Akpobome Emobor

An-18 year old boy, Samuel Akpobome Emobor, has confessed that he killed his mother and slept with her corpse for the purpose of money ritual.

Samuel who hails from Oghara in Delta State committed the act at their rented apartment in Ologbo community in Ikpoba-Okha local government area.

Speaking to newsmen when he was paraded at the Edo State Police Command, Samuel said he was pushed to commit the act by a ritualist who sells drugs in the community, the Nation Newspaper reports.

According to him, "I wanted to use my mother for ritual. I am 18 years old. My father is dead. It was one man called One Love that told me to use my mother for money ritual. He promised to give me N50,000 if I killed my mother and sleep with her. He said I should cut my mother's ear and fingers and bring them to him.

"I wanted to cut the ears and fingers before the people came in. I slept with my mother only once. I pressed my mother's neck to kill her while she was sleeping. The One Love sells drugs. He put something inside the drink he gave and he told me to go and kill my mother.

"The day I went to his house with policemen, the man has ran away. I hail from Oghara. I work in a pure water factory.

"I now feel very bad because I was beaten badly by people. I did what the ritualist told me."

APC Speaks On Adams Oshiomhole’s Arrest By DSS, Reveals Next Move

Posted: 07 Nov 2018 02:45 PM PST

APC

The ruling All Progressives Congress APC has denied knowledge of the detention and interrogation of its National Chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole by operatives of the Department of State Services, DSS.

Reacting to reports of the questioning of the Chairman, National Publicity Secretary of the party, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu said Mr Oshiomhole is currently out of the country and could not immediately respond to the "rumour", PoliticsNGR reports.

"We do not have any information on this rumour. More so, the Chairman is not around in the country to confirm or deny this. As soon as we have any relevant information, you'll be updated", he said.

Oshiomhole was said to have been invited for questioning Sunday night following petitions from some aggrieved governors of the party, accusing him of subverting the recent primary elections of the party due to some pecuniary interests.

The party said Comrade Oshiomhole travelled abroad Monday on personal grounds, declining further details about the trip.

The DSS operatives were said to have asked him to resign following a deluge of complaints about his handling of the party primaries.

2019 Election: Tinubu Made A “Foolish Mistake” With Buhari, Yorubas Will Vote Atiku – Afenifere

Posted: 07 Nov 2018 02:23 PM PST

Asiwaju Bola Tinubu

Chief Ayo Adebanjo, elder statesman and Afenifere chieftain, has said the Yoruba Nation will not be deceived again by the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, to vote for President Muhammadu Buhari next year.

Speaking with Daily Independent, Adebanjo, revealed he has thrown his weight behind Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

According to him, Tinubu succeeded in selling Buhari to the South-West in 2015, due to his claim that the president has integrity and the willpower needed to turn the fortunes of the country around.

According to Adebanjo, Tinubu himself has realised he made a great mistake entering into alliance with Buhari, but he is ashamed of saying it out.

"Do you think we are stupid people in the South-West? Yoruba people are more intelligent than all that. Tinubu succeeded in 2015 because of the fake integrity attached to Buhari. He succeeded in bringing Buhari because of the fake integrity attached to him but the last three years has exposed him to be fake.

"People have seen him to be fake. He is not somebody anyone can rely upon and I have no doubt in my mind that Tinubu would have seen the stupidity of aligning with him. By now, Tinubu must have realised the foolish mistake he made by aligning with him but he will not come out to admit it.

"Yoruba people are too intelligent to be used again. Once bitten, twice shy. Tinubu has sold the Yoruba by aligning with Buhari, even at this stage. He agreed with Buhari to do restructuring, to do federalism. When the man now got there and he is not doing it, has Tinubu got the courage to pull out?

"And I have said it to him and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo. They are unfair to the Yoruba because everybody is thinking that because they represent the Yoruba, all the things against the race, they would address them. But they are quiet on them all.

"There are killings right and left, but they are quiet. They are quiet on the issue of revenue allocation. Even the case of local government under this restructuring, Tinubu took Obasanjo to court, it is part of restructuring programme and the man who handled the case in court was Osinbajo.

"They won the case at the Supreme Court. Under what principle did they take the then President Obasanjo to court? They sold out and the same Osinbajo, who took Obasanjo to court for not following the federal system, is now saying he does not understand what the federal system means".

JUST IN: See Reasons Adams Oshiomhole Was Arrested By DSS

Posted: 07 Nov 2018 01:31 PM PST

Comrade Adams Oshiomhole

Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, the National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC,  was briefly detained by the Department of State Security Services, DSS on Sunday.

According to Cable, Oshiomhole was grilled by DSS operatives for nine hours after some APC governors alleged that he received bribes during the party's primary elections across the country.

He was also pressured to resign during interrogation by the DSS.

Oshiomhole refused highlighting that he would only do so if he loses the confidence of President Muhammadu Buhari.

The APC chairman told the DSS that the president was in the loop of every action he took during the party's primaries.

"Adams Oshiomhole was arrested by the DSS, they didn't show him any petition. It was alleged by some governors that he collected bribe during the primaries," a source said.

"He was told to resign and he told DSS operatives that he will resign if he loses the confidence of the president. He said everything the party did, he (Buhari) was in the know."

Another source said the president expressed shock at the governors' move, saying he was not aware of the development.

"On Monday night Oshiomhole met with the president and briefed him on what happened and the president was shocked. The president said he did not know about it and promised to look into it," the source said.

The APC primaries were marred by controversies. Elections in some states had to be repeated.

Buhari Has Not Approved N30,000 Minimum Wage – Presidency

Posted: 07 Nov 2018 12:33 AM PST

President Muhammadu Buhari

The Presidency has frowned at the misinterpretation of President Muhammadu Buhari's remarks when he received the report of the Tripartite Committee on the Review of National Minimum Wage from the committee's chairman, Ama Pepple, on Tuesday.

A presidential source, who preferred not to be named, said the president did not endorse N30,000 as proposed by committee as being reported by some sections of the media.

He, however, stated that President Buhari had expressed his commitment to ensuring the implementation of a new National Minimum Wage.

"But the president's speech at the event was immediately made available to the media and nowhere indicated that the president endorsed N30,000 Minimum wage.

"It is not the duty of the president only to endorse a new national minimum wage. The process involves the Federal Executive Council (FEC), the National Economic Council (NEC) and the National Assembly.

"It is imperative for us to always avoid misinterpreting a written speech,'' he added.

At the submission of the report of the Tripartite Committee that negotiated a new minimum wage with labour and other stakeholders, President Buhari pledged that the Federal Government would soon transmit an Executive bill (on National Minimum Wage) to the National Assembly for its passage within the shortest possible time.

He said: "Our plan is to transmit the Executive bill to the National Assembly for its passage within the shortest possible time.

"I am fully committed to having a new National Minimum Wage Act in the very near future.''

Buhari also expressed delight that the committee had successfully completed its assignment in a peaceful and non-controversial manner.

"Let me use this opportunity to recognise the leadership of the organised labour and private sector as well as representatives of State and Federal Governments for all your hard work.

"The fact that we are here today, is a notable achievement.

"As the Executive Arm commences its review of your submission, we will continue to engage you all in closing any open areas presented in this report.

"I, therefore, would like to ask for your patience and understanding in the coming weeks."

The President, however, enjoined the leadership of the labour unions as well as the Nigerian workers to avoid being used as political weapons.

"May I therefore, employ workers and their leaders not to allow themselves to be used as political weapons,'' he said.

In her remarks, Pepple explained that the recommendation made by the committee was predicated on the high cost of living, occasioned by the exchange rate as well as the rising inflation rate in the country.

She said that the committee also considered micro-economic indicators including the revenue and expenditure profile of the government.

Pepple expressed the hope that the implementation of the recommended minimum wage would boost the purchasing power of the working class, increase consumption expenditure, and stimulate economic growth

Nigeria Resumes Exportation Of Hibiscus To Mexico

Posted: 07 Nov 2018 12:17 AM PST

Dr Vincent Isegbe

The Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Service (NAQS) said that Nigeria would resume the export of hibiscus, popularly known as Zobo, to Mexico.

Dr Vincent Isegbe, the Coordinating Director, NAQS, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Abuja.

He said that in 2017, Nigeria exported 1,983 containers of hibiscus to Mexico alone and earned $35 million within nine months of that year.

He added that NAQS had initially suspended the export following the detection of storage pest in some consignments from Nigeria.

"The issue has now been taken care of. That is why we are resuming the export of the plant again."

He noted that the issue was resolved in collaboration with stakeholders across the value chain, adding that Mexico is the largest importer of Nigerian hibiscus.

"Nigeria is ready to resume export of the plant to Mexico. In a couple of weeks, we will resume shipments.

"Our farmers are eager and the fields are near ready. The harvest season of hibiscus will start any moment from now.

"And the good news is that Nigeria has a vast growing belt, with harvest available all year round.

"We need to take advantage of this opportunity to earn foreign exchange for the country and support the present administration's diversification of the economy," he said.

Isegbe, however, called on farmers to show more commitment to growing the plant in order to increase their income. NAN
