A guide to Ziplining in Nigeria #Bucketlist2019

Posted: 22 Jan 2019 10:00 PM PST

To experience the exhilirating thrill of adrenaline while zipping through the air, there are a few things you need to know.
As we always say, you don't have to go too far to be adventurous or cross activities off your bucket list.

A bucket list is made up of several experiences or achievements that a person hopes to have or accomplish during their lifetime. It literally means a list, written or unwritten, of things you want to do before you kick the proverbial bucket.

For travel and adventure enthusiasts, this bucket list seems to mean access to obscure knowledge, interesting culture, people and great experiences. Common bucket list activities include sky-diving, skiing, skinny deeping, jet skiing, surfing, mountain climbing, bungee jumping and the like. Though some of these activities are not necessarily things you can do in Nigeria, there are lots of bucket list worthy activities and places for travel enthusiasts in Nigeria.

While a lot of people don't know, one of these activities is ziplining. Check out other bucket list activities you can do in Nigeria here.

Where can you zipline?

In Nigeria, there are just two cities where you can actually go ziplining in Nigeria:

Lagos- Lekki Leisure Lake

Lekki Leisure Lake is located at the 2nd roundabout in Lekki, tucked away along the Lekki penisula shoreline. It offers a range of outdoor and leisure activities such as jet skiing, banana floats, quad biking, zip lining, etc.

Abuja- Zuma Rock Golf Resort

The Zuma Rock Golf Resort offers activities such as golfing, golf academy, retreats, boot camps, hiking, excursions, picnics, summer program, training/ development and events.

What do you need to know?

Lekki Leisure Lake is open only on weekends and public holidays and entry requires N1,000 for adults and N500 for children under the age of 10. However, ziplining itself costs N3,000 once you get in.

If you have anxiety when it comes to heights, have a heart condition, or are pregnant, you aren't supposed to zipline.

What to wear?

Because you'll be zipping through the air at fast speeds, all loose clothing, jewelry, hair, is discouraged. Wear tight-fitting clothes, shoes, remove jewelries and tie loose hair.

Chris Brown has been reportedly accused of raping a woman in France.

Posted: 22 Jan 2019 09:30 PM PST

Chris Brown under investigation for alleged rape in France
There are indications that Chris Brown has a big case to answer in France as he is presently under investigation for allegedly raping a woman.

According to French magazine, CLOSER, Chris Brown is under investigation for allegedly raping a woman early in January 2019. According to them, a 24-year-old lady said Chris Brown raped her on the night of 15th-16th January 2019.

The woman filed a complaint to the police claiming that Brown invited her to his hotel room at Le Mandarin Oriental along with another woman. However, in her testimony, she claims that she ended up in a single room with Chris Brown where she claims she was raped.

She also alleges that Breezy's bodyguard and his friend also abused her. Paris parquet already opened a case and began investigating into the claims that he raped her at his hotel. Chris Brown is yet to release a statement.

This is not the first time Chris Brown will be facing a similar allegation as we can recall that back in 2018, a certain lady alleged that she raped at the music star's house.

Woman alleges she was repeatedly raped at Chris Brown's home

Back in 2018, a woman has come out to claim that she was allegedly raped repeatedly at Chris Brown's home. According to The Blast, the woman who is simply identified as Jane Doe has filed a lawsuit against Chris Brown and two others.

Documents obtained from the court, claim Brown held a party in his home on February 23, 2017, in which his friend, Lowell Grissom Jr., also known as Young Lo, and an unnamed woman, "Doe X," forcibly held her down and forced her to perform sexual acts.

Jane Doe is reported to be suing Chris Brown and two others for sexual battery, battery, assault and intentional infliction of emotional distress among other charges. However, the singer's lawyer Mark Geragos told TMZ the woman's lawyer, Gloria Allred, sought $17 million, and he denied Brown has taken any action.

PDP Dares Buhari To Probe APC Chairman, Oshiomhole, Amaechi, Aisha’s Aide & Others

Posted: 22 Jan 2019 05:12 PM PST

President Muhammadu Buhari
The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, on Tuesday charged President Muhammadu Buhari to "immediately" order the probe of Rotimi Amaechi, Minister of Transportation and the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Adams Oshiomhole.

PDP said Buhari should order the probe of both men over corruption allegations hanging on their neck to prove that his anti-graft fight was sincere.

The former ruling party gave the charge in responsible to disclosure by the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo that Buhari has ordered the prosecution of former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Babachir Lawal.

A statement by PDP's spokesperson, Kola Ologbondiyan said Buhari should go beyond Lawal and the former Director General of the National Intelligence Agency, NIA, Wale Oke and probe members of the APC, Daily Post reports.

According to Ologbondiyan: "Singling out Babachir Lawal and Ayodele Oke, for prosecution, while providing official cover to numerous other indicted APC leaders and persons close to him, President Buhari has further confirmed that he is indeed partisan and insincere in prosecuting the anti-corruption fight.

"Moreover, the fact that, according to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Mr. President had to give his nod before Babachir and Oke could be prosecuted, also goes to further confirm that President Buhari has annexed the system and directly determines who is prosecuted and who is spared.

"We, therefore, challenge President Buhari to immediately order the prosecution of all APC leaders, particularly members of his Presidential Campaign Council, beginning with the APC factional National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, the campaign Director-General, Rotimi Amaechi, other directors and zonal coordinators, who have allegations of corruption hanging on their necks.

"Mr. President should also immediately order the prosecution of the former aide to the First Lady, Aisha Buhari, Mr. Baba Inna, who was arrested in September last year, over accusations of receiving N2.5 billion from politicians, businessmen and women on behalf of the First Lady.

"He should also order the prosecution of Mrs. Amina Mohammed, who while being paraded by the Department of State Services (DSS), last year stated in public that persons close to President Buhari were involved in serial fraud and looting of public resources under the official cover of the Buhari Presidency.

"President Buhari should also order an open inquest into alleged involvement of some individuals said to be close to the Buhari Presidency in the N1.032 trillion alleged corrupt acquisitions in 9Mobile and Keystone Bank PLC.

"He is also invited to order an investigation into allegations that persons close to him and serving in his Presidency took N500 million asbribe to reduce the fine imposed on a telecommunication company operating in the country, from N1.03 trillion to N330 billion."

Also, the former ruling party dared "President Buhari to allow an inquest into the N14 trillion looted oil money under his watch, as detailed in the NNPC leaked memo; the handling of the repatriated $322m that has been siphoned under the guise of sharing to the poor; the N33 billion Internally Displace Persons (IDP) intervention fund and the billions of naira already frittered through the 'Tradermoni scheme'.

"Until Mr. President musters the required political will to carry out these actions, his war against corruption remains a charade."

This followed Onnoghen's failure to appear before the Code of Conduct Tribunal for the second time.

Onnoghen, who was scheduled for arraignment last week, failed to appear before the court, forcing the tribunal to adjourn till Tuesday.

2019 Elections: Details Of Meeting With EU Observers With Buhari Emerges, As He Speaks On INEC, Elections

Posted: 22 Jan 2019 12:25 PM PST

President Muhammadu Buhari
President Muhammadu Buhari, Tuesday, in Abuja told the European Union Observer Mission (EOM) to Nigeria's elections starting in February, that he was impressed by the preparations made by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, and was optimistic that the electoral body would deliver on its mandate of a credible poll.

Receiving the EOM, led by the Chief Observer and member of the European Parliament, Maria Arena, at the State House, the President said he had listened earlier in the day, to the INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, when he briefed the National Council of State.

He said, "I am happy and impressed with the briefing he gave. I hope that the confidence he exuded and the intellect he brought to bear on the Report will be justified at the end of the day."

The President told the EU delegation that Nigeria had grown its electoral system incrementally, getting better, year after year, Daily Post reports.

"Having participated in elections four times in the past, I would say that since 2015, technology has helped the credibility of our elections," he said.

Buhari said that Nigeria with over 250 cultural groups across religions and ethnic groups, with each group canvassing for identity and primacy in the affairs of the nation, "patriotism demands that we identify the nation's best interest and go with it."

He stressed that the governing All Progressives Congress, APC, administration had the good sense of identifying the national interest to include security, peace and stability, improved economy, jobs creation and the campaign against corruption, noting that the party was not wrong in 2015, and is not wrong going into the election this year with the same issues in its campaigns.

The President thanked the delegation for taking interest in Nigeria's elections, and in the affairs of the nation generally.

The EOM team, accompanied by Ambassador Ketil Karlsen, Head, European Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, said that the EU had observed every election in Nigeria since 1999, and had come here again for the next one, following an invitation by INEC.

The delegation promised impartiality and neutrality in the monitoring of the elections.

Tinubu Fires Obasanjo Over Attack On Buhari, APC, Makes Revelation(Full Text)

Posted: 22 Jan 2019 11:46 AM PST

Asiwaju Bola Tinubu
More criticisms have come the way of former president Olusegun Obasanjo over his letter where he chastised President Muhammadu Buhari and his administration, claiming the president was preparing to rig the 2019 poll.

In his response to the letter on Tuesday, former Lagos governor and Co-Chair of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaigns, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, said Obasanjo was projecting unto the APC the misconduct he would perpetrate if still in power.

"Yet, the ways of Obasanjo are not those of the APC. And this difference has meant the better for Nigeria," Tinubu said in the strongly-worded letter.

Asiwaju described the former president as an election rigger without peer.

"There is no election which occurred under Obasanjo's watch or in which he participated that did not involve cheating on his part. Even the late President Umaru Musa Yar 'Adua admitted he was the beneficiary of a flawed election engineered by none other than today's vociferous complainant," he said.

Tinubu's riposte personally signed by him, titled "CHIEF OBASANJO – AT WAR AGAINST HIS OWN DEEDS", reads: "Former President Obasanjo is many things to many people; but he is all things unto himself. His recent contribution to our political discourse wherein he alleges plots to steer the coming elections shows he benefits from an exceedingly faulty memory, is purely shameless or has a most wicked sense of humor. Perhaps all three are facets of his makeup and were equally on display in his latest prosaic display.

"The crux of his long tirade was the allegation that INEC is poised to cook the election results. Chief Obasanjo should not get his dander up and waste good ink for nothing. This election will be a free and open exercise of the people's right to choose their leaders. Obasanjo makes fiery allegations against this right but offers no corroborating evidence; he presents only reams of words. This is because Obasanjo is projecting onto the APC the misconduct he would wrought if still in power. Yet, the ways of Obasanjo are not those of the APC. And this difference has meant the better for Nigeria.

"Moreover, Chief Obasanjo should be the last to complain about election rigging. His administration was an unalloyed miscarriage of justice and of the best aspirations of the Nigerian people. We all know he was not elected in 1999. He was handed Nigeria on a silver platter; perhaps because Nigeria was so easily given that he went about treating the nation as if it was a less than precious thing; he thought it was a cheap give-away not a privilege to govern this nation.

"This man should have positioned himself to be the father of the nation. All the goodwill that could be granted a political figure was bestowed on him. The global economy was such that it fueled our growth. Everyone wanted Nigeria to succeed after emerging from years of noxious military rule. Despite the flawed exercise that rendered him president, we all bit our tongues in hope that he would say and do the right things that would move Nigeria forward.

"Instead of being a unifying figure as Commander-in-chief, he lowered himself to being a divisive, vindictive conniver. There was no table which he neared that he did not upset and overturn. There was no one who came into his company for any period of time with whom he did not fall out if he expresses a thought contrary to one of his.

"He tried to convert our young democracy into a one party state. His PDP boasted that they would rule for 60 uninterrupted years. Never did they boast that they would govern us well during even one year of the sixty. He could have placed the economy on the path to durable growth and shared prosperity through diversification, industrialization and creation of a social safety net for the poor. Instead, he handed the economy over to a tight group of cronies, turning what should be a modern economy into a version of the mammoth trading companies that dominated the 17th and 18th century. The Transcorp conglomerate was intended to be a throwback to monopolistic enterprises such as the East Indian Company wherein a select handful would control the national economy's strategic heights.

"We hoped that Obasanjo would personify statesmanship, thus showing the way to a more benign political culture. Instead, he bickered and feuded with his vice president and mostly anyone who dared remind him that he was human and thus infallible.

"Given the vast margin between the good he could have achieved and the nebulous feats that comprise his true record, Chief Obasanjo is the person most responsible for the flaws in the Nigerian political economy since 1999. His ego is as expansive as the firmament but his good deeds would fit into a modest sachet with ample room to spare.

"The worst of Obasanjo's record, I have yet to describe. When it comes to elections, he has been a rigger without peer. There is no election which occurred under Obasanjo's watch or in which he participated that did not involve cheating on his part. Even the late President Umaru Musa Yar 'Adua admitted he was the beneficiary of a flawed election engineered by none other than today's vociferous complainant. For Obasanjo to lament over electoral malpractice is tantamount to the ocean complaining that a few raindrops are causing it to get wet.

"In his writing, Obasanjo alleges the Osun election indicates rigging will take place in the coming contests. Let's go straight to the truth, Obasanjo has no grievance with the process. His personal history suggests fair process is the least of his concerns. What knocks Obasanjo off kilter is that he could not dictate the result in Osun. He told those in the PDP that he held sway in Osun and throughout the Southwest. They believed him. He led them to defeat notwithstanding the almost impossible voter turnout in PDP strongholds in that state. Obasanjo can only win an election when has the final say over the final vote tally. Otherwise, he is a troubled man.

"In an attempt to relieve his trouble, Chief Obasanjo makes reference to a joke about INEC. He says, "The INEC was asked if the Commission was ready for the election and if it expects the election to be free, fair and credible. The INEC man is reported as saying in response, 'we are ready with everything including the results.'" The joke has a touch of humor; we are glad that Obasanjo is not completely devoid of this most human of traits. However, he makes a telling omission by failing to give you the vintage of this bit of sarcasm.

"The jest was not born last week. It's vintage is circa 2003- a time when a certain President Obasanjo rode roughshod over INEC. He would summon the nervous INEC chairman to the Villa, proceeding to hector the man until he gave way to Obasanjo's demands. At Obasanjo's urging, INEC improperly published fake election results on the gubernatorial race in Lagos. Not until a public outcry did INEC back away from rigging Lagos. A similar attempt was made in Lagos in 2007. In essence, for Obasanjo to laugh at this joke means he has belatedly developed the ability to laugh at himself.

"If Obasanjo was so committed to free elections, how could he countenance Atiku's recent boast of single-handedly rigging elections in the Southwest. Atiku claimed that he took all states for the PDP but left Lagos alone due to some misguided affinity for me. By this statement, Atiku publicly admitted to rigged elections in the SW. Beyond resort to wholesale rigging, Atiku could never deign to be more popular and potent in the Southwest than the panoply of good and decent leaders that guided the defunct AC. Moreover, I can assure you that we did not need Atiku's false beneficence to win the elections in Lagos. The people voted for us and their votes countered the ill-designs Obasanjo and Atiku set in motion. Thus, if Obasanjo cannot chastise Atiku for publicly boasting that he rigged elections, then Obasanjo's display of righteous indignation is but a magician's trick.

"His fine words and sentiments come a dozen years too late. These noble things would have greater effect had he placed them into practice when he was at the helm of affairs. At that time, he was powerful so he did as he might. Now that he lacks power, he has taken to preach that which he never did.

"In his commentary, he mentions that INEC has a record of past rigging. I wonder if he understands the admission he makes. No other president has exercised such tight control over INEC for as many years as Obasanjo. No president has had the domineering relationship with INEC that Obasanjo enjoyed. If there are reports of past INEC rigging, those reports are of Obasanjo's making. It is the irony of ironies for Obasanjo to complain of the fruit on the table when his was the hand that planted the tree.

"Chief Obasanjo tries to further confuse matters by pointing to the case of the CJN's assets declaration as evidence of future vote-rigging via tampering with the judiciary. Again, Obasanjo goes into a personality shift. For years, Obasanjo has boasted of himself as our corruption fighter nonpareil. The very aim of this current letter is to attack imagined INEC malfeasance. Yet, with regard to the CJN, he blithely ignores the large cache of dollars in the CJN's account and the millions of dollars that passed through the accounts. Obasanjo seems unbothered by the unexplained presence of such sums. Perhaps Obasanjo's nonchalance regarding the money is that he expected the funds there because he knows both the origin and reasons for the trove.

"Chief Obasanjo sinks so low as to suggest that the VP, during the exercise of his official duties, was taking the PVC numbers of market women and traders. This statement reveals the bilious nature of the man. Obasanjo even quotes the notorious Bode George in claiming that the VP was "gutting our collective treasury" by giving loans of N10,000 to market women under the administration's empowerment programs.

"What? Giving money to poor people to enhance their lives and escape the maw of poverty is, by PDP metrics, gutting the collective treasury. If helping the poor is gutting the treasury, Atiku's privatizing large chunks of the economy into his own pocket must have been seen by the PDP as a vital public service. Jonathan and his Petroleum Minister's siphoning government coffers of several billion dollars to enrich the already-rich must have been viewed by the PDP as the epitome of a social safety net. Obasanjo's and the PDP's disdain for the common person could not be clearer.

"Obasanjo should be ashamed to even raise this issue. When he was president, the economy was on an easy sledding due to positive global trends. Obasanjo did not raise a finger to do anything for the poor. He and Atiku were champions of trickle-down economics. If anything good trickled down to the poor it was by accident. Obasanjo left the poor unattended because he cared nothing for them. Poverty increased under his cold indifference. Not one meaningful social program was established during his watch. The banking and pension deregulation he brought were geared to profit the wealthy CEO's and managers of these financial entities. The malpractices attendant to these deregulation fiascos extinguished the savings of millions of Nigerians. In reliance on these artifices of Obasanjo and his ilk, many Nigerians were thrust down the lower rungs of the poverty they so desperately sought to avoid. Obasanjo's allies gobbled the savings of the poor and still feast on them to this day.

"Chief Obasanjo is one of the last people to preach to anyone about using public funds to care for the poor. He had the gall to fret that funds should not be given to the urban poor because they are not poor enough. But his grouse does not show any defect in the administration's program. His complaint shows the defect in Obasanjo's humanity or lack of it. To complain that some people are not poor enough for his liking is to reveal that seeing human suffering does not motivate him to cure it. He would rather that people suffer it the more. Your unease and distress becomes his entertainment or at least evidence he is superior to the common man. Watching a laborer struggle against penury is no more than a spectator sport for Obasanjo.

"The most fantastic of all his claims is that this administration has returned Nigeria to the days of Abacha. If this were true, the press would be constantly closed. Obasanjo would be constricted in writing such letters. Elections would not be upon us. Atiku would not be able to freely campaign and the diversity of opinion in the public space would be suppressed.

"For Obasanjo to utter such an outrage is that he hopes lighting strikes twice. He was ushered into office after Abacha's demise. He thinks if he can invoke Abacha's name, the same thing will happen again. By hook, crook or utter fantasy, Obasanjo seeks to return to Aso Villa, not as an irritating, importuning guest but as a long-term resident. He wants to be back in control. If he cannot be president, then the president better carve from his office a special room for Obasanjo.

"Obasanjo thinks he is more than the greatest Nigerian. He thinks himself greater than Nigeria itself. Unless he is allowed to lead the procession, he will groan, grouse and grit. However, neither President Buhari nor the progressive APC have much use for his reactionary policies and his megalomaniac ways. Thus, we shall be forced to endure more of his letters. But enduring such missives is vastly superior and small price to pay for not having to endure a repeat of his unenlightened misgovernance".More criticisms have come the way of former president Olusegun Obasanjo over his letter where he chastised President Muhammadu Buhari and his administration, claiming the president was preparing to rig the 2019 poll.

But enduring such missives is vastly superior and small price to pay for not having to endure a repeat of his unenlightened misgovernance".

President Muhammadu Buhari and Chief Olusegun Obasanjo
Ahead of the forthcoming elections, the National Council of State has expressed satisfaction with the level of preparations of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

The position of the council was made public by the Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu while addressing State House correspondents on the outcome of the meeting, on Tuesday.

The Governor disclosed that the council was convinced on the level of preparedness of the electoral body, Daily Post reports.

According to Akeredolu: "He informed the Council of the preparedness of INEC and everybody in the hall was convinced that INEC was ready for this election and a lot of things have been put in place.

"I think we all concluded that it is important for the chairman to even speak to the nation on the preparedness of INEC for this election – that would convince all of us that this forthcoming election is going to be free and fair.

"Look at it, they have improved card reader, the details of what had been done to improve it was made known.

"It was made known that the process of continuous accreditation and voting system (vote at the same time and you leave) was the best.

"He also told the Council that they are not lacking in terms of finance and that all the monies appropriated have been given to them and that they are ready for the election.

"He went further to inform the Council that all training and retraining of every category of staff that they (INEC) will use, they have already started and they are having consultations with every group of people, religious, artisans and trade unions to let them know (about the election).

"So, everybody was convinced that INEC, as at today, is ready for the elections and questions were asked, he was interrogated and he responded and gave adequate explanation to the satisfaction of all of us."

The council had earlier approved N27, 000 as new minimum wage for workers.

Nasarawa begins fertiliser production at 100 tonnes per hour

Posted: 22 Jan 2019 08:56 AM PST

Nasarawa State Fertiliser
The Nasarawa State fertiliser blending plant in Lafia, the state capital, has started commercial production ahead of this year's farming season.

Governor Umaru Tanko Almakura, who visited the plant to supervise its maiden production, said the growing need to ensure food sufficiency, as well as support Federal Government's commitment towards food security, propelled the state to embark on the project.

At the test-running of the blending plant on Makurdi Road, the governor expressed optimism that with the start of production at the plant, the state would meet the demand of farmers in the state and beyond.

He expressed satisfaction that the modern fertiliser blending plant had opened a new vista in the production of the item, thus driving the value chain in promoting agriculture in the country as well as impacting farming in the state.

Al-Makura noted that in addition to making fertiliser available to farmers, the blended commodity would blend with the specific soil samples in the state.

He said: "The drive was in line with the Presidential Fertiliser Initiative of ensuring that Nigeria produces fertiliser needed by farmers in the country. Having completed the installation of the plants in Lafia, Akwanga and Keffi, Nasarawa State is capable of producing 100 tonnes per hour. This would enable the state to go even further as it considers the production of fertiliser for export."

The Nasarawa state Government fertilizer blending plants are located in Lafia, Akwanga and Keffi while a modular plant is also set up at the Nasarawa State University Faculty of Agriculture, Lafia.

2019 Elections: Mercenaries From Niger Republic To Attack Governors, Top Govt Officials In North-West – FG

Posted: 22 Jan 2019 08:17 AM PST

Alhaji Lai Mohammed
Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the Minister of Information and Culture,  has raised the alarm that some armed mercenaries from Niger Republic have been contracted to attack top government functionaries, including state governors across the North-west between now and the general elections.

The Minister said that the main opposition, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, having realised that their fortunes have dwindled badly ahead of the polls, are desperately orchestrating widespread violence with a view to truncating the elections.

He said the opposition party was triggering a constitutional crisis that could snowball into the establishment of an interim government, Daily Post reports.

Mohammed stated this when he addressed a press conference in Abuja on Monday.

He said, "As you are aware, Nigeria goes to the polls just 27 days from now.

"However, the Federal Government is in possession of credible intelligence to the effect that widespread violence being orchestrated by the opposition is threatening the 2019 general elections.

"You have definitely seen the massive and warm reception that President Muhammadu Buhari has been receiving across the country, compared to the teeming crowds that have been attending the opposition rallies.

"Having realized that their fortunes have dwindled badly ahead of the polls, the desperate opposition is orchestrating widespread violence with a view to truncating the elections, thus triggering a constitutional crisis that could snowball into the establishment of an interim government.

"Before you accuse the government of crying wolf, let me tell you, gentlemen, that we have credible intelligence that armed bandits and Boko Haram insurgents have been mobilized to engage in massive attacks and other acts of violence in several states across the country, including Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Benue, Kano, Kaduna, Nasarawa, Plateau, Taraba and Zamfara.

"The Benue-based armed criminal group, led by Terwase AKWAZA, also known as Gana, has been commissioned to strike soft targets in Benue, Nasarawa, and Taraba States. In Kano State, a group of notorious miscreants have been mobilized by some prominent opposition leaders to provoke massive chaos before, during and after the elections.

"There is also an international dimension to the evil plan. Some armed mercenaries from Niger Republic have been contracted to attack top government functionaries, including state governors, across the North-west between now and the elections.

"The Federal Government is taking every possible measure to counter these evil plans by unpatriotic anarchists and ensure the success of the 2019 General Elections.

"The Administration's commitment to a credible, free, fair and peaceful elections is unshaken. After all, according to the online encyclopedia – Wikipedia – elections have been the usual mechanism by which modern representative democracy has operated since the 17th century.

"We appeal to all Nigerians to be vigilant in the days ahead. We also appeal to the media to help in sensitizing members of the public on these observed threats, which are capable of disrupting the elections. The punchline of our long running campaign on security – if you see something, say something – remains relevant, perhaps even more, at this time.

"Finally, all the relevant agencies under the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture will work together to ensure that Nigerians are alerted to the dangers posed to the forthcoming elections by unscrupulous, unpatriotic and desperate characters who will not hesitate to destabilize the country if they cannot achieve their inordinate ambition."

Appeal Court to hear CJN’s appeal Thursday

Posted: 22 Jan 2019 06:45 AM PST

Court Of Appeal Abuja
The Court of Appeal in Abuja yesterday fixed Thursday for hearing in the appeal filed by the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen, against his planned trial before the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT).

A three-man panel of the Appellate Court, led by Justice Abdu Aboki, after hearing preliminary submissions from lawyer to the CJN, Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN) and Emmanuel Omonuwa, Director Civil Litigation, Federal Ministry of Justice (for the respondent – the Federal Republic of Nigeria), adjourned to Thursday.

The court adjourned principally for the hearing of a motion on notice, filed by the CJN, for an injunction restraining the CCT from conducting further proceedings in respect of the charge against him pending the determination of the appeal.

The CJN's appeal, which has the Federal Republic of Nigeria as the sold respondent, is challenging the order made by the CCT on January 14, this year, for the hearing of two pending applications.

One of the applications filed by the prosecution is seeking to compel the CJN to vacate office pending the conclusion of his trial. The other application, which the CCT planned to hear today, is filed by the CJN. It is challenging the tribunal's jurisdiction.

When the appeal was mentioned yesterday afternoon, Awomolo identified the various sets of documents filed on January 18, this year, by the appellant, including a motion ex-parte, motion on notice for injunction and a notice of appeal.

Awomolo, who led a number of senior lawyers, including Sebatine Hon (SAN) and Mahmoud Magaji (SAN) for the appellant, said the respondent was served on January 18.

He said since the respondent was represented in court, the judges could do away with the hearing of the motion ex-parte and proceed to hear the motion on notice.

Responding, Omonuwa sought a short adjournment to enable him respond to the motion on notice. He said he needed three days to file a counter affidavit.

When asked to respond, Awomolo said it was within the right of the respondent to be allowed to respond to a motion served on him.

Awomolo said he was not objecting to Omonuwa's request for adjournment.

He, however, prayed the court to order parties to maintain status quo and refrain from taken steps, in respect of the charge before the CCT, pending the next date, a request Omonuwa objected to.

Omonuwa said there were already three subsisting restraining orders made by three High Court, restraining the CCT from proceeding with the hearing of the charge against the CJN.

He said: "When I was going through the processes served on us, I noticed that three courts have granted orders restraining proceedings before the CCT.

"A Federal High Court in Abuja made a restraining order on January 14; the National Industrial Court of Nigeria in Abuja made similar order the same day. And on January 15, a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory made similar order.

"All the three orders are subsisting. None has been set aside. In view of these three pending orders, there may not be need for additional order by this court," Omonuwa said.

Ruling, Justice Aboki noted that the appellant's application before the court was a motion on notice, seeking stay of further proceedings in the charge before CCT pending the determination of the appeal.

He said "no form of order shall be made", and adjourned the hearing of the motion on notice to January 24.

Meanwhile, proceedings are expected to resume today before the CCT in respect of the non-assets disclosure charge filed against the CJN by the Federal Government through the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB).

Chairman of the tribunal, Danladi Umar had, on January 14, this year, adjourned to January 22 for the hearing of pending motions.

On Monday, the CJN was seen going about his normal court duties unruffled when The Nation visited the Supreme Court.

Justice Onnoghen, who led a five-man panel of the apex court, conducted proceedings in many cases from 9am when the court sat, up until 1.30pm when the court rose for the reconstitution of its panel.

When the court later resumed around 2pm, the CJN was no longer part of the panel. The new panel was head by Justice Musa Dattijo Muhammed.

One of the cases heard by the panel led by the CJN was an interlocutory appeal filed by former Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives Emeka Ihedioha.

Also yesterday, the National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN) in Abuja restated its earlier order restraining the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and some others from forcing the CJN to vacate office in view of the allegation of non-disclosure of assets made against him.

Also to be affected by the order are other defendants in a suit by Peter Abang. They are: The Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB), the National Judicial Council (NJC), the Federal Judicial Service Commission (FJSC), the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and the Senate President.

Justice Sanusi Kado had, in an ex-parte ruling on January 14, this year, made similar order and equally halted the scheduled trial of the CJN before the CCT on charges of non-declaration of assets.

The judge restrained the defendants in the suit from attempting to force the CJN out of office pending the hearing and determination of the plaintiff's motion for interlocutory injunction.

Justice Kado said the orders were necessary to avert a threat and constitutional breaches regarding the position of the CJN as the number one judicial officer of the country.

When the case was called yesterday, plaintiff's lawyer, James Igwe (SAN), told the court that some of the defendants have been served, including the CCT Chairman, who was said to have directed his Secretary to accept service on his behalf.

Igwe however applied for the court's permission to serve the CCT Chairman through substituted means, which the judge granted.

The judge reminded parties that the orders made on January 14 still subsist and adjourned to January 30 for report of service.

Effective reforms underway in police, says Acting IG

Posted: 22 Jan 2019 06:39 AM PST

Mohammed Abubakar Adamu
COMPREHENSIVE reforms and reorganisation of the Police, including an overhaul of police Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and the disbandment of some special units have already begun, Acting Inspector General of Police Mohammed Abubakar Adamu has said.

He also said the police would work very closely with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to tackle thuggery and other electoral offences as part of strategies to ensure highly credible elections.

At his inaugural conference with the top echelon of the NPF, including states' Commissioners of Police at Force Headquarters in Abuja yesterday, the acting IGP emphasised that police professionalism and operational competence affects the credibility of elections.

The IG said: "All states' Commissioners of Police are to galvanise their personnel and mobilise logistics towards ensuring a peaceful and credible outcome of the general elections," he said, adding that all law-abiding political actors must be secured and offenders must be punished.

"Indeed, in order to ensure that such offenders are conclusively brought to justice, the DIG FCIID has been directed to set up Special Election Investigation Teams (SEIT) that will be tasked with the exclusive functions of taking in custody and undertake a detailed investigation of all arrested electoral offenders across the country.

"The teams shall also liaise with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) towards the prompt processing of the case files of the offenders for prosecution," Adamu stated.

He presented details of the comprehensive reforms that he planned, stressing that its effects would be felt from the Force Headquarters down to the zonal and state commands across the nation.

"As promised during the handing and taking over ceremony between the immediate past Inspector General of Police and myself, a number of well-thought-out reform initiatives directed at restoring the traditional policing standards of the Force shall be vigorously pursued in all aspects of policing functions, particularly in the operations; intelligence; investigation; training; science, technology and innovation (STD); and monitoring and evaluation within the Force.

"This is in cognisance of the fact that our responsibility as a Police Force is to operate within extant rules and best international policing practices. It also imposes on us the obligation of respecting, protecting and advancing the rights of all citizens of this country, regardless of their socio-economic status.

"Furthermore, public acceptance of the police under a democratic setting is not influenced exclusively by the number of crimes that are solved but by the manner, such are attained. Since no Police Force ever succeeds by alienating its citizens, we are firmly resolved that, under my watch, policing will be citizens-centred, rules-driven, and accountability-guided.

"Towards this end, a comprehensive reform, both in terms of ethics, mode of operation, nomenclature and orientation, function delineation, command and control, weaponry, and accountability mechanism, will be undertaken in SARS.

"This is with a view to giving full, clear, measurable and accountable intervention to the Presidential Directives on reform and reorientation of the unit as recently handed down to the Force leadership.

"A reorganisation proposal to this effect is being currently studied, preparatory to its being implemented.

"At the end, a protocol that will document the outcome of the reform shall be developed; the protocol shall become the Standard Operating Procedure of the unit, which will be engaged for performance evaluation in aid of accountability process and disciplinary concerns.

"This initiative will be undertaken in close collaboration with the Presidency, Office of the National Security Adviser, Ministry of Interior, Police Service Commission and Human Rights Groups, Development Partners and other strategic stakeholders.

"The proposed re-organisation will produce a new Special Anti-Robbery Unit, which will be professional enough to protect the citizens in their line of duty, but uniquely potent enough to respond to any major weapon-related organised crimes in the swiftest and most ethical manner.

"While this initiative is being perfected, the operations of SARS, which is currently centralised at the Force Headquarters, is hereby decentralised. Consequently, with immediate effect, the Commissioner of Police in each of the 36 Police Commands and the FCT is to assume full command and control authority.

Never ask this 5 questions in a job interview

Posted: 22 Jan 2019 06:00 AM PST

If you are going for a job interview anytime soon, read this.
When it comes to job interviews, there is nothing worse than having no question to ask as a job applicant at the end of the interview.

The hiring manager believes you definitely want to know something about the company and the job you apply for and that's why you're to ask some questions.

However, asking wrong questions could cripple your chances of getting the job. In fact, asking inappropriate questions in a job interview is worse than asking nothing at all.

We have already covered some brilliant questions you can ask when the hiring manager throws the opportunity at you, but there are some questions you should never ask in a job interview. Check them out.

1.      What does your company do?

Seriously? Do you think asking a question like this will make the hiring manager gets excited to talk about the company or what? Questions like this only send make the employers eyes rolling.

What this means to a lot of employer is that you're not brilliant enough to ask a meaningful question, and more importantly, you failed to do your research about the company before the interview.

2.      How well did I do?

You want to know how well the interview went and you expect the hiring manager to immediately tell you how well you performed. Nah, it's not done. That question as a matter of fact sounds dumb and no matter how much rapport you have with the interview, don't ever ask this question.

Instead of asking a questions that'll make you look stupid in front of your prospective employers, ask them when you can expect to hear from them and send a follow-up email, thanking them for their time.

3.      Did I get the job?

This is you being impatient. This question makes you appear very desperate to the hiring managers. Rather than pushing the employers to determine a matter they've not decided on, it's better to ask about the next step in the hiring process. For instance, you can ask if the organization conducts only one or multiple interviews in their recruitment process. Their response to this will give you an idea on whether you'll have a second chance or not.

4.      How long would I wait to get promoted

You're jumping the gun. Asking a question like this paints an impression that you're overhasty and not so interested in the position you applied for and you can't wait to have a better position. You'll sound better if your question comes like this: "What are the opportunities for growth at this company?

5.      What type of job benefits does this company offer?

Bringing up a question like this also shows you're hasty and you're only concerned about the benefits you'll gain from the company not the value you want to offer. If you have to ask this question, wait till you are offered the job before asking for the benefits that comes with it.

1. Spending without saving

Try to imbibe the saving culture and also be wise with your spending. Avoid spending anyhow because it will definitely affect your finances negatively.

2. Having no financial goals

If you have no financial goals you are very likely to be in the same place financially for a very long period.

You need to set the financial goals you want to achieve. Where do you see yourself in the future financially? How much do you want to save and have in your bank account? Write down financial goals and follow through.

3. Not seeking financial advice

If you think you don't need financial advice from professional, then you are making a big mistake.

You really cannot know all about handling everything that entails money and finance, which is why you need to seek the help of a financial advisor to help you make good financial decisions.

If you can't afford a financial advisor, talk to someone who has an idea about the financial world.

5. Having no retirement plan

You can't keep living life without planning for your old age. You need to plan for your retirement very early to avoid problems in your old age. As you try to make ends meet and achieve your financial goals also put retirement plans into the equation.

What do you do with an ex that just won't go away?

Posted: 22 Jan 2019 05:00 AM PST

For everyone who has an ex who doesn't want to accept that it's over.
Maybe not many people have experienced it, but having an ex who simply won't let go is a worrisome relationship reality.

Breaking up and trying to restart with someone else is already difficult enough, having a partner who does not want to accept that it's over is an added stress no one needs. Yet, people have had to deal with this struggle.

If you ever find yourself stuck with the problem of an ex who just refuses to get out of the picture, here are four sure tips for you to overcome the dilemma.

1. Use that block button

After a breakup many times, people have been known to avoid the other person in order to get the required space to truly move on. But in a crazy situation with an ex that refuses to let go, it is not enough to cut off face-to-face contact, you have to use that block button.

Get rid of them on all your social media channels and block them from sending an email for good measure. It is one step to remaining blissfully oblivious of whatever rant or emotional purge or trash they may have to say on social media.

2. Family and friends

Some exes have a good rapport with your family and friends due to the closeness you fostered between them when the going was good. And, really, there's no problem with that… until this stage.

At the point where you break up with someone and they refuse to get out of your life, you need to have your family side with you. If their hovering annoys you, you should get your family and friends to side with you. No contact from anyone.

3. A frank talk

Sometimes, closure is what is needed. So do them a favour of having a sit down to reiterate again that you meant it when you said you were no longer interested in the relationship.

Give reasons why, and be very firm about it. Don't be ambiguous in any way, you don't want to have them thinking a second chance might be on the horizon.

Remind them of why it didn't work and encourage them to move on.

4. Ignore

You could also explore the 'ignore' option. Don't give them the satisfaction of a response or reaction no matter what they say, do or how they move to spite you or get your attention.

Pretending that they are dead [to you, at least] could be the way to get them off your back and out of your life.

5. Do not guilt trip yourself into taking them back

When you want to break up with someone, ensure to think about it well. And when you do, try all you can to ensure that you move on from the situation for real. Whether or not breaking up with your ex was a mistake or the right thing to do, choking yourself with guilt will do neither of you any good.

Obasanjo gets tutorial on Tradermoni

Posted: 22 Jan 2019 04:33 AM PST

Olusegun Obasanjo
The presidency has described as either "ignorance or mischief'', Chief Olusegun Obasanjo's attack on `TraderMoni', the microcredit scheme of the federal government.

"It is either that the former leader is ignorant of the true workings of Trader Moni and the role of the Vice President in its implementation or perhaps he is on a mischievous mission, " Mr Laolu Akande, a senior special aide to the Vice President on media and publicity, said in a rejoinder.

Obasanjo had insinuated the Vice President Yemi Osinbajo was distributing N10,000 to buy votes an allegation vividly captured in his letter as follows:

"The other day, the Vice-President of Nigeria, Professor Yemi Osinbajo – a learned man, an enlightened person in all parameters – was seen at various markets in Lagos State and Abuja distributing N10,000 each to market women. What an absurdity! It was indeed an obscene display of executive recklessness and abuse of office. Pray, where did the money come from? Was it budgeted for in the appropriation law? In more civilised nations, Osinbajo would have been impeached and prosecuted for gutting our collective treasury."

"What an act by a Senior Advocate of Nigeria lawyer, number 2 man in the Executive hierarchy; and what is more, a pastor of one of the Christian movements led by a revered, respected and upright church leader, Pastor E. A. Adeboye. Osinbajo must have gone for, "if you can't beat them, join them". A great pity indeed and which makes people ask the questions, "Any hope?" Yes, for me, there is hope. Osinbajo has shown the human weakness and proved the saying that the corruption of the best is the worst form of corruption. His explanation that it was their government programme can only be construed to be very shallow and lopsided, if not an outrightly idiotic programme.

"Traders in rural and sub-urban areas of Nigeria are many more than those in urban areas and they are much poorer than traders in Lagos, Abuja and other cities. They need more attention and greater help. Are they to be confined to the heap of perpetual poverty? What of those who are not traders? They are not entitled to hand-out and they can languish in penury? And what about millions who have lost their jobs in the last three and a half years? The timing is also suspect. Those who criticise the action are called evil but they are not evil as they know what they are doing and saying, and they love Nigeria and Nigerians not less than the likes of Osinbajo. They are not devils incarnate; they are patriots.

"What is the connection between taking the number of PVC (Permanent Voters Card) of the recipient of the N10,000 doled out to 'traders' and the forthcoming election? There is something sinister about it, and Professor Osinbajo, of all people, should know that. With the collusion of the INEC officials and card readers not made to work, anybody quoting the PVC number may be allowed to vote as the revised Electoral Bill was not signed. And if that happens all over the country, it will be massive rigging indeed. The Chairman of INEC must stand firm and carry out his duties with competence and unbending neutrality. Card readers must be used without fail and accreditation must be completed and number ascertained and made public before voting commences as was done in 2015."

In his response to the allegation, Laolu said: "It is surprising but complete misunderstanding of the workings of TraderMoni, that is if we assume there is no mischief intended."

"Attacks such as this on a scheme that benefits the masses of our people is a direct attack on the people and this kind of conduct does not reflect very well on a former president but is only self-denigrating and of no public value".

Hereunder is the full statement of Laolu, titled, "Obasanjo's attack on TraderMoni reflects either his ignorance or mischief – Presidency''

The statement purportedly attributed to former president Olusegun Obasanjo regarding Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, and the Federal Government's TraderMoni microcredit scheme if, indeed true and accurate, is most unfortunate, according to the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media & Publicity, Mr Laolu Akande.

While responding to media inquiries regarding the former president's comments over the weekend, Akande noted that "it is either that the former leader is ignorant of the true workings of Trader Moni and the role of the Vice President in its implementation or perhaps he is on a mischievous mission."

According to Akande, the former President has demonstrated "a surprising but complete misunderstanding of the workings of TraderMoni, that is if we assume there is no mischief intended. "

Firstly, the Vice President does not personally distribute money during his visits to the markets. He goes there to assess the progress of the implementation and to create awareness for a programme designed to meet the financing need of 2 million petty traders across the country in the first instance.

Secondly, while one will not bother to further address the issue of timing of the implementation since such issues are now known to be political posturing, it is important to note that TraderMoni is being actively implemented across all states of the federation and the FCT. It is not only Lagos and Abuja as was insinuated.

These petty traders at the bottom of the economic ladder, with an inventory often less than N5,000, are beneficiaries of the TraderMoni scheme which provides N10,000 collateral/interest-free loans to them, the empowerment that improves their small businesses, their families, while also contributing significantly to the economy.

Thirdly, in what is certainly a curious comment, the former President has also been quoted as describing the TraderMoni scheme as idiotic. To label such people-friendly scheme as idiotic is not only an absurdity, it is also an affront to the sensibilities of these hard working Nigerians, the beneficiaries of the micro-credit scheme.

For emphasis, the Bank of Industry implements the Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme, GEEP, one part of our Social Investment Programme. Enumeration Agents have been engaged to visit the markets and other points where petty traders are found to confirm that they are traders and also take their biometric information for recording purposes. After the enumeration, the N10,000 collateral free loans are then disbursed electronically through the petty traders' phones.

TraderMoni is designed to meet the needs of the larger population of petty traders at the bottom of the pyramid who do not meet the more stringent criteria of BVN, bank accounts, market associations, cooperatives, required for bigger Market Moni loans.

Under GEEP – which has MarketMoni, FarmerMoni and TraderMoni, at least 1.5 million Nigerians are already beneficiaries of the three-pronged approach of GEEP, while N-Power has created jobs for 500,000 young Nigerians graduates, besides non-graduates. Also, almost 300,000 Nigerians have benefitted from the Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT), which is given to the poorest and most vulnerable among us, and over 9.2 million school pupils are being fed a free meal daily in 26 states under the Home Grown School Feeding Programme.

It bears repetition that higher economic growth potentials are associated with lower income inequality. This makes a most overwhelming case for welfare payments like the social investment schemes like the TraderMoni/MarketMoni schemes. Such a micro-credit scheme provides a higher rate of inclusion into the financial bracket and is crucial in lifting hardworking people out of poverty as has been the case in other countries like India and Brazil.

Fourthly, the former president also rehashed discredited claims suggesting that TraderMoni beneficiaries were required to tender their PVCs, and questioned the timing of the implementation.

Let me, therefore, the state again that beneficiaries of TraderMoni are not required to show their Personal Voters Cards (PVCs) or any document indicating their political affiliations to qualify for the loans. This is why the enumeration is done in the open markets and wherever the traders ply their trade. This issue has been addressed several times by the Presidency in the public space. Therefore the former president's alleged comments smirk of outright mischief as it regurgitates blatant falsehood.

Equally, if the former president had conducted a simple act of diligence, he would have found that the National Assembly had approved this programmes and budgeted for them duly.

When President Muhammadu Buhari came into office, one of the major hinges of this administration was to uplift the common man out of poverty and ensure the welfare of ordinary Nigerians. TraderMoni is one of such schemes conceived in 2016 under the Social Investment Programme of this administration.

Being a former president, Chief Obasanjo ordinarily should appreciate the impact of such far-reaching social investment schemes, which has provided what is now the largest social safety net for millions of Nigerians and is unprecedented in the nation's history.

Again, the former president's attack on TraderMoni and the person of the Vice President is an indicator that he may be wittingly or unwittingly playing to the sinister script of the opposition party to spread falsehood and attack the social investment programmes of the Buhari administration, which champions such impactful schemes, and which is now attracting the praise and commendation of Nigerians everywhere.

It is pertinent to state that the false allegations against TraderMoni raised again by the former president is sadly a rehash of baseless claims previously made by leading chieftains of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, whose record of profligacy, corruption and mismanagement clearly show it has no agenda to uplift the common man or improve the lives of Nigerians.

Finally, attacks such as this on a scheme that benefits the masses of our people is a direct attack on the people and this kind of conduct does not reflect very well on a former president but is only self-denigrating and of no public value. As is already now obvious, the generality of the Nigerian people will not only reject that attack but will also condemn its source. We, therefore, urge the former president to be far more circumspect and more public-spirited in his utterances going forward.

Nigeria's total telecommunications solutions provider, Globacom, has been adjudged the Telecommunications Company of the Year for the second consecutive year at the prestigious Independent Awards. This year's event was held in Lagos on Thursday.

The awards were instituted to celebrate outstanding brands and the visions that birthed them. They are equally for the celebration of individuals who have made outstanding contributions in commerce and industry as well as government officials whose policies and programmes have had positive impacts on their jurisdictions.

Managing Editor and Editor-in-Chief of Independent Newspapers Limited, Mr. Ade Ogidan, disclosed that the organisation carefully selected the brands and individuals who got the awards, and added that Globacom won the award for being "the first telecommunications company in Nigeria to cover the 36 states of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory FCT with 4G LTE network services".

According to him, apart from the 4G LTE coverage, "other factors which gave Globacom the prestigious award were the company's innovative and hugely successful products,  OGA SIM, which guarantees quality data services to the subscribers at very low rate, and GLO YAKATA, which offers subscribers 2,200 percent bonus on every recharge".

Globacom's Head, Enterprise Sales, Mr. Eric Uwaoma, said at the ceremony that awards "such as this are a call for more commitment to the service of the people, and I want to assure all that Globacom will continue to delight its subscribers with world-class services and seamless telecommunications solutions".

Border wall: U.S. Senate succumbs to Trump’s demand

Posted: 22 Jan 2019 03:42 AM PST

Donald Trump
The U.S. President Donald Trump's demand for the appropriation of funds for the construction of a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border seems to have seen the light of day as Senate Appropriations Committee has unveiled legislation that will provide $5.7 billion for the construction of the wall.
Also appropriated is a fund that will see the federal government run its activities through Sept. 30.
The 1,301-page bill is the latest bid for a breakthrough that would end the partial government shutdown that has dragged on for about a month.
However, it is doubtful the legislation will reach the usual 60-vote threshold needed for bills to advance in the Senate.
The bill is in line with President Trump's offer, announced over the weekend, to extend temporary protections for three years for immigrants brought to the U.S. illegally as children and those escaping disaster zones, in exchange for wall funding.
Democrats said that the proposal for a three-year extension didn't go nearly far enough and that Trump was using as leverage programs that he had targeted.
Meanwhile, some critics on the right, including conservative commentator Ann Coulter, accused Trump of offering "amnesty."
Despite the opposition to Trump's proposal on both sides of the aisle, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., announced Saturday he would move to bring legislation to the floor "this week."
"With bipartisan cooperation, the Senate can send a bill to the House quickly so that they can take action as well.
"The situation for furloughed employees isn't getting any brighter and the crisis at the border isn't improved by show votes. But the President's plan is a path toward addressing both issues quickly," McConnell said.
The Senate bill also provides $12.7 billion in supplemental disaster relief for victims of last year's hurricanes in the southeastern U.S. and wildfires in California, among other events.
It also provides funding for nine of the 15 Cabinet-level departments — including Agriculture, Homeland Security, State, Transportation, Interior and Justice — that have not been funded since the partial shutdown began Dec. 22.
Both houses of Congress are scheduled to be back in session Tuesday, but senators who will be given 24 hours' notice ahead of any vote, have yet to be recalled to Washington.
House Democrats, for their part, plan to push ahead with votes on their own legislation to re-open the government and add $1 billion for border security including 75 more immigration judges and infrastructure improvements, but no funding for the wall.
The office of Senate Minority leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., reiterated Monday that Democrats were unwilling to negotiate any border security funding until Trump re-opens the government.
"Nothing has changed with the latest Republican offer," said Schumer spokesman Justin Goodman. "President Trump and Senate Republicans are still saying: 'Support my plan or the government stays shut.' That isn't a compromise or a negotiation — it's simply more hostage taking."
Meanwhile, the president took rhetorical shots at House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., on Twitter.
"If Nancy Pelosi thinks that Walls are 'immoral,' why isn't she requesting that we take down all of the existing Walls between the U.S. and Mexico," he wrote Monday. "Let millions of unchecked 'strangers' just flow into the U.S."
Trump later tweeted: "Democrats are kidding themselves (they don't really believe it!), if they say you can stop Crime, Drugs, Human Trafficking and Caravans without a Wall or Steel Barrier.
"Stop playing games and give America the Security it deserves. A Humanitarian Crisis!"
