Open Positions with the Economic Analysis Group in the Antitrust Division of the U.S. Department of Justice

The Economic Analysis Group in the Antitrust Division of the U.S. Department of Justice is soliciting applications for full-time economic research analyst and an unpaid summer economics internship, positions in Washington, DC starting in the Spring/Summer 2019.

The Economic Analysis Group is looking for detail-oriented highly motivated individuals interested in economics.

A bachelor's degree with a grade point average of 3.0 or better is required, and you must be a U.S. citizen. Experience in working with spreadsheets, statistics, computer programming, and econometrics is useful. Course work in statistics, econometrics, calculus, computer science, and linear algebra is also useful.

Unpaid Summer Economics Internships with the ANTITRUST DIVISION

The Economic Analysis Group in the Antitrust Division of the U.S. Department of Justice has openings for two unpaid undergraduate and one unpaid graduate summer interns. The Economic Analysis Group consists of approximately 50 Ph.D. economists who provide economic analysis for antitrust cases brought by the Division. The primary focus of our work is applied microeconomics, with an emphasis on competitive interactions between firms in specific markets. Interns will work closely with staff economists to define relevant product and geographic markets, determine pricing patterns, find trends in large datasets, perform statistical analysis of firm behavior within markets, and provide exhibits (such as data, charts, and graphs) that may be required for litigation.

The Economic Analysis Group is looking for detail-oriented, highly motivated individuals with an interest in microeconomics and who have completed a course in econometrics or a similar discipline. In addition to coursework in economics, experience working with statistics, spreadsheets, computer databases, or other types of computer programming is required.

This position qualifies for a Civil Service rating of GS-7 (annual pay $45,972 in 2018). A bachelor's degree with a grade point average of 3.0 or better is required, and you must be a U.S. citizen. Experience in working with spreadsheets, statistics, computer programming, and econometrics is useful. Course work in statistics, econometrics, calculus, computer science, and linear algebra is also useful. Students graduating by May 2019 are invited to apply.

Our services include restructuring-related valuation and economic analyses, in controversy, compliance, and planning settings. We act as expert witnesses. We negotiate audit settlements and advance pricing agreements between governments and taxpayers. We price, document, and defend our clients' most sensitive intercompany transactions. Job Description
Our interns work on a variety of assignments including but not limited to:

  • Research, analytical work, valuation, benchmarking analysis, and/or documenting the arm's
  • length nature of intercompany transactions within multinational's global value chain;
  • Performing in-depth company, industry, and market research;
  • Perform financial and statistical analysis for clients (e.g., Fortune 100 companies and top ranked law firms); and
  • Performing economic analyses of intercompany transactions by using valuation methods.

The environment at EP is very collegial – as such, Interns will be given the opportunity to interact
organically with associates, managers, directors, and partners.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • COVER LETTER REQUIRED, applicants without cover letters fulfilling the following requirements will not be considered: 1) maximum of 250 words; 2) outline interest in economics accounting, finance and/or valuations; and 3) outline why you want to intern for a boutique economic consulting firm.
  • Ideal candidates will be pursuing a degree in Economics, Finance, Accounting, or Statistics.
  • Strong quantitative and writing capabilities.
  • Excellent Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel skills.
  • Analytical mind and ability to handle multiple projects at a time.
  • 3.0 or above GPA required

2019 AEI Summer Honors Program

The American Enterprise Institute's Summer Honors Program is a series of educational and professional development opportunities for top undergraduate students. Participants connect with the ideas, research, and network of AEI—one of America's leading think tanks—through discussion-based seminars led by AEI scholars and other experts, policy briefings with distinguished policy thinkers and practitioners, high-level networking events, and site visits throughout Washington.

Eligibility: Current undergraduates and recent graduates (winter 2018 or later). International students are eligible to apply. Applications from previous Summer Honors Program alumni will not be considered.

Location:
Washington, DC

Duration: Most students will participate in a single one-week course at the beginning of Summer 2019. A select group of students will participate in a four-week opportunity, called the Summer Honors Academy.

Stipend: This is a fully-funded program. Housing, meals on class days, stipends and travel vouchers are provided.

Final Deadline: March 11, 2019. Letters of Recommendation will be accepted until March 18, 2019.
