2019: Tambuwal, Wamakko Take Campaigns To Home Fronts

Posted: 05 Feb 2019 10:25 AM PST

Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal

Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal and his predecessor,.Senator Aliyu Wamakko this afternoon took their campaigns to their home fronts in Tambuwal and Wamakko local governments respectively.

The duo will be expected to woo support of their assumed strong holds even as they are said to have challenges to overcome.

Although, on lookers have pitched Governor Tambuwal of not been on the same page with the political magnates in Tambuwal town who overwhelmingly aligned with opposition PDP for obvious misgivings by the seating governor.

Prominent are a former Commissioner,  Alhaji Umaru Nagwari Tambuwal and the APC Southern  senatorial District candidate, Abubajar Shehu Tambuwal. The duos are key political and opinion leaders in Tambuwal own.

On the other hand, Wamakko's anticipated challenge in his town seems to be mild as he had been in touch with his people.

However, only time will tell as the duo push for more support to deliver their respective party across all levels in the state.

Are Internet Shutdowns The New Norm In Africa?? a question you will like to find answer to

Posted: 05 Feb 2019 10:14 AM PST

Internet In Africa
In this day and age, access to the internet is widely considered a human right. For many, it is the main way they conduct business, communicate and experience the world they live in. However, this right has been infringed upon in Africa multiple times in the last year and this consequential trend shows no signs of slowing down.

Robert Besseling, an analyst at risk-assessment firm EXX Africa, told Voice of America that there have been shutdowns in five African countries in the first three weeks of 2019 alone. In 2018, there was a total of 21 across the continent.

In Cameroon last year, the government suspended services after Anglophone teachers, lawyers and students went on strike over alleged historical biases in favour of Francophones. The suspension lasted from January to March, almost one hundred days, making it the longest period of Internet disruption by an African government.

We saw the Zimbabwean government restrict online – and social media services specifically – to curb the organisation of violent protests triggered by skyrocketing fuel prices. ISPs Econet and TelOne blocked access to the internet entirely in accordance with a government mandate and even VPNs couldn't be used as a workaround. Econet could only message its customers, saying that it was "beyond our reasonable control."

Internet was cut in the Democratic Republic of Congo during a tumultuous presidential election to avoid an "uprising" as tensions rose while the results were pending. Opposition parties accused authorities of trying to curb activism against suspect numbers. Citizens figured out ways to tap into services across the Congo River in the Republic of Congo, but service was finally restored 20 days after the election.

Again to counter a protest, Sudan blocked social media amid growing calls for its longtime president, Omar al-Bashir, to step down. It wasn't as severe as the internet blackout imposed in 2013, but the restricted access severely impacted the exchange of information. Access to Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp was only possible via a virtual private network (VPN).

During an attempted coup, Gabon shut off its services, effectively denying citizens reliable information on the insurrection.

The main reasoning behind these shutdowns is that they will help stop the incitement of hate and violence, but many have argued that it only hinders the exchange of information, creating an even better environment for human rights abuses and injustice to thrive.

Not only that, but these shutdowns aren't cheap. "The Economic Impact of Disruptions to Internet Connectivity", a report compiled by Deloitte and funded by GNI member Facebook, measures the cost of these shutdowns.

The report estimates that a country with average connectivity could lose at least 1.9% of its daily GDP for each day all Internet services are shut down. For a country with average to medium level connectivity, the loss is estimated at 1% of daily GDP, and for an average to low connectivity country, the loss is estimated at 0.4% of daily GDP.

Based on that, the ongoing Internet shutdown in Ethiopia, a low-connectivity country with a population of 94 million and a per capita GDP of USD 505, is costing its economy just under half-a-million USD a day in lost GDP.

Despite these consequences, shutdowns keep gaining traction as a way to quell organised violence. Is it the new norm in Africa? And if so, what impact will it have on the countries affected in the long term?

South Africans still neglecting online safety

Posted: 05 Feb 2019 09:51 AM PST

Online Security
In light of Safer Internet Day which is observed around the globe today, 05 February, YouGov has released the results of a study which shows that many internet users in South Africa are still not doing enough to safeguard themselves online.

Commissioned by Google and conducted amongst 1005 internet users in the country, the study shows that 53% of respondents have received phishing emails from people imitating legitimate sources in order to fraudulently gain access to their personal information, including passwords and bank details. Another whopping 24% of South African internet users admit to having fallen victim to online scams in which they ended up making an upfront payment for a product or service that did not exist.

Surprisingly, despite the fact that more than a quarter (28%) of respondents have had someone gain unauthorised access to their social media and/or email accounts, and that 65% of South Africans are concerned about protecting their financial information (like banking details) online; a few South African internet users actually take advantage of readily-available services and safeguards:

43% of South Africans use the same password for most or all of their online services
Only 34% of South Africans use 2-step verification for all their online accounts
A total of 11% of South Africans have no recovery phone number or email address for their online accounts
21% of South Africans update their online passwords less frequently than once every 6 months
26% of South Africans never use tools like Google Security Check-Up to review their security settings
"This is concerning", says Fortune Mgwili-Sibanda who heads up Public Policy and Government Relations at Google South Africa. "This research shows that South Africans are well aware of the dangers that present themselves online, yet so few are proactively using tools available to protect them from online predators."

Internet safety covers a range of areas that go even beyond this study, such as child safety on the internet and the prevention of internet addiction.

"In 2018, we launched Family Link – software that enables parents to supervise their children's' use of the internet. We also launched our Digital Wellbeing app that helps users understand their online habits so that technology can help them rather than hinder them in their daily lives," continues Mgwili-Sibanda. "This Safer Internet Day, we want to encourage South Africans to take their online safety more seriously and educate themselves on the tools available out there, such as the Google Security Check-Up and other free tools such as 2 step verification."

2019 Presidency: See What Buhari allegedly plans to do to Obasanjo, Jonathan if re-elected

Posted: 05 Feb 2019 09:27 AM PST

President Muhammadu Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari will be probing former Presidents, Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, if elected in the coming February 16 presidential election, Daily Post reports.

A highly placed official in the Federal Government, who confided in DAILY POST on the grounds of anonymity disclosed that the president will go after Obasanjo because his administration wasted the sum of $16bn on power which yielded little or no results all through his eight years in power.

He also disclosed that Buhari government would ensure that Jonathan's connection to the slush funds allegedly misappropriated by the former National Security Adviser, NSA, Col. Sambo Dasuki would be considered, after which the former President would be prosecuted.

The source explained that the recent tone of the president on anti-corruption, "tells you about what to expect if elected."

According to the source: "Buhari will unleash his venom if elected on February 16. People like Obasanjo will be probed for wasting $16bn on power.

"Despite wasting such huge funds on power, you will discover that Nigeria has remained in perpetual darkness. I can assure you that he won't be spared if Baba is elected.

"Look at Jonathan, are you trying to tell me that he was not aware of the billions Dasuki was sharing during the last election? When Buhari returns, he will ensure that Jonathan's link is established and well prosecuted. At least, you can hear from the horse's mouth at different rallies that all those linked to corruption will not be spared.

"Some of Jonathan's aides who were linked to Dasuki funds have linked the former president to this funds so we will look into it and ensure that no loosed end is left untied. Buhari's second term will be tough, mark my words; it will be tough especially for Obasanjo and Jonathan.

"Buhari was seen as been silent in his first tenure but the silent support of both Jonathan and Obasanjo to remove him from office will re-awake him.

2019 poll: PDP urges security agencies to be neutral

Posted: 05 Feb 2019 09:04 AM PST

Uche  Secondus
The National Chairman of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Uche Secondus has admonished the nation's security agencies to safeguard the unity of the country by being neutral in all their operations regarding the general elections.

The party chair said the PDP was in possession of credible intelligence that some security operatives were being hired by the governing All Progressives Congress (APC) to connive with some officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to manipulate the election in their favour.

Secondus, who addressed a crowd of party supporters in Gusau, Zamfara State on Monday at the PDP presidential rally, said that there were still some good patriotic operatives who do their jobs professionally.

The party chairman advised the security operatives to be guided by the country's constitution, saying that any bias roles from them in the coming elections could plunge the country into major crisis.

Prince Secondus said the endorsement of the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar by the Afenifere, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the Northern Elders Forum, the Pan Niger Delta Forum and leaders of the Middle Belt Elders Forum, showed clearly where the country was heading to in the upcoming elections.
"By that endorsement, which APC is refusing to accept as coming from the people, Nigerians of all divides have spoken that the APC administration can no longer continue", the party chair added.

Secondus assured that Atiku will not fail the nation, as, according to him, he has been tested and tried and found to be well equipped for the challenges of the country.

He added that a PDP presidency will restore all the collapsed industries in Zamfara and other states, with a view to giving jobs to the people and ensuring adequate security.

Also speaking at the rally, Atiku told the crowd that he would give them the airport they requested for, adding however that what they needed most was peace and security, which he promised to address with all seriousness.

Atiku also assured the people that he would rebuild the Malori Dam and to also reactivate industrial and agricultural activities in the state.

Prominent PDP chieftains at the rally included former Governors of Kano, Niger and Kogi States, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Babangida Aliyu and Idris Wada respectively.

A former National Security Adviser (NSA), General Mohammad Alyiu Gusau (rtd) also attended the rally.

Justice Onnoghen: Supreme Court Dismiss Saraki’s Case Against Buhari

Posted: 05 Feb 2019 08:59 AM PST

Dr.Bukola Saraki
The Supreme Court has struck out the suit filed by the leadership of the Senate, challenging President Muhammadu Buhari's powers to suspend the Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Justice Walter Onnoghen.

The suit was dismissed by a seven-man panel of Justices of the apex court, led by Justice Rhodes Bode-Vivour.

DAILY POST reported yesterday that the Senate President, Bukola Saraki withdrew the matter from the court following the National Judicial Council's intervention.

The Senate had in the suit marked SC.76/2019, invoked the original jurisdiction of the Supreme Court, demanding that the court determine whether Buhari has the constitutional powers to unilaterally suspend the CJN.

When the suit came up on Tuesday, counsel to the Senate, Paul Erokoro, SAN, applied to withdraw it.

The lawyer told the apex court panel that his client had earlier filed a notice of discontinuance, though he did not adduce any reasons behind the decision.

Federal Government lawyer, Mrs. Maimuna Lami Shiro, said President Buhari and the AGF were not opposed to the request to abort hearing on the suit.

Consequently, Justice Bode-Vivour struck out the matter.

NLC may endorse Wabba, others for second term

Posted: 05 Feb 2019 08:28 AM PST

Ayuba Wabba
Nigerian workers under the auspices Nigeria Labour Congress will hold its National delegates conference in Tuesday at the International Conference Centre in Abuja to review the state of workers in the last four years and map out plans for the future.

The two conferences, according to inside sources is expected to affirm the current leadership of the union led by Comrade Ayuba Wabba for a second term.

The tenure of the current leadership expires this month, having been elected in 2015.

The source told The Nation that every member of National Administrative Council, except one of the deputy Presidents, Comrade Kiri Mohammed will be returned unopposed to lead the Congress for another four years.

Comrade Kiri Mohammed who was elected Deputy President when he was President of Nigeria Civil Service Union has since retired from service, making him ineligible to re-contest.

In his place, The Nation was informed that one of the four Vice Chairmen and President of the Construction Workers Union, Comrade Amaechi Asughuna may be asked to take his place.

The opening ceremony of the conference with the theme towards a decade of activism for the promotion of Labour unity, national rebirth and development are expected to hold on Tuesday.

Governorship candidate of the Labour party in Kwara state and NEC member of the Congress, Comrade Issa Aremu while congratulating the Congress said with as many as 12 delegates' conferences in the past 40 years, which had produced as many as 12 labour's democratically elected Administrative Councils, "it was self-evident that Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has come of age in democratic processes and experiences." According to him given the record of achievements of NLC "Nigeria Republic has a lot to learn from the labour movement in holding elections and serving the people in poverty eradication".

Aremu said it was also remarkable because NLC had recorded great achievements such as the new minimum wage of N30,000. The labour leader also hailed the emergence of Comrade Ayuba Wabba as the first African unionist to lead adding the "Union truly makes Nigerian workers Strong".

"This historic conference gives all delegates the opportunity to face up to the challenges of the Congress's growth and unity. The Conference must usher in a united labour movement in actions in defence of workers' rights, the revival of industries and deepening of the democratic process in Nigeria.

"In particular, there should be robust resolutions among which should be the reinvention of the Labour Party to serve as a platform for the working class to struggle for political power within the democratic dispensation."

PDP gives INEC 24 hours to publish list of ad hoc staff

Posted: 05 Feb 2019 08:09 AM PST

Peoples Democratic Party

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to within 24 hours publish the list of all officials and ad hoc staff that would play any form of role in the forthcoming general elections at all levels.

The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Mr Kola Ologbondiyan, who made the call at a press conference on Monday in Abuja said that the list should be published for verification by stakeholders.

Ologbondiyan said that any delay or refusal by INEC to publish the list within 48 hours would be a clear acceptance that the commission had been compromised by the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He accused the INEC leadership of plotting to rig the forthcoming general elections for President Muhammadu Buhari and the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He also called on the international community to place the INEC Chairman, Directors and Commissioners in INEC responsible for this election on its watch list in the conduct of the elections.

Ologbondiyan however, urged all members of the PDP, and all meaning Nigerians to vote for the party and protect their votes.

Reacting to the allegations, the Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman, Mr Rotimi Oyekanmi, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that less than two weeks to the general elections, the commission could not afford to be distracted by baseless allegations.

Oyekanmi said that the Commission was not a political party and would not allow itself to be dragged into unnecessary controversies at a time like this.

"The INEC has been conducting general elections since the past 20 years.

"During this time, especially since 2010 and particularly from 2015, the commission has introduced many innovations to improve the electoral system.

"One of such innovations is to ensure that no member of any political party is engaged to participate in the conduct of elections.

"I, therefore, call on any political party or individuals with information on how the Commission plans to or has engaged members of any political party as ad-hoc staff for the upcoming general elections to make such information public and mention specific names.

"It is not enough to make wild allegations. It is incumbent upon those who make such allegations to also provide the proof," Oyekanmi said.

He assured that INEC would conduct free, fair and credible general elections, and for which it needed the support of all Nigerians.

Oke urges Ondo, Ekiti residents to troop out for Buhari

Posted: 05 Feb 2019 07:57 AM PST

Olusola Oke
The Southwest Coordinator of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council, Chief Olusola Oke, yesterday urged residents of Ondo and Ekiti states to come out massively to receive President Muhammadu Buhari and other APC leaders today.

Oke said there would be no APC without the contributions of the Southwest.

Addressing reporters in Akure, the Ondo State capital, to herald the President's visit, the campaign coordinator said the region in the past three and a half years gained more than it did in the 16 years of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
He said: "The Southwest is the engine room of this government and APC as a party. President Buhari has done more for us than the 16 years of the PDP. We have been a major beneficiary of the change mantra and ready for the Next Level.

"Rehabilitation and expansion of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, construction of 158-kilometre Lagos-Ibadan standard gauge rail, dualisation of Oyo-Ogbomosho road, Lagos-Ore-Benin road and other major infrastructure are being centred in this region by President Buhari.

"Major ministries are being managed by our people from the Southwest. You don't change a winning formula. We want to retain a working formula."

Oke said the recent endorsement by some groups, like Ohaneze N'digbo, Afenifere, among others, would not affect the chances of President Buhari in the February 16 election.

He said: "Afenifere and other groups are not political parties that can muster votes in the coming elections."

‘No room for APC in Kwara South’

Posted: 05 Feb 2019 07:37 AM PST

A group, the 'Kwara South G70,' has said it will give 70,000 votes to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during the elections.

The group directed its members, numbering about 700, to garner 10,000 votes from each of the seven local government areas of Kwara South Senatorial District.

The Coordinator, Kwara South G70, Salahudeen Lukman, spoke in Ajase-Ipo, Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, during the inauguration group, the 'Kwara South G70,' has said it will give 70,000 votes to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during the elections. of G70 neighbour-to-neighbour campaign volunteers.

Lukman said the team was specifically set up to mobilise support for the re-election of Senator Rafiu Adebayo Ibrahim, who he said, had surpassed the achievements of his predecessors in Kwara South.

He said the group had taken stock of the representation of the legislator in the upper chamber of the National Assembly with a verdict that failure to return him in the February 16, 2019 election may retard the progress already recorded.

Lukman said young people deemed it fit to canvass votes for Dr Ibrahim because his representation had changed the political narrative of the area.

He appealed to the people of Kwara South not to be swayed by what he described as the "campaign of calumny" of the opposition, saying the incumbent senator deserved re-election with his track record of performance.

He said Senator Ibrahim, who chairs the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and other Financial Institutions, sponsored some bills on the floor of the Senate, one of which attracted national honour and made Nigeria a ranking nation in the enabling business environment.

Lukman pointed out that the legislator had also facilitated projects to the seven local government areas of Kwara South, adding he had since endeared himself into the warmth embrace of the people.

He said: "As an independent youth platform, who is more concerned about the betterment of Kwara, we assembled here to kick start our neighbour-to-neighbour campaign for Senator Rafiu Ibrahim, who is a serving senator of Kwara South, and he is contesting again for the second term.

"This is a decision we unanimously took independently for obvious reasons, which are not far-fetched. For almost 20 years that democracy has returned to Nigeria, Kwara South has equally elected representatives to the National Assembly. But the one we elected in 2015, he is one of the best we have ever had.

"For the fact that we are also a living witness to what has happened in the past and what has happened recently, we also foresee what good could happen in the future, that is why we decided to join Let's Do More Together Team.

Lukman added: "We are inaugurating this neighbour-to-neighbour campaign to go to households, every neighbour, to let them know what Senator Rafiu Ibrahim has achieved in three and a half years at the upper chamber. For the fact that we have witnessed two or three people already in the chamber before now, who have no impact, we see a reason why we must strive to ensure that for the progress of Kwara State and Kwara South, in particular, to continue steadily the way it has started, Senator Rafiu Ibrahim must be re-elected.

"That is why we the young people of Kwara South have taken it upon ourselves. Let us go out there to sensitise our people. They should not be blindfolded by the campaign of calumny that is going around."

He urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) not to precipitate controversy on the standard bearer of the PDP for Kwara South Senatorial District

We will return PDP to power, says Ekweremadu

Posted: 05 Feb 2019 07:11 AM PST

Atiku Campaign
Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu has said that the people of Southeast will vote for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during the general elections.

He said the sense of belonging given to the Southeast and infrastructural facilities in the region provided by the PDP will make the people vote for the party.

Ekweremadu addressed a rally at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu, during the flag-off of the Enugu State presidential campaign last weekend.

He said: "Today, we have assembled to showcase our love for the PDP. And we have reasons to do so.

"PDP is the party that gave our people the President of Senate of this country. They gave us Deputy President of the Senate. They gave us the National Chairman and Secretary of the PDP. They gave us the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). They gave us the Minister of Finance. They gave us the Chief of Army Staff for the time since after the civil war. They gave us the Inspector General of Police. In fact, they gave us a sense of belonging.

"But, since the PDP lost power at the centre, we lost all these. Now, we are going back to power. Now, we believe that with our own son as the Vice President and our sister as the First Lady, we will return to power. So, this is down to our people".

Ekweremadu said the PDP started the Second Niger Bridge, adding that the PDP also gave the Southeast "access to the international community through the international airport, just to name but a few".

He added: "So, the PDP has done so much for us, but the good news is that the party is even ready to do more for us.

"When we go to the polls on February 16, we will vote Atiku Abubabar as President and Mr. Peter Obi as his Vice President and return all the PDP candidates to the National Assembly. We will do the same on March 2 and return our Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, and all our House of Assembly candidates."

Abiodun: I will bring new lease of life to Ogun

Posted: 05 Feb 2019 06:58 AM PST

Dapo Abiodun Campaign In Ogun State
Ogun State All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate Prince Dapo Abiodun has been on the campaign tour of Ijebu-Ode, Ijebu-East, Ijebu North, Remo North, Sagamu and Abeokuta local governments. At the rallies, he promised to bring a new lease of life to the Gateway State, if elected, Group Political Editor EMMANUEL OLADESU reports.

HOW far can Prince Dapo Abiodun, governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State, can go?

The election is less than two weeks. He has been up and doing at rallies. His campaign train has rolled into various wards across the three senatorial districts.

Exciting confidence, he told a crowd of supporters in Abeokuta, the state capital, that he will succeed Governor Ibikunle Amosun. "I will bring a new lease of life to the people of Ogun State" he added.

By and large, he poised to make a difference among the packs. He has admonished party faithful and supporters to be wary of the antics of those who are using the good name of the party to deceive them for their selfish ambition.

Abiodun said some selfish political office seekers may have used the good name of the APC to get into positions  and performed below expectations. But, he said that should not be used as yardsticks to generalise that all politicians are birds of the same feathers.

While addressing APC members and supporters at Isiwo, in Ijebu-Ode Local Government Area, as part of his ward-to-ward tour of  the 20 local governments, he promised that a new dawn is beckoning.

He said: "Don't be deceived by some politicians that have gone out on the prowl, knocking at your doors to bring out your Permanent Voter's Cards (PVCs) to take the numbers on them and then, offer you money.

"We can't be in the same party and we will be making the same mistakes. No! It is not possible. These sets of politicians are not real members of the APC. APC is the party. Broom is the symbol of our party. In all the elections, make sure you cast your votes for the APC.

"By the grace of God and with your support, Buhari isn't in another party but in the APC. Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo is our son and we should use our votes to promote and make him great, so that he (Osinbajo) can know that his kinsmen are solidly behind him.

"I want to use this occasion to reiterate my commitment to ensure that I bring my vast experience in the private sector to bear on governance, if I emerge as the governor of the state."

However, responding to the requests of the monarch of the ancient town, Oba Sikiru Salisu, and the Council of Baales, Abiodun promised to rehabilitate the 15 kilometre road stretching from Ijebu-Ode through Yemoji/Odo-Ladenusi/Oko-Ako/Odo-Lofa and to Isiwo; the construct a culvert linking the various communities; renovate of both public primary and secondary schools; energise the transformers and provide pipe-borne water.

Former APC Ogun East Senatorial district chairman, Alhaji Folorusho Elias, said Abiodun as part of his campaign tour would afford him an on-the-spot assessment of the deplorable road conditions and other amenities that are begging for attention in the communities.

He said the monarch, his subjects and the entire inhabitants have decided to speak with one voice and cast their votes for Abiodun.

He added: "When you get into office help us reconstruct our road from Yemoji through Agboju. Also, help us reconstruct the only culvert linking our various communities. Our unemployed youths are there and we want your government to empower them. We have untapped large expanse of land, if you will need them to set up businesses for our youths."

Party stalwarts at the rally include the Director-General (DG), Dapo Abiodun Campaign Organisation (DACO), Prince Segun Adesegun, Sen. Gbenga Obadara, former Ogun SUBEB Chairman, Mr. Mufutau Ajibola, Chief Bode Mustapha, former Ogun Sports Commissioner, Mr. Afolabi Afuape, Ganiyu Hamzat, Ijebu-Ode House of Assembly candidate, Aare Kemi Oduwole and Pa Olu Agemo.

Abiodun took his campaign train to Remo North Local Government Area and made the palace of Alaye Ode-Remo his first port of call.

While being received by the Alaye, Oba Amindu Osho, Abiodun reiterated his commitment to give priority attention to the development of rural communities through the reconstruction of new roads to link urban centres.

He said although it is important to have flyovers in Abeokuta, rural roads should not be abandoned, just because of the development of the state capital.

The APC candidate said: "Fixing rural roads would ease movement of farm produce and dwellers from one location to another. Also, rural roads connecting adjoining states will be given priority attentions.

"It is also evident that, many communities in the state are without pipe-borne water and regular power supply. We will look into these challenges and attend to them.

"It is common knowledge that, while some governors, having spent eight years in office, have got nothing to show as the electoral promises. But I want to assure you that ours will be different. We will make good our electoral promises."

To Abiodun, the election is for the greater growth and development of the state. He urged the people to cast their votes en-mass for the APC.

He said: "We are not leaving the APC for another party, because we know it is a great party that can bring dividends of democracy to the people.

"We are going to return power to the local governments, so that council chairmen can perform their statutory duties effectively. Also, we will build multi-healthcare centres in each local government area.

"Those using the portraits of President Buhari as their presidential candidate are not honest to themselves, because they do not belong to our party, the APC."

Oba Osho said with unfolding events that are in favour of Abiodun, the people are ready to deploy all the resources at their disposal to ensure that they give their support to the APC governorship candidate in the forthcoming general elections.

The monarch said: "Dapo Abiodun is a glorious son of Remoland and he needs our prayers and we will support them.

"He is the governorship candidate we want to see at the Okemosan governor's office, come May 29, 2019. I have no doubt in my mind, that Abiodun will win. Because having Engineer Segun Adesegun, a former Deputy Governor, a tested and trusted person, as his Director-General (DG) Campaign Organisation, victory is sure for Dapo Abiodun."

Abiodun promised to develop on education and assured parents and students in Ogun state-owned tertiary institutions that there will be no strike.

He gave this promise, while addressing students of Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago-Iwoye, who accosted him at Ifelodun Constituency, in Ijebu North Local Government Area (Ogun East).

He said: "I want to assure you of my utmost priority for an improvement in the education standard in the State. I would maintain a frequent connection with the students in a bid to listen to their plights through regular town hall meetings, at least, twice every year of my administration.

"I sincerely appreciate the ways and manners at which you have articulated your points and I am assuring you, that as a son of teachers, I will ensure that we formulate a policy that will address all the lingering crises in the education sector."

The state-owned tertiary institutions have been enmeshed in crises due to non-payment of salaries and other welfare packages.

The APC candidate stressed that education remains the greatest legacy any government could give his people.

The President of the Students Union Government (SUG) of the institution, Comrade Akinbo Afolabi Olamide (Kempes), urged Abiodun to formulate a student-friendly educational policy when he emerged.

He said: "Our in-coming governor, we have been looking for this opportunity to interact with you and see what you have for us before we declare our support for you.

"The educational standard of this State has deteriorated and the school fees are becoming unbearable to the common man. I want to appeal to you, to address this menace as soon as you get into office, because I believe you are the next governor of Ogun State.

"We, students, always suffer alot when government refuses to give a listening ear to students", said Akinbo.

Abiodun assured the residents of the host community (Ago-Iwoye) of speedy completion of the abandoned Ilishan-Ago-Iwoye road upon assumption of office as governor.

He said the abandoned road would be rehabilitated as soon as he gets into office. He gave the assurance, while addressing Baales, Market women and men, artisans, members of Community Development Committee (CDC), including Arewa and Igbo communities, in the Ifelodun constituency of Ago-Iwoye.

He said: "I am in this race to bring a new dawn to the state. I am leaving my comfort zone (the private sector) to make my own impact. I am not someone who will promise and fail you. I will ensure that even development is given to every part of Ogun state."

Also, the campaign team paid a royal visit to the Ebumawe of Ago-Iwoye, Oba Abdul Rasaq Adenugba.

However, while on the campaign tour of Ijebu East, Abiodun's bid received another boost when the Owu people within the local government declared their support for his candidature.

In demonstration of their support, the people of the ancient community treated Abiodun to a rousing reception.

The Atunluse of Owu Ijebu Kingdom, Otunba Femi Adewunmi, explained that his people were throwing their weight behind Abiodun because of his vast experience in the private sector that has earned him to be a successful businessman who they are confident would take the state to enviable heights.

He said: "Our in-coming governor, I want to gladly tell you that the people of Owu Ijebu Kingdom are solidly behind you. We would persuade and also influence all our kinsmen across the State to do same. This is because we have seen you as an experienced businessman who has been successful in his businesses and it won't be difficult for you to take this state to greater heights."

The monarch added: "We are assuring you of our maximum support with our resources to ensure you emerge victorious in this local government and the state at large. We are urging you to make sure you fulfill most of your electoral promises and give a new lease of life to the people of Ijebuland and Ogun State at large.

Abiodun, who was excited by the huge crowd, assured the people of good governance and fair distribution of government projects.

He said: "I want to sincerely appreciate you for this colorful reception. It is an indication that God is truly with us in this project. I also want to assure you, that your support will not be taking for granted and we will ensure that this is reciprocated through provisions of good governance that will enhance good lives for both urban and rural dwellers in the State."

The campaign train moved round the local government from Ijebu Imushin to Ebute Odo, Ogbere and Itele before the grand finale at Ijebu-Ife. The people of the local government area were enthusiastic.

The tour of Sagamu Local Government Area, was a home call for Abiodun.

While in the ancient town, party faithful and residents out to show their gratitude for Abiodun's choice as candidate.

While making Express Junction Unit, Sagamu his first port of call, Abiodun charged members of the National Union Road Transport Workers (NURTW) to reject offers to sell their PVCs, but rather use them to elect credible and competent political office seekers in the forthcoming general elections. The same message re-echoed when he met members of the National Automobile Technicians Association (NATA) and Processing Woods Marketers Association of Nigeria (PWMAN).

He gave the charge in Sagamu, in Sagamu Local Government Area, on Tuesday, while on a ward-to-ward campaign tour of the ancient town.

The Ogun State APC governorship candidate who was accompanied by his running mate, Mrs. Noimot Salako-Oyedele, Sen. Gbenga Kaka, Director-General (DG) of the campaign organisation, Segun Adesegun, Remo North/Ikenne/Sagamu Federal Constituency candidate, Otunba (Mrs.) Yetunde Onanuga, former Ogun State Commissioner for Sports, Mr. Afolabi Afuape, Ganiyu Hamzat, among others, while on a campaign tour round the ancient town, underscored the importance of the PVCs to electing credible and competent political office seekers and urged the leadership of the various Associations to persuade their members to use the cards to vote wisely.

Addressing members of the Processing Woods Marketers Associations of Nigeria (PWMAN) at the state secretariat, Express Junction, Sagamu, Abiodun told the leadership of the Association, led by Chief Samson Dosumu, that it is the APC that can provide the capable leadership at the Federal, governorship, National and State House of Assembly levels to the myriad of problems confronting the state.

He, however, warned the people to be wary of the antics of some politicians that have nothing in stock to offer them.

Abiodun said: "As the general elections are approaching, I want you to take cognizance of the fact that your PVC is your voting power. Don't sell it.

"I am assuring you that APC is the party that can deliver the dividends of democracy. We have an array of capable and competent candidates into various elective offices and I want to admonish you to cast your votes for them. I want to assure you, that they will not disappoint you.

"Our administration is going to keep all electoral promises when we get into the office and I want you to count on me".

While rounding off his campaign tour of the town at the Palace of Akarigbo, Sagamu, the APC governorship candidate appealed to the party faithful and supporters to cast their votes for the President Muhammadu Buhari/Prof Yemi Osinbajo (SAN) joint ticket in the February 16 elections.

"The Vice-President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo (SAN) is our son. He is from Ikenne-Remo and we should all support the joint ticket re-election of Buhari/Osinbajo and National Assembly candidates with our votes.

"When it is the turn of the governorship and State House of Assembly elections slated for March 2, cast your votes for me, Dapo Abiodun, your son, for the governorship seat and all the State House of Assembly candidates", Abiodun appealed."

A day earlier, the APC flag bearer visited Sotunbo, Ita-Sanni and Ogijo. He had a brief stop-over at Mosinmi, where he met with members Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) who pledged their support for his emergence as the next governor of the state and the re-election of Buhari/Osinbajo presidential joint ticket.

Aminu waziri Tambuwa
Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal and his predecessor,.Senator Aliyu Wamakko this afternoon took campaigns to their home fronts in Tambuwal and Wamakko local governments respectively.

The duo will be expected to woo the support of their assumed strongholds even as they are said to have challenges to overcome.

Although, onlookers have pitched Governor Tambuwal of not been on the same page with the political magnates in Tambuwal town who overwhelmingly aligned with opposition PDP for obvious misgivings by the seating governor.

Prominent is a former Commissioner,  Alhaji Umaru Nagwari Tambuwal and the APC Southern Senatorial District candidate, Abubakar Shehu Tambuwal. The duos are key political and opinion leaders in Tambuwal own.

On the other hand, Wamakko's anticipated challenge in his town seems to be mild as he had been in touch with his people.

However, only time will tell as the duo push for more support to deliver their respective party across all levels in the state.

2023: Igbo may lose a second time – Okorocha

Posted: 05 Feb 2019 06:32 AM PST

Rochas Okorocha
Imo State governor, Rochas Okorocha has warned that the Igbo may yet lose out in national polity if they fail to apply tact and political wisdom.

Okorocha who recalled the fate of the Ndigbo since after the civil war lamented that they are about making similar mistakes that put Ndigbo in a disadvantaged position in the Nigerian project.

According to him, "The saying that there was no victor and no vanquished after the civil war is just a mere way to create unity for the country, otherwise the Igbo were the vanquished, ever since the Igbo has fared like the defeated but the most painful aspect is that Ndigbo are about to lose again".

The Imo governor disclosed that the recent political upheaval in his state were sponsored by forces outside the state, using politicians from the state to pull him down ahead 2023.
He stated that the calculation is that if he is allowed to continue gathering momentum he will give a good fight for the Igbo Presidency, adding that Ndigbo will be at the losing end if he is politically alienated.

He said "There is more to the noise you are hearing about the governorship election in Imo, it is not about Uche Nwosu, it is about a plot to stop Okorocha by all means, otherwise why will Adams Oshiomhole and Rotimi Amaechi be interested in who governs Imo. The calculation is that if Uche Nwosu becomes governor and I go to the Senate, I will be a strong force by 2023. The most annoying fact is that they are using our people to pursue that agenda".

The governor further gave reasons why he wants to go to the Senate, adding that "I want to go to Senate to remain politically relevant until 2023 and also to represent Ndigbo and the Nigerian masses".

Obanikoro: No record of cash collected from Dasuki for Fayose

Posted: 05 Feb 2019 08:11 AM PST

Musiliu Obanikoro  and  Ayodele Fayose
The Federal High Court in Lagos yesterday heard that there is no record of the N1.2 billion and $5 million which former Minister of State for Defence  Musiliu Obanikoro allegedly delivered to former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose.

Testifying in Fayose's trial for money laundering before Justice Mojisola Olatoregun, the former minister, the fifth prosecution witness, said he did not sign for the money he received from former National Security Adviser (NSA) Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd).

"I did not sign any record at the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) for the money that I collected," he said.

Obanikoro was cross-examined by defence lawyer Kanu Agabi (SAN) (for Fayose) and Olalekan Ojo (SAN) (for Fayose's company and co-accused Spotless Limited).

The former minister agreed that he was also under investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and that he was eventually made to return N200 million of the money he received from Dasuki.

"I was being investigated over funds disbursed through the ONSA. I was kept in EFCC custody for 21 days. I reluctantly returned the N200 million cash. Some money was seized from an account related to me," Obanikoro said.

The witness explained how he came about using the account of Sylvan Mcnamara Limited to receive money from ONSA.

He said Dasuki's successor wrote a petition against him and the company, alleging that they collected funds for which no contract was executed.

"It was the NSA (Dasuki) that requested me to furnish the account. The request to furnish the account was made orally," he said.

Obanikoro said Dasuki told him that the account was for transferring funds meant for the security of Lagos.

"The account was for securing Lagos. I sourced the account from Taiwo Kareem; it remained his property. We came about the company (Sylvan Mcnamara) because they made a presentation to the ONSA and was found to have the capacity for securing Lagos," he said.

Asked if Sylvan Mcnamara was a security company, Obanikoro said he would not know until he saw the firm's articles of incorporation.

"That's the purpose it was used for (securing Lagos). The decision to qualify Sylvan Mcnamara was that of the NSA. I introduced the company to NSA and the approval was given," he said.

Asked what the NSA had in mind when he asked him to source for the account, Obanikoro said: "The NSA wanted to protect Lagos. I deserve a medal of honour for the protection of Lagos, which we did successfully."

On why the account appeared to be shrouded in secrecy, he said: "Clandestine security operations don't work the way an average person wants it to work."

Obanikoro admitted that some funds were transferred from the account to Rehoboth Homes, such as N74 million on May 31, 2014.

He explained that Rehoboth Homes "must have been one of the vehicles to get the dollar content to Fayose".

Other sums, such as N5 million, were also transferred to unknown persons from the account on at least three different times.

Agabi said: "The reason they hide the identities of the recipients is because their job is evil."

Obanikoro responded: "I am not an evildoer, sir. When a job is for society's good, it cannot be characterised as evil. You do not keep records for some of these transactions."

The witness said some of the funds were transferred while he was sourcing for dollars to deliver to Fayose.

He said he did not bother about checking out the companies or individuals that got the funds, such as Capital Field, which got N167.5 million.

"When you're sourcing for forex, what you look out for is for a credible source, not the name of the company," he said.

Obanikoro added that the NSA never asked him at any time to render an account.

According to him, he would not have taken the assignment if he was not satisfied that it was legitimate.

"And those who brought you under suspicion were acting in bad faith," Agabi said.

"Yes," Obanikoro responded.

The former minister agreed that he had no right to disburse the funds for other purposes.

He said he did not supply to EFCC the call log of his conversations with Fayose.

Asked what his mission in Ekiti State was, Obanikoro paused for a while, before saying: "I'm trying to restrain myself from saying things that will further damage my relationship with him (Fayose). I was in Ado-Ekiti (the state capital) in furtherance of his governorship bid. It's very painful for me to give evidence against him, no doubt about that."

When Ojo asked: "You were in Ekiti as a leader of the PDP?" Obanikoro said: "Correct."

Fayose is on trial for allegedly receiving and keeping N1.2 billion and $5 million reportedly stolen from ONSA, contrary to the Money Laundering Act.

The former governor had pleaded not guilty when he was arraigned on an 11-count charge last October 22.

EFCC said Fayose and Biodun Agbele, who is facing a different charge, allegedly took possession of N1,219,000,000 on June 17, 2014, to fund the former governor's 2014 campaign.

The commission said Fayose "reasonably ought to have known" that the money "formed part of the proceeds of an unlawful act, to wit: criminal breach of trust/stealing."

The EFCC said Fayose, on the same day, received a cash payment of $5 million from Obanikoro without going through a financial institution, the sum having exceeded the amount authorised by law.

The anti-graft agency listed Obanikoro as one of 22 witnesses to testify in the trial, which continues today.

"For all the brothers who are planning to marry if you do not believe that a man and woman are equal then don't bother to marry. If you are looking for a woman to serve and worship you, don't marry an educated woman. If you are insecure and too jealous, don't marry a woman who is beautiful.

"But if you are looking a woman who will give and raise beautiful children with you, take you to the next level, support you in times of need, marry a beautiful woman who is hardworking and educated and has a mind of her own. If you don't have the right tools and the right mindset to sustain a marriage, you can learn but nor carry person daughter punish am o," he said.

Okey Bakassi has a message for busybodies on social media

Okey Bakassi a message for people who we like to term busybodies who tend to drop unnecessary comments on social media post. The veteran comedian made his frustrations known on his Instagram page on Tuesday, September 11, 2018, where he posted a video. According to him, it is really unwarranted for anyone to make comments on social media especially if they have no knowledge of the topic.

"It has become very clear to me why people fail exams is not common sense if you don't understand something you ask questions. Even in African culture those days when things are too confusing they ask the oracle to even find the answer. So why rush to click the reply button on someone's post on social media when you don't understand the point. You reply and just talk nonsense, off point.

"Something wen nor concern the post you will just go and reply. If you read a post and move on, something go happen to you? I don't even understand, some people nor dey even borrow sense wetin you nor understand, ask questions, don't go to the public square and express your stupidity," he concluded.
