Ambode: Lagos deserves continuity

Posted: 09 Jan 2019 12:40 AM PST

APC Lagos Rally
Before a huge crowd, Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode yesterday urged residents to embrace a "government of continuity".

Presenting All Progressives Congress (APC) flag to its governorship candidate, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the governor said: "By this handing over, we believe we will all join hands to make him the next governor of Lagos State."

The governor and other speakers at the rally, including party Chairman Tunde Balogun, Asiwaju Olorunfunmi Basorun, Senator Tony Adefuye and Chief Lanre Rasak, urged party members and supporters to prepare for the poll.

But the well-attended rally was disrupted as party chieftains were concluding their remarks. Some hoodlums invaded the Skypower Grounds, venue of the campaign kick-off at the Government Reservation Area (GRA), Ikeja. They were said to belong to rival drivers' unions. They shot guns and wielded other dangerous weapons.

Two people, whose identities were not disclosed as at the time of filing this report, were feared killed. Three reporters were injured.

Balogun condemned the disruption of the rally, which he described as "very successful". He wondered why some groups who had scores to settle would use the occasion as their battlefield.

"We had a very successful outing but some people decided to use the venue of our rally to settle scores. We know nothing about the disruption," the party chair said in a chat with this newspaper last night.

He apologised to the media organisations whose reporters were injured.

Party spokesman Joe Igbokwe, described the gathering as "unprecedented" in the history of Lagos politics.

"We only have our teeming supporters and the leadership of the party in the state to thank for displaying absolute trust, loyalty, commitment and affection for the party they have cherished for years and still continue to cherish till date.

"His Excellency and our own Governor Akinwunmi Ambode were on the ground to boost the morale of the party and its candidates. We all witnessed an electrifying moment as the governor and the candidates drove in together to the venue.

"Some 63 chairmen of other political parties in the state added beauty and glamour to the great event by coming out en masse to endorse the candidates of APC, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Obafemi Hamzat.

"However, we regret that towards the end of the rally two factions of National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) engaged themselves in a brawl that led to some people sustaining various injuries. We deeply regret this ugly and unacceptable rude behaviour with a firm promise that such an incident will not repeat itself again in the cause of the campaigns."

The party leaders took turns to address the crowd of supporters at the venue where no fewer than 63 political parties under the aegis of the Coalition of Progressive Parties in Lagos endorsed the Sanwo-Olu/Hamzat ticket.

The crowd was massive. Brooms filled the air. On the bandstand was ace musician Wasiu Ayinde, who thrilled the crowd with partisan songs. The party's candidates were accompanied by their supporters.

Conspicuous in their banners were the photographs of the various parliamentary flag bearers, including Senator Oluremi Tibubu, Senator Olamilekan Adeola, Alhaji Bayo Osinnowo (Lagos East), Yemi Alli (Mushin), Fatai Oluwa (Ajeromi Ifelodun), Abiodun Ganiyu (Osodi Isolo), Mosunmola Sangodare (Surulere), Sola Giwa (Island), Jide Jimoh (Mainland), Bisi Yusuf (Alimoso), Lukman Oluwa (Ajeromi Ifelodun II) and Lanre Okunlola (Surulere II).

There were excited party elders and leaders, including Deputy Governor Mrs. Oluranti Adebule, members of the Governorship Advisory Council (GAC) – Third Republic House of Representatives member Prince Tajudeen Olusi, Chief M.A Taiwo, and Cardinal James Odunmbaku –  party Secretary Dr. Wale Ahmed,  Woman leader Jumoke Okoya-Thomas and Ekiti Central Senator Mrs. Raji Rasaki.

Also, there were:  Chief Michael Olawale-Cole, former Deputy Governor Sarah Susan, Ambode's wife, Bolanke, Mrs. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, Oyinlomo Danmole, Wahab Alawiye-King, Mrs. Fausat Gbadebo, Mrs. Kemi otitolaye, Bayo Osiyemi, Publicity Secretary Joe Igbokwe and his deputy, Abiodun Salami, who was the master of ceremony.

The highlights of the rally, which started with an opening prayer by Mrs. Kafilat Ogbara, included the presentation of party flags by Balogun to Senator Tinubu (Lagos Central), Senator Adeola (Lagos West), James Faleke, House of Representatives candidate for Ikeja Constituency and the two House of Assembly candidates, Folajimi Mohammed (Ikeja I) and Adedamola Kasumu (Ikeja II).

The leader of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Col. Folorunso Ibrahim (retd) and former Lagos State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) deputy chairman, Ola Apena defected to the APC.

Receiving the party flag from Balogun, Apena, who described himself as a foundation member of the PDP and deputy chairman for six years, lamented that he was in a wrong party. He said he defected to the ruling party to contribute his quota to the APC's victory at the polls.

The Accord leader, Otunba Fatukasi, who led the 63 opposition parties to the rally, said the opposition leaders resolved to work for Sanwo-Olu in the interest of Lagos.

He said: "We members of the opposition are behind Sanwo-Olu. We will support him. We will use the powers given to us by God to work for Sanwo-Olu across the 57 councils. On November 8, last year, 45 political parties endorsed Sanwo-Olu. But, today, from 45, we have risen to 63."

Hailing the defectors for taking the right decision, Balogun said it was unprecedented.

Ambode, who wished the party supporters a happy New Year, acknowledged the endorsement as a sign of good things to come during the election.

Reflecting on the challenges ahead, the governor said: "The APC campaign is a united campaign in this state and we are going to do it together."

In his view, Lagos deserves a government of continuity that will build on the achievements of former Governors Bola Tinubu, Babatunde Fashola and the current administration.

Ambode stressed: "Lagos State has witnessed progressive growth in the last 20 years, since 1999. Why have we been experiencing progressive growth? The answer is very simple: I have had predecessors who have actually delivered on their promises.

"I have followed in the footsteps of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and Babatunde Fashola under one party. We need a government of continuity. APC is a party to trust and rely on. The next government will be a government of continuity."

Adefuye urged party members, particularly from Lagos West, to learn from the 2015 experience when the opposition defeated the APC during the parliamentary polls.

He said: "In the last elections, we lost in the House of Representatives. That should not happen again. By this time in March, we will gather to rejoice over our victory."

Basorun called for unity and cohesion, urging aggrieved members to bury their grievances and differences. He enjoined them to return home and work for the success of the candidates at the polls.

Rasak, Balogun of Epe, advised Lagosians to vote wisely, stressing that the return of the PDP to power will be a disaster.

He said: "For 16 years, Atiku's party, the PDP did nothing for Nigerians. Don't vote for thieves."

Balogun added: "The progressives have turned Lagos around. Through solid financial engineering initiated by Asiwaju Tinubu, Lagos from a partly N600 million has moved to N36 billion monthly. Lagos has become a mega city. Asiwaju Tinubu and Babatunde Fashola have done well to Lagos.

"On May 29, Sanwo-Olu will continue to deliver dividends of democracy. Sanwo-Olu is qualified. He has experience. There are many parties. Vote for APC after sighting the broom on the ballot paper, using the index finger. Vote for Osinnowo in the West, Oluremi Tinubu in the Central and Olamilekan Adeola in the West."

I revisited Show Dem Camp's ''Clone Wars IV'' and here is what I found

Posted: 09 Jan 2019 12:30 AM PST

Ghost and Tec of Show Dem Camp

With ''Clone Wars IV: These Buhari Times'', Show Dem Camp are not just at their most conscious state but also their most reflective and unguarded.

In this role of mine, listening to new singles and albums almost upon immediate release is not something done just out of love for the music, but out of obligation.

If not for the sake of reviewing them, then to at least be knowledgeable with every conversation surrounding what you do. What is however not a given is one finding time to re-listen, except for a rare few that truly commands you going back to them and that is the case here with Show Dem Camp's New year gift, ''Clone Wars IV.''

Show Dem Camp

The album was released on January 1, 2019, so luckily for me, I was at home instead of my regular office seat, making it possible for me to easily put it on repeat without something urgent or breaking calling for my attention.

Of course, I have done my expected review and have been caught in other things, but the consciousness of the tape has stayed with me, with some lines re-echoing itself in my subconscious state and that is how I found myself going back to listen yet again and this time, outside [not] adding the word, ''Blamming'' to my 2019 dictionary, I found some more clues to why this album is both a graceful social commentary and an introspective journey executed in many ways others cannot.

The more times I listened, the more I enjoyed it and the more I appreciated the growth and consistency of Ghost and Tec, particularly the latter, who arguably was at his hungriest in a long while on this album.

SDC have always made conscious music, right from their debut effort, ''Dreamer's Project'' with songs like 'Talk About It', the ''Clone Wars'' series and even with the 'distractions' of the ''Palmwine'' tapes, they consistently packed a message but on ''These Buhari Times'', they weren't just conscious, they let the audience more into their lives with Ghost's several reverential references to his daughter and Tec, who more than once shared personal conversations.

But the most significant achievement of this project is that screenwriter's eye that Show Dem Camp brings to the listeners giving form and life to their words.

The lyrics are detailed in a way that they convey some of the most narrative descriptions with a controlled complexity of emotions that while on one hand you are wowed by their lyricism, on the other hand, they form an image in your head that takes you right into the studio and you find yourself standing outside the booth as they voice their verses, peeping through their notepads and connecting with where all the sharp rhymes and references are coming from.

Take, for instance, the intro when Tec said ''Since clone wars three I've been impatient, too much palm wine will cause intoxication, I just tried to give my guys some motivation, but they say they wanted balance.''

These are internal debates that can be applied across every field of life. As a writer at times, I ask, more telling long pieces that very few will read and your tiny Twitter community will hype you about or the quick, juicy trending contents that will translate to major traffic which is the drug of every online media house?

On 'Duade', which is one of my favourite songs on the album, a song that talks about vulnerability and conditioning, Tec breaks down the weight that the average male carries, that expectation that has led to the misrepresentation of the word, 'Stoic' as being 'Strong.'

''I put my feelings in the chamber then I load it up, but I never shoot, it's like we fear the truth''

And then Ghost totally sent my head going wild and me asking myself a thousand questions when he said,

''Swear that whole Tbills episode, struck a chord in my chest, If you're living here in Naija, Ya some form of depressed, yes you heard correct, It's a wonder how we manage, to be more concerned with if Wiz is dating Tiwa Savage, than the interior decorations of our mental palace.''

How many times have we as humans focused on the failings of others while neglecting our long list of shortcomings? How many times have the internet provided distractions to boiling issues and we laugh and make jokes at the expense of someone's situation? This is everything that the social media age has become.

The type of lines is strongly enforced across the entire project. On 'Epigenetics', a scientific field of study that observes changes in organisms, Ghost points that ''There is generational trauma going on here'' before going ahead to bare a number of topics on his verse including a sub at music critics.

Tec then paints the picture of 'normalcy' in seeing jungle justice play out at age five and then Ozone deftly caps it off with ''The man with the money wins, manacles on my mental, they don't wan't you to think, if you don't move an inch, your praying won't do a thing''. Damn.

'Packaging' is life as it happens on a daily in Lagos and Tec's ''I know a guy ask for one red-bull, every time we see him inside the club, Ha, in his pockets not a thousand bucks, but his fresh kaftan, omo live as fuck, men I stopped going out for two years, came back and the guy was still inside the club'', does this sound anything like that guy in your University whom you swear should have graduated at least five years ago? Yeah, right.

Then there is pure witty dexterity on songs like '4th Republic' where Tec rhymed, ''The other day, men I swear I saw a Lambo, at the toll gate getting scratched by a danfo, I thought of life, stay humble as you plan bro, one day you're in the clouds, the next day you're Ambo.''

Just as Boogey while taking shots at the arms of Government closed the tape with a stark image of life as it happens around Aso Rock;

''Men of the senate are video vixens and artistes, if this is the bigger pic, every pixel is garbage, the future of my kids looking dark as mine, but we only care about which party shines, these Buhari times''

Show Dem Camp have not gotten to this revered heights in a vacuum, it's projects like this where they are able to weave interesting stories around systematic government failings without making you feel like 'We've heard it all before' that makes them special.

''These Buhari Times'' is a reflection of not just the polity from a Governance point of view, but covering the increased awareness in terms of rising issues like self-worth, depression and the importance of producing art that is pensive of mood and conversations in a way that hits so close to home.

It is a therapy session without the need for the blandly coloured rooms of a paid therapist. It is one held in the open court, under the rush of fresh air, where there is no one judging or claiming perfection, a project built on a familiar warmth and timely delivered not as a panacea to the madness of the last three and a half years but a shared expression of its telling impact on our lives as a collective society.

Actress Ini Edo: Why I’ve been lying low

Posted: 08 Jan 2019 10:00 PM PST

Actress Ini Edo

Beautiful  actress Ini Edo is one of Nollywood's most sought-after actresses today. With over a hundred movies in the kitty, the screen goddess, who's currently the Special Assistant on Culture & Tourism to Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom State, speaks on her latest movie production, Heaven on My Mind, in partnership with fellow actress, Uche Jombo.

She also talks about giving back to Nollywood and her plans for the New Year.
How was 2018 for you, any regrets?

I don't have any regrets whatsoever. As a matter of fact, 2018 was a great year for me. I'm thankful and hopeful for a better 2019.

Talking about 2019, what should fans expect from you and what are you looking forward to?
My fans should expect nothing short of the best. 2019 is going to be another great year. Like I said earlier, I'm looking forward to a better 2019, not just for me as a person or an actress but also for my fans, friends and well wishes, and, of course, our nation, Nigeria.

As the 2019 general elections draw closer, what do you have to say to your fans and Nigerians at large?

Stay safe and if you must go out to vote, vote right and vote wise. Stay out of trouble. Don't allow yourself to be used by any politician and avoid anything that can bring you pain and discomfort.

You feature more in movies produced by your friends and this has given rise to speculation that producers can't afford you…

Well, I wouldn't say that. I've just been featured in a movie I did not produce. It's a film produced by Mo' Abudu. So, I won't say it's because they can't afford me. I decided to slow it down a little and just be selective of what I am part of, for obvious reasons. Most times the worst script comes with lots of money. If a story is not so great, a producer would want to use you because he feels he needs somebody like you to bring it to life and they'd want to pay anything just to have you in it, but at the end of the day, when the film comes out, you feel bad you did it. So for me, it's not just about the money. If I'm passionate about the story, it really doesn't matter how much I'm being paid. I don't use money as a yardstick before going into a project. There've been some projects where the money wasn't that great but because I really loved the script, I did it. So in all, I'm just taking my time and being selective.

Why did you choose to go into production?
I think I'm one of the first actors who started movie production. I also think I'm one of the first actors who took their films to cinema. I don't know if you remember when I did I Will Take My Chances with Emem Isong. And that's also what gave birth to a new actor, Bryan Okwara. That's the way I give back to the industry. When you've been in an industry for a long time and all you did were things that were handed over to you by others, and you think things should be done in a certain way, you would want to be part of that change you want to see. Now, there's a journey that's already on and that's the cinema culture.

When I did I Will Take My Chances, we did not have a lot of cinematographers in Nigeria, so we brought in cinematographers from Hollywood and that was because we wanted to do something different and meet up with international standards. But today, we have so many cinematographers in Nigeria. It cost us so much but it was the beginning of something and now everybody is on it. You just don't sit down and expect things to be done magically; be part of the change you want to see and you'll get there somehow. See what's going on today in the industry. I am proud and grateful to God that I was able to play a role. When we did Knocking On Heaven's Door, what a lot of people don't know was that the story just fell on my laps. The owners of that project wanted me to produce it and I brought Emem Isong in and they wanted me to play the lead character and we were going to do the entire song miming thing.

For sure I can't sing so I insisted on using a new actor; they actually wanted me and another guy with a known face but I insisted on bringing in a totally new person on board and that's what gave rise to Adesua Etomi and Blossom Chukwujekwu. That was their first jobs but today see who they are. I just feel very privileged to make such impact even though it may not be so celebrated but it just feels good to know that I've been able to do this. The latest one with Uche Jombo, Heaven On My Mindis mind-blowing.

Why production? Isn't it possible for one to stick to acting alone?
Why not? It's very possible. There's no law that says an actor must produce; it's a choice. Like I said, if you want change and you want to be part of the bigger picture, you just have to grow and explore. There are some of my colleagues who've been there longer than I am but have never produced a film; there's no law that says you must produce.

Looking at where Nollywood is now, is there something that's not been done that you'd like to do?
What I'm looking forward to is that day when we'll get to a point we'll be making so much income that we could actually live the big names we are known for. In Hollywood for instance, you don't need to do 20 movies in a year to make it. If you do two films, you're good to go; that is good compared to us. I'm hoping to see Nollywood get to a point where you do one job in a year and it takes care of the rest. Right now, our films are acceptable everywhere. Our industry has grown, I just want our pockets to grow to that level as well.

And for your pocket to grow to that level, what are the things you think should be done better?

I think distribution should be done better because the more people see the film, the more money you make. Hollywood films are watched all over the world. We haven't gotten there yet, we are still around Africa and some parts of America I think. But by the time we get to a place where countries that don't understand Nigerian languages subtitle our films to watch, then, I think we'd be better-off and every other thing will follow.

Tunde Kelani "It’s unwise to release a movie to be pirated in 24 hours"

Posted: 08 Jan 2019 09:30 PM PST

Tunde Kelani

Veteran filmmaker, Tunde Kelani said in a recent interview that it is not wise to release a movie which will be pirated 24 hours after release.

Kelani further said he has works that can be released but he has deliberately decided not to release any of such movies in the last four years.

"As a matter of fact, there was no time I left my job as a filmmaker. But for the last four years, I have not released any new production. I have movies I can release but it wouldn't be wise to do that because it will be pirated within 24 hours. It is not sustainable to keep working for pirates because we invest a lot in our movies."

Kelani, whose last released movie was 'Dazzling Mirage,' however said he's hopeful things will change this new year.

"Piracy has affected the traditional DVD distribution network; so, we have to look towards technology and other platforms. This year, I think we will have solutions", he said.

Kelani, who resigned as the Chairman of the board of the National Film and Video Censors Board, has focused more on his film academy, Mainframe Film and Media institute.

5 new slangs we learnt from the Nigerian music industry in 2018

Posted: 08 Jan 2019 09:00 PM PST

Nigerian Music Industry Slangs 2018

We are eight days into the new year, but the memories of a fun-filled and exciting 2018 witnessed in the Nigerian Music industry continues to ring in our minds.

Outside brilliant records, unforgettable moments and major talking points that the past year offered to us, one area that also enjoyed a major boost was our street dictionary as it was constantly updated with the introduction of new slangs or buzz words from some of our favorite acts.

While we await the new ones that will definitely emerge in 2019, here is a round-up of some of the exciting ones that stuck in the past year.

Here are the 5 new music slangs we learnt in 2018

'Stew'

At the close of 2018, the word 'stew' held a different meaning from its original definition, no thanks to Wizkid and Tiwa Savage.

In the build-up to the release of some of his singles, Wizkid had first substituted the word, 'Song/music' for 'Stew', so instead of saying 'New music coming out', he used 'New stew coming out' and this was further heightened with the release of the visuals to his hit song, 'Fever' which starred Tiwa Savage.

'Stew' became the new viral word deployed by his fans to describe anything from the stables of the Starboy that was considered good or beautiful.

'Ji Masun'

Translated to 'Wake Up', 'Ji Masun' is a charge commonly used on the streets to incite one to be alert or awake at all times.

This was later adopted by DMW singer Idowest as the title of his hit single featuring label boss, Davido, where he cast more light on what it meant in the opening line of his verse, ''Oya stand well well, ko ya duro dada.''

'Aza'

If there is one word that has birthed several new ones over the years, it is money and in 2018, we discovered yet another one, this time from the DMW stables.

Frequently used by Davido during his many online giveaways, the slang was later developed into an anthem with the release of the titled song featuring DMW's pair of Davido and Peruzzi alongside Duncan Mighty with the much hyped video shot on the streets of Port-Harcourt.

'Gbe Body E'

With the wave of the new pop culture headlining dance move, 'Zanku', came a command that goes ahead of the song. 'Gbe Body E' which literally translates to 'lift/move your body.'

This was created by indigenous rapper Zlatan as a call for everyone to get off their feet and hit the dancefloor.

'Saint Sami - Ganja'

According to Urbandictionary.com, this slang made famous by the Otunba Lamba, Slimcase, ''refers to a boss (patron/matron), a person that is honored with all the glory in a successful act/gathering.''

Even though we cannot authoritatively tell you the origin behind this slang, we can, however, confirm that for anyone to be addressed under this name, he/she is the leader of an Oshozondi movement.

The young lady who hails from Delta State, was specially recognized by President Muhammadu Buhari and the Inspector general of police, Ibrahim Idris, who were present at Passing Out Parade Ceremony which took place on 20th of December 2018.

At the ceremony, president Buhari presented the Sword of Honor to the overall best graduating cadet Shuaibu Aminu who hails from Kano state.

Trouble As Kogi Govt, NULGE Disagree Over Percentage Payment of LG Workers

Posted: 08 Jan 2019 05:30 PM PST

There was confusion at the Kogi State Government House on Tuesday as the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) outrightly rejected the statement of the government that they had paid Local Government workers in Kogi State over 50% per cent salaries.

The Chief of Staff to Kogi State Governor, Chief Edward Onoja while addressing Labour Leaders comprising of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), Medical and Health Workers Union (MHWUN), National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) in Lokoja after they embark on a peaceful protest over the N30, 000 new minimum wage told workers that at Local government level, in the last six months, payments have not gone below 50% per cent.

The statement did not go down well with the workers as they began to chant "No No, is not true.

Onoja while explaining further to buttress his claim said, "Is there a NULGE representative here? Please, we are before the world so we are not here to joke, Daily Post reports.

"We must read out some information so that when they say what the money is used for, you will compare today and yesterday. NULGE chairman, there is a directive that no Local Government should pay below 50% no matter what. NULGE chairman confirm".

When the President, National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) Kogi State Chapter, Comrade Tade Adeyemi stepped forward to ascertain the position of the government on the percentage payment of Local Government workers salaries, he rebutted the claims saying workers have been receiving 25- 30% salaries in the last six months.

"I want to on behalf of the entire Local Government workers, register our displeasure that despite our agreement, that no LGA should receive less than 54%, I want to point it to you that, majority of LGA workers are receiving 25-30% salaries".

But the Chief of staff responded that the Director of LGA's and Treasurers confirmed to the government with relevant records that they have been paying 50% and above.

Meanwhile, workers in the Local Government have called for the immediate sack of various DLG's and Treasurers for allegedly hoarding their salaries.

Some workers who spoke under the condition of anonymity described the development as an embarrassment to the Kogi State Government.

Earlier, the Kogi State Chairman Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Onuh Edoka while presenting the demands of workers in the State reminded the government that workers are being owned five months, 10 months, 15-24 months respectively.

Edoka also called on President Muhammadu Buhari to quickly implement the N30,000 new minimum wage adding that, he should not be distracted by some governors hiding under the guise of, "Nigeria Governors Forum" who are not willing to support the labour movement.

"We hereby reiterate our directive to Nigerian workers to vote out any politician or political party that refuse to pay the new national minimum wage of N30,000. We shall continue to consolidate our efforts to strengthen already existing platforms and structures to give teeth to our firm resolve to remove from power anti-labour governors and political leaders in the forthcoming 2019 general election.

"We urge the government to desist from using the threat of mass sack or the barbaric policy of "no work… no pay" to break our resolve as this would only calcify our position. And for any government contemplating mass sack as a response to our demands for the implementation of the new minimum wage of N30,000, we wish to offer you this advice. The consequence of workers retrenchment would be too grievous for any political office holder truly elected by the people to contemplate," he said.

2019 Election: A Politician Like Me Is What Oyo Needs – Alao-Akala

Posted: 08 Jan 2019 05:15 PM PST

Chief Christopher Adebayo Alao-Akala
A former Governor of Oyo State and Action Democratic Party (ADP) gubernatorial candidate in the 2019 general elections, Chief Christopher Adebayo Alao-Akala, on Tuesday said only experienced hand like him should be elected in the forthcoming March 2nd gubernatorial election.

Alao-Akala said that this was necessary to ensure that the people of the state "reap real dividends of democracy".

He made these declarations while speaking at a meeting of ADP candidates for this year's general elections, chaired by the State Chairman of the party, Mr Folaranmi Owolabi, in Ibadan, the state capital.

He said his experience as a former governor of the state qualified him as the best for the job come May 29, this year.

He pointed out that experience counts a lot when it comes to administering a state like Oyo.

Alao-Akala said, "Let me tell you that in Oyo state, we don't need inexperienced person as a governor come May 29. Inexperienced person can't be a good governor for the state.

"So, don't vote in an inexperienced politician as the next governor of Oyo state. We must not give Oyo state to an inexperienced hand".

He added that, "ADP will form masses oriented government, in which the people of the state will be made to benefit positively from the state government policy and programmes unlike the present hardship imposed on the state by the All Progressives Congress (APC) led administration in the state."

He alleged that the administration of Governor Abiola Ajimobi had no plan for the state and had been experimenting with series of unfriendly and anti-people policies and programmes, thereby creating untold hardships across the state.

Owolabi, while speaking, said the party remained the only party to beat in the coming general elections in Oyo state.

He then charged members of the party to join hands with the candidates and the party leaders in ensuring the victory of ADP in the elections.

Senate President, Dr. Saraki Speaks Ahead of 2019 Election

Posted: 08 Jan 2019 05:08 PM PST

Senate President, Bukola Saraki has said the people of Kwara will resist plans to "annex'' the state to the South West Zone using the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its candidates in the forthcoming general elections.
NAN reports that Saraki spoke on Tuesday at Bode Saadu, headquarters of Moro Local Government Area, at the official flag-off of the campaign of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

"This election is not about me or our governorship candidate, Razak Atunwa. It's about this state, our tradition. Time will tell about whatever we do today.

"We go back to PDP because we need a government that will care for our people, give jobs to our people,'' he said.

He appealed to the people of the state, particularly the electorate, to ignore any differences they may have with all the candidates of the party and vote massively for PDP during the general elections.

Speaking in the same vein, the Director-General of the PDP Campaign Council in Kwara, Prof. Abubakar Suleiman, urged the party faithful to vote for PDP.

According to him, the coming general elections would be between the indigenes of Kwara and non-indigenes.

"Kwara belongs to the North, we will not allow Kwara to be taken away from us to the West.

"Our leader is Dr Bukola Saraki, our president is Abubakar Atiku, our incoming governor is Atunwa,'' he said.

Also speaking, Gov. Abdufatah Ahmed of Kwara said the flag-off campaign would usher in another PDP government in the state and Nigeria.

"You can all see hunger, poverty in the last three years of APC government. We want to bring in PDP to change the narrative. We shall usher in PDP government in Nigeria and Kwara," he said.

In his remarks, the PDP governorship candidate, Abdulrazak Atunwa, promised to run "a government that would focus on the welfare of the people.

"Our government shall provide jobs for the people. Women will also be empowered."

Kasuwan Magani Crisis: Adara Community Accuse El-Rufai Of Causing Killings In Kaduna

Posted: 08 Jan 2019 04:46 PM PST

Governor Nasiru El-Rufai
The Adara Development Association, ADA, in Kaduna State has alleged that the subtle and overt acts of favouritism and differential treatments shown to Hausa Fulani against the natives in the area by the state government are contributing in no small measure to the deterioration of ethno-religious harmony.

The association, therefore, made a passionate appeal to the Federal and Kaduna State governments to urgently address the lapses for the interest of all, Daily Post reports.

Addressing newsmen on Tuesday in Kaduna on how injustice and insecurity are being fueled by the Kaduna State government leading to kidnapped and killing of Agom Adara, Dr Maiwada Galadima, the National President of the association, Awemi Duo Maisamari said, "The government despises any engagement with some legitimate socio-cultural groups even on matters of public concern.

"We are, therefore, calling for these external interventions to ensure long lasting peace for all. Our fear is that the self-destruction of the legitimacy of government by a continuation of these lapses will ultimately fuel even greater insecurity.

"We are also calling on all lovers of genuine peace to engage the authorities concerned and make them see reason."

The National President lamented, "Another fundamental source of long term bitterness threatening security is the abrogation of Adara Chiefdom and the subordination of its people to the traditional rulership of much smaller Chiefdoms.

"It beats our imagination why Adara as the second largest tribe in the State do not deserve a Chiefdom. But ironically, mini Hausa/Fulani communities are given Chiefdoms with names and nomenclatures of their choice. This is a major, unnecessary and unparalleled affront to the soul of the Adara nation."

He explained that in 2016 and 2017, armed robbery, cattle rustling and kidnapping were at their peak in the area.

"Many of our people were killed, women raped, ransom collected and people displaced in many remote villages. However, security presence was concentrated on highways to ensure free movement for those that matter. But our people in remote communities were left at the mercy of criminals to resort to self defence. They simply did not matter enough.

"Due to ethno-religious sentiments, there were only occasional arrests and most cases were not properly investigated. This is because the likely suspects, clues and leads to these criminal acts were almost entirely non-indigenes.

"Consequently, most of the criminals escaped justice and became more daring. Obviously, the criminals were treated lightly because the victims do not matter.

"Up till now, some of the communities displaced during that period are yet to return to their villages. Yet their plight did not attract any serious attention talk less of emergency or humanitarian assistance. The welfare of our innocent citizens simply did not matter enough.

"Due essentially to the mishandling of the socio-economic frictions, the crises has acquired ethno-religious dimensions. Now, government and security officials have taken more aggressive postures. In most incidents, there are now arrests or administrative actions targeted primarily at our people. The coded massage here is that it matters to government only when it is our people that are rightly or wrongly the suspects. But when it is the other way round, it hardly matters.

"In July, 2017 a suspected Fulani criminal was beaten by a mob of farmers and he eventually died. Some persons from our community were accused, one was arrested, detained and eventually tried in court. Some known Fulani people threatened a reprisal attack after the death of the suspected criminal. But when about 8 of our people were killed in the reprisal attack that later happened, no Fulani suspect was arrested and tried. We suspect that this sort of bias has become the standard practice of the Kaduna state government," he lamented.

APC vs PDP: Buhari Govt Discloses Atiku’s ‘Dubai strategy’

Posted: 08 Jan 2019 04:10 PM PST

Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and President Muhammadu Buhari
The Federal Government has declared that the "Dubai strategy" of the presidential candidate of the main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will fail.

Lai Mohammed, Nigeria's Minister of Information, told the media on Tuesday that the growing accusations that 9-Mobile and Keystone Bank were bought by President Muhammadu Buhari's family members were part of the PDP's Dubai agenda.

The Minister said the agenda reached in Dubai by the opposition was to "throw enough mud at the President and hope they can succeed in tainting his integrity''.

"The sooner the PDP realises this and retrace its steps, the better. President Buhari is globally acknowledged for his legendary integrity, and no one can tarnish it.

"When its allegations were proved to be wrong, those behind the shameless allegation did not even have the decency to admit their lies and apologise to the nation.

"This is bad politicking and it will not win more votes for the sinking PDP.

"It is sad that instead of focusing on issues, all they spew are
innuendos, lies and concocted stories,'' he said.

He said that PDP Presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar's campaign has lost steam, and all it is doing is to make wild allegations not backed by facts.

2019 Presidency: President Buhari Give Reasons He Doesn’t Want State Police, Says Lagos Richer Than Federal Government

Posted: 08 Jan 2019 03:40 PM PST

 President Muhammadu Buhari
President Muhammadu Buhari has said Lagos State is richer than the Federal Government.

President Buhari stated this while disclosing why he does not want to be a part of State Police, even though it was a good initiative.

The Commander-In-Chief, spoke in an interview with Arise TV aired on Monday night.

He said, "It may be more efficient, which was why I congratulated the Governor of Lagos State when he started the Lagos State Neighbourhood Corps. It's a good initiative."

Buhari said the initiative could not work because most states could not afford to pay the salaries of their workers.

He said, "Lagos State is richer than the Federal Government. How many states are there that can pay salaries and you now ask them to go and form state Police?

"And, do you know what can happen if you can't feed the Police? Do you just give him uniform and a gun but can't pay him salaries for six months?

"It's going to be a problem and I don't want to be a part of it."

He added, "I have a problem with the Police and I told them that, from my training and experience, the Police are supposed to be in the front line.

"Now, Nigerians are seeing soldiers on the streets. This is not good for the Police and I told them this some months ago."

MC Oluomo: Police Declare Mustapha ‘Seigo’ Adekunle Wanted, Speaks On Violence At APC Rally

Posted: 08 Jan 2019 03:18 PM PST

Violence at Lagos APC rally
Lagos State Police Command has declared Mustapha Adekunle, aka Seigo, wanted for attempting to disrupt the APC rally held at Skypower Ground, Ikeja, on Tuesday.

Seigo, an NURTW chieftain, was said to have attended the rally with his supporters.

However, at the tail end of the event, Seigo and his group, the Police said, violently engaged other supporters of the party.

In the ensuing melee, one MC Oluomo, another NURTW chieftain, was stabbed and was rushed to EKO Hospital where he is currently recuperating, while two other victims of the attack were taken to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital for treatment.

"The crisis was quickly contained by policemen at the venue", CSP Chike Oti, Police Public Relations Officer, said in a statement Monday night.

"It will be recalled that a few hours before the rally started, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, held a meeting with the leaders of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW ), Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) and other affiliate groups where all the parties agreed to eschew violence before, during and after the electioneering.

"It was therefore surprising that a prominent member of NURTW would attempt to violently disrupt a peaceful political rally.

"In view of the development, the Command wishes to encourage members of the public with useful information on the whereabouts of Mustapha Adekunle popularly known as Seigo to report such at a nearest police station.

"Meanwhile, two persons have been arrested in connection with the incident."

New Minimum Wage: Labour Cripple Activities In Lagos

Posted: 08 Jan 2019 03:03 PM PST

NLC
Minimum Wage: The organised Labour protest on Tuesday, caused heavy traffic on Lagos roads, while many commuters were stranded at various bus stops.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the sensitisation protest by the Organised Labour started from Maryland, as early as 7 a.m., to the Lagos State Secretariat, Alausa, Ikeja.

The labour protest also resulted into heavy traffic on Ikorodu road, down to Alausa, Ikeja.

The organised labour is protesting over government's delay in submitting the N30,000 minimum wage report agreed by the tripartite committee.

Mr Solomon Adelegan, Vice President, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) told the workers that the current demand for a new minimum wage had gone beyond negotiation stage.

According to him, labour will not renege until the report of the new minimum wage is passed to the National Assembly for implementation.

Adelegan said that the essence of the protest was not political but to hand over a letter to Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode, to further communicate with the Governors' Forum on the agreed minimum wage.

Mr Abiodun Aremu, General Secretary, Joint Action Front (JAF), said that the N30,000 minimum wage was not negotiable, saying that the Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), would support the organised labour till the new minimum wage is implemented.

However, when Mr Benjamin Adeyinka, a Special Adviser to Gov. Ambode told the protesting workers that the governor was not available, they shouted and insisted that the gate should be opened.

Adeyinka was not allowed to make further speech, as the protesting workers insisted that they did not want to hear from him.

Some of the placards carried by the workers read: "N30,000 minimum wage, not negotiable"; "place politicians and workers on the same living wage salary structure", among others.
