Crack in Benue APC over presidential campaign funds

Posted: 18 Feb 2019 12:40 AM PST

There is a crack in the Benue State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Its leadership appeared divided over funds released for the presidential and National Assembly elections.

It was learnt that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) postponed the elections to save APC in Benue State from recording a heavy defeat at last Saturday's polls.

The state's APC stakeholders were in an expanded meeting yesterday at City Bay Park in Makurdi, the state capital, to address contending issues.

The Nation investigation revealed that on the eve of the elections, APC leaders disbursed funds at the Makurdi home of the Director General of Jime-Ode Campaign Organisation, Chief Tilley Gyado.

Some key party chieftains were alleged side-lined.

Sources said a "cabal" within the state APC family outsmarted others and shared the funds among its members.

The development was said to have resulted in bad blood and divided loyalty, which pushed some members to vow to work against the party at the postponed polls.

At yesterday's meeting, the aggrieved members reportedly stated their grievances and urged the party's State Leader, Senator George Akume, to henceforth take charge of logistics ahead of Saturday's polls to avoid another conflict.

Most APC stakeholders expressed dissatisfaction with the way some party chieftains hijacked its affairs and made it a "one-man show".

A party chieftain from Otukpo, Peter Ogwuche, said the APC campaign in Benue State was being managed like a cult.

He said: "There is no publicity. You don't even see journalists around them. No one got to know of APC presence in Benue State."

Ogwuche said a national newspaper was right to have predicted that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) would win in Benue State because APC members appeared bent on going after campaign funds.

He added that INEC's postponement of the polls seemed to be a divine intervention.

Attempts to speak with the State Chairman of the party, Comrade Abba Yaro, were unsuccessful.

He was reportedly still consulting with other party bigwigs at the stakeholders' meeting.

The meeting was still holding last night and journalists were sent out of the hall.

Why restructuring is panacea to Nigeria’s problems, by Afe Babalola

Posted: 18 Feb 2019 12:34 AM PST

Aare Afe Babalola
ELDER statesman and Founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti, Aare Afe Babalola, SAN, has reiterated that Nigeria may continue to grapple with its prevailing problems of spiral unemployment, insecurity and under-development unless the country treads the path of restructuring.

Specifically, Babalola, who received the management team of the Nigerian Tribune in his office in Ado-Ekiti over the weekend, said until Nigeria goes back to implement the blueprint the trio of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, the late Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe and the late Sardauna painstakingly fashioned out for 10 years in Lancaster House, England between 1950 and 1960, Nigeria may find it difficult to evolve as a nation.

His words: "Those who know me would appropriately recall that I have been championing the course of restructuring for sometimes now. On November 4, 2011, the descendants of His Majesty, King Abbi Amachree IV, the Amanyanbo of Kalabari, gathered together in Port-Harcourt to celebrate the First Memorial Lecture. The Board of Trustees, including the talented Prof. Tam David-West, brought together a large crowd including the Deputy Governor and the Vice President. I was honoured to deliver the 1st Memorial Lecture titled, 'Nigeria in Search of a Nation'.

"I was then and I am still an advocate of restructuring Nigeria. In my articles in the Vanguard and Tribune Newspapers on Wednesdays and Thursdays respectively, I have published many articles on the restructuring of the country. As a member of Constitutional Conferences, I have also argued in favour of true federal structure. The truth is that today, there is a strong wind of restructuring blowing over the country. It is not just strong a wind, it is a hurricane restructure. The loud voice of those who desire a united and strong country, which would deo volenti metamorphose into a nation is that the country should be restructured."

He thanked the management of the Nigerian Tribune, led by the Managing Director, Mr Edward Dickson, for coming to congratulate him on his announcement as the winner of the much-treasured Obafemi Awolowo Leadership Prize for 2018.

Chief Emeka Anyaoku, the chairman of the Selection Committee of the Obafemi Awolowo Leadership Award had announced at the 70th Anniversary of the rebranded Nigerian Tribune on January 29, 2019 that Babalola was voted the winner on account of the inherent qualities of political strategy, education, integrity, caring for the welfare of the masses, consistency policies and courage among several others, which constitute a veritable nexus that binds the first Premier of Western Region, the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo and Nigeria's frontline legal icon, educationist and valiant entrepreneur as well as unsparing philanthropist, Aare Babalola, together.

Anyaoku said Babalola was found worthy of the Prize because of what he described as his "genuine commitment to promoting the cause of humanity, which has marked you out as a philanthropist, whose social consciousness is a source of inspiration to millions of Nigerians".

Anyaoku added: "Afe Babalola has distinguished himself in the provision of quality education just like the sage, advocacy for the masses through legal intervention and other means to deserve the award".

The Obafemi Awolowo Leadership Award is for individuals, who have demonstrated the attributes of political strategy, education, integrity, caring for the welfare of the masses, consistency policies and courage among several others for which the late Premier of Western Region was well-known.

Addressing his visitors, Babalola likened the place of the media in any society to what would happen to a blossoming flower in the desert, which will eventually wither away un-noticed and unsung, stressing that for institutions like the Nigerian Tribune and its array of talented editors and reporters, many of the accomplishments of his increasingly famous Afe Babalola University may have gone unnoticed.

He praised the Awolowo Foundation for finding him worthy as the winner of the coveted Obafemi Awolowo Leadership Prize, which he described as invaluable on account of the achievements of his nine-year-old university, where he has been breeding a new generation of Nigerians and leaders.

Delving into the accomplishments of ABUAD in its short history of existence, Babalola said: "Here in ABUAD, we have students from all the 36 states of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory. And that makes us different. That stands us out. We are building a new generation of leaders that will change the world.

Speaking on the departed sage in whose memory the Prize was instituted, Babalola hailed Awolowo for his firmness, kindness and fearlessness as a result of which he was able to make the old Western Region the clear leaders and a toast of other regions in those days.

His words: "Continuity is the essence of government. A good leader must be firm, kind and fearless and we all know that Awo was fearless and we all know what he did as Premier of Western Region. Unfortunately, people conspired to jail him, but he remains a hero forever.

"If Chief Awolowo can wake up today, I am sure he will confirm what the Afenifere chieftain, Chief Reuben Fasoranti , said about me on November 12, last year, to wit: 'Since creation, God has made billions of souls, but you, Aare Afe Babalola, must be in the league of the most caring, the most humble, the most contented, and the most selfless of all souls, (thereby) living true to the calling of selfless to humanity.

"If it is possible for any mortal to be perfect, you will be my top nominee. Happy birthday to a wonderful and a quintessential human being. You are one in a kind. Enjoy your day to the hilt my Aare. God bless your heart and continually make you a shining star to mankind."

Earlier Dickson had congratulated Babalola for emerging the winner of the coveted Prize, thus making him the third African after Nigeria's Prof. Wole Soyinka and former South Africa's President, Mr Thambo Mbeki.

He stressed that the Prize confirmed Babalola in the mould of the late sage, who was well-known for his interest in education, human capital development and caring for the underprivileged members of the society.

The Nigerian Tribune chieftain said Babalola's winning the Prize for 2018 is the more worthy of celebration bearing in mind that the prize has not been won by anyone in the last four years because the meticulous selection committee for the award did not find anyone worthy in those four years to be so awarded.

In Anyaoku's words, the Prize has not been awarded since Mbeki carted it home in 2014 because "there was no individual in Africa among nominees worthy to be honoured with the award in the last four years because none met the criteria spelt out to justify their candidacy for the honour".

According to him, the Obafemi Awolowo for Leadership Award is for individuals, who have demonstrated the attributes of political strategy, education, integrity, caring for the welfare of the masses, consistency policies and courage among several others for which the late Premier of Western Region was well-known, stressing that it was only Babalola, who was found worthy as an individual among the current nominees to receive the award.

His words: "Afe Babalola has distinguished himself in the provision of quality education just like the sage, advocacy for the masses through legal intervention and other means to deserve the award."

Buhari: no plan to remove INEC Chairman Yakubu

Posted: 18 Feb 2019 12:28 AM PST

Muhammadu Buhari
There is no plan to remove Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman Mahmood Yakubu over the abrupt postponement of the general elections, the Presidency said yesterday.

A leading politician has alleged that President Muhammadu Buhari was planning to give Yakubu the push over last Saturday's postponement of the elections.

"It is not true," a Presidency source said.

The denial came amid claims that Prof. Yakubu has taken charge of logistics for the elections.

Besides, The Nation learnt,  the electoral agency is to release details of the state-by-state collection of Permanent Voters' Cards (PVCs).

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, debunked the reports that Yakubu was to be removed.

Shehu said: "Those reports are utterly baseless and false. There is nothing like that.

"Whoever is saying the President is removing INEC chairman is just displaying his illiteracy. Let him go and read the constitution.

"You need a resolution by two-thirds majority of the Senate for any such action."

The clarification by the Presidency came against the backdrop of the agitation by National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP), Prince Uche Secondus, and the alarm raised by the amorphous Coalition of United  Political Parties( CUPP) that President Muhammadu Buhari was plotting to remove the INEC chairman."

Another government source, who spoke in confidence, said: "What PDP National Chairman Secondus wanted was more of electoral anarchy, which this Buhari administration will not oblige him. Resignation or removal of INEC chairman is never contemplated by the President.

"Buhari's administration  will not change the rule in the middle of the game. Asking INEC chairman to quit will cause rumpus within INEC management , disrupt all preparations for the poll and create unrest nationwide.

"The opposition has a hidden agenda, which this government will not buy into. We will also not play into their hands. The INEC chairman will remain in charge of the electoral agency."

Secondus said the "shoddy" arrangement for the elections by INEC was "a deliberate agenda" of President Buhari to cling on to power even when it's obvious to him that Nigerians want him out.

Secondus called on Yakubu to resign immediately.

The PDP leader  warned that the party will not accept anything short of a well organised electoral process devoid of manipulation,   harassment and intimidation of voters and the opposition, particularly members of the PDP.

Having failed in all their nefarious options to enable them cling on to power, the APC and the INEC came up with the idea of shifting  elections, an action that is dangerous to our democracy and unacceptable, Secondus said.

Sections 157 and 158 of the 1999 Constitution prescribe conditions for the removal of the INEC chairman and National Commissioners as well as board members of nine other agencies.

Section 157 says: "(1) Subject to the provisions of subsection (3) of this section, a person holding any of the offices to which this section applies may only be removed from that office by the President acting on an address supported by two-thirds majority of the Senate praying that he be so removed for inability to discharge the functions of the office (whether arising from infirmity of mind or body or any other cause) or for misconduct.

"(2) This section applies to the offices of the Chairman and members of the Code of Conduct Bureau, the Federal Civil Service Commission, the Independent National Electoral Commission, the National Judicial Council, the Federal Judicial Service Commission, the Federal Character Commission, the Nigeria Police Council, the National Population Commission, the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission and the Police Service Commission.

"(3) All members of the National Population Commission shall cease to be members if the President declares a National Census Report as unreliable and the report is rejected in accordance with Section 213 of this Constitution."

Section 158 (1) says: "In exercising its power to make appointments or to exercise disciplinary control over persons, the Code of Conduct Bureau, the National Judicial Council, the Federal Civil Service Commission, the Federal Judicial Service Commission, the Revenue Mobilisation and Fiscal Commission, the Federal Character Commission, and the Independent National Electoral Commission shall not be subject to the direction or control of any other authority or person."

A source, who spoke in confidence, told The Nation that "the INEC chairman had told his team of his plan to supervise the logistics for the elections". He said from Monday, he will shift base to the airport to take stock and monitor the airlift of sensitive materials to all the states," The source said, adding:

"He has vowed not to leave any stone unturned. The latest plan is to ensure that all the 36 states and the FCT are ready for the first phase of the elections on or before Thursday. We want everything set in 8,809 Registration Areas, Wards and in 119, 973 Polling Units and 57,023 Voting Points nationwide so that accreditation can take off simultaneously on Saturday.

"If the Central Bank of Nigeria or the Nigerian Air Force cannot cope with the airlift of materials, INEC has floated a Plan B to engage chartered aircraft. No stone will be left unturned."

Meanwhile, the electoral commission may release the statistics on collection of Permanent Voters' Cards on state by state basis during the week.

A National Commissioner said: "We will be as transparent as possible. During the week, we will release the statistics of PVCs' collection per state. Also, each Resident Electoral Commissioner ( REC) will be mandated to make the breakdown of the PVCs available to the public on local government basis.

"While it is true that over 84million eligible  voters registered, not all of them collected their PVCs. We want to give account of what was collected before the poll."

The CUPP on Saturday raised the alarm over an alleged plan by the President to suspend the INEC chair.

It alleged that President Buhari was planning to replace Yakubu with Amina Zakari as Acting Chairman under the guise of INEC's inability to conduct the presidential and National Assembly elections.

According to CUPP, Buhari wanted to sack the INEC chair  for refusing to conduct staggered election.

In a statement by its National spokesperson, Ikenga Ugochinyere, the CUPP alleged that the Buhari-led APC sabotaged INEC distribution of materials and turned back to condemn the electoral umpire.

The coalition warned that the move to sack INEC chairman will throw Nigeria into full electoral and constitutional crisis.

The statement reads: "The Coalition of United Political Parties is alerting the world of plan and decision by President Muhammadu Buhari to announce the suspension of the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Mahmood Yakubu, from office.

"The President has also pencilled down Amina Zakari for appointment as the Acting Chairman citing her experience as the oldest and most experienced National Commissioner of the Commission.

"The President is planning to use the excuse of inability to hold election today (Saturday) as a reason for the imminent suspension.

"Feigning ignorance of the real reasons behind the shift, the President in his earlier statement did not have just a word for the shameful and despicable actions of security forces and the central Bank staff who in obedience to Presidency directives deliberately sabotaged the distribution of sensitive materials in selected states.

"We are aware that his hurried return to Abuja today (Saturday) from his home state, Katsina is to sack the INEC boss. But this should be resisted by all well-meaning Nigerians and the international community.

"The sin of the INEC chairman is that he refused to conduct staggered elections that will allow the President and his men to manipulate the process.

"The Presidency had mounted pressure on the Commission to conduct election today (Saturday) in states where there were no issues and postpone only the states with materials distribution issues. The INEC Chairman insisted on conducting the election at the same time, hence warranting the postponement of the entire election.

"We hereby warn President Buhari that the position of the INEC chairman is independent, hence, he cannot be removed from office via suspension. The 1999 Constitution in Section 157(1) states that the Chairman and members of the Commission may only be removed by the President acting on an address supported by two-thirds majority of the Senate that the person be removed for inability to discharge the functions of the office (whether arising from infirmity of mind or body or any other cause) or for misconduct."

50 vehicles, shops destroyed in Oworo cult war

Posted: 18 Feb 2019 12:23 AM PST

Fifty vehicles and several shops were vandalised yesterday in Oworoshoki, Lagos, in a cult war.

Twenty persons have been arrested over the clash, which started around 2am and lasted till 7am.

The hoodlums shattered the vehicles' windscreens and looted shops.

Some residents told The Nation that shouts of "Kill them all, kill anyone you see" and sporadic gunshots woke them from sleep, forcing them to flee their homes.

It was gathered that Ayo Odugbesan, Church, Oke Eri, Odo Eran and Aralamo streets, among others, were affected.

A source, who pleaded anonymity, said they saw the street urchins around 7pm on Saturday and alerted the police.

"At about 7pm, we saw those boys trooping to our area. Some people fled because some of those boys were arrested recently and sent to jail. How they regained freedom and found their way back is surprising.

"We are not safe in Oworo. These cultists are making life unbearable for us. We need help in this area. The destruction started around 2am.

"No death was recorded. It seems their target was to kill the night guard, but he escaped.

"They shot non-stop, smashing vehicles. They were just destroying things. It was around 5am that people came out and saw the massive destruction. They were moving from street to street, vandalising vehicles," he added.

A Community Development Association (CDA) executive said they were afraid that the hoodlums could return.

He appealed to security agencies to deploy additional personnel in the area.

According to him, over 50 vehicles were affected.

"We will convene a meeting soon over the incident," he said.

Lagos Command spokesman Chike Oti, a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), told The Nation that 20 persons have been arrested.

He said policemen were mobilised as soon as information filtered in about the incident.

"Commissioner Zubairu Muazu has deployed additional security, including operatives of counter-terrorism and anti-cultism units in the area. Investigation is on. Twenty suspects have been arrested. As I speak with you, there is increased security presence in the area. No one died and no one sustained injury. Yes, vehicles were vandalised," he said.

Southern Kaduna, CAN attack El-Rufai over Kaduna killings, say governor lied

Posted: 18 Feb 2019 12:17 AM PST

Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai
Kaduna State Governor Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai has come under attack over the killings in Kajuru Local Government Area.

The Southern Kaduna People's Union (SOKAPU), the indigenous community of the troubled area, Adara Development Association and the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) ,in their separate reactions, called El-Rufai a liar.

The Kaduna State's chapter of CAN, SOKAPU and Adara people also accused the governor of trying to instigate a crisis in the area.

But, El-Rufai, who visited the scenes of the killings, warned against politicising the tragedy. The governor said those minimising the casualty figures are bigots.

SOKAPU called on the Inspector General of Police and Department of State Services (DSS) to investigate the killings, insisting tht El-Rufai's claim that 66 persons were killed was false.

The union said  it was in the character of Governor El-Rufai  to promote violence through spreading hate speech for the advancement of his waning political survival.

In a statement by the body's spokesman, Yakubu Kuzamani, he said "SOKAPU is shocked at the deliberate falsehood by El-Rufai who found it convenient not to inform the world of an earlier attack that claimed the lives of 11 Adara natives.

"SOKAPU is convinced that el-Rufai is on an irrevocable journey of inflaming ethnic conflagration that has always been in line with his deliberate chronicle of profiling Southern Kaduna people as favourably disposed to violence.

"We are startled that it was the governor and not the police that announced the alleged killings in Kajuru. Let Nigerians and the world know that should there be any breakdown of law and order in Kaduna State, Governor El-Rufai should be held responsible.

The statement went on:  "SOKAPU has reached out to the various community leaders in Kajuru, including officials of the Adara Nation, to ascertain what actually happened. On Sunday, February 10, 2019, the Adara natives residing in Ungwar Barde in Kufana District of Kajuru Local Government Area came under attack by gunmen suspected to be herdsmen.

"The attack lasted from 10pm of Sunday to 4am of Monday February 11, 2019. By the time the merchants of death and destruction were through with their mission, no fewer than 11 lives, including a pregnant woman, were lost. Scores of victims of the attack on Ungwar Barde sustained injuries, with some of them presently receiving treatment at some health facilities in the state capital.

"We have been informed that the attackers, seven of them, were arrested by a team of policemen. Sadly, not a statement was issued by El-Rufai over that gruesome attack on Ungwan Barde."

State Can chairman Rev. John Joseph Hayab said the government should be held responsible in case of any crisis in the state.

"The incidence of raising false alarm by the Kaduna State Government should make Nigerians realise that some of our leaders are also guilty of hate speech themselves and that makes them major actors in the game that have denied us peace and have claimed the lives of our love ones.

"We call on the general public to treat with disregard the press statement from the office of the Kaduna State Governor and to note that should Kaduna State experience any breach of security before, during and after the general elections we shall hold the Kaduna State Government responsible."

"We call on our media to grow above the temptations that water down our trust in them, the media houses must not allow themselves to be bought over but be objective and honest in their reportage," the CAN chairman said.

The indigenous community of the troubled area, Adara Development Association (ADA), said it was faced with deliberate lies allegedly being manufactured by El-Rufai.

Adara people, in their statement titled: "Adara incident: the Facts Behind the Deliberate Lies", said the governor was trying to instigate a crisis in their area.

The statement signed by ADA National Assistant Secretary, Luke Godwin Waziri sauid: "In view of the unfortunate incidents that we are faced with in Adara land and the deliberate lies being manufactured against us as a people by the governor of Kaduna State, Malam Nasir El- Rufai , we deem it necessary to state the facts and correct the official and deliberate lies.

"It has also become necessary to highlight the high handedness and mischievous manner that the governor of Kaduna State has been deploying against us as a people. Not satisfied with a deliberate attempt to balkanise our traditional institution and culture, the governor is currently trying to instigate a crisis in our area.

"On Friday, 15th of February, 2019, on the eve of what would have been our national elections, we watched with shock the governor granting an interview that 66 people were allegedly killed in Kajuru, Kaduna State. The governor went ahead to list the number of villages that were attacked but deliberately excluded Ungwan Barde where our people were killed.  He also gave the gender statistics of those allegedly killed and the tribe of the victims but again mischievously left out the 11 Adara people who were killed.

"He insinuated that the incident happened on the eve of the election. But the truth is that the incident took place between Sunday, 10th February, to Tuesday, 12th February 2019 in Ungwar Barde in Kufana District, where 11 innocent Adara people were earlier killed without any provocation.

"The district head of Kufana wrote an official report to the police about the incident. The member representing Kajuru in the Kaduna State House of Assembly also informed the government about the incident. Even the chairman of the local government, Cafra Caino, was also aware of the incident.  But, to our greatest surprise, the chairman did not take steps to set the records straight when lies were being spread against the people he leads.

"After the incidents, the communities that were affected even came together and started the process of reconciliation amongst themselves. Through all these, nothing was heard from the government, nothing was said by the government and nothing was done.  None of the affected communities was even visited by him.

"We were shell shocked when on Friday the governor issued a statement about killings days after the dust had settled and the people themselves were working to understand the incident in order to find measures to address it.

"To further complicate matters, media houses kept reporting it as 'Breaking News'.  It is really incredulous that the eve of the election was the most appropriate time the governor found to disclose the attacks, give the 'specific number' of those allegedly killed, the ethnic group they belong and the names of the villages affected.  There could never have been a clearer attempt by the governor to instigate crisis than this malicious, insensitive and incendiary strategy.

"The governor did not stop there. He went up on different TV houses and newspapers on the issue as one heralding news – still giving a one-sided version and intermittently spicing it with the word 'reprisal' at a time when he ought to have been putting finishing touches to his candidacy for elections that would have held in hours. It is not hard to see what such theatrics was intended to achieve.

"This completely lends credence to everyone's belief that the governor is seriously working toward instigating a crisis in our land and Kaduna State for his own deadly benefit. But we in Adara land have resolutely decided that no amount of blatant provocation would make us to lose our calm. Our peaceful disposition is legendary and we will continue with that.

"Faced with mounting pressure to prove his allegations of '66 killed', the governor hurriedly visited some few places but ensured that the District head of Kufana, Mr Dauda Titus and the National President of the Adara Development Association, Mr Dio Maisamari, were quickly arrested and locked up for the duration that he visited.  The reasons are just too obvious! The District Head was released only when the governor had concluded his visit while Mr Dio is still being held by the Police.

"We invite the world's attention to the serious and indiscriminate arrest of our people and chiefs. Many of them have been arrested for just no reason and without due process. We call for their immediate release and demand that Governor Nasir El-Rufai desists from making life difficult for our people with his arbitrary, divisive and incendiary use of power.

"We want to place on record before the whole world that El- Rufai is working assiduously to instigate a crisis in Kaduna for his own political gain, and that should crisis break out, local and international observers should know who to hold responsible."

El-Rufai was accompanied to the scene of the attack by Major-General Faruk Yahaya, GOC 1 Division of the Nigerian Army, Air Cmdr. I. Sani of the Nigerian Air Force, Police Commissioner Ahmad Abdurrahman and State Director of DSS, A.I. Koya. The chairman of Kajuru Local Government Area, Cafra Caino, also joined the governor on the visit. The governor condemned the killings.

According to his spokesman Samuel Aruwan, El-Rufai noted that there had been concerted and coordinated efforts by "bigoted busy bodies" to deny or minimise the casualty figures.

Quoting the governor, Aruwan said: "Only irresponsible and insensitive people can recklessly dismiss the deaths of members of a community with whom they have no contact. Private individuals and unelected actors cannot be allowed to reduce weighty matters of state security to the province of their limited networks, inexperienced lenses and narrow agendas."

"Governor El-Rufai during the visit warned the community against reprisals and to shun violence.

"Also, the Commissioner of Police confirmed that some arrests had been made in connection with the incident and that the suspects will be charged to court as soon as investigations are completed. "

"Also, Gen. Yahaya briefed the governor on the recovery of 66 corpses by soldiers in the Maro and Iri axis of Kajuru Local Government Area. The general conducted the governor around the scenes of the crime which were littered with the wreckage of burnt buildings and dead animals." Aruwan said.

Kwara APC running mate takes O Tó Gé to churches

Posted: 18 Feb 2019 12:10 AM PST

Kwara APC
There was a mild drama yesterday when the Kwara State All Progressives Congress (APC) deputy governorship candidate, Kayode Alabi, visited Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) at Gaa Akanbi to appeal for calm following the postponement of the general elections.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), in the early hours of February 16, postponed the presidential and National Assembly elections to February 23.

INEC also shifted the governorship and state assembly elections earlier scheduled for March 2 to March 9.

Alabi, who mounted the pulpit to read the Yoruba version of the Bible, asked the congregation to open to Deuteronomy 3:26 and Number 16:17, both of which contained O Tó Gé.

Making reference to the scripture, he said the slogan was borne out of the myriad of problems confronting the state, such as moribund industries, lack of pipe borne water and deplorable public schools, among others.

Alabi, who also visited other churches in Ilorin, the state capital, called for understanding, harmony and hitch-free elections on the rescheduled dates.

On the sidelines of the visit to churches, Alabi told NAN that Kwara State residents were more resolute to vote the government of their choice.

NAN reports that some of the churches visited include First ECWA, the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) and Cherubim and Seraphim Movement Church.

At the RCCG Mount of Joy Parish, Region 4 headquarters at Sabo-Oke, Pastor Akintunde Abdullahi advised the church members to support the APC candidate.

Abdullahi said: "This is our own; we must support him. I am not a politician, but I love politics. I know we belong to different political parties, but he is our own.

"If I don't support my pastor, who else will I support? If any of you is interested in politics, I will support you. The era of shying away from politics is over."

Pastor Ilesanmi Samuel of CAC Worldwide decried the situation where politicians often sought God's support when seeking elective positions but quickly forgot the vows they made after emerging victorious.

The cleric said God is looking for trusted politicians who would change the face of politics in Kwara and Nigeria, adding that he had always had bitter experiences with politicians.

"Let it be known that God is raising you for the purpose of changing the face of Kwara politics because the people are suffering," Samuel said.

Rev. Babatunde Owojaiye of the First ECWA Church urged the congregants to remain faithful and honest to the people.

AUDIO: Buhari Doesn’t Have The Kind Of Money I Can Steal - Bola Tinubu Declares

Posted: 17 Feb 2019 04:01 PM PST

Asiwaju Bola Tinubu

Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has been captured on audio saying President Muhammadu Buhari doesn't have the kind of money he can steal.

The former Lagos Governor said this in an audio recording of an event that seemed to have taken place on February 14, 2019, during which he addressed a crowd of supporters and told them whoever could mobilise votes would be adequately compensated for their efforts.

He made reference to President Muhammadu Buhari, stating that the latter did not have the kind of money required for "mobilisation" of voters.

He also made reference to the elections in Osun, noting that his efforts on it paid off.

Speaking in Yoruba, he said: "Today is Valentine's Day, the day of love. Today is for the women. They said I must put on this cap and I had to because of you, the women. This is the cap of the children of our mother, the children of Okoro, (and he greets the crowd 'Igbo kwenu!)

"Let's make things snappy because I still have to attend another meeting before I go to Abuja. Those of you that say you come to Bourdillon for mobilisation, it's mobilisation we're doing here. Or don't you understand?

"Definitely, if you know people in your neighbourhood, who are our members, you should be able to call them out. If you're a registered member, go out and vote. Vote and let it be much, and when I see the result, that's when I'll bring out money that is worthwhile for you. Even if your footwear is worn-out, as long as you can deliver on votes, I guarantee that I'll pay you money that will surprise you. May we not lack!

"They said I used my mouth to speak anyhow. However, that rough-handedness paid off in Osun. They claimed that we brought candidates from Lagos to become governors in Osun; people like Aregbesola and Oyetola. If we train your children, and they become experts in their fields, won't we ask them to come home to make things better? How much is your money that I'll embezzle? You can't match my pocket. I told them so, and their traditional rulers were seated. They were even recording the incident and published it. Let me not say something like that again today. However, Buhari doesn't have the kind of money I can steal, neither does he have the money I can collect. He doesn't even have the money for Lagos votes. So, whatever I promise, it's for real and is coming from my pocket. It's not until I go to Alausa before I get money to give you."

Nigeria Decides 2019: Femi Falana Reveals Identity Of Those To Be Blamed For Election Postponement

Posted: 17 Feb 2019 02:38 PM PST

Femi Falana, SAN

Femi Falana SAN, human rights and constitutional lawyer, has said that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has no cogent reason to have postponed the elections originally scheduled for February 16.

Falana said this in a statement released on Sunday.
The human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) stated that there are provisions for which an election can be postponed, but that the reasons stated by INEC was not one of them, Daily Post reports.

INEC moved the general elections to Saturday, February 23, about six hours to the start of the polls yesterday.

Not convinced with the excuse tabled by INEC, Falana said, "Any postponement of elections on account of logistical or operational reasons cannot be justified under the Electoral Act or the Constitution".

He also accused the government and some political parties of playing a part in the postponement of the elections.

Read his full statement below:

"By virtue of section 26 of the Electoral Act, an election may be postponed if a serious breach of peace or violence is likely to occur or on account of a natural disaster or other emergencies.

To prevent any abuse of power the reasons for postponement of any election must be cogent and verifiable.

Furthermore, section 105 of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria provides that if the Federation is at war in which the territory of the country is physically involved and the President considers that it is not practicable to hold elections the national assembly may pass a resolution to postpone the election. And such postponement shall not be more than six months at any one time.

Therefore, any postponement of elections on account of logistical or operational reasons cannot be justified under the Electoral Act or the Constitution.

Since general elections had been postponed on two previous occasions due to lack of adequate preparations the Independent National Electoral Commission ought to have prevented the shifting of the 2019 general election.

Even though all the political parties have blamed INEC for the postponement some of them contributed to the national shame and embarrassment.

Owing to the decision of political leaders to select and impose candidates on their parties in utter violation of section 87 of the Electoral Act many aggrieved candidates rushed to court for legal redress.

Consequently, not less than 600 pre-election cases were filed and are pending in the various courts while not less 40 orders have directed INEC to accept the names of candidates who won the primaries but were shortchanged.

The resort to litigation due to the impunity of majority of political parties contributed to the unwarranted delay in the preparations of INEC for the general elections.

It is interesting to note that both APC and PDP have traded their usual blames over the postponement of the general election by the INEC. But apart from INEC, both parties ought to apologise to Nigerians for their deliberate refusal to implement the far-reaching recommendations of the Electoral Reforms Panels headed by Retired Justice Mohammed Uwais, Sheik Ahmed Lemu and Dr Ken Nnamani which were set up by the Yaradua, Jonathan and Buhari regimes respectively.

Each of the panels had recommended the unbundling of INEC for effective performance. For instance, as INEC lacks the capacity to prosecute electoral offenders an electoral offences commission/ tribunal was recommended for the enforcement of laws to address all forms of electoral offences and consequently stem the incidence of electoral violence.

Even the panels had recommended that the posts of the chairman and other members of the INEC be advertised in order to make them independent of the Executive. But in a bid to sustain the status quo of electoral fraud these recommendations and others have been rejected by the PDP and APC-led Federal Government.

The shameful postponement of the 2019 general election would not have occurred if the Federal Government had unbundled the INEC and ensured the practice of internal democracy in the political parties.

It is public knowledge that both APC and PDP have not committed themselves to electoral reforms. Hence, they have conveniently forgotten that the late President Umaru Yaradua had admitted that the 2007 general election which produced his regime was highly flawed.

Since the system will continue to produce flawed elections all democratic forces should mount sufficient pressure on the Federal Government to implement the recommendations of the aforesaid electoral reform panels, once the 2019 rescheduled elections are concluded.

Meanwhile, INEC which has shifted the general election by 7 days is alleged to have turned round to ban political parties and their candidates from further campaigning for votes.

With respect, INEC has not paid attention to Section 99 of the Electoral Act which provides that the period of campaigning in public by political parties shall end 24 hours before polling day. Since elections have been shifted the period of the campaign has also shifted and will end 24 hours to the new polling day.

Therefore, the limitation of campaign imposed by INEC should be reversed without any delay. Furthermore, INEC should comply with all valid and subsisting court orders with respect to the candidates sponsored by political parties for the general elections. Otherwise, the courts may annul some of the elections conducted by INEC on grounds of exclusion of qualified candidates."
