Tunde Kelani: 'Why I haven’t made any movie in 4 years'

Posted: 08 Jan 2019 12:00 AM PST

Nollywood Fil Maker Tunde Kelani

It is no longer news that top cinematographer and director, Tunde Kelani, recently announced his resignation as the chairman and member of the National Film and Video Censors Board.

In a chat with Punch Kelani spoke on his plans after quitting NFVCB.

He said,

"My plan is to continue working. Being a member of NFVCB wasn't a full-time job; we were just expected to hold meetings three times a year. As a matter of fact, there was no time I left my job as a filmmaker. But for the last four years, I have not released any new production. I have movies I can release but it wouldn't be wise to do that because it will be pirated within 24 hours. It is not sustainable to keep working for pirates because we invest a lot in our movies."

Tunde Kelani

"Piracy has affected the traditional DVD distribution network; so, we have to look towards technology and other platforms. This year, I think we will have solutions." He said, "Being a member of NFVCB wasn't financially rewarding as most thought; it was a service to the country. We were supposed to formulate policies that would support the movie industry.

I resigned because I felt I could do more as a stakeholder. I felt I would be more useful to the industry if I was not part of the board."

80-year-old woman rapped by 40-year-old man

A 40-year-old man has been sentenced to jail for allegedly raping an 80-year-old woman.

Jimoh Oyemomi was arraigned before an Osun State Magistrates' Court sitting in Modakeke on two counts of rape and assault.

Police prosecuting officer, Inspector Ona Glory, said the suspect assaulted and raped the victim on a farm at Onibambu village, near Modakeke around 2:30pm on December 23, 2018.

He told the court that Oyemomi unlawfully had carnal knowledge with 80-year-old Sangolana without her consent, adding that he also assaulted the victim by strangling her while he was committing the act.

He said the offences contravened sections 351 and 358 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Osun State, 2003.

The accused pleaded guilty to the first count of rape, but not guilty to the second count of assault.

In his ruling, magistrate A. Famuyide, passed a guilty verdict on Oyemomi for the first count of rape after he had admitted to committing the crime. He then sentenced him to three years in prison.

Nigerian vixen, Wendy, who faked her death and accused her boyfriend of ritual, finally speaks

Posted: 07 Jan 2019 10:30 PM PST

Nigerian video vixen, Dancer: Wendy

A video vixen Wendy wittingly fakes her death in order to distract boyfriend from concluding plans to use her for a dark ritual.

Nigeria does not want to see your shortcomings, be 'polished' and fake

Posted: 07 Jan 2019 10:00 PM PST

Even employers place a premium on appearance. If you've seen sensational movies about smartness and how people fall prey to eloquent and finessed up con men, you might understand this premise.

Fake lifestyle in Nigeria

The human mind is construed to decide upon certain fundamentals, first of which is appearance and outlook of affluence or wealth either in looks, intellect, accessories and some other things you can think of. Yes, first impressions last longer, but is that an exclusively positive disposition? We shall find out.
Everything is a centrifugal representation of a deeper phenomenon. No matter how much you want to be simple, a deeper meaning lies in everything and such explanation or examination will almost certainly arouse an 'it's not that deep' comment from people, but believe me; sometimes, it is.

One of those 'not-so-simple' concepts is one of how human beings create a standard and have expectations that aid pretence and fakeness, only to then complain about it. We have a subconscious standard we hold people to, so people who want to approach us, they adhere to that standard to soothe us and get their way, even if they have to lie about it.

A short story…

In February 2017, I quit Law Practice after a really short stint in what I think should be my last at a myopic or monofocal law firm. In no time, I got an interview at a multifaceted, private company in Ikoyi, Lagos. It suited my dreams and I was excited by my prospects; despite their request for a second class upper graduate and three-year experience of which I had neither, they still contacted me.

I got there and I spent a little over an hour with the HR Manager/Interviewer chatting on everything; from the most meaningful, substantiated topics to the most random topics on my computer literacy and back to the most analytical and evaluative — I never knew an interview could be that interesting.

Five minutes to the end, amidst some lighthearted chatter on pop culture and art critique, she explicitly told me I was at the top of her list and then requested my grade and degree. When I told her, the disappointment was evident on her face. She told me in concise terms, "Not having a 2:1 just knocked you out… How did not you have a 2:1? You seem so smart…"

Immediately, I was forced to ask her quite sardonically, "Does my grade really matter? Shouldn't my capability which you can attest to supersede any vain demand for higher grades knowing that grading isn't a level playing field across different types of Universities in Nigeria?"

"I know, but this company has a standard. I can only try and fight for you, but I can't make any promises," she said. I left the place with those words ringing in my head. I still remember them because as stoic as I might seem to many, I was scarred by them till God healed me. In some ways, that awakened me to the sad realities of employing grades over ability, promoting the premium on grades than on self-development.

While in a lot of cases, the person with the best grades will be the best, the grades will not always paint a picture of intelligence. The standard is just to make the job of recruiters and human resource Managers easy. In a way, it's also reasonable as anyone can seem attractive on a CV, only to pee the bed during an interview session, but however reasonable the system seems, it robs people of opportunity because of bad grades.

It's funny how nobody has thought of a world where Universities start churning out a lot of First Class and Second Class Upper students on a yearly basis — as private Nigerian Universities currently do — because they know good grades obtain and carry a premium on the labour market. No matter how bad or herculean the task is, recruiters must do better.

When the labour market is saturated with good grades and qualifications, maybe we would all get sane.

Fast forward; January 2018…

After a stint at a USAID funded project, I got an interesting offer in Abuja; nothing major, but the prospects were interesting. Despite taking a slight pay cut, I moved. There, I was open to an almost different world of vanity, lies, and deception as part of everyday life from people I came across.

Transcorp Hilton, Abuja

Everyone wanted to seem more than his means, so they labour to position themselves as opulent and spendthrift to attract opportunities. Anytime I go to Transcorp, I see an assortment of clandestine pretence from people who go there to get noticed by the rich. They make fake calls, order drinks and food they cannot afford, and get spaces that drain their humble accounts — grown men.

In truth, I don't blame them. If they looked like themselves, their targets; the key holders to corridors of wealth, debauchery and power wouldn't bat an eyelid at them. As such, I used to avoid the place like a plague unless my Ukrainian colleague, Nidal gravely needed me.

Should being yourself not be enough?

The advent of both scenarios is the painful subscription by humanity to perception and not a test for substance — which should be the target. We prefer when they look good without actually caring whether they are actually good even when they don't look good.

It's why on social media, girls pursue opulent-looking guys in droves only to sell these guys 'a canoli' and come back to cry blue murder. It's why a Twitter guy is attracted to any seeming intellectual female without testing her substance — especially when she's beautiful. It's a sad torrent of events; a tidal malformation of outcomes that continue to rid the world of substantiated humans.

It's one of the reasons why wealth remains within the top 1% of the world because access is easily granted to bloodlines that can afford the price of wealth.

Sometimes it pains me how people can't examine people — or maybe feel they can't afford to examine people like recruiters who fear the time and effort it will require to actually test people who might be good for the job but without the grades. Finding a diamond in the rough requires dealing with clutter.

Is it really true that what looks good is usually good and what doesn't look tasty is usually bad?

I'm swayed to agree, but I think not. Despite strong evidence to the affirmative, life really isn't that simplistic. While looking rich or having evidence of intellect seems persuasive for judgment, the argument isn't absolute and chances should be given to the unseemly.

I don't claim perfection, but I'd like everyone at least give chances of success to people who don't seem or look like they deserve it to aid chance creation, diversity, less stiff ideals and cut fakeness a bit.

We shouldn't be so driven by an outlook that attracts endorsement that people feel the need to be vain and put in extra effort to seem worthy.

In the end, not everyone will think as I do — I grew up in a working-class family. Maybe I just have a pipe dream.

African Union Speaks On Failed Coup Attempt In Gabon

Posted: 07 Jan 2019 04:37 PM PST

Mr. Moussa  Mahamat
Mr. Moussa  Mahamat Chairperson of African Union (AU) Commission, on Monday condemned a failed coup attempt in Gabon.

"The AU strongly condemns the coup attempt this morning in Gabon,'' Mahamat said in a statement via twitter.

He also stressed the 55-member pan African bloc's firm stance against unconstitutional moves, saying that "I reaffirm the AU's total rejection of all unconstitutional change of power."

Gabon, soon after the failed attempt, revealed the arrest of four soldiers, who were said to have attempted to take control of the national radio station.

Soldiers entered the national radio station in Libreville around 4 a.m. local time to read a statement in which they announced the setting up of a "national council of the restoration".

In the statement, Ondo Kelly, lieutenant of the Republican Guard, announced that they were disappointed by the message delivered on Dec. 31, by President Ali Bongo, which "rather heightened doubts about his ability to assume the office of President of the Republic".

The lieutenant later managed to flee but four other soldiers were arrested by the military following an intervention.

"The situation is under control and order will be completely restored in two or three hours," said the government spokesman.

President Ali Bongo is currently recovering in Morocco, after suffering a stroke in late October 2018.

In the message he gave to the nation on Dec. 31, he expressed gladness that the condition of his health was improving.

2019: Nuhu Ali, Aminu Rara, others storm Adamawa as Gov. Bindow kicks off re-election campaign

Posted: 07 Jan 2019 04:18 PM PST

Governor Jibrilla Bindow
The Governor of Adamawa State, Jibrilla Bindow on Monday kicked-off his governorship re-election campaign.

The flag-off came several weeks after two other governorship candidates: Umaru Fintiri of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Emmanuel Bello of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) had been campaigning in many parts of the state.

The event, which took place at the Ribadu Square in Jimeta, Yola, was attended by top Hausa actors and musicians.

The flag off had popular Kannywood entertainers like Nuhu Ali and Aminu Rara in attendance, Daily Post reports.

Bindow goes into the governorship re-election campaign as a favourite to win the March 2019 election on the strength of his performance as the governor whose first term since 2015 has been marked by the construction of good roads in the state capital and across other urban towns of the state, among other indices of achievement.

He, however, faces stiff opposition even from within his All Progressives Congress (APC) where his two co-aspirants, Nuhu Ribadu and Ahmed Halilu (Modi), in the October 2018 governorship primary election of the party regarded the primary as a fraud and are yet to truly accept his victory and candidacy of the party.

The governor's image makers are, however, optimistic that all opposition voices would mellow down and support Bindow when it will matter most.

2019 Elections: What Obasanjo, Saraki, Atiku, others discussed at secret meeting in Lagos

Posted: 07 Jan 2019 04:09 PM PST

Chief Olusegun Obasanjo
Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, Nigeria's former President, his erstwhile vice, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, held a closed-door meeting in Lagos during the weekend.

ThisDay quoted a source at the meeting as saying: "It was a strategy meeting towards 2019 and how to give the country a fresh direction.

"The discussion was not about South-west alone; it was a broad-based political arrangement that covers every part of Nigeria. It was a national thing. The basic concern is about how to give Nigeria a new lease of life by enthroning a leadership that will give the citizenry better lives."

Obasanjo has been the arrowhead among those opposed to the second term ambition of Buhari and has maintained a cordial relationship with some leaders across the country to actualise his determination.

Apart from Obasanjo and Atiku, others present at the meeting were: Chief Adebanjo, Saraki, Chief Olabode George, former Governor of Cross River State, Senator Liyel Imoke; National Publicity Secretary, Afenifere, Mr. Yinka Odumakin; and former university teacher and Yoruba leader, Prof. Banji Akintoye.

The only person in Obasanjo's entourage was former Governor of Osun State, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola.

After similar meeting in Lagos on July 3, 2018, Akintoye had said Obasanjo's visit was to look for ways to stop Buhari, insisting that if he does not go now on his own, the electorate would stop him through their PVCs.

OSUN Election: Witnesses Spoil Ademola Adeleke’s Case At Tribunal In Osun

Posted: 07 Jan 2019 03:44 PM PST

Senator Ademola Adeleke and Mr. Adegboyega Oyetola.
Proceedings resumed on Monday before the Osun State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal in Abuja with the petitioners, Senator Ademola Adeleke and the PDP  calling 10 more witnesses.

However,  most of the witnesses proved useless to the petitioner  as they could not substantiate their claims.

The petitioners – the PDP and its candidate Senator Ademola Adeleke – are contesting the outcome of the election won by the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adegboyega Oyetola.

The 10 witnesses called on Monday by the petitioners brought to 34 the number of witnesses so far called by the petitioners, who planned to call over 100.

All the witnesses called on Monday, most of whom were barely literate artisans, alleged that there was over-voting at the polling units where they served as agents of the PDP.

Some of the witnesses could not read the statements they claimed to have signed and adopted before the tribunal on Monday as their evidence in chief in the case.

The witnesses, most of whom could also not express themselves fluently in English language, were however unable to substantiate their allegations of over-voting.

When asked, under cross-examination, to provide proof of their claimed over-voting, the witnesses would point to some alterations in the result sheets tendered before the court.

When reminded, by respondents' lawyers, that they signed the said result sheets on their own volition, the witnesses  claimed to have signed after protesting.

At a point, some of the witnesses became unruly as they refused to answer questions under cross-examination, thereby necessitating occasional intervention by tribunal's Chairman, Justice Ibrahim Sirajo.

Some of the witnesses, also confessed, under cross-examination, that they were not the actual PDP's agents, whose names were submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) before the election.

One of the witnesses, Mrs. Victoria Fadeke Alo admitted that it was actually another agent – Ilesanmi Samson Taiwo – who signed the result sheet as agent of the PDP in the polling unit she claimed to have represented the party.

Under cross-examination by Wole Olanipekun (SAN) who appeared for Oyetola, Mrs Alo admitted that she was not the Ilesanmi Samson Taiwo, whose name appeared on the result sheet as the PDP agent.

Another witness, Oyedokun Wasiu Soyode, who said he acted as PDP agent at Polling Unit 9, Ward 5 in Ejigbo Local Government also admitted not being the actual agent whose name was sent to INEC.

Soyode, who was cross-examined by John Baiyeshea (SAN), who took over from Olanipekun, said his name was not on the list of party agents sent to INEC.

He said it was his brother, Lateef Taiwo, who was the original agent whose name was sent to INEC, but took ill on the election day and was later admitted in the hospital.

He said the development informed why he was asked to take his brother's place.

Also, Shehu Mufutau Alani , who said he acted as PDP agent in Unit 8, Ward 7, Iwo Local Government, also admitted not being the party agent, whose name was submitted to INEC.

He said one Fadirat Isiaka, whose name was submitted fell sick few day before the election, a development that informed his choice as a replacement.

PDP Loses Another Big Figure In Kano To APC

Posted: 07 Jan 2019 03:35 PM PST

Engineer Bello Sani-Gwarzo: dumps PDP for APC
Engr. Bello Sani-Gwarzo, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship aspirants in Kano State, on Monday dumped the party to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

He announcing his decision at a grand reception organised to receive him and his supporters across the 44 Local Government Areas of the state.

Sani-Gwarzo expressed total loyalty and commitment to work for President Muhammadu Buhari's reelection.

He said  he would be working under the 'One 2 Tell 10', a Buhari support group, with a view to ensuring the success of President Buhari in the February election.

Sani-Gwarzo described Buhari as the most suitable candidate for the Presidency.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that no fewer than 250 political groups in the state merged with the 'One 2 Tell 10' as part of efforts to ensure Buhari's victory at the polls.

The Director-General, Sani-Gwarzo Campaign Organisation, Alhaji Mika'ilu Koki, said for three consecutive terms, the aspirant aspired to the Kano Governorship position under the PDP.

According to him, Sani-Gwarzo observed that the platform was not friendly, hence his decision and others to decamp to APC in view of its good policies and developmental programmes.

He lamented that his former party, PDP, was not in any way interested in addressing the plight of the common man.

This he said was evident in what he termed "retrogressive policies, occasioned by poor governance which he noted had retarded the development of the country."

Koki said instead, PDP members were more concerned about self enrichment.

"They are not thinking of Nigeria. and this is evident in their poor governance in the 16 wasteful years in power.

"Barely three years of APC administration under President Buhari, the country had witnessed a steady national growth and economic stability.

"This is an indication of good governance and purposeful leadership that attracted the need for Buhari to have a second term in order for Nigerians to continue consolidating the gains of democracy," Koki said.

While welcoming the defectors, Director-General of the 'One 2 Tell 10', Dr. Abdullahi Baffa-Bichi, commended Sani-Gwarzo and his supporters for taking a wise decision.

"President Buhari is the much awaited messiah that we have been yearning for."

He said those who were opposing and sabotaging Buhari have the agenda to destabilise the country.

Baffa-Bichi said Buhari's greatest concern was how to bailout Nigeria out of the doldrums and make life comfortable for every Nigerian.

The director-general of the support group, who is also the Executive Secretary of Tertiary Education Trust Fund, said Nigeria, at this crucial time, needs President Buhari.

He said that the president would continue to fight corruption and take Nigeria to the next level of advanced economy, if re-elected.

"We are all living witnesses to the improved security in the country, massive improvement in power generation, improved infrastructure development through road construction, rail lines and poverty alleviation scheme.

"We also have improved agricultural activities, sound economic policies and many more," he said.

Just In: FG Orders Nigerian Army To Vacate Daily Trust Premises

Posted: 07 Jan 2019 03:18 PM PST

The Nigerian Army has vacated the premises of the Daily Trust in Abuja, Maiduguri and Lagos, following a Federal Government order.

Garba Shehu, senior special assistant on media to President Buhari announced this on Sunday night.

He tweeted:"The Federal Government has directed the military to vacate the premises of @daily_trust and the order has been complied with, NAN reports.

"Issues between the military and the newspaper as they affect the coverage of the war in the Northeast will be resolved through dialogue", he added.

Media Trust, publishers of the newspaper confirmed that the siege was lifted at 9.30pm.

The Daily Trust had reported that its Maiduguri regional office was shut down by security operatives on Sunday and its editor, Uthman Abubakar and reporter Ibrahim Sawab arrested.

Later, the newspaper also said its head office in Abuja was also invaded and computers carted away.

In what appeared to be a coordinated operation, a little while later, the Lagos Bureau Office was reportedly taken over by a combined team military and police officers.

The Media Trust did not confirm the release of its computers, in the statement by Manir Dan-Ali, the editor-in-chief.

What appeared to have triggered the military wrath was a report in the Sunday edition of the newspaper, revealing military preparations for a massive war against Boko Haram in the North East.

Military sources told NAN that the report revealed too much and endangered the planned operation.

But in his statement, Manir Dan-Ali claimed: "We have not been told of the reason for the military operation against this newspaper but suspect it may have to do with the lead story of the Daily Trust on Sunday that dwelt on the military's effort to retake some towns recently reported to have been lost to insurgents.

"Another clue is that during the invasion of our premises both in Maiduguri and in Abuja, the military men were asking for the reporters who wrote the story.

"Media Trust Limited condemns this unlawful act and calls on the military authorities to release the two reporters arrested in Maiduguri and return the dozens of computers that were taken from our newsroom.

"We also like to thank our colleagues in the media and all others who have been calling and supporting us in our hour of need.

"We also appreciate the efforts of some government officials who insist that there is a better way of handling relations with the media."

Gov. Kashim Shettima and President Muhammadu Buhari
Kashim Shettima, the out going Governor of Borno State, on Monday broke down in tears when a delegation from the state visited President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja. The governor was moved to tears because of what he described as the recent setback in the fight against insurgency. He, however, noted that the leaders had not lost hope in the President's ability to win the war and restore peace in the state.

Amidst the tears, he told the President that the delegation came to present a set of observations and specific requests from a security meeting held a week ago in the state, which will require urgent presidential intervention.

The meeting has now come to an end and the governor declined to give details of the observations and requests made to the president.

Others present included the National Security Adviser, Mohammed Babagana Monguno, the Chief of Staff, Abba Kyari, the DG of DSS and NIA, Chief of Defense Staff, Abayomi Olonisakin and members of the National Assembly.

Borno has been one of the hotspots of insurgency with several attacks, claiming the lives of many including security operatives.

One of the most significant in recent times is the killing of several soldiers after an attack on their military bases in Metele, Gazamalu Local Government Area of the state.

Another equally significant attack is the abduction of over 200 female students from the Government Secondary School in Chibok town in 2014.

After several negotiations between the Federal Government and the insurgents, some girls were released.

While some others managed to escape on their own, some others died while in captivity.

A similar attack occurred in Dapchi, Yobe State (February 2018) where over 100 schoolgirls were abducted. After several negotiations, almost all the girls were released except one (Leah Sharibu).

A few others were said to have died as a result of the trauma while in captivity.

Also in Borno, some aid workers were abducted and killed in 2018 by the insurgents after they claimed that the deadline they gave to the Federal Government to meet their demands had expired.

While the government has expressed sadness over the spate of attacks, it has continued to reassure Nigerians that the war against insurgency is not yet lost.

Severally it has also debunked claims that the insurgents were still in control of some towns, with the President insisting that his administration has recorded significant improvement in fighting Boko Haram.

APC vs PDP: Gov. Ishaku Give Reasons, Fulani Groups Endorsd Atiku

Posted: 07 Jan 2019 02:16 PM PST

Alhaji Atiku Abubakar
Fulani Socio-Cultural groups in Taraba State, on Monday endorsed the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, ahead of the February election.

The groups also endorsed the candidature of Governor Darius Ishaku for a second term, News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, reports.

The North East Zonal Chairman of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association, MACBAN, Alhaji Mafindi Danburam, who led the groups made the declaration in Jalingo, the Taraba State capital.

Danburam explained that their decision was "in the best interest of Fulani speaking people in Nigeria".

He said the decision to endorse the governor and Atiku was taken after wide consultations with critical stakeholders.

Danburam said his initial stance against the Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law was a product of misinformation.

"We were misinformed about government's good intentions.

"We never knew the governor's good intention and we seriously opposed him over the anti-open grazing law.

"You are aware that we even went to court, but the governor remained calm and even suspended further action on the law.

"Today, we have come to compensate him for his patience and to give him and Atiku our support in next year's election for the good of Taraba and Nigeria.

"As a people, we have lost a lot in our fight with the government and we think this is not necessary.

"The governor has promised to amend some aspects of the open grazing prohibition law; we will wait to see it," he said.

Recall that the state chapter of MACBAN led by Alhaji Sahabi Mahmud, had earlier addressed a press conference where it endorsed President Muhammadu Buhari and Alhaji Sani Danladi, both of the All Progressives Congress, APC, as their Presidential and Governorship candidates.

INEC Raises Fears Over 2019 Election, Reveals New Method Of Vote Buying

Posted: 07 Jan 2019 02:08 PM PST

Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Monday raised the alarm over new a new method of vote buying being devised to undermine the voting process ahead of the 2019 general elections.

INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu, disclosed this in Abuja at the presentation of the Voter Register for the 2019 general election to political parties, NAN reports.

Yakubu said that the commission had received credible information that some partisan actors were going round buying up Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) from voters or financially inducing them to collect the Voter Identification Numbers (VIN) on their PVCs.

He said: "In some instances, telephone numbers and details of bank accounts of voters have been collected. By collecting the PVCs, their intention may be to deprive the voters of voting since no one can vote without the PVC.

"By collecting their phone numbers and bank details, the intention is to induce voters by electronic transfer of funds to their accounts since it will be difficult to buy votes at polling units.

"By collecting the VINs, they may be acting on the mistaken notion that our system can be hacked into and the Card Readers somehow preloaded ahead of election and compromised.

"We want to reassure Nigerians that we are aware of the new tricks. It is a futile effort.

"We will work with the security agencies to deal with the violators of our electoral laws, including those who may be trying to compromise our staff responsible for making the PVCs available for collection by legitimate voters.''

Yakubu said that the commission had responded to the vote buying menace in three ways, including the alteration of the configuration of polling units by moving the ballot boxes closer to the voting cubicles, making it difficult for voters to expose their marked ballot papers.

"Secondly, we have introduced a partial ban on the use of mobile phone and other photographic devices by voters while in the voting cubicles.

"Thirdly, we are introducing the rolling and flattening of ballot papers by voters before casting them into the ballot boxes.''

Dr Peter Ozo-Eson, NLC General Secretary, stated this in a statement made available to NAN in Abuja in Monday.

Ozo-Eson, "it should be recalled that the National Executive Council of NLC met on Dec. 17 and directed that we hold nationwide mobilisation of workers and allies protest.

"That is, if by Dec. 31, 2018, the bill on the National Minimum Wage has yet to be sent to the National Assembly to be passed as an act of parliament.

"We immediately announced then that on Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2019, there will be a nationwide mass mobilisation and protests simultaneously across all states in Nigeria. This does not translate to a strike.

"It is on record that each time we had cause to embark on a national strike; we say so publicly without any equivocation.

''We still don't understand where the story about a strike commencing tomorrow came from," he said.

He noted that all state councils, affiliate unions and the civil society organisations have been fully informed and mobilised to ensure the success of Tuesday's mass protests in all the states and the Federal Capital Territory.

He added that when a date was decided for the commencement of a strike subsequently, we would inform the public appropriately. NAN

2019: APC Senatorial Candidate Speaks Out On Selling Her Mandate To Ekweremadu For N500m

Posted: 07 Jan 2019 01:21 PM PST

Senator Ike Ekweremadu
The Enugu West senatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mrs. Juliet Ibekaku-Nwagwu, has described as `false' the reports that Sen. Ike Ekweremadu gave her N500 million to step down her senatorial ambition.

According to her, the purported deal and advance payment was a case of desperation by her political detractors, who were already frustrated after all efforts to sabotage her ambition failed, NAN reports.

"I did not broker or establish any accord at Nwanjoku's wedding, which led to N500 million deal or purported N300 million advance payment to me.

"The concoction is hollow, cheap and laughable. Team Ibekaku is on a divine Mission," she said in a statement in Enugu on Monday.

The people of Enugu West have expressed their desire and no detractor can stand against that.

"The sum of N500 million is not worth the determination of my ambition to salvage the 16 years of wasteful and visionless leadership in Enugu West.

"I will work with all Enugu West people to secure the future of our people that have been under bondage for 16 years," she said.

Ibekaku-Nwagwu said that she was on a mission to bring back the dividends of democracy for the senatorial district, adding that her vision for a better Enugu West had been articulated in her four-point agenda.

The female candidate said that through her four-point agenda, she would influence industrialization, job creation, improved health care services and improved education sector.

Ibekaku-Nwagwu further said her campaign team had remained calm in the face of attempts to blackmail and undermine her person, including the destruction of her bill boards in Awgu and Aninri council areas.

"We urge those masquerades perpetrating these acts of violence to desist from it.

"They should not take our efforts to allow peace to reign for granted.

"I and my team will remain focused and will dwell on issues rather than on trivialities and cheap blackmail," she said.

"At this juncture I will like to express profound gratitude to His Excellency, Alhaji Yahaya Bello for changing my story. I am not who I was in January 2016. I take with me invaluable experience money can never buy. Thank you sir.

"Edward Onoja was the one who recommended me for appointment even before we ever met. I will never forget the impact he has had in my life.

"And to the New Direction family, especially the Media Office of the Governor headed by Kingsley Fanwo, I remain grateful for the wonderful memories which will remain indelible in my heart forever.

"My boss is one of the hardest core Buharists I know. I am no longer part of his government but I belong to the larger Buhari family of which he is one and together we shall all do our bit to make the Next Level a reality by February. The insinuation that I resigned to join any other campaign is wishful thinking taken to another level.

"And to all my friends on this platform, thank you for having my back always and for all the support. Thank you".
