Undergraduate Student Legal Aid Office - Fall 2019 Internship

Posted: 21 Feb 2019 11:57 AM PST

The Undergraduate Legal Aid Office internship program allows students to gain valuable hands-on experience while earning 3 hours of academic credit. The office selects 8 students per semester. Interns work approximately 6 hours per week and attend an academic session once every other week.

During office hours, interns perform in-take interviews with students, maintain all administrative records and correspondence, and consult with the attorney. Classroom assignments complement the office learning experience.

Eligibility
To apply, students must have at least 56 credits by the start of the internship and a 3.0 cumulative GPA is recommended. We welcome all class years and majors.  No prior knowledge of the law is required.

Benefits
At the end of the semester, interns are afforded the opportunity to apply to the Student Defender Program. Both the internship and Student Defender Program provide an excellent opportunity for students considering a law-related career, or any student who hopes to develop writing and interpersonal skills while helping their peers.

Scholarship Application Workshop with Pizza!

Scholarships offered by our college, departments and the university don't always receive enough applications. This workshop is for first year students, sophomores, juniors, and first semester seniors who don't have someone to advise them on submitting a strong application. In this workshop you will:
  • Learn to identify scholarships that fit you
  • Learn what scholarships are available from our college and our departments
  • Learn where to get help writing an application
  • See examples of winning applications
Pizza will be provided!

Rawlings Undergraduate Leadership Fellows

Posted: 21 Feb 2019 06:01 AM PST

Leaders change the world in ways that are transformative, inclusive and long lasting. As a Rawlings Fellow, you engage in a two-semester holistic leadership experience with a cohort of fellow changemakers from all majors. Rawlings Fellows seek out or create opportunities to champion the voices for those who would otherwise go unheard, demonstrate a commitment to ethical leadership, and take an active interest in the community by mentoring and encouraging others. You will work side-by-side with others who share your passion, and you will develop the leadership skills to harness and build upon a community's collective commitment for change.

Applications accepted each Spring for the Fall cohort!

About the Program
Participation in the Rawlings Undergraduate Leadership Fellows Program empowers students to act by equipping them with the necessary skills, resources and support for leadership roles, while engaging in areas of cultural pluralism, advocacy and change. Fellows design and implement their own community action projects, take leadership courses, serve at an internship, and meet elected officials, community advocates and nonprofit leaders. Each Fellow's experience in the program will be guided by his or her interest in a specific policy issue.

The program continues the legacy of Howard Peters "Pete" Rawlings and the work he did as a Delegate in the State of Maryland. He dedicated his life's work to developing ethical
and expert public leaders.
