Why are women feeling the shame and guilt of domestic violence instead of the men perpetrating them?

Posted: 26 Feb 2019 12:12 AM PST

Why are victims of domestic violence ashamed?
While Nigeria's general elections were ongoing on Saturday, February 23 2019, one of the sideshows on Twitter was the news of a certain twitter user who was being pitilessly dragged for beating his girlfriend so badly till her eyelids had blood clots in them.

Following the accusation here, he claimed that his hand had mistakenly fallen on the woamn's face, posted an ill-advised and later-deleted clip of an altercation between him and the girlfriend in question [in the hope of exculpating himself from social media blame?] and later conceded and apologised when the heat became a torrent he apparently could no longer bear.

There's a lot to be said about the whole story - for example, how is Twitter the first place people go to in cases like this when there are authorities such as the police and other interested agencies they should have had first recourse to? And is a public apology on social media enough to let someone off the hook of crimes committed?

But these do not really have much bearing on this piece like the issue of women feeling shameful when they have been assaulted by their partners, people they have [had] romantic relationships with.

In the Twitter drama narrated above, the victim of abuse did not say anything about the beating. It was a third party, presumably a friend, who called out assailant, calling him an abuser and detailing the sequence of events in a thread of allegations.

And even that came a whole month after the incident itself.

Naturally the question is; why wait that long to report the occurrence, and why not by the victim herself? The answer to this is contained in one of the screenshots of a chat she had a with a friend where the victim claimed to have been too "ashamed" to say anything or tell anyone.

Why would victims suffer shame alongside the disrespect and inhumanity of being battered by a partner who should be affectionate to them?

Suffering violence, suffering shame

One would expect women to feel indignant, angry, resentful, bitter, vengeful and other feelings that would typically portray that they've been hard done by. Shame is not something to be typically 'expected' from victims of domestic violence. Yet, it is not uncommon for women to feel this.

One big and obvious reason for this is the prevalent culture of victim blaming and shaming. When women suffer these awful treatments and intend to come out with their stories of abuse, they know from the experience of others that they will hear questions like "why didn't they speak up sooner?", "why didn't they just leave?", and "why didn't they tell anyone?" among others.

Obviously this is simply not right. When it is established that women have been physically abused in relationships, the blame - all of it - is the partner's. It does not matter if the woman ran her mouth or if she was insultive. If it was not done in provable self-defense, it is abuse to hit a woman, or for a woman to hit a man.

In simple language omen cannot bear the undeserved pain of being hit and be made to carry the shame of it as well. All the guilt, shame, punishment of domestic violence belongs to the perpetrator – not the victim.

Abuse is not your fault
Abusive partners and sometimes family, friends and to a large extent social media could make you feel that abuse is your fault, or that you are the reason why your man partner is abusive to you. This is not true at all. Each partner has control over their actions. One partner choosing to be abusive is never the victim's fault.

You don't deserve it
There is nothing anyone could ever do to deserve to be abused. Both partners deserve and should give respect at all times. You don't deserve to be put down or called names, told who you can or can't be friends with, or to be controlled or hurt. In a healthy relationship, each partner should be able to communicate their feelings without resorting to violence or abuse of any kind.

Most Radio Presenters Are Pimps For Celebrities – Movie Producer, Ola Michael

Posted: 25 Feb 2019 11:00 PM PST

Movie Producer, Ola Michael
Ghanaian movie producer, Ola Michael, in a bid to corroborate Snapchat blogger, Fatp*sy's stories about Ghanaian celebrities being prost!tutes, has also disclosed that most radio presenters are p!mps for Ghanaian celebrities, selling them to rich men for money.

Ola Michael also revealed that the person behind the Snapchat account dropping the exposés is a man, not a woman, as it is believed.

The producer released his own narrative. He wrote,

TIME TO LET OUT THE CAT!
TRUTH OR DARE?

I met this girl at zylofon fm for the first time. I watched her speak for hours and I could tell something wasn't right about her. I don't remember exactly what I told her but one thing I remember saying to her was this things she was saying and doing are not new and I know how it would end. She talks more than she listens.

Ladies and gentlemen I have been following the supposed exposé from a faceless but real Snapchat guy bi. He uses female names for his ID. He's releasing a whole lot of stuff about these so called SLAY QUEENS.If you have not been in the business before, you wouldn't understand what's is going on. But unfortunately for me, I understand. When a love-vendor get f***ked in the a$$, he burns everyone. It's the nuisance of the trade.

We have consistently promoted some lazy, empty headed girls on social media and mainstream media, all in the name of showbiz. Yes, it is showbiz! They use these platforms provided them to expand their digital wh0redom marketing. The more we write about them, talk about them, or even insult them, the more clients they get both from within and without.

Let be frank and tell the truth to Ghanaians and the observers around the globe. These ladies are professional prost!tutes, right from some supposed A-List actors to wanna be actors, Rosemond brown kinda Models, and struggling to find place actors like Efia ?d?! They are selling their bodies for money. Most of the guys you revere on radio and TV are p!mps of these ladies. I'm sorry to be blunt!

Their clientele is so widespread; from Ghanaian game boys to politicians , both corrupt and semi corrupt, businessmen- both genuine and non genuine, drvg dealers, conmen et Al. The recent booming and high paying clients are in Dubai. The Dubai spenders prefer to have an#l s£x. They don't do the natural s£x! They want it from the back.

RESULTS PROJECTION: Buhari Well On Course To Win Nigeria’s Presidential Election

Posted: 25 Feb 2019 01:56 PM PST

President Muhammadu Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), is poised to win Nigeria's 2019 presidential election.

According to results seen by Sahara Reporters at 67% results determination status, Buhari has polled more than 11million votes, and the figure will yet rise — with 33% of the results yet to be seen — while Atiku Abubakar, his closest challenger and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has more than 7million votes.

Atiku lost both in Kano and Lagos, the two states with the highest voting population.

At this rate, there is high likelihood that Buhari may defeat Atiku by a margin of more than 2million, but it may not be as high as the 2.6million votes with which Buhari defeated then incumbent Goodluck Jonathan in 2015.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is still announcing the results at its national collation headquarters in Abuja, and is expected to formally declare Buhari re-elected on Tuesday morning.

The PDP, though, has already rejected the result, branding INEC's figures "incorrect and unacceptable to our party".

The results, which are still being collated across the state, showed the former Vice President leading in Oyigbo, Omuma, Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni, Obio/Akpor, Eleme, Andoni, Gokana and Etche LGAs.

The results also showed the candidate of the All Prorgressives Congress (APC) and incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari trailing behind with a lead in Asari-Toru Local Government Area of the state.

The results from 13 other LGAs including Port Harcourt, Ikwerre, Emohua, Degema, Tai and Opobo/Nkoro, are however, yet to be announced.

Others are Okirika, Ogu/Obolo, Khana, Abia/Odua, Ahoada East, Ahoada West, Akoku-Toru and Bonny LGAs

Atiku got a total of 222,045 in the nine LGAs, while Buhari got 71,734 votes.

NAN also reports that the PDP National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, delivered his Andoni LGA to Atiku with 72,330 votes.

The Collation Officer for Andoni, Prof Prince Oghenekaro, while announcing the results, said that Ward 6 of the LGA had no election as election materials were allegedly carted away by hoodlums.

Also, Dr Godwin Ihenacho, a Collation Officer for Etche LGA, said that there was no election in Ward 14 of the area due to hijack of election materials.

The Collation Officer for Obio/Akpor LGA, Prof. Arthur Nwafor, said the result so far was from 13 out of 17 wards.

He added that four wards, 1, 3, 15 and 16, which generated a total of 4,000 votes, were not collated due to security situation in the wards at the time of collation.

The state Returning Officer of INEC, Prof. Aniefiok Essien, however, said that the results from the remaining LGA's would be announced as soon as they arrived.

State Of Affairs In Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District - Akwa Ibom PDP

Posted: 25 Feb 2019 08:41 AM PST

Press statement by the Peoples Democratic Party Akwa Ibom state on the state of affairs in ikot Ekpene Senatorial District

We are in receipt of impeccable intelligence indicating a plan to attack and burn INEC offices in ikot Ekpene Senatorial District and the headquarters in Uyo . This plan we learnt is hatched and sponsored by the out-going senator for ikot Ekpene Senatorial District, Sen. Godswil Akpabio who is hell bent on frustrating the announcement of the collated result of Essien Udim local government area and the final result of the Senatorial District . Before the elections, Senator Akpabio, Obong Nsima Ekere, Ini Okopido and other APC chieftains undertook the regular submission of frivolous petitions against top PDP members to necessitate their arrest by the police. To give fillip to their plan, they facilitated the relocation of AIG Musa Kimo from zone 6 to Uyo, so that immediately any petition from the APC is brought, he will instruct the CP to enforce the arrest of the PDP stalwart accused. Last week, scores of PDP faithfuls were arrested and detained for no justifiable reason, even those with valid injunctions from the court were not spared. Captain Iniobong Ekong, Barr. Akan Affia, Godson Uwah and many other strong PDP members were arrested. Many others who were targeted for arrest few hours to the election escaped by God's grace, people like Senator Bassey Albert, Obong Paul Ekpo, Rt. Hon Onofiok Luke, Engr. Uwem Okoko were on that long list. Having seen the resounding rejection served him by his Senatorial District on the Election Day, Senator Akpabio in company of police and military men stormed INEC offices in the federal constituencies of his Senatorial District in an attempt to bribe the Electoral officers to change results in his favour. Having failed to succeed in that respect, he detained the Electoral Officer for Essien Udim(His LGA) and commenced the falsification of results. When accosted by foreign observers who sought to monitor the collation, his thugs harassed the observers and chased them away.

In the last 24hours, Sen. Akpabio has tried different tricks ranging from calling the PDP collation agents and promising them huge financial inducement, offering bribes to Electoral officers, abduction and detention of electoral officials, use of military intervention and many other conceivable means of defeating the will of the people expressed freely cast through the ballot. Last night, he held a victory party at his residence in Ukana, Essien Udim, where he declared himself the winner of the elections, against the provision of Section 27(2)(e) of the Electoral Act which provides that the Returning officer shall announce the result and declare the winner at the Senatorial Collation center. It is therefore unlawful and illegal for Senator Akpabio to announce himself as the winner. The truth is that collation of results have been done in 9 out of 10 local government areas areas in ikot Ekpene Senatorial District and three out of four of the House of Representatives seats declared by INEC as having been won by the PDP with a wide margin of more that 60,000 votes. The only LGA left is Essien Idim, which INEC is currently working on.

We are hereby appealing that the security operatives should provide adequate security for all the offices, officers and infrastructure of INEC to prevent agents of the Senator Akpabio from making good their threat of destroying lives and property.
We appeal to INEC to remain firm, resolute and unbending in the discharge of their duties. Illegitimate requests must never be acceded to.

Additionally, we call on the Inspector General of police to immediately arrest Senator Godswill Akpabio for conduct likely to breach public peace and violation of section 27(2)(e) of the electoral act. He should be prosecuted immediately so that upon conviction, the provision of Section 123(4) of the electoral act will be activated.

The Inspector General of Police and the entire security apparatuses of government must engender public confidence about their neutrality and must show that no one is above the law. All institutions of state must depart from partisan tendencies as it is a great threat to the sustainability and growth of our democracy.

Thank you all.

Dickson, APC leaders’ trade words on electoral violence, killings

Posted: 25 Feb 2019 06:34 AM PST

Seriake Dickson
Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson, Monday accused leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) of masterminding the killings and other forms of violence that occurred in the state during the Presidential and National Assembly elections.

Briefing journalists in Government House, Yenagoa, Dickson lamented that at least three persons, one in Nembe-Bassambiri and two in Southern Ijaw, were killed with many people across the state sustaining injuries.

The visibly angry governor alleged that security agencies especially troops of the Nigerian Army, colluded with the APC leaders to kill the victims, who were members of the People's Democratic Party (PDP).

He said thugs loyal to APC unleashed mayhem on polling units across the state under the watch of soldiers adding that troops were responsible for the act of terrorism against innocent voters by thugs.

The governor particularly accused a former Governor of the state, Chief Timipre Sylva, a surveillance contractor, a former National Deputy Publicity Secretary, APC, Yekini Nabena and the Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Prof. Nelson Brambaifa, of leading assaults against voters in the state.

He alleged that Sylva and the surveillance contractor in connivance with soldiers unleashed pre-election violence on Nembe-Bassambiri by shooting into the community throughout Friday night.

He said the shooting continued in the morning while thugs loyal to them abducted INEC officials and took them to a hotel where they thumb-printed all the ballot papers meant for the seven wards in Nembe-Bassambiri.

He said INEC in the state had done nothing about it despite text messages sent to the Resident Electoral Commissioner by one of the INEC officials abducted by the thugs.

The governor alleged that the APC was making efforts to transmit "the unlawful results" to the INEC and appealed to the commission to reject the overtures since according to him no elections held in Nembe-Bassambiri.

He asked the people of Nembe-Bassambiri to rise against the development and promised to lead a protest against attempts to subvert and undermine the will of the people.

The governor further alleged that Brambaifa came with about 50 soldiers to disrupt elections in Agbere, adding that they deliberately scattered all the votes when they saw they were losing.

Dickson claimed that Nabena was arrested with arms at Odi by soldiers but was later released after security agencies received orders from above.

He said: "I am telling the people of Bassambiri not to accept this and they have my support. Bassambiri has to be freed. I am calling on the leaders of Bassambiri not to allow this nonsense to persist in that proud land. For us we will not accept this.

"I have had cause to issue several statements on this. I will lead demonstrations and protests aimed at vindicating the democratic rights of the people of Bassambiri. I shall do so. I call on the REC to drop his lilly-liver and wear the garb of an electoral umpire in the state.

"Because if you allow Sylva to take several electoral materials, lock the place down by force of illegal arms with soldiers and others conniving with them, then what you are telling politicians is that votes are not important".

He said there were efforts by thugs loyal to the APC to storm the Sagbama collation centre and manipulate the results in his local government areas.

On the killings, he promised to set up a judicial commission of enquiries to look into the roles played by leaders and security agencies in the elections.

But he added: "A preliminary report that I have indicated that they were killed by soldiers. They were not killed by thugs. The chieftain of our party who was in the house waiting for the results to be collated and announced but an APC leader who had access to soldiers went and pointed at them and they just shot them.

"I believe that the full circumstances will be unravelled. But I feel very sad. Nobody should die in an election. If you defeat my candidate, I will even congratulate you. We are not enemies to kill ourselves. It's so sad."

The governor, however, praised the electoral process in Brass and Ekeremor, saying for the first time in the history of the state, the people were allowed to cast their votes in a peaceful atmosphere.

In their reactions, Brambaifa and Nabena denied the allegations against them by the governor saying they were never in breach of the electoral process.

Nabena said he was never arrested with arms and asked the governor and other persons making the allegations to present the weapons found on him by security agents.

I’ll wait for INEC’s final results, Says Buhari

Posted: 25 Feb 2019 06:23 AM PST

Muhammadu Buhari
President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday said he doesn't believe in rumour and would rather wait for the result that will be declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Various results on the social media have trailed the Presidential and National Assembly elections held across the country last Saturday.

But the President, on arrival at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja on Monday, said that he will wait for the final result declaration by INEC.

Buhari had left Abuja on Friday for Daura, Katsina State, in order to exercise his civic responsibility.

Asked his reaction to what he was hearing from across the country, he said "I don't want to depend on rumours, but we will rather wait for INEC to announce the results."

On his message to Nigerians as they await the release of results, Buhari said "Well l hope that Nigerians will appreciate that it was this government which made sure that they were allowed in security and peace to cast their votes for whichever party and candidates they wanted."

The sorting, counting and collation of the Presidential and National Assembly elections results are still on going across the country.

IYC seeks cancellation of results in Bayelsa

Posted: 25 Feb 2019 06:15 AM PST

The Ijaw Youth Council ( IYC ) Worldwide has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to cancel results in some parts of Bayelsa State.

The Ijaw group told INEC that the Ijaws in Nembe-Bassambiri, Nembe Local Government Area were denied their rights to vote alleging that electoral materials meant for the area were hijacked by thugs in connivance with security agencies.

The Secretary-General, IYC, Alfred Kemepado, said violence was unleashed on the Ijaw communities adding that an official of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was kidnapped by the thugs, who frustrated voting in the area.

Describing the general scenario as monumental shame, Kemepado said it was shocking that some results emerged from Nembe- Bassambiri without voting and use of card readers.

He wondered why violence was the order of the day in an era election could only be adjudged free and fair through the use of PVCs and card readers.

He said: "It is shocking in this era of card readers and personal voter's cards (PVCs), where individuals are encouraged to vote for candidates of their choice that people can still primitively resort to terrorising and carting away both personnel and materials.

"We earlier warned that security agencies, especially the Nigerian Military were colluding with political thugs to perpetuate this fraud and jungle politics in the Niger Delta. We also said that they should be called to order by the Chief of Army staff".

Kemepado alleged that the military aided political thugs to steal electoral materials in Bassambiri and to destroy already cast votes in Agbere and other Ijaw territories like Abonema in Rivers State.

He said: We call on INEC to cancel the election in these areas with obvious malpractice and reschedule elections that will ensure free and fair process only.

"Furthermore, whoever, including the Nigerian Military that has unjustly killed our citizens in the guise of processing elections would be brought to justice nationally and internationally.

'We have reports of the murder of innocent citizens in the Southern Ijaw area of Bayelsa State and some parts of Rivers State to deepen their intimidation of Ijaw people.

"The intimidation of Ijaw people has never worked from the times of the colonial masters and will never work no matter how it comes".
