Yinka Ayefele - I know I’ll still walk again

Posted: 29 Jan 2019 12:30 AM PST

Yinka Ayefele
Popular musician, Yinka Ayefele, in an insightful interview with Punch,  shared his experience in the music industry and spoke on life without the use of his legs, expressing hope that he will walk again.

Excerpts
As a gospel artiste, who is God to you?

God is everything to me. Who am I without God; a serial-sinner who has only received favour!

As a Christian involved in a ghastly accident that claimed your legs, did you ever feel like God failed you despite your trust in Him?

I never blamed God for the accident. What if I had died?  What if I was paralysed from head to toe? The Bible tells us to be grateful in all circumstances. I will forever be grateful to Him. What if I had found myself in a situation where I couldn't use my talent? Do you know how many people have died this year alone? Do you know how many healthy people that just slept and never woke up? I give thanks to God in all ramifications.

What do you remember about the accident?

The only lingering memory I have is that the accident was like a compass that gave my life direction.

Did you go through a phase of denial when you realised you wouldn't be able to walk again?

At a point, yes! But I'm an incurable optimist. I'm of the firm belief that nothing is impossible. I know I will still walk again. I believe that with God, all things are possible.

Did you ever imagine that your current standing and recognition in the world is where you'd be today, and are you happy with where you are in life now?

My life is work in progress. Just like I usually tell my staff, I'm also working for Ayefele. I believe that the purpose of God in my life has yet to fully manifest. When we started Fresh FM in 2015, I didn't know we would spread our tentacles to Abeokuta (Ogun State) and Ado Ekiti (Ekiti State) as fast as we did. Yet, the ministry of the radio is still spreading. My life should serve as a lesson to other people. I didn't relent; the desire to live and not become a liability to society was uppermost in my heart. However, it is not by my doing but just a special grace from God Almighty. I always tell people that if it was by diabolical means (juju), the herbalist would have come out to expose me by now. I'm God's special candidate.

Why haven't you chosen to do music collaborations with foreign artistes?

I'm not ruling out the possibility of collaborating with foreign musicians. Though I have not given it a thought, it is possible. Maybe I will think along that line now.

What do you miss about your days as a journalist?

The only thing I miss now is that I don't go to the field for investigations but I'm still fully into the profession. I have four programmes on radio weekly – two each on both Fresh 105.9 FM, Ibadan, and Fresh 107.9 FM, Abeokuta.

Tell us about establishing your radio and music house.

I started Fresh FM as an online radio about 12 years ago and it took me more than seven years to get the licence for terrestrial activities. Within three years of operation, the station snowballed into a mega station giving birth to additional ones in Abeokuta and Ado Ekiti. It is not our making but through the special grace of God and our dedicated staff. We have simply reinvented radio and given it a new meaning.

Tony Tetuila- I can’t marry two wives or have a baby mama

Posted: 29 Jan 2019 12:00 AM PST

 Tony Tetuila
One-time hit-maker, Tony Tetuila, has pledged not to marry more than one wife because of the experience he had as a child.

In a chat with Sunday Scoop, Tetuila said, "Due to my experience while growing up, I can't marry two wives or have a baby mama. If one is not careful with women, one will run into trouble. Marrying two wives means trouble. Although men cannot do without them, women are hard to manage. The moment you sleep with a woman, you've lost your respect too.

"I grew up in a polygamous home and the fact that I am alive today is by the grace of God. I was poisoned while I was little and I developed complications in my legs afterwards."

Tetuila's 16-year-marriage is blessed with three kids – two boys and a girl. "I see all my children venturing into entertainment because there are strong signs already. I have a good dancer in my house and a lovely vocalist," he said.

‘I Remain CJN’ – Justice Onnoghen Insists

Posted: 28 Jan 2019 04:46 PM PST

Justice Walter Onnoghen

Justice Walter Onnoghen, the embattled Chief Justice of Nigeria,  who was purportedly suspended by President Muhammadu Buhari last Friday, has debunked the rumour gaining traction online that he has resigned.

Onnoghen debunked the rumour in a terse statement issued on Monday by his media aide, Awassam Bassey.

He described the CJN's rumoured resignation as "fake news circulated by mischief makers."

"Mischief makers are still circulating this fake news. Once again, no truth in it whatsoever. The Hon CJN, Hon Justice Walter Samuel Nkanu Onnoghen, GCON, has not resigned," Bassey said.

The embattled CJN has been replaced by President Buhari with the next most senior Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Tanko Mohammed, as Acting CJN, Daily Post reports.

The resignation rumour came less than 24 hours to the emergency meeting summoned by the National Judicial Council to deliberate on Onnoghen's suspension and Tanko Mohammed's emergence as the Acting CJN.

The Buhari administration has since Friday, come under scathing and widespread criticism locally and from the international community for being ill-timed, coming in the eve of the imminent general elections.

2019 Presidency: INEC Removes Zakari, Other RECs From Collation Of Results

Posted: 28 Jan 2019 03:46 PM PST

Hajiya Amina Zakari

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), ahead of the 2019 elections,  excluded all its National Commissioners from the collation of presidential poll results and other strands of elections.

The commission has also decided to throw open its Situation Room to accredited observers, civil society organisations and the media.

It was gathered that neither the widely-criticised National Commissioner Amina Zakari nor any of the National Commissioners will be involved in the collation of presidential poll results.

A source told The Nation: "No National Commissioner is in charge of collation of presidential poll results. It is true that there is what is called Collation Centre but it is separate from the Collation Secretariat, which is responsible for the collation of results.

"No National Commissioner will be appointed into the Secretariat Committee. So, Hajiya Amina Zakari or any National Commissioner does not have anything to do with the collation of results."

The INEC source also stated that the commission met on Saturday and resolved to throw open its Situation Room.

"Related to the Collation Centre is our Situation Room. The international observers and other stakeholders want us to open up the Situation Room.

"The commission met on Saturday and decided that we will grant visitation rights to accredited observers, civil society organisations and the media.

"Observers might not be allowed to see all things but they can come in and out of the Situation Room. The greatest thing INEC has done with this is openness," the source added.

Recall that Zakari had been widely criticised weeks ago after she was appointed as head of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) collation centre.

Justice Onnoghen: 10 dead, retired judges on list of CJN Mohammed’s appointed election tribunal members

Posted: 28 Jan 2019 04:10 PM PST

Justice Tanko Mohammed

The names of about ten dead and retired judges made the list of the recently sworn-in 250 election tribunal members.

Lawyers in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, told Daily Independent about the inclusion of dead and retired judges in the list.

According to the newspaper, the group of concerned lawyers who declined being identified, faulted the list of the recently sworn in 250-tribunal members as parading over 10 names of dead and retired judges.

They admitted that this would not be the first time the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government has displayed this level of "cluelessness and carelessness in handling sensitive issues concerning Nigeria."

They described "a posthumous appointment of anyone for such sensitive role in the country as burying Nigeria alive."

The new acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Tanko Mohammed swore in 250 members of the election tribunals at the Supreme Court Complex in Abuja, Daily Post reports.

Recall that President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday suspended Justice Walter Onnoghen and swore in Ibrahim Tanko Mohammed as acting CJN.

Some Nigerians who have long been dead and buried have posthumously made the list.

One of the lawyers told Daily Independent that up to 10 judges in the list were dead.

He named Justice Edemekong Edemekong whose name appeared as number 58 on the list and declared that the late Justice died since 2013.

Another, Justice Chukwu, from Ebonyi State and number 53 on the list, who was formerly of the Federal High Court, is also said to have been long dead.

The lawyer's revelation also indicated that Justice Stephen Okon, a retired Chief Judge of Akwa Ibom State and Justice Okoyo Essang (number 56), a retired Justice of the High Court in Akwa Ibom State, both made the list.

The lawyers expressed concerns that if such errors could be spotted at a glance on such a sensitive list and on the first official outing of the new acting CJN, then Nigeria may be heading towards a doom.

"If dead and retired men are to sit on our election petition tribunal, then the APC-led federal government is out to drown this country and we vehemently reject a list parading dead men as members of the tribunal," they said.

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie pens endearing note to Wole Soyinka, calls him her "guiding light"

Posted: 28 Jan 2019 09:19 AM PST

It's not a lot that the path of the two authors, each renowned for writing for their generation, cross.

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie pens endearing note to Wole Soyinka
Get a load of greatness in one photo.

On Saturday, a photo of Nobel Laureate Professor Wole Soyinka posing with Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie was posted on her official Instagram account. The photo was taken by author Eghosa Imasuen.

The photo was captioned with a very personal note where Chimamanda writes about how Soyinka inspires her.

While the account is run by her nieces, this seems to be a very personal post, as she signs the end with her initials, CNA.

She says:

"You are, for me, a guiding light:

Your courage. The ease with which you inhabit your skin, speaking your mind, unburdened by apology.

Your kindness and humour.

Your utter coolness.

The urgent, terse poetry of The Man Died, the exuberance of Ake; your faith in possibility, in adventure, in progress.

Yes indeed, 'the mindless ones are neither the total sum nor the true face of humanity.'

Thank you, Prof."

So much greatness in one picture!

Relationship Anxiety: What it means; and how you can get over it

Posted: 28 Jan 2019 09:12 AM PST

When you find yourself experiencing this, what and what should you do?

Relationship Anxiety
Dating, being in a relationship and being married… all of these come with their special types of worries and concerns.
The average single person often wonders if they would find love and it they will do it at the right time they want.

The one in a relationship has thoughts on whether the relationship would last; whether it would move seamlessly and transition into a marriage. The married person also has their own concerns. They worry whether their partner would cheat, if the sex in the marriage will be good enough, if it would last till death does them part, if the marriage will be dissolved for irreconcilable differences… etc.

Relationship anxiety is the unhealthy fixation on these thoughts; the magnification of worries till it begins to stress and wear you down. It is the irrational fears that are dwelled upon and left to fester.

Many times, these anxious feelings are escalated by previous relationship disappointments, self-esteem issues, stuff you hear about failed relationships all around you, etc. So when you find yourself experiencing relationship anxiety, what and what should you do?

1.   Ask for help
It does not hurt to seek professional help. A couple's therapist does not sound like a bad idea.

2.   Communicate
Talk to your partner about it. Don't try to bottle it all in and hope to figure it all out by yourself. You just may be worsening it.

If you communicate with your partner, it shows your partner how to love you better and if he or she is really a great partner, that's more reasons why they should offer you reassurances more regularly.

3.  Pay more attention to your interests
The more productive things you have occupying your mind, the less likely you are to feel anxious, according to Psycom.

"If you are putting all of your focus on a romantic relationship, chances are you are going to feel anxious [about it]," the website says.

4.   It's really OK to be yourself
When a partner chooses to be with you despite knowing you and all of your flaws, it is actually Ok to be cool with that information and not try to second guess it.

It is fine to be yourself and do things your way without being worried that it'd make your partner fall out of love with you; or that they would find you boring and unlovable. If they say they want you with all your curves and your edges, trust them on it till they show it is not OK to trust anymore.

5.   Don't deny the unhealthy feelings
People who feel unsteady in a relationship may be tempted to avoid or distract from the issues causing problems.

According to Psycom, "avoiding is only a temporary solution, and it often ends in heated conflict. Set a standard for addressing issues head on in the relationship, even if it feels uncomfortable at first.

"If you need a third party to help foster better communication, don't hesitate to work with a counselor together or individually."

Acknowledging it is really needed to make sure that you curb those anxious thoughts before it becomes too much.

iLLBliss speaks on his upcoming 6th album, role in King of Boys and getting the respect he deserves

iLLBliss speaks on his upcoming 6th album
iLLBliss speaks on his upcoming 6th album, role in King of Boys and getting the respect he deserves

Since 2000, iLLBliss has grown his status to the upper echelons of the rap game with his streetwise indigenous sliced rhymes, uncanny album titles, and the braggadocio boss persona comparable to that of an Igbo don.

The self-dubbed Ibo Boy has endured many battles since he made his industry move with life throwing different challenges across his path, but he remains steady, five albums and a mixtape done, delving to the big screen with the movie, ''King of Boys'', and a sixth album on its way, iLLBliss stays confident reflecting on a career that he says has been full of peaks and valleys.

In this exclusive interview with Pulse, iLLBliss traces back the years, speaks on his upcoming projects and shares his thought on the rap scene.

Getting to interview iLLBliss for me was a big deal, he was one of those rappers I followed keenly as a member of the Breds in my early affinity with Nigerian hip-hop and shaking hands with him just as we got into some quick talk before the interview, this was a fulfilling moment, seeing an idol in the form that my mind had pictured.

He was a member of the rap affiliate, Da Thoroughbreds, which was a truly diverse crew of rappers made up of Tochukwu Nwosu aka Elajoe, Bright Nwagor better known as B Elect, Obiora Nwokolobiagu (Obiwon) and Tobechukwu Ejiofor aka iLLBliss and Amaka Nwosu aka Da Chief Rocka, sister to Elajoe and the first lady of the crew.

Five albums after, Dat Ibo Boy (2009) to Oga Boss (2012), Powerful (2015), illygaty:7057 (2016), illy Bomaye (2017), Illy has settled into his space and with the upcoming album illy Chapo, set to complete the illy album trilogy, he admits this is yet another indication of his consistency in the game.

How was the transition like from Thoro Breds to being a solo artist?

''First of all, we were never really a group, we were a collective of artists that just loved the same genre of music. We met up. I went to University with Obiwon, and then we finished from UNN and I came to Lagos and I met Elajoe, Elajoe's sister, Amaka and B-Elect.

We just decided to collectively put our efforts together and make music as a crew and then launch off individually.

Making the decision, I had always wanted to be a solo artist but I also felt I could also drive the crew part, so when it was time for me, it wasn't tough, it was a natural progression for me.''

How has iLLBliss managed to maintain being the only remaining visible member of the team?
''That wasn't the intention, till today I regret that I don't have my entire squad in the business, Elajoe is putting out his project, finally, and he will tell you that I am always on his case, I be like, 'Ela, you had that Stylee shine, you had it before any of us, that big opportunity,' but Ela is a perfectionist.

I feel lonely sometimes but I got used to it, I am a very self-sufficient person, I am like 10 guys in one, I push myself, I put out records and I just keep it going but I am in touch with all of them.

B-Elect schooled me on what I eventually became, he used to give me tapes, introduced me to DJ Premier, all the records that would mould me and helped my lyricism was by B Elect.''

Talk us through your journey from the start, the whole movement from Enugu down to Lagos.

'I was born in Coal City, Enugu, I grew up there, all my schooling there, they call it 042 because of the phone code.

In UNN, I started rapping, I started rhyming over instrumentals, first of all, then I decided it was time to start making my own records. Then when I graduated, I came to Lagos for my Youth Service, I tell people, your journey in Lagos depends on how you came in, some came in by flight, their family come pick them up, I came on a night bus, straight from Ifesinachi, got on the bus and dropped off at Berger.

It was raining, Saturday morning, I was trying to find the NYSC camp at Ipaja and I saw like 3,000 people moving at the same time, culture shock cause where I was coming from in Enugu, it's a small town and its quiet. This was around 2003/04, so I came in and just headed to the camp and blended in and from there started looking for a job in Lagos, trying to settle in and eventually got a job as a banker.

I kept making the music on the side, but I could never really come all out to make it cause banking has its requirements, I don't think its that rigid now but back in the days, it was a taboo to do anything in that space, but weekends if I didn't have any training, I just go to the studio and record.

In the mid-2000s the Bred were rumoured to be working on a project, ''Fela Was Hip-hop'', one that was never released,

''Thoro Breds helped me a lot at that point,'' he explains, ''because I had my job and I had the help of my crew and we recorded a lot of music together, we even had an album that never dropped.

From there, I continued with my banking life, I ran through four banks, I left banking as an assistant manager, my life is in chapters. A lot of people know me from couple years back, some people think I am a new artist.

The last bank I worked for collapsed, I tried to get another bank job, I was getting shortchanged because I was coming from a distressed bank, so all the other banks would give you three steps below cos they knew you needed to get in, so I just said Ok, lemme leave the country for a while, So I moved to the UK, which led to another segment of life, I moved back like 2.5/3 years later and the game had changed and I came back as ill Bliss.

I had planned to just stay for 2 months and be back, two months became almost three years, it was trying, having to not go there as a student, having to do menial jobs, like a lot of things, don't move me because I have seen lack and I have had a lot.

I had all my savings stupidly invested in the bank shares, which was something we were encouraged to do, so I put all my money running to millions because I was saving to go to school, to go do my masters in the UK, I had this lofty plan but it just quite never happened.

Banking taught me a lot though, I moved a lot, I went from Human resources to Customer Care, Fund Transfer, Credit, Lending, Commercial Banking, Oil and Gas, I did everything, the only thing I never did was Teller.

How were you mentally at this time?
'My heart was always in the music, at a point I had four jobs, I was a Tunnel guard at the Arsenal stadium, Highbury, that is how I became a gunner, like I am a proper authentic gunner, we are the ones that go and clean the dressing room, go and cut the grass at Highbury, we did the transition into the Emirates we have community works.

I met so many people from that gathering, but I always made the music, I stayed focused on the music, I knew I was going to go back to Nigeria and sort out my career again, so I had producers in Nigeria, because production in the UK was expensive especially for the kind of music I was making, BoomBap, which was underground, so I always needed specialist producers.

I had a producer Jonah D Monarch and like three of them, they used to send me beats and I would take it to the studio, a sound engineer called Ian Carter, at some place in Woodgreen, I would take a train from West London to his studio which was in a basement.

He just basically knew how to engineer my music and I would come in and pay for like a 3-4 hours session and would bang out like nine songs and Ian would be like ''Tobe, you guys are on fire, it takes me and my band like two weeks to make a song'', so that is what England made me become, I recorded load of songs because I was by myself and we became really cool friends and that is how I continued to make music while in England.''

On 'It is God', You have always had this conscious mien with songs like 'A Different Kind of War' and 'National Cake', is this a direction you would encourage rappers to talk about more?

'We must reflect the times, our music must reflect the times, these are words that resonate in my head, what is the essence of being a communicator and affecting the culture if you cant reflect the times through your music?

Rappers are scared, rappers want to be singers, rappers want to be pop, rappers want to make money, rappers want to embrace hits.

The depth, the consciousness, the introspection, every single thing that makes you a rapper is missing today minus albums like Falz's Moral Instruction, which is a modern day classic as far as I am concerned.

I think the rappers need to readjust the position they play in the business, we are as scholars, I feel like a lot of rappers don't even understand what power they have.

Up until last year, between MI, Loose Kaynon, A-Q and Blaqbonez, they restored some kind of sanity to rap music. I like to call it rap music because once you go in that hip-hop direction, it starts to become a problem because everybody shows up and have a way to define things.

The hip-hop culture is overtly revolving, so I would rather just say I am a rapper to be more specific.

Rappers need to go in that direction because society is looking at us, we are the ones that are edgy, the ones that are bold to say it as it is, the singers are not wired that way.

Imagine if we had a lot of us rappers just putting out records about the times, so because we are not doing enough of that, because everybody is in that Lamba tunnel.

Social media recently went on a #10years challenge craze, if we are to do same for the rap game, what really has changed?
'At one particular sitting, I met Terry Tha Rapman, Modenine, OD, SixFootPlus, we were so passionate, we just wanted to get the records out, then we were like aliens, there was no industry for rap, we were looked as like the mad ones, the leftists and we were very puritanical the way we approached the music, very militant, message-driven, punchlines and the intelligence of the music, we didn't know so much about the business side of the music.

But there was this comrade spirit, we were like brothers, Modenine would go to Abuja, he had a radio job then and take all our records and played, I sold his ''Malcolm IX'' at one banking exhibition we had, that's missing.

Now there is a lot of posturing, everybody claiming boss, I am not seeing the unity anymore.

I see a lot of individual amazing talents that have gone ahead to become big but I don't see anybody doing it for the next person, there is a lot of competition, quiet competition, I guess that is what comes when the money hits the table, then we didn't have much money.''

But a lot of you guys have been accused of not supporting the younger cats?
x'I opened the doors for Phyno and he went ahead to become so massive in the game now he is opening doors for people.

I am still looking for new talents that I can take support and nurture and support, probably not sign on like a typical label structure, but I agree a lot of rappers in my generation are guilty, just trying to make music on their own, but also realise that a lot of them also didn't make a lot of money, so how they were supposed to have that structure.

They were fighting not to drown, so how are they going to put people on, maybe because I came from that banking background, I had a more holistic approach.

I have always said to myself, you have to run this like a team. I put Chidinma on, put Phyno on, partnered with Clarence Peters, flipped the business and I want to do that again because as far as I am concerned this is all past glory but in doing all of that I needed to stabilize myself musically because in doing all of these partnerships, sometimes you destabilize from the music. So I just needed to be able to be consistent with the music then I will get back into mentorship.''

Even though he belongs to the old generation of heads naming his early influences to include the likes of Nas, Jay Z and Dre, Illy has grown with age, diversifying his craft and while he still embodies his signature boss persona in the music, he has also been one to embrace collaborations and he explains,

''First and foremost, I have always been a child of change. I have always morphed, all the guys that I have looked up to are multi-platinum artists; Jay, Nas, Biggie, Dre, you name it, all the people that helped me mould my personality, even Rick Ross in modern times, all of them are dynamic acts.

They have always measured their trends and that is what informed my decisions when I make records like 'Alhaji' with Runtown, 'Jawonlaya' with Eazi and Reekado, if I wasn't supportive of them, I just don't go to them, I have to be a fan of their music before we can collaborate.''

You have done records with Terry G, done Trap records, do you see trends before they happen?
''I am just a fan of music, a fan of urban music.

I kind of tap into a thing that will work. I remember when I went to Terry G to collaborate, Terry started to make a hip-hop beat for me, I told him, No, I need a club record.

I just collaborate and inject myself into that person's energy. But never lose yourself as you try to collaborate.''

Talking about mentorship, what's happening with the Goretti Company?

''The Goretti Company has been quiet, to be honest, we moved into content, started creating for advertising agencies and we put a pause button on signing talents because you also need to realise that music doesn't come cheap anymore.

If you are putting talent on, you need a war chest. I am taking my time, I don't want to sign artists that tomorrow you have record labels vs artists situation, I never want that.''

Over a decade long career in the game, do you think iLLBliss gets the respect he deserves?
''Can I be honest with you guys? I am the number one underdog in this business. I have never gotten the respect that I deserve, never, sometimes it makes you sad, sometimes it makes you wonder what you have to do, sometimes you are like 'my records are dope', 'the videos are fly', 'I am consistent', what's the problem?

Every time I go back into the studio, I go back like that is my debut album, so I just told myself, you are a King man, so you continue to move the way kings move and never be bothered about where you are placed.

I have a lane and I am on that lane, I have been on that lane and I can't see too many cars on that lane, sorta I feel like I own all the cars on that lane, so I have just decided how I want to move artistically and I stay there, I don't come to your mind readily when it comes to popular Nigerian music, but you know deep down that if you back at the discography, if you look at impact, you would know that Illy has been here for a minute and Illy has been freaking consistent.

Illy Chapo is my sixth album and it is dropping this year, how many rappers have six albums?''

How have you kept the inspiration going?

''God. It's God, I don't know how it's done, I just know that I wake up and I want to put out a new EP, new project, I just know I am not done with the music that God put in me.

I am working harder than artists that just got into the game, with each release I put in more work, I just feel like this is who I am and it's all going to add up.''

Your albums have always been praised sonically, what is your album creating process like?

''I make all the serious songs first, all the thought-provoking and introspective, politically charged, personal records.

I put a lot of my personal records into the music. Let me tell you about the first song on my next album, 'Glory', (He raps a few lines)... That's what I am, these are my lines, this is me, damn, I don't get the credit I deserve [Laughs]

People have come at me from different angles, 'Oh he can't make commercial records, oh he is not such a lyricist, he doesn't have punchlines, oh, he just knows how to choose beats, I have heard everything, then on the other side, I have also heard great things.

The game changed and became dialectical, I became dialectical. I went back to the Eastern sounds, I dropped records like 'Bank Alert', 'Chuwku Agozi gogi', '40-foot containers', I have out in all I can, I do the records for women, for kids not to get stuck on social media, its how it comes to me.

You just talked about the first song off your next album, which is a personal record, I don't know if this is an intentional plot but the first song off your last album, 'Illy Bomaye' was also a personal record where you talked about your daughter?

'It was intense. My wife and I were childless for eight years and then God just blessed us at a point when we didn't even know what to do next, we didn't know what the problem was, we were just optimistic and prayerful and I felt how else was I going to drop the album, this has to be me saying thank you, so I recorded my daughters cries, sampled it on the record.

That is me. A lot of my friend says, I have never made a 'Shaku Shaku' record, and I am such a Shaku Shaku fan, but I won't make a shaku shaku record, it has nothing to do with pulling down the genre, it just has to do with you can't be everything.''

How was that eight-year waiting period like for you?

''I was sad a lot of times, you know when you feel like God just left you, you were watching kids grow, so we put all that love into kids around us. We have a lovely family, not a second of pressure.

Her name is Sochikaima, it means its only our God we know.

Let's talk about your role in the movie ''King of Boys'', how was that like for you?
'So I spent a lot of time watching Juice, Menace to the society, Boys in the hood, Above the rim, all the films that successful rap artists were part of.

Kemi [Adetiba] called me in September 2017 that she had a role for me, I said I wasn't doing, I didn't want to act cos I was scared, I have seen a lot of people try to make that transition from music to television and when it fails the media will crucify you.

She sent me the script, I didn't read it, I left it in my box.

I just lost touch with Kemi, so January 2018, I saw King of Boys PDF file and I was like let me even look at this and I read the first five pages and I called her immediately like have you done the film, she said 'No' and I was like thank God, I am joining.''

What changed?

'The story, I liked the story, I liked the character, I needed a character that I would ease into and Kemi would tell me my 'Bank Alert' video helped her develop this Malay guy, then I heard Reminisce was on set, if there is any rapper I am going to do a joint album with, that is Reminisce. ''

Why?
'Our thinking, the way we envision rap, he is so passionate and such a hip-hop artist, such a lover of the culture and he is an authentic dude. He can flip it and still keep it real.''

How challenging was it for you?

''Kemi made us relax, she just eased us into our roles, she kinda of broke that the barriers of are we going to do well?

I heard Reminisce spazzed out the first time he saw Sola Shobowale on set, he was like this is a set-up, but Kemi will come and stand next to us and directed us well. She is also a hip-hop person, so she understands us.''

Did you envisage your first movie to be this successful?

''It's crazy, when I open my inbox, it's a whole different set of people, These are not hip-hop fans, just messages from people who had seen the movie, then I had people stalking me because I killed Reminisce, so I am like, you guys take this thing seriously though.

I took my parents to watch it and they literally were in tears, everybody was proud.

xI have about 16-20 scripts now, they are all Odogu Malay archetype, they want to put me in that box, No, I want dynamism. Thank God for King of Boys.''

Back to the music, It's 2019, what do you have in store?

'I finished an album last year, it was supposed to come out last year but I held it back, I just didn't feel the timing was right.

I started working in May, the first single was '40 feet containers', the second single was 'Is it your money' ft Dice Ailes, it's 11 songs, again its premium ill Bliss.

It's growth, my album reflects my status. 'It is God' is on the album, there is 'Remember Me' ft Johnny Drille, 'Fever' ft Yemi Alade, 'Superman' features Niniola and the rest I did it myself.

The track-listing will hit everywhere soon. I am just looking for the elections to be done with, then I roll out.

There are also couple EPs I have finalised, I am always looking out for the gems, the producers, so I have an EP called IllyZilla, it's down with TeckZilla, its coming in a week, just 6 songs entirely produced by Tec.

xI have another EP with a kid called Black Intelligence, we have five songs done, mixed and mastered. Then Bigfoot and I have our EP coming towards the latter part of the year, so its back to back materials this year.

They say we should save rap, they say SA came and took it, so we doing our quota.

*Cuts in*... Do you agree?
'I have no views on that [Laughs], I just know that their climates are totally different.

In Nigeria, you have a rap show and you find a Kizz Daniel performing, its a mismatch, I am not here to talk about it, just do my part, shout out to Show Dem Camp who continue to grow their fan base and it keeps expanding.

Rap is ministry, that is what people don't understand, it's a calling, a sacrifice. Rap is not the number one genre in Nigerian, you have to work and find your fanbase, feed your fanbase, before the corporates can look at it.

What are the numbers? so if we don't develop the numbers and take it to them, we are just going to be joking, chasing our tail and blaming them all the time, meanwhile, they have the business and the balance sheet to protect.''

The titles of your albums seem to personalize your character, From 'Dat Ibo Boy', 'Oga Boss', 'Illy Gatti', why is that?

''Absolutely a reflection of my mindstate at each time, For Illy Chapo, you know El Chapo is the criminal that you can't put in a box, so I am still fluid.''

Of all your albums released so far, which is your favourite?
''Oga Boss''

Why?

''Oga Boss has some records. I had not made music for like 2-3 years, so eventually when Oga Boss came out, that is the advent of Phyno, we made 'Anam Achikwanu', that is the album that 'Emi ni Baller' with Chidinma.

There are some songs there that are just personal.''

How do you feel about Illy Bomaye as an album?

''I feel I didn't promote it, I feel I should have done more. That was me just saying I would do an EP of like four songs, then I stretch it to nine songs and made it an album.

I loved the production, Praiz came through, the intro was a huge moment for me, I love the album and I have taken my learnings from the album.''

Are you still working with Suspekt?

''He mixes all my records, he produces every now and then, he is too busy doing a lot of work on Television, he has found the money, he is sitting on it. He has always mixed my album.''

How have you been able to keep that circle, you Suspekt and Clarence?
'We came from zero, so I don't even know how to stunt for them they were like 'look at you, now you Odogwu Malay shooting people.'

The whole office went to the Cinema, they were making so much noise, they were just so happy, we look out for ourselves and we don't give a flying f*** about the music industry, we don't care, we have seen people come and go, but our friendship stays.''

From changing Chidinma's sound with her feature on 'Emi Ni Baller' to introducing Kel with a guest verse on 'U Go Wound' we asked the man if the artists he has supported on their come-up appreciate his efforts?

''I know about Phyno. He knows. We speak all the time, we compare notes all the time.

About the rest of the people, I really couldn't be bothered, like to be very honest, our relationships are in good places but whether they appreciate it or not, they know it, they know how those hits came, 'Emi Ni Baller' was my record, I converted it to a Chidinma record and asked Suspekt to write the verse, so I am tweaking it, Clarence is tweaking it visually, Suspekt is tweaking it sonically, I'm coming up with the ideas, direction, swag.

Kel, I put her on a record on Clarence's request because he was trying to build his Capital team then.

Somebody told me something though, he said ''Illy, you are like the guy that cooked for a party and after the party, everybody eat so well, drank so well and they come to you and say, man, the food was amazing, and you didn't even know because you didn't keep a morsel for yourself and I decided I was just going to be all about ill Bliss and that is what I have been doing for some years, just putting out my music on my terms, increasing my fanbase the best way I can while looking for the next set of people to empower because I must continue to empower.''

How have you been able to stay off controversies?

''Because I mind my business, I go where I am loved, I stay away from the drama. They say its make believe, my family means everything, my business, health and above all God and these are the things I am focused on.''

What has been your most memorable moment in the industry?
'Been a couple, but that 2009 moment with Nas was epic. I was nobody at the time, they gave him a bunch of videos, he saw the 'U Go Wound' video and said that is hip-hop, I like it, that was a huge moment.

Winning the Headies couple of years ago was also huge I had been nominated a couple of times, 13 nominations actually, I won on the 14th and 15th nominations, Lyricist on the Roll and Best Rap Single, and for everytime my albums drop, it was a huge moment for me, whether it has that deafening buzz or not, it means much to me.''

The interview has been slightly edited for Clarity

Google's l/O Developer Conference Is Coming Up In May

Posted: 28 Jan 2019 08:46 AM PST

Google Developer Conference

Kicking off on the 7th of May, Google's next I/O developer conference will be taking place at the Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, CA. The 2018 conference kicked off on the 8th of May.

Every year, Google announces the date of this event by means of a puzzle. This year they tweeted out a 12-line block of text accompanied by a URL leading to a video that rehashed the text with pictures. It was almost instantly solved by a Twitter user named Till Kottmann, giving us a time and place for the event.

The conference is famous for showcasing Google's latest developments in terms of its products and services. Last year we heard about Google Assistant, Android, Google Maps and AR. Google Assistant, or the Duplex AI project, wowed everyone with its ability to make appointments over the phone in a super realistic voice, Android got an overhaul, Google Maps gave us a better sense of direction, and multiplayer AR became a thing.

This year the event will run from May 7 to May 9 and we're sure to see a lot more change and innovation in the online space, as well as general updates on things like Google Lens and Android. Duplex will likely return with improvements to show. Either way, AI is the name of the game and Google is gearing up to be one of the biggest players.

Davido sells out the 20,000 capacity O2 London Arena

Posted: 28 Jan 2019 08:38 AM PST

The DMW boss marked a pivotal point in his career at his sold out headline concert at the 20,000 capacity London O2 Arena.
Sunday night, January 27, 2019, is one that will not be forgotten as Davido etched his name in the history books selling out the iconic O2 Arena and highlighting a vivid indication of his increasing dominance on the global scene.

While a number of Nigerian artists have in the past performed at the smaller O2 stages, Wizkid remains the only one to have taken on the main O2 stage and successfully sold out his AfroRepublik concert in 2018.

And when Davido announced shortly after that his eyes was set on achieving a similar feat, very few were in doubt that this would be another ticked box in his career moves.

'We rise by lifting others'' is one slogan that has defined Davido's blueprint over the years with his support of a number of talents on his platform and on his biggest night, he was yet again true to his words with a number of opening performances from his proteges.

The event kicked off with sets from various DJs including Tim Westwood and DJ Ecool who played some of the finest songs from home.

From Mayorkun to Peruzzi, Idowest, Dremo, Yonda and Zlatan, members of his DMW crew and affiliates all got shine time on the night getting the crowd warmed up for what was to come.

Other artists who took to the stage on the night include Victor AD who performed his smash hit, 'Wetin We Gain', Tomi Agape,

After a brief delay, the hour eventually came, as international actor Idris Elba who was a special guest took to stage to announce Davido, who made an epic entrance arriving on a suspended platform to a rapturous cheer from the waiting crowd, where he stayed for some minutes as he kicked things off with 'Aye.'

The man that the audience had gathered to watch and in true superstar fashion, backed by the Compozers live band and his colourful dancers, Davido's stage prowess outshone any expectations that those who gathered might have brought into the arena.

Performing a familiar set-list of his large catalog of hit anthems including songs like 'Dami Duro', 'FIA', 'If', 'Fall', 'Assurance', bringing his girlfriend, Chioma on stage as they shared a kiss, Davido served off back to back bangers during his over set.

The crowd who were well versed with the line up of his songs sang loudly to every one in what was a very charged atmosphere and Davido's energetic set matched the energy from the audience.

There were also a few surprise appearances who joined Davido on stage including the likes of Jamaican superstar, Popcaan.

This was one concert that he had long prepared for, one he had long wanted to accomplish and the night came to its close glamorously with Davido looking upon the 20,000 gathered crowd as they screamed loudly to his name.

The much anticipated concert indeed was how he had pictured it, perhaps even better, Davido had not only sold out the O2 Arena, but he had also left his mark at the historic British venue.

Sierra Leone Gets Faster Internet Services

Posted: 28 Jan 2019 08:13 AM PST

Wireless Broadband
Telecom operator K3 Telecom, a subsidiary of the Swiss group K3 Telecom AG, launched in Sierra Leone on 21 January 2019.

This marked the official start of their ISP with triple-play services in Freetown, on their own wireless broadband telecommunications network. The services will be provided via wireless technology.

Mohammed Nasrallah, chief executive officer of K3 Telecom Sierra Leone, explained that the company has opted for wireless because deploying a cable that connects each home and that offers broadband Internet, TV services and IP telephony, is very expensive in terms of time and money in developing markets that express a strong need for connectivity services.

He said even though Freetown will be the starting point of their operation, the company has plans to expand it to other parts of the country in the coming months.

"We are entering the market with attractive packages that will start at a price of $99. We don't want to be the cheapest ISP provider but we want to be the provider with the best in terms of price and quality," he said.

"We are entering the market with attractive offers starting from US $ 99, we do not want to be the cheapest internet access provider on the market, we want to be the best value supplier," said Nasrallah.

Uros Mlakar, CEO of K3 Telecom AG said that in the coming months, the company's network will be upgraded and expanded to extend the signal reach to a wider area of Freetown.

"Internet will be extremely fast and uncapped already in basic packages, allowing for carefree communication, emailing and using video services," he said and assured that in the coming months, their network will be further upgraded and expanded to increase the range of their signal.

Mlakar disclosed the launch of Next Smart TV, a platform with more than 100 channels.

He added that the digital program will provide extended insight into the television program scheme and contents.

Gartner Predicts Global IT Spending To Reach $3.8trillion In 2019

Posted: 28 Jan 2019 07:59 AM PST

Gartner Tech Growth
Global IT spending is anticipated to increase by 3.2 per cent and reach $3.8 trillion in 2019 due to growth in the cloud, Internet of Things (IoT), and data centre markets.

According to Gartner, spending is shifting from mobile devices to the cloud and data centres.
Despite uncertainty fuelled by recession rumours, Brexit, and trade wars and tariffs, the likely scenario for IT spending in 2019 is growth," said John-David Lovelock, research vice president at Gartner. "However, there are a lot of dynamic changes happening in regards to which segments will be driving growth in the future.

Spending is moving from saturated segments such as mobile phones, PCs and on-premises data centre infrastructure to cloud services and Internet of Things (IoT) devices. IoT devices, in particular, are starting to pick up the slack from devices. Where the devices segment is saturated, IoT is not.

"IT is no longer just a platform that enables organisations to run their business on. It is becoming the engine that moves the business," added Mr Lovelock. "As digital business and digital business ecosystems move forward, IT will be the thing that binds the business together."

With the shift to cloud, a key driver of IT spending, enterprise software will continue to exhibit strong growth, with worldwide software spending projected to grow 8.5 per cent in 2019. It will grow another 8.2 per cent in 2020 to a total $466 billion. Organisations are expected to increase spending on enterprise application software in 2019, with more of the budget shifting to software as a service (SaaS).

Despite a slowdown in the mobile phone market, the devices segment is expected to grow 1.6 per cent in 2019. The largest and most highly saturated smartphone markets, such as China, Unites States and Western Europe, are driven by replacement cycles. With Samsung facing challenges bringing well-differentiated premium smartphones to market and Apple's high price-to-value benefits for its flagship smartphones, consumers kept their current phones and drove the mobile phone market down 1.2 per cent in 2018.

"In addition to buying behaviour changes, we are also seeing skills of internal staff beginning to lag as organisations adopt new technologies, such as IoT devices, to drive digital business," said Mr Lovelock.

"Nearly half of the IT workforce is in urgent need of developing skills or competencies to support their digital business initiatives. Skill requirements to keep up, such as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, API and services platform design and data science, are changing faster than we've ever seen before."

Gartner's IT spending forecast methodology relies heavily on rigorous analysis of sales by thousands of vendors across the entire range of IT products and services. Gartner uses primary research techniques, complemented by secondary research sources, to build a comprehensive database of market size data on which to base its forecast.

The Gartner quarterly IT spending forecast delivers a unique perspective on IT spending across the hardware, software, IT services and telecommunications segments. These reports help Gartner clients understand market opportunities and challenges. The most recent IT spending forecast research is available to Gartner clients in "Gartner Market Databook, Q418 Update." This quarterly IT Spending Forecast page includes links to the latest IT spending reports, webinars, blog posts and press releases.

Mr Lovelock will provide further analysis on the key drivers of the IT market at the Gartner Tech Growth & Innovation Conference taking place 12-13 June in London. The Conference is the premier event for technology providers to learn about the latest trends and tools, innovation predictions, positioning and thought leadership.

Nina Opens Up On How She Entered The Big Brother Naija House

Posted: 28 Jan 2019 05:35 AM PST

Nina

Nina Chinonso Onyenobi was like everyday next-door-girl until Big Brother Naija catapulted her into fame and stardom last year.

In this exclusive interview, the undergraduate of Imo State University opens up on life before the reality TV show, how she survived bullying in the Big Brother house and her affair with former housemate and winner, Miracle, among other interesting issues. Enjoy.

Tell us about your childhood

I'm from a happy family, not rich, not poor but just average. At least, we ate three times a day. We are five children and I am the fourth born, three girls and two boys. I was an easy-going child, more of an extrovert. I'm 21 going 22. Growing up was fun. My parents took good care of us. They provided our needs.

Before Big Brother came along, what were you doing?

I was a student and model. I made wigs and also did make-up. I had interest in make-up and facial modeling. I was aspiring to be an actor, though I was already acting in church, I really looked forward to a Nollywood break. Back then, I remember I starred in a movie entitled, Twin Affairs where I played the role of a gold digger, it was a major role.

How did you discover your ability to act?

When you are passionate about something, things happen naturally. Acting is something I love. With love and passion you can achieve anything.

Big Brother transformed you from the girl-next-door to a celebrity in just three months. How did you get to know about it?

The passion to be part of Big Brother started after I watched a previous edition. I was so moved I decided I wanted to go for the show, and then, a friend sent me the audition flyer. I was so excited and I just wanted to do it. First, I went to church and committed my dream into the hands of God. In fact, I went to Shiloh, which ended on a Saturday, the day I was supposed to audition. But then, I did my auditioning on Sunday and passed. That was the first audition and the crowd was massive! I made it through the first audition in Port Harcourt and the second audition in Lagos, and then there were more auditions and I just kept going until I landed in the House.

Did your parents encourage you?

They were happy, encouraging and praying for me. Even if they didn't, I would still have gone for it, because it's my future I'm building. The idea of finishing school and being jobless was terrifying! So, I really needed to start building my life in terms of what I like, what I wanted my life to look like and besides, if I succeeded, it would be a big boost to my family, especially my siblings.

What do you think made you stand out of the crowd during the auditions?

It was because I didn't go there with any strategy. I went there being Nina. During the audition, they saw that I was real. I later asked one of the organisers and he said that the reason why they chose me was because I was real. You see, I was open and honest on every question they asked me. They saw the honesty in my answers. I believe that's the major reason they chose me. Back in the House too, they asked me if I had a strategy and I said 'no, I have none'. Truth is, I didn't even know what my life was, so I wanted to go in there and watch my life. I went there as a plain girl that anybody could read and understand.

Tell us, who is the real Nina?

I'm a very honest, open and down-to-earth person, with a very pure heart. And I don't gossip. If you annoy me, I'd come straight and tell you. I don't gossip. I'm just like that because that's who I am and I can't change. I hate gossip and I hate proud people. I don't pretend and I'm not proud.

What was the greatest advice you received that contributed to your success at the show and who gave it to you?

That was my sister, I. J, and Aunty Oge Okoye. They advised that I should not pretend but go there and just be Nina. So, I went there and I was Nina; I was me. I didn't even know Nina until I went into the Big Brother house. But I really wanted to know who Nina was. You don't really know who you are until you go there (Big Brother), because the platform will define you. It's exciting. I went to Big Brother and discovered myself.

Did the people you met in the house intimidate you?

Yes, because they were older and very loud. They made too much noise and I don't like noise. I am not used to loud people. I am a very calm and reserved person. They all wanted their voices to be heard, so it really held me back until they started getting evicted and Biggy's advice and Miracle's advice inspired me. They always advised me to be strong. At some point, I was crying a lot and even wanted to go home, but Big Brother made me strong. I noticed Big Brother liked me because of the advice he used to give me. Big Brother showed me love through his advice as a big brother.

What's your take-away from Big Brother show and how has it built you?

I can now express myself very well regardless of where I am, regardless of who is there. In the Big Brother house, I was with celebrities, dignitaries and lots of great people that visited the house. So today, anywhere I find myself, I am able to express myself.

Was it love at first sight with Miracle?

Miracle and I met before we moved into the House. So, we were already friends. It's just normal, mutual friendship. We met at the audition and got into the house, and before we knew it, nature ran its course. I'm not regretting anything because I found out he was true to me. It wasn't his strategy.

What attracted you to Miracle?

Wow! He said because I was real he trusted me. He found out that I was very real. And Miracle by nature is very real and open. He doesn't fear anybody. That was what actually attracted him to me. Miracle is someone you can confide in, and besides, he's a man of his words. Yes, whatever he says, he does. He promised to be there for me till the finals and he was there for me.

Back in the house, when was your breaking point?

(Laughter) That was when everyone was bullying me.

Why do you think they were bullying you?

They all knew my age and were expecting me to respect them, because I was the youngest. But when they didn't get that respect, they decided to bully me. So, when Big Brother told me to ignore them, because everybody is equal regardless of age, my vocal chord was activated! I started talking. Initially, I was scared but when Big Brother started telling me these things, I felt I had been liberated and started talking very well.

Who would you like to act with in Nollywood?

Tonto Dikeh.

Why?

I love her personality. Tontoh Dike is my role model; she's just amazing!

What's your advice for those who desire to participate in Big Brother 2019?

Go for auditions and pray hard. If it's you, it's you. If it's not you, it's not you. If they pick you, just go there and live your life. People may not like you if you live someone else's life, but people will just love you more if you're true to your real self.
