Black Panther spotted in Africa for the first time in 100 years

Black Panther spotted in Africa for the first time in 100 years (Photos)
An African black leopard also known as 'Black Panther' has been spotted in Kenya for the first time in 100 years.

Biologists captured the rare footage of a big cat strolling in Kenya, making it the first time the animal has been photographed in Africa since 1909, more than a century ago, in Ethiopia.

Nick Pilfold, a San Diego Zoo global scientist, said they captured the footage after months of watching and waiting. His team of biologists had placed remote wildlife cameras to track the leopard when they heard unconfirmed reports of a possible black leopard sighting.

"We intensified our camera placement in the area the reports were being made. Within a few months, we were rewarded with multiple observations on our cameras" he said

The female leopard's coat color is pitch black as a result of melanism, a gene mutation that results in an over-production of pigment, Pilfold said. It's the opposite of albinism — and although the leopard's coat appears black during the day, its rosette patterns are visible in nighttime infrared imagery.

Tv Host, Joselyn Dumas has a word for ladies in Relationship

Posted: 13 Feb 2019 10:30 PM PST

Ghanaian actress and television show host, Joselyn Dumas
Ghanaian actress and television show host, Joselyn Dumas has advised women to stop milking men and empower themselves too.

Joselyn says if a man loves you, the little you can do is to appreciate him and not walk out of the relationship because he lacks the ability to financially sort all your needs.

She then asked women to get a job to help themselves instead.

According to Ghana Web, Joselyn says;

"Dear sisters, if you have a man who loves you and cares about you with the little he has, appreciate it and be content with it.

"Stop getting into relationships because you have a lot of demands and wants and you want your man to take care of them all.

"You should stop making your man a goldmine or consider him as your father that he has to take care of everything of all his Daughter's Needs. Your man also has a life to live and his own demands to fulfill.

"In addition to that, also stop getting into relationships with high expectations. High expectations will kill you and you will get disappointed for nothing.

"If you are with someone and they are unable to provide everything you want yet you adore them, then find a job and cater for yourself.

"If you can't find a job or you are handicapped then walk out of the relationship instead of cheating and find someone capable or an organization for disabled people to support you. Otherwise cease getting into relationships and marriages for wrong reasons.

"Money can't buy love and happiness. If it did then most rich people wouldn't have been single, they wouldn't have been crying for love and they wouldn't have been divorcing every now and then. Money just sustains life but it can't complete everything! Be Wise"

Photographers Call Out Bbnaija’s Tobi Bakre For Allegedly “Stealing” Creative Ideas,He Reacts

Posted: 13 Feb 2019 09:30 PM PST

Bbnaija's Tobi Bakre
Ex-BBNaija star and former banker, Tobi Bakre have been accused of stealing some creative ideas.

The two photographers, Ayo Max @Shutterbouy and @Ayofilmit in a viral tweet on Monday, alleged that Tobi used the photoshoot ideas they shared with him through an official email without crediting them.

This came hours after Tobi shared new photos on social media showing him on a boat, garbed in elaborate Yoruba traditional attire, a concept the photographers claimed to have come up with.

@Ayofilmit tweeted, "This is wrong bro. My twin and I shared this photo shoot idea with you in a private email; you ignored the email and shot our concept. That's wrong bro very wrong cc @shutterbouy".

While this photo has earned Tobi the accolades of many, the film director whose name on Twitter is @DirectedbyDiji accused him of stealing that concept.

According to Diji, his friends sent a mail to Tobi Bakre briefing him about this particular concept. However, the mail was supposedly ignored by the BBNaija star. Upon seeing a photo that seemed to have the nuances of his friend's concept, @DirectedbyDiji drew the conclusion that Tobi had gone ahead to steal his friend's creative idea and use it with another photographer.

This conclusion caused him to take to Twitter to share photos of the mail his friend had sent to Tobi and raise an accusation.

See his tweet below:

Following the buzz of the accusation, Tobi responded through his Instagram page @tobibakre.

He said his mails were managed by his management and not him.

He also denied stealing the idea, adding that the decision to use the boat was decided on set by his team, especially his stylist @Rogue_ng.

He said, "I have a team/management that reads and responds to my work emails. Never was the mail brought to my attention.

"All my works as a photographer have no element of copy in them. My creative genes are still fully functional. It's evident in all that I do. Thank you.

"The idea to use the horse and the boat came from @rogue_ng the Stylist. I only added the extras of the creative process.

"I reaffirm that never in this lifetime will I take or use someone intellectual property without due process. I am also a creative and will never condone such," Tobi said.

His creative director, Saddic tweeted a response @Kissity collaborating the story that the photoshoot concept was unplanned and he never saw the alleged email nor had an idea about using a boat as props.

"Hello. I'm the creative director of @rogue_ng and the shoot with Tobi.

"I never saw your email with him nor did he tell me about this idea.

"I went to oniru days before the shoot and saw the lifeguard boat and the concept came to me immediately.

"When the other photographs from the shoot are out, you'd see we ran with a lot of concepts and the boat idea was just one of them.

"The only idea Tobi added in this pic was the fisherman with the fishnet. I have been designing the attire from scratch since last year and I didn't even have any model or photographer in mind at the time.

"There are a thousand photographs with a model on a boat in a lake or river so don't get it twisted. The shoot wasn't orchestrated by him, it was by me!!

"This isn't even the main idea. The center theme was a horse and royalty and we were supposed to shoot in eko Atlantic but couldn't get access so we opted for oniru," Saddic said.

Meanwhile, some twitter users have expressed divergent views over the development.

Below are some of the reactions:

@zowiehillz, In the creative land One may see a ripe mango n think of eating it…another may plan for the same mango to eat n make juice from it Lesson: Excute ur idea wen its ripe cox u never knw sum1 else has a better version of the same plan as u have!!

PDP Has Mocked President Buhari, APC Over ‘failed’ Abuja Rally

Posted: 13 Feb 2019 03:21 PM PST

PDP
The main opposition party, in Nigeria, the Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP ) has mocked President Muhammadu Buhari over what it described as "scanty attendance" at his campaign rally in Abuja on Wednesday.

The opposition party said the event was a parody and further indication to the President and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Nigerians have rejected them ahead of Saturday's presidential election.

In a statement on Wednesday by the spokesman for the PDP, Kola Ologbondiyan, also said the scanty attendance at most of President Buhari's rallies in various parts of the country has further revealed the APC only fabricated figures in its claims that 14.8million  of its members voted for the President at the flawed convention, The Nation newspaper reports.

The PDP said: "Nigerians can now further see that the figures were concocted by APC leaders to give an impression that President Buhari has massive support across the country, as well as use it as basis to allocate fictitious figures for him in the Presidential election.

"President Buhari, who was pelted by Nigerians at his campaign rally in Ogun state on Monday, again slurred at the Abuja rally and, as usual, could not even articulate any meaningful message for his very scanty audience at the Eagle Square in Abuja.

"The PDP says the failed rallies, should serve as an ample signal to President Buhari and the APC that Nigerians have moved ahead in rallying with the people's candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and no amount of enticement or intimidation can change that resolve.

"The PDP therefore urge compromised officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and our security agencies to note the tide and extricate themselves from any form of entanglement or pact to rig the elections for President Buhari, as they will be doing so at their own peril".

Akpabio Reportedly Seeks President Buhari’s Help To Change Akwa Ibom INEC REC

Posted: 13 Feb 2019 02:57 PM PST

Chief Godswill Akpabio, former Governor of Akwa Ibom State Governor and now Chieftain of the ruling All Progressive Congress,  APC, has allegedly sought Buhari's direct intervention in changing the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Akwa Ibom State, Mr Mike Igini.

The opposition  Peoples Democratic Party, PDP and the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC in Akwa Ibom State have been bickering on the issue of redeployment of the INEC REC for Akwa Ibom state in the past few days.

To register their discomfort over the continued stay of Mr Igini in office as REC for Akwa Ibom State The All Progressives Congress (APC) had petitioned the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmood Yakubu, calling for Igini, for alleged hatred for the party.

In the petition entitled: "Petition against Mike Igini, the REC in Akwa Ibom State for his unbridled partisanship and partially: A request for his redeployment to avert anarchy," and signed by the APC state Chairman and Secretary, Ini Okopido and Augustine Ekanem, respectively, the APC said it had established that "in total violation of his oath of office and code of conduct for senior electoral officials, Igini is working hand-in-glove with Governor Udom Emmanuel, to rig, manipulate and influence the forthcoming elections in favour of the governor and his party, the People's Democratic Party's (PDP)."

But the Peoples Democratic Party in Akwa Ibom State through its secretary Harrison Ekpo in a counter-petition to INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu had insisted that the only crime of Mr Igini which is fuelling the calls and frantic efforts to get him redeployed has been his refusal to "cooperate with the APC and its leaders especially, Chief Godswill Akpabio who has confessed that he has made several overtures to the INEC REC without success."

However fresh facts have emerged chief Akpabio may have not rested in his bid to get Mr Igini out of Akwa Ibom State as the former Akwa Ibom State Governor is said to have sought the help of President Buhari Chief of Staff Abba Kyari to help him sit with the President no matter the busy schedule so as to brief on why the INEC REC must be redeployed to another state.

A source close to the Presidency disclosed that to help Akpabio brief the President on the issue and get his nod, Chief of Staff to President Buhari, Abba Kyari had given orders to the Protocol team to ensure that Akpabio sits close to the President at the APC Port Harcourt Presidential Rally against laid down protocol arrangements or sitting arrangements followed at previous campaigns.

According to the source; "To be honest, it is always difficult for the President to sit with anyone one he comes back from any campaign because he would definitely be tired. So the only assistance the chief of staff could offer him was to sit him close to Mr President at the Port Harcourt rally so Akpabio try to bring up the matter with Mr President" Our source said.

It was further gathered that the only time senator Akpabio was able to bring up the matter before President Buhari was in the presence of APC National Chairman Adams Oshiomole.

The former Senate Minority Leader is said to have told President Buhari that if he hopes to win Saturday's election in Akwa Ibom, the only way out was to send Mr Igini out of Akwa Ibom State and bring in someone else who is "friendlier" Also recommended for redeployment by Senator Akpabio is the new Commissioner of Police, Bashir Makama.

The source said Mr Kyari was to take up the matter afterwards.

Efforts to reach Special Assistant to Senator Akpabio, Anietie Ekong on his Glo mobile number for comments on the issue were unsuccessful as the mobile operators said his number could not be reached.

Tompolo - Buhari Military Killed My Father, Why Should I Endorse Him?

Posted: 13 Feb 2019 02:30 PM PST

Tompolo and President Buhari

Fugitive Government Ekpemupolo, alias Tompolo, has distanced himself from the reports that he has endorsed the reelection bid of President Muhammadu Buhari.

There had been reports that he had endorsed Buhari's candidature earlier on Wednesday. Tompolo was said to have been part of five ex-militant leaders set to endorse President Muhammadu Buhari as its preferred presidential candidate.

However, he said he wasn't aware of the said endorsement, coordinated by Ebikabowei Victor Ben, a.k.a. Boyloaf.

A statement signed by Paul Bebenimibo, media adviser and consultant to Tompolo, read: "It must be pointed out that Tompolo has not been in touch with Boyloaf since 2015. Tompolo is not into endorsement politics. Tompolo is presently troubled with the way and manner his kinsmen in Gbaramatu kingdom are being harassed and intimidated by President Muhammadu Buhari's military on a daily basis, Sahara Reporters reports.

"This same military harassed, brutalised and killed his father, Chief Thomas Ekpemupolo, in 2015, and up till now President Buhari has not made any statement by way of apology to him. And so, what will be the reason for Tompolo to endorse him? To further kill his kinsmen? Tompolo has been in agony since 2015, as the present government is after him for unsubstantiated allegations of corruption.

"It is not true that Tompolo is part of those who are set to endorse President Buhari in Port Harcourt. Therefore, President Buhari and the general public should disregard the news as it is purely fake news."

JUST IN: Amosun Opens Up On Dumping APC For APM, Endorsing Atiku

Posted: 13 Feb 2019 01:42 PM PST

Ibikunle Amosun, Governor of Ogun State

Ibikunle Amosun, the Governor of Ogun State,  has responded to rumours of his purported defection from the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC to an opposition, the Allied Peoples' Movement, APM.

A report earlier today alleged that Amosun had defected to APM and endorsed Atiku for President. In a telephone chat with his spokesperson, Eshomomoh Imoudu, PoliticsNGR learned that the report was 'false'.

Imoudu stated that Governor Amosun remains a member of the ruling APC adding that he has no reason to decamp as he is the current senatorial candidate for Ogun Central under the party.

It will be recalled that on Tuesday, the leadership of the APC vowed to deal with Amosun over the poor-conduct of the party's rally in Ogun state last Monday.

Fears of an internet shutdown on the rise in Nigeria

Posted: 13 Feb 2019 01:49 PM PST

With less than a week until the Nigerian election, there are mounting fears that access to the internet and social media services could soon be restricted.

The run-up to the vote, which will be held on February 16th, has been plagued by rumours that there are plans to shutdown the internet while the election takes place.
Despite this, the National Security Adviser (NSA) maintains that it has no plans to interfere with telecommunications operators in the coming weeks.

Given the uncertainty, it's worth investigating the major events that have prompted people to fear the use of an internet kill switch in Africa's most populous country.

The Dismissal of Justice Walter Onnoghen
On January 25th, President Muhammadu Buhari unilaterally dismissed the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, on grounds that he failed to declare personal assets before taking office.

Many of the government's critics have argued that it was an attempt to silence the judiciary before the upcoming election and opposition parties temporarily halted their campaigns in protest.

Buhari's spokesperson has refuted these claims, arguing that critics are making an "illogical" connection between the chief justice and the legitimacy of electoral procedures.

Regardless of the rationale, according to the 1999 Constitution, only the National Judicial Council has the power to recommend the removal of justices which also requires ratification from the wider judiciary and Senate – two steps that were not taken by Mr Buhari.

The chief justice could be a vital actor in the upcoming election as it is their responsibility to preside over electoral disputes, making Onnoghen's sudden dismissal appear to be politically motivated.

This led the main challenger to Mr Buhari, Atiku Abubakar, to call the suspension "an act of dictatorship."

The adoption of these extra-legal powers has not gone unnoticed internationally, with the British High Commission offering a statement that said "the timing of this action, so close to national elections, gives us cause for concern" as it "risks affecting both domestic and international perceptions on the credibility of the forthcoming elections."

As many now perceive Buhari to be willing to act outside of the law, fears of similar actions – such as shutting down access to the internet – have been heightened.

As Victor Ekwealor wrote in Techpoint Africa, "the Nigerian government in itself has not inspired much confidence in its citizens to be trusted on matters like this."

Not only does President Buhari's disregard for the constitution cause concern about the sanctity of digital freedoms, the increasing use of internet shutdowns throughout the continent has also led to a normalization of the practice.

The Rise of Internet Shutdowns Across Africa
According to a report by Access Now, there were 21 internet shutdowns across Africa last year and, with three instances in the first month of 2019, this number is set to rise.

In the past two months, citizens in Zimbabwe, Cameroon, Sudan, Gabon and DR Congo have all been unable to access the internet at times of unrest.

Despite their unique contexts, each regime has used similar arguments to justify their actions. Namely, that the internet should be restricted during times of instability to protect national security.

As the spokesperson for the Zimbabwean government, George Charamba, said on January 30th: "it's standard practice" to shutdown the internet "whenever you have a very serious disturbance in any country."

This is not just an African trend, governments from Venezuela to India are increasingly turning to digital restrictions as a means of maintaining control. In fact, Charamba also cites a supposed shutdown in Britain as proof of its ubiquitous nature, saying "we saw it recently in the UK."

With a growing acceptance of internet shutdowns as an appropriate reaction to political and social instability, people are understandably concerned that the Nigerian election will provide the grounds for a similar reaction.

This is particularly significant given the competitive nature of the election. According to a report by the BBC, it is "too close to call and the result is likely to be close" which could increase the chances of disturbances.
However, it's not just external factors that have left citizens feeling apprehensive about the coming election, there has also been a direct accusation made by a political figure from the opposition People's Democratic Party.

Governor Nyesom Wike's Accusation
On January 31st, Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, accused the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) of directing the Independent National Electoral Commissions (INEC) to work with telecommunications providers to restrict access to the internet next weekend.

Speaking at the Government House Port Harcourt, he said: "The national security adviser has met with INEC to ensure that internet service providers shut down the internet, so that foreign bodies won't see what's happening in the country during the elections."

This accusation gained a significant amount of traction online and was perhaps one of the reasons that Quartz Africa's guide to staying online was their most read story of the week, with traffic driven solely from Nigeria.

The NSA quickly responded to the accusations in an attempt to debunk what they consider "misinformation."

The press release goes on to state that the NSA "remains committed to protecting the rights of the public to access Information and Communication Technology facilities."

Whether or not this will appease those concerned is unclear. However, with international monitoring and rising domestic political pressure, any attempts to limit internet access in the coming weeks are likely to be met with widespread condemnation.

With growing fears about the extra-legal powers of Buhari, the rising number of shutdowns across the continent, and the claims of Governor Wike, there are several good reasons why Nigerians may be fearful of having their access to the digital world restricted.

However, if the NSA acts in accordance with their press release, there are reasons to hope for an unaffected election.

Whatever happens with, the election is likely to be contentious and tightly fought one, with most predictions suggesting that it's going to be close.

It's also unlikely to be entirely free from accusations of corruption and voter fraud. In fact, Buhari has already claimed that there is evidence of money laundering and vote buying. Additionally, the recent fire in an electoral commission office suggests that the election is not going to be free from controversy.

However, if the internet is restricted it could lead to even more damaging outcomes, with citizens being left in the dark over the results and a greater potential for vote tampering.

After the 2015 election placed Nigeria firmly on a democratic trajectory, it's vital that an internet shutdown is not used to undermine the democratic processes and destabilize the country.

5 Tech Predictions for 2019 and beyond

Posted: 13 Feb 2019 10:41 AM PST

The tech market is already home to a range of smart hardware and software, but smart devices are set to become even more widespread in our day-to-day lives.

2018 was a year of exciting advancements and 2019 promises to be an even greater year when it comes to tech – Ryan Martyn, co-founder and director of Syntech, has put together 5 tech trends to look forward to this year.

1. The rise of blockchain commercial solutions

We will see a proliferation of blockchain technologies taking over the regulation of a wide range of processes that have historically required a level of human validation. We can expect an impact in industries such as insurance where pay-outs can be approved and executed without human intervention.

2. Digitising healthcare

There's already a host of smart hardware and software augmenting everything from screening and diagnosis to treatment adherence and care services. The opportunities for tech to continue to improve access and quality of healthcare are vast.

3. Our spaces will get smarter and smarter

IoT, AI, ML (machine learning) and advanced data analytics are already converging to make homes and workspaces smarter. A multitude of devices formulated with open standards will set the scene for everything potentially talking to everything else.

4. Online ecosystems will continue to disrupt retail

Initially, e-Commerce disrupted retail with the price but it will go on to entirely change the way we purchase. Today we benefit from more extensive product ranges, independent ratings, and reviews as well as more competitive prices when shopping online.

5. Tech will drive increasing polarisation between people

Applied AI across our social media accounts and internet searches already deliver to us the news and views, the advertising and marketing, the products and services that reinforce our beliefs and perceptions. There are numerous high-profile examples where evidence that is not credible and validated by an authority easily becomes fact and influences people's decisions and actions.

Martyn gave further insights on how these trends may affect jobs in Africa and the importance of familiarising ourselves with these trends so as adopting them.

What type of jobs will these trends create?

Businesses that use technology to optimise their services will stand to benefit the most from these trends. With the help of automation and AI, specialised services will become more accessibly priced and become widely adopted.

Expect to see more jobs available for software developers, particularly with the rise of blockchain commercial solutions, IoT, AI, and machine learning.

The healthcare industry will be able to diagnose and treat a far greater portion of the population using smart medical devices. It's likely that field admin and nurse positions will start to cover some of the roles that previously only doctors could assist with.

We should also expect more jobs for installers and energy consultants with the rise of smarter and greener spaces.

With a push to online ecosystems, we will see more opportunity for small businesses and innovative e-commerce companies in the market.

Lastly, thought leaders, marketing and SEO specialists, and influencers will become even more prevalent as applied AI, social media, and internet searches change the way we access products and news.

Why is it important that we familiarise ourselves with these trends?

Businesses that aren't ready to adapt to these trends could face significant disruption to their business interests. On the other hand, the businesses that do embrace them have the potential to disrupt industries and quickly scale in markets that have been dominated by big business or previously inaccessible.

Realistically speaking, how close are we to adapting to these trends in Africa?

Despite the negative sentiment about Africa lagging the rest of the world, these conditions also present unique markets and opportunities for business. Regarding smart healthcare solutions and software development as an example, the South African industry is advanced.

How will these trends benefit African businesses?

South African businesses that embrace the skills needed to enable these trends have the potential to disrupt industries and scale in the local market and globally. Our weak exchange rate and relative operating costs position our businesses well to capitalise on global market requirements.

What are some of the challenges that business and consumers could face in adapting to these trends?

Resistance to technology for fear of job losses
Lack of market size to justify the investment
Affordability of solutions
Wide open spaces and logistics to get to all corners of South Africa

The Presidential election comes up on Saturday 16th of February, 2019.

Buhari and Atiku called for free, fair and non-violent elections.

While stressing that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the security agencies have given their words in readiness to conduct free and fair elections, he urged the youths not to allow themselves to be used for violence.

Noting that there is fear towards the election just like any other elections, he urged Nigerians to pray for Nigeria as it goes into the elections.

The President also said that the only real party is Nigeria and that elections are only important to the extent to which they make Nigeria strong.

Atiku again appealed to INEC and the security agencies to ensure free, fair elections.

He recalled the words of former President Goodluck Jonathan where he said that his ambition is not worth the blood of any Nigerian.

Atiku said that the Nigerian democracy should emerge stronger than the 2015 general elections that was adjudged the freest and fairest in the country.

The former Vice President specifically appealed to President Buhari for everyone who casts his or her vote to have confidence that the votes will count.

"We must abide by the will of the people," he stated.

Alhaji Atiku Abubakar at the Peace Accord signing in Abuja

Read below the full transcript of a speech delivered by the Presidential Candidate of the main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Atiku Abubakar at the second Peace Accord signing today in Abuja:

"May I use this opportunity to renew my profound gratitude, firstly to my party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and then to General Abdulsalami Abubakar and members of the Peace Committee for their tireless enthusiasm, dedication, and passion towards ensuring the success of this Peace Accord Process!

Our gathering here today clearly demonstrates the importance of the upcoming elections as well as how our democracy has matured, not only to our people, but also to the international community whose solidarity, Nigeria's democracy has benefited from.

As we prepare to sign off on this Peace Accord, as representatives of our party and people, may I freely quote the words of former President Goodluck Jonathan, which remains a benchmark, for me, taking into account the deep feelings that prevail as February 16th, 2019, approaches.

"My ambition is not worth the blood of any Nigerian."

In this context, I appeal once again to every staff and the leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Nigeria Police Force, to be fair arbiters in the upcoming elections while letting neutrality prevail.

For emphasis and in the spirit of fair play, I also urge our security agencies, not to embark on indiscriminate arrests of members of the opposition, 24 to 48 hours before elections, as has been the case in previous elections.

Hopefully, our democracy should emerge stronger from this process with the 2019 elections proving better managed than the 2015 process, which was adjudged free and fair with the then opposition's victory unobstructed

Consequently, I also appeal to the President, General Buhari, to use his good office to ensure that every eligible person who casts their vote is confident in the process and in the belief that their vote will count.

Additionally, every candidate must remember that this election is about the future of Nigeria, therefore, we must abide by the will of the people as freely expressed through elections, under the terms of our constitution.

Once again, despite concerns expressed by my party leaders concerning likely electoral malpractices and the intimidation of voters and observers, I trust that our election officials and security services will do their duty in accordance with their oath and obligations.

In conclusion, I appeal once again, to our citizens, to go out and cast their votes for the candidates of their choice, to be peaceful at all times, and confident in our democracy, its institutions and processes.

So, please go out this Saturday to vote for your future and the future of our great nation.

May God bless you and God bless Nigeria"

CCT: Prosecution asks for arrest warrant against Onnoghen

Posted: 13 Feb 2019 04:43 AM PST

Walter Onnoghen
The prosecution in the charge against the suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Wlater Onnoghen before the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) has applied for the issuance of a warrant of arrest on him (Onnoghen).

Lead prosecution lawyer, Aliyu Umar (SAN) made the application at the resumption of proceedings on Wednesday morning.

Umar noted that Onnoghen has consistently absented himself from the tribunal since proceedings commenced on the charge in January this year.

He said both the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) and the Practice Direction of the CCT provides that a defendant must be present in court before any proceedings can be conducted in respect of a pending charge.

Lawyer to the defendant, Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN) is currently making a counter-argument, urging the court to, among others reject the prayer for the issuance of an arrest warrant against Onnoghen.

Details shortly…

Ex-SGF Babachir Lawal: Court Grants Babachir, Others Bail

Posted: 13 Feb 2019 04:41 AM PST

Babachir Lawal

A Federal High Court in Abuja has granted the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal and two others bail in the sum of N50m each with one surety.

This came after Lawal appeared in court for the first time on Tuesday since his dismissal two years ago over the allegations of fraud to which he pleaded not guilty.

The former SGF was arraigned alongside five others by the Economic and Financial Crime Commission on 10-count charges of fraudulent diversion of funds meant to assist persons displaced by Boko Haram, Guardian newspaper reports.

He was removed from office in October 2017 after a three-man committee comprising Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, National Security Adviser Mohammed Babagana Monguno and Attorney-General and Justice Minister Abubakar Malami was set up by President Muhammadu Buhari to investigate the allegations against him.

Osinbajo submitted a report into the claims in August 2017 suggesting his sack.

What happened to power sector cash, by Obasanjo

Posted: 13 Feb 2019 04:33 AM PST

Olusegun Obasanjo
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo is of the view that those who believed his administration wasted $16 billion on power project implementation with nothing to show for it lacked proper understanding.

In a reply to queries on what happened to the $16 billion power sector funds under his administration, the former president said it was wrong for anybody to rely on what he called "unsubstantiated allegations against him by the then leadership of House of Representatives over the project".

Before President Muhammadu Buhari vowed yesterday to probe the multi-billion dollar project, he had in May last year, queried where the funds went.

The former President, who responded through his media aide, Kehinde Akinyemi, blamed the query on lack of proper understanding.

He said:  "It has come to the attention of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo that a statement credited to President Muhammadu Buhari, apparently without correct information and based on ignorance, suggested that $16 billion was wasted on power projects by "a former President.

"We believe that the President was re-echoing the unsubstantiated allegation against Chief Obasanjo by his own predecessor but one.

"While it is doubtful that a President with a proper understanding of the issue would utter such, it should be pointed out that records from the National Assembly had exculpated President Obasanjo of any wrong-doing concerning the power sector and has proved the allegations as false.

"For the records, Chief Obasanjo has addressed the issues of the power sector and the allegations against him on many occasions and platforms, including in his widely publicised book, "My Watch" in which he exhaustively stated the facts and reproduced various reports by both the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which conducted a clinical investigation into the allegations against Chief Obasanjo, and the Ad-Hoc Committee on the Review of the Recommendations in the Report of the Committee on Power on the Investigation into how the Huge Sums Of Money was Spent on Power Generation, Transmission And Distribution between June 1999 and May 2007 without Commensurate Result.

""We recommend that the President and his co-travellers should read Chapters 41, 42, 43 and 47 of My Watch for Chief Obasanjo's insights and perspectives on the power sector and indeed what transpired when the allegation of $16 billion on power projects was previously made.

"If he cannot read the three-volume book, he should detail his aides to do so and summarise the chapters in a language that he will easily understand.

""In the same statement credited to the President, it was alleged that there was some bragging by Chief Obasanjo over $16 billion spent on power. To inform the uninformed, the so-called $16 billion power expenditure was an allegation against Chief Obasanjo's administration and not his claim.

"The President also queried where the power generated is. The answer is simple: The power is in the seven National Integrated Power Projects and eighteen gas turbines that Chief Obasanjo's successor who originally made the allegation of $16 billion did not clear from the ports for over a year and the civil works done on the sites.

""Chief Obasanjo challenges, and in fact encourages, anybody, to set up another enquiry if in doubt and unsatisfied with the EFCC report and that of the Hon. Aminu Tambuwal-led ad-hoc committee."

Ogun APC Rally: What Buhari said after attack on him, APC leaders at Abeokuta

Posted: 13 Feb 2019 04:27 AM PST

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday appealed to Ogun traditional rulers to prevail on their subjects to be law abiding and show respect to constituted authority during and after the general elections.

''I am happy for what you have done on voter education so that your people can choose whoever they like from whatever party,'' he said.

Buhari spoke at a meeting with Ogun State traditional rulers, led by Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, Daily Post reports.

The meeting was held after he and other All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders were pelted and booed at the party's rally in Abeokuta, the state capital.

The president, however, hailed Vice President Yemi Osinbajo for his role in delivering on the 'Change Agenda,' particularly in his capacity as the head of the National Economic Council (NEC).

His words: "Him (Osinbajo) being the Chairman of NEC is in a very strong position to know what we are earning and what we are doing with the earnings.

''I am very pleased with his vast experience and intellect. He has captured effectively what the administration has done and I commend him for playing a very great part in that. Thank you, Mr Vice President.''

The President told the traditional rulers that in all the States he had visited so far for his re-election bid, he had taken time to explain to Nigerians the achievements, programmes and future plans of his government in the three key areas of economy, security and anti-corruption.

''On the promises on security, I have mentioned repeatedly that the people of the North East appreciate our undertakings because you cannot manage a country unless it is secure. We have succeeded in that and we thank God,'' he said.

The President noted that Nigeria has attained food security under his watch, adding that many farmers have testified that fertilisers are now available and affordable.

''Fighting corruption is the most difficult under our system but still, we have not given up. We are steadfast in our determination to ensure that those who abuse trust are brought before the law and punished,'' he added.
