Breaking: Onnoghen likely to face fresh criminal charges

Posted: 24 Mar 2019 02:28 PM PDT

Walter Onnoghen

The suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, may face two fresh trials on alleged huge deposits on his accounts.

There were indications that Onnoghen might be tried for alleged several breaches of the criminal and anti-corruption laws, including money laundering, bribery and tax evasion.

The latest cases also border on alleged strange deposits in his accounts and cash gifts from some Senior Advocates of Nigeria( SANs).

It was learnt that the Federal Government has delayed the arraignment of the CJN in deference to the constitutional provisions on the National Judicial Council (NJC).

The constitution stipulates that such allegations against a judicial officer should first be presented to the NJC.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has submitted a petition and a comprehensive report on Onnoghen's accounts to the NJC.

A top government official, who spoke in confidence with select newsmen, said there are three dimensions to the allegations against Onnoghen.

He said apart from the trial of Onnoghen at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), there might be two other cases against him.

The source said the suspended CJN might be arraigned before a High Court of Justice very soon.

The source said: "When President Muhammadu Buhari decided to suspend Chief Justice Walter Onnoghen on the 25th of January, 2019, it was in response to serious allegations of irregularities, illegalities and criminal conduct contained in petitions submitted against the top judicial officer, and indeed some findings of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which not only substantiated those petitions but threw up even more damning facts.

"Since then, there have been several public revelations and judicial proceedings which are sometimes confusing to members of the general public."

"For clarity, there are two different cases currently ongoing before constituted panels and a separate ethical issue in the public domain,

"The first point of focus has been the failure of the Chief Judge to declare his assets immediately after taking office and every four years thereafter, as required by the 1999 Constitution, which is the supreme law of the land, and the Code of Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act.

"This particular illegality has been admitted in writing by the Chief Justice himself and is a matter for criminal prosecution now before the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT).

"But we must note that because of its specialised nature, CCT has a narrow jurisdiction and the case before it is confined to the issues of asset declaration, failure to declare assets as required by law and false declaration of assets.

"That is what the CCT had been hearing since charges were first filed against the CJN on the 10th of January, 2019.

"The prosecution recently closed its case and lawyers to the suspended CJN are now to open the defence or make a no case submission. Just for clarity, it is worth emphasizing that the CCT will only treat issues relating assets declaration."
The source gave insights into the new cases against the suspended CJN.

He added: "The more interesting aspect of the suspended CJN's dilemma involves allegations of several breaches of the criminal and anti-corruption laws, including money laundering, bribery and tax evasion.

"It is alleged, for instance, that the suspended CJN is the owner of some domiciliary accounts primarily funded through US dollar cash deposits made by himself.

"More disturbing is the pattern of deposits which, according to EFCC, were made in a manner inconsistent with financial transparency and the code of conduct for public officials.

"These include instances of repeated cash deposits of 10,000 US dollars each, totaling close to two million dollars.

"These serious allegations would ordinarily have gone to the High Court for prosecution, but for a case precedent which stipulates that such allegations against a judicial officer should first be presented to the National Judicial Council, more or less an internal disciplinary panel for erring judicial officers, before being prosecuted in a criminal court.

"The allegations of unexplained wealth, huge cash deposits being made into the suspended CJ's Naira, dollar and pound sterling accounts directly from the court and well beyond his estacode and other allowances; unexplained payments into the suspended CJN's account by lawyers who at the same time were appearing before him for adjudication, etc, are currently being handled by the NJC and would be filed in court after the NJC has made its decision on them."

Responding to a question, the top source said: "We must not miss the point that EFCC is also a petitioner against the suspended CJN.

"After carrying out an extensive investigation, some of the findings submitted by the Commission are truly shocking.

"For instance, there are findings to the effect that the CJN allegedly received a Mercedes Benz car and dollar cash deposits from Joe Agi, appearing, who is a Senior Advocate.

"Worse still, the CJN is shown to have received cash gifts directly into his bank accounts from several other senior advocates.

"These implicating cash transactions were going on, in dollar and Naira, even up to 2017 and 2018.

"Even as the world eagerly awaits the decision of NJC on these matters, it is pertinent to emphasize that the conclusion of the cases before the CCT and NJC is not likely to be the end of the matter. Criminal charges are still to be filed in court."

I’m a product of God’s special mercy, protection- VP Osinbajo

Posted: 24 Mar 2019 02:21 PM PDT

Yemi Osinbajo

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Sunday took a cursory look the year 2019 electioneering campaign journey and declared he emerged successful and unhurt because he is a "product of God's special mercy and protection."

Recalling how he miraculously survived helicopter crash in Kabba, Kogi state in February at an interdenominational service of praise and thanksgiving organised for him and the Christian communities at the Obafemi Awolowo Square, Ikenne-Remo, Ogun State, Osinbajo said were it not for God's mercy, he and other occupants of the I'll – fated Chopper would have died in the crash.

Speaking at the event, which has in attendance Governors Akinwunmi Ambode (Lagos) and Abiola Ajimobi (Oyo) as well as the Ogun governor-elect, Dapo Abiodun, Osinbajo ascribed his survival in the crash to the special mercy of God, who according to him, has seen him through many vagaries of life.

Other personalities that joined him at the thanksgiving service included the immediate past governor of Osun state Rauf Aregbesola; Senator Godswill Akpabio; Senator Musiliu Obanikoro; Olusola Oke as well as traditional rulers from the state.
Osinbajo, who was accompanied by his wife, Dolapo to the service, said the thanksgiving in his home town became imperative to thank God for sparing his life and keeping his family.

He offered prayers for peace, progress, stability and promotion for the country, Ogun state, his kinsmen and women, acknowledging that God actually saw him through the rigours and hazards during campaigns in the build up to the 2019 general elections.

Edo LG IGR hits N210m

Posted: 24 Mar 2019 02:10 PM PDT

The Internally Generated Revenue of the 18 local government areas of Edo State has hit N210m monthly.

Before the coming of Governor Godwin Obaseki, the 18 local government area could barely raise N30m monthly.

State Commissioner for Local Government and Community Affairs, Hon Jimoh Ijegbai, who disclosed this in a chat with newsmen said the introduction of e-ticketing helped to boost revenue of the local councils.

Ijegbai said plans were on to block leakages in the council's revenue through the introduction of scratch cards.

He said the scratch cards were already being test run in Ikpoba-Okha, Egor and Oredo local government areas.

According to him, "If you look across the 18 local government areas. You will see massive infrastructural development. For the first time, Esan South East now have a transport line. They never had it before and their salaries are now regular.

"In December, Mr. Governor approved 50 percent of their savings for grading of rural roads. We have completed work on 20 primary health centres we used as pilot scheme. We want to use technology to drive our primary health. We now have Primary Health Care Development Agency. That will enable access whatever is due to Edo from the National level.

"Before Obaseki came in, the 18 local governments IGR was about N30m monthly but it is now oscillating between N190m to N210m. By the time we leverage on all other sources, it will improve more than. We will now be using scratch cards to block minor leakages we are seeing."

Igbo leaders pay solidarity visit to Ohanaeze PG

Posted: 24 Mar 2019 02:06 PM PDT

A delegation of Igbo leaders met with the President General of the pan Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief John Nnia Nwodo to congratulate him for his enlightened, focused and selfless leadership of Ndigbo in the trying period before and during the last elections.

The delegation which was led by Senator Ben Obi and included former governors Achike Udenwa and Okwesilieze Nwodo, Senator Azu Agboti, first Chairman Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, Chief Onyema Ugochukwu and former Ministers, Chief Dubem Onyia and Processor ABC Nwosu urged Nwodo not to relent in his pursuit of a restructured Nigeria.

The delegation thanked the Ohanaeze President General for standing firm on the priority Igbo position for the restructuring of Nigeria based on greater devolution of power and resources from the centre to the federating units and praised the President General for ignoring saboteurs of Igbo cause because he has been vindicated by the massive Igbo votes along the direction that Ohanaeze had endorsed.

The delegation pledged their personal unflinching support and loyalty for the President General and Ohanaeze Ndigbo to ensure that this task of restructuring Nigeria for the benefit of all citizens is accomplished.

The delegation said it was proud that the principled stand of Ndigbo on restructuring was galvanized by Ohanaeze Ndigbo under the very capable leadership of the President General and this resulted in the massive turnout of Ndigbo at the last general elections not only in the South East but throughout Nigeria, and vowed to assist the President General to ensure that Nigeria shall continue to feel the weight of Igbo votes until restructuring is accomplished, and those who continued to ignore Igbo votes in Nigeria do so at their risk.

The leaders pleaded with the Prescient General to ignore the activities by a few Ndigbo to sabotage the collective Igbo view since the Igbo votes strongly endorsed his position, but frowned seriously on the sell-out of Ohanaeze Ndigbo by the Secretary-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo and urged that he should be strongly sanctioned.

The Igbo leaders reiterated that the task of restructuring Nigeria into a nation that works for all its citizens and not just for only a section of its citizens, remains the top priority agenda of Ndigbo in Nigeria, and as the Igbo adage says, "the jaws do not rest until what is being chewed is finished," the President General must ensure that this burning desire of Ndigbo for the restructuring of Nigeria continues to remain in the front burner of Nigerian politics.

The task for Ndigbo now, according to the leaders, "is to design the post general election agenda to maintain Igbo solidarity such that the Igbo post election agenda is not distracted by those lobbying for positions in government and those positioning to be President in 2023.

The Igbo wisdom of struggling for where to sleep before fighting for the mat to sleep on should guide our post election strategy."

The delegation was exceedingly proud of Ndigbo for how they voted at the last elections "where ministers and prominent Igbo APC members found that the community is always bigger than the individual and it must be humbling for them to have lost at their polling booths."

The icing on the cake for Ndigbo was the election of Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha of Imo State which clearly showed that Ndigbo are resolved to start to redress the wrongs of the last few years from inside Igboland.

The leaders stressed:"It was clear that Ndigb are not afraid and will not be afraid in Nigeria whether in Owerri, Lagos, Kano, Abuja, Aba, Enugu, Warri or Asaba to express their full citizenship rights and their dissatisfaction with the way they are being treated politically in Nigeria. The post election thinking of every Onye Igbo must be Igbo renaissance in a Nigeria that works.

It is important that government must focus on restructuring and the task of nation building where all citizens of Nigeria are equal before the law and have equal opportunities to employment and other economic activities. Those who think that they can be senior and junior Nigerians must be told firmly that they are hallucinating."

YIAGA Africa seeks prosecution of electoral offenders

Posted: 24 Mar 2019 01:55 PM PDT

A civil society organisation, the Youth Initiative for Advocacy, Growth and Advancement (YIAGA Africa) on Sunday called for the prosecution of those who perpetrated violence during the supplementary election.

It said non-compliance with electoral guidelines, intimidation of voters and observers, violence and voter suppression in some states impeded on the integrity of the exercise.

In a statement by YIAGA Africa's Watching the Vote (WTV) Working Group Chair Dr. Hussaini Abdu and Executive Director Samson Itodo, the group said it deployed 264 observers to 311 polling units in the 98 Local Government Areas (LGA) where supplementary elections were held.

It also sent 95 observers to 95 LGA results collation centres in the five states namely Bauchi Benue, Kano, Plateau and Sokoto.

YIAGA Africa questioned the credibility of some results announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in polling units and LGA collation centres where observers and voters were allegedly chased away by thugs and police officers.

It said: "The level of impunity observed in the supplementary elections is an indication of democratic recession in Nigeria. Political thugs unleashed violence and terror on unarmed voters, INEC officials and citizens without any form of restraint or reprimand from security agencies deployed for the elections…

"Nigeria cannot continue to condone this brazen disregard for law and order by political actors.

"As a country determined to make progress, electoral impunity must be checkmated else it will imperil our 20 year old democracy."

Calling for the prosecution of offenders, the group said: "Several electoral offences were observed and reported by WTV observers and other domestic and international observer groups.

"We urge INEC and Nigerian police to properly investigate cases of infractions and ensure diligent prosecution of electoral offenders.

"INEC and the police should extend the investigation to reports of complicity and collusion of its staff to compromise to the process."

YIAGA Africa praised INEC for "improved management of election logistics and timely deployment for the elections".

"We urge INEC to make concerted efforts to vacate the substituting court order restraining it from concluding the elections in Adamawa and Bauchi states.

"YIAGA Africa calls on all stakeholders to reclaim our democracy by demanding accountability against all state and non-actors whose act undermined the electoral process," the group said.

9th NASS leadership: ‘Erring APC lawmakers will be punished’

Posted: 24 Mar 2019 01:49 PM PDT

A member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Jubrin Abdulmumin, at the weekend said that any erring member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) involved in foul play in the emergence of the leadership of the 9th National Assembly won't go unpunished.

In 2015, some members of the ruling party had connived with some opposition members in the emergence of the leadership of the 8th National Assembly to the detriment of the APC.

But speaking with State House correspondents after meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abdulmumin was optimistic that APC lawmakers will tow the line of the party for the emergence of the next leadership of the National Assembly.

He, however, harped on the need for lobbying prior to the process.

He said: "Well the position of our party and our leaders has always been that all elected members and of course, senators should exercise patience, work is going on, consultations are being carried out and I believe that no any elected senator or members of APC would allow himself to be used by the opposition like in the case of 2015.

"In the case of 2015, there weren't consequences but I am pretty sure that this time around, if anybody allowed himself to be used by the opposition party, there will certainly be consequences."

Asked if they will follow the wish of the party, he said: "Well, that is what is expected. But as you also aware, they are matured people, they are elected members, there is need for engagement, there is need for a lot of lobbying – that is what is obtainable all over the world.

"And we have in the person of the President- our father who is reaching out to everybody and of course the party chairman and other leaders working day and night consulting with members and lobbying where they should, so that at the end of the day we can have a very smooth leadership election.

"But of course, that is not to say that there is no elements of desperation as you can see, a lot of people coming out to indicate interest.

"Personally, I have complained about that and the way and manner they are going about it it's a bid unhealthy for the party, because at the end of the day only one person will become senate president and only one person will become the speaker and other principal officers.

"So we need to start imbibing the culture of putting the country first or the party first before ourselves.

"Personally, I have demonstrated that because I have indicated that I am not interested in running for the office of the speakership, deputy speakership or any principal office because of how chocked up the whole system is as regard the number of people that are contesting.

"Just to open up space, and allow some of us to sit down and organise and ensure that the government and of course the party eventually have the kind of parliament or the kind of leadership of the National Assembly that they can work with harmoniously." he said

Alleged N13b fraud: EFCC declares ex-NIA boss, wife wanted

Posted: 24 Mar 2019 01:39 PM PDT

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission ( EFCC ) has declared a former Director General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Amb. Ayodele Oke and his wife, Folasade, wanted in connection with alleged N13billion fraud.

The cash had to do with $43,449,947, £27,800 and N23,218,000 recovered by the EFCC from an apartment at Osborne Road, Ikoyi, Lagos, in April 2017.

But a family source said Oke, who has been away abroad got medical treatment, had not been served the charges against him.

He said Oke is not on the run but attending to his fragile health.

A statement by the Acting Head of Media and Publicity of the commission, Mr. Tony Orilade said the couple were declared wanted after they failed to answer fraud charges filed against them.

The statement said: "Justice Chukwujeku Aneke of a Federal High Court Lagos, had on February 7, 2019 issued an arrest warrant on them, consequent upon an oral application by counsel for the EFCC, Rotimi Oyedepo.

"Oke and his wife are wanted in connection with the $43,449,947, £27,800 and N23,218,000 cash recovered by the EFCC from an apartment at Osborne Road, Ikoyi, Lagos, in April 2017.

"They are facing a four-count charge bordering on money laundering offence to the tune of N13 billion.

"One of the counts reads: "That you, Amb. Ayodele Oke and Mrs. Folasade Ayodele Oke between 25th day of August 2015 and 2nd day of September 2015 in Lagos, with in the jurisdiction of this court directly converted $160,777,136.85 property of the Federal Government of Nigeria to your own use which sum you reasonably ought to have known formed part of proceeds of an unlawful act to wit: criminal breach of trust and you thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 15 (2) (d) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) (Amendment) Act 2012 and punishable under Section 15(3) of the same Act".

A top source, who spoke in confidence with our correspondent, said: "Twice, we have been to court but he refused to appear to answer the charges against him. We trailed him to NIA quarters but we avoided barging into the premises.

"But later the trail signal disappeared which indicated that he had gone underground.

"We explained our dilemma to the court and it gave us the go-ahead to look for him."

Responding to a question, the source added: "What we have done now is to watch-list him. Wherever he is, whoever sees him airport, seaport and land borders should report to any security agency.

" At this stage, what we need to do is to serve him charges."

A family source however said: "As at today, Oke and his wife have not been served any charges. They only arraigned him after he has gone abroad for treatment. Before he left the country, there was no communication from the anti-graft agency.

"How can the EFCC declare the ex-NIA boss wanted after he had appeared before them for questioning? Once he is through with his medical care, Oke and his wife will report to the EFCC accordingly."

APC vows to challenge Ortom’s victory at Tribunal

Posted: 24 Mar 2019 12:55 PM PDT

Samuel Ortom
The Jime – Ode campaign Organisation has vowed to challenge the declaration of Governor Samuel Ortom as re-elected by Independent National Election Commission (INEC).

Its Secretary Professor Eugene Aliegba, in a statement, alleged the supplementary election was fraught with irregularities such as votes buying, massive thump printing and intimidation of voters.

He said: "Moments ago, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), upon completion of the collation of results in the Benue supplementary elections, made a pronouncement on the outcome of the 2019 governorship election, declaring Mr Samuel Ortom of the PDP winner of the governorship contest in Benue State.

"We note that the announcement by INEC marks the end of another phase in this year's electoral cycle.

"When we embarked on this journey many months ago, it was to translate to reality the dreams of a better future to our long suffering people.

"Our message resonated with the electorate because they could tell our project was about service, not hinged on an intent to occupy office for the sake of it.

"And even as the results as declared don't appear to reflect the will of most of these same people, we call on our supporters to remain extremely calm and law abiding as they've been throughout the campaigns and electioneering period."

He added: "Going into this contest, we were well aware of the fact that only one of two outcomes were possible; either we won fairly in line with the massive support we earned from the people; or another winner emerged through a credible and transparent process.

''We did not anticipate a third option that confers advantage to those who played dubiously outside the laid down rules of the game.

"And because the results announced in favour of Governor Ortom and the PDP is a direct product of brutal violence, vote buying, ballot-stuffing, results-falsification, non use of the card reader and a range of other irregularities that have no place in our electoral laws, we are making it unequivocally clear that the Benue APC will explore all constitutional and legal options available to ensure the votes of the people count.

"In simple terms, we will make a case before the Election Petitions Tribunal to subject the Benue governorship elections result to an integrity test."

Umar Ganduje, the Kono State incumbent governor, has won the supplementary election held in the state on Saturday.

Words from the Director: @MarcAdebesin

'The Alter Date'' story is a story close to my heart and filled with great passion to have partner up with Yemisi Banjoko. I have a dream that one day Nollywood would be able to create global block buster's just like Hollywood, to be able to create movies that would be nominated and win Oscars, as I believe we have the talents that can do that in this generation. We are going somewhere great, mark my words today.

We are going to achieve excellence in big things but we must all develop the habit in little matters.
The path to greatness has never been easy and we should not expect an easy ride to the top.
We can either stretch each other's vision to its full potentials if we stand together or we could all stay divided and choke each other's dream. The part of us that does not increase us in unity will eventually decrease us. Always be prepared when opportunities come calling in life, put your best foot forward even, when it is awkward. We all thrive for success in life yet the great ones have their seeds of success buried in various failures, never let your age limit your vision.

'I can't kill myself for you guys. Google my name, the first thing you will see is the most bitter Nigerian woman

Former associate Bunmi Fagbuyiro says 'Working with Tonto Dikeh for 6 years was hell'

Posted: 24 Mar 2019 08:02 AM PDT

Tonto Dikeh and Former associate Bunmi Fagbuyiro
A former associate of actress Tonto Dikeh, Bunmi Fagbuyiro has revealed that his time with her could be likened to a journey to the Hades.

Earlier this week, Fagbuyiro had made an allegation against the actress over threats to his life and that of his family and cried out on social media, saying if anything happens to them, Tonto Dikeh should be held responsible.

When The Punch got in touch with him, he explained that he used to work with Dikeh but had to resign when he couldn't tolerate her (excesses) any longer.

He stated,

"We used to work together but she is not exactly a good woman. I tried to tolerate her but it got to a point when I felt I deserved some respect and left the foundation. When I told her I was leaving, she became bitter towards me and called me many unprintable names.

But I didn't mind as long as I didn't steal from her. She is the type of person who doesn't like to pay salaries; she doesn't want to be responsible for anything."

Fagbuyiro also revealed that the actress got him arrested for no reason:

"A week after she sent me the message, she came with some SARS officers to arrest me. They were supposed to beat me but they were gentle with me after I told them what transpired between us. She collected all her things from me and told the SARS officers that she would pay me the next day. Meanwhile, she didn't pay until four months later.

"I have known her for 10 years but we worked together fully for six years. It was hell working with her. Everyone who had worked with her didn't leave on good terms, but I thought I could coexist with her. I took my time to study her and I observed her temperament. I even tried to help her psychologically."

Eku Edewor: 'I’m co-parenting happily'

Posted: 24 Mar 2019 07:56 AM PDT

Nigerian media personality, Eku Edewor who talked about her life's journey in an interview with Punch, disclosed that she is not married but co-parenting happily.

The media personality who also talked about venturing into acting, disclosed that the first amount she was paid for acting was about N80,000 per month. Eku Edewor who disclosed that she is not married but co-parenting happily, added that she has not been subjected to sexual harassment in the industry.

Acting
I have been acting since I was very young but I took it professionally when I was 10 years old. I started my career as a TV presenter. So many people aren't aware that my first training was as an actor. While growing up, my dad used to watch and record a lot of movies; I think he might have stirred the interest in me because he loves films. The first amount I was paid for acting was about N80,000 per month.

Sexual harassment
I think that I don't look very approachable because I have never experienced sexual harassment. I feel people think that if they even suggest such a thing, I might slap them. I don't think I look like the type of person that would accept that. And no one has ever come to me to complain about such things; perhaps because I keep to myself and don't really socialise. The closest experience I ever had was when someone called me to say that a man with a lot of money wanted to meet me. Even that wasn't aggressive because it was just someone calling me to test the waters. And I told her that I wasn't interested in that.

Motherhood
Motherhood has taught me that my parents tried raising me. It gave me a greater sense of myself and made me more assured. When you are in an industry where you are self-employed, you can lose faith in yourself if you don't get a job or the opportunity you want. When I had my daughter, it really made me feel stronger because I needed to show her how to be strong and fight for her dreams.

Relationship
I am not married but I'm co-parenting happily.
