US Visa: APC Govt In Panic As Atiku Gets Visa – Saraki

Posted: 01 Dec 2018 05:16 PM PST

Dr. Bukola Saraki, Nigeria's Senate President

Dr. Bukola Saraki, the Director General of the main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential Campaign Council and President of the Senate, yesterday berated the All Progressives Congress (APC) over call to the United States (US) not to grant Atiku Abubakar a visa.

Speaking during the first interactive session with the media, Saraki said that call by the APC was a panic action by the ruling government.

He said: "Let me go to the question of visa that was raised. I think it was a panic action by government. How does granting somebody visa mean an endorsement? it's more like a panic action because government is panicking."

"That is a panic reaction of a government that is scared and is worried that it is about to lose election."

He pointed out that the ruling government is trying to see how they can make a point out of it.

Saraki said that PDP will not descend low like the ruling party, adding that they will ensure that all their campaigns are centered on issues, adding, "we are more focused and what we believe in is how the average Nigerian's life is going to be better, who is going to make that better, who is going to make the economy, who is going to make the country more secured, who is going to make the country more united?"

Saraki further said that Nigerians will vote for the person that is ready to unite the people, provide security, fix the economy and ensure that the country runs efficiently, adding that the only person with such quality is Atiku.

Taking a swipe at the APC Trader moni scheme spearheaded by the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, the president of the Senate described it as a sophisticated vote buying.

He noted that the programme suddenly came up because the nation is heading to election, adding that in 2015, 2016 and 2017, such was never heard in the APC government.

"In 2015, I didn't see the Vice President going anywhere to give anybody Trader Moni. In 2016, I didn't see the Vice President going anywhere to give anybody Trader Moni. In 2017, I didn't see the Vice President going anywhere to give anybody Trader Moni. But all of a sudden in 2018.

"And the worst part about it is that he goes with the Woman Leader of his party (APC), governors of his party. At least if you are going and it's Nigerian money, you should have Woman Leader of all the parties because the money belongs to Nigeria. But all I see is APC women leaders. It is wrong, it is morally wrong.

"It equates in a way to sophisticated vote buying, because if it is not vote buying, you should have been doing it since 2015. In 2016, you didn't go. In 2017, you didn't go. Then all of a sudden in 2018, that is the biggest programme.

"And when you go, you carry APC governors beside you, Woman Leader of APC beside you, collecting PVCs. Nigerians are not going to be fooled by that. Anything that is not based on sincerity."

JUST IN: Atiku Abubakar Finally Secures US Visa, Jets Out Of Nigeria

Posted: 01 Dec 2018 12:31 PM PST

Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), presidential candidate

Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has finally been issued a visa to the United States, TheCable can report.

A family source disclosed this to TheCable on Saturday and confirmed that the former vice-president has left Nigeria for the UK, where he will spend some time before flying to the US.

TheCable also understands that former president Olusegun Obasanjo played a "critical" role in getting the American government to issue the visa to his former deputy with whom he was estranged for almost 15 years.

The trip marks another chapter in the controversy that has rocked the former vice-president for over a decade.

Atiku, who is widely travelled, has not been to the US in 13 years, initially fuelling speculations that he might be avoiding possible arrest or prosecution.

His political opponents had used his absence from the US not just to taunt but to discredit him.

His row with the US authorities began after the FBI investigated a bribery scandal involving William Jefferson, former US congressman, in 2004.

Atiku was accused of demanding a bribe of $500,000 to facilitate the award of contracts to two American telecommunication firms in Nigeria.

The FBI had searched his residence in the posh neighbourhood of Potomac, Maryland, but no money was found.

The investigators had videotaped Jefferson, who was the congressman representing Louisiana, receiving $100,000 worth of $100 bills which he claimed was meant for Atiku, but the former vice-president has consistently denied the allegation.

Despite Atiku's claim to innocence, the controversy raged.

Two months before he declared interest in the 2019 presidential race, Atiku granted an interview to Dele Mommodu, celebrity journalist, where he clarified his absence from the US.

"It is the sole prerogative of America to determine who they want in their country or not," he said.

"I'm not running away from America. I applied but wasn't issued a visa."

He said the US did not categorically deny him visa.

"They've only said my application is going through administrative process," he said.

On Thursday, Lai Mohammed, minister of information, had warned the US to be cautious in granting visa to the main opponent of President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019.

Asked to comment on Atiku's visa status on Friday, Rusell Brooks, spokesman of the US consulate in Lagos, had said issuance of visa to Nigerians irrespective of their status is strictly a confidential matter.

He said the US government would not discuss such confidentiality in public.

Some All Progressives Congress (APC) members had alleged that Brian Ballard, publicist of US President Donald Trump, was working towards relaxing the visa ban on Atiku.

See What Hackers Got In Marriott Data Breach Which Hit 500 Million Guests

Posted: 01 Dec 2018 06:45 AM PST

Marriott

Marriott has disclosed a massive data breach for about 500 million guests who booked reservations at its Starwood properties. The number of people involved in the hacked reservation database makes it one of the largest ever cyberattacks on a company.

The hotel giant said in a statement that it discovered "unauthorized access" to the database dating back to 2014. The hacker had copied and encrypted information and "took steps toward removing it," Marriott said.

The hack impacts up to 500 million guests who made reservations at a Starwood hotel, which includes Sheraton and Westin hotels. For about 327 million of that number, the compromised information includes data such as names, mailing addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, passport numbers, Starwood Preferred Guest account information, date of birth, gender, arrival and departure information, reservation date and communication preferences.

"This is one of the most significant data breaches in history given the size — about 500 million people are affected — and the sensitivity of the personal information that was stolen," said CreditCards.com industry analyst Ted Rossman.

In some cases, payment card numbers and expiration dates were also taken, but Marriott said it's unclear whether the hackers have information to decrypt the payment card numbers.

Some security experts said the breadth of the data involved presents problems for consumers, especially with loss of sensitive data such as passport information.

"Its impact on the victims is much greater than the numbers reveal," said John Gunn, chief marketing officer of cybersecurity company OneSpan. "It is remarkably easy to request a replacement credit card from your financial institution and you are not responsible for fraudulent activities – try that with your passport."

The New York Attorney General's office said in a tweet that it has opened an investigation into the breach. "New Yorkers deserve to know that their personal information will be protected," the office said. Other state attorneys general also said they planned to investigate, including Maryland and Pennsylvania.

Marriott shares fell $6.50, or more than 5 percent, to $115.34 in early trading on Friday.

Calls for new laws
The breach prompted some lawmakers and security experts to call for new laws to strengthen consumer protections and privacy standards.

"Rather than accepting this trend as the new normal, this latest incident should strengthen Congress's resolve," Sen. Mark Warner, D-Virginia, tweeted. "And it is past time we enact data security laws that ensure companies account for security costs rather than making their consumers shoulder the burden and harms resulting from these lapses."

Marriott's response
Marriott has set up a website for consumers affected by the hack, at info.starwoodhotels.com, and a call center. "Call volume may be high, and we appreciate your patience," the company said.

Marriott also said it is providing free enrollment in WebWatcher, a company that monitors internet sites where personal information is shared, to alert consumers if their data is found there. (U.S. customers can click here to enroll in the service.)

Are you affected by the breach?
Anyone who made a reservation on or before September 10, 2018, at a Starwood property could be affected, Marriott said. The company said Marriott properties use a separate reservation system and that its investigation found only the Starwood network was breached.

Which hotels are Starwood properties?
Starwood properties include:

W Hotels
St. Regis
Sheraton Hotels & Resorts
Westin Hotels & Resorts
Element Hotels
Aloft Hotels
The Luxury Collection
Tribute Portfolio
Le Méridien Hotels & Resorts
Four Points by Sheraton
It also affects all the Design Hotels that participate in the Starwood Preferred Guest program. Starwood branded timeshare properties are also included.

Marriott: Beware of "phishing"
The hotel chain said it will send emails to guests whose data may have been stolen, but warned consumers that fraudsters may send so-called phishing emails that look as if they were sent by Marriott and try to elicit information. The official email will come from starwoodhotels@email-marriott.com, the company said.

Experts: What steps to take
Fraudsters could open fake accounts in consumers' names using the information held by the Starwood database, Rossman of CreditCards.com said.

"To guard against criminals opening fraudulent accounts, I recommend freezing your credit," he said. "It will prevent crooks from opening new credit in your name and can be accomplished for free in just a few minutes by contacting Experian, Equifax and TransUnion."

2019 PRESIDENCY: Wike Allegedly Resigns As Atiku’s Zonal Campaign Coordinator

Posted: 01 Dec 2018 06:04 AM PST

Governor Nyesom Wike

Governor Nyesom Wike, the Rivers State Governor, has reportedly resigned his appointment as the South-South zonal coordinator of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential campaign council.

Saturday Sun reports that Wike's letter of resignation as Atiku Abubakar's campaign coordinator for the South-South was ready and would be submitted today.

It is understood that Wike is not comfortable with the way things are going in the campaign, especially lack of consultations of appropriate party leaders before vital decisions and appointments are made.

The PDP had in October named Senate President, Bukola Saraki, as Director-General of the Atiku Presidential Campaign Council, along with prominent leaders of the party as zonal coordinators.

Announcing their appointment, the party's national chairman, Uche Secondus, had said, "After due consultation with party stakeholders, PDP, under my leadership has approved the following as members of Atiku Presidential Campaign Council."

Apart from the Senate President, Ayo Fayose, Aminu Tambuwal, Ibrahim Dankwambo, Samuel Ortom, Nyesom Wike and Dave Umahi were named as zonal coordinators.

While Governor Aminu Tambuwal was named as the Zonal Coordinator for NorthWest, Governor Ibrahim Dankwambo was appointed Zonal Coordinator for North-East, Governor Samuel Ortom for North-Central, Governor Dave Umahi for South-East, Nyesom Wike for South-South and former Governor Ayodele Fayose as Zonal Coordinator for the SouthWest.

Powerful Earthquake Rattles Alaska Causing Widespread Damage To Highways And Buildings(VIDEO)

Posted: 01 Dec 2018 04:35 AM PST

Alaska Earthquake        Credit - Twitter image

A magnitude 7.0 earthquake, followed by numerous aftershocks, rattled Alaska Friday morning, causing widespread damage to highways and buildings. The quake was centered just seven miles northwest of downtown Anchorage, the state's largest city, and was followed by numerous aftershocks.

Gasps of "oh my god!" could be heard as the earthquake rocked buildings, including a courthouse in Anchorage, and seemed to go on and on. People dove for cover as ceiling tiles fell from above and desks shook inside a courtroom.

Students dove under desks. Food flew off store shelves and windows were shattered. There were no immediate reports of any deaths or serious injuries, but the earthquake but did cause extensive infrastructure damage, including a highway that collapsed near Wasilla.

Roads collapsed all around Anchorage, including an exit ramp near the International Airport. A lone car was left on an island of asphalt. The airport was closed after traffic controllers warned planes trying to land to abort.

CBS affiliate KTVA was knocked off the air and its newsroom largely destroyed. Computers, lights and cameras were tossed around like toys. But the staff kept reporting — via social media.

Kirk Kullberg said his house was a mess after the earthquake. "The dresser came down in the kid's room," Kullberg said. "Definitely thankful that everyone is OK."

The shaking could be felt 350 miles away. Officials briefly issued a tsunami warning for coastal areas of southern Alaska. The governor has asked for a disaster declaration.

While damage assessments are underway, seismologist Lucy Jones said Alaskans can expected to be impacted for awhile.

"Having another magnitude 5 won't surprise any seismologist but we usually get the public going 'wait a minute, this was supposed to be over,'" Jones said. "So expect that there could be a magnitude 5 a year or two from now."

Jones said that future quake would be associated with Friday's earthquake.
