Boko Haram: Nigerian Army Again, Issues Warning Over False Report On Attacks

Posted: 30 Nov 2018 05:09 PM PST

Brigadier General Sani Usman, Director Army Public Relations

The Nigerian Army has again cautioned against what it called deliberate and concerted efforts to mislead the public through inaccurate and false publication of casualty figures on the unfortunate attacks on some of its locations in the North East.

A statement from Sani Usman, Brigadier General, the Director Army Public Relations on Friday said the latest of this worrisome development was the attack on troops' location at Metele, Borno State.

He said some persons and media outlets had continued to circulate various wrong accounts and inaccurate casualty figures of troops without efforts to verify from the military, Daily Post reports.

He said, "This is coming at the heels of our release of 28th November 2018 in which we gave accurate details of the attacks and casualty figures in a bid to set the records straight and inform the public true account of things.

"We also promised to continuously carry the public along through accurate and timely information dissemination on operations and other activities of the Nigerian Army in the release.

"However, it was observed that the trend continued unabated. Most of these inaccurate, false reports and fake news were aimed at denigrating the leadership of the Nigerian Army.

"Regrettably, the rate at which some mischievous persons ignorantly attack the Armed Forces of Nigeria, especially the Nigerian Army is very alarming and unfortunate.

"This is deliberate attempt to demoralise the Nigerian Army which would have devastating consequences on troops' will to discharge their constitutional duties especially in the fight against terrorism and insurgency, thus affecting national security.

"We would like to warn all those mischief makers to keep the Nigerian Army out of their politics and mischief.

"Journalists and media platforms should be professional and accurate in their reportage.

"The achievements of the Nigerian Army within the last three years are glaringly obvious, therefore, whatever recent temporary setbacks we experienced in the course of the fight against terrorism and insurgency should not be the yardstick for condemning these laudable three and half years' accomplishments.

"We have however identified the few unpatriotic harbingers of the fake news on the attack at Metele and would take appropriate legal actions against them.

"This is to ensure that the Nigerian Army is insulated from propaganda and ulterior motives of destabilising the country.

"The Nigerian Army is quite aware that the perpetrators through these acts are covertly supporting terrorists and their activities in Nigeria with a long term objective. We are also aware that they want to use insecurity to scuttle and subvert the democratic process in the country.

"Consequently, we would like to state unequivocally that no amount of mischief or pressure would circumvent the journey to a peaceful, free and fair general elections in Nigeria."

"We, therefore, need the continued support, encouragement and understanding of well meaning Nigerians as we deal decisively with the remnants of the Boko Haram terrorists hibernating at the fringes of our borders with contiguous countries of Cameroon, Chad and Niger Republic.

"We are committed to the defence of the territorial integrity of Nigeria. We hasten to state that we will continue to be professional in our assigned roles and remain apolitical at all times.

"Once more we warn mischief makers and proponents of misinformation and fake news to desist from the such practice and join other well meaning, law abiding Nigerians to support our Army to countering terrorism and insurgency in the country," the statement added.

Samsung's Foldable Screen Technology Has Been Stolen And Sold To China

Samsung's latest bendable screen technology has been stolen and sold to two Chinese companies, according to prosecutors in South Korea.

The Suwon District Prosecutor's Office charged 11 people on Thursday with stealing tech secrets from Samsung (SSNLF), the office said in a statement.

The prosecutors allege that a Samsung supplier leaked blueprints of Samsung's "flexible OLED edge panel 3D lamination" to a company that it had set up. That company then sold the tech secrets to the Chinese firms for nearly $14 million, according to the prosecutors.

They did not name the people or companies involved in the theft.

Samsung Display, a subsidiary of the South Korean conglomerate, said in a statement Friday that it was "surprised and appalled at the results of the investigation by prosecutors."

The findings come at a time of intensifying competition for new tech among rivals.

Prosecutors said Samsung invested six years and some 150 billion won ($130 million) to develop the bendable screen.

As demand for high-end smartphones begins to wane in key markets, companies have been searching for the next big thing to convince consumers to upgrade their devices.

Samsung's bendable screen had been hyped as a potential game changer. The company teased the tech at a conference earlier this month, showing images of a new folding smartphone.

Samsung is the world's largest smartphone maker, accounting for about 20% of global market share last quarter, according to research firm Canalys.

Investigators have not been able to track down and question two Chinese individuals believed to be involved in the case, and have asked Interpol to help find and detain them. Of the 11 people indicted, three have been detained.

A trial date has not yet been set.

EFCC Recovers Over 116 Cars; 20 Houses And Huge Sum Of Money From Nigerian Businessman, Hands Over Same To First Bank

Posted: 30 Nov 2018 10:48 AM PST

EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Wednesday,  November 28, 2018,  handed over 116 (One Hundred and Sixteen) cars and 20 (Twenty) landed properties in Edo, Rivers and Lagos States recovered from one Michael Obasuyi Osasogie to First Bank Plc.

Trouble began for Osasogie after a petition he wrote to the Commission against E-tranzact in March 2018.

The Commission had, however, investigated Osasogie's business interests, following receipt of a counter-petition written by e-tranzact against Osasogie and one of his companies, SmartMicro.

SmartMicro was said to have approached e-tranzact in 2012 for the deployment of bulk purchase solution called "Corporatepay" to facilitate payment of salaries of Delta State employees in microfinance banks.

It was also alleged that e-tranzact configured an additional outbound fund transfer solution called "Fundgate" in 2017, which required SmartMicro to maintain a pre-funded settlement account with First Bank Plc for settlement of account it had initiated.

However, e-tranzact had further alleged that the bank, sometime in March 2018, revealed that the settlement account was in debit of N11, 498,944,038.29.

Obasuyi, in his statement to the Commission, confessed to have committed the crime, stating that he created fraudulent and imaginary monies through the aid of Fundgate Financial Application from the company.

Consequently, Osasogie was arraigned alongside his firms-Platinum Multi-Purpose Co-operative Society, SmartMicro Systems Limited and Platinum Smart Cruise Motors Limited on May 24, 2018 before Justice Mojisola Dada of the  Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja on a 14-count charge bordering on stealing to the tune of N11, 498, 944, 038.29 (Eleven Billion Four Hundred and Ninety Eight Million, Nine Hundred and Ninety Four Thousand and Thirty Three naira twenty Nine Kobo).

One of the counts reads: "That you, Michael Obasuyi Osasogie, Platinum Multi-Purpose Co-operative Society, SmartMicro Systems Limited and Platinum Smart Cruise Motors Limited, sometime in the year 2016 in Lagos within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, conspired to commit felony, to wit: stealing of the sum of N11, 498, 944, 038.29 (Eleven Billion, Four Hundred and Ninety Eight Million, Nine Hundred and Forty Four Thousand, Thirty Eight Naira, Twenty Nine Kobo) property of First Bank Nigeria Ltd."

He pleaded guilty to the charge preferred against.

During his trial, an investigator with the EFCC, Orji Chukwuma, had told the court how the proceeds of crime were housed in some new generation banks.

Led in evidence by the prosecution counsel, Rotimi Oyedepo, Chukwuma had told the court that "SmartMicro Systems Limited assumed a position of a fictitious microfinance bank in Nigeria through a software, Micro switch Server 1.1 created by the defendant as well as two genuine microfinance banks, which he used to carry out his fraud.

"The defendant later opened an account with First Bank Plc and subsequently raised an overdraft from his fictitious microfinance bank for his account in the bank, which it ignorantly paid."

In his further testimony, the witness had told the court that when e-tranzact disconnected from the chain, all the transactions carried out by the defendant collapsed on his own account with First Bank, thereby leading to the discovery of the fraud.

The sums of N2, 903,727,563.92, $37, 992.87 and €18,538.09 were recovered by the Commission from Osasogie's  accounts in various banks in the country.

The Commission also recovered 116 cars and 20 properties located in Lagos, Abuja, Benin and Port Harcourt.

The prosecution counsel had, therefore, urged the court to convict the defendant on counts one to 14, according to the law.

The defendant later entered into plea bargain. The prosecution counsel therefore urged the court to consider the plea bargain entered into by the defendant on May 21, 2018 as judgment in his sentencing.

Counsel to the first and second defendant, Osasu Ogebor, had told the court that his clients went into a plea bargain in order to give out what does not belong to him.

"It is not enough for the accused person to say I am sorry for what he has done. But from his inner heart, he is absolutely sorry, my Lord", Ogebor had pleaded.

Counsels to the third and fourth defendants also aligned themselves with Ogebor's prayers.

Delivering her judgement, Justice Dada convicted the defendant on all the counts and sentenced him to one-year imprisonment.

The Judge also ordered the forfeiture of defendant's 116 buses, 20 properties and monies in various accounts to First Bank Plc.

At the hand- over ceremony, which held in one of the forfeited houses at Osapa London, Lekki-Lagos, Kaina Garba, Head Asset Forfeiture and Recovery Management Unit of the EFCC , Lagos office,  handed over  the documents and keys to the properties to Gabriel Edobor, Head, Remedial and Classified Assets Management Department, First Bank Plc and Eme Godwin, Group Head, Legal Unit, E-transact.

In a show of appreciation, both Edobor and Godwin thanked the EFCC for ensuring the recovery of the properties through diligent and uncompromising investigative efforts.

I Don’t Know If The Man In Aso Villa Is Buhari Or Jubril – Atiku

Posted: 30 Nov 2018 08:46 AM PST

Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and President Muhammadu Buhari

The Peoples Democratic Party, Presidential Candidate for the 2019 election, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has told the presidency and the Federal Government to leave him alone and focus their attention on addressing the concerns over the identity of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Speaking with Daily Independent, Atiku, who spoke through Segun Sowunmi, spokesman of his campaign organisation, said the nations of the world are at liberty to give or refuse visas to anyone they deem fit and do not need the Federal Government's opinion on the issue.

"The countries of the world are free and are at liberty to give visa or not to. We are advising them that they should go and concern themselves with the allegations of duplicity and multiple personality sitting in Aso Villa. If they can resolve that, then they can come and start talking to us about any other thing".

"Nigeria is a country that God gave to Nigerians to be ruled by Nigerians when we decide our presidency. There is no part of Nigerian conversation that says that Nigerian president must go and tour round all the countries of the world and bow down to them so that they can come back and lead us here.

"They should settle the issue of duplicity of the personality in Aso Rock first. I don't know if his name is Jubril and I don't know if his name is Buhari. They are hearing the allegations yet they have not done anything about it, all they keep focusing on is Atiku.

"When people said Obasanjo was dead, he came out and said 'I dey Kampe'. When President Umaru Yar'Adua was rumoured to be dead, Obasanjo called him and placed it on loudspeaker and said 'Umoru, Umoru are you dead?

"But now, they have been accusing them of putting a strange man in the presidency, why haven't they come out to say 'No, this is who we have'. They are making all sorts of stupid excuses and diverting from the issues", he said.

2019 Election: Defections Hit APC, Just Three Days To Deadline For Submission Of Candidates’ Names

Posted: 30 Nov 2018 03:24 AM PST

Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, National Chairman, APC

The post-primary crises in the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC,  worsened on Thursday as more defections hit the party.

The defections occurred three days to the deadline given to political parties by the Independent National Electoral Commission for substitution of candidates.

It was gathered that the party, which ended its governorship primaries on  October 5,  had been striving to solve some of the crises before the December 2 deadline for the substitution of governorship and houses of assembly candidates.

The plan of the party, it was learnt, was to accommodate the interests of members, who were aggrieved by its primaries.

But developments on Thursday, indicated that the efforts of the APC were not yielding fruits as more members defected and the Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, said the crisis in the state was irredeemable.

States affected by latest defections are Ogun, Kogi, Kebbi and Imo.

In the House of Representatives, the Speaker, Yakubu Dogara, read defection letters of three APC lawmakers, including  Messrs Abdulkabir Akinlade (Ogun State), Mohammed Ajalah (Kogi State), and Salisu Koko (Kebbi State).

Ajalah defected from the APC to the PDP, while Koko moved from the APC to the SDP. Akinlade, who is the governorship candidate of the APC faction in Ogun State led by Governor Ibikunle Amosun, defected from the APC to the Allied People's Movement.

The National Working Committee of the APC had affirmed Mr Dapo Abiodun, as the authentic governorship candidate of the APC in Ogun State, an action Amosun kicked against.

Four members of the House of Representatives had last week dumped the APC for various parties. They included Mukaila Kazzim representing Abeokuta North/Obafemi-Owode/Odeda in Ogun State, who is believed to be loyal to Amosun.

All the lawmakers blamed their defections on the APC's handling of its primaries and selection of candidates for the 2019 general elections.

Four  Ogun APC lawmakers join APM

Besides Akinlade, some of the loyalists of the governor that dumped the APC on Thursday  for the APM  included the Majority Leader of the state House of  Assembly, Yinka Mafe (Sagamu Constituency 1); the Chief Whip, Idowu Olowofuja (Abeokuta South 2);  Tunde Sanusi (Obafemi-Owode); and Ganiyu Oyedeji  (Ifo 2  Constituency).

The Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Suraj Adekunbi (APC-Yewa North 1), read the defection letters of the members during plenary in Abeokuta on Thursday.

The lawmakers in their separate letters attributed their defections to the injustice during the primary elections of the APC. They accused the APC NWC of injustice, saying there was a need to join a new platform.

The lawmakers noted that they took the decision after due consultation with their constituents and their supporters.

Oyedeji stated that despite his defection,  he was loyal to President Muhammadu Buhari's re-election bid , adding that he would continue to support Amosun. In his response, the speaker wished them well in their new party.

The Deputy Speaker, Olakunle Oluomo (APC-Ifo1), cited Order 10 of the House rule, which stated that the ruling party must present the majority leader. He stated that the APC still had 13 members and deserved the right to produce the majority leader.

He added that the majority leader should resign from the office after his defection. The Speaker, however, stated that the issue would be ironed out at the caucus level.

Meanwhile, a  member of the state executive of the APC, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said  Ogun State chapter of the APC remained an indivisible entity.

He said the executive would not join Akinlade and the 26 state House of Assembly candidates in moving to the APM.

He stated, "We are not going to the APM. All the executive members of the APC in Ogun State still remain in the party.

"Those who joined the new party left the APC because of injustice meted out to them. They are not happy with the decision of the National Working Committee following the imposition of Prince Dapo Abiodun as the governorship candidate.

"So, their defection to the APM can't and will not shrink the strength of the APC, even preparatory to the upcoming 2019 elections."

He added,  "Though the executive members of the party in the state are not happy with the decision of the NWC to impose Dapo Abiodun on us, one thing I want you to know is that Abiodun himself hasn't reached out to us for our support. Once he does that, we will give him our unalloyed support."

Akinlade, others' exit won't affect Abiodun – Campaign organisation

When contacted for comments, the Director-General of Dapo Abiodun Campaign Organisation, Prince Segun Adesegun,  said he was in a meeting .

Adesegun, however, sent a text message, saying the defection would not affect the ambition of Abiodun.

The message sent to The PUNCH  reads, "Their defection won't affect us. The general public will decide who will be their next governor and not a single individual or a handful of individuals.

"Dapo Abiodun is loved by all. He's a popular candidate that is seen by the public as someone who is competent and capable.

"He is driven by his passion to serve the good people of Ogun and his singular agenda is prosperity for all, irrespective of tribe. He remains the best among other candidates."

Imo APC crisis irreconcilable – Okorocha

In Imo, Okorocha on Thursday, told the Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje,  and Senator Godswill Akpabio that the crisis rocking the APC  in the state was irreconcilable.

Okorocha, who spoke in Owerri when the APC reconciliation committee headed by Ganduje visited Imo State, said, "Adams Oshiomhole single-handedly meted out grave injustice to the Imo APC members."

The Imo governor alleged that despite making Oshiomhole the national chairman of the APC, he "stole the mandate of Imo people."

Okorocha said no state had suffered the kind of injustice Oshiomhole allegedly meted out to the Imo APC members.

He said that despite the provocation, he would remain in the APC and ensure the electoral victory of  Buhari.

He stated, "There shouldn't have been a crisis in the party because of the affinity of the members; we are like one big family. When we came in 2011,  it was a miracle. We moved from APGA to the APC because of the name of President Muhammadu Buhari which is synonymous with integrity. I am a foundation member of the APC. I suggested the name APC.

"When we started,  we were called names, we were made to look like aliens in our state; this is the only state you have elected office holders that are of the APC extraction. Those Oshiomhole gave the tickets were not APC members, the worst political injustice in the history of Nigeria happened in Imo."

"The only reason these people are here is because of Buhari,  not because they have benefitted. The issue we have is with Adams Oshiomhole.  He stole the mandate of the people and gave it away for reasons best known to him. The people here are concerned because the name of the person on APC ticket is not the candidate of their choice."

He added, "Let me make bold to say that this is not about the people here but across the length and breadth of the state.  All the speculations that I am leaving APC are not true. The state and local government executives are intact. We have done everything to resolve the issue but it appears to have gone beyond repair. The situation at hand has gone beyond what we can manage."

Ganduje said that the first task of the committee had been achieved as it had got the assurances of Okorocha that he would remain in the party and would work for the re-election of  Buhari in 2019.

The APC governorship candidate,  Senator Hope Uzodinma, and Uche Nwosu, who Okorocha was backing, stayed away from the peace parley which had many party members in attendance.

Although he had not announced it, it was gathered that Nwosu and members of the Imo State House of Assembly had  left the APC for the DPP.

When contacted, the APC Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Yekini Nabena, said the party would await the report of the Peace and Reconciliation Committee before taking any decision.

While expressing surprise about the defection, he said the party would work to ensure the development would not cause any tension among members.

"It is still early to comment about that. The party would wait for the report of the Peace and Reconciliation Committee before taking any decision. But we believe the matter can still be resolved as one family."

Federal Government Reveals Current Location Of Jubril

Posted: 30 Nov 2018 02:13 AM PST

Alhaji Lai Mohammed

The Federal Government has reacted to those claiming that President Muhammadu Buhari was cloned. It described such talk as idiotic and that such people peddling the rumour were not worthy of getting government reaction.

Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said these in an interview with journalists in Abuja on Thursday.

His response followed questions that the Federal Government should clear the air on the allegation.

Recall that there were insinuations that the President was cloned and that the man who is presiding over the affairs of the country is one Jibrin from either Sudan or Chad.

The rumour followed the miraculous recovery of the President when he was sick about two years ago.
Mohammed said, "It is idiotic to say the President is cloned. I don' t see any serious government responding to that.

"So, the same Jibrin that was cloned from Sudan or Chad is in Chad now ? Isn't that stupid ?

"They even said he is from Chad. Yet, the same President is in Chad as we speak . The same Jibrin is remembering what the President did while in Petroleum Trust Fund and he is also remembering what he did when he was head of state between 1983 and 1985.

" All the ministers do not know who is before them when they attend the Federal Executive Council meeting ? The President remembers memos he had seen or heard about in 1985 and we say he is cloned.

" So, Jibril from Chad or Sudan will now remember all of these ? It is too silly for the government to respond to this. It must be ignored"
