ALBUM REVIEW: Djaji Prime exemplifies honesty on commendable debut

Posted: 12 Feb 2019 12:00 AM PST

ALBUM REVIEW, Djaji drops a commendable debut project
The album is by no means excellent, but it's equally not even remotely bad.

Music lovers always fancy themselves music-makers; we all had a music maker phase, but music isn't for everyone. What you just read is the default judgmental tendency, peculiar to every music lover; the cynicism that sometimes leads us astray.

In a way, it's also propelled by ego and the feeling that we cannot be surprised by a lot of things. Well, oops, joke's on me. Cynicism ti lazdent.

When I saw that Djaji made music, I didn't know what to think. One thing , however, was certain - he knows music and he has good taste in music. But that also heightened my fears. Music from people who like and know music is either really good or incredibly parched - no middle grounds.

The truth is, some of us actually do have a talent for and a future in music. While Djaji's debut is by no means remotely perfect, it's a commendable effort.

While the mixing is not always the best, being a Travis Scott head, you feel the sonic experimentation with sound warping and layered voicing on some of the tracks, which saved the album from being exposed. If I had two cents, I'd bet that Djaji was as much a part of the production and mixing as Charlie X and the mixer.

Before we go ahead, whoever this woman or women is/are, you didn't win. Like Adele, Djaji gave us an album. Here's looking at you...
From the 'Ex' in the album title, it feels like we're about to get some catharsis.

Travis $cott Influences
A few weeks ago, I watched Travis $cott's interview, pre-release of Rodeo and he talked about most of us who produce and make music started off imitating people we like till we found our path and he was right.

At times as ExPRESSIONS ran along, it felt like an excessive attempt to channel Travis $cott, an artist most deserving of channeling and possibly the greatest music maker of his generation, but such channeling sadly evokes the feeling of creativity stifled.

While inspiration is needed, finding one's artistry is major key to success. The La Flame adlibs sometimes unnecessarily drew attention away from Djaji's artistry and what his project do on its own - sometimes, the adlibs felt too explicit and that will never be a positive.

"PRELUDE: NO COMPETITION" and "HOTTEST IN THE STREET" gave the influences away too easily. Sometimes too, the flow throughout ExPRESSION roved around 2012 to 2016 - Love. Lights. Sick, Bad Mood, S**t On You and The Ends - Travis Scott.

Flow

Intermittently, you want to doubt it's Djaji on the flow as it's simply brilliant. Other times, you linger and hope you get the flow you got on the previous track(s). I guess it's still forgivable, being his first project, but on his second project, we won't forgive some flows.

The idea of a flow is to convey your content and intention in the most attractive way possible. Sometimes, the content is good, but the flow is just not as good. It's why a lot of mumble rappers still get classified with the Lil Pump stereotype despite having enviable content, suited for rap music of any era.

With Djaji, while he's by no means a mumble rapper, the influences of this time are evident in his music. It's good to be cocky that your music will grab a market share, but you need to convey your message in ways as attractive as possible,

While the flow on "NO COMPETITION", "ExPRESSION", "LAST NIGHT", "POT" and "I SHOT MY HEART" were heavy, a song like "SCRAP" is one of those with too playful flows, only saved by ODC's fire hook. "PRELUDE: NO COMPETITION" is another. On these songs, it felt like Djaji was talking, not rapping.

"POT" stands out with amazing introspect and a weirdly excellent beat, but something about the song sticks out. "HOTTEST IN THE STREETS" has a dope beat and hook, but I would have preferred a more aggressive flow scheme when Djaji decided to rap.

I know not all rappers will be naturally aggressive, but on Djaji's second album, I'd love more diverse and surprising flow schemes.

Themes and topical conversations

Though Djaji dwells majorly on the beauty of familiar introspect, the album introduces a unique way of his idea, though the boisterous nature of "HOTTEST IN THE STREETS" is unnecessary . Sometimes, give them what feels true to you, give fans not what they want to hear. The song seemed corny and cliche, but will make a good single, however.

Asides that, the reflection on all the other songs, dwelling on psychedelia, and a hazy relationship that range from parasitic to annoying and occasional dabble in vulgarity brings a feeling of authenticity. However, we got these things on a overkill that one begs for more diversity. It feels like the rapper is not digging deep enough.

Standout tracks
"NO COMPETITION", "MUMU", "ExPRESSION", "LAST NIGHT," and "I SHOT MY HEART."

Fillers
"JABI LAKE VIBES" and "POT."

"Found your way into my heart, so I shot it out my chest"
That above line exemplifies the mad lines of audacious ambition, darkness and purpose that will elude you if you focus on the flows.

Djaji makes music that could truly garner a cult following. It's not remotely bad for a maiden effort. The segue from "MUMU" and "PARANOID" shows the power of thought of the conversational coherence that almost seems excessive at times, but good songs and progression, regardless.

The album starts off with four or five straight heat tracks, but falls off slightly around "SCRAP" and "AM I WRONG?" which have a tendency to bore you.

In the end, ExPRESSION is something more off the Kid Cudi alley - flow sometimes bores you if you aren't listening to the stories being told. As an output, it feels like "A Kid Named Cudi," laced with stories unique to Djaji.

While this project chronicles the beauty of honesty on wax, telling stories of psychedelia inducement, coexisting with excessive dwelling on failed - romantic and personal - relationships which Djaji finally damns to hell on "LAST NIGHT, I SHOT MY HEART," one questions the lack of topical diversity.

The words are not always the most attractive, but the overall themes and stories carried the album through the wishful thinking, scatterbrained episodes that deviate from the good storytelling.

It's by no means excellent, and it sometimes unnecessarily and regularly focuses on distress of drugs and women at inopportune times - one feels Djaji has more to say, but is only telling is what he feels we want to hear.

I didn't expect to like this project, but I love it. I'm a production-head and if anything is excellent on this project, it's the production; near pristine.

That said, this is a project that will age way better than any of us could have hope - including Djaji himself. The reason is simple; the rules of excellent music making is slowly gearing towards how enjoyable a project is and this project is definitely enjoyable if you listen like a fan, and not a critic - It's obvious that time and effort went into it.

The music is in Djaji and I found myself asking, 'Why did he wait this long to drop something?' as I await his next project - not just for the music, but for what his evolution births.

I do like that this project was not another attempt at fake-depth and obviously forced mental health aesthetics to warp critical acclaim.

I'd definitely want more crisp flows on the next project. But Djaji is so adaptable to both singing and rapping that I might again forgive the shortcomings.

P.S: Nigerian rappers should feature Djaji this year, he'd give you a third verse and blood-dripping hooks. He killed all the hooks he did by himself. All the features on ExPRESSION also slayed their jobs. It shows Djaji knows talent just as he knows beats and sound.

Will Smith has taken on the role of the blue-colored genie in Walt Disney's upcoming movie, 'Aladdin.'

Will's role was revealed in a new teaser released by Disney on February 10, 2019.

The first teaser for the film, which debuted in October 2018, left the Genie out.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly on his role, Smith said, 'There's a little bit less mimicking — there's a James Brown piece that we do but a little bit less mimicking. The thing that will be the major addition from me playing the Genie is the hip-hop base. I think that'll be fun for people. I think it'll stand out as unique even in the Disney world. There hasn't been a lot of that hip-hop flavor in Disney history!'

Davido has revealed that he has been getting threats from some yet to be revealed quarters

Posted: 11 Feb 2019 09:30 PM PST

Davido
Davido says he is not bothered or moved by the threats that he has been receiving over the last few days.

The music star made this known via his Twitter page on Monday, February 11, 2019. In his short tweet, Davido announced that he has been getting threats, even though he did not disclose the identity of the people.

"Getting a lot of threats... WE GALLANT DEY WAIT UNA !! 💪🏿💪🏿💪🏿," he tweeted.

Davido's tweet is coming less than 24 hours after he raised an alarm about plans of the government to arrest youths a few days to the elections.

Raising false alarm?

Often times when Davido discusses his interest in politics, the PDP is usually the party he commends as having the right capacity to lead the country. This public admittance has encouraged suspicion concerning the involvement of the pop star in partisanship. A Twitter profile observed while commenting on Davido's tweet warning about mass arrests without providing proof.

"They are planning to start arresting Youths as from next week for no reason be careful my people they know they are going to lose and they have a plan like always let's stick together and let's all be careful on these streets!!," Davido shared in the post that made his followers insist on seeing an evidence.

The warning seemed an advise to young voters who are believed to be targeted in a bid to disenfranchise them. But the advocacy failed to impress Davido's audience some of whom suspected that he was administering fear tactics.

Uganda strenghtens security with automated biometric identification system

Posted: 11 Feb 2019 09:15 AM PST

Tommi Nordberg
Digital security company, Gemalto is supplying its Cogent Automated Biometric Identification System (CABIS) and LiveScan technology to the Ugandan Police.

These biometric solutions enable the police force to better solve crimes through the electronic collection, storage and processing of fingerprints, palm prints and facial captures.

Gemalto LiveScan solution will be deployed in police stations and courts nationwide and will allow capture of biometric data, along with the subject's mugshot and biographical data. Its local partner ISSUL will assist in the installation, project support, and maintenance.

CABIS will enable the police to map distinct characteristics in fingerprints, palm prints and face images and use these to accelerate the matching process. In addition, client tools help forensic specialists to confirm identities and establish robust evidence that will aid the conviction of guilty individuals.

Uganda Police Force will be also trialling Gemalto Mobile Biometric Identification solution, which helps officers capture individuals' fingerprints using a convenient mobile device. Biometric information is securely submitted to the CABIS over-the-air with matches relayed back to the officer directly via the handset.

"Reliable biometric data is an extremely powerful tool for identifying individuals and bringing offenders to justice," said Muhirwa Rogers, Police Undersecretary for the Uganda Police Force. "Investment in Gemalto CABIS and LiveScan technology is the latest step forward in the modernization not just of Ugandan law enforcement, but our wider homeland security infrastructure."

"Gemalto CABIS, LiveScan and Mobile ID technology reinforce the efforts of Ugandan police to tackle crime," said Tommi Nordberg SVP, EMEA Government Programs for Gemalto. "Highly scalable and interoperable, our solutions not only meet the current requirements of the Ugandan authorities but can grow and develop in line with their future demands."

Airtel,Telkom Kenya merge operations

Posted: 11 Feb 2019 09:02 AM PST

Airtel Kenya
Airtel Kenya has announced that it has signed an agreement with Telkom Kenya to merge their respective mobile, enterprise and carrier services businesses as Airtel-Telkom.

Last month, three industry sources had told Reuters that Bharti Airtel was in talks to buy Telkom Kenya, to create a stronger challenger to market leader Safaricom.

The companies will combine their respective mobile, enterprise and carrier services businesses in Kenya to operate as Airtel-Telkom, Airtel said, without revealing further details.

The deal announced on Friday means shareholders of the two companies will agree to merge their respective mobile, enterprise and carrier services businesses in Kenya to operate under a joint venture company.
However, Telkom Kenya's real estate portfolio and specific government services will not be part of the new combined entity.

The two firms will see no immediate changes in their operations or respective leadership and management, legal, organisational and staffing structures.

Both brands, Airtel and Telkom, as well as their respective products and solutions, will continue to co-exist.
Similarly, it is expected that service delivery to the respective companies' customers, as well as engagement with all business partners of both companies, will continue as usual.

"This move is well aligned with the government's agenda to optimise the value of the assets that it holds in trust on behalf of Kenyans while cementing the country's position not only as a regional business hub but also as an international investment magnet," said Kenya's National Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich.

The final shareholding will be determined at the close of the transaction. Telkom Kenya has the option of holding up to 49 per cent of that stake.

The new company will be chaired by Telkom Kenya Ltd's chief executive officer Mugo Kibati, while Airtel Networks Kenya chief executive Prasanta Sarma will be chief executive officer.
The closure of the transaction is subject to approvals by the relevant authorities.

Fintech's adoption will continue to revolutionise the postal landscape in 2019

Posted: 11 Feb 2019 08:53 AM PST

Fintech
Two years ago, Australia Post entered into a joint venture with a company to offer local businesses a single platform to access e-commerce products and other services. Post office branches in the UK offer customers access to the majority of all UK current accounts, while in other parts of the world remittances are now being sent to remote rural communities.

These are only a few examples of how technology in the postal sector is transforming the delivery of financial services – known collectively as fintech. Once considered part of the back office, fintech has stepped into the spotlight and is now an essential feature of front office processes using computer-based and mobile software.

As fintech possibilities grow, postal operators have seized on its ready potential. They recognize that a highly connected physical postal network forms a natural bridge linking the financial and electronic networks and capable of delivering value to customers and governments alike.

Can postal operators take advantage? The UPU's Postal Financial Services Coordinator Sergey Dukelskiy believes so. He says that, instead of developing their own fintech solutions, Posts are actively looking for partners and already existing marketing solutions that are cheaper and faster to integrate.

His view chimes with that of the UPU's Digital Inclusion and Policy Issues Expert Daniel Nieto who said in a recent interview, "Building from scratch is also sometimes unnecessary as there are companies that can help you build successful new services. If you want to avoid the investment of considerable time and resources, partnerships offer the best solution."

The UPU's Postal Technology Centre's Account Relations and Product Management Coordinator David Avsec expects fintech to evolve further in 2019. "I think we will see evidence of the fintech sector's ability to change the financial services landscape and drive down costs," says Avsec.

He contends that the focus on mobile banking and micro-lending and the absence of big infrastructure costs make fintech ideal for the less developed world. "Fintech is facilitating the expansion of networks. It can enable access to payment networks for millions of people previously denied this opportunity," Avsec maintains.

Regulation also plays a strong role. "Although huge progress has been made, problems remain. E-wallets on mobile phones, for example, are still not accepted in some countries and legislation needs to keep up with technological change," says Avsec.

The fintech discussion, according to Avsec, also has to account for blockchain's influence. He stresses that, in the struggle to integrate secure transactions and ally operations to finance and technology, blockchain could be the missing link.

"There is a large range of market solutions, but they do not always speak to each other. In 2019, I think you will begin to see more evidence of blockchain becoming fintech's unifying force," he says.

Dukelskiy agrees that blockchain will influence fintech. "Blockchain can help reduce transaction costs, savings that can be potentially passed on to customers."

In early April of this year, UPU will bring experts to Berne, Switzerland for a conference titled, "Shaping postal financial services in a digital economy". The conference aims to promote promising and exciting out-of-the-box solutions for postal operators, including blockchain and blockchain-driven cryptocurrencies.

Why ethnic nationalities adopted Atiku, by Clark

Posted: 11 Feb 2019 06:12 AM PST

Edwin Clark
Ijaw leader, Chief Edwin Clark has explained why ethnic nationalities picked Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential Atiku Abubakar as their anointed candidate for Saturday's presidential poll.

Elders of various groups in the six geo-political zones of the country last week endorsed Atiku as their candidate.

Clark said Atiku was picked ahead of other candidates simply because he is the only that agreed to restructure the country.

Besides, Clark noted that Atiku possesses what it takes to represent Nigeria among the comity of nations.

Briefing newsmen at the weekend, the former National Commissioner said the South-South stands for restructuring and would only vote for the candidate that will restructure to ensure equity and justice.

The 91- year- old elder statesman said the only thing left on his agenda is restructuring, which he vowed to pursue with the last drop of his strength.

He stressed that restructuring the country has nothing to do with the breaking up of Nigeria but the creation of a new Nigeria where every citizen is equal and all the Federating states or regions are able to develop at their pace under the practice of Fiscal Federalism.

According to him: "We have now seen that our salvation is in restructuring. If we do not restructure this country, this country will not survive."

"So people are now asking what do we do? In any civilized country, the election is the deciding factor.

"Nobody forces himself on you. You go to the poll and vote. Our message if you want to restructure Nigeria, you are our man and if you do not want to restructure Nigeria, you are not our man.

"So people are wondering why we adopted Atiku.  Some of our boys who think they are Jews have said dying old men have been taking money from Atiku.

"So ladies and gentlemen, we believe that Nigeria belongs to all of us. So when we had that so many people were interested in being the president of Nigeria, and we decided to invite about seventeen of them including Atiku and the rest.

"The PDP presidential candidate in our discussion with him, which lasted for two hours, told us that he supports restructuring and he has been working for it since 1985.
"From the bottom of our heart, we saw that Atiku Abubakar was the only sincere person who believed in restructuring."

He also noted that the choice of Atiku was not made by just two people but people from the six geo-political zones.

Christian votes will make the difference, says Wike

Posted: 11 Feb 2019 06:07 AM PST

Nyesom Wike
Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has called on Christians to troop out and vote during the forthcoming elections because their votes will make the difference.

Speaking during a special combined Sunday Worship Service at the Deeper Life Camp Ground, Rumudara, Port Harcourt, Wike said Christians can no longer stand aloof while the country slides into destruction.

He said that Christians should not believe the false propaganda that they cannot influence the outcome of political contests in the country.

"You must vote during the forthcoming elections.  If you don't vote and a bad leader emerges, you are part of those that brought that bad leadership.

"Your vote can make the difference.  So go ahead and vote to effect a positive change", he said.

He charged the church not to allow the children of God to be surrounded by those not supposed to be in charge of leadership.

The governor said that all Christians have witnessed first-hand the failures of the last four years of the Federal Government which have destroyed the economy, engendered unemployment, insecurity and dictatorial tendencies.

He said this was the opportunity to chart a new direction.

Wike said that all efforts of Christians to ensure the country makes progress would be crowned when they vote for their preferred choice.

He appealed to Christians to continue to pray against those plotting electoral violence and bloodshed in Rivers State.

He said: "Please pray for this state. Pray against those plotting electoral violence in this state. Pray for the state to have peaceful and credible polls.  Those plotting shall be disappointed.

"None of my supporters should engage in political violence on my behalf.  Nobody should use violence to support me".

The governor stated that security agencies plotting bloodshed in Rivers State will be consumed by their plot and Rivers State will emerge victorious.

He said Christians should pray that God enables Judges to act right despite the intimidation and false propaganda by the APC Federal Government.

The Deeper Life Camp Ground Youth Choir Ministered to the congregation in a Special number where they declared that they are no longer slaves to  sin and fear, but children of God.

State Head of Deeper Life Church, Pastor Chike Onwuasunya said truly Governor Wike is Mr. Project as his projects are visible.

He declared that all those making prophecies and preaching violence against Rivers State will witness the peaceful elections.  He said all evil plans will fail.

He urged Deeper Life members to vote to determine the positive  direction  of the country.

PDP to Buhari: Your Presidency reeks of corruption

Posted: 11 Feb 2019 06:00 AM PST

Kola Ologbondiyan
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Sunday declared that President Muhammadu Buhari has failed the integrity test and has no moral rectitude to pontificate on corruption.

The PDP said the President has entangled himself and soiled his administration in corruption.

In a statement by its spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan, the PDP said if there is any person whose activities of corruption have become a threat to the coming election, it is President Buhari.

The main opposition party accused the President of financing his campaign with looted funds while surrounding himself with politicians indicted for corruption.

The statement was a reaction to President Buhari's accusation of corruption against the PDP, particularly with regards to the opposition party's campaign expenses.

But the PDP it has all the while refrained from calling out the President on his "various indictments" for corruption, even during his reign as a military ruler. The statement reads, "A clear reading of Mr President's statement today shows that he is not yet aware that Nigerians have decoded his mastery of concealments of corruption in his Presidency and are no longer interested in his failed self-acclaimed fight against corruption.

"President Buhari presides over the most corrupt and incompetent administration in the history of our nation, for which Nigerians are very eager to go to the polls on Saturday to vote him out of office.

"If Mr President were to be aware, he would have discovered that his entire surrounding reeks of moral, institutional and integrity corruption.

"But since he has consistently claimed not to be aware of anything around him, it is imperative to let him know that the fish in his pond is rotten from the head.

"Clinical examples can be drawn from his campaign council. Nigerians are aware that not a few members of this council have been indicted for malfeasance bordering on corruption

"Is it not strange therefore that President Buhari who wants Nigerians to perceive his administration as fighting corruption, will cast a net into the ocean and bring out only corrupt people to run his campaign?

"The truth is that Nigerians have seen more than enough of the fake fight against corruption and have come to a conclusion that President Buhari is merely paying lip services to this fight. He has no intention to do it and even if he had the opportunity to govern perpetually, he will never fight corruption.

"Rather than seeking for sympathy votes, President Buhari should simply admit his failure in governance and allow Nigerians to build their future by getting our nation working again under the leadership of Atiku Abubakar".

Atiku’s candidature, a blessing to Nigeria, says Jerry Useni

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governorship Candidate in Plateau, Rtd. Gen. Jerry Useni, says that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar's presidential candidature is a blessing to Nigeria.

Useni spoke through his running mate, Dr James Dalok, on Sunday before a group of PDP supporters in Ketang, Mango Local Government of Plateau.

The PDP flag bearer said that the pedigree of Atiku was beyond human understanding and very capable of rescuing Nigerians from the hardship the All Progressives Congress (APC) had brought upon them.

"Atiku has what it takes to rescue Nigeria and Nigerians from the socioeconomic mess this present administration brought upon them.

"I wish to assure you that the long-abandoned Panyam-Bokkos-Wamba Road and Gindiri Regional Water Plant will be completed if Atiku and himself as governor of Plateau," he said.
Useni called on the people to vote wisely in the forthcoming elections to ensure that Atiku was voted into power.

He assured the people of the state of better and appealing people-oriented policies and programs.

Also speaking, Mr Caleb Mutfwang, former Chairman, Mango LG appealed to party supporters in the council to vote massively for Atiku and Useni.

"We won't disappoint our own son, Dalok, Useni's running mate but give our bloc votes to them to lead us to the promised land," he said.

‘Masses root for Buhari in Kwara

Posted: 11 Feb 2019 05:47 AM PST

Muhammadu Buhari
The people of Kwara State have called for support for the re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari, saying his administration has brought succour to millions in the countryside.

Speaking at an event organised  by 'Speak Up Nigeria,' a  pro-Buhari civic group that is harvesting people's opinions of the administration, beneficiaries of the government's various peogrammes took turns to commend the president and seek support for his second term bid.

Alhaji Risikat Agbeyangi, a pepper seller and beneficiary of Trader Moni at the popular Ipata market, hailed Buhari for bringing governance directly to the poor.

"We thank the president for his support to us; it was timely and met our personal and business needs, some of us expanded our business with it," she said.

"We have resolved to maintain our support for Buhari and his supporters in Kwara state against all odds."

Balogun Kabir, a benefiary of N-Power Health, said the programme was a great boost for public health at the grassroots as masses now have direct access to tips on basic health issues.

Jimba Abioye Yahya, a beneficiary of the N-Teach and resident of Magaji Ngeri of Ilorin west, thanked Buhari for the employment opportunity.

"I want to advice Nigerian youths to vote Buhari and Pastor Yemi Osinbajo, who saw us as productive elements in the nation and not just instruments of political violence. I am grateful for the employment opportunity they gave me and my fellow Nigerian Youths," he said.

Kwara State public relations spokesman of N-Power beneficiaries, Salman Habeeb Olesin, said the Buhari administration has brought succor to millions of unemployed youth.

"President Buhari has employed over 500,000 youths through the N-Power programme. I am a trained teacher lying idle before Buhari came, but he gave me the opportunity of practicing and making a living out of what I know and have passion for, teaching. I want PMB to continue beyond 2019," he said.

Omowunmi Akinsefunmi, a resident of Basin road in Ilorin, said the N-Power scheme offered her internship opportunity to train as a technician.

"I beg the Nigerian youths to see voting Buhari again as opportunity to a better Nigeria as we can't afford going back to the bad old days," she added.

Mallam Aliyu Dansokoto, a pepper seller in Ipata Market and beneficiary of MarketMoni, said: "The N10,000 given to us by the President Buhari-led Federal Government aided our business and we found things easy during his tenure. I am enjoying Nigerians to vote Buhari again for a better Nigeria."

Kwarans in Lagos endorse Abdulrazaq

Posted: 11 Feb 2019 05:43 AM PST

Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq
Political slogans are easy to discredit if the forces behind them are just run-of-the-mill politicians. But, experience has shown that slogans, which become street language and resonate with all segments of the society may be hard to put down.

This seems to be the situation in  Kwara State where O to ge (enough is enough), a political slogan adopted by the main opposition APC, appears to have assumed a life of its own among Kwarans at home and abroad. The term simply means that the people have had enough of the political leadership of Senator Bukola Saraki who the opposition accuses of stifling development and growing his political dynasty at the expense of the state. Saraki's followers have responded to the increasingly popular lingo with another refrain Otunya, which means 'onward with Saraki's rule'.

However, the O to ge movement seems to be gaining more grounds with prominent apolitical groups, and individuals expressing tacit support for a new dawn in Kwara. In a video that has gone viral on the social media, revered head of the Markaz Islamic and Arabic Centre Agege Sheikh Habeebullah Adam el-ilory was seen saying the Sarakis are not the only ones in Kwara and time is indeed ripe for a change of guard.

"Many Kwarans condemned Mohammed Lawal in 2003, but it is now clear that they had made a wrong choice of a new leader. Lawal had his own shortcomings, which I told him one-on-one. But, the difference between him and the current political leadership is clear. So, others should now be given a chance to run the state too," the scholar said at a recent lecture in Ilorin.

Qomorudeen Ayeloyun, a multiple award-winning Islamic singer and Ilorin indigenes, has also released a video clip condemning, the "stagnation and stunted growth" in Kwara.

"We have heard enough. O to ge, oh my God, it is enough. This state has remained the same in terms of lack of development and creativity in governance. We must move on now," he said.

This lamentation appears to be a global phenomenon among Kwarans, especially non-politicians. The old and young shout O to ge everywhere in the state,. especially during recent political rallies.

The icing on the cake was the unanimous endorsement penultimate Sunday of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq by the Kwarans in Lagos, an adhoc amalgam of indigenes of Kwara in the country's commercial capital and environs.

The Teslim Balogun Stadium venue of the event was filled to the brim as indigenes of the state gathered in honour of AbdulRazaq. Attendees included businessmen and women, professionals, academics, artisans, broadcasters and famous artistes such as Saheed Balogun, Wasiu Sodiq, and Ibrahim Labaeka.

Some of other prominent personalities at the event included AbdulRazaq himself; House of Representatives member Tunji Olawuyi; Muhammad Dele Belgore SAN; Barrister Kunle Sulaiman; Senator Khairat Gwadabe; former information commissioner AbdulRaheem Adedoyin; House of Assembly member Saheed Popoola; and former local government chairmanship candidate for Ilorin West Musibau Eshinrogunjo..

Sodiq, one of Nigeria's most famous Islamic singers and an indigene of Kwara, said the state must turn the page on a political model that "strips our people of their humanity while the state remains stagnant like a pond."

Abdul Muyideen Akorede, the coordinator of Kwarans in Lagos coalition, said the event was symbolic as it was the first time indigenes of the state in the diaspora will speak with one voice on the political situation back home.

"We have resolved to end the tyranny in our state Kwara. The state must be saved from the clutches of oppression. No physical development, no companies, infrastructure is zero. It's time we ended this. O to ge," he said, backing AbdulRazaq's aspiration.

"Kwarans in Lagos and the diaspora express their unflinching support for this movement. Kwarans are not lazy. We are productive people and we condemn the underdevelopment in our state. Our support is contingent on the condition that the new administration will do things differently. On behalf of Kwarans, I assure you of our unflinching support. We will mobilise our people to vote for you in the polls."

Sonifoxy: 'Davido Is My Dream Husband'
Sonia Nwankwo, better known as Sonifoxy is a fast rising actress and singer whose melodic voice and creative knack for role interpretation has given her an edge to excel on the fiercely competitive Nigerian entertainment industry.

In this interview, the Anambra State born movie starlet speaks on the challenges of a Nigerian actress, plans to hit Texas, USA for The African Film Festival, relationship and lots more.

Aside acting what else do you do?
Asides acting and singing, I also own a Farm.

Who are those who admire in the entertainment industry?
I admire a lot of people especially the women. One of the people that inspired me growing up is Stephanie Okereke. I remember wanting to act like her. I also Admire Patience Ozokwor (Mama G), Ini Edo, Genevieve Nnaji too. There is so much I still learn from them.

Who's your entertainer crush?
Hmmm well, I love a lot Nigeria Entertainers due to the fact that we are taking it by force , but I think when it comes to crushing, I would just go for David Adeleke popularly known as Davido (laughs).

Can you marry him, if he ask you to?
I think he is in a serious relationship which is very much visible.

But what if, you path crosses?
If it's my Destiny, why not? I will marry him all over.

So you can marry a younger lover? Does age matter to you in relationship?
Age is nothing but a number , if a younger lover will make me happier and contented so be it.

What do you look out for in a man?
My ideal man would be very patient , loving, understanding and above all Godfearing.

How about his pocket and other physical features?
Those other things can be worked towards. There are not primary.

What's next for you? Is there any new project you're working on?
Musically yes, am working on a song that I'll be performing at The African Film Festival in Dallas Texas, USA, where I have been invited to be part of the Workshop and also Perform Live.

How does your man cope with your busy schedules?
I don't have a serious man yet, but before I do I'll get to let him know my schedule and see if he can deal with it.

How supportive are your parents of your chosen career?
At first they weren't supportive at all especially my dad. But when they saw the outcome of my jobs they are beginning to get in line. My mum is my biggest fan now, she even goes as far as watching my movies and downloading my songs even before I inform her.

Have you encountered s3xual harassment in the industry, even at your early stage?
Everybody has, but I think the way you handle it is what matters. When I started I remember losing a lot of roles all because I refused to play some dirty games, but am glad now that my talent is gradually subduing the s3xual harassments.

Do you watch your movies to see your flaws?
Yes I do, I criticize myself a lot and try to be better.

How do you improve on them?
I try to be open to criticism in as much as I know it hurts, and I also watch my role models who have been there before me and learn from them.

What's your unique selling point?
I really don't even know my selling point , all I try to do is better myself everyday.

How do you deal with male fans?
I love all my Fans dearly because they have brought me this far and still going. As for my male fans I love them too but sometimes some of them try to cross boundaries.

However, I know how to handle them without being offensive. My male fans are the best ever.

2019: APC, PDP revel in psychological battle

Posted: 11 Feb 2019 05:29 AM PST

Muhammadu Buhari
In the run-up to this week's presidential election, the two major parties have been using various strategies to outwit each other. One of such strategies is the mobilisation of crowds to attend their rallies in various parts of the country, to create the impression that the parties and their candidates are popular. Deputy Political Editor RAYMOND MORDI, who has been following the trend, reports.

WHEN the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, kicked off his campaign in the Northwest zone at the Shehu Kangiwa Stadium, Sokoto last December, a mammoth crowd graced the occasion. This gave the impression that the party and its candidate are popular in the region.

Yet, when President Muhammadu Buhari, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), stormed the Northwest, the crowd was equally overwhelming. The president was full of gratitude to the people of Sokoto, for their massive turnout at the stadium.

Similarly, the crowd that greeted President Buhari last month when he arrived at the Rwang Pam Township Stadium, Jos, Plateau State, to the campaign was so overwhelming that he could not enter the venue. The stadium was jam-packed. So much was the surge that waiting for about an hour, the President waved at the gathering and left for Abuja. Governor Simon Lalong said the mammoth crowd suggested that the people had endorsed his candidature for the second term.

A similar scenario has been replicated in the campaign rallies of the two major parties in virtually all the states they have visited so far. Indeed, the photos and videos of such rallies, which are all over the internet, have been sparking bitter rivalries and recriminations between supporters of the two parties, as well as their members.

For instance, Governor Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna State sought to downplay the essence of the crowd that stormed Atiku's Northwest campaign in Sokoto, by alleging that the PDP rented the crowd that attended the rally from Niger Republic. El-Rufai spoke while delivering a keynote address at the launch of the campaign council of his party at Murtala Mohammed Square, Kaduna, the following day.

He said: "Thieves have ganged-up against President Muhammadu Buhari. Yesterday they were in Sokoto, and they rented crowd from the Niger Republic just to show people that they have supporters, because Sokoto people refused to come out."

In like manner, the PDP Presidential Campaign Organisation (PPCO) also berated the APC National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, for making derogatory comments about the party's presidential rally held in Owerri, Imo State, on January 22.  The campaign organisation said Oshiomhole was discomfited that the people of Imo and Nigerians in general are rallying behind its presidential candidate, as well as its governorship candidate, Mr Emeka Ihedioha, by storming the venue of the rally.

The two parties are battling to outdo each other in the psychological battle for popularity. The strategy has been used with a measure of success over the years. People are hired and ferried across towns and villages in order to add colour to campaign gatherings.

But, in the campaign for the 2019 general elections, crowd renting has become one of the political strategies that the political parties are using to outwit their opponents, because of the possibility that intending voters may resort to following the crowd when they perceive a particular party as the dominant one.

What does the mobilization of mammoth crowd to campaign grounds portend for the parties? Observers say the presence of a huge crowd at rallies amounts to nothing more than a psychological battle for the two major parties. Lawyer and activist, Monday Ubani, said: "The presence of crowd is purely for psychological triumph. Whether this will translate to physical victory is a different kettle of fish. Crowd pulling can be intimidating, it makes your opponent work harder to counter the effect."

But, at the end of the day, it is the number of votes that are cast for the party on election day that really matters. Ubani said: "The critical question is how many of these people have their permanent voter's card (PVC) and how many of them believe in the party they came to cheer? Crowd is good and has some good effect on the party that pulled them, but they must work hard for the crowd to translate to real voters for them."

To the National Chairman of the United Progressive Party (UPP), Chief Chekwas Okorie, the campaigns of the two leading parties are nothing more than jamborees or cultural extravaganza, because the rallies place more emphasis on singing and dancing and display of specially-designed party uniforms. No serious issues are discussed at the campaigns; as the gathering are usually distracted and barely pays attention to what the politicians are saying.

The UPP Chairman said the electorate is becoming increasingly conscious and political parties may not be able to get away with the "cultural extravaganza" in the name of campaign rallies. He said: "Now, that votes are beginning to count, the issue of crowd mobilisation will play a lesser role in determining who wins the contest. In recent times, we have been hearing so much about vote buying. This is a clear indication that votes are counting.

"Prior to this time, votes never counted, so the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) simply connived with the party in power and declared results and in the process voters were sidelined. The upsurge in vote buying suggests that political parties are now aware that voters matter.

"If we take this further by introducing electronic voting, where people can cast their votes from the comfort of their homes and their places of business, then the issue of crowd renting will disappear, because the parties will now be required to engage the electorate and convince them, rather than the cultural extravaganza called rallies today.

"Fortunately, voter participation is increasing, with the introduction of the Card Reader. Besides, we now have 84 million registered voters. This is a huge number, even for the United States of America. The consciousness is beginning to build up in the minds of our people."

Nevertheless, it will take some time before the Nigerian electorate becomes fully conscious. Okorie said ruling parties have a way of exploiting their incumbency to gain advantage. He said: "The way I see it, the two major parties have states under their control and this can be very instrumental when it comes to the final day mobilisation of voters. The APC has 20 states under its control and that is quite instructive.

"Beyond the rallies, when you look at the figures, INEC has given us an idea of what to expect. For instance, the Southwest has 16 million registered voters and the six states in the region are controlled by the APC. Then, in the Northwest, you have 20 million registered voters and six out of the seven states in the region are in the APC as well. So, the regions with the highest number of registered voters ate controlled by the APC. That is a huge advantage and don't forget that what will determine the winner of this election is a simple majority.

"From all indications, the two major parties will meet up with the requirement of 25 per cent of votes in 24 states. After that, the winner will be determined by a simple majority and that amounts to where you have more numbers. So, it is easy for anybody to see that the APC will win this election."

Okorie said many of the parties are indulging in crowd renting because "to some extent, it gives the parties hope when they people turnout en masse during their rallies". He added: "A good number of people you see at rallies come from distant places, so somebody must have paid for their transportation to and from the venue and their attendance fees¡ that is what normally happens."

He agrees with Ubani that the presence of a huge crowd may not be a true reflection of the strength of a party. His words: "Tomorrow, another vehicle comes and the same people jump into the vehicle to attend the rally of a rival party. So, it may not be a true measure of the strength of a political party."

Elder statesman, Alhaji Tanko Yakassai, 93, said crowd renting is a new phenomenon. He said during the First and the Second Republic people attend rallies on their own. The former National Assembly Liaison Officer to President Shehu Shagari said: "Nobody makes arrangement for the transportation of those who attend rallies, but people still go on their own to witness such events.

"Nowadays, nothing is left to chance; the richer you are, the bigger your crowd. In those days, we either trek or go on bicycle or motorcycle. Today, they hire different kinds of vehicles to ferry people to and fro and everybody that attends the rally are paid an allowance for doing so.

"So, the crowd you see in rallies today does not necessarily represent the strength of the party. If you study past elections, there has never been a situation where half of the electorate voted. The turnout is usually 30 to 38 per cent or 40 per cent maximum. So, don't be deceived by the crowd you see at rallies, because they are usually paid for it hired. They are not party supporters or volunteers.

"Do you know that in 1978/1979, the defunct National Party of Nigeria (NPN) provided flight tickets for its presidential candidate, the late Alhaji Shehu Shagari, and his security details, to go to Sokoto from Lagos, to campaign; he never bought a ticket for himself.

"Today, it is the candidate that provides money for all sorts of expenses for the campaign. From this, you can see the reason why our democracy is now for sale to the highest bidder.

Possibly, it is the same crowd that attends both APC and PDP rallies, because they have no permanent party affiliation, but are just out to make money. This is because there are no employment opportunities and people are looking for something to eat."

Actress Amanda Ebeye “I cannot choose between my marriage and career”

Posted: 11 Feb 2019 05:27 AM PST

Nollywood actress Amanda Ebeye
Nollywood actress Amanda Ebeye has made it known that her career is way more important than any relationship.

Speaking with Punch, the mom of one said she would never sacrifice her career for marriage.

"I cannot choose between my marriage and career. Being married doesn't mean your life should stop. You get married for you and your spouse to become teammates on the same field, and you are supposed to encourage each other. Once you see signs that a man is not ready to support what you do as a woman, there is no need to continue the relationship."

The actress continued saying many fall into the wrong hands due to their belief that they can change a man.

"If a man beats you in marriage, he must have slapped you before you got married. Since you dated him for a while before marriage, you cannot say you did not see signs of violence in him but women turn their back against those things. I have always told myself that I wouldn't stay with any man who doesn't support what I do. My career is very important to me and I don't joke with it. I am not a woman who stays at home and does nothing."

On feminism, she said; "I love feminism; it paved the way for a lot of things happening now. But for feminists, I would be at home now. If a woman says she doesn't like feminism, it means she doesn't know the meaning. The fact that women talk freely and aspire to become presidents someday is because of what some feminists had done. Many years ago, women didn't have the rights to certain things. I am a feminist but not an extremist. If I don't work, I will die before my time."
