APC vs PDP: Why Buhari govt decided to arraign CJN Onnoghen on criminal charges – Secondus

Posted: 12 Jan 2019 04:15 PM PST

 Prince Uche Secondus
Prince Uche Secondus, the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has told Nigerians and the International community that the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, wants to "destroy" the Nigerian judiciary ahead the 2019 general elections.

He said the plan by the federal government to arraign the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen on criminal charges on Monday was to intimate the judiciary.

Secondus, who led the PDP Presidential campaign train to Jos, Plateau state on Saturday, told a crowd of the party supporters at the Jos Polo ground that APC is afraid of an independent judiciary because of their agenda to rig the election.

The National Chairman said that Nigerians are ready and determined to throw the APC away and no amount of threats and harassment will deter the people from effecting the inevitable change.

"They want to kill Senator Dino, they want to kill the Senate President, they want to kill every body but they will fail because God is with Nigerians," he said.

In a statement from his media office signed by Ike Abonyi, the National Chairman warned INEC and security agencies, "let me warn, you cannot rig this election, the will of the of the people must prevail whether you like it or not, that is democracy."

He assured the people of Plateau that they should vote for PDP candidates in all the elections for lasting peace to come to Plateau because the PDP governorship candidate, Senator Jerry Useni and Presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar have what it takes to provide enduring peace in the state.

"Atiku Presidency will not sleep until it provides jobs for the teeming youths of Nigeria and ensure harmonious living among the people", Secondus added.

CJN Onnoghen: How Buhari Govt Filed Criminal Charges Within Four Days (See petition details)

Posted: 12 Jan 2019 04:04 PM PST

Justice Walter Samuel Nkanu Onnoghen
The process that led to planned arraignment of the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Justice Walter Samuel Nkanu Onnoghen was concluded within four days, DAILY POST reports authoritatively.

At the weekend, information emerged that the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government has ordered the CJN to immediately vacate his office.

The government is said to, on Monday January 14, 2019, arraign him before the Justice Danladi Yakubu led-Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) in Abuja, on charges of failure to declare his assets as required by law and for operating Bank Domiciliary Foreign Currency Accounts.

On Saturday, our correspondent exclusively learnt of the timelines of the legal action against Onnoghen.

On Monday January 7, a petition was written by the Anti-Corruption and Research Based Data Initiative (ARDI);

On Tuesday January 8, the petition was submitted to the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB);

On Wednesday January 9, the petition was stamped "received" by the office of the CCB chairman;

On Thursday January 10, charges against CJN Onnoghen were filed by the CCB;

On Friday January 11, the CJN was served at his official residence in Abuja.

Details of the petition, ARDI petitioned the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB), listed a number of allegations, false declaration of assets, against Onnoghen.

The group said its petition, dated January 7, 2019, became necessary "bearing in mind the imminence of the 2019 General Elections and the overwhelming roles of the Judicial Arm both before and after".

ARDI said Onnoghen "is the owner of sundry accounts primarily funded through cash deposits made by himself up to as recently as 10th August 2016 which appear to have been run in a manner inconsistent with financial transparency and the code of conduct for public officials".

In the petition seen by TheCable, the group said Onnoghen made five different cash deposits of $10,000 each on March 8, 2011, into Standard Chartered Bank Account 1062650; two separate cash deposits of $5000 each followed by four cash deposits of $10,000 each on June 7, 2011; another set of five separate cash deposits of $10,000 each on June 27, 2011, and four more cash deposits of $10,000 each the following day.

They said Onnoghen did not declare his assets immediately after taking office, contrary to section 15 (1) of Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act; and that he did not comply with the constitutional requirement for public servants to declare their assets every four years during their career.

Also alleged against him is that his Code of Conduct Bureau Forms (Form CCB 1) for 2014 and 2016 were dated and filed on the same day and the acknowledgement slips were issued for both on December 14, 2016 — at which point, they said, Onnoghen had become the CJN. Onnoghen assumed office as CJN on March 6, 2017.

ARDI alleged that prior to 2016, Onnoghen appeared "to have suppressed or otherwise concealed the existence of these multiple domiciliary accounts owned by him, as well as the substantial cash balances in them".

Account balances were listed as follows: The Standard Chartered Bank dollar account 1062650 with a balance of $391,401.28 on January 31, 2011;

The Standard Chartered Bank Euro account 5001062686 with a balance of EURO 49,971 .71 on January 31, 2011;

The Standard Chartered Bank pound sterling account 5001062679 with a balance of GBP23,409.66 on February 28, 2011;

"It is curious that these domiciliary accounts were not declared in one of the two CCB Forms filed by Justice Onnoghen on the same day, 14th December 2016," the group said.

The Federal Government among others is accusing Nigeria's Head of the Judiciary of refusal to declare his assets in breach of the provision of the Code of Conduct Bureau Act.

He is also being accused of maintaining Domiciliary foreign currencies account which comprised Dollars Account, Pound Sterling Account and Euro Account which are alleged to be contrary to relevant laws, especially for public office holders.

Justice Onnoghen, whose appointment suffered delay by President Muhammadu Buhari over undisclosed issues, may be the first CJN in Nigeria to be arraigned for criminal charges by the Federal Government.

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) has been engaged by the Federal Government to prosecute Justice Onnoghen.

However, eminent lawyers have already volunteered to put their services at the disposal of the CJN.

CCT: Fani-Kayode Spits Fire Over Buhari Govt’s Plan To Arraign CJN Onnoghen On Monday

Posted: 12 Jan 2019 03:49 PM PST

Chief Femi Fani-Kayode
Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, Nigeria's former Minister of Aviation, has reacted to President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government's order issued to Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Samuel Nkanu Onnoghen to immediately vacate his office.

The government will on Monday, January 14, 2019, arraign the CJN before the Justice Danladi Yakubu led-Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) in Abuja on charges of failures to declare his assets as required by law and for operating Bank Domiciliary Foreign Currency Accounts.

The charges against Justice Onnoghen were filed and served on him last Friday at his official residence in Abuja preparatory for his appearance at the tribunal.

The Federal Government, among others, is accusing Nigeria's Head of the Judiciary of refusal to declare his assets in breach of the provision of the Code of Conduct Bureau Act.

He is also being accused of maintaining domiciliary foreign currencies account which comprised Dollars Account, Pound Sterling Account and Euro Account which are alleged to be contrary to relevant laws, especially for public office holders.

Reacting, the former presidential spokesman, said it was clear that Buhari will not leave power if the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is defeated in the 2019 presidential election.

A terse statement from Fani-Kayode sent to DAILY POST reads: "Deji Adeyanju in custody and being framed with murder. Dino Melaye in custody and being framed with attempted murder. Doyin Okupe in custody and being framed with corruption.

"Sambo Dasuki in custody and being framed with corruption. Ibrahim El-Zakzaky in custody and being framed with murder. Nnamdi Kanu in exile and being framed with treason.

"Meanwhile, the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJ ) has been added to the list. Buhari has directed that he should vacate his seat and prepare for arraignment on criminal charges on monday.

"This is all part of a well-crafted script. The bitter truth is that democracy is dead in Nigeria. If anyone thinks that Buhari intends to leave power this year or anytime in the near future they need to think again."

PDP Speaks On Buhari-led APC Govt’s Plan To Drag CJN Onnoghen To CCT On Monday

Posted: 12 Jan 2019 03:29 PM PST

Justice Walter Onnoghen
The main opposition party in Nigeria, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the Buhari led government, of plotting to destabilize and annex the Judiciary ahead of the 2019 general elections.

The party also alleged that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the cabal at the Buhari presidency are hounding Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen and seeking his removal so as to cause a constitutional crisis, instill fear in judicial officers and pave way for the foisting of a pliable CJN that will do their bidding on electoral matters.

CJN Onnoghen will be arraigned on Monday by the federal government.

PDP spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan, in a statement on Saturday, said: "APC seeks a new CJN that will aid its rigging schemes as well as execute the plot to use the court to detain and put opposition members and outspoken members of Civil Society Organizations out of circulation during the general elections.

"This development is a clear recipe for anarchy and a huge crisis that is capable of fracturing our justice system and derail our democracy as it portends a prelude to a total clamp down on institutions of democracy and rule of law in our country.

"The PDP therefore urges all Nigerians, the United Nations and all international bodies to unite in the defence of our democracy, especially at this very critical time in our political development.

"Moreover, if President Buhari is committed to cleaning up the system as he claims, we challenge him to allow the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, whose tenure has expired and who had also been rejected by Nigerians due to his manifest partisanship, to go.

"President Buhari should also ask Amina Zakari to recuse herself from INEC following her rejection by Nigerians over issues of impropriety in her appointment as Chairperson of the Presidential election collation committee.

"Furthermore, we challenge Mr. President to also commence plans for the immediate prosecution of members of his campaign organization, including his co-Chairman, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and the factional National Chairman of his APC, Adams Oshiomhole over allegations of corruption against them.

"Finally, the PDP counsels the APC to note that it has been rejected by Nigerians and as such should end all its actions and schemes that overheat the polity and place our nation on the precipice."

Why Buhari, APC Want CJN Onnoghen Out – Ex-Party Spokesman, Timi Frank

Posted: 12 Jan 2019 03:18 PM PST

Comrade Timi Frank
Comrade Timi Frank, former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has stated that the planned arraignment of the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen, before the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) is meant to anoint another CJN who would help legitimize President Muhammadu Buhari's second tenure at the Supreme Court.

Frank, in a statement in Abuja on Saturday, condemned the haste and the illegality apparent in the move by Buhari and APC to get Onnoghen replaced at all costs before the February presidential elections which he said they have concluded plans to rig in favour of Buhari and the APC.

He called on the international community to note the desperation of Buhari and the APC, especially their plan to rig and use the judiciary to legitimize their illegal return to office, Daily Post reports.

According to him, the plot to illegally remove Onnoghen to pave way for a favourable judicial verdict for Buhari and APC after rigging the 2019 elections would definitely be resisted by the generality of Nigerians who would not fold their hands and watch such open electoral robbery being planned by Buhari and his evil band.

Frank said: "Nigerians are not surprised at the desperation and haste by Buhari and the APC to illegally get Justice Onnoghen out of the Supreme Court and install a pliant CJN before the presidential elections in February.

"Knowing that Nigerians have rejected them and their inept, clueless, lifeless and incompetent administration, they are now in a panic mode.

"But what they don't know is that Nigerians are ready for them as they have resolved not to be fooled anymore. They will definitely be voted out but they are preparing ground for a spontaneous and massive crisis that will engulf the entire country should they rig the elections.

"They want to bring in a new CJN that will not only be of Northern Origin but that would do their evil bidding after rigging the elections but I want to warn them not to take Nigerians for granted."

He further stated that the move to illegally remove Onnoghen is a further demonstration of the tribalistic and nepotistic nature of the President who has ensured that 99.9 per cent of his appointments into public offices since 2015 are people who are either closely related to him and of Northwest or Northern origin.

He said: "We saw him when he relegated South-South candidate and former acting Director General of the Department of State Service (DSS), Matthew Seiyefa and appointed a retired kinsman to head the organization.

"He did this despite the fact that Seiyefa was not only the most senior officer at the DSS after the former DG of DSS, Lawal Daura was sacked, but the most experienced and capable person for the job.

"They know that the laws of the land do not permit the trial of a serving judge or justice without first subjecting any allegations against such a judicial officer for review by the National Judicial Council (NJC), yet they are in a hurry to illegally kick Onnoghen out because they are afraid that he would not lend the authority of the Supreme Court to validate their stay in office having planned to rig the elections.

"They are not also comfortable having a southerner occupying the position of CJN which is critical to validate their rigging plans. All they want is Buhari's brother or a CJN from the Northwest that would do their bidding.

"Recall that it took a national outcry before Buhari agreed to confirm Onnoghen's appointment. They did not want him then. They don't want him now, simply because he is from the South-South."

The political activist informed Nigerians that having emasculated and subjugated the legislature under Senate President Bukola Saraki, Buhari and APC's present game plan was to take over the judiciary.

"This is why all reasonable and well meaning Nigerians and the nation's allies in the international community must speak out to avert this plot to throw the country in confusion and crisis by Buhari and the APC," he stated.

Imo Guber: Tension Heightens In Imo APC As Gov. Okorocha, Aisha Clash In Owerri

Posted: 12 Jan 2019 03:02 PM PST

Gov. Rochas Okorocha and Mrs. Aisha Buhari
Mrs. Aisha Buhari, Wife of the President of Nigeria,  has disagreed with Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State after the governor boasted that his son in-law, Uche Nwosu will win the governorship election in the state and not the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Senator Hope Uzodinma.

Political tension was heightened Saturday, after the first lady and leaders of the party, and women who came from the five states of the South-East were angered by the Governor's comment forcing them to leave the stadium, Vanguard reports.

Aisha spoke at the South East Women and youths rally which held at Owerri. The mammoth crowd was watching keenly the show of force between the governor's men and supporters of Senator Hope Uzodinma who flooded the stadium.

The Master of Ceremony hired by the state government refused to acknowledge the presence of Senator Uzodinma and Senator Ben Uwajumogu.

But pressure from party leaders who came from Abuja and and APC supporters in the state forced the MC to recognize their presence even though he sang the name of Uche Nwosu who the APC supporters protested his presence at the stadium, through out the programme.

There were gunshots from security operatives when the wife of the Imo State governor was addressing the crowd.

There were clashes between the supporters of Uche Nwosu and those of Senator Uzodinma.

Two women sustained gunshot injury and were rushed to the hospital.

Security agents had to check the looming fight between the two camps so as to save the situation.

Okorocha's wife also refused to recognize Senator Hope to the chagrin of APC supporters.

The angry crowd booed the first lady of the State.

However, the National Woman Leader of the APC, Hajia Salamatu Bewa Eluma, urged the crowd to vote President Muhammadu Buhari, Senator Hope Uzodinma and all APC candidates in the South-East.

Other speakers concurred and called for votes for APC candidates which did not go down well with Governor Okorocha, who is supporting his in-law, Uche Nwosu, the candidate of the AA.

Okorocha, who looked visibly angry, lampooned the APC, asserting that, "the APC has not been fair to us, we are only being calm because of President Muhammdu Buhari who already has won in Imo State.

"We are going to support Buhari but let me tell you people, after we were cheated by the APC, in order to deliver the President, we formed an alliance with other political parties and leading among them is AA led by Ugwumba Uche Nwosu.

"Do not be deceived, Uche Nwosu of AA will win the governorship election in Imo State because he is on ground.

"We have no other candidate, we will not support those with stolen mandate."

But the President's wife, who was represented by Wife of the Vice President Mrs Osinbajo, disagreed and urged the crowd to vote all the APC candidates both in the state and the South-East.

"I am happy with the crowd we saw today it shows that Imo is APC and I want to urge all our youths not to fight, avoid any form of crisis because President Buhari is a peaceful man. From what we have seen today President Buhari has won the South East the same way all our APC candidates have won."

She further urged APC faithful to remain steadfast, asserting that "a vote for Buhari is a vote for progress. APC has done well and we must all support all APC candidates."

Saraki Vs Police: Police Reacts To Alarm Raised By Senate President, On IGP’s ‘Plot’ To Kill Him

Posted: 12 Jan 2019 02:21 PM PST

Senator Bukola Saraki
The Nigeria Police has reacted to the alarm by the Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki, that the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, was allegedly planning to assassinate him.

Force spokesman, acting DCP Jimoh Moshood, in a statement on Friday night, stated that all the statutory security protection on the person of the Senate President are also accorded him all the time.

He said Saraki's claims were incorrect, misleading and false and should be disregarded and discountenanced by the general Public.

Moshood noted: "The attention of the Nigeria Police Force has been drawn to a statement in the media credited to the Senate President on the recent political development in Kwara State where he raised allegations that "…the entire world to hold the IGP responsible if anything untoward happens to members of my family and myself".

"The Nigeria Police Force did not give any protection to any political thug or shield any APC thug to go to family quarters of the Senate President in Agbaji, Ilorin and vandalize houses, shops and inflict wounds with machete on three (3) people as claimed by the Senate President.

"The Police did not receive any complaint or report of gunshot and wounding as claimed by the Senate President in other areas he mentioned such as Adewole/Adeta, Ile-otan and Ubandawaki/Pakata.

"For avoidance of doubt, there was no complaint reported at any Police division within Ilorin metropolis or any other Police Division on the 10th January, 2019 to today 11th January 2019 of any attack, wounding, shooting and destruction of any property by any individual(s) or any political party on their members. However, Security within Ilorin metropolis and other locations in Kwara State has beefed-up to ensure the security of all Nigerians living in the State.

"It is pertinent to state that all Police personnel attached to the person of the Senate President, his office and family are intact and all the statutory security protection on the person of the Senate President are also accorded him all the time and there was no complaint from the Senate President before now to the Police on this.

"It is incumbent on the Force to set the record straight and correct the wrong impressions that must have been created in the minds of the general Public and the International Community from the misinformation and misleading account from the Senate President.

"The Inspector General of Police did not try any trick to implicate the Senate President in some criminal charges; the facts are in the public domain about the suspects of the Offa Bank Robbery now being prosecuted who implicated the Senate President in the matter.

"The Nigeria Police Force is hereby assuring all Nigerians that the Nigeria Police Force has no any undisguised hostility to the Senate President or his supporters in Kwara State or to jeopardize or undermine his personal security and that of his immediate and larger family. The

"Force will continue to be apolitical and will ensure adequate security throughout the Country for all political parties, their members and supporters before, during and after the 2019 General Election".

2019: Yoruba deserves 2023 presidency, Igbo are not serious – Amaechi

Posted: 12 Jan 2019 05:34 AM PST

Chief Mbazurike Amaechi
Chief Mbazurike Amaechi, First Republic Minister of Aviation,  has noted that Igbo people were indifferent over the prospects of producing the next President in 2023.

Amaechi told New Telegraph in Awka, Anambra State yesterday that power is not given on a platter of gold.

The elder statesman noted that the South West has shown stronger interest in the position.

According to him, "Power is not given on a platter of gold and the idea that Igbos will produce the next President of Nigeria in 2023 is not sacrosanct because there is no section in Nigerian construction that talked about rotation of power.

"The Yorubas are serious about this and they are working hard to get it and I expect our people in Igbo land to work hard and show seriousness.

"Our politicians in the South-East should wake up and show that we are interested but the Yoruba are more serious than us.

"If tomorrow the position goes to the South West we do not have anybody to blame because they deserve it going by the way they are fighting the agenda."

2019 Election: Buhari vs Atiku: Ohanaeze tells Igbo candidate who to vote during presidential poll

Posted: 12 Jan 2019 05:26 AM PST

Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, on Saturday pointed out qualities people of the South East should vote for in the forthcoming February presidential election.

Speaking with DAILY POST, Chuks Ibegbu, the Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the organisation said Ohanaeze will vote for any candidate who believes in the restructuring of Nigeria.

Ibegbu said Nigeria was in dire need of restructuring because the current set up of Nigeria doesn't favour people of the South East.

According to Ibegbu: "We have always emphasized on the restructuring of Nigeria that the country as it's presently constituted cannot work. We need to restructure the country, physical, structural and political restructuring. It's only these that will open up the dormant energy in the country.

"The Igbo, in particular, perform well when there is a level playing ground, as it is now our energies are bottled up they can't perform because the country is against them.

"So our position is that whoever will restructure Nigeria, open up the latent and hidden capacities of Nigeria that is the person we will support. If Buhari is ready to turn a new leaf and restructure Nigeria we will embrace him for another four years and if Atiku is genuinely committed to restructuring Nigeria we will support him.

"If Ezekwesili, Hashim and other presidential candidates are ready to restructure Nigeria, we will support them."

Bola Tinubu Reacts to ill-health claim, APC govs’ absence at Buhari’s campaign council meeting

Posted: 12 Jan 2019 05:17 AM PST

Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu
Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, National Leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), on Friday reacted to a claim that he slumped and was rushed to the hospital.

Tinubu spoke in Abuja when he received the representatives of traditional rulers from South West States led by the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi.

Former minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, had claimed that Tinubu collapsed shortly after he was appointed Chairman of Buhari's 2019 Campaign Council.

Fani-Kayode urged Nigerians, especially Yorubas to pray for the former Lagos governor.

He also noted that Tinubu always experiences terrible things each time he was given a major role in the APC government.

Reacting, Tinubu said the claim was "fake news".

He added: "Whoever is manufacturing it, you better not believe them."

On the absence of governors at the meeting of the presidential campaign council, Tinubu said: "That is negative and fake news too."

"The point is, the governors had to stay back home because we all don't have to converge in one place to decide certain modalities when we can easily go back to them on what was discussed and what we expect from your state.

"That is what we call structuring in an election. There are some jellyfish reporters around Nigeria these days," he noted.

Posted: 12 Jan 2019 04:00 AM PST

Falz.

A number of Nigerian artists have in the past been compared to the late Fela Anikulapo Kuti, but according to social media, the one who truly comes close in terms of his message, consciousness and fearlessness is rapper, Falz.

Falz released the new single, 'Talk' on Friday, January 11, 2019, as the lead single off his upcoming album, ''Moral Instructions'' and as the title suggests, not only did the rapper 'talk' on major and political happenings in the country [yet again], but he also got everyone 'talking' including sparking comparisons to the Afrobeat Legend, Fela.

The song which was accompanied by a vividly descriptive video shows Falz's intention in the light of events in the country, which is to ''save Nigeria'', backed by a call and response hook bringing some soft landing to his serious expressions.

In 2017, Falz dominated conversations with the release of the viral video to his song, 'This is Nigeria', the scathing record where he penned an open letter on the state of events in the country and the opening line on his new record takes a direct shot at the Muslim Rights group, MURIC, who threatened to take him to court.

''Brother Muri shout finish we no see am for court'', then he swiftly moves on to deeper topics as he speaks on the coming elections, the President's frequent trip abroad ''4 year tenure, 3 year holiday'', failed change promises as well as other troubling societal issues.

With 'Talk', Falz does not mince words on his view of things and has again abandoned the safer option of cynicism, for the whip of criticism.

Being conscious or politically aware in your music is one trait that a lot of Nigerian artists have shied away from in recent times, but he continues to distinguish himself as he consistently uses his music as a tool to speak up for the people.

The Fela comparisons return

It is now a given that any time a Nigerian artist attains a major feat like in the case of Wizkid or delivers protest music that shoot incendiary messages at the Government, the go-to name for comparisons is the late Abami Eda who was well known for brazenly taking shots at Nigerian politicians during his lifetime and thorn of successive Nigerian military governments.

Hence it was no surprise to see the Fela comparisons spark up again on Twitter with the release of the song.

Falz may have further strengthened these comparisons with the art cover for his upcoming album, Moral Instructions which was designed by the legendary Lemi Ghariokwu who is famous for his works with Fela.

But the major reason why this keeps happening is that Nigerians are in search of that voice who will convey their plight and despite the abundance of artists on the scene, many who claim to associate with his legacy and conveniently flirt with the Afrobeats genre when convenient, they shy away from lending their voice to the cries of Nigerians even in the midst of obvious societal turmoils.

Music, even rap, which is the genre usually in the forefront of speaking up against political oppression has long lost focus and bite in its chase for commercial relevance.

But Falz has dared to go down this path and while he may not exactly be 'Fela' in directly calling out the names of people in power, he has gotten bolder over the years with his messages triggering a call to action and resonating with the people.

Ahead of the 2019 elections, Falz says we need to talk, and with his album due in a few days, he plans to roll out a template to Nigerian youths that will focus on creating awareness and inspiring positive change.

We may not need a new Fela after all, in fact there are very few like him, but we should appreciate Falz, a man who on his own terms is proving to be more than just the musician, but an activist and the new 'hero' of the masses.

The origin of rap cyphers?

Posted: 12 Jan 2019 03:30 AM PST

The origin of rap cyphers?

Fundamental to the Hip-hop culture is rap battles. Rap battles are premised on off-the-cuff freestyled verses. Sometimes too, rap battles are more than just simple face-off between two warring lyricists and barring heads.

The term 'kill' became a Hip-hop colloquialism to define excellent performances off New York pavements, University of Lagos rap battles, and cassette aided freestyles in Jos and Kaduna, either in simple face-offs or even when the circle expands to threes and fours.

Thus, as the advent of documenting Hip-hop on vinyls and cassette tapes for capitalism to tap into its potential as a mainstream culture that transcends just DJing, B-balling and street level freestyles gained impetus, the fundamentals of Hip-hop also spilled over with it into the mainstream.

Asides the concept of features, battles and the need to claim supremacy and promote the positivity of ego were revamped in mainstream capitalism with rap features, posse cuts and and rap cyphers.

Though now, it is not entirely about claiming supremacy at freestyles anymore, but who has the most money, the idea is still there.

As discussed by Big Daddy Kane and Myka 9 in How Top Rap, "In the '80s when we said we wrote a freestyle rap, that meant that it was a rhyme that you wrote that was free of style... it's basically a rhyme just bragging about yourself."

Myka 9 adds, "Back in the day freestyle was bust[ing] a rhyme about any random thing, and it was not a written rhyme or something memorized."

Divine Styler says, "In the school I come from, freestyling was a non-conceptual written rhyme... and now they call freestyling off the top of the head, so the era I come from it's a lot different."

What then is a rap Cypher?

A rap cypher is simply a revamped, rebranded freestyle battle on inner-city street corners, sidewalks and project pavements.

Premised on the idea of 'freestyle rap', cyphers are then a more controlled freestyle rap session featuring more than two people, with time limits defined and with rappers having time to write before delivering their bars when called upon.

Adarsh Singh, a software developer dropped a cogent definition on his Quora page. He defined it as, "an informal gathering of rappers, beatboxers, and/or break-dancers in a circle, in order to jam musically together. The term has also in recent years come to mean the crowd which forms around freestyle battles, consisting of spectators and onlookers."

Usually, it's just a bar-fest with punchlines and with one intention, 'kill' or be better than anyone else in sight, but the idea is also to rap on a myriad of topics to deliver bars.

Though similar, a posse cut isn't rap cypher

A posse cut is more often than not a track with two or more rappers than just a freestyle session that a rap Cypher is - though they can both be based on random topics.

A posse cut could also have a hook or chorus while a rap cypher mostly doesn't have a hook.

Basically, a rap cypher is a rap freestyle, posse cut without a hook.

So why is this shade of rap freestyles called a 'cypher'?

Replying to a question on discussion platform, Quora, Jorge Banuelos, a professional of Religious Studies said, "The use of the term "cipher" stems from the influence of Five Percenter beliefs. Also known as the Nation of Gods and Earths (NGE), The Five Percenters champion the beliefs of Clarence 13X.

"Their genealogy stems back to the Nation of Islam and W. Fard Muhammed. The cipher is a concept. It's to relay esoteric knowledge to only those who are hip to it. The cipher is intentionally esoteric so as to be only understood by those enlightened to its knowledge.

"So, when MCs spit in a circle, the cipher is meant to be a way of spitting knowledge and facts only readily understood by those in the Hip-Hop tradition. Other popular phrases of the Hip-Hop Vernacular like "Dropping science". "What's up, G", "Arm leg leg arm head (ALLAH)", "Sugar Honey Iced Tea (SHIT)", etc., stem from the Five Percenters.

"The Five Percenters were able to influence Hip-Hop to such a high degree due to their proximity to the culture in its nascent stages. Back when DJ Kool Herc, Bambaataa, Grandmaster Flash, etc., were having their parties, they brought in 5%-ers to act as community police by keeping the peace between the warring gang sets of NYC.

"Thus, the 5%-ers would spread their Supreme Wisdom during music breaks and in between sets."

The book, The Five Percenters: Islam, Hip-Hop, and the Gods of New York (2008) by Michael Muhammed Knight was also instructive on the art of freestyling.

Meanwhile, on the same thread, Omar Judah said, "Black people slang words. Cypher via cipher comes from "de-cipher". As in to reveal the meaning of. It was first used to mean I encode my lyrics with esoteric meaning." The rap was a cypher—a coded message.

'It later became associated with freestyle, esp. with emcees with beast mode lyrical game.It quickly morphed into a sort of Dream Team-like group of freestyle gurus, who often could elegantly finish the other guy's former bar.

"Like almost all things innovated by black rappers, white culture has diluted the original meaning intended by us.

"We originally used it to mean "a nigga in an organized neighborhood alliance/gang. White culture now uses the word to mean: anyone who exhibits aggressive behavior. WTF. Yes, because WP throw the word around liberally on anyone who doesn't act like little Susie & little Johnny."

In modern times, the culture of rap cyphers is majorly showcased on the platform of Black Entertainment Television (BET) and its yearly cyphers, sandwiched in between stops and extras of the BET Hip-hop Awards.

Nigeria's first major cypher was the BET Cypher 2011 featuring Naeto C, M.I. Abaga, Ice Prince, Vector and so forth.

Popular musician Ara talks on why FG should ban bleaching creams

Posted: 12 Jan 2019 01:30 AM PST

Nigerian `gangan' drummer, Aralola Olumuyiwa, popularly known as `Ara' has called on the Federal Government to place a ban on the sales and use of skin-lightening products in the country.

`Ara', the talking-drum drummer told NAN in Lagos on Thursday that skin-lightening soaps and cosmetics would always have adverse health implications on their users.

She said that the decision by the Government of Rwanda to ban the products was a step in the right direction to ensure the sound health of its citizenry.

According to her, placing a ban on the sales of the products may not eradicate its use completely but it will minimise the rate.

"This is a good development which should be replicated in Nigeria.

"We have seen many people who had developed skin cancer, irritation and other ailments as a result of using skin-lightening products.

"The Federal Government should work on this and ensure that most of these products are not produced in the country and ban its importation as well.

"This may not eradicate its usage but will definitely minimise it.

"People who use these dangerous products do not bear the brunt alone but it also affects their loved ones when users begin to feel the effects of the cream or soap,'' she said.

Also, a medical practitioner, Dr Ayopo Adeyemi, said that the use of lightening creams and soaps which could lead to could cause skin cancer to individuals.

Adeyemi said that such products could expose the endothelial cells of the skin to wear and tear.

She explained that the endothelial cells form a one-cell thick-walled layer called endothelium that lines all the blood vessels such as arteries, arterioles, venules, veins and capillaries.

According to her, some other dangers associated with skin bleaching include: burning or redness; skin diseases; liver and kidney damages among others.

"Bleaching of the skin is dangerous because it always has various adverse effects on the health of those doing it.

"We must stop using creams with dangerous chemicals and go for moisturisers, instead," she said.

Adeyemi said that suturing a bleached skin after an accident was always difficult, adding that even if the skin could be sutured, it would continue to break down.

NAN reports that the Government of Rwanda announced the ban on use and sales of cosmetic products for skin-lightening some days ago.

"Love the skin that you have," is the message from the Government of Rwanda in its fight against skin- lightening products.

Francois Uwinkindi of the Cancer Unit in Rwanda's Ministry of Health said, "We are now putting more efforts into educating people, going around and seizing those illegal products.

"We are joining those countries, which are also into the fight against the use of illegal skin-lightening cosmetics," he said.

Fela would have been president of Nigeria if alive – Femi Kuti

Posted: 12 Jan 2019 01:00 AM PST

Fela would have been president of Nigeria if alive

Afrobeat legend, Femi Kuti, on Friday said his father, Fela would have been the president of Nigeria if he was alive.

Femi said this on Friday while speaking on his preferred presidential candidate ahead of the 2019 presidential election.

When asked on who Fela would have supported among the presidential candidate if he was alive, Femi speaking on TVC said Fela would not have supported any of the 2019 candidates including President Muhammadu Buhari and Atiku Abubakar.

"If my father was alive, he would be president of Nigeria in 2019.

"I don't think anybody in Nigeria political scene is a pan African socialist so I don't see anyway Fela can support any one of the 2019 presidential candidates."

Femi also condemned those smoking 'weed' and chasing ladies all in the name of trying to imitate Fela.

"I would not let people bastardize Fela's legacy by smoking 'Igbo', chasing many girls, claiming to be like him," he added.
