TeeBillz throws shade after Tiwa Savage dissed him

Posted: 30 Mar 2019 12:00 AM PDT

Nigerian sensational singer, Tiwa Savage, recently jumped on trending music challenge, #fvckyouchallenge and her version has got social media users going wild with excitement and as the case may be, speculations too.

TeeBillz throws shade at Tiwa Savage
The lyrics of the song contained heavy shade-throwing that is arguably brutal. Many people who listened to the song assumed she was either referring to her ex-husband Tee Billz or her bestie, Wizkid.

Reacting to the speculations, she wrote:

"Other male artists don do their own challenge but na my own be sub? …it is not, beautiful people, just a challenge ❤️ I hate no one and would never disrespect anyone like that. Never "

Throwing more shade on the unidentified man, award-winning Savage also spoke about the debt the guy is still owing Escape, which might probably be a popular night club in Lagos, and how he felt her dark skin wasn't good enough for him.

Fans are since speculating that she is either dissing the father of her child or that it could be references to sensational Nigerian singer, Wizkid whom tabloids and many fans continue to believe is her lover.

Well, TeeBillz seems to have responded with a subtle shade on Instagram by sharing a photo of his sons face-timing. He wrote;

"Until the money in this world and the fame can equal to these blessings! Y'all can miss me with that BS…….. #PositiveVibe 💛 Na who never see money before money go faze!!!! But I never see dis kind blessings before! #NextChapter"

Footballer Didier Drogba fights back after being sued for £1million by a shoemaker

Posted: 29 Mar 2019 11:00 PM PDT

Didier Drogba has launched a legal fightback after being sued for £1million by a shoemaker. The Chelsea legend linked up with a Canadian shoe designer during his time with Montreal Impact three seasons ago.

Footballer Didier Drogba
Drogba is said to have agreed to promote Jordan Pascal's luxury JAD brand, but reportedly skipped an event at London's Selfridges in 2017. The upmarket store reportedly went on to sell just a few pairs of the footwear.

Pascal has now sued the retired striker for £1.25million in lost earnings, expenses and damages. Drogba, 41, will hope the case is booted out when heard at Montreal's high court.

Pascal says in his lawsuit:

"Even though the contract was not formally signed, Drogba explicitly accepted its terms.

"His behaviour trapped me in a maze of broken promises and negligence. It exhausted my finances, destroyed my reputation in the fashion industry, made investors go away and led me to the brink of ruin and bankruptcy."

However Drogba's lawyers responded: "The allegations are false and defamatory. We will take the appropriate measures.

"He has always respected his obligations, as though the two parties were tied by the agreement for him to be the brand's ambassador."

Diseases cost Africa $2.4trillion a year, says WHO

Posted: 29 Mar 2019 08:28 AM PDT

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that nearly 630 million years of healthy life were lost in 2015 due to the diseases afflicting the population across its 47 Member States in Africa, now amounting to a loss of more than 2.4 trillion international dollars ($) from the region's gross domestic product value annually.

Non-communicable diseases have overtaken infectious diseases as the largest drain on productivity, accounting for 37 per cent of the disease burden. Other culprits for lost healthy years are communicable and parasitic diseases; maternal, neonatal and nutrition-related conditions; and injuries.

Around 47%, or $ 796 billion, of this lost productivity value, could be avoided in 2030 if the Sustainable Development Goals related to these health conditions are achieved, WHO found.

"Four years into the implementation of countries' efforts towards achieving UHC, current average expenditure on health in the Region falls short of this expectation," the WHO Regional Director for Africa, Dr Matshidiso Moeti, writes in the foreword to A Heavy Burden: The Productivity Cost of Illness in Africa, which was launched during the second WHO Africa Health Forum this week in Cabo Verde.

As a target of Sustainable Development Goal 3, universal health coverage would require countries in the WHO African Region to spend, on average, at least $ 271 per capita per year on health, or 7.5% of the region's gross domestic product.

According to United Nations Conference on Trade and Development estimates, attaining the 17 Sustainable Development Goals will require spending ranging from $ 1.5 trillion to $ 2.5 trillion per year until 2030, or up to $ 37.5 trillion. Low-income countries will need an additional $ 671 billion dollars ($ 76 per capita on average) until 2030 to attain the health-related Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

To achieve the health-related SDG targets, countries must invest adequately in the development of resilient national and local health systems to effectively, affordably and efficiently deliver the integrated packages of proven cost-effective interventions contained in relevant programmatic global strategies and plans to target populations in need.

The findings of the WHO study on disease burden suggest that health systems strengthening should focus on rich as well as poor countries and on all ages as well as on the specific disease categories.

Five countries (the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Nigeria, South Africa and the United Republic of Tanzania) accounted for almost 50% of the total years lost in healthy life (or DALYs) accrued in the WHO African Region.

The unpredictability of public revenues combined with mounting debt pressure is limiting the potential fiscal space that can be made available for health. Private financing sources have filled the gap, but either with out-of-pocket expenses that result in financial hardship or insufficient voluntary private health insurance that is not effective in extending service coverage to those that need it.

As the report emphasizes, achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030, including the target of universal health coverage, will require political will and a greater focus on government-led planning and financing for health. It will also necessitate greater outlays from public revenue, reforms to raise additional revenue and strategic purchasing mechanisms. And it will require that people usually left behind be put at the centre of health financing reform.

"This report illustrates how achievement of the critical health SDG targets, including universal health coverage, would contribute to poverty eradication efforts on a large scale, reduce disparities in lifespan, tackle social exclusion and promote political stability and economic development in the WHO African Region," explains Grace Kabaniha, Health Economist in the WHO Regional Office for Africa. "It also provides much-needed evidence that ministries of health can use in dialogue on resource allocation with ministries of finance. It adds to the body of evidence showing that health is a strategic investment for development."

All of them are of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)

The Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Mahmud Yakubu, who was represented by the National Commissioner in charge of Cross River, Akwa Ibom and Delta, Dr. Mustapha Mohammed, presented the certificates to them at the INEC headquarters in Calabar.

BREAKING: CCT: Tribunal orders Onnoghen to defend charges

Posted: 29 Mar 2019 07:49 AM PDT

Walter Onnoghen
The Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) has rejected the no-case submission made in his trial by suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen.

CCT Tribunal Chairman, Danladi Umar, in a ruling, said the prosecution has provided sufficient evidence to establish a prima facie case against the defendant to warrant his being called to enter his defence.

Umar referred to a confessional statement made by the defendant in which he admitted omitting to declare the five domiciliary accounts he has been operating in Standard Chartered Bank since 20009.

The CCT Chairman said the confessional statement was sufficient to warrant the tribunal to ask the defendant to enter his defence if he has any.

Umar rejected the no-case submission and ordered the defendant to enter a defence against the six-count charge of non-declaration of assets brought against him by the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB).

Proceedings in the tribunal later went rowdy when after concluding his ruling, Umar adjourned to Monday (April 1, 2019) for the defendant to open his defence.

Many lawyers in the defence team shouted in protest when Umar ignored appeals by lead defence lawyer, Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN) that April 1 was too short for the defendant to adequately prepare for his defence.

While Awomolo was still on his feet, asking the tribunal Chairman to allow the defendant sufficient time to prepare, Umar stood up and walked away, leaving other members of the tribunal to scamper after him.

A dejected Awomolo accused Umar of oppressing the defence.

As Umar and the two other members of the tribunal walked away, Awomolo said: "If this is justice, then, God bless Nigeria."

Detail shortly…

Sanwo-Olu: I’ll never betray Lagosians

Posted: 29 Mar 2019 07:37 AM PDT

Babajide Sanwo-Olu
Lagos State Governor-elect Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Friday promised not to betray Lagosians after assuming the reins on May 29.

He reiterated his determination to preside over an all-inclusive government, adding that other campaign promises will also be fulfilled.

Sanwo-Olu described himself as a winner of free, fair and credible election, saying the electoral commission deserved applause for conducting a peaceful exercise.

He also extended a hand of fellowship to the 40 opposition candidates who competed with him, stressing that their inputs were required in tackling the myriad of challenges in education, health, transportation and the environment.

Sanwoolu said:"A victory for one is a victory for all. It is a victory for all Lagosisns. No victor, no vanguished. We will all make life better for Lagosians."

The governor-elect spoke at the Lagos State office of the Independent National Electoral commission (INEC) shortly after receiving his Certificate of Return from Resident Electoral Commissioner Sam Olumekun.
Sanwo-Olu was accompanied by his wife, Dr Ibijoke; his deputy, Dr Obafemi Hamzat; his wife Oluremi; Lagos State APC chairman Tunde Balogun; party secretary Dr. Wale Ahmed; Governorship Advisory Council (GAC) deputy leader Prince Oluyole Olusi; Senator Musiliu Obanikoro and Chief Demola Seriki.

Also at the ceremony were Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, Pa Sunny Ajose, Jumoke Okoya-Thomas, Hakeem Bamgbala, Joe Igbokwe, Abiodun Salami, Bayo Ajisebutu, Ayodele Adewale, Bayo Ajisebutu, Fausat Gbadebo, Emmanuel Bamgboye and Imam Shakiru Gafar Mofesayo of Lagos Central Mosque.

Thanking the stakeholders, Sanwo-Olu commended INEC and other apparatus of government involved in the election, saying that the reward for hard work is more work.

He also thanked President Muhammadu Buhari for showing leadership example of what the APC stood for and for winning Lagos votes.

The governor-elect also applauded the national chairman, Comrade Adam's Oshiomhole, Lagos APC GAC leaders, and Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, who he noted, was in birthday celebration mood.

He peeped into the future, praying that all the critical stakeholders will be present at his inauguration on May 29.

However, in a voice somehow laced with emotion, Sanwo-Olu said the inauguration date will coincide with the post-humous birthday of his late mother, who had passed on few years ago.

Reiterating his commitment to an all-inclusive administration, the governor-elect said his doors were already open to stakeholders, including the opposition, to make their contributions to governance.

He promised to reenact the true greatness of Lagos which the stakeholders stand for.

Sanwo-Olu added: "We will not betray public confidence. Better times are coming. Lagosians deserve the best. We must get it right in Lagos.

"If we get it right in Lagos, we will get it right in Nigeria.

"We are ready. We are committed. We will do the job that Lagosians have given to us".

Imam Gafar, who paired with a Christian priest to pray for Sanwo-Olu and Hamzat, urged them to work for public good.

The cleric, who also advised them to beware of pychopants who peddle falsehoods, wished the governor-elect a successful tenure.

Also, he charged Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu and Mrs. Oluremi Hamzat to be prepared for the challenges of adjustment to new life and cooperate with their husbands.

The REC reflected on the election, saying that it was adjdged credible, smooth, peaceful, free and fair by the international community.

Hailing Sanwoolu for his victory, Olumekun said:"Lagosians have spoken Your Excellency and I dare say that they spoke loudly and without equivocation ocation.

"Therefore, the journey to a better Lagos is laid squarely in your court. May God Almighty be your lode-star in this journey."

Nothing that Lagosians maintained their peace and decorum during the exercise, he urged them to sustain the tempo of tranquility.
Olumekun thanked the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security chaired by Lagos Police Commissioner and the National Youth Service Corps for their collaboration.

He thanked the Branch Controller of the Central Bank of Nigeria Atise Ekhator for ensuring the safety of the sensitive electoral materials, traditional rulers, media led by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) chairman Dr. Quasm Akinreti, civil society, youth and women groups for their cooperation.

However, the REC lamented the apathy that marred the poll, pointing out that, in Eti-Osa Constituency 1, the turnout was below four percent.

He said: "This is unacceptable in a sophisticated society like Lagos."

Olumekun, therefore, admonished the political parties, pressure groups, religious bodies and civil society groups to rise to the occasion in the areas of voter sensitisation, education and mobilisation of the electorate to complement Inec's efforts in ensuring large turnout of voters during elections.

Tensions in A’Ibom as Policemen kill NURTW chairman

Posted: 29 Mar 2019 07:28 AM PDT

There is palpable tension in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom state capital following the gruesome murder of the Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Comrade Ubong Udo Udofia, by angry Policemen.

Udofia, 45, a.k.a 'Evolution', was said to have been killed by four policemen who used to hit him after trying unsuccessfully to kill him through direct shooting.

Narrating her ordeal at their home at 179, Ikpa Road, Afaha Oku, Uyo, the state capital on Friday, the distraught wife, Margareth, fighting back tears, explained that her husband met his untimely death when minor argument with a Policeman resulted in full blown brawl.

"I was just returning from the market when I was called suddenly to witness what happened to my husband. When I got to the place, my husband was already gasping for breath until he gave up in my present".

According to her, "a Policeman had parked his car and was loading passengers near the Itam motor park, when members of the task force working for my husband accosted him and directed that he should enter the park and load so others should not join".

The Policeman, on mufti, she added, resisted and the task force members demanded for the car key and he refused. The car, it was gathered, was pushed into the park on the orders for the deceased to adjudicate on the matter.

"My husband was inside another vehicle waiting for the car owner, not knowing he had called four of his colleagues, who arrived, and immediately opened fire but when the bullets could not get at him, they resorted to using gun butts to club him till he became unconscious.

"Several other Policemen attached to construction firm, Julius Berger, were called for more reinforcement and more sporadic shooting followed leading to people scampering for safety including the task force officers," she explained.

Mrs. Udofia, who lamented over what would become of her nine children left behind with the death of her husband, called the Inspector General of Police (IGP), the state Police Command and the government of governor Udom Emmanuel, to ensure justice was done in the case.

"We have nine children to take care of and the eldest is just 15 and none has entered the university yet. So my appeal is that my husband should not die in vain because all the evidence point to deliberate and premeditated murder because my husband and the task force members did not beat the Policeman.

"All they did was just to direct him to comply with the regulation of loading in the park and not constitute road nuisance by loading on the road side because touting is illegal in Akwa Ibom.

"Luckily, one of the Policemen who participated in my husband's death was trying to escape from the scene and unfortunately for him, his identity card fell off his shirt and was picked up as evidence on the scene.

"The name of the Policeman is Sergeant Nwafor Silas, from Ebonyi State Police Command and attached to Julius Berger with service number; 425015", she said.

Disturbed by the incident, it was gathered that NURTW officials were poised for protest, even as angry youths of Afaha Oku, were said to have plotted a reprisal attack.

The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Itam Division, CSP Francis Irabor, who visited the deceased at the God's Own Hospital, Park Road, before he died, promised full scale investigation into the matter, assuring that appropriate punishment would be meted on the culprits.

Besides, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Odike Macdon, confirmed the incident but could not ascertain whether any reprisal attacks were in the offing.

The truth of the matter, he assured would be known at the end of the investigations, even as he appealed to the people not to take the laws into their own hands.

The remains of the late task force chair, according to the family have been deposited at the Etang Ekak Mortuary along IBB Way, Uyo.

TV Host Personality Bolanle Olukanmi slams Nigerians over Oge Okoye’s visit to Pastor Lukau

Posted: 29 Mar 2019 05:30 AM PDT

TV Host Personality Bolanle Olukanmi
TV host, Bolanle Olukanmi has slammed all those making mockery of actress Oge Okoye for visiting South African pastor, Alph Lukau.

The actress visited the Alleluia International Ministries church with her daughter last year and they were brought out to the front of the church by the pastor who then proceeded to prophesy onto her life.

In a video which recently resurfaced, pastor Lukau made some prophesies which reduced Oge Okoye to tears.

"Is this your daughter," Pastor Lukau asked The at some point.

"Yes," the Nigerian actress replied.

"She's special," Pastor Lukau said and Oge passionately replied, "yes, I know."

Without being told, the pastor mentioned that the child's name is "Chibuike Crystal" and Oge was visibly impressed by his ability to tell her daughter's name.

Oge's visit to the controversial Pastor came before the pastor trended for bringing a "dead" man back to life then giving him food to eat.

Things began to fall apart for the pastor when the funeral houses embroiled in the fake miracle opened up and called out the pastor for deceiving them and using their hearse to fake a miracle.

Sharing the video on Twitter, @KadunaBae wrote;

So Actress Oge Okoye visits Pastor Alph Luka. Same pastor that acted the fake resurrection 😨
Can someone explain what's going on? 🤷‍♀️

Reacting to the backlash the actress is receiving on social media, Bolanle Olukanmi wrote:

"Oge Okoye is currently trending on Twitter Naija, and people are slamming her for going to pastor Alph's even after seeing the resurrection charade.

"But, the truth about that video is that Oge went to the church before the whole resurrection saga.

"All of you that are making fun of Oge Okoye , I pray you are never in a situation so dire or desperate and in your despair the world mocks you instead of empathise with you.
She is obviously going through something and yet everyone is on here shouting that she is acting. Bruv. Did you wake up today with your heart. Haba."

Court dismisses suit challenging Adamawa gov’ship election

Posted: 29 Mar 2019 05:03 AM PDT

Umaru Fintri
The Adamawa State High Court sitting in Yola has dismissed a suit asking it to nullify the governorship election in the state.

The case failed because the plaintiff tendered documents not properly certified and because he failed to prove his case by not tendering a document that was vital for the determination of the case, the trial judge, Justice Abdulaziz Waziri, ruled Friday morning.

The candidate of the Movement for the Restoration and Defence of Democracy (MRDD), Rev Eric Theman, represented by his counsel, Bar Mustapha Ibrahim, had gone before the court to allege that he was deprived the right to be voted for in the March 9 election because the logo of his party was not on the ballot paper even after he had been recognised as a gubernatorial candidate.

But the judge said the plaintiff failed to tender the ballot paper indicating that the logo of his party was omitted from it.

"The fundamental document that would have proved the point was never brought before this court. The burden of proof lies on the plaintiff. This burden was not properly discharged," he said, stressing that the reliefs sought by the plaintiff had therefore failed.

Justice Waziri advised him or any other party wishing to appeal the judgement to do so within 90 days at the Yola Division of the Court of Appeal.

The judgment of the court came Friday morning, hours after the state supplementary gubernatorial election was concluded and Rt Hon Umaru Fintiri of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) declared winner, having scored the highest votes in both the March 9 main election and the Thursday return

Tinubu: The power of Lagos blueprint

Posted: 29 Mar 2019 04:42 AM PDT

Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Oluremi Tinubu
As the All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart Asiwaju Bola Tinubu celebrates his 67th birthday today, Group Political Editor EMMANUEL OLADESU revisits the achievements of the eminent politician, administrator and governor of Lagos State between 1999 and 2007, which his successors have continued to build on in the Centre of Excellence.

Twelve years after, Lagosians are full of nostalgia. The welfarist legacy of the Tinubu administration in Lagos State has served as an enduring foundation for successive governments to build on. The achievements of former Governor Bola Tinubu between 1999 and 2007 underscored the power of diligent planning and execution of the famed 24-Year Socio-economic and Political Development Plan.

The Lagos blueprint also attested to Tinubu's power of foresight and the import of team work. Lagos, according to observers, has remained a model state because it has evolved a standard that cannot permit deviations by successors. In the successive cabinet of talents are seasoned technocrats who cannot afford to play politics with the development of the state, and the most important factor in success is the judicious allocation of resources.

Indisputably, the former governor was prepared for the job. He is educated and highly exposed. Also, Tinubu is not a politician without a second address. He had made name in the private sector as a successful boardroom guru. Tinubu left Nigeria for the United States of America in search of the proverbial golden fleece in 1975. He attended the Richard Daley College, Illinois, where he was on the college's Honours' List, and later, Chicago State University, Chigaco where he acquired a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, with specialisation in Accounting and Management.

Tinubu shone like a star in the tertiary institution. In his second year, he was accorded the honour of teaching remedial tutorial classes on part-time basis to the students of the faculty. He was on the Dean's List throughout his undergraduate years. He received the Outstanding Students' Award, University Scholar's Award and Certificate of Merit in Accounting and Finance in his first year. Apart from his academic prowess, he was also a campus politician. He was elected as the President of the Accounting Society in his final year.

After his university education, Tinubu worked with the America based-accounting firm, Arthur Anderson. Later, he moved to 'Deloitte Haskins and Sells', now Deloitte Haskins and Touche for his professional training. The young accountant also received professional training in other prominent firms, including General Motors, First National Bank of ChicagoProcter and Gamble, International Harvester, Fortune 50 Firms, and DEC, the largest communication and utility company in the United States.

Between 1981 and 1082, Tinubu was a member of the Deloitte team that established the financial system of ARAMCO, the giant oil company. He was even retained by the firm to supervise the implementation of its financial system. However, his employment with the Mobil Producing Nigeria as a senior auditor marked a turning point. He rose to the position of the Audit Manager, and later, Treasurer of the Mobil Producing, Nigeria. Under his leadership, there were prudent financial management, aggressive corporate think-tank for the reorganisation of the company's financial system and treasury activities, the integration of staff development, cost saving and fraud detection and prevention. The experience made Tinubu to describe himself as a financial surgeon.

In the Third Republic, Tinubu entered politics as a new breed. Despite being a green horn, his transformation was legendary. He was an outstanding member of the Primose, led By Chief Dapo Sarunmi. As a Social Democratic Party (SDP) senator, he had wanted to serve as Senate President. But, he had to step down for Dr. Iyorcha Ayu. In the National Assembly, Tinubu was not a bench warmer. He was the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Banking, Finance, Appropriation and Currency. It was distressing to him that former military Head of State Gen. sani Abacha sacked the civilian authorities in 1993.

Tinubu bounced back in 1999 as governor. Since he had a vision for Lagos State, he planned well, laid a solid foundation for its future and made a difference.  Lagosians recall with fondness the Tinubu years in the Round House, Alausa, Ikeja, the seat of government.  The challenges were daunting. To change the face of the metropolis, Tinubu assembled the best brains in his cabinet. More importantly, he fashioned out a 24-year Development Blueprint, which his successor, Babatunde Fashola (SAN), successfully built on.

Paying tribute to Tinubu during his 60th birthday, Ondo State Governor Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN), In his tribute to the pathfinder during his 60th birthday, Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN), observed that the former governor tried to reinvent the glorious Awolowo era in the defunct Western Region. He applauded his sagacity and leadership qualities, stressing that "Tinubu remains a major factor in Nigeria's politics."

Tinubu was a dynamic administrator and workaholic. As noted by his Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Dele Alake, "Asiwaju Tinubu has no apologies for pushing his health to an edge. He says he applied for the job. He begged Lagosians to give him the job, to give him a place to stand so that he could move their world forward. And if the people identified him as the person for the job, he has no option, but to put in his very best."

Also, Tinubu's media aide, Kehinde Bamigbetan, said: "Governor Tinubu's philosophy of governance was welfarist. He believes the state must serve the interest of the poor and the underprivileged by encouraging the rich to subsidise the poor. He believes that government, as the agency set up to do this job, must be efficient in raising revenue and dispensing services."

Tinubu inherited a Lagos State that was on its knees, although it remained a potentially great state. Lagos roads were an eyesore. According to records, in five years, Tinubu had awarded contracts for 422 road projects, and 308  were completed. His Works and Infrastructure Commissioner, Chief Rauf Aregbesola, later governor of Osun State, was up and doing.

Road projects completed include Ijegun, Ojo; Oshifolarin, Somolu; Rhythm 93.7, Eti-Osa; Arufa Olugbemi, Ojo; Adeola Odeku, Victoria Island; Agege Motor Road (Idi Oro to Ilupeju Byepass),Mushin and Ojuwoye, Eko Akete, Abaronje-Okerube, Ikotun-Igbado; Alakuko, Ojokoro; and Aniyaloye/Edidi/Adegboyega/Fatai Bello, Ifelodun. Othere were Irede, Amuwo-Odofin; Owuto Ajaguro, Ikorodu; Ekoro, Agbado Oke; Aboru, Agbado Oke odo; Okun Alfa, Ibeju; Agunji Ajiran, Eti Osa West; Old Ota, Ifako Ijaye; Kudirat Abiola Way, Oregun, Maroko-Epe Bye-Pass, Eti Osa West; and Oterubi Ogidan, Agboju.  A memoranda of agreement was signed with reputable construction  companies for the construction of Ajao/Ejigbo Road/Bridge, LASU-Iba-igbo Elerin-Agboroko-Badagry Expressway, and Isheri Osun-Isolo Housing Estate-Ago Palace Way.

The Lagos Island Central Business District Road upgrading and renewal project were undertaken to give the most crucial economic zone a face lift. The roads were Broad Street/Lagos Western outer Ring Road/ Marina/ Third mainland Ramp; Nnamidi Azikiwe/ cater Bridge; Cater Bridge/ Ereko martins/Balogun and Idumagbo/Third mailand Bridge and inner adjoining roads.

Tinubu also repositioned the health sector through heavy financial and human capital investment. More General Hospitals were established. The existing ones were rehabilitated. Also, the administration built more health centres at the grassroots. Modern medical equipment were procured for the health hospitals and helath centres. New medical laboratories were also set up.

The administration introduced free health policy for children below 18 and adults above 65 years. The drugs for patients were heavily subsidized. Under the Blindness Prevention Programme, millions of Lagosians were saved from sight problems. There were free eye surgeries and free glasses (Dingi Bola) were distributed to patients. To reduce the scourge of HIV/AIDS, the Lagos State AIDS Control Agency intensified its enlightenment programme targeted at youths. The administration's "Roll Back Malaria" programme complemented the Eko Free Malaria Treatment programme under which millions of people were treated. Government also combated the dreadful diseases, including tuberculosis by setting up clinic devoted to the disease and polio through the immunization of millions of children.

To attend to medical emergencies, the  LASAMBUS scheme was initiated. Dozens of ambulances were provided to ease rescue operations. Tinubu introduced reforms, which led to the decentralization of the Health Management Board, the revatalisation of the Primary healthcare System, the establishment of the Lagos State Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency to ensure quality assurance, the establishment of Hospital Services Commission and the promotion of partnerships in health between the government and the private sector.

In 1999, Tinubu inherited a city of fifth. Refuse disposal was a major headache. The fear of epidemic engulfed the state.  The former governor separated the Ministry of Environment from the Ministry of Physical Planning and repositioned it to combat flooding and coordination of waste disposal operations.

Also, the administration defended the education sector. Lagos is a mini-Nigeria playing host to citizens from other states of the federation. A discriminatory education policy was incompatible with the spirit of Lagos. Tinubu believed passionately that education was the antidote to poverty. Moreover, his mother, the late Abibat Mogaji, always sent a long list of students to him for financial assistance. Thus, the former governor started paying WAEC and NECO fees and fees for internal examinations. The administration kicked-off the Millennium School Projects as part of efforts to guarantee a conducive atmosphere for teaching and learning in public schools. In 2001, Tinubu returned the missionary schools to their owners, thereby enhancing private participation in the critical sector.

The administration's youth development programme led to the annual "One Day Governor" event. The academic competition anchord by the New Era Foundation sponsored by the First Lady, Mrs. Oluremi Tinubu, thre up the young scholars. Also, the former governor converted the dreadful Ita Oko prisoners camp into a youth skills acquisition centre. There was also a programme of women empowerment to enable women cope with the harsh economic realities and make them become . More importantly, women were reoriented towards self-employment.

In the housing sector, Tinubu administration facilitated access to quality accommodation and succeeded in making the Lekki corridor the fastest growing estates. The former governor lamented the Federal Government's failed housing policy and the neglect of the housing needs of the former  Federal Capital Territory (FCT). He restructured the Ministry of Works and Housing by upgrading the Housing Department or directorate into a full fledged ministry. The ministry was mandated to provide 5,00 housing units yearly and coordinate the activities of the Lagos State Development and Property Corporation (LSDPC) and the lagos Building Investment Company for more effective management. More importantly, the sector was repositioned to attract private sector participation.

There was a turnaround in the fortunes of the LSDPC. Its account was red before Tinubu assumed office. In his first term, the moribund Michael Otedola Low Income Housing was completed. The Jubilee Housing Scheme-q 1,300 units of low income housing designated as Abraham Adesanya Housing Estate, was completed. The project was undertaken directly by the ministry. Also delivered were the Lekki Scheme 1, named after the late Eleko of Lagos, Oba Adeyinka Oyekan, the Oko Oba units, Oregun Estate, Ikeja, Femi Okunnu Housing estate, Leki and the Mile 2 Housing Estate. Also, concerted efforts were made to develop the proposed estates in Gbagada 1 and 2, Ibeshe, Ikeja 1 and 2, Oko Oba/Alaba and Ewu Elepe. There were proposals on "Teachers' Village," "Civil servants' Village" and "Judges Village." The mortgage system was strengthened and foreign investors were encouraged.

There were also novel initiatives in transportation, including the development of modern water transportation, BRT and LASTMA.

Under the visionary administration, Lagos blazed the trail in the Independent Power Project (IPP), which continually supplied 270 mega watts of electricity to the national grid. The project demonstrated the capacity of some states to generate electricity, if the power to legislate on it is on the Concurrent List.  Tinubu electrification project covered over 100 communities. In his first term, 53 rural communities were targeted.  The projects were completed in Egan, Atewolere, Ifesowapo, Aboru, Agbado Ayetoro, Akorede, Isheri Ikosi, Orile Aguntan, Rofo, Borokini, Omologbede, Araromi, Oke Agbo, Erekusu, Logberu, Okegelu and Ebute, Lekki. Others were Origanringan, Onigbolakowe, Oke odo Elemoro, Ipaja Isale odo, Agenuba, Ajelogo, Mutaku, Egansando, Ayanfe, topo and Ikola Agbenaje.

Tinubu created additional 37 councils, following the legitimate agitations of Lagosians for improved governance at the grassroots. The number of the councils rose to 57. However, the National Assembly  refused to list the councils in the constitution.

For the former governor, necessity became the mother of invention. When the allocation for Lagos was seized, Tinubu put on his thinking cap. He embarked on a novel and aggressive revenue generation drive, which halted the dependence on federal allocations to the state. In 1999, under the military rule, Lagos was generating N600,000 monthly. Today, the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) is around N33 billion.

For eight years, Tinubu also agitated for a special status, or special economic assistance, for Lagos State. Up to now, it is still a dream.

Tinubu resolved the succession hurdle successfully in 2007. His successor, Fashola, built on his achievements.

Tinubu has received many awards. They include the 'Best Governor of for 2001 by the Nigerian/Belgian Chamber of Commerce, Winner of 2002 Best Practices Prize in improving the living environment (by the Federal Ministry of Works and UN habitat Group), 2000 Best computerized Government in Nigeria (by the Computer Association of Nigeria), 2003 Green Crystal Award for Enhancing the Value of the Environment (by Clean-Up Nigeria (CUN), 2002 Healthcare Award as the best provider of best health services in Nigeria, Presidential Merit Award for technological Development by the Nigerian Society of Engineers, 2001 National Literacy award for outstanding contribution to mas literacy, Co-winner of 2002 Outstanding Alumnus award of the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC), 2001 Distinguished Alumnus Award by Chicago State University, Distinguished Service Award for Exemplary Leadership by the Lagos State Economic Summit Group, Certificate of Commendation by the national Conference of Black mayors, Silver Jubilee Anniversary Award as Labour Friendly Governor by the National Union of Petroleum and Natural gas Workers (NUPENG) and Award of Recognition by Nigerian Berge Limited for the initiation of the Independent Power project (IPP).

Tinubu was also conferred with a Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree by the Abia State University.

Asiwaju: The man and his eternal vision

Posted: 29 Mar 2019 04:19 AM PDT

Tinubu and Buhari
Lagos State House of Assembly member Olumuyiwa Wahab Jimoh, (Apapa Constituency II), extols the virtues of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, who clocks 67 today.

Every epoch in every nation throws up its own heroes. Men and women who in the midst of adversity and uncertainty saw clearly within the mist a vision of a glorious future and with unusual courage and uncommon determination pursued its actualisation. These are men and women who have impacted positively the lives of the people within their jurisdiction and who have become change agents that altered the course of the society at a particular point in time; creating and moulding a nation that has essentially their footprints embedded in all of its strata.

One of the men in Nigeria today who fits into this mould is His Excellency, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu – the Jagaban Borgu. A man who has humbly and practically turned not just the politics of SouthWest Nigeria into a robust and vibrant enterprise that has seen the enthronement of very impactful governance models across its states but the Politics of Nigeria as a nation. Here is a man that understands what the people crave and yearn for and is able to mobilise the nation's politics to meet these expectations.

After all what is Politics all about if not for the mobilisation and allocation of a nation's resources to satisfy the interests and desires of the citizens? This is where the Asiwaju has excelled more than his contemporaries. He understands the objectives of Politics which is that of acquiring political power to satisfy the interest of the majority. His brand of politics therefore captures the true undiluted and sanguine reason for the noble business of politics.

As this living legend turns 67 on the 29th day of March, 2019, we believe that he is worthy of our celebrations. A man who has shaped the lives of many young men and have given them the needed opportunity to participate effectively in the nation's political space, a time like this calls for the doffing of hats and clinking of glasses in honour of the day that saw his glorious entrance into mother earth.

We are truly blessed and are sincerely proud to be part of the great heritage which he has created and is expanding in our dear nation. We join millions of Nigerians all over the country to wish the Asiwaju a happy birthday and congratulate him as he thanks the almighty Allah who has kept and preserved him to see this day. We are more grateful to the Almighty Allah for this celebration because this is one life that is being lived for the benefit of humanity thus preserving him is akin to preserving humanity and giving hope to the masses and peoples of Nigeria.

When God has given a man a task as that which the Asiwaju seem to have been assigned, he equips him, guards and guides every of his footsteps as long as he keeps on the path of that divine mission. Tinubu everyday walks without wavering that divine path. That is daily being demonstrated in the life of this our modern day hero who has not put his foot wrong in most of his engagements though ordinary mortals may not see it and would chose to pass snide remarks but posterity has most of the times proven him right. We dare say that he is a man on a mission and cannot be easily discouraged until his objectives are accomplished.

It is with this in mind that we believe that God being involved in his pursuit for a better Nigeria, any man or group that stands against him is contending with the mighty powers of the almighty God who has continued guarding him jealously. Who can battle with the one who God has chosen and sent on a mission? Any man that pretends to stand against this mission has already lost the battle before it began as would have been seen all over the landscape.
Heroes are visionaries. Inherent in visionaries is an unimaginable quantum of light which they carry and radiate. They spread their light and cause it to expand beyond the confines of their immediate environment as the light shines brighter and brighter. Unfortunately for mankind, men with these qualities are rare and emerge once in a while. Bola Ahmed Tinubu is one of such rare breeds and we are truly blessed as a people and as a nation to have him at this time.

Only men of vision can explode and channel their lights creatively the way Asiwaju has done in the Nigerian and global space. From his Lagos state; standing alone, he was able to spread the light to other South West states with his Progressive politics and practical ideology built on the wings of the present and future context. He has grown these precepts into a national movement despite the challenges and obstacles expectedly mounted by forces of retrogression. The cries of liberty have enveloped our land as the agents of light which he stands as its chief apostle grapple with the remaining vestiges of darkness across the landscape.

He never allowed the pursuit of mundane and filthy lucre to distract him and with unwavering determination; he has focused on the task of building a nation that would deliver the best possible benefit to the majority of Nigerians no matter where they come from. He was offered opportunities to dump his commitment to the people. Carrots were dangled before him to waver on his pristine ideals. Mouth-watering deals were placed before him. He rejected them all for the sake of the people of Nigeria sacrificing his personal ambitions and comfort so that justice, equity and fairness will be enthroned in our beloved nation.

The triumph of the Progressives in the just concluded general elections is the triumph of JAGABANISM. It is the triumph of his ideals and ethos. It is the triumph of patience and longsuffering over short termism and indecent pursuit of personal interests over that of the nation. It is the victory of the good over the bad and once again demonstrates the essence and solidity of vision which Senator Tinubu carries.  We would have said that the success approximates to a canonisation of the man – Tinubu but that would be trying to play God, we would not be wrong however if we say emphatically that the philosophy that drives him has shown so much resilience and effectiveness catapulting him in the process into sainthood amongst not just politicians but also political thinkers.

In all these, this great leader has remained humble, available and easily accessible. His doors are always wide open to his people and whosoever seeks his audience. He has thus provided his usual wise counsels to us, guided our thoughts and actions making us to see what we may not have seen if we had acted alone. Fortunately, he is open to suggestions and quickly grasps new lines of thoughts and soaks them in like a patched ground hungrily taking in water. That is the stuff with which great leaders are made – avid learners and teachers all moulded into one!.

At 67 Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, remains one of the brightest spots of politics in Nigeria radiating a strong hope of a greater future for the Nigerian project. His forthrightness, his integrity and his courage are unprecedented even in the midst of great opposition. We found that he seem to be made stronger in the midst of very stiff opposition. Where others would have given up, he showed enormous confidence and verve that allows him have transcendence. We all have learnt this from him and we are still learning every day from his fountain of wisdom. Since we are not tired of drinking from this pool, we pray our good God to preserve him more so that we can continue enjoying the nourishment which he has provided for the youth and the emerging members of the political class.

This truly offers all of us both as individuals and as a nation a great opportunity to re-examine our politics. The need to align our actions within the space of contestation for political power ought to be critically reassessed given what the Asiwaju stands for. The need to make public offices deliver the utmost good to the majority has become imperative. The need to create frameworks that would make governance answerable to the people and more accountable to their yearnings and aspirations has become central. This aligns with the celebrant's belief that political office holders and all processes leading to it, during and after it should be subject to the Sovereign – the masses and people.

When this is done, our celebration of this icon and hero of our nation would then be more functional and meaningful. He would prefer that we spend time creating conversations that would make the nation better and deferring to that, it behoves us to seek the enthronement of a political structure that would enable the building of a nation that is progressive and caters to the needs of the majority while protecting the rights of the minority. The need for an inclusive politics which the Jagaban champions; has become critical especially arising out of the just concluded elections.

We therefore pray the good lord to keep him in good health preserving him so that his potentials as a national monument would touch every life and the nation positively. He remains a man created and preserved for Nigeria at this moment. Our prayer is Long life and good health for Senator Ahmed Bola Tinubu.

Our hands are joined with his numerous well-wishers the world over especially his protégés direct or indirect to call upon him to see in this celebration the yearnings, desires and hunger of the people for greater and more creative leadership. We urge His Excellency to accept this burden of leadership which is once again being renewed by his constituents through these celebrations.

May BAT continue basking in the goodwill of God and may his light continue shinning for all to see and follow! We urge all Nigerians from across all the divides of our nation to join us as we bridge the primordial gaps and transcend the Shibboleths that have held us down as a nation by lifting up Senator Tinubu as that patriotic symbol that would lead our nation to its place in the sun.

May the Asiwaju live long! May the Jagaban live long!! May Nigeria march to the Next Level!!!

Jimoh is the Deputy Majority Leader representing Apapa Contituency II, in the Lagos House of Assembly.
