Boko Haram fighters not better equipped than Nigerian troops

Posted: 03 Jan 2019 12:34 AM PST

Nigerian  Army
The Nigerian Army has debunked reports that the ragtag Boko Haram fighters are better equipped than Nigerian soldiers, dismissing them as propaganda and psychological warfare against troops.

Army spokesman, Brigadier-General Sani Kukasheka Usman, in a statement that addresses various issues and concerns about the ongoing counter-insurgency war in Nigeria's northeast, accused some misguided elements in the society of waging psychological warfare against it.

Usman said military issues are not all comers' affairs and lamented that the ongoing counter-terrorism operations were being trivialised and politicised for selfish reasons.

"Unfortunately, the psychological attacks are not being waged against the Nigerian army by the Boko Haram terrorists alone, but also by some misguided elements both within and out of the country.''

Usman noted that most of the false allegations being levelled against the army were based on selfish and mostly political reasons by unpatriotic elements.

"In spite of extant rules, these groups of persons discuss highly classified military issues which they are mostly ignorant about on various media platforms.

"Indeed, those who should know better are the ones perpetrating these acts.

"The psychological effects of spreading misinformation and fake news are grievous and inimical to national security and should not be allowed to continue.''

Usman said that conduct prejudicial to military discipline and cowardice as being exhibited by few misguided soldiers should not be misconstrued as a failure on the part of the military or the government.

He said military equipment and welfare were known issues in the Nigerian army but that when such problems were observed, "appropriate steps are taken to remedy them.''

According to him, the army will always address its challenges and take charge of any issue without any external prompting, criticism or condemnation.

The army spokesman noted that some individuals and groups in and outside Nigeria have been making false claims and allegations that Boko Haram terrorists were better equipped than the Armed Forces Nigeria.

He said: "Nothing can be further from the truth as the armed forces of Nigeria have universally accepted doctrines, better trained, equipped and well motivated.

"Therefore, there is no basis for comparison between the Nigerian soldier and the Boko Haram terrorists.''

Usman said the recent attacks on troops by the terrorists were not as a result of superior arms or equipment.

Rather, he said, it was due to the use of psychological weapon "which is as good as any lethal weapons.''

"The psychological attacks have been further aggravated by some unpatriotic elements in the society that take joy and pride in propagating such falsehoods.

"It is surprising that some Nigerians, for whatever mundane reasons, would compare a group of confused and misguided elements operating under the influence of drugs and warped ideologies to Nigerian army troops.

"It will be necessary to observe that unlike the Nigerian army, the terrorists live amongst the populace and used that opportunity to spread their propaganda.

"Nigerian army fights according to set down Rule of Engagement, while the Boko Haram terrorists do not.

"Also, while the Nigerian army seeks to protect lives and properties, the renegades seek to destroy same,'' he said.

Usman said that the army was convinced that those negative comments against it were aimed at demoralising its troops and break their cohesion.

"They (comments) are borne out of selfish, political and unpatriotic reasons with a view to bringing down the government of the day.

"We totally condemn and reject the insinuations that the Boko Haram terrorists are better equipped than the Nigerian army.

"Rather, we are bold to say and re-affirm that Nigerian army troops are better trained, equipped and better motivated than the rag-tag terrorists.

"Indeed, there is no basis for comparison.

"It should be realised that the use of psychological attack on the army is as potent as the use of arms and ammunition,'' Usman noted.

He expressed concern over recent negative reportage and criticisms of the army in the social and mainstream media, regarding equipment and attacks on troops' locations in the North East, especially Borno North.

17 % of Congo poll results ready, four days after voting

Posted: 03 Jan 2019 12:20 AM PST

The  Congo Election Frontrunners
Results from Democratic Republic of Congo's presidential election are trickling in with only 17 per cent of the votes tallied as at Wednesday, four days after the Sunday election.

The electoral commission has thus warned that the entire result could be delayed beyond Sunday's deadline, as counting centres are still waiting for more than 80 percent of local tallies.

The election, which is meant to mark Congo's first democratic transfer of power, has already been marred by violence and logistical problems. The opposition has said there was widespread fraud, an accusation dismissed by the government.

As of Wednesday – four days after the election – counting centres had received just 17 percent of the tally sheets drawn up by individual polling stations, the president of the CENI electoral commission, Corneille Nangaa, said.

"We will try as hard as possible to meet Sunday's deadline, but it will be challenging," Nangaa said. He did not say what was causing the delays.

A spokesman for Felix Tshisekedi, one of two opposition candidates, said the hold-up was a further sign of fraud. "They are clearly trying to prolong the process to manipulate the truth of the ballots," said Vidiye Tshimanga.

There was no immediate reaction from the government, though regional monitors earlier said the Dec. 30 vote was "relatively well-managed" given the challenges involved.

The election allowed "the majority of the Congolese population to exercise its right to vote," the Southern African Development Community (SADC) said.

Vote counting was transparent, 59 per cent of polling places it observed opened on time and police securing the polls behaved professionally, the organisation added.

Approval of the election's results by SADC powers such as South Africa and Angola will be critical for the legitimacy of the administration of the next president, who will succeed veteran incumbent Joseph Kabila on Jan. 18.

Angola and South Africa have been important allies of Kabila over the years, but relations were strained by his refusal to step down when his mandate officially expired in 2016.

Pre-election polling showed Kabila's preferred candidate, ex-interior minister Emmanuel Ramazani Shadary, trailing the main opposition candidates, Martin Fayulu and Felix Tshisekedi, but both sides say they expect to win.

An African Union observer mission said in a separate statement on Wednesday that election day was blighted by a number of logistical problems.

"The holding of these elections constitutes, in itself, a first great victory for the Congolese people," it said. "The mission strongly wishes that the results that will be declared are true to the vote of the Congolese people."

Kabila's government refused to accredit election monitors from the European Union and the U.S.-based Carter Center, which said there were widespread irregularities in the 2011 election.

Contested election results in 2006 and 2011 led to violent street protests, and a disputed outcome this time could also destabilise Congo's volatile eastern borderlands with Rwanda, Uganda and Burundi, where dozens of militia groups are active.

Army hits back on misguided claims

Nigerian Army has said some misguided elements were waging psychological warfare against it, politicising the war against insurgents and also debunked reports that ragtag Boko Haram fighters had better weapons.
The army said that Boko Haram fighters were not better equipped than Nigerian soldiers.

8 dangerous mistakes to avoid during s3x

8 dangerous mistakes to avoid during s3x

It's a big no
Love making can be extremely rewarding while it can also go completely wrong.
Whether you enjoy your session entirely depends on both of you. To ensure that you both enjoy that exclusive moment with your loved one, you must keep off some things.

Here is a list of things you should never do when having sex:

1. Farting

Oops! This is so annoying. While it can be accidental, you must try as hard as possible not to let out that pungent gas while making love. Otherwise, it will spoil the moment and may also affect your self-esteem.

2. Missing the target

This is for men who can hardly differentiate between the two holes. Wait, who even does that? Anyway, be keen not to miss it as it can offend your woman or send the wrong message.

3. Fall asleep

This is a grave sin when it comes to sex matters. It just shows how disinterested you are and you should not start it if you are already feeling sleepy.

4. Calling another person's name

If you want to lose someone for good, dare call another person's name during sex. If you are not sure of what will come out of your mouth, keep it shut.

5. Your phone

You will have all the time to chat with friends and answer those phone calls. But in the meantime, you had better concentrate on making love and giving your partner their out of this world sexual encounter.

6. Reciprocate the favor

If they gave you an oral job, be ready to pay back. Otherwise, it will be so mean of you. Also, if you happen to cum earlier, do not leave your partner unattended. Ensure they also climax through other ways besides penetration.

7. Dry penetration

Ouch! This really hurts and every guy ought to get this clearly in their minds. The fact that you are hard enough does not necessarily mean that it's time to slide into her honey pot yet. Ensure she is wet enough or make use of the lube.

8. Crying

Hahaha! Funny, right? At times women get so hysterical during love making that they even cry. Please hold back those tears and preserve them for some other sad occasion. Crying will only put him off since he may be worried that he hurt you.

The balancing act of Show Dem Camp

Posted: 02 Jan 2019 10:00 PM PST

With its pantheon-like disography of cult classics and alte vibes, Show Dem Camp is the reigning MVP of Nigerian rap music.

Ghost and Tec of Show Dem Camp

The twin wordsmiths Ghost and Tec, collectively known as Show Dem Camp have proven that with grit and diversity, rap can be a viable in Nigeria.

On the first day of the year, Tuesday, January 1, 2019, the rap duo have dropped a new mixtape, the fourth instalment of their 'Clone Wars' series with the subtitle 'These Buhari Times'.

Long-standing fans of the 'Bang Bang!' brothers are aware of Ghost and Tec's flair for social and political commentary.

For newcomers, it might be a weird turn for the rhyme slingers who since 2017 have blessed us with two breezy and calm offerings known as 'Palm Wine Music' and 'Palm Wine Music 2'.

The duality in their approach has seen SDC's stock rise from being the choice of backpackers alone to the darlings of a niche and growing crowd.

The success of their 2018 Palm Wine Fest is clear evidence that Ghost and Tec have gone beyond the sphere of cyphers and intricate rhyme schemes.

With all that has been said about Nigeria Hip-Hop within the last couple of years (mostly bad), SDC has proven to be the exception. Their consistency and high-quality body of work has separated them from the pack of moaners and groaners.

Show Dem Camp has released seven projects in nine years, 'Clone Wars Vol. 1' in 2010, 'The Dreamer Project' in 2011, 'Clone Wars Vol. 2' in 2012, 'Clone Wars Vol. 3' in 2016, 'Palm Wine Music' in 2017, 'Palm Wine Music 2' in 2018 and 'Clone Wars Vol. 4' in 2019.

While the group might not have a stack of mainstream hits, their attention to pop culture and movements have gained them a cult fan base. Also, their penchant for dropping conscious music served as the foundation for Ghost and Tec.

The year 2013 would be a tipping point for SDC. The single 'Feel Alright' featuring brother-in-rhymes Poe and the singer with the smoky vocals BOJ would serve as a surprise hit for SDC.

The song, however, was slightly ahead of its time. The palm wine vibe would not be replicated again till 2017 when a fresh, young generation of acts who dared to seek a new sound had formed a sub-culture known as alte.

With this new tribe, Show Dem Camp was comfortable in further harnessing the potential of the palm wine music vibe. This approach has birthed two stellar projects which have found a home with listeners who mainly turned off to the sounds coming out of mainstream radio.

The success of Ghost and Tec serves as a reminder to Nigerian rappers that is okay to come out of your comfort zone of bars and create a body of work that will attract a new fan base.

In the Palm Wine Music, projects SDC sacrificed high-end lyricism for cohesiveness and relatability. Many Nigerian lyricists can borrow a thing or two from them based on this approach.

SDC, however, haven't lost their heads to the intoxicating taste of palm wine. In these Buhari times, they have dropped another dope project to help their fans navigate the struggles of living in Nigeria in 2019.

Not many rap acts can balance the two extremes, good quality rap music and good quality crossover rap music. Ghost and Tec have however found the winning formula.

Bang! Bang!

Bird Box trended Online but failed to deliver- Netflix

Posted: 02 Jan 2019 09:30 PM PST

'Bird Box' is the latest movie to come under the trend of 'see no evil, hear no evil, and speak no evil' thriller/horror flicks.

Bird Box on Netflix

Within the last few days of 2018, the Netflix backed Bird Box became a trending topic on Twitter and inevitably gave birth to many memes.

While the jury is still out on whether the viral sensation was organic or a gimmick straight from Netflix's PR department, the hype around the movie led many to watch it.

The plot of the movie is simple. The talented Sandra Bullock, who remains one of the most bankable female leads in Hollywood, plays the central character in a post-apocalyptic world.

On a bright sunny day, millions of people commit suicide once they lay eyes on a destructive wind-like force.

Predictably, a band of people come together in a house for survival. And here comes the normal horror tropes, the smart asshole that no one listens to, the foolish caring woman who opens the door for strangers, the alpha male, the scared male, the horny couple etc. You get my drift.

Through acts of bravery, stupidity, and cowardice the band of people are reduced to two main characters and two kids.

As it is with most post-apocalyptic movies, there is a haven far from where Sandra Bullock has called home for the past five years.

Now she must embark on a journey on a boat with two kids. The cherry on top is that all three of them must navigate the waters blindfolded.

Bird Box is a thriller movie that plays by the books. It uses all the tropes in the book to create suspense but not enough to make you leap out from your chair.

The plot line is nothing new and does not hold up enough surprises. It's your basic thriller with blindfolds and birds chirping.

Sandra Bullock is the stand out talent in the movie. She delivers a strong performance expected from an Academy Award winner. Bullock brings depth and drama to an average story.

Bird Box is the victim of its own hype as it doesn't live up to its memes. Before watching Bird Box, I thought it was going to be enthralling, but after viewing it, some of its memes are more engaging.

"If a person wants to be gay, let them gay in peace" - Alexx Ekubo says

Posted: 02 Jan 2019 09:00 PM PST

Alexx Ekubo

You don't get to read an open letter from Alexx Ekubo often, so when he writes one, we can't but want to find out what he is bothered about and this time he thinks you all should let gay people be gay in peace!
The movie star took to his Instagram page on New Year's day January 1, 2019, where he not only wrote about allowing gay people have their way but also wanted the youths to stop criticising people about the source of their wealth.

"Dear Nigerian Youth, learn to be happy for one another, hating another man's candle won't light yours, if someone buys a car, be happy for the person, if someone builds a house be happy & pray that God blesses you to do the same, don't start criticizing & calling names, "fraudster" "gigolo" "husband snatcher " a thief who hasn't had the opportunity, considers himself an honest man" trust me you would do worse should the opportunity present itself, So shut up!

"Learn to live & let live, if a person wants to be gay, let them gay in peace, personally I'm NOT, have NEVER been, & will NEVER be, lets allow pple to be free & comfortable with their sexual preference, stop the name calling & shaming. If a woman has certain insecurities about her body & wants to fix it, it's her prerogative, her risk, her money & ultimately her body, face front & worry about what you'll eat for dinner. If a person wants to pay their tithe, let them pay, is it your money? Personally, I'm an unrepentant tithe payer, you wanna know why? Because I want to contribute to the outreach the church is doing, now if my pastor wants to buy a Rolls Royce or a private jet with it, that's fine with me, God thats sees in the secret & reward in the open, will never let my labor of love go unnoticed," he wrote.

He also went on to advice the youths to stop fueling already existing issues with the kind of words and reactions they give with major reference to marriage and relationship palaver.

"If a person wants to be gay, let them gay in peace"

Hmmmm...just in case you are on this table Alexx Ekubo is sharing, then maybe you should have a rethink in this new year and do less criticising, and be more supportive of friends, family, and celebrities too. Alexx Ekubo's message might not be different from the statement put out by comedian, Okey Bakassi a few months ago.

Okey Bakassi has a message for busybodies on social media

Okey Bakassi a message for people who we like to term busybodies who tend to drop unnecessary comments on social media post. The veteran comedian made his frustrations known on his Instagram page on Tuesday, September 11, 2018, where he posted a video. According to him, it is really unwarranted for anyone to make comments on social media especially if they have no knowledge of the topic.

Okey Bakassi

"It has become very clear to me why people fail exams is not common sense if you don't understand something you ask questions. Even in African culture those days when things are too confusing they ask the oracle to even find the answer. So why rush to click the reply button on someone's post on social media when you don't understand the point. You reply and just talk nonsense, off point.

"Something wen nor concern the post you will just go and reply. If you read a post and move on, something go happen to you? I don't even understand, some people nor dey even borrow sense wetin you nor understand, ask questions, don't go to the public square and express your stupidity," he concluded.

Buhari’s Family Has No Shares In Etisalat And Keystone, Investors Slam PDP

Posted: 02 Jan 2019 04:45 PM PST

…Wants party, others to verify ownership structure at CAC

Due to incessant allegation by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that President Muhammadu Buhari's family has ownership of shares in the Etisalat Nigeria and Keystone Bank, a group of investors in Lagos State, under the leadership of Mr. Michael Akekehgon, has condemned the claim, saying sale of both institutions followed due processes with the involvements of industry's regulators.

For instance, after about a year of back and forth struggle, process of selecting a preferred bidder for the sale of 9Mobile, formerly Etisalat, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) jointly, in their roles as regulators, opted for an innovative approach to deal with a distressed company – 9mobile operated by Emerging Markets Telecommunications Services Limited (EMTS) which its predecessor, Mubadala Group, Etisalat International brand pulled out of the country due to massive debt.

Speaking further, the serial investor, Mr. Akekehgon told The Daily Times that the CBN in collaboration with the NCC, had in July 2017 appointed a Board of Directors chaired by Dr. Joseph Nnanna, the Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, to oversee the affairs of the company pending the completion of regulatory due diligence of the bid documents submitted by Teleology and sixteen others for its acquisition. He explained that Barclays Africa superintended the bid process, adding that there was no way the sale process could have been doctored as claimed by the PDP, because the entire procedures were open and plain, hence, the emergence of Teleology Nigeria Limited, who has since completed payment of $301 million to acquire 9Mobile.

He, however, advised the aggrieved persons, group or political parties to approach appropriate agencies to verify their claims.

"Whoever that is in doubt of the ownership structure of both Etisalat and Keystone Bank, have the liberty to verify his or her claim at the CAC.

"In fact, the last payment of $251.1 million to complete the total sum of $301 million to perfect the full takeover of the mobile network operator was sourced from Afreximbank," he said.

The new owner of 9mobile had said: "Teleology is pleased to announce the constitution of a new Board of Directors for Nigeria's multi-award-winning telecommunication company, 9mobile, following the successful completion of the tenure of the former Board appointed by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and in fulfillment of the consequential transfer of final ownership to the new investors, Teleology Nigeria Limited." "We thank all out-going members of the Board for helping to shepherd 9mobile through the critical transition phase it has passed through since July 2017 and wishes them the very best in their future assignments.

"For us, the composition of the new Board of Directors is another significant milestone, and this follows the issuance of final approval of no objection by the Board of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to the effect that the technical and financial bids Teleology submitted for 9mobile met and satisfied all the regulatory requirements. This is indeed the dawn of a new era in the evolution of the 9mobile brand in the Nigerian market", it added.

The new Board of Directors of the telecommunication company are Nasiru Ado Bayero, Chairman; Asega Aliga, Non-Executive Director; Adrian Wood, Non-Executive Director; Mohammed Edewor, Non-Executive Director; Winston Ndubueze Udeh, Non-Executive Director; Abdulrahman Ado, Executive Director and Stephane Beuvelet, Acting Managing Director.

Similarly, the new owners of Keystone Bank who were referred as a Consortium of local investors called Sigma Golf Nigeria Limited and Riverbank Investment Resources announced transitional governance arrangement that include new Board Chairman; Acting Managing Director/CEO; Executive Director and two Non-Executive Directors. The lender, which had since 2017 handed over officially to its new owner by the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON), has since named transition board team including new Board Chairman, Alhaji Umaru H. Modibbo, Hafiz Bakare, a Non-Executive Director; Titilayo Tairat Adebiyi; Mr. Dan-Habu, and Mrs. Isichei who was the then Executive Director in-charge of Operations and Technology at Keystone Bank Limited.

Boko Haram: Why I Haven’t Criticised Buhari Despite Borno’s Worsening Insecurity

Posted: 02 Jan 2019 04:37 PM PST

Governor Kashim Shettima
Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno State has called for collective support to the military to enhance successful campaign against Boko Haram insurgents.

Shettima made the appeal while addressing the extraordinary security meeting organised for various stakeholders on Monday night in Maiduguri.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Shettima, alongside other participants, held a closed door meeting well into the middle of the night to proffer solutions to the resurgence of Boko Haram attacks in parts of the state.

Shettima called on the people to unite irrespective of their differences, rally round behind the Nigerian Armed Forces, Police and other security agencies, to effectively end Boko Haram insurgency and restore peace to the state.

He said: "The realities are that while so much was achieved by our gallant military, we are, today, faced with serious challenges in Borno State.

"These challenges should strengthen our abiding faith and resolve to continually do whatever we could in support of our military, the Police, the Department of State Security Service, Civilian Joint Task Force, paramilitary agencies and political authorities at the federal level, to end the Boko Haram insurgency.

"I have met the President a number of times, including a few weeks ago. I have led our National Assembly members to the President and in all our discussions, we all saw on the face, in words and actions of the President, absolute sincerity in terms of his deep concern, his empathy and his compassion towards our plight in the northeast, particularly in Borno.

"The President is, without the slightest doubt, devoted to the fight against Boko Haram insurgency.

"I believe that service chiefs, the Inspector General of Police, the Director General of DSS and other heads of paramilitary agencies share the commitments of the President.

"Most importantly, troops in the front lines have laid down their lives, proved their commitment in the service of our country and in obedience to the President.

"This fight is a collective one that affects all of us. We all have a stake in the peace and stability of Borno and this is why we chose to hold an extraordinary security meeting with carefully chosen participants."

NAN reports that the meeting was attended by heads of the military and security agencies, leadership of the CJTF, traditional rulers, elders, senators, members of House of Representatives and State House of Assembly.

Other participants were selected local council chairmen, commissioners, leadership of the University of Maiduguri and selected tertiary institutions, representatives of the Nigerian Labour Congress, Nigerian Bar Association, Nigerian Union of Journalists, National Council of Women Societies and Nigerian Legion. (NAN)

Read Mr Shettima's full speech below:

"Your royal highnesses and our elders, I will like to start by saying that the aim of convening this important meeting is not to pass blames or to pass any kind of verdict on our security agencies.

"I think the most inhuman way to go is to gather and condemn those who are putting their lives on the line and giving their lives in efforts to find peace. ‎

"We are principally here as a family, as a people all affected by the situation in Borno State, to discuss suggestions that will hopefully contribute to combined ongoing efforts towards addressing the problem.

"For seven years, we held our regular security council meetings. I from to time consult with some of the participants here. However, I never for once convene an extraordinary meeting of this nature because, frankly speaking, I was avoiding a sort of dramatisation or being sensational about our challenges in Borno State.

"Without being insensitive to the realities of our situation, I feel deeply pained whenever Borno is being discussed on the basis of helpless weakness. I prefer to assume a position of strength; a position of normalcy and a character of being incurably optimistic. It was in these regards that we created a full-fledged Ministry of Reconstruction, Rehabilitation and Resettlement and deployed enormous public resources to rebuild more than 30,000 homes of citizens, hospitals, water installations, local government secretariats, schools and palaces of traditional rulers.

"It was with the same mind that we kept on pushing for voluntary and dignified return of displaced citizens to safe and rebuilt communities.

"My greatest wish was and still is, not to bequeath Boko Haram challenges and IDP Camps to my successor. We wanted to, and still want to get Borno fully back to normal days. Sometimes, I unconsciously find myself boasting that Borno is safer than Lagos. I simply feel very bad to sound pessimistic about Borno. I so much believe in optimism.

"Of course, I know that in governance, responding to some situations demand a combination of being both optimistic and realistic.

"The realities, Your Royal Highnesses, invited participants, is that while so much was achieved by our gallant military men and women, we are today faced with serious challenges in Borno State. But then, these challenges should strengthen our abiding faith and resolve to continually do whatever we can, in support of our military, the police, the DSS, our Civilian JTF, all para-military agencies and political authorities at the federal level, to end the Boko Haram insurgency.

"I have met the President a number of times, including few weeks ago. I have led our national assembly members to the president and in all our discussions, we all saw on the face, in words and actions of the President, absolute sincerity in terms of his deep concern, his empathy and his compassion towards our plight in the northeast, particularly in Borno.

"President Muhammadu Buhari is without the slightest doubt, devoted to the fight against Boko Haram. I believe that service chiefs, the IGP, the DG of DSS and heads of all para-military agencies share the commitment of Mr President.

"Most importantly, troops in the front lines, have with their own lives, proved their commitment in the service of our country and in obedience to the President, Commander In Chief. The President has mobilised world leaders in support of Nigeria's fight against Boko Haram. He has fostered regional cooperation and he supports troops.

"Some persons have asked why I have not criticised the Buhari government or the Nigerian military over situations in Borno. My response to them is that unlike in previous years when I was treated as an enemy of the Presidency, I have from 2015 to date, gained unfettered access to the President. I see the Commander-In-Chief at the shortest request and I tell him my concerns, he listens to me with keen interest and in most cases, he takes measures. I have not had reason to be frustrated with the Presidency, unlike previous years.

"Let me say that even under the previous administration, I regularly supported and defended the military. When I said in February 2014, that the military was not being well equipped, it was not a comment by design, it was a spontaneous reaction which came out of frustration and it was in defence of the soldiers being killed in front lines. I knew the problems.

Some people have said I was later vindicated. Nigerians can bear witness that from 2011 to date, I prefer to speak from a position of strength rather than a position of hopelessness.

"I prefer to inspire our military and citizens. I prefer to make security matters as discrete as possible. There were times I managed to see the former President but our meetings were always under rush. There were times I resorted to writing him for the record. I remember one specific instance I wrote a strong letter in 2013, over serious concerns raised by the Nigerian Air Force command in Borno State, and I have to admit that President Jonathan took immediate measures on that.

"As a state government, we have done and will continue to do everything humanly possible in support of the fight against Boko Haram. We have given very serious financial, moral and political support to the counter-insurgency. All security agencies and the federal government (including the previous Jonathan administration) have strongly acknowledged the role of the Civilian JTF in the successes recorded by the military.

"From 2013 to date, Borno State Government has been solely responsible for funding the Civilian JTF in terms of their training, their allowances, deployment, operational vehicles and their kits. We will continue to support the Civilian JTF, our military, the police and all other security agencies. We have secretly been engaging hunters in some areas without making noise. We believe security of lives is what makes government legitimate.

"Your royal highnesses, invited participants, everyone here has been playing one or more roles in the fight against Boko Haram. This fight is a collective one that affects all of us. We all have stakes in the peace and stability of Borno and this is why we chose to hold an extraordinary security meeting with carefully chosen participants. There are many important stakeholders that were not invited and it is not because they do not matter but because we wanted to minimize our number. We deliberately did not invite persons on individual basis in order to prevent perceptions or feelings of alienation. Even as this gathering is constituted, it is too large from a security point of view. Nevertheless, we are at a point in which we needed to convene a meeting of this nature so as to form a broader and more inclusive platform to listen to each other, to hopefully generate some new ideas.

"To chart a new course and to also rebuild public confidence. Leadership requires building and nurturing the hopes of citizens. Times like ours require all of us raising the hopes of citizens, but these hopes should not be blind ones. They should be based on the measures we take.

"Their Royal Highnesses are permanent leaders and custodians of our communities. We politicians come and go, royal fathers do not have tenure of office. Our elders here are the conscience of our communities. They stood for Borno when it was impossible to move freely in our state capital.

"Our national and state assembly members are representatives of our people. I do not think it is wise to see security as purely an executive thing. I believe in productive and strategic cooperation. We all need ourselves to move faster. The legislature is sometimes the most authoritative in relating with organs of the Federal Government.

"All the groups we invited have roles to play. We need the buy-in and ideas of the NLC, whose members have been victims in different places attacked. We need the NBA whose lawyers deal with issues of public rights including being defendants of suspects under prosecution and who should guide us. We need our retired military elders in the Nigerian Legion whose experiences of yesterday can be a benefit to this gathering. We invited journalists. We need the NUJ leadership to as stakeholders, help us manage information in ways that will help the state and not destabilize it.

"I have in the course of work realized that the best way to relate with journalists is to sometimes take them into confidence. We invited unions of transport and road workers whose hundreds of members move around the state and have come across different security situations. They see so much on the roads. We invited representatives of our tertiary institutions, religious leaders and management of markets for us to think ahead of insurgents. Knowing the Boko Haram, they may send our minds to the north while planning to head the south.

"We need to strengthen security measures in schools, mosques and churches, markets and all public places across Borno State. We should not be taken unawares. We invited the council on women societies because women and our children constitute the largest number of traumatized and displaced victims of the Boko Haram insurgency. They bear the brunt.

"Your royal highnesses, elders, national and state assembly members, heads of security establishments, members of the state executive council, chairmen, representatives of various groups, I will like to appeal to all of us that our meeting should not be driven by emotions. We should speak with logic. We should see all of here as stakeholders with genuine interest in the peace and security of Borno. We should speak with mutual respect and with trust in the sincerity of each other. Our focus should largely be about finding solutions. We all know the situation of things. Let us as a family with equal stakes, suggest solutions that will insha'Allah, contribute to addressing our problems.

"I wish us a meaningful meeting and not a tea party. I will at this point thank and request our friends in the media to allow us hold a closed-door meeting. I will like to say also that we are not issuing a communique. Whatever we resolve will be transmitted to the President, Commander In Chief in writing and not for public consumption."

NEW MINIMUM WAGE: Labour Announces Date For Nationwide Strike

Posted: 02 Jan 2019 04:17 PM PST

Comrade Ayuba Wabba
Following the inability of the Federal Government to urgently transmit the bill on the new national minimum wage to the National Assembly, the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has set Jan. 8 as date for the commencement of an indefinite nationwide strike.

NAN reports that NLC president, Comrade Ayuba Wabba said the strike would be inevitable if nothing happened before the set date.

He appealed to workers across the nation to support the action to succeed in the interest of their social and economic prosperity.

Wabba called on the Federal Government to urgently transmit the bill on the new national minimum wage to the National Assembly for a speedy passage.

He said: "It is unfortunate that the Federal Government is yet to transmit to the National Assembly an executive bill for the enactment of N30,000 as the new national minimum wage.

"Government's dilly-dallying on the issue has strained Government-Labour relations with a potential for a major national strike which could just be days away.

"I want to appeal to the government to do the needful by urgently transmitting the bill on the new national minimum wage to the National Assembly.

"We also would like to use this same opportunity to urge workers to fully mobilise for a prolonged national strike and enforce their right."

Explaining that the strike has becomes inevitable as the last option for labour, the NLC president called on all Nigerians and businesses to understand and support it.

He however assured workers that their labour, patience and diligence would not be in vain.

Wabba said the NLC leadership remains committed to giving all it takes to ensure workers get just and fair wages in a decent work environment appropriate to their well-being.

He added that the NLC leadership is similarly committed to social protection for workers.

"The new year presents great opportunities for workers, pensioners, civil society allies and their friends and families to put their numbers to good use.

"This is by voting out, not on the basis of tribe or religion but purely policy, any candidate that cannot serve their interest.

"In the year that is ahead of us, the NLC remains unequivocally committed to the national and workers' goals which include the campaign for industrialisation, against selective enforcement of "No Work, No Pay" policy of government, among others," he said.

2019 PRESIDENCY: Fani-Kayode Chides Fr. Mbaka For Endorsing Buhari For Second Term

Posted: 02 Jan 2019 04:02 PM PST

Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka
Femi Fani-Kayode, a former Aviation Minister, on Wednesday reacted to the endorsement of President Muhammadu Buhari for a second term by the Spiritual Director, Adoration Ministry, Enugu Nigeria, Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka.

Mbaka had claimed that if God was against Buhari, He would have allowed him to die.

In his new year message, the clergyman said Buhari remained the best presidential candidate.

"Among all the Presidential aspirants, Buhari stands in the best position in winning the presidential election," Mbaka had said.

Reacting to Mbaka's endorsement, Fani-Kayode described the cleric as an agent of Satan.

In a tweet, Fani-Kayode wrote: "If God does not want Buhari he could have died – Father Mbaka.

"Short man devil has spoken! I am convinced beyond all reasonable doubt that this creature from the 7th circle of hell is an agent of satan.

"He is worse than Rasputin: he thrives on falsehood and reeks of sulphur!"

2019 PRESIDENCY: Nigerians Will Regret If They Vote Against Buhari – Olusola Oke

Posted: 02 Jan 2019 03:56 PM PST

Chief Olusola Oke
Chief Olusola Oke, Southwest Director of the Buhari/Osinbajo Campaign Organisation for the 2019 presidential election, says not voting for President Muhammadu Buhari will denote backwardness.

Oke said this while receiving members of Buhari/Osinbajo Strategic Solidarity Movement (BOSSEM) on Wednesday in Akure.

"Voting for candidate apart from President Buhari come 2019, is like the Israelites going back to Egypt but in APC we are focused on Canaan by supporting Buhari.

"Mr President is the real project and APC has a way of finding solutions to its problems, so, that is not a problem. We will all work together," he said.

Aside the internal crises within the party, Chief Oke, who is a two time governorship candidate in the state, said the major challenge of next general election was for Nigerians to make the right choice, Daily Post reports.

He assured the movement that the opposing camps within the party would work for the re-election of Mr President.

The campaign director dispelled political insinuations that the internal crises within the the party would affect the second term bid of the president in the South West.

"My primary work is to bring everybody together: the aggrieved and non-aggrieved to have a good showing.

"We need everybody, so whosoever is aggrieved; we will make appeal to them. I am happy about one thing: Whosoever is aggrieved will still work for our President.

"The Yoruba people are very sophisticated politically. Their place in the last election is crucial and critical and it's going to be same in this election.

"We have our own options and we have weighed the options and at this level, the option of Buhari has no alternative and that is why we are going for him. No doubt, there are challenges," he said.

According to him, the challenges of what the present administration has been facing for the past three and half years are to lay a new foundation for the growth of the country.

"The super-structure is yet to come. It is now our responsibility as Nigerians to make sure the solid foundation is not destroyed so that the superstructure can be put on it.

"To achieve this is not going to be an easy job, but we are fortified in our belief by the existence of the various groups, that also care about the future.

"Therefore, whatever challenges that we have are not insurmountable and I can assure you, we have put our hands on deck and we are not going to look back," he assured.

Posted: 02 Jan 2019 03:42 PM PST

Labour
The Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, has said that further meeting with the Federal Government over the proposed N30, 000 new minimum wage is no longer necessary.

NLC, through its General Secretary, Dr. Peter Ozo-Eson confirmed receipt of invitation for a meeting with the Federal Government to Vangaurd on Wednesday.

He said, "Yes, we received a letter from the Ministry of Labour inviting us to a meeting on Friday. Although for us, we don't know what those meetings are for because what needs to be done now is not meetings.

"But in our tradition, (if) you invite us to a meeting, we will come to listen to you.

"But we have passed the stage of meetings upon meetings what needs to be done is for the bill to be sent to the National Assembly, but we will attend the meeting."

Dino Melaye’s Brother Raises Fears Over Senator’s Whereabouts

Posted: 02 Jan 2019 03:36 PM PST

Senator Dino Melaye
Samuel Melaye, brother to Dino Melaye, Senator representing Kogi west, has kicked against the police siege at the lawmaker's residence.

The police have been at Melaye's Abuja residence since last week, seeking to arrest him over alleged culpable homicide.

Speaking during a Channels TV programme on Wednesday, Samuel said his brother's whereabouts have remained unknown following the siege.

Asked by the anchor about the lawmaker's whereabouts, he responded: "I cannot confirm categorically because they have not allowed anybody into that house. They shut the house, they are the ones opening the gate.

"My parents are supposed to be in that house as we speak. Dino is not the only occupant of that house, there are staff."

According to him, "the case they are raising against us happened in July; I was there in the car, the policemen shot at us. I have six bullets riddled on that car. So how can they turn around all of a sudden and say we are the ones shooting at the police?"

He added that the senator's orderlies have been taken away since "over seven months ago."

"And because of the injustice on a daily basis, we cannot believe anything they say or do. I believe they are out to harm my brother," he added.

"They went into the compound, arrested the security man, beat him up, the cleaner and bodyguard the same thing."

2019: Ex-SGF, Babachir Lawal Give Reasons APC Candidates Will Lose Elections

Posted: 02 Jan 2019 03:27 PM PST

Mr. David Babachir Lawal,
David Babachir Lawal, Ex- Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF),  has said that voters would elect candidates on their personal merit in 2019, unlike in 2015.

"In 2015, voters were asked to vote APC in all elections. That gave the party a massive momentum and all its candidates were returned elected.

"The situation will be different in 2019. Many governors and senators have not performed. They have not replicated President Muhammadu Buhari's performance. Such people will be voted out," Babachir told newsmen on Wednesday in Yola.

According to him, voters were now more critical and will only elect people with credible records.

Babachir further stated that Nigeria could only move forward if credible people were elected as leaders, saying that no elected leader would be allowed to ride to power on Buhari's credible outing.

2019 Election: PDP Raises Fresh Allegations Against Buhari, APC, INEC

Posted: 02 Jan 2019 03:21 PM PST

Mr. Kola Ologbondiyan
Mr. Kola Ologbondiyan, the Director of Media and Publicity of the main opposition party, the People's Democratic Party (PDP), Presidential Campaign Organization, has revealed alleged fresh plot by the Muhammadu Buhari presidency and the All Progressives Congress (APC) to compromise the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to rig the 2019 general elections.

The party, in a statement signed on Wednesday, warned INEC Chairman, Prof. Yakubu Mahmood, not to compromise the electoral guideline and pave the way for the alteration of the results of the 2019 general election to favour President Buhari.

He urged Yakubu to note that Nigerians are already aware of the pressure being placed on him allegedly by the Buhari presidency and APC seeking to force the commission to drop the display of results at the polling units as well as the electronic transmission of polled figures to INEC server from its guidelines.

Ologbondiyan added: "The Buhari Presidency is desperate to remove these requirements because the display of results at the polling units ensures that results posted at all levels remain those originally announced at the various polling units, while the electronic transmission to INEC server ensures that the results from the polling centers are not tampered with. PDP also demands that INEC allows both local and international observers to its situation room to ensure that the final figures are not tampered with.

"The APC and Buhari Presidency are mounting pressure on INEC to drop the requirements so as to pave way for their planned alteration of results and allocation of fictitious figures to President Buhari during the collation process.

"Prof. Yakubu must not succumb to the pressure of the Buhari Presidency, because doing so will definitely set him on a collision course with Nigerians.

"This demand has become imperative in the face of allegations and public apprehensions that the INEC Chairman is being offered humongous sums of money, running into billions of naira, by agents of the APC and the cabal at the Buhari Presidency to accede to their demands.

"Information at our disposal further reveals that the INEC Chairman has been under pressure from this group said to be coordinated by President Buhari's blood relation in INEC, who, we are surprised, Prof Yakubu still allows around himself.

"It has further come to our knowledge that the INEC Chairman is contemplating the deployment of past National Youth Service Commission (NYSC) members for the 2019 election.

"The PPCO totally rejects this ignoble intention which is a ploy to use APC card-carrying members as polls officers.

"It is very instructive to state that the on going ASUU strike has not by any measure evacuated its members from the surface of the earth.

"Therefore, if INEC sought to use the members of ASUU for the 2019 elections, the on going strike will not be an excuse to deploy APC members."

2019: Why Atiku, PDP must ‘throw-in towel’, endorse Buhari for second term – Keyamo

Posted: 02 Jan 2019 03:13 PM PST

Mr. Festus Keyamo, SAN
Mr. Festus Keyamo, SAN, the spokesperson of President Muhammadu Buhari Campaign Organisation, on Wednesday challenged the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar to "throw-in the towel" and endorse President Muhammadu Buhari for a second term.

He said this while accusing Abubakar of resorting to "desperation and deceit" in his campaign.

Keyamo called on Abubakar and the PDP to apologise to Nigerians for spreading false tales.

He was reacting to PDP's allegations that Buhari was diverting funds meant for the procurement of military equipment to finance his 2019 re-election campaign.

In a statement, Keyamo said: "The widely published refutal by investors in Etisalat and Keystone Bank that the family members of President Buhari have nothing to do with both companies is another indication of the fast-collapsing campaign of the Presidential Candidate of the PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and that of the PDP.

"The result of the fact-check, which was published in some news outlets, clearly shows the depth of desperation, deceit and debauchery to which the Atiku campaign has sunk.

"They have no moral compass, no scruples, no direction in their present attempt to smear just everyone in sight in order to run a campaign of 'we-are-all-corrupt.'

"Rather than respect the feelings of Nigerians by offering clear-cut responses to straight-forward allegations of tax-evasion, grand corruption in and out of office, impending sealed indictment waiting for him in the US, Atiku Abubakar has decided to drag the world down with him as he goes down in a blaze of infamy. He has decided to go wild with wild, unsubstantiated allegations against the President and Vice President.

" This is the classic hallmark of a sinking campaign boat, clutching at straws, as Nigerians have woken up to the realisation that these are deceitful people who have nothing to offer…

"We call on Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and the PDP to apologize to Nigerians and especially the family of the President for adopting this unwholesome tactics and telling tales by moonlight that have clearly backfired.

"Instead of making a mockery of a serious campaign with such infantile lies, Atiku Abubakar should admit it is all over for him and the PDP, throw in the towel and endorse the candidacy of President Buhari."

EPL: Victor Moses Gives Insight Into Expectations For 2019

Posted: 02 Jan 2019 03:05 PM PST

Victor Moses
Victor Moses, former Super Eagles winger, is confident that the New Year will offer his career a fresh start, after finding regular game time, hard to come by at Chelsea.

Moses had a fine campaign with Chelsea in 2018 playing 38 times for the Blues who lifted the English FA Cup.

Since then, he has gone from being one of Antonio Conte's main man in the right wing-back role to almost a forgotten man under Maurizio Sarri.

His future at Chelsea looks very bleak as he has made just two substitute appearances in the Premier League, with another two showings off the bench in the Europa League and one start in the Carabao Cup.

"2018 was a year to remember and now it's time to make 2019 even better. Happy New Year everyone," Moses tweeted.

Moses has been linked with a loan move away from Stamford Bridge with several English clubs keen.

It's Just Wisdom, Not Because I Am Afraid Says Dino Melaye Over Police Siege

Posted: 02 Jan 2019 02:45 PM PST

Senator Dino Melaye
Embattled Nigerian lawmaker Senator Dino Melaye who has been tweeting from his hiding place, has said he is not hiding out of fear, but only applying wisdom.

Dino Melaye referenced a part of Bible where a certain Prophet Elijah had to run and hide from King Ahab despite being one of the most courageous prophets at the time.

He referred to himself as the Modern Elijah that needs to hide, not out of fear, but out of wisdom.

"The Bible record prophet Elijah to be among one of the strongest prophets that lived, but he went to mount Carmel to hide when king Ahab sought him to kill him cos of the way he boldly declared the truth. There is a difference with being scared and being wise" he said
