Former YBNL star Viktoh beaten to a pulp by men of the Nigerian Police Force

Posted: 03 Jan 2019 11:30 PM PST

It's just a few days into the new year and it already looks like the men of the Nigerian Police Force aren't taking a 'chill pill' on their high handedness as they brutally assault YBNL's Viktoh.

According to a post on blogger, Instablog9ja page, the rapper was on his way to the Afrika Shrine for Zlatan's concert when he was assaulted by the men of the police force.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, January 2, 2019, at the Alpha Beach Road Igbo Efon, Lekki. It is not clear what led to the circumstances behind Vitoh's assault but from the photos shared on social media, he was severely beaten.

Viktoh is yet to release a statement but we sure know that this is not the last we will be hearing from this story. Trust us as we will keep you posted as this story develops. Let's just say someone has to call the men of the Nigerian Police to order and while we are waiting for them to also release a statement concerning this story.

Recall that a few weeks ago, Nollywood actor, Gideon Okeke faced a similar fate in the hands of some police officers stationed on the Lekki-Epe axis of Lagos Island.

Gideon Okeke seeks justice after experiencing police brutality in Lagos

Gideon Okeke back in December 2018, said he was ready to explore the privileges available in the Nigerian law in pursuit of justice following an experience of police brutality in Lagos. A video he posted on Instagram on Sunday, December 9, 2018, reveals an injury to his chin. He submitted a piece of evidence after the assault also suffered by a female motorist whose vehicle collided with his.

According to the actor they were both attacked after he sought help from policemen around the Lekki 1 Roundabout. He identifies four officers as the persons responsible for the assault.

"Good evening. My name is Gideon Okeke. An actor and a responsible citizen of the city of Lagos. I will like to draw the attention of the office of the highest authority that this message may concern. There has recently been a threat on my life and my economy by men of the Lagos Division of the Nigerian Police Force for a minor accident that happened between myself and another driver Mrs Mosunmola Ilori.

"Yesterday at about 8 pm at the Lekki Roundabout, myself and Mrs Mosunmola Ilori alongside her niece were brutally manhandled by men of the Maroko Police Station after an accident that happened between us for which we were both settled and in agreement. The results are what you see on my face."

The actor confirms that the nasty experience prevented him from attending the Johnnie, Jazz & Whisky (JJW), Live Music Concert at the GET Arena, Oniru, expected to hold on the evening of the incident.

SL33K

Afrovibes crooner, SL33K, is fresh out of a rebrand phase that saw him upgrade his stage name – a decision which many adjudged to be timely, in that it will further solidify the imprint of his musical uniqueness, and his influence in promoting this style of urban African sound from the grassroots.

2019: Political Parties Kicks As INEC Names Buhari’s Niece Official To Announce Presidential Result

Posted: 03 Jan 2019 04:04 PM PST

Mrs Amina Zakari
The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) has declared the appointment of President Muhammadu Buhari's niece, Amina Zakari as the Chairperson of Presidential Election Collation Centre as a plot by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to rig the 2019 election in favour of the nation's leader.

The appointment came just after INEC denied that it was being pressured by the Presidency and the ruling APC to rig the election.

But CUPP said the denial had now fallen flat on its face and exposed the Electoral Commission as a part and parcel of the rigging machinery of the APC.

CUPP spokesman, Imo Ugochinyere, said: "The desperation of the President must be reined in now before it is too late. We categorically reject this appointment and will consider very drastic measures including pulling out of the peace accord which does not repose a commensurate responsibility of the President to allow INEC conduct a credible, free and fair election.

"Her appointment is a direct invitation to anarchy and must be reversed without delay. We have it on good authority that the INEC Chairman is being blackmailed by the Presidency with investigation reports of the EFCC which discovered massive corruption when the Chairman held sway as Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund.

"This system of cultivating corruption is the main stay of the Buhari led government. In Osun State, the same system was deployed with a governorship candidate who traded his support for freedom from prosecution. It is clear that the Presidency has successfully put a leash on the neck of the INEC Chairman and he has by this appointment relinquished a most critical element of his job as the Presidential election returning officer to an interested party.

"With a compromised Police Inspector General of Police whose continued illegal stay is a threat to national security and a compromised Chairmanof INEC, CUPP hereby calls on coalition member candidates for Senate and House of Representatives to gird their loins as they are going to be the first line of defence on the Election Day to stop these election riggers."

2019 PRESIDENCY: Atiku Raises Alarm Over INEC’s Decision To Use Incident Forms

Posted: 03 Jan 2019 03:40 PM PST

Alhaji Atiku Abubakar
Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the Presidential candidate of the main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission to adhere to its promise not to use incident forms for the 2019 general election.

Abubakar, in a statement issued by his Media Adviser, Paul Ibe on Thursday in Abuja, said that he was worried about reports contrary to promises made by INEC that it would not use the incident forms.

He said that any change in the decision by INEC to reverse to use of incident forms was unacceptable to the PDP and to him.

According to him, any decision to use incident forms in the Feb. 16 election is to encourage rigging, Daily Post reports.

Abubakar said that data from the 2015 elections showed that 75 per cent of the almost 14 million people who voted without biometric accreditation in 2015 were linked to President Muhammadu Buhari.

"There are no reliable and accurate means of knowing who those voters were and whether they were genuine voters or sham voters.

"This disproportionate number of voters who voted without biometric accreditation in 2015 affected the integrity of those elections and we hold the INEC to its oft-repeated promise not to use anything but the Smart Card Readers and PVCs for the 2019 elections,'' he said.

Abubakar said that the commission should remember that the world was watching and that Nigerians were alert to see if the present Chairman and board of INEC would place national interest above narrow interest.

He reminded the Chairman of the INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, of his promise to Nigerians at the Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room National Stakeholders' Forum on Elections which held in Abuja on Dec.10.

He said that Yakubu, at the event, assured Nigerians that the smart card reader had become an integral part of the electoral process and would be deployed for the conduct of the 2019 general elections.

Abubakar said that at ₦143 billion, it was safe to say that more than enough funds were appropriated for the INEC to acquire and distribute Smart Card Readers, hence no reason for change of decision.

He said that the job of the INEC was to give Nigerians a level playing field and also conduct an election that reflects the will of the people.

"We once again want to sound the alarm that only the strict use of Smart Card Readers and Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) can guarantee free, fair and credible elections that will be accepted by Nigerians and the international community,'' he said.

2019: See Reasons Yoruba Will Vote For Buhari, APC – Campaign Director, Oke

Posted: 03 Jan 2019 03:28 PM PST

Olushola Oke
Olusola Oke, South-West Director, Buhari/Osinbajo Campaign Organisation says the region would support President Muhammadu Buhari's re-election in the forthcoming general elections.

He told newsmen in Ibadan on Thursday after a private meeting with Gov. Abiola Ajimobi in his office.

Oke said that the campaign was about power residing in the south west, adding that the region would continue to be critical in the determination of the leadership of Nigeria.

"Let PDP win and power will depart from the South-west, let APC win and power will remain in the South-west", NAN quoted him as saying.

"Power defines many things, we know many projects ongoing in the South-west and we don't want them to stop. Yoruba will go for Buhari," he said.

He also said that the region was very critical and to APC because of its voting strength and role in the emergence of Buhari's government.

"We have a pride of place and we want to build on that. In this election, the Yorubas will decide who will be the President of this country.

"We understand Nigeria and the dynamics more than any other region, it is clear that there are two options.

"One option is to go back to Egypt and other option is to go ahead to Canaan land."

He said that the problem of the country was lack of proper foundation for transformation, saying the Buhari administration had in the past three years devoted its time in laying a solid foundation.

"Why many Nigerians cannot see it is because we are laying the foundation.

"It is like when you want to build a house, people who are walking past may not see the foundation until you put a super structure there.

"It is now the time to put that structure and only those who are involved in the foundation will understand it.

"If you allow a new person, what that person will put on it will be different from the design."

Oke said that it was the reason why Buhari must remain the president to take the nation to the next level, adding the role of Yorubas was very important.

He stressed that the Yorubas knew what they were doing and well informed to be distracted from the path of honour they had undertaken.

"You can be assured that the votes for Buhari will increase. When we didn't have APC governors all through, he emerged victorious.

"Now that we have APC governors everywhere in Yoruba land, I assure you that the votes can only increase, this time around, and we will sustain it."

Oke said that divisions among Yorùbá leaders were not about Buhari, but individual interests.

"If what is good is not available in quantum, there is bound to be conflicts

According to him, the tune of the dissent voices is that, they will vote for Buhari.

"So we are unanimous on the direction we are going. That is, the direction of sustaining the present system which we know is good for us.

He expressed the belief that irrespective of the apparent divisions, the foundation laid by present administration in the country would be sustained.

2019: PDP Reacts On Appionment Of Buhari’s Niece, Amina Zakari Official To Announce Presidential Result By INEC

Posted: 03 Jan 2019 03:02 PM PST

Kola Ologbondiyan
The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, on Thursday reacted as the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, appointed President Muhammadu Buhari's niece, Amina Zakari as its head of Collation Center for the 2019 elections.

By her new appointment, Zakari, who was once the Commission's Director of Operations, will be responsible for announcing the result of the presidential election.

Reacting to her appointment, PDP reiterated its recent claim that President Muhammadu Buhari was determined to rig himself back into power, hence the appointment of Zakari.

In a press statement issued by its spokesperson, Kola Ologbondiyan, the former ruling party said: "We have called you up again today to alert Nigerians of another heinous machination by the Buhari Presidency and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to subvert the will of the people and rig the February 16, Presidential election.

"You will recall that we have been raising the flag on how the Buhari Presidency, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and some individuals at the echelon of INEC have been seeking ways to compromise our electoraL processes and open the way for the allocation of fictitious votes to President Muhammadu Buhari, having realized that he cannot win in a credible, free and fair polls.

"Today, we have been informed that the Chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, apparently in furtherance of the plots to rig the Presidential election, has appointed Mrs. Amina Zakari, a blood relation (niece) of the APC candidate, President Muhammadu Buhari, as the Chairperson of INEC Advisory Committee and Presidential election Collation Center Committee.

"The Peoples Democratic Party Presidential Campaign Organization (PPCO) outrightly, vehemently and unequivocally rejects, in its entirety, the appointment of Mrs. Amina Zakari, President Buhari's blood relation, as the head of the collation of results, in the same election in which his uncle, President Buhari, as a candidate, has displayed a huge desperation to win.

"The appointment of Mrs. Amina Zakari, who had been openly accused in various quarters as being the link person between INEC and the Buhari Presidency in their schemes to rig the election for President Buhari, constitutes a direct violence against the Presidential election and the PDP will not, in any way, whatsoever, accept it.

"This is the same Amina Zakari, who headed the ICT Department of INEC at the time that department was accused of manipulating the INEC voter register to accommodate fictitious, underage and alien voters, particularly, in remote areas where they plan to allocate and announce conjured votes for President Buhari and the APC.

"It will interest Nigerians to note that this is the same Amina Zakari that was alleged to have played some roles in the 2018 governorship election in Osun state, where the electoral processes were flagrantly abused.

"In appointing Mrs. Amina Zakari to head the collation of this Presidential election, Prof. Yakubu has confirmed that he has been compromised and that he has already succumbed to pressure by the Buhari Presidency and APC to open the way for the self-succession of President Buhari.

"The fact remains that there is no way Amina Zakari will not allocate votes to her blood relation, President Buhari, whom Nigerians have indicated clearly that they are not ready to return to office as President.

"With Amina Zakari at the head of results collation, there is no way votes cast by Nigerians will count.

"We, therefore, call on all Nigerians and particularly the National Peace Committee to note that with the appointment of Amina Zakari, as head the collation of Presidential results, the INEC Chairman is setting the stage for a very huge political crisis, which is capable of derailing our democratic process.

"We also urge the United Nations and other global democratic institutions to take copious note of this noxious appointment by the INEC Chairman.

"If the INEC Chairman wants a peaceful Presidential election, he should, with the speed of light, reverse himself on this appointment.

"In fact, the PPCO reiterates its position that for us to have a peaceful election, Mrs. Amina Zakari should not be seen anywhere near any of the 2019 election processes, not to talk of being involved in the collation of Presidential results."

PDP, however, assured that it remained "committed to a peaceful and credible process, but we will never, in any way, allow anybody to use any means, under any guise whatsoever, to rig us out in this election. Not after it is clear that Nigerians have attained a consensus to rally behind our Presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, as their next President.

"All we ask for is a free, fair, credible and transparent electoral process in which the votes of Nigerians will not only count but will be seen to have counted.

"Like Mr. President said during his 2019 budget presentation at the National Assembly, the world is watching us," the statement added.

INSECURITY: Yari Give Reasons He Might Quit As Governor

Posted: 03 Jan 2019 02:42 PM PST

Gov. Abdulaziz Yari
Abdulaziz Yari  the Governor of  Zamfara State, on Thursday said that if declaration of state of emergency in his state will solve the security problems, he is ready to quit as Governor.

Yari made this admission, while speaking with State House correspondents, after a closed-door meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Noting that the security situation in the state has improved, the Governor said the bandits responsible for the insecurity, breed their cattle in the forest and strike occasionally.

While stating that he met the President over the security situation in the state, Yari said the issue of the armed banditry was being exaggerated.

"There is no place being occupied by the armed bandits in Zamfara state. They live and operate in the forest. They strike and run. Most of the camps are known by locals," he said.

On his support for declaration of emergency in Zamfara, he said he was not playing politics with it, saying "I was not being political, we are talking about human lives here. If that is what will stop this thing, I am ready to step down."

Asked whether he discussed the declaration of emergency with Buhari, he said, "not at all".ht Quit As Governor.

2019 PRESIDENCY: Buhari’s Niece, Amina Zakari To Announce Election Results

Posted: 03 Jan 2019 02:30 PM PST

Mrs Amina Zakari.
The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, on Thursday inaugurated an advisory committee for the 2019 general elections.

The advisory committee is headed by Air Vice Marshall Ahmed Tijani, Muazu while the 2019 National Collation Center Committee is headed by Amina Zakari.

By her new appointment, Zakari will be responsible for announcing the results of the presidential election.

The former INEC Director of Operations, who hails from Daura, Katsina State, President Muhammadu Buhari's hometown was last year moved to Health and Welfare arm of the Commission, following public outcry.

Speaking during the inauguration, INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu said the committee will be responsible for the collation of results, Daily Post reports.

He said the committee will operate from the International Conference Centre in Abuja, where results of the Presidential election will be announced.

"It will serve as the secretariat for collation of results and venue for briefing of international observers and the media," he said.

Reacting to the announcement, a former Director of strategy/Communication under ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Jackson Ude in a tweet wrote: "Buhari's sister in INEC, Amina Zakari, who was removed as Director of Operations and moved to Health and Welfare, has now been made Director, National Collation."

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had last year alleged that Buhari's presidency was plotting to use Zakari to rig the 2019 presidential election.

Against this backdrop, the former ruling party had called on the Chairman of INEC, Prof. Yakubu Mahmood, not to "succumb to pressure by the Presidency, to return Mrs. Amina Zakari as Director of Operations."

5 Retail Trends and Predictions For 2019

Posted: 03 Jan 2019 01:19 PM PST

Retailing
2019 is here, and if you're in retail, you're likely wondering what the next 12 months will bring.

What must merchants do to win? Will the retail industry prosper and thrive? To help answer these questions, we've put together a handful of trends and predictions that we think retailers should pay close attention to in the coming months.
Francesca Nicasio, the Retail Expert at Vend, have a look at what's in store for retailers in 2019 and beyond:

1. Retailers will need to invest more in their workforce
2019 will be a tough year for companies that underpay and overwork their employees. The retail employment landscape is shifting; hiring is on the rise, and the labour market is tighter and much more competitive.

Then there's the fact that the role of a retail associate calls for more than just sales and store admin. These days, retail associates must evolve from being "salespeople" to consultants and experts.

This TIME article said it best: the retail worker of the future is "cool, charismatic, and better paid."

It's no longer enough to train employees on your products and store policies — these things are just the bare minimum. You also need to train them to relate better to shoppers. Your associates should have the ability to connect with customers in a memorable way.

2. Retailers that offer compelling in-store experiences will flourish
In many ways, retail stores are no longer about "location, location, location"; they're about "experience, experience, experience."

People don't flock to retail locations because it's convenient (some still do, but because of e-commerce, "convenience" usually means shopping online). Modern consumers make the effort to head to retail shops because of the experience they get in the store.

The "right" customer experience strategy will depend on your products, your store, and your shoppers. It's essential that you know all three like the back of your hand so you can come up with the best offerings possible.

3. Choice and flexibility — particularly at the last mile — will be more important than ever
According to PSFK, "82% of consumers say that they are more likely or much more likely to purchase for a brand that offers multiple delivery options." This should come as no surprise, as we already know that shoppers have higher demands than ever, particularly when it comes to ordering fulfilment. Things like free 2-day shipping, same day delivery, and in-store pickup are becoming table stakes, and retailers need to keep up.

4. Back office solutions and innovations will be at the forefront for many retailers
The backend of your retail operations may not be as sexy as customer-facing initiatives, but in 2019, you will need to invest in your back office in order to thrive.

So, how can retailers improve their back-office operations? You can start by evaluating your processes and technologies to identify areas for improvement. Specifically, are there any inefficient tasks or steps that are preventing you from providing the best customer experience possible?

For instance, if you're unable to offer a seamless shopping experience between your e-commerce site and brick-and-mortar store, then perhaps it's time to integrate your online and offline systems.

5. Retailers will turn to new metrics to gauge performance
Modern shopping behaviour — e.g., the practice of trying on products offline and purchasing online — are blurring the lines between online and offline retail. If you're selling on multiple channels, you can bet that your presence on one channel will influence sales and brand perception in another.

Bottom line
Self-development author and speaker Brian Tracy famously said, "In a time of rapid change, standing still is the most dangerous course of action."

Those words are more relatable than ever, especially in the retail industry. The landscape is evolving, and your survival depends on how well you adapt. We hope the predictions in this piece point you in the right direction and give you ideas on what you need to change in your business and how to get there.

On 30 January 2019, IT News Africa will host Digital Retail Forum 2019 at the Hilton Sandton, Johannesburg, South Africa.

Themed Harnessing Digital Technology for Next-Level Customer Centred Retailing, DRF2019 will focus on how emerging technologies such as Ai, IoT, drones, digital payment solutions, new eCommerce models and mobility are disrupting the retail sector. This event will also delve into how to survive by harnessing new technology to improve both Customer Experience and Operational Efficiency.

A variety of professionals will visit #DigitalRetailForum looking for products and services that will help them increase productivity, reduce costs, attract more customers, improve customer experience, enhance security and sell more – whether they are small independent retailers or large retail groups.

2019 ELECTION: APC Vice Chairman Calls For Sanction Of Babachir Lawal

Posted: 03 Jan 2019 01:23 PM PST

Mr Babacir Lawal

Alhaji Umar Duhu, the National Vice Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, North East, has urged the party to sanction the immediate past Secretary to the Government of the Federation(SGF), Mr Babacir Lawal for anti-party activities

According to a Daily Post report, Duhu made the call Thursday in Yola while reacting to a statement by Lawan that the incumbent governor of Adamawa who is the party's gubernatorial candidate, Muhammadu Bindow is not eligible to contest and would lose the 2019 election.

Duhu said: "As leader of the party what should preoccupy somebody's mind at all point is to ensure that his or her party wins election at all levels.

"Once primaries or conventions are conducted and winners emerge, what is paramount for loyal party man is to accept the outcome and embrace the person nominated to fly the flag of the party.

"Imagine somebody at the level of Lawan who succeeded me as national vice chairman of APC and was even appointed SGF coming out to say APC will loose the state if Gov. Bindow is fielded as candidate. This is sad and preposterous."

According to him, the action of Lawan was tantamount to anti party activity which is a punishable act under the laws of APC.

"Oshiomole should forthwith direct the state executive branch of Adamawa to relieve him (Lawan) of membership of the party until a convention is held for his expulsion," Duhu said.

He said Gov. Bindow's administration had performed well and is fully qualified and has been cleared by INEC to contest.

"Gov. Bindow is capable, qualified to contest election and God willing he is going to win," Duhu said.

Recall that the former SGF (Lawan) had in a press briefing Wednesday in Yola, declared that if Gov. Bindow, whose eligibility is being challenged in court is fielded, APC would loose Adamawa governorship election.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: UEFA Confirms Manchester City May Face Expulsion From Competition

Posted: 03 Jan 2019 12:51 PM PST

Manchester City
UEFA have confirmed Manchester City could face a Champions League ban, should allegations of financial manipulation be proved.

Both UEFA and the Premier League are investigating City, after emails leaked by German publication, Der Spiegel appeared to show £59.5million reported as coming from sponsors Etihad airline, was actually from owners Abu Dhabi United Group.

If proved, the allegations would amount to a breach of UEFA's financial fair play rules and according to the European governing body's head of independent Club Financial Control Body, Yves Leterme, could lead to the "heaviest punishment" for the Premier League champions.

Speaking to Belgian outlet Sport and Strategy, Leterme said: "If it is true what has been written, there might be a serious problem. This can lead to the heaviest punishment: exclusion from the Uefa competitions.

"If the information is correct, this possibly goes against truthful reporting. The financial fair play rules are based on a system of declaration, three months after the clubs have closed their accounts, they have to deposit their figures.

"Then we do random checks on the truthfulness of those figures. The accounts are examined and approved internally and externally."
