Posted: 07 Feb 2019 11:30 PM PST

Tonto Dikeh
Tonto Dikeh isn't having any of the changes made on Instagram as she has called them over their latest actions.

The movie star made her frustrations known on her Instagram page on Thursday, February 7, 2019. In her post, it's not up to the social media platform to make decisions on her behalf as she also revealed how she has lived for her fans and comments on the page.

"Plus I was 10person shy away from making 3.9following as at yesterday but today that has changed drastically!! Gimme back my followers, if others wldnt say I will (WE LIVE FOR OUR FOLLOWING) Instagram has become such a huge part of My life(And yours too but I know you will prefer to argue with your elders), I live for My comments and my Likes and Everything that comes with it...

"Sometimes when times fall apart in my life, All I do is pray and come to Instagram to stay happy with different varieties of Talents and stupidity!! I learn a lot here!! Instagram has become a culture and we live for the culture!! BUT WE MOST NEVER BE SLAVES TO THE CULTURE!! So in this digital culture, I belong to, Our/MY Followings, likes & comment is all I live for and it kills me to have that messed with..😬😬😬😬😬😬😬 #DIGITALLIFE #REALLIFE #STAYREALTOYOURSELF #ILOST40FOLLOWERS #YOU? @INSTAGRAM," she captioned the post.

Has the Nigerian music industry gone to sleep after Detty December?

Posted: 07 Feb 2019 11:00 PM PST

Nigerian music industry gone to sleep after Detty December?
It is the start of the year and despite the release of a couple of albums, some argue that the Nigerian music industry appears to be on break.

In line with the model adopted by major labels and artists, the fourth quarter of the year is the harvest period for musicians, hence it was no surprise to witness the flurry of activities, releases and concerts that hit the music space almost on a daily basis in the last quarter of 2018.

The yuletide period presents one of the busiest in the life of the entertainment scene which translates to more shows and increased visibility especially if you are among the fortunate few classified as an A-list artist or you are able to score a hit record in the year under consideration.

And that is why the likes of Teni, Zlatan and Victor AD were some of the most featured names on concert bills during the period.

So in anticipation of Detty December, we had the likes of Peruzzi, Waje, Funbi all feel 'pressured' to release a body of work even if the timing may have suggested that they held back on their projects.

But as the calendar opened to reveal the year 2019 and we all wished our friends and families a 'Happy New Year', the likes of Burna Boy missed a number of shows he had been announced to perform with images of him having a good time in Ghana surfacing across social media.

Wizkid, who is one of the major content provider for blogs, either with his constant releases or rumoured relationships also announced that he was going on a break till March.

The biggest names were on holiday and it seemed they took the heartbeat along with them.

As a writer who seeks new content on a daily basis, it has become interesting watching bloggers turn every tweet into a story, creating opinion pieces out of every subjective smiley and viral video crafted into a subject of long drawn discussions.

Music releases since the start of the year compared to the last quarter of 2018 has practically been cut to half and this was amplified in a discussion with few colleagues who complained about ''slow news period,''

But has the music industry gone to sleep or are we just greedy and have created an unfair imagination based on how fast we now consume content?

Has the Industry gone to sleep since the start of the year?

At the tail end of the past year, Nigerian artists were BUSY, even upcoming artists ensured that my emails were filled every other day and proved a struggle when I had to compile my Friday playlist, providing the dilemma of choosing 10 songs out of over 100 emails received during the week.

Not so these days and if that is a justification of the argument brought forward, then maybe they do have a case.

But if the industry have adopted the Nigerian culture of 'spending carefully after the expenses of the festive season', then the 'black sheep' of the music scene, its rap community, however, failed to get the memo.

The likes of Show Dem Camp released the fourth installment of their ''Clone Wars'' series on the first day of the new year, which is a really solid body of work and got the rap fans excited.

There have also been the controversial and very polarizing ''Moral Instruction'' by Falz and the LAMB Cypher that became an instant trending topic online.

Added to this, a number of pop stars have also contributed projects as we have seen the likes of newlyweds Adekunle Gold and Simi not only release their joint single, 'Promise', but the latter also out with her first official single for the year.

Burna Boy has also shared the visuals to his collaboration with Zlatan which continues to gather steam, while Reekado Banks has tested the waters of life as a CEO with the release of 'Yawa.'

Let's not also forget American rapper Casanova, who sneaked into the country late last year to shoot the video for his song '2 AM' which features Davido and was released at the start of the year.

Even though the video scenes shot in Nigeria did a disservice and failed in adequately appropriating life as it happens on the street of Shitta, Surulere, Lagos, a neighbourhood where I stayed for close to two decades and can count the number of times I actually saw men walking around the streets with a hyena on one hand.

It still added to one of the talking points that 2019 has offered us already.

But perhaps the biggest moment so far in the year has to be Davido selling out the O2 Arena which irrespective of the various takes that have come in its aftermath remains a really huge deal, not just for the artist but the industry in a rippling manner.

So what happens next?

The argument again gains form when you see a lot of trends surrounding Wizkid that have gone viral despite his 'absence' from the scene or see the discussions surrounding the recent video of popular UK based OAP Shopsy Doo, who erroneously ascribes the inspiration of a number of Nigerian artists.

Opinions like that on a serious day should not even be given a second thought.
But to be fair, although the pace of things presently can surely be quicker, it is not at snail speed.

There is also the uncertainty surrounding the coming elections, a number of artists are struggling to decide if this is the best time to release their songs or just wait till the tension of the elections fades away, while some are just unsure of how strong their content is to maintain relevance for a larger part of the year.

If truth be told though, a really good record or album defies time and season, as long as it comes with a gripping story.

As the last two years have proven, some big artists have capitalized on the lesser volume of music in circulation at these times to score major hits with Davido's 'If' in February 2017 and Burna Boy's ''Outside'' album which had the hit anthem 'Ye' and Wizkid's 'Soco' all released in the first two months going ahead to become the biggest releases in their respective years.

Like they say though, it is usually darkest before the dawn, and projections show that things are expected to get real busier in the coming weeks.

Valentine's day beckons and love themed songs are expected to multiply, new albums are being completed with some already announced, visuals have already been shot and collaborations are being discussed.

The industry will again be a hub of activities and daily intriguing discussions but for now, enjoy this 'spell,' especially if the return of the top names in the game brings more impactful records that will elevate the standards of the music from the past year.

It is not clear why the account was deleted or if it was intentionally done but we can assure you that if you search for the media personality's handle on Instagram, you won't find it. All you will be able to find are proxy accounts which aren't operated by him.

If you visit his Twitter page also, you'd discover that the last time he tweeted was on Tuesday, February 5, 2019. This is not the first time Daddy Freeze will be getting involved in Instagram account debacle.

Recall that in 2017, his Instagram account was hacked and after a few days after, he got the page back.

Daddy Freeze's Instagram account hacked

Daddy Freeze had his Instagram account hacked back in 2017. A few days after, he retrieved the page only to get it hacked again. The on-air-personality revealed it, Friday, November 3, 2017, on his backup Instagram account.

"Account has been hacked again. Once again we arrive at this backup account" said the veteran media personality.

On Wednesday, November 1, 2017, Freeze announced he had gotten his Instagram account back. He also insinuated that pastors were behind the hacking of his account.

"Instead of pastors to debunk my stance on tithing with the Bible, they are busy hacking accounts. How Christlike. #FreeTheSheeple" he tweeted on Sunday, October 29, 2017.

Freeze is known for bashing pastors who live off the tithe of their members. His rants against organized religion have become a recurring topic accompanied by the hashtag #freethesheeple.

1,000 Pastors Storm Abuja To Endorse 'God's Anointed' Buhari

Posted: 07 Feb 2019 04:54 PM PST

1000 Pastors

1,000 clerics of the Christian faith stormed Abuja on Thursday for the grand finale of a rally to endorse President Muhammadu Buhari.

The clerics claim Buhari "is anointed to lead the country for eight years, and as such, should be given the necessary support for him to fulfil the prophecy".

They gathered at the Unity Fountain, Abuja, under the auspices of the National Inter-Faith and Religious Organizations for Peace (NIFROP).

They urged Nigerians not to disrupt the flow of God's blessing to the land, but support Buhari's reelection bid, so he could "continue running the errand God has sent him".

1000 Pastors
Speaking at the rally, Bishop Sunday Garuba, National President of NIFROP, said: "Before NIFROP announced today's rally sometime last week, we had been led by the spirit to hold forty days of fasting and prayer. In the course of this exercise, undertaken on behalf of the nation, it was revealed to us that President Buhari is God's anointed to lead Nigeria to greater heights.

"As you can see, we are more than 1,000 clerics across faiths and denominations. We are apolitical and only delivered this message concerning President Buhari for it what our maker has collectively instructed us to do and we cannot do otherwise, lest we attract wrath unto ourselves.

"The unison of 1,000 clerics of diverse faiths is something that should prick the interest of Nigerians. But it is not a phenomenon for which we should waste time seeking answers. The leadership style of President Buhari as defender of all faiths, ordained to save our religions, is the source of the newfound cohesion that has toned down the tendency for religion to be the source of strife among communities. The naysayers may argue it but Nigeria is on the way to recording fewer and fewer instances of sectarian strife until the larger population of Nigeria will enjoy the kind of cordial relations we have at NIFROP.

"Fortunately, this godly touch is manifesting in other facets of our national life. The corruption that used to be the trademark of Nigeria is now being recognized as an abomination to our creator, something that has been made possible by President Buhari. We are aware that there are those now seeking to return Nigeria to Egypt, back to the days when corruption and theft of public funds was the order of the day.

"We stand on the revelation given to us by God to declare that as He decreed, so shall it be. We on this note appeal to the electorate to ward off evil from Nigeria by aligning with God's will by voting President Buhari to continue with the work that has been entrusted to him.

"We are aware that the opposition has been making false claims to present themselves as the ones destined to take Nigeria to a greater height and that they can liberate Nigerians but we know this for what it is. Lies of the devil! They are known to the Bible as it is stated in 2 Peter 2:19 that 'They promise (Nigerians) them freedom, but they themselves are slaves of corruption. For whatever overcomes a person, to that he is enslaved'. Nigerians must therefore take heed lest they fall the lying tongue that is intent on misleading them to reject God's choice for them."

FAYOSE’S N2.2BN FRAUD TRIAL: Judge Vows To Jail Obanikoro If…

Posted: 07 Feb 2019 04:38 PM PST

Musiliu Obanikoro

Justice Mojisola Olatoregun, who is presiding over the N2.2 billion fraud trial of the former governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, has threatened to imprison former Minister of State for Defense, Musiliu Obanikoro.

The threat followed Obanikoro's, who is a star witness in the trial, failure to appear in court, a development that stalled the matter on Thursday.

The prosecuting counsel for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), had explained to the judge that Obanikoro had been hospitalised.

He presented to the court a medical report from an Ikoyi hospital, stating that Obanikoro was unwell.

But the judge, suspicious of the claim said it had better be genuine or the hospital and the doctor that issued it risked the loss of their licenses, if the court verified the report and it was not genuine.

Before adjourning the case till March 18, Justice Olatoregun warned that Obanikoro must mandatorily come to court or risked being committed to prison for three months so that he can be coming to court "in Black Maria."

She added, "He must present himself before the court on the next adjourned date or be compelled to do so."

Obanikoro is testifying against Fayose, in the alleged N2.2 billion fraud EFCC claimed he fraudulently received from the office of the former National Security Adviser (NSA), Col. Sambo Dasuki, in June 2014.

Obanikoro had when cross examined by defence counsel last Tuesday said he was surprised the money meant for secret security operations by the office of the former NSA was tagged "illicit".

Court Sentences Chairman Of NURTW To Death By Hanging

Posted: 07 Feb 2019 04:27 PM PST

The Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) Boundary/Ayetoro unit in Lagos identified as Saheed Arogundade will die by hanging for killing a police officer.

The fate of Saheed was decided by Justice Olabisi Akinlade of the Lagos State High Court, on Wednesday who convicted him after he was found guilty of conspiracy and murder of the officer, Gbenga Oladipupo.

He was charged alongside five others identified as Mustapha Layeni, Adebayo Abdullahi, Seyi Pabiekun, Sikiru Rufai and Yusuf Arogundade on two counts of conspiracy and murder.

Police report, says the deceased was killed by Saheed and his gang on April 10, 2010, around 8am at the Gbara junction in the Ayetoro area of Ajegunle, Lagos, while Gbenga was on his way to visit his mother on Olayinka Street in the Ayetoro area.

Sources say Saheed and cohorts decided to take the life of the policeman who encouraged the operation of tricycles in the area- a move Saheed and his gang members reckon will reduce the income coming into the coffers of the NURTW.

Recounting the incident in court, the second prosecution witness, Ismaila Lukman who was the motorcycle rider conveying Gbenga at the time of the murder said the victim was dragged down from the motorcycle by his assailants.

Lukman said, "The deceased had called me for a ride to his mother's house when four men approached us and dragged him down.

"One of them, Saheed, brought out a knife and stabbed him in the back. I ran off to seek help from other motorcyclists, but when I returned, I saw the other three men hitting the deceased with their fists.

"One of them, Saheed, brought out a knife and stabbed him in the back. I ran off to seek help from other motorcyclists, but when I returned, I saw the other three men hitting the deceased with their fists.

"I couldn't see the faces of the other men clearly because I was gazing at Saheed, who stabbed the victim. When I got close to the deceased, I realised that he had been badly stabbed all over his body and was bleeding profusely."

In her judgement, Justice Olabisi Akinlade held that the prosecution was not able to prove its case against the other defendants noting that the evidence of the sixth prosecution witness could not be used to convict the second to the sixth defendants.

She said, "The PW6 was not directly at the scene of crime but was standing in front of his house and the object that he described as being used by the assailants on the deceased was different from the weapon described by the pathologist.

"The PW6 claimed that it was a machete used in stabbing the deceased; so, I hereby rule that the PW6 is not a reliable witness. The only evidence the court will rely on is that of the PW2, whose evidence was cogent and convincing.

"The evidence of the PW6 is not sufficient to convict the defendants; the court believes he was not being truthful. The police did not conduct a serious investigation to determine if the fifth and sixth defendants were at the scene of the crime.

"I hereby acquit and discharge the second to the sixth defendants in respect of the charges."

However, she held that the prosecution proved beyond reasonable doubt proved  that Saheed killed the officer.

She said, "The prosecution has proved beyond reasonable doubt that the first defendant killed Gbenga Oladipupo. The first defendant did not act alone, but since the PW2 did not recognise the second to the sixth defendants, they are acquitted of the two counts.

"The prosecution has been able to prove beyond reasonable doubt the ingredients of conspiracy and murder against the first defendant; therefore, I pronounce that the first defendant is guilty as charged.

"I hereby pronounce the sentence of the court upon you, Saheed Arogundade, that you will be hanged in the neck until you are dead. May God have mercy on your soul."

ASUU Strike: Union Calls Off Strike, Lecturers Gets Marching Order To Resume Friday

Posted: 07 Feb 2019 03:41 PM PST

Academic Staff Union of Universities
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), on Thursday agreed to suspend their strike, which has lasted for three months.

This comes after ASUU signed all agreements with the Federal Government, following a conciliatory meeting in Abuja.

Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, represented the Federal Government, while the lecturers were represented by the union's president, Biodun Ogunyemi.

According to Ngige, both parties unanimously resolved the eight contentious issues that had prolonged the strike.

Addressing reporters at the end of the meeting, Ogunyemi said: "On Sunday, November 4, 2018, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) resumed its strike action, which was conditionally suspended on 14th September, 2017.

"The action of 2017 was suspended following the signing of a memorandum of action (MoA) in which the federal government of Nigeria (FGN) promised to address the contentious issues within a timeline that was to end in October 2017.

"While announcing the suspension of the nationwide action, however, our union made it categorically clear that ASUU will not hesitate to review its position should government renege on the signed Memorandum of Action.

"Predictably, Government implemented the MoA in the breach, thereby forcing ASUU to resume the suspended strike action. Comrades and compatriots, as we have always argued, the last thing ASUU members love doing is to cause disruption in smooth intellectual engagements with colleagues, friends and students right on our university

campuses. This has nothing to do with the dubious advertorial of non-disruption of academic calendar by proprietors and administrators of some cash-and-carry universities and other self-styled enemies of ASUU.

"Rather, it is about deep-seated pains members of the Union undergo to prevent strike actions and the equally painful consequences strike situations bring to all who are genuinely averse to the mercantile disposition to university education.

ASUU's official Twitter handle also confirmed that lecturers are to resume on Friday (tommorow).

"The NEC has decided that the STRIKE HAS BEEN SUSPENDED.

"Academic activities resume tomorrow," the union quoted its president as saying in a tweet.

JUST IN: Five Killed, Gov’s Convoy Attacked At Buhari’s Rally In Taraba

Posted: 07 Feb 2019 03:06 PM PST

President Buhari's rally in Taraba

Five persons are feared dead in Jalingo, the Taraba State capital, during the rally of President Muhammadu Buhari of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Thousands of APC members converged on the Jolly Nyame Stadium in Jalingo on Thursday.

However, trouble began as hoodlums attacked the convoy of the Governor, unleashing mayhem on the Deputy Governor's car, as well as that of the state Commissioner of Police and a Special Adviser.

Bala Dan Abu, Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to Darius Ishaku, Governor of Taraba State, confirmed the incident when he addressed reporters on Thursday, Sahara Reporters stated.

He said: "The Deputy Governor's car and several other cars in the convoy, including that of the Commissioner of Police and a Special Adviser to the Governor, were damaged.

"The thugs, most of whom were imported from neighbouring states to create the false impression that APC enjoys a large following in the state, came heavily armed.

"They carried guns, cutlasses and sticks, which they displayed openly and in the full glare of security agents who merely looked the other way. They were given cover by the security agencies who fired gunshots to scare away those who may dare to confront them.

"What happened today is a big contrast to the PDP presidential flag-off of February 5 in Jalingo, which attracted a large crowd, but recorded no incident of crisis and deaths. Residents of Wukari are still licking the wounds of the APC violent visitation of January 29, during which PDP posters and bill boards were torn and a member of the PDP killed.

"The Taraba State government will no longer fold its arms while innocent people are being killed and maimed."

Meanwhile, two persons were also said to have been feared dead as a result of overcrowding at the stadium.

They were said to have been rushed to the hospital in ambulances during the rally.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the campaign was led by the state Chairman of the party, Chief Dan Orbih.

Addressing the electorate at various points, Orbih said the party decided to bring the campaign close to the people so that they could know the party's candidates vying for various positions and vote for them.

He noted that as business people who drove the economy, it would have been impossible for them to abandon their businesses and attend any campaign.

"That is why we decided to bring our campaign to you in your various business places,'' he said.

The chairman who described PDP candidates across the state as very sellable urged the electorate to vote for them.

He said doing so would enable them to join hands with the party's Presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, and get the country working again when voted in on Feb 16.

Orbih noted that the party, when voted into power, would ensure a positive impact in the key sectors of the national economy.

The party chairman stressed that PDP would be fair to all as it would put in place a government of national unity.

He advised them to ensure that their votes counted by defending them and resisting any form of intimidation during the elections.

Obasanjo insults Nigerians on Atiku choice: General Alani Akinrinade

Posted: 07 Feb 2019 06:08 AM PST

Olusegun  Obasanjo
Former chief of army staff and Afenifere leader, General Alani Akinrinade has described as "an insult to our collective intelligence" former president Olusegun Obasanjo's endorsement of Atiku Abubakar as his choice in next week's election.

Akinrinade who took out a page in the Punch newspaper on Thursday to advertise his condemnation of Obasanjo's political choice advised Nigerians not to trust Obasanjo's sense of judgment.

"I am warning Nigerians not to fall prey to Obasanjo's antics again.  Remember the saying – "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me".  How many times has Obasanjo fooled Nigerians?", Akinrinade said.

"Some of us who knew him in the military and were privileged to see him operate during the civil war know if there is one thing Obasanjo is not blessed with, it is a good sense of judgment.

"Nigeria unnecessarily lost thousands of soldiers because of his poor judgment at the war front. But for the paucity of arms, ammunition and food, the Biafrans would have turned the tide against the Nigerian Army.  Alabi Isama has done justice to this topic in his book – The Tragedy of Victory – so one need not repeat.

"Take a look at history through the clandestine manoeuvres in 1979, he foisted on Nigeria a reluctant Shehu Shagari at the expense of a cerebral Obafemi Awolowo or Nnamdi Azikiwe.  After his second coming, he so manipulated the electoral system such that he fraudulently installed an unhealthy Umaru Yar'Adua as president alongside another reluctant character in the person of Goodluck Jonathan as the deputy.  He denied every other interested member of his party while employing all sort of machinations including threat and blackmail.

"Then came 2015, he told Nigerians Muhammadu Buhari is the best man for the job.  As he has done to every presidential candidate he installed or supported, a few years down the line, he says Buhari is unfit for the job again.

"What do you say to a man who once gave a damaging testimonial against an employee now coming back to tell you to follow the same employee as the CEO of your organisation?  What do you say to a man who once said: "with what I know of Atiku, if I support him to be president of Nigeria, God will not forgive me"?

"What do you say to a man who once gave a damaging testimonial against an employee now coming back to tell you to follow the same employee as the CEO of your organisation?  What do you say to a man who once said: "with what I know of Atiku, if I support him to be president of Nigeria, God will not forgive me"? What do you say of a man who once tore his party card in the open glare but is now promoting the same party?  What do you say of a man who said he was going to create a "third force", fooled some impressionable characters to buy into such idea and later left them in the lurch to return to his vomit?  The Bible says something about such people – "A double-minded man is unstable in all his ways" – James 1:8.

"Obasanjo is not a man whose judgement can be trusted. Period! I am warning Nigerians not to fall prey to Obasanjo's antics again.  Remember the saying – "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me".  How many times has Obasanjo fooled Nigerians?

"But I don't blame him. I blame the Nigerian media who have continued to give him undeserved attention, thereby misusing their agenda-setting function. The Nigerian media appear to have forgotten they are indeed the fourth estate of the realm. They are gatekeepers.  They owe Nigerians the responsibility of keeping this irritable man where he belongs – waste-bin of history.  Like his daughter – Iyabo – reminded him in her letter, Nigeria does not belong to him. He should allow Nigerians to choose who they want and stop goading the citizenry for his own selfish interests."

Globacom to introduce new data analytics tools

Posted: 07 Feb 2019 05:52 AM PST

Globacom has announced plans to introduce new data analytics tools to capture subscribers' real time experience.
Mike Adenuga
According to Sanjib Roy, Globacom's Group Technical Director, Globacom has extensively invested in network upgrades, including swapping of legacy facilities. Roy said the company is poised to have its best year ever in terms of quality of service, data speed and capacity expansion.
Sanjib Roy said the last ten months have witnessed the landing of about 26 freight aircraft from around the world, bringing tons of network equipment into the country for Globacom.

He said the equipment helped Globacom to build a brand-new network with superior quality and higher capacity. "Activation is looking up, traffic into the network is going up and consumption is up," he told.

"A new E-band microwave radio technology has been deployed, resulting in an increase in backhaul bandwidth to 1.5 – 2gb per link. More than 1800 BTS and an equal number of NodeBs have been swapped in Lagos, Oyo, Ogun and Rivers states. Also, supplied and deployed are 1000 microwaves to modernise the transmission network to IP. The capacity of Glo 1, Globacom's submarine cable, has been upgraded to 300G, giving huge bandwidth for mobile and Enterprise business," Roy added.

"All these have been possible because of quick supply and effective deployment. We have also deployed more than 2000 new generators and 6000 new batteries to boost customer experience. Work is on-going on more than 1000km of fibre routes where road construction had affected fibre cabling," he stated.

Roy said deployment of high wattage Radio Remote Units (RRU) for 3G services and multi-sector antenna had been concluded for better 3G indoor coverage, high-speed data download, signal quality and network coverage.

Globacom is also upgrading the capacity of existing microwave links, converting TDM links to IP for 2G and 3G, and is deploying high capacity microwave back up links to increase data backhaul capacity and protect traffic against fibre cut.

"We are using a scientific and methodical way of rolling out new sites based on feedback from regions on where the sites are needed to address customer complaints. We are also planning to rollout LTE in 1800 band this year in major cities to increase our 4G LTE penetration and allow higher handset adoption in order to enable the masses to harness the future. New enterprise products that will help SMEs and businesses in rural areas to grow in a digital environment are also in the works. New sites will also be built in rural areas to bridge the digital divide between cities and villages," said Sanjib Roy.

He said Globacom will execute a conceptual launch of 5G in 700mhz band for Internet of Things application this year.

Facebook creates jobs with content review centre in Kenya

Posted: 07 Feb 2019 05:20 AM PST

Social Network Platform
Social network platform, Facebook, has announced plans to open a content review centre in Nairobi, Kenya.

The company will work together with Samasource one of the largest digital employers in East Africa in creating employment as well.

Facebook's first content review centre in Sub-Saharan Africa will employ approximately 100 reviewers by the end of the year, who will support a number of languages, including Somali, Oromo, Swahili and Hausa.

The move comes after the company, was put under scrutiny for data and privacy violation.

Fazdai Madzingira, Public Policy Associate for content said: "Over the years, we have made significant investments globally, and locally in ensuring that people see the content they want to see, and are aware of what is and isn't allowed on the platform. That's why we have a set of Community Standards and last year published the more detailed internal guidelines around these rules. We want Facebook to be a place where people can express themselves and freely discuss different points of view, whilst ensuring that it remains safe for everyone."

Commenting on the forthcoming opening of the centre, Ebele Okobi, Facebook's Public Policy Director, Africa added: "This further highlights our commitment to serving the community of people using our platforms across Africa, as well as our commitment to continuing to invest and partner locally across the continent. I am delighted that through our partnership with Samasource we will be opening our first content review centre here in Africa."

Facebook says its content review team members are assigned a queue of reported posts to evaluate one by one. Facebook says the reviewers are not required to evaluate any set number of posts — there is no quota they must meet when it comes to the amount of content being reviewed.

The content review teams include a combination of full-time employees, contractors and partner-companies located around the world, along with 27 third-party fact-checking partnerships in 17 countries. In addition to human reviews, Facebook uses AI and machine learning tech to identify harmful content.

"At Samasource we believe that giving work is the most powerful solution to ending global poverty. We use technology and private sector methods to measurably improve access to work and job training. As one of the largest digital employers in East Africa, we're excited to partner with Facebook in Nairobi to help keep people on Facebook safe and continue our mission. Our team will receive extensive training and support, benefit from industry-leading facilities, and have the opportunity to advance their careers in tech through this partnership," concluded Carolyn Komen, Samasource Program Director.

Vodafone Ghana has partnered with Facebook to deploy Express Wifi in residential areas.

Express Wi-Fi aims to reduce barriers to connectivity such as limited infrastructure and high data costs, giving more people, such as small business entrepreneurs and developers, the opportunity to connect and build community The Wifi will enable retail entrepreneurs to offer fast and affordable Wi-fi services at hotspots spread across communities.

Chief Executive Officer of Vodafone Ghana, Yolanda Cuba, said, "It is necessary for everyone no matters his or her background to connect to industrial and digital revolution especially in the current world where technology dominates.

She said according to the National Communications Authority, despite a data penetration rate of 80.3 per cent, large portions of underprivileged Ghanaians were still unable to afford easy access to data due to the price.

She noted that the partnership between the two progressive technology companies was set to transform an industry that was already making a concerted effort to establish data dominance in the sub-region, adding that, Vodafone had already deployed hotspots within Accra for the initiative at areas including Nima, Maamobi, Pigfarm, Jamestown and Abossey Okai.

Group raises alarm of election violence

Posted: 07 Feb 2019 04:31 AM PST

A coalition of civil society groups have raised alarm over the stockpiling of weapons in Bayelsa State and Niger Delta ahead of next week election.

The convener, Coalition  Against  Electoral  Violence, Comrade  Olufemi Lawson at a conference in Lagos said the situation was worrisome.

He said during the 2015 election, the world witnessed an unimaginable height of violence unleashed on the innocent people of the Bayelsa.

"As this crucial election gets closer, we have found it extremely imperative to inform Nigerians and the international community, about the likelihood of violence in some parts of the country, if the necessary checks are not undertaken by the Federal government and various authorities across our land.

"This clarion call becomes inevitable at this point, as we have come to the realization, that elections should no longer be seen as wars and that whosoever engage in the destruction of properties and lives of our people, during the election period, is made to bear the consequences of his or her actions. "

Lawson said those who embark on election violence must be brought to book, noting that their conduct would lead to political apathy if not checked.

"The Coalition called upon all patriotic Nigerians, leaders and members of the International community, to join hands with them as they commence a new phase of seeking justice for these victims of the senseless act of political desperation. They are also alarmed that from all available reports that these same perpetrators are already recruiting thugs and stockpiling arms, ahead of the forthcoming general elections.

"Walled on the International Community, embassies and foreign governments to place a visa ban on these purveyors of violence as a further deterrence to those involved in electoral violence in the country.

"We demanded that the Bayelsa State government, commence the immediate implementation of the reports of the Justice Margaret Akpomiemie led commission of inquiry, which investigated the violence, mayhem and grave breach of the peace that occurred in the state before and during the state 2015/2016 governorship election," he said.

PDP members join APC in Akwa Ibom

Posted: 07 Feb 2019 04:10 AM PST

PDP Defectors
More members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Akwa Ibom State have joined the All Progressives Congress (APC).

One of the defectors is Utibe Ibanga, an aide of Governor Udom Emmanuel. Ibanga, until Tuesday, was Governor Emmanuel's Assistant on Projects.

Other defectors include former chairman of Ikot Ekpene council David Umana. The defectors joined APC during its campaign rally at the Ikot Ekpene Township Stadium.

Ibanga said he was quitting the government because of the governor's lack of interest in the welfare of his aides.

Emmanuel has suffered mass resignations from his government in recent months by aides, mostly citing poor working conditions and the governor's lack of electoral value.

Those who have resigned their appointment are:  Chris Okorie (Special Assistant on Electoral Matters); Elder Ibanga Etang (Special Assistant on Project Monitoring); Pastor Abasiandikan Nkono (Special Assistant on Projects); Utibe Idem (Special Assistant on Projects); Umo Assiak (Special Assistant on Projects) and   Anietie Ebe (Special Assistant on Project Monitoring).

Others are: Mfon Udeme (Special Assistant on Electoral Matters); Joe Iniodu (Special Assistant on Media); Idorenyin Esikot (Special Assistant on Small & Medium Scale Enterprises); Dr. Anthony Usoro (Senior Special Assistant on Demographic Planning); Godswill Ekpenyong (Special Assistant on Projects) and Derek Tower Umoh (Special Assistant on Projects).

Two commissioners – Victor Antai and Ibanga Akpabio, also resigned and defected to the APC from the PDP.

Ibanga's defection came barely a day after two former local government chairmen, Ukana Udofia (Ibesikpo Asutan) and Dr Eventus Edem (Uruan) and a popular comedian and former Supervisor in Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government, Usukoson Etim (Inim), dumped the PDP during the APC campaign rally in Ibesikpo Asutan.

Addressing the rally, Udofia said he was defecting with over 1,000 PDP members, having been led by the "spirit".

He said: "The spirit led me to leave. We have been offered the best as Akwa Ibom people through the candidacy of Obong Nsima Ekere and we have no option than to join that team in order to get the best."

Dr Edem, a PDP Caucus member in the state, declared: "With my entry into APC today, PDP has finally collapsed in Uruan."

Etim said he left the PDP because of marginalisation and canvassed support for all APC candidates.
